Absolutely fantastic. In beginning of movie we had an impression that things will not go good. But, as the history goes, we can clearly see how good it is. A week man is charged as a leader of extra-terrestrial control MNU, only because the Absolutely fantastic. In beginning of movie we had an impression that things will not go good. A week man is charged as a leader of extra-terrestrial control MNU, only because the wish of move aliens out of City is illegal and dangerous. But this man overcomes what was expected from him, and more, starts a strongly sentimental relationship with one alien, been a real leader. Another fact that really is touching is that the aliens has a feeling between parents, just like humans (for us they look like insects only). Note 10 for history. Great Idea! Beaten to a pulp. The lead actor didn't carry his role anywhere, of course the script didn't give him anywhere to take it. I liked the South African setting and political backstory and the social commentary, but that Great Idea! Beaten to a pulp. I loved it, it's a good movie, it does not a slow start to the action, but overall it does have a good story. They don't explain every little detail, they leave it up in the air, much like real life. *SPOLIERS* The humans are just guessing that the ship is out of fuel, etc. The truth is, that the humans are only theorizing on why they are on earth and why they can't go back. It was even mentioned in the first 10 minutes of the movie, but i see most of the negative reviews missed that point completely. It does have a shaky cam sometimes, but if you play video games or are under 30, it shouldn't be a problem at all. It's a good summer action flick which doesn't take much thought. Don't listen to the bad reviews.… Expand

What a complete waste of time. I'm not sure if the naseau feeling was from the shacking cameras or the quality of the film. Favourite film of the year so far. Although I can appreciate why some people wouldn't enjoy aspects of it, it will clearly hit home for a lot of the more open-minded and imaginative movie-goers. This film is raw, unpretty, shaky, crude and probably has a budget much less than Hollywood ones. I enjoyed this one much more than any Hollywood movie. It left me on the verge of sobbing into my hankie.

I was really eager to like this film, but there were some major story problems. E.g., why have the aliens not rebelled in 20 years despite the fact that they have advanced weaponry? Why does the head of the multinational corporation place I was really eager to like this film, but there were some major story problems. E.g., why have the aliens not rebelled in 20 years despite the fact that they have advanced weaponry? Why does the head of the multinational corporation place his son-in-law, a total doofus, in charge of the relocation (and what was the purpose of the relocation anyway)? And would the father-in-law really be so evil that he doesn't stop the grotesque medical experiments on his son-in-law? How come the prawns mysteriously vanish from District 9 only to resurface abruptly at the end? And why are the humans so incredibly stupid and gullible about the corporation's true intentions? Also, why does the film adopt a mockumentary format but repeatedly shift to a more cinematic tone? How do the aliens and the humans communicate, anyway? I could go on, but it was these and other problems that prevented me from taking the film's "message" seriously (well, that and that not-quite-convincing CGI, which makes the aliens seems slightly cartoonish). Suffice it to say, it's actually something of a relief when the film becomes another stupid action movie in the final act, if only because the movie drops any pretense of being a deep and profound meditation on prejudice and economic inequality. As an audience, you really just want to see heads explode, which the movie delivers in spades. One final word of advice to the director: it's not necessary to explain via voiceover absolutely everything that we see on the screen. Thanks, I have a brain and the plot isn't really that complicated.… Expand

I empathized and connected more with Christopher(the main prawn character) more than most human actors. Story was interesting and well paced. For not having well known "accomplished" actors, they did a really good job. Makes the Hollywood big budget projects of the summer like TF2,GIjoe and Terminator look like utter b-movie failures. The only sci-fi/actioner of the summer on a similar level to this would be the StarTrek reboot. Go see it, and forget the misguided and tasteless haters.… Expand

As a South African I went to watch the movie expecting it to be worse than what the reviews said. I'm tired of all the racism stories and well I wasn't expecting anything good. Wow I was wrong. I have just returned from seeing it at the multiplex. Terrific movie that slowly grabs you and drags you along for the ride whether or not you want to go. This movie tore at me in a way not many can. I left with an empty hurt place in my heart. I loved that the aliens were not pretty, the action was just right to make it fun to the lay viewer. The emotion brought up between the main character and his wife and an alien and his child will make you tear up, and the ending will bring a big old grin to your face. Every actor isn't a cliche and you have never seen on the big screen, however this does not make them bad actors, they are brilliant! Sharlto Coprey gives an amazing performance! If you want some action, you'll find it, and it won't completely bore you. Alright, America is in trouble. We have lost our artistic compass. I was excited to see this movie. The movie throws you off balance immediately with a lead human character who can barely act. The movie throws you off balance immediately with a lead human character who can barely act. It was like trying to follow the dialogue in a Monty Python episode. I lot of stumbling. He was unlikable because the actual actor couldn't act. Then, we have the plot holes. As one reviewer put it, "you could drive a mother-ship through them." The aliens somehow had way better weapons than us, yet they chose to be treated the way they did. When push came to shove, they were violent, so don't give me some explanation about them being docile. This movie was better than a lot of the 2s and 3s being released lately, but they really threw this movie together. I wonder if the producers and directors get to see the entire movie and, after which, can make changes. Perhaps there's no time for it. If I were Jackson and i was able to watch the whole movie then make changes, I would have refilmes about half of the movie. They could have made a 10/10, but speed is more valuable than quality anymore.… Expand

The Movie filled with characters that are easy to empathize with, and are well developed. First 20 minutes are really slow, after that though its a roller coaster ride that will keep you on the edge of your seat the entire time.

The story is told from Wikus, who's closer to an average person than most action thrillers, as he has major flaws (such as marrying up to get a promotion "unexpectedly", selfish but an honest worker) who gets caught up in the midst of a conflict when he absent mindedly fools around with a canister, which roller coasters into fights that include but not limited to; Mechs, nasty as hell alien weaponry, Military vs Gang war, lots of blood and more. The fight scenes are well done, without the lens flares and ADHD camera handling. Even the stuff between the action is interesting, as it shows Wikus's life shattering and morphing before him as well as other life changing scenes for him and those around him. Incredible movie. I do not see why people would not want to see it. The plot seemed fine and the aliens seems mysterious (on purpose). Was hoping it would turn out great, got sucked up by all the hype. Was disappointed by all of the mish mash of different sci fi flavors. Ground-breaking, superb presentation of background. Terrible story & characters. If you love Sci-Fi, as I do, this film is worth seeing, simply for the interesting realm in which it takes place. (For example, only once in the show do I see Ground-breaking, superb presentation of background. Terrible story & characters. If you love Sci-Fi, as I do, this film is worth seeing, simply for the interesting realm in which it takes place. (For example, only once in the show do I see an alien acting distinctly human as it strikes an inanimate object in frustration.) Otherwise, avoid this movie. Stupid aliens with advanced tech has been done many times, and much, much better in print. Flat characters with no redeeming qualities is rarely done in film or print, because it works so poorly. My initial impression of the show was: Cool. My final impression was: Rats. I'm truly astonished that this film is so intensely satisfying for so many people, when for me it ranks with Alien vs. Predator and Tomb Raider 2...it was OK.… Expand

I felt no sympathy for Wikas at any time during this movie. He was a wimpy bully who only cared about himself. The idiot infected himself and then made the aliens pay for his mistake. What could have been a classic of storytelling is reduced to a decent movie compared to this season's other examples of bad summer films, i.e.,Transformers 2. Too bad. Perhaps this is what audiences want; mind numbing audio and video that buries a truly interesting film beneath it. Do yourself a favor and watch the original 6 minute short 'Alive in Joburg' by director Neill Blomkamp and you will see in what direction the longer film should have gone into. The first 30 minutes of 'District 9' is astonishingly good, but then the film degenerates into a mindless entertainment that gives the viewer too much opportunity to think about the plot holes. But of course when the film flies past your eyes at light speed many viewers will forget to ask the important questions. I hope that the Director's Cut DVD will include the missing story.… Expand

Something is really wrong with action-oriented films. Once again, I left the theatre feeling bludgeoned to death and a bit starved for a story. The action, once it started, was eardrum-splitting and constant, while the story itself seemed to be based solely on the girth of the special effects budget. The love story between the transforming government worker and his wife was never believable for a moment. It was dull and listless. Also, the end shot of the fully transformed government worker making metal posies to leave on the doorstep of his wife was positively vomit-inducing. The villainy of the father-in-law also strained the realms of credibility. (Really? Not a shred of conflict working within while you sit next to your daughter and lie like a bureaucrat?) I did buy the moment the one government official gave his approval to the mad scientist to start hacking up the transforming government worker - that rang with great clarity. I only wish the mad scientist had gotten to complete the task. That would have been interesting. Overall, the human relations in this movie were not-so-much one dimensional as they were gaseous. On the other hand, the relationship between the father and son alien scored with me. In fact, if it were not for the child alien, this film would have been unwatchable. I loved the premise. Ideologically there was so much to work with, so much to ponder and explore. Unfortunately, with all those guns going off, who had time to think? (Obviously not the screen writers.) The back-story was far more interesting than the plotted present. They should have filmed the back-story.… Expand

I wanted to love this movie, but in the end was just bored. I could not get over the gaping plot holes, the lazy plot devices (switching back and forth between documentary and film), etc. I could see how someone could buy into the premise; I wanted to love this movie, but in the end was just bored. This movie was not quite what I expected, I liked it but it was definitely not what I expected. The effects were very well done it looked very real and believable.
