It's an allegory worthy of our times and smart. Jennifer Lawrence is thoroughly engaging and focuses the story in a way only a substantial, grounded, and intelligent actor can. Streep, of course, was entertaining and disturbingly above-it-all. Mark Rylance played it on the mark, so did Jonah Hill, Tyler Perry (omg), Rob Morgan. Some were over the edge into camp and plastic doll territory, but it didn't disturb the greatness of this movie. Expand

That is why this stings so well, and is quite believable despite the satire. Leftists will love it, but I would imagine conservatives would be somewhere between indifferent...to outright animosity. (As the film is very critical of conservatives, but especially of the media and politicans.) As a film its a bit long, and can feel a bit repetitive during one montage about halfway in, but once it hits its stride to continues on to the climax quite well. Consistently funny bits throughout, and likely a satire classic, one of the best I have ever seen. Anyone who is not A. rich or B.a conservative will likely enjoy it, and its worth watching no matter what ones political affiliation. Its a very interesting story, with an amazing cast, a good amount of humor, and hits at real drama as well as it goes along. Pretty much: this film shows better than any film, what it feels like to be a Bernie Sanders supporters, or a climate activist in our wayward political times. So even conservatives..if they want to understand what that feels like, should watch this film, and can likely learn something. I would consider it a must watch in these present times, and a satire classic. Expand

But no, as it went on, I began warming up to this very odd, dark, satire. It borrows a premise from some blockbuster adventure flick - at least I bet this has been done before - a big comet is on a collision course with earth, and what is to be done? A couple of well-intentioned scientists set out to inform their leaders and the public of the bad news. But surprise - this is where the flick takes a sharp turn - our leaders don't want to hear about it, and urge caution, etc. The scientists (DiCaprio and Lawrence) soon find themselves embroiled in controversies and romantic entanglements. Mark Rylance is a hoot as a Musk/Jobs-like engineering genius who comes up with a way to profit from the comet. Cate Blanchett is fantastic as a heartless talk show hostess. It is co-written by leftist journalist David Sirota. This is full of loony, funny moments - and it could irritate a lot of people. Expand

I appreciated Don’t Look Up. Thankfully, I give very little weight to what movie critics have to say about any movie.

Don’t Look Up is supposed to be a work of satire but it felt more like a documentary. Of course, it was preceded by Idiocracy and others in the theme it tackles. It doesn’t present anything new, and I don’t think it’s trying to.

What it does is affirm the fear many people have that humanity is likely doomed if a large scale collective tragedy strikes us; at least in America. The Coronavirus pandemic has proven that so many people are incapable of prioritizing collectivism over self-centered individualism. A larger tragedy could reveal even more uglier truths about ourselves. Ultimately, I choose to believe that human wisdom and goodness will prevail, but that belief has never been challenged more than it has over the past several years.

Don’t Look Up is a tribute to that feeling of despair.

It would be a mistake to assume the purpose of Don’t Look Up is to further divide people along political lines. The film avoids using divisive labels and instead takes aim the entire corrupt system. Adam McCay holds nothing back in his satirical yet scathing critique of the reality we are living in. From the mainstream media to the political establishment, nobody is safe from the real-world criticisms this film is trying to convey and I loved every minute of it. No other film has so explicitly demonstrated the absurd ways that capital interests are able to control the levers of power in our society to serve their own interests at the detriment of everyone else. The cast were incredible and had me cracking up from start to finish. My only criticism was with the last minute of the film that took a jarring turn from non-fictional territory to total sci-fi. I think the movie would have been better off without that final scene. But I think it’s important to note that despite the film’s futile narrative and the ways it illustrates mankind’s inability to get out of its own way, Don’t Look Up still left me feeling like there is hope for us. After all, comedy is the medicine we take to cope with reality. Expand

It actually, properly articulates and illustrates the terribly unfortunate idiosyncrasies of our society - from the Politics to Ariana Grande. It's likely very fair to think that: "if Covid-19 was a massive comet hurtling towards the earth, this is what could happen". But - It is also hilarious, sad, chilling, and deeply troubling to watch. Probably one of the saddest and scariest movies of the year.

The movie boasts an incredible heavy weight ensemble cast and absolutely no one disappoints. Special mention goes to the amazing chemistry between many of the characters as they work fantastically well with each other: Blanchett-DiCaprio, Perry-Blanchett, Lawrence-Hill and cheers to Timothee Chalamet for stealing that scene at the end.

Admittedly, the movie sometimes try to be overly-styled (or especially artsy) which is totally unnecessary - but that doesn't detract from the overall movie itself.

Don't Look Up is a beauty. I was not expecting it to be profound but it was and I definitely do not regret watching it - I recommend it highly, it is a must watch.

A film written and directed (before the pandemic) trying to make a parody about how the politicians and newscast react to an imminent extinction, it feels so familiar and sometimes nothing far from reality.
If you really want to enjoy this emotional trip, you have to tolerate absurd black comedy that this film handles, very stupid and unconscious. With that in mind, you'll be absorbed in this upsetting story and sense everything that the film wants to transmit, from heartwarming scenes to tense moments.
The performances were excellent, one of the best cast of the year, some of them taken advantage of 100% and some others completely replaceable due to its low participation. But undoubtedly, Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence are reason enough to watch this film.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Most reviews say "its not a comedy" "its a bad comedy" or "the jokes are kinda weird in a apocaliptic movie" and... thats the point, is only a comedy for people who already know everything that happens in the real world, how this is... way too close, and decide to deal with it by joking while trying to do something about it cause we are too weak to deal with it directly. I love how all characters are at least bydimensionals, having literally all deniers that moment of "hey, i believe in my politics, but im being treated as a fool"(which they are)"So **** this guys" is good, really cool, how it doesnt go the really easy way of "those are all dumb people and we the bad guys" it does say something new? Probably not, no idea, im not a critic, but it says the right things the right way and talks about something that most mainstream movies (probably there are a lot that dont, but again, idk) just ignore and say "If humanity is in danger everyone will sudently agree, usa will be the best nation, help everyone and solve the problems while the rest just sit down and all america agrees cause saving the planet is easy." Also it does kinda help to avoid the actual problem? Maybe, dont think so, but maybe someone will ignore the actual problems in the actual world, i feel most people will do the oposite and is cool to see this movies, even if they are the 232343 movie of saying the same thing (which i dont think they are, but again again, idk) Also i really liked it so im putting it even high than i think others with my same points would put it is not a ten because idk if im just very hyped. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I straight up enjoyed Don't Look Up. Overall the movie has this see-saw of tonality, where it starts off with a very serious concept, slowly pushes down into a canyon of comedy, only swing back up into a peak of seriousness. The tonal shift caused a bit of uncertainty in what to expect, though I believe the shift upwards was much easier to digest than the initial shift.

The acting was fantastic overall, Leo and Jennifer Lawrence played the straight role well, Kid Cudi and Ariana's bits provided comedic relief and social satire, and the absolute absurdity of Meryl Streep, Jonah Hill, and Ron Pearlman were fantastic absurdist satire. With a cast like this, I'm not surprised with the quality of the acting, it's an A++ list.

More than the acting, the movie has a good sense of cinematography. The nature reels were gorgeous, and at times impactful to the overall message.

I can see why the story is going to piss people off. It's heavy satire. There's nothing subtle about it, even coming off as a caricature more often than not. I don't think the director had intentions of this being a deep movie, it's an absurdist dramedy satire, and I think that other than some slow pacing in the middle early second-half of the film, it was done well.

I've once read that a great ending can leave an impression that a mediocre movie was better than it was. I think that Don't Look Up is a good movie, with a great ending. The scene at the dinner table, admittedly, made my eyes a bit wet. It was sweet and peaceful. The during-credits scene on the new planet was hilarious, especially the call-back to the line about how Meryl Streep was going to die.

I enjoyed the film. I'm not going to take it too seriously, I highly doubt that it is particularly meant to be. From what I've read, it's simply commentary on how laissez-faire we are, as a society, about climate change, and sorta poking fun at it. I dig it.

It still resulted in a good film with some solid humor, great performances, and a willingness to touch on many different (terrible) elements of society, from the awful political landscape and the lack of care for fellow humans, to more niche aspects like toxic positivity and awful echo-chambers promoted by the media and tech moguls. While it seems to be on the right track in the first half of the film, the second half is where it stumbles a bit, namely due to the thematic elements becoming far too heavy-handed and unrefined to land properly. It felt the need to really hammer home its messages to the audience so blatantly that the film's satire loses its deftness dramatically and plays like its audience is stupid. The film also is way too long and should've been trimmed by about 20-30 minutes. Adam McKay was so close to putting together a masterful satire about the current state of the world. While he hits home runs in certain respects, he strikes out in others, creating a good film that really missed out on its potential to be a great one. I'd probably give it somewhere between a 7 and an 8 in the end. Expand

Maybe those haters are exactly the people who are offended for being called out because they consistently choose to believe snake oil salesmen instead of scientists. Adam McKay has managed to create a funny, satirical disaster movie that is the most accurate depiction of what would happen if today's world was faced with the 100% chance of an asteroid destroying earth. The reaction to the world's imminentAdam McKay has managed to create a funny, satirical disaster movie that is the most accurate depiction of what would happen if today's world was faced with the 100% chance of an asteroid destroying earth. The reaction to the world's imminent end is both hilarious and terrifying. Don't Look Up may not be for everyone but I loved it.

Astronomers Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence) and Dr. Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio) make the terrifying discovery that a comet is heading straight for earth and without immediate action this "planet killer" will end life as they know it in 6 months. After a dissatisfying meeting with President Meryl Streep the two astronomers go on a media tour to warn the world of their discovery. They are left further shocked when the entire population doesn't seem to care that an asteroid is hurtling towards earth.

If I could sum up Don't Look Up in one word it would be chaotic. Very much drawing a lot of inspiration from real life events you're left feeling like "oh sh!t, this is scarily close to how we'd react to an incoming asteroid, we really are all gonna die." It's a darkly funny take on a genre that's been done again and again. Rather than a disaster movie with "insert generic end of the world catastrophe here" that can only be saved by a rugged Gerard Butler type action hero, Don't Look Up sets up the end of the world scenario and then focuses on how humans as a whole react or rather don't react. Also taking in the impact of social media, corrupt politicians and billionaires looking to seize on the opportunity. Along with Adam McKay's witty script you also has a wonderful star studded cast, so what's not to love? After the last two years I needed a good laugh and Don't Look Up certainly did the trick.

What more do I need to say? If you haven't already taken the time over the Christmas break to watch Don't Look Up then be sure to check it out. It might be a little dragged out in the beginning but I assure you it's worth the wait. Recommended for all those film buffs who love a good disaster movie.

Cons: Preaches to the choir

Clever, and anxiety-inducing — but not necessarily funny, save for Jonah Hill

Verdict: Finds plenty to satirize in our culture, punching up and down, but picks political sides in the battle for our minds - could’ve gone further (and more punk) to make a more surprising and balanced jab in the ribs

The point that the main subject of the movie is an asteroid on its way to obliterate earth is one thing.
But what it really is rubbing hardest again is actually human intelligence. It is a black, head-on satire on modern society that we live in today, and you know it is not very far of the mark. Human beings have become so estranged in social media and self-publicity that any major world event will be ridiculed.
We saw it when Covid emerged. No one cared until it was on our doorstep.
I had great laughs trough out this film. Highly enjoyed this dark comedy with good performances from most of the cast. Shame it got panned. I think it is the most significant movie in a long time regarding us people as a "intelligent" species.

In this day and age, a large population of the world does not believe what they see, and abhor science, logic and rational thinking. Instead, a thin privileged slice of humanity is immune to empathy for those less fortunate and insists on a steady diet of sweet coated lies. It seems a large chunk of us simply lack the digestive system to absorb difficult truths. But then again mass rejection of facts runs rampant all over the world. Dicaprio and Lawrence give outstanding performances as sincere and dedicated scientists, absolutely dumbstruck by the apathy and arrogance of figures in authority. The rest of the heavy-hitting cast delivers strong performances too, especially Hill, Streep and Blanchet, as is expected. This movie is a wake-up call for society. Whether it is a planet threatening virus or comet, all of us need to get back to rational thinking, logical analysis and open-mindedness. Not everything is a conspiracy, use your common sense, hopefully, some is remaining. Expand

Netflix gives it an impressive Hollywood treatment. The big name cast and polished script manages to comment on or allude to the previous presidential administration's fecklessness and the current administration and congress's challenge at actually getting anything done in the midst of our national obsession with reality TV, social media, likes, toothless congressional committees afraid to act, and 15-minutes-of-fame politicians using current challenges to up their personal profiles and self-created importance. Not only does the project boast a cast worthy of being called “A-list”, casting director Francine Maisler, does an outstanding job with the casting itself. Netflix continues to up the ante by demonstrating the level to which they are willing to put an impressive amount of resources behind quality projects. The main cast of 18 credited actors includes among them, 6 oscar winners in acting categories; 2 more oscar nominees also in acting categories; a Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award winner; and 3 emmy award winners or nominees. The director and writer Adam McKay is an oscar winning screenwriter and nominee for best director. The actors deliver on all counts with Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, and Meryl Streep at the top of their game. Cate Blanchett and Tyler Perry are a hilarious duo spoofing the cheery banter and personality-driven morning news shows.

Production value is top notch as expected. The look of the film emulates a kind of slick superficial overly-filtered imagery so common in the social media culture it pokes at and in so doing ... looks great - credit to cinematographer Linus Sandgren, the art direction team, and production designer Clayton Hartley. Special effects are on par with top film productions and that's no small achievement given what we take for granted as part of films due to technological advancements, especially where special effects are concerned. The scenes of global disaster are not only impressively violent, but they are spectacularly well done. Nicholas Britell (2 time oscar nominee and emmy winner for original scores) delivers a soundtrack that works on many levels. It references the caper films of the 60s and 70s, and easily shifts to more wistful celestial sounds during interspersed scenes of nature, and the earth’s varied landscape reminding us that global events don’t just effect people … just as … oh, I don’t know … climate change doesn’t just effect humans but all living creatures on both land and in the seas.

Don't Look Up will be hard for some to watch because it says what many have been saying for the past 5 years socially and politically. The film also presses forward grimly with its expected outcome. As entertainment, the film has a solid story line with interesting and credible side stories woven nicely into the plot without wavering from the films primary purpose which I think is for us to remember that this our lives make up "real life" and are not part of a television show. We are not extras on a set somewhere. The actions or inactions of our government have consequences. Let’s hope the message will finally sink in with this film.

Written and directed by Adam McKay who is no stranger to such movies with his previous outings such as The Big Short, a film about the 2008 housing crisis and economic crash, and VICE, a film about Dick Cheney's tenure, with both having a strong layer of satire embedded in the narrative and so I was excited to check this out. Another hit from the man.

My enjoyment of this movie boils down to two main reasons:

1) Growing up, I was a huge fan of Disaster or end-of-the-world scenario movies regardless of what is bringing that end and two of my favourites from that time were Armageddon and Deep Impact, both dealing with a large Asteroid impact, so I was naturally giddy with excitement when a modern movie with a similar scenario came out and dealt with that subject matter in a satirical tone. A fresh experience of something I love.

2) The social commentary on the state of the modern world and several avenues in it as what would the world do if Humanity is faced with this extinction event whether it is politics, mainstream media, social media, big tech companies, science, the youth, family etc, and giving jabs to both sides of the political spectrum. Some of it is heavy-handed and too on the nose going to absurdism while some of it is subtle and that created a fun balance. It also can be horrifying as to how close to home it hits with all the nonsense that is happening nowadays.

Of course, the movie wouldn't have been great without having a large and talented cast, all of whom gave good-great performances, enhancing your attachment or disdain for the characters according to the plot. My favourite was without a doubt, Leonardo DiCaprio. The dude's amazing in everything I've watched and this was no exception. Seeing him in a scientist role struggling to deal with the sheer stupidity at hand from the Govt. and the media made me frustrated as well, alongside the co-star Jennifer Lawrence, who was also great. I like that while it is a comedy, it walks the line between serious and absurd rather well. If it was all goofy and funny, it wouldn't have had the impact it wanted to have.

Well directed, written and shot with erratic editing that works for a movie like this as it keeps the momentum going. Without giving anything away, I do, however, wish that we got to see a bit more towards the end. Also, I did miss Adam McKay's style of 4th wall breaks or the fake obvious wrap-ups but considering it is a fictional tale and not based on a historical event or personality, maybe it wouldn't have worked here.

Overall, I enjoyed it a lot, this was right up my alley. It is definitely amongst the best of 2021 for me. If you like satire or if the premise interests you, I'd recommend giving this a watch. And if I were to rate it, I'd give it a solid 8/10.

Don't Look Up is one of my favourite movies of the year. It's a painfully accurate and sad dissection of our world today and how the agenda of those in power impacts us.

McKay manages to balance levity with tragedy, keeping the story fun and comedic while still invoking such stress and frustration. This ensemble of A-list stars do not disappoint, and all do a fantastic job elevating this material. Leonardo DiCaprio is, once again, a standout, and gives one of my favourite performances of the year.

It definitely isn't clever or subtle, and not all of the technical choices worked for me, but I still thoroughly enjoyed myself with this one.

The film highlights important and currently relevant themes such as social media, "political activism", and corrupt leadership. It also features great performances, primarily those of DiCaprio and Lawrence. It seemed that the immense stakes of the story took a bit away from the lead characters and left them feeling a bit underwritten, but much of this was made up for by the terrific lead acting. They made emotional moments that shouldn't have worked some of the best parts of the movie. I also found that most of the comedy really hit for me with Jonah Hill in particular being a highlight in this respect. My one other flaw was that the film had a few side plots that seemed a bit extraneous, but many of these wound up having at least some pay off. In summary, Don't Look Up is hilarious and extremely topical in today's world. I would absolutely recommend giving it a watch. Expand

But what lies on the surface is not what we are delighted with. Not once during its 2 hour-ish runtime did I feel taken-aback by an actors predictable nature, quite the opposite. Every performance is outstanding and well casted - even popular artists such as Ariana Grande and Kid Cudi arrive with some truly hilarious moments and quips, well acted.

What performances make up for is the often mixed tone - a comedic approach to an existential disaster film. While the first half struggles to keep a grip on its ideals, the second comes in swooping and delivers some of the best metaphors, jokes, and social commentary in movies yet - even if it tends to be extreme to the point of annoyance. With its sporadic editing, and amazing performances, Don't Look Up ends up being one of the best movies of this past year, delivering an experience with more meaning wrapped behind its obvious social commentary and well-written comedy - one of the few films that can singlehandedly create a loss of hope and a rebuilding at once.

Don’t Look Up is hardly subtle with a satire, but it’s fairly effective at pointing out the absurdity of modern politics and the way people increasingly seem to think they know better than qualified experts. Of course, the targets of this satire probably won’t change their minds, but either way it’s a pretty entertaining movie. Expand

Di Caprio, Lawrence, Streep, Rylance, Blanchett, Chalamet....wow. This is the film's biggest draw. Obviously, they are all excellent, so much so that I feel that they have exceeded the material at hand. This is McKay's attempt to marry two sides of his film making skill, hard nosed comedy and drama. On one hand, it is too blunt to be a satire. Having the message being bludgeoned to the audience, on the nose so too speak made the film's message redundant. However, kudos again for the casts, bringing their A-game to this effort. Expand

While not particularly clever, I was entertained throughout. Watching it I was thinking how any republican voting person is going to hate this movie and every democrat voting person is going to be like the Leonardo di Caprio meme figure going smugly pointing at the TV going 'yeah, that!'.
The state of our union I suppose - sad as it is.

Tremendously watchable, in a good way. Social commentary at pretty much every level without being too preachy. Outrageous cast, great pacing and just a good all around movie. This one casts a wide net and delivers on most of it.

Adam McKay strikes on a serious note once again, but with comedy. He is almost like a Vonnegut of film, taking heady themes and putting into layman's terms biting satire. He is almost like a Vonnegut of film, taking heady themes and putting into layman's terms biting satire. Far from McKay's best, but still worth the watch just on themes alone, plus great and subdued performance by Leo, which is refreshing to see. Ignore the bad reviews, it's just political disagreement. This is a satire on real life things that some people just don't want to acknowledge. Your going to see a lot of bad reviews for trolling reasons, ignore them. They could have trimmed maybe a half hour off it, but it's still a quality film by McKay. Expand

For me rating is somewhere between 6 and 7. It is a nice satire, but not really that memorable movie you would remember much later.
