This is trash, it is mainly popular due to all the celebrities. It drags on for hours and it isn’t really funny at all. Whoever said this is the funniest film of 2021 is the same person who thinks all SNL skits are hilarious.

All right-thinking people will agree with Don't Look Up's mockery of the vapid stupidity of American culture and Americans today, but the movie mostly wastes some of the best actors Hollywood has on its own artistic ineptitude. I'm not and I stopped watching about half of the way in. There were some things that I liked about it: Jennifer Lawrence's bangs were awesome. The writing however was too broad and loud and the direction (the director co-wrote) was too broad, also. And didn't make sense. We have a character played by Lawrence who stays pretty cool and calm and out of nowhere loses it on national television. Then a few scenes later, the nervous character played by Leonardo di Caprio, who has learned to stay calm and confident on camera loses it during an interview on national television essentially in exactly the same way. I believe that the climate situation is urgent and requires world wide action. This self-indulgent film will win awards, I'm sure, as Hollywood loves to reward itself for its social commentary. But it wasn't a good movie. Expand

Folks suggested that now, in the midst of this pandemic, is not the time to be adding to the general dismay, depression, and physical and emotional trauma of people. I disagreed, saying that now is *precisely* the time to remind people of the looming environmental catastrophe, because in the current situation, it' s all too easy to forget about it and focus only on the immediate problems. Well, this movie does exactly what I'm suggesting. Yes, it could have been a better film in the hands of another director, but McKay did it in his own usual style, winking all the way, and perhaps lesseing it's potential impact, but the point is, nevertheless, made. So watch this, and take it's overly-telegraphed message to heart. Expand

Great cast
Cool CGI
Smart

Cons: Preaches to the choir
Not an equal opportunity offender May hit too close to home for some
Clever, and anxiety-inducing — but not necessarily funny, save for Jonah Hill

Verdict: Finds plenty to satirize in our culture, punching up and down, but picks political sides in the battle for our minds - could’ve gone further (and more punk) to make a more surprising and balanced jab in the ribs

But when you consider everything else that makes up a film (plausibility of the facts that make up the plot and how the network of such facts reflects the real world; behavior of characters; staging of actors; etc.), it's a pretty good movie.
The true disaster is the review of the professional critics, which uses just one factor to determine the entire quality of the film. Since the biggest problem with the film was that it was obvious and not an implied message, it seems to me that critics demand a sense of elitism.
Again noting that subtlety is important, but the weight that critics have given to basically this single factor is clearly disproportionate.
A solid 7 - 7.5 describes the film well.

"Don't Look Up" delivers in it's star studded cast and fair amount of quirky, dark, and sometimes hilariously offensive caricatures of how our modern dystopia handles a world threatening comet. Leonardo Dicaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Cate Blanchett, and an ever witty Meryl Streep deliver the talent and most of the laughs when they do come, which is thankfully more often than not. That's in thanks primarily to Adam McKay's punchy dialogue and solid work in the editing room. It's a shame the film gets bogged down by a few too many dumb jokes, genre tropes, and a disastrous, and cringe inducing performances by Jonah Hill and Ariana Grande. That and the film could have definitely been streamlined and simplified by cutting a solid twenty minutes from it's lengthy 2hr and 18min runtime. Still, "Don't Look Up" achieves what it set out to accomplish. Some will laugh. Some will cringe. Some will be nonplussed. Expand

The acting is great, with one or two exceptions maybe, the effects are good. It may target low hanging fruit at times (a nepotistic and moronic president and her son who has the hots for her... - sounds somewhat familiar?, Peter Isherwell being an amalgamation of Tim Cook and Elon Musk.., Bash - Apple...) but it does a decent job at showing how passive and aloof people are in regards to current issues. It lacks sublety but that's what also made it entertaining in it's own way. Highly recommended but I can see why certain people would be triggered by it. Expand

It actually, properly articulates and illustrates the terribly unfortunate idiosyncrasies of our society - from the Politics to Ariana Grande. It's likely very fair to think that: "if Covid-19 was a massive comet hurtling towards the earth, this is what could happen". But - It is also hilarious, sad, chilling, and deeply troubling to watch. Probably one of the saddest and scariest movies of the year.

The movie boasts an incredible heavy weight ensemble cast and absolutely no one disappoints. Special mention goes to the amazing chemistry between many of the characters as they work fantastically well with each other: Blanchett-DiCaprio, Perry-Blanchett, Lawrence-Hill and cheers to Timothee Chalamet for stealing that scene at the end.

Admittedly, the movie sometimes try to be overly-styled (or especially artsy) which is totally unnecessary - but that doesn't detract from the overall movie itself.

Don't Look Up is a beauty. I was not expecting it to be profound but it was and I definitely do not regret watching it - I recommend it highly, it is a must watch.

McKay was clearly on a Wes Anderson marathon before directing this schlock. Don’t Look Up has all the makings of a Wes Anderson film: intermittent visual cuts, over-the-top main characters, and comically mocking a serious topic while responsibly handling the topic’s severity. McKay takes all of these hallmarks and miraculously fumbles all of them by making the intermittent cuts as bizarre and irrelevant as possible, making everyone except the main characters unnaturally over-the-top, and having no respect for the topics parodied to the point that one can safely say Don’t Look Up was designed for the express purpose of exploiting American angst to make a quick buck. All of this incompetent bumbling works in heinous disharmony to create one of the most tone-deaf, out-of-touch and blunt student film projects ever shown to the public eye.

Don’t Look Up’s most glaring issue is how extremely the tone changes mid-scene. There are sharp turns from depressed to snarky, shattered hope to joking about a character being cheap, and instantaneous political flip-flopping. The worst part is that all of these instances mentioned are not the parody characters, these are the main characters experiencing these emotionally unintelligent and abrupt changes in mood and behavior. The parody characters are subject to so many moments like these that I don’t have enough space to list them all here, so I’ll just mention the outlandish Trump parody and her genuinely Jafar from Aladdin level of vile son, the racist military veteran, and the 30-years too old Elon Musk parody.

The doomsday scenario of Don’t Look Up is clearly intended to mock the response to the COVID-19 pandemic. First off, there has not been enough time between the pandemic and now for even a good parody director to mock the event or the people involved, especially with the emergence of the Omicron variant and how the first wave of shutdowns is still hurting many people. Don’t Look Up feeds on the anger and dread of those impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic by dangling the idea that the pandemic could have been handled better in people’s faces. One would think that Adam McKay did this intentionally to antagonize a still divided USA, and one would likely be right with how many other social issues are mocked.

A particularly poorly handled pair of elements of society that Don’t Look Up mocks are Big Tech and social media and it handles both with all the tact and understanding one should expect from a cast and crew dominated by people above and beyond the age of 40. The simple message, as direct as the movie itself gives you, is “big technology is bad and you should feel bad for supporting it and social media is a cancer on society that is making everyone stupid.” While I personally agree with most of the latter sentiment, actually having the experience required to believe such, this message has been beat to death by every filmmaker since the late 2000s to resonate with other technology-fearing middle-aged people.

Speaking of middle-aged, Casting Director Francine Maisler has brought has-beens from the 00s to be paid to phone in nearly every line. I feel horrible for Leonardo DiCaprio because he at least seemed to try to act to the best of his ability, but nobody else came close to delivering a pizza let alone a performance. Jennifer Lawerence seemed genuinely confused with how her character was supposed to emote at most moments and Jonah Hill honestly could not fail acting in-character given how the character was clearly tailored with the intent that Jonah Hill would be playing him.

Overall, don’t watch Don’t Look Up if you have any taste. Even as a bad movie it’s not a watchable bad movie like The Room or Twisted Pair, it’s just an ignorant and emotionally stunted cash grab that is only hot because it was designed to be as contemporary as possible. I know I was hard on Adam McKay, but he has a long list of significantly better movies than this atrocity against filmmaking. Pick any other Adam McKay film and you’ll likely enjoy it, but as it stands only Adam McKay fanatics and politically-excited nut jobs can possibly enjoy something like this.

In the olden days, terrible movies bombed at the box office because moviegoers don't want to waste their money. But with Netflix, you're paying for everything with a flat fee, so there is no way for the marketplace to hold them to account. You're not going to cancel Netflix over a single movie, and they don't release objective viewership data, so now, everything is wonderful. It's a great deal for the actors, Netflix props up its share price, and our culture suffers death by mediocrity. Because this movie is self-indulgent dreck. Expand

ThenTwo astronomers (Jennifer Lawrence & Leonardo DiCaprio) discover a comet headed toward Earth that will annihilate civilization. When they try to alert the President (Meryl Streep), she tosses it off for more pressing political matters. Then they go to the media (Cate Blanchett and Tyler Perry), who are too self-absorbed and surface to care. As the scientists try to alert the world and stop the calamity, the country spirals out of control, while the politicians look the other way (down). Social media only exacerbates matters. Yes, this conflict sounds familiar in today’s political climate and writer/director Adam McKay has masterfully made it entertaining. Like his last satire, The Big Short (my review) he uses all-out-performances, snappy editing, short scenes and clever comedy to sell his dismal message. The entire cast is great, but Mark Rylance was especially hilarious as the ultra-nerdy tech genius. Surprisingly, at 2:25 the movie flies by, which is a testament to McKay’s smart savvy skills. NOTE: Stay thru the credits for one final gag. Expand

I didnt know what to think about this movie at first.
Then I read the claims of the director that this movie was meant to criticize republicans about climate change.
But:
Why do republicans love Bill Clinton in this movie then?
Why is a Bill Gates/Fauci hybrid and Hillary Clinton being portrayed as republican then?
Why is the MSM being shown as republican outlets?

The only explanation is that the makers of this movie suffer from extreme projection and reality shined through a bit here and there.
They dont realize that everything they claim about the other side is what they do and are themselves.
Still, this fact makes this movie pretty hilarious. See it as an "Idiocracy" in the present and real life. Its a case study of the state of media, politization of science and corruption going on in the real world. Just not colored the way the director thought it would be. He thinks too black and white and far too much from his own very biased standpoint. Hes a mainstream director after all, getting his money from the establishment, which of course he needs to please to be able to keep making movies in this age and day of cancel culture.
I think he does know exactly what he did and so just used the distorted view of reality in this movie as full blown propaganda against his political opponents.

The movie is for sure so bad that its good again. Thats why finding a proper score was pretty hard to do. I mean it entertained me. Thats why I was going to give it a 5 or 6. But in the end I see reality and what was intended with this movie, which I cant tolerate in good conscience.

In this day and age, a large population of the world does not believe what they see, and abhor science, logic and rational thinking. Instead, a thin privileged slice of humanity is immune to empathy for those less fortunate and insists on a steady diet of sweet coated lies. It seems a large chunk of us simply lack the digestive system to absorb difficult truths. But then again mass rejection of facts runs rampant all over the world. Dicaprio and Lawrence give outstanding performances as sincere and dedicated scientists, absolutely dumbstruck by the apathy and arrogance of figures in authority. The rest of the heavy-hitting cast delivers strong performances too, especially Hill, Streep and Blanchet, as is expected. This movie is a wake-up call for society. Whether it is a planet threatening virus or comet, all of us need to get back to rational thinking, logical analysis and open-mindedness. Not everything is a conspiracy, use your common sense, hopefully, some is remaining. Expand

A film like this presents that opportunity but this film does it in the most out of touch and bland way possible. I found a majority of this film to be insufferable with Leonardo DiCaprio’s being the only thing keeping me going. He’s the only thing I really loved about this movie. His performance is great and the rest of the actors here do a good job as well with Jonah Hill and Jennifer Lawrence being great as well. Ariana Grande though felt so forced. Her performance wasn’t very good and it feels like they just shoved her in to say “Look guys it’s a singer that you know”. The scene where Leo screams about climate change is the best part of the movie and the film does very slightly improve from there but not enough to redeem it. The writing and jokes are pretty awful here. Every line has to end in some sort of the joke and the film never once got a laugh from me not even in a so bad it’s good way. It just goes on and on and on until the end of the film. The films presentation is so bland here. The camera is constantly shaking and moving around but there really aren’t any cool shots to look at. The visual effects for space look good and that was the only time I really thought the visuals looked nice. The editing here is some of the worst I have seen in a movie. It jumps all over the place and makes no sense at all. It’s all rapid fear and it becomes nauseating after the first half hour. I do wish the subject of climate change here was handled a lot better. It feels so in your face about it and I wish the film had presented it more subtlety. For me, messages in movies that stick the hardest are the ones that aren’t always obvious. They make me think but this didn’t make me think. It shoved the issue in my face and while I agree with it, it should have been handled more delicately. I don’t think I could honestly recommend this to someone. Pass on it and watch something else. Expand

It would be a mistake to assume the purpose of Don’t Look Up is to further divide people along political lines. The film avoids using divisive labels and instead takes aim the entire corrupt system. Adam McCay holds nothing back in his satirical yet scathing critique of the reality we are living in. From the mainstream media to the political establishment, nobody is safe from the real-world criticisms this film is trying to convey and I loved every minute of it. No other film has so explicitly demonstrated the absurd ways that capital interests are able to control the levers of power in our society to serve their own interests at the detriment of everyone else. The cast were incredible and had me cracking up from start to finish. My only criticism was with the last minute of the film that took a jarring turn from non-fictional territory to total sci-fi. I think the movie would have been better off without that final scene. But I think it’s important to note that despite the film’s futile narrative and the ways it illustrates mankind’s inability to get out of its own way, Don’t Look Up still left me feeling like there is hope for us. After all, comedy is the medicine we take to cope with reality. Expand

Too accurate to be funny and too over the top to make any kind emotional impact.

Adam Mckay's over the top style works great for the antiquated blockbuster comedy and has been a cornerstone of some of my favorite movies like Anchorman & Stepbrothers. That being said, that over the top style just beats you down in a movie of this length and scale. You get the point of the movie within the first 20 minutes and you spend the subsequent 2 hours wondering if there will be anything insightful to be gleaned but eventually you realize that this movie is just holds up a mirror to society and has nothing more to offer.

There are a few funny lines here and there and the acting is as good as it could have been.

People who half way pay attention to what's going on in the world will feel secondhand smartness from this films conclusions and the actors will be able to go to sleep with a nice fat Netflix paycheck and a smug little smile on their faces.

All in all this movie is cynical self-serving garbage.

This bitingly cynical yet consistently hilarious dark comedy about the responses of various corners of officialdom to the impending impact of a planet-killing comet poignantly illustrates the wrong-headed priority that contemporary authorities place on self-serving expediency rather than genuine leadership in the face of certain doom. As a metaphor for the current state of American culture, the film is undeniably more than a little over the top, but, given the nature of the message, it also couldn't have been anything less in order to make its point, especially to a society that has become increasingly ignorant and complacent to pay attention to what's really going on around it. The stellar cast is superb across the board, playing their parts near perfectly for each and every character. But what's most impressive is how genuinely funny this offering is throughout, never succumbing to lulls, pacing issues or jokes that fail to land, something few comedies can successfully pull off these days. Indeed, in a year that has been characterized by a wealth of lame releases that have been undeservedly touted for their alleged brilliance, it's truly refreshing to see one that finally lives up to such qualities -- even if many of those writing about it can't see that for themselves, about which all I can say is, "I rest my case." Leonardo Dicaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Jonah Hill and yes, even Meryl Streep, this couldn't be anything other than a straight 10/10, right? 20 Minutes in, and I kept wondering, "how is it possible to have such a great cast, but make such a terrible movie?" The "comedy" seems to have been written by people who only studied the concept of "comedy" but were never exposed to comedy themselves. Political messaging was on the nose (which I really don't mind) but this was basically carrying the message: "Believe what I think or you are not even a human being." I lost my respect to every single actor in the cast, because it is clear that the only reason they signed up for this was because of the paycheck. This movie just shows that everyone can be bought if the price is right. I love disaster spoof movies but this truly is the worst movie I've ever watched in my life. Expand

The most unfunny dull stupid movie I have seen in years. Nettflix confirm again their reputation as the worst filmakers in the industry.

Adam McKay has been in a downhill since 'The Big Short.' Everything in 'Don't Look Up' is cringey and annoying. And the worst part is that it thinks is clever, like if it's presenting global warming denial for the very first time. I thinkAdam McKay has been in a downhill since 'The Big Short.' Everything in 'Don't Look Up' is cringey and annoying. And the worst part is that it thinks is clever, like if it's presenting global warming denial for the very first time. I think this film is an insult to the very cause of saving our planet. And while satire is its device, the movie becomes what it vehemently criticizes. Expand

Absolutely stunning how bad they can make a movie with no heart. This movie reflects society as a dimbwitted knuckledragging morons that just do stupid trends and shares them. I expected this to suck and it did, bad.

Why is every single character in this movie a walking stereotype? Why does DiCabrio look like Dunkey if Dunkey came with a couple extra chromosomes, that's sniffing marijuana while watching podcasts?

This film assumes its audience are complete morons and beats you over the head with a message that is as moronic as it is poorly told. Easily one of the worst satires I've ever seen, and McKay should be ashamed to put his name on this.

'Don't Look Up' is an unfunny establishment attempt at satire starring plenty of pretentious cosmopolitan establishment Hollywood celebs being directed by Bernie bro Adam McKay (whose wife is of the same tribe as Bernie). It seems in the midst of Covid and the California wildfires, Adam McKay fell asleep watching Dr. Strangelove and Armageddon, woke up and went, "Heyyyy....". Guess which approachIt seems in the midst of Covid and the California wildfires, Adam McKay fell asleep watching Dr. Strangelove and Armageddon, woke up and went, "Heyyyy....". Satire can be subtle or it can be wielded like a sledgehammer. Guess which approach Don't Look Up takes. That's not too say his targets aren't worthy and timely. It's just so obvious. Like shooting fish in a barrel. Science versus politics. Happy News personalities. Bezos/Musk type billionaires. Nepotism in the White House. Blam blam blam. It's the end of the world as we know it and...I chuckled from time to time. Expand
