Amazing movie, too much has to be said that can't fit in this paragraph. I will say though that you feel true emotion for the aliens as they struggle to stay alive.

Possibly the most weirdest, most emotional, mindfuck of a movie i have seen all year. it may seem strange but is a powerful view on what happens when the aliens are the weaker race and how humanity responds to them. A brilliant movie.

Half-way through the movie that changed For once, a science fiction movie targeted to people who can *think* for themselves. It honestly gets to you when you least expect it. I felt like bitch-slapping the main character in the beginning. Half-way through the movie that changed into me being on the verge of tears from the guilt and shame I was feeling for what could have been actual human behavior were this true. And I was just about ready to yell and cheer (for the aliens, heh) in the end. Like another guy said, a movie that makes you root for the ugly-looking aliens that don't speak a word of English is a good movie indeed. To those of you who didn't like it, please take into consideration that this wasn't a movie meant to make you feel all nice and cozy about how "nice" and "good" humans are and how the good-looking hero will always save the day. That was actually what usually bugged me the most in most Hollywood blockbusters. The world is a pink-tinted fairy-tale where good guys never die (or if they do, they get showered with honor) and humans are the finest specimen of life. Pftt. I see that and raise you a District 9. The moment you make the effort to understand the deep message you will enjoy it. It isn't a comedy, it isn't a horror movie, there is a little romance and the action is more instrumental in making a point than to entertain. As another reviewer said. this movie doesn't offer cheap thrills, it grabs you by your eyeballs, makes you feel uneasy/ashamed and filters right down to your heart. It isn't for all audiences but it is a masterpiece of a movie, constantly evoking strong and heartfelt emotions and continually providing shocks. There's a lot to be taken from this movie, however it'snot the usual light-hearted fare. When compared to war of the worlds this movie really shines. They are similar movies but this doesn't get boring, it is taught, intense and thrilling. A bit less gore than war of the worlds but infinitely more human brutality and excellent 'movement' enhanced by the camera work and interview format of certain parts. Expand

Sometimes bordering on genius but in the second half of the movie is when they are going completely in the hands and puts us in an action movie American heroics and ending by charging a very interesting project. If you are looking for a summer Blockbuster action film, this isn't it. It's gritty, violent, ruthless and coldblooded, just like much of our world. But like our world, it has redeeming qualities; goodness, hope and redemption. I can understand people wanting the plot wrapped up in a prettier package with a nice bow, but that's not this movie. It isn't perfect, there are some plot holes, but show me a movie or book that doesn't have plot holes. The plot is very original in it's execution. I can usually see where a story is going, to the point that I annoy people by figuring out what's going to happen all the time. I didn't know where this one was going. The film makers do not walk you through the movie holding your hand. It is not a guided tour. Don't expect to know everything, you won't. In this movie it works very, very well. What you don't know isn't necessary to understanding what's going on or why. It gives you something to discuss with others after the fact, but doesn't take away from the story at all. That aspect of the film makes it MORE fun to watch. For me. You decide for yourself. The CG was flawlessly integrated, which is so nice to see. They did an exquisite job. I got a good 45 minutes into the movie before I remembered that of course the aliens were CGI, but I never once was I visually jarred out of the film by blatant CGI. I would go so far as to say it is the best CGI mixed into real footage I have ever seen. Over all, worth seeing if darker stories are your thing. Think, BSG. Expand

As has been said many times before, the first 20 minutes are incredibly strange but well carried off, and manages to bizarrely mix realism and comedy gold in a documentary format on aliens coming to Earth. Absolute gold there, and while the rest of the movie tends away from this style and becomes more serious in tone, it is a heart-wrenching and well-delivered sci-fi that is not an entirely brainless gorefest (though it does have some amazing effects on display - amazing considering the budget). I think simply the fact it is delivered in such an original way and qualifies as a sci-fi blockbuster as well as a thinking man's movie makes it a must-watch. Expand

There are a lot of holes in the storyline because it loses all sense of plot by getting too wrapped up in portraying apartheid. For example, how can the two species understand each other so perfectly when neither one can speak the others language? How does the main human character know how to use alien technology that he hasn't seen before? Why is the alien fuel only found on Earth and if the aliens are so desperate to get home why is only one of them looking for it? All in all this is a fairly terrible film, I expected big things from Peter Jackson after Lord Of The Rings but after looking at some of his other work it seems like he can't make a decent film without guidelines from a book. An allegory to the the human drama know as apartheid? If it was an allegory to that, you surely wouldn't want to set it in Johannesburg would you? that's like making an allegory to Nazi Germany while filming a tale set in Nazi Germany.... This kind of stupidity doesn't bother anyone anymore? Aliens who eat cat food as an allegory to drug use? Do all you ten-voters also still watch Sesame Street or something? D9 is nothing less than a completely farcical and generic action fodder hailed as the second coming of Christ featuring the most nauseating and lazy style of filming known as mockumentary with actors bereft of any professional acting skills and a script which is roughly made up on the spot with an f-bombs galore to hide the fact that the screenwriter signed off when he was told to quit being such a pain in the butt. "It's only a movie man!", or so he was told. No, no one is bothered by this. We turn off our brains as we laud the FX puppeteer for serving us yet another upgrade in CGI rendering as we cry ourselves to sleep from the joy that is living in these blissful times where real emotion is thankfully replaced by bandwagon hype and comfortable contrivances that won't occur in real life anyway. How terribly complacent it is to not have to worry about an actual sensical three act structure when you've got all this marketing budget to throw around allowing you to already cash in on the prefabricated acclaim and Pavlov conditioning of the crowds way before the movie is even actually screened. Our malawian gardener who comes to us once a week always gets himself robbed by nigerians when returning to the townships, we have opened a bank account for him so that doesnt carry cash anymore. Our friends in JHB had their son killed because a nigerian gang kidnapped him and asked for a ransom, which our friends paid for, and they killed him anyway. So yes, its very very appropriate to include them in the movie. The ruwandans, mocambiqueans, botswananas, malawians and all manner of neighbouring africans who have flocked into SA are corralled into the worst parts of every township and are called "aliens" locally. Racism? Well the white guys are depicted as the baddies and the black guys in MNU are the nicest humans so the racist card is not that clear. I find it amusing that people who would walk out of a movie only 20 minutes into it can write reviews and have any sort of intelligent opinion. The director clearly states that he didnt need to patronise the audience by explaining every little angle and leaves much to audience. A good movie is one that gets people thinking and talking and this movie sure does that !! I understood the brilliance of the movie when seeing it the second time and so much fell into place that I couldnt take in the first time because it was so intense. Hopefully the academy will do their due diligence and try and understand the social and criminal context, the accent and ignore some of the super ignorant reviews that have been written by folk who cant understand a movie unless it spoonfeeds and stars Will Smith !! The target audience seemed to be the teenagers around me laughing at all the fake special effects. Many elements of the movie also made no sense logically. One problem was too many thinly veiled references to different ethnic groups that have been persecuted over the years (blacks, immigrants, Jews, etc.). It was as if the aliens were experiencing all these forms of persecution at the same time, regardless of any chronological or historical context. All in all, the movie was not very well made. You can not miss out, I dont want to wreck the story but I will say, you will be suprised and please dont read the discription that is given by MetaCritic as it reveals to much, this is one of those movies like I am Legend which is kept hidden and you have to watch it yourself to find out what it is really about, you cant just watch the trailer. Back to the movie, it is very realistic, no over the top action, it has low budget and has followed in the footsteps of Lord of the Rings (excluding the music, well maybe because I didnt pay attention to the music, maybe I will like it if I watch the movie again). They just want to watch it and... thats about it, they never appreciate it. But please dont listen to what I am saying, movies unlike games, can not be judges, every one will like something totally different. Games gets judged on things like how well the controls are, how many glitches there are, how fun it is to play, etc. But movies are judged on their story, every one likes a different story line and I NEVER listen to one of these stupid critics who think they are so great and every thing they say is right. So let's clarify what exactly there is to 'get' from this film. 1) Crazily good CGI 2) One good scene of things being blown to pieces, which is kind of just CGI, too. 3) Oh, and, it's a film about discrimination, yeah, like, set in South Africa, which is ironic, isn't it, because it's, like, a really discriminatory place, and stuff, and they're doing the same here only with aliens, which makes it a satire, apparently. nothing else. really. and that third point about its being a satire/allegory was sarcastic (the film goes about as far as to say "look, the aliens are being discriminated against, like black people", before then throwing in a bunch of wildly stereotypical, cocaine-addled black characters.) and..the second point was kind of the same as the first.. so essentially there was only one thing to 'get' in this film - that someone's really good with CGI, and should probably be using their talents to make better movies. This is the crux of my review, so you can stop reading here and go see the movie if you like, or alternatively save your money and your time and put them to better use. If you have nothing else to do, here are some more specific criticisms I wanted it to move in to something more farcical or darkly comic, as it gave hints that it might do, and it quickly became clear that it might be the only move that Expand

However, as the story progresses and the situation gets more serious, you really get to see his character change. One of the things I like most about District 9 is that when you finally get to that climactic battle scene, it turns up the intensity level and never lets up. And the documentary style actually worked. I know what you're thinking, we've seen faux documentaries before, but in District 9 it truly feels fresh and new. I'm not saying this movie is perfect. I read over a few reviews about story line and people questioning why things were the way they were, and the best way to explain why they didnt understand the movie is simple:They didnt pay any attention. I thought the movie was top notch. Main actor made since in acting how anyone would if they were trying to survive and were in a f-ed up situation. Plot was very original. The movie "if you paid attention" kept you very much into the the plot and the cg aliens looked like something different for a change than your typical alien. Little alien kid was cool, made you feel sorry for the little dude. The only thing I wouldnt recommend is that they resist making a sequel to it. Leave it how it is, the only way to make it bad is by trying to milk more money from it. Lastly with peoples issues with race in the movie, its the 21st century. Why dont we actually take a look at how things really are and notice it. Its just another very emotional trait that can be used in films that does make sense and that we can relate to. Expand

D9 is an unapologetic South African Sci-Fi. It tries to please nobody but itself - science fiction for south Africa, and south Africa alone. The layers of humor and social messages can only be really laughed at by South Africans, but they carry potent, hilarious, and often poisonous messages. At the same time, the film is a very clear salute to Hollywood: A thank-you letter from Soweto to LA, in a way... it takes references to south African life and blends them, creating a new, hyper-real and bizarrely interesting sci f landscape. The film explores the uncomfortable world of apartheid and many of its bizarre bureaucratic idiosyncrasies; at the same time it touches on scores of south African issues; from gangsterism to Muti killings; it rolls so many south African things up into a little ball, and then re-molds them in a Hollywood shape. As an abstract cultural exercise alone, D9 is extremely interesting; it represents turning point for African film fiction: the arrival of the popcorn movie. For Americans, this is not of interest at all; they've been watching popcorn flicks for years. For Africa, however, this is the first film of it's kind and as such it has immediately made it to the level of "important movie" in the developing world. It's this kind of film that will help to continue the process of emerging capitalist cultures that are attempting to establish their own voice within the resounding clamor of globalization. It's not scared of who it is, It's not afraid to be itself and it thus stands on two very strong legs. D9 is an underdog; an african film that, for the first time in history; topped the world box office... so, whatever your opinion of it might be; D9 kicked some serious ass. VIVA D9 VIVA. amandla. As for the plot being based on Apartheid, that is only partially true...in fact the issue of 'aliens' can be more recently linked the the 2008 xenophobic attacks across South Africa, particularly in the settlements where Black South Africans were forced to move to during Apartheid. In these attacks black people from other African countries were attacked by black South Africans for, amongst other things, being too black...so the story has a greater message about how the abjected often become the oppressor. Also, the plot was a good idea but executed poorly. It could have been a real thought provoking film about the treatment of different looking creatures (mirroring real life events) and possibly even a cult classic...but thanks to bad execution, shocking main character dialogue, pretty bad action scenes towards the end and the fact that the african smuggler guys in the slum were portrayed as hysterical and crazy. come on, it was stereotyping african tribes as being almost bloodthirsty and superstitious! so...why a rating of 2? well, my mates and i pissed ourselves everytime somebody or something got shot and exploded. they even fired a cow at someone. also, the leader of the slum gang got an hilariously O.T.T death that made me almost cry at the stupidity of it. i actually thought it was a black comedy until i discovered otherwise. Not only is this the best film of the summer, its the best film of this year (so far). The acting of spot on, the computer effects were incredible and the action scene at the end blew me away and left me on the edge of my seat (although it did go on a bit long). It was really interesting and strangely moving to see this happy go lucky man turn into a monster by the end (by his actions, not appearance, i'm trying not to spoil anything) and it just shows that maybe the aliens aren't the real monsters on our planet. The reason i'm giving it a 9 was because after an amazing action sequence, the writers must have thought "crap, we have only 5 minutes to end the story" so the ending comes across as very very rushed. But the 110 minutes leading up to that is modern sci-fi at its finest. It just goes to show that you don't need a huge budget and a well know cast and crew to make an amazing film. Blacks in South Africa were treated this way, and had to endure such hardships, in concentration camp type settlements. As far as the aliens being cardboard cutouts, that is similar to what the blacks had to endure. They weren't allowed an identity, weren't listened to, and weren't allowed, in many cases. to even speak their own language. They were moved against their will if whites didn't want them in their neighbourhood. I think this movie nails that on the head without being too obvious about it. The lead actor was amazing. Consider that most of his roll and his lines were adlibbed before you criticize the writing. His transformation was incredibly and convincing, both in his character and his appearance. Fantastic movie! Expand

It's 2009 and amazing that movies are completely dull, boring, non-entertaining. I feel most are just to "trick" you to spend money. My 6 year old could make a better plot. We in the U.S. are becoming numb.

This is one of the best films I have ever seen. A great commentary on how we treat people who may be different to us.

Gritty. Funny. Gory. Intense. Original. All-action. Empathy-wielding. Epic.

I don't usually bother to review movies, but this one was soooo bad I felt compelled to have my say. I went with my partner to see it, and after 5 minutes my partner actually said to me "are you ready to leave yet"?? I said, "yes, but I don't usually bother to review movies, but this one was soooo bad I felt compelled to have my say. I went with my partner to see it, and after 5 minutes my partner actually said to me "are you ready to leave yet"?? I said, "yes, but it got such good reviews maybe we should stick with it and see if it gets better". Boy was I in the dog box. The so-called "allegorical social commentary" was so blatant and poorly done that a 3 year old could have got it. The acting appeared to be off-the-cuff, with f**k thrown in whenever the script faltered, the attempt at amateur doco film making was so bad that it was worse than most amateur docos (and left us both feeling nauseous with the jumping swaying camera angles). The humor was there, sure, but it wasn't worth more than a slight smile to think, for instance, of aliens being addicted to cat food (including the can). The humor was neither subtle nor very funny. The action scenes were typical of all action movies, and the special effects were not anything new in this age of digital special effects offerings. The plot was incohesive and pretty much pointless with zero character development. The movie brings nothing new to cinema, just a mismashed rehash of the same old same old with plenty of gore thrown in. Expand

Excellent technical accomplishment and really original. This is not your typical sci fi alien concept. I missed some more info about what is going on with the aliens. Why are they on earth? I missed some more info about what is going on with the aliens. Why are they on earth? Why can't they go home? Why does Cristopher leave alone? How come such an advanced and refined race in technology is so primitive in all other aspects? Although the linear plot works well, I also missed some twist. Expand
