For some, the humor sticks, for others, it's distracting. It's hard to argue for or against either side, but as a film, it does stand out thanks to the timely theme (human beings are too distracted by nothing to care about something) and the lead performances of Dicaprio and Meryl Streep (both top-notch). The brisk pacing via the "Adam McKay" (and Baumbauch) jump cuts also help move the action along, minimizing the awkwardness of the delicate balance between the humor and the thematic weightiness. It may seem go overboard at times (particularly in the third act), and does sometimes have a difficult time balancing the two polarities (comedy - deadly serious social problem), but it is thoroughly entertaining and a solid achievement nonetheless. Consider it a unique and disturbingly prescient comedy that needed to be made, despite its flaws. Expand

The aggressively mediocre satire that loses itself in a tediously wrapped 2 hour salad. With nothing exciting or bold to offer in the monotony of the premise.

Written and directed by Adam McKay who is no stranger to such movies with his previous outings such as The Big Short, a film about the 2008 housing crisis and economic crash, and VICE, a film about Dick Cheney's tenure, with both having a strong layer of satire embedded in the narrative and so I was excited to check this out. Another hit from the man.

My enjoyment of this movie boils down to two main reasons:

1) Growing up, I was a huge fan of Disaster or end-of-the-world scenario movies regardless of what is bringing that end and two of my favourites from that time were Armageddon and Deep Impact, both dealing with a large Asteroid impact, so I was naturally giddy with excitement when a modern movie with a similar scenario came out and dealt with that subject matter in a satirical tone. A fresh experience of something I love.

2) The social commentary on the state of the modern world and several avenues in it as what would the world do if Humanity is faced with this extinction event whether it is politics, mainstream media, social media, big tech companies, science, the youth, family etc, and giving jabs to both sides of the political spectrum. Some of it is heavy-handed and too on the nose going to absurdism while some of it is subtle and that created a fun balance. It also can be horrifying as to how close to home it hits with all the nonsense that is happening nowadays.

Of course, the movie wouldn't have been great without having a large and talented cast, all of whom gave good-great performances, enhancing your attachment or disdain for the characters according to the plot. My favourite was without a doubt, Leonardo DiCaprio. The dude's amazing in everything I've watched and this was no exception. Seeing him in a scientist role struggling to deal with the sheer stupidity at hand from the Govt. and the media made me frustrated as well, alongside the co-star Jennifer Lawrence, who was also great. I like that while it is a comedy, it walks the line between serious and absurd rather well. If it was all goofy and funny, it wouldn't have had the impact it wanted to have.

Well directed, written and shot with erratic editing that works for a movie like this as it keeps the momentum going. Without giving anything away, I do, however, wish that we got to see a bit more towards the end. Also, I did miss Adam McKay's style of 4th wall breaks or the fake obvious wrap-ups but considering it is a fictional tale and not based on a historical event or personality, maybe it wouldn't have worked here.

Overall, I enjoyed it a lot, this was right up my alley. It is definitely amongst the best of 2021 for me. If you like satire or if the premise interests you, I'd recommend giving this a watch. And if I were to rate it, I'd give it a solid 8/10.

Before I start, wow the review bombs on this are crazy.... What has happened to criticism :/

Ok, so most reviews would have you believe this film is either a cult classic or the worst dribble ever produced by Holly Wood EVER. Putting political leanings aside for a second, this movie is objectively nothing revolutionary but also far the pure dribble most would have you believe. The plot begins with Leo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence playing a pair of astronomical researchers who make a discovery. A massive comet is going to hit the Earth. If this sounds a lot like the plot of Armageddon that because it start off like that, however the story quickly unfolds into a tangled mess of political drama and combat as the pair struggle to get raise awareness of the Earths impending doom. Being a dark comedy with heavy political implication this film has no issue taking pot shot at both sides of the isle while presenting it dooms day scenario as both a possibility and the butt of many of this films jokes. This is in some cases its strength but also its greatest weakness. While the premise would do well in a short dooms day flick the with multiple plot lines the struggles of theses scientists quickly begins to wear you down as you realize that problems which were previously believed to be solved come back into the fold simply because film hasn't reached it full run time just yet. This is kind of the crux of this film, it gives itself way too much breathing room and expects it audience hang on as it continues hammer in its message through, not so vaguely stated, political allegories. While there is nothing wrong with the allegories themselves, the length of the movie left me wondering if the same impact could have been achieved with an hour thirty or even two hour film as opposed to the two and a half hour trudge we got. All in all I found this film to have a lot of very funny critiques on things such as media, fame, nepotism, political corruption and pseudo science which are interesting the first few times they appears but begin to wear on you at around the two hour mark. Definitely worth a watch if you've nothing else on your Netflix queue.

It alsoDon't Look Up is a hilarious yet bleak satirical comedy that certainly is not lacking in things to say. The film highlights important and currently relevant themes such as social media, "political activism", and corrupt leadership. It also features great performances, primarily those of DiCaprio and Lawrence. It seemed that the immense stakes of the story took a bit away from the lead characters and left them feeling a bit underwritten, but much of this was made up for by the terrific lead acting. They made emotional moments that shouldn't have worked some of the best parts of the movie. I also found that most of the comedy really hit for me with Jonah Hill in particular being a highlight in this respect. My one other flaw was that the film had a few side plots that seemed a bit extraneous, but many of these wound up having at least some pay off. In summary, Don't Look Up is hilarious and extremely topical in today's world. I would absolutely recommend giving it a watch. Expand

It shines a light on the role of government, companies (including media), and their relation to society. It also conveys an important message directed towards people who believe in recent conspiratorial theories. For someone already inside the bubble, the film story might be as obvious as it might be dull. There is a confounded tension between each half (lengthwise) of the movie: the first one has a more cringe comedy touch, while the second gets a more down-to-earth tone. Its first act is a terrible introduction to the story, as the dialogues instead of being cringe-worthy are just far-fetched. The cast performed honorably, but the screenplay is just not too appealing. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Most reviews say "its not a comedy" "its a bad comedy" or "the jokes are kinda weird in a apocaliptic movie" and... thats the point, is only a comedy for people who already know everything that happens in the real world, how this is... way too close, and decide to deal with it by joking while trying to do something about it cause we are too weak to deal with it directly. I love how all characters are at least bydimensionals, having literally all deniers that moment of "hey, i believe in my politics, but im being treated as a fool"(which they are)"So **** this guys" is good, really cool, how it doesnt go the really easy way of "those are all dumb people and we the bad guys" it does say something new? Probably not, no idea, im not a critic, but it says the right things the right way and talks about something that most mainstream movies (probably there are a lot that dont, but again, idk) just ignore and say "If humanity is in danger everyone will sudently agree, usa will be the best nation, help everyone and solve the problems while the rest just sit down and all america agrees cause saving the planet is easy." Also it does kinda help to avoid the actual problem? Maybe, dont think so, but maybe someone will ignore the actual problems in the actual world, i feel most people will do the oposite and is cool to see this movies, even if they are the 232343 movie of saying the same thing (which i dont think they are, but again again, idk) Also i really liked it so im putting it even high than i think others with my same points would put it is not a ten because idk if im just very hyped. I thoroughly enjoyed this. I can understand why critics disliked it: they wouldn't know satire if it bit them on the arse, or was delivered by a mobile app and bit them on the arse.

I found it very well done, well-delivered, and exactly on point as a depiction of a modern society whose only concern is public opinion of themselves.

I definitely recommend it to British audiences as we tend to get the subtlety of the humour.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Adam McKay's "Don't Look Up" is abosultely one of the greatest movies I have ever seen. Almost every detail of the movie was either being metaphorical or being satirical, in both subtle and obvious ways. I recommend, when you watch this, to not watch it as just a movie, watch and as your watching try comparing what's happening to a real like event and/or person and it's very eye opening.

I will say, this is purely a movie for this current batch of humans alive now, it won't have the same feel to those without a first hand account of the state of the world.

You have to go into this movie with a very unbiased political mindset or you won't see the beauty of it. Every generation and political party are represented both positively and negatively. It really does make you realize how truly corrupt ALL sides are. There are no fake claims against anyone, or things over embellished, it really shows how we truly are.

Abosuletly incredible and well worth the watch.

But what lies on the surface is not what we are delighted with. Not once during its 2 hour-ish runtime did I feel taken-aback by an actors predictable nature, quite the opposite. Every performance is outstanding and well casted - even popular artists such as Ariana Grande and Kid Cudi arrive with some truly hilarious moments and quips, well acted.

What performances make up for is the often mixed tone - a comedic approach to an existential disaster film. While the first half struggles to keep a grip on its ideals, the second comes in swooping and delivers some of the best metaphors, jokes, and social commentary in movies yet - even if it tends to be extreme to the point of annoyance. With its sporadic editing, and amazing performances, Don't Look Up ends up being one of the best movies of this past year, delivering an experience with more meaning wrapped behind its obvious social commentary and well-written comedy - one of the few films that can singlehandedly create a loss of hope and a rebuilding at once.

When they report this to "Oglethorpe" (Rob Morgan) - the NASA man tasked with dealing with such existential threats, the three are now exposed to the upper echelons of the United States administration, which often draws a smile and a grimace from the audience. The real star of the movie, Meryl Streep, is "President Orlean" (yes, guess what her given name is?), who presides over her government with the help of her hapless son of Chief of Staff "Jason" (Jonah Hill) in which it is a very thinly veiled blow to all things Trumpian. The story largely follows the thread of "Meteor" (1979), only with better special effects, and the corporate machinations of the "Blofeld"-esque "Isherwell" (Sir Mark Rylance) add a bit of false threat to that. fun disaster movie parody meets political drama through some manipulative and fickle television journalism (summarized by an amusing contribution from Cate Blanchett). The film's pacing is a bit unpredictable, but keep an eye out for some good scenes from Ron Perlman as the archetypal, militaristic enthusiast "Drask" and Timothée Chalamet (where does he find the time?) as the hippie love interest "Yule", which adds some volume and humor to the rather flimsy plot that has a really fitting ending. On top of Netflix productions, this - for a change, decent writing accompanies an on-form cast and I liked it. Expand

All of whom I respect as incredibly talented actors. Dicaprio is the main star alongside Lawrence, and they form a good pair, with him playing the quieter individual while Lawrence is more out there and loud and is the butt of jokes throughout the movie. Seeing Jonah Hill in a comedy role again reminds me of his role in “Superbad.” He has excellent comedic timing and pulls off the douchey underling very well. I can see how some people would feel it has too much comedy with too much seriousness when it should have decided which one to focus on and used the other as an accessory. Sometimes when trying to be serious it at once follows it up with a gag or vice versa. While depicting the way some people feel the government has handled the Covid-19 outbreak as well as the issue of global warming, the constant flip-flopping can come across as jarring. Near the end of the film, it does take a more serious tone and starts to use layback on the jokes. The ending is not what you expect from a movie like this, but it makes sense in the context and delivers the message they wanted the movie to go with about what happens when you try to sweep issues under the proverbial rug. After viewing it, I understand why it has been given a mediocre score, but it is being panned too hard. The actors played their parts well, none of them came off as disinterested in the project. It goes into some touchy subjects, such as politics and the like. But it is satire, and those things are to be expected. I would suggest that people see it because at its core it is a good comedy. And it may even open some doors to viewing new opinions and could cause someone to Look Up. Expand

They are mocking and critiquing a movie that is showing our possible last moments of survival, and how we are willingly going there. Expand

There was nothing funny about this movie. The "satire" in this movie is so heavy handed and uninformed. Non of the characters are likable and the film misses almost every point on what its commenting on. Awful awful film.

I wish I haven't watched this garbage that they have the audacity to call a movie - literally a waste of time. At the beginning it was ok but then it went from 100 to 0 real quick.

Jennifer Lawrence was great, the dialogue is very well written, wasn't crazy about the ending, but overall, really liked this movie. But I don't think it needed to be nominated for best picture.

This film is not for everyone, people who do not understand sarcasm and black humor will not understand the deeper message of the film.

Great Movie! Unfortunately, too realistic for satire, which is already creepy.
