Worst Sci-Fi movie I have ever seen!! First time ever I walked out of a movie... From alien rights to alien relocation... Damn liberals ruined what could have been a good thing.

I liked this movie while I watched it, but when I stepped out of the theater, I realized how stupid it is. Cat food being like a drug to the aliens? The fact that the aliens look like shrimp/lobster? Laughable! Let's not forget the fact I liked this movie while I watched it, but when I stepped out of the theater, I realized how stupid it is. Cat food being like a drug to the aliens? The fact that the aliens look like shrimp/lobster? Laughable! Let's not forget the fact that these shrimp ("prawns") communicate with humans easily - us humans know their language! Weird? Yeah. Ok the movie has a "message" but I don't think we needed a movie to tell us that racism/unequality is bad. Expand

Most films like this would get a low rating, but District 9 is different. By that, I mean there is a character who undergoes real change. He starts out as a tool, and by the end of the movie we see he has overcome his internal prejudism. The ending is beautifully subtle, even if it is incomplete. This movie NEEDS a sequel, just like Kill Bill vol. 1 did. Yet, it does stand alone as a perfectly viable work. It's disturbing how many people really didn't get it and, in fact, have a violent reaction to it. Could it be that these people all harbor a prejudism of their own? Expand

The premise and concept are superbly Although this movie hasn't come out in the UK yet as of writing, I managed to find a way to see it (ssshhh) in decent enough quality. Needless to say, this film is definitely worth a cinema visit. The premise and concept are superbly realised and the main character (Wickers/Vickers?) is very likeable. The actor playing him brings a real naivity and bumbling foolery to the guy but he's so sweet and you really feel for him. The aliens are great, with the CGI really doing wonders in most cases. The story is good but a little in-cohesive on account of the 3 act set-up. I think I would have preferred the whole film to be a mockumentary like how it begins. In any case, each of the 3 acts work really well individually. The interaction between the humans and prawns seems fairly realistic and quite original to me. The action is superb and often very cool. It can be gory which I love but then you get body-horror elements which were revolting. I'd like to get more into the backstory and would welcome any spin-offs/sequels/prequels that may come. Go see this film and look out for Neil Blomkamp, the director. He's the next big thing but needs to improve the story-telling and character development issues but he can handle everything else better than most veteran filmmakers. Expand

If you're a SciFi fan you'll be embarrassed if you want anything more intelligent. I hate to agree with Ebert, but this is nothing more than poor space soap opera with emotional manipulation and little care to actually producing anything intelligent. I got the point of the movie. It's been done a million times and much better and without a need for an excuse to focus on apartheid, which didn't even make sense. It makes me realize that movies have deterioriated into such unoriginal trash that throw any new CGI trick in front of them and they'll scream how awesome it is. Expand

Just because his transformation draws inspiration from the fly does not mean it isn't original and powerful. After the I've seen more storyline, character development, action, and suspense with Transformers franchise and Starship Troopers trilogy than with this movie. District 9 combines those two movies in a slapped-together mishmash. After the evictions, it's practically a free'for'all. A lot of the gore was unnecessary, as it could have been implied, not an in-your-face, blood-spattered camera shots. I know it's just a movie, but some of the action, like blowing up a human, the pieces will be cooked, not bloody, scientifically/biologically speaking. The heat and force of the alien weapons would make it so. All in all, it was a slapped together, mishmash with obvious homage to Starship Troopers and very little or none at all morals or ethics which would have made the movie greater in character development. I watched it once, wanted to walk out halway through, but I watched it to the end. Won't do that again. Expand

OK people, you're really getting a bit crazy here. This movie was OK, as a comic-book plot turned into a movie, but it was not, repeat NOT, high-quality sci-fi. There were plot holes you could drive a mother-ship through in this thing, OK people, you're really getting a bit crazy here. This movie was OK, as a comic-book plot turned into a movie, but it was not, repeat NOT, high-quality sci-fi. There were plot holes you could drive a mother-ship through in this thing, from what energy source keeps the ship hovering over Johannesburg for 20 years (and why can't THAT energy be used to launch the ship??) to exactly how likely is it that superpowers like the US, China and Russia would leave little old South Africa alone to handle these aliens, who, oh by the way, might be carrying viruses and/or technology that could wipe out mankind. Sounds logical to me! Anyway, you have to think of the movie as an intelligent comic book plot. It had good cinematics, decent effects, nice acting and a fairly well-executed (if overdone) morale to the story. The development of the main character from a beurocrat who treats the aliens like lower life forms (the egg-burning scene is particularly nasty) to....well, I don't want to give anything away, but let's just say his perspective changes pretty dramatically.... Anyway, its a good movie, better than the Transformers/G.I.Joe junk we've been fed lately, but it's certainly not as good as the next level up (Matrix/Star Wars/Blade Runner), and even those aren't really, really great sci-fi....Here's hoping someone out there has the brains to produce Lord of Light....now THERE's a sci-fi story. The film was not intelligent, insightful, or interesting. The oh-so original message that the pseudo-intellectuals are harping about is the same one we've seen a thousand times: "Humans are more monstrous than the monsters." Are you surprised? Can you wrap your head around that? How about if I repeat myself again... and again? Didn't Peter Jackson already make a movie about this? (King Kong) *Spoiler Alert* Lastly, nothing made sense. Why come to Earth? Why be addicted to cat food? Why be abused by humans if you have crazy-powerful alien weapons and super strength? Why do the humans and aliens understand each others' language? Why not converse in the same language? It takes an alien 20 years to radio the mothership directly overhead to beam him up? Once in the mothership, why fly away? To get help? You could have done that 20 years ago - ya know, instead of landing here and stranding your fellow aliens in a hell-hole. If someone is shooting you - with bullets - from a gun - and you're dying... why not shoot back!? I've saved the best for last: Why does a splash of alien fuel mutate a person into an alien? .Ask yourself that question one more time... then splash yourself with gasoline. These are not "plot holes" these are "plot chasms." They are stupid. The movie is stupid. Before you start with the "no, you're stupid!", let me assure you. I saw the movie. I understood it. It was stupid. No, really, I get it. I got it. Yes, apartheid, yeah, segregation, yeah humanity is evil and the aliens are the good guys. Sure, social commentary, satire, etc. I said "I get it!" That doesn't make it clever or original, and it most certainly does not make it entertaining. Expand

Yeah, It is surprising to me that there are viewers out there who couldn't sit back and really enjoy this movie. Despite all of the repeatedly and dramatically mentioned mistakes listed below this movie was just freaking fun to watch. Yeah, cliches were present, yeah, there was violence and people exploded, yeah there were some plot holes. Did no one else think this movie was just damn entertaining?? And Sharlto Copley is actually South African, so I'm not sure why there are complaints regarding accents..... Overall, I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. I loved that Wikus was a mega-dweeb turned action star. I thought he was believable and I'm hoping I will see him in many more future films. The only reason this movie doesn't get a perfect, is because the ending was slightly anti-climactic. I understand why they ended it the way they did, but inside I know I was hoping for a wee bit more. Definitely worth your theater dollars people! Expand

Strange looking aliens looking like Big Shrimp I reserve a 10 for a perfect movie but this is as close as it gets. This movie grabs you from the start and never lets go. It is a social commentary on everythng that is wrong with the world. Strange looking aliens looking like Big Shrimp are marooned over South Africa. Instead of realizing their superior intelligence and strength they are thrown into a run down compound for twenty years and treated like garbage. It is hard to believe that no one looked out for their interest or tried to find out why they had come here? Instead, it is no different than a NAZI concentration camp. It's obvious although never explained that we understand their language and they ours. They have superior weaponry but never use it against mankind. There is so much more that the audience wants to know but the answers are never revealed. It is not until a supervisor who had disdain for them has his DNA altered that he understands how awful we have been to these visitors to our planet. From there the framework has been set for the visitors to return, After all a promise is a promise. But when they return they may do so with a vengeance. Stay tuned as this is a guarantee for a sequel or two. Just go see it. Expand

Films such as "I-Robot", "The War Of the Worlds" remake, even the 2009 rehash "Star Trek" lacked any social commentary and instead focused on action elements to keep viewers entertained. Now, District 9 has an new tone on science-fiction, an incredible film which is by far one of the best science fiction films in a long time. The plot is filled with commentary on the social climate of the twenty-first century. The aliens in District 9 represent the situation in countries throughout the world in which immigrants are arriving in large numbers fleeing from disaster or war. MNU, the agency which "takes care" of the aliens shows a picture of a government who does not care about the situation and wants to leave it for others to fix. Sharlto Copley is incredible as the film's lead and as he transforms into an alien he loses hope only to find hope in a father and son family of aliens. While the aliens are CGI effects they have personalities where in the film you forget that they are effects, but true characters. The remaining actors are well-done in their roles and the film's final shot is sad, yet at the same time, partially up-lifting. There were faults mostly in regards to the gore effects. While the effects themselves were good, the monotone film print made the effects even more disgusting, which is not a bad thing, yet is not a good thing at the same time, due to large amounts of gore throughout the film. In conclusion, District 9 is truly a well thought masterpiece of cinema and it's conclusion leaves this viewer wondering about a follow-up. Expand

If you want to see the trigger happy military jocks obliterated in blood explosions with the Laser Gun 9000 and a walking mech, this movie is for you.

If you wanted an intelligent look at race relations or a new, more humanistic look at what alien contact might look like, well, you're better off just watching the short film (Alive in Joburg) and stopping there.

As part of the second crowd, I was sorely disappointed to find that this film is essentially the premise of the short, which was well made, if not necessary enlightening, filled in with Hollywood nonsense to the point of incomprehension. The believable and intriguing sets of the original are discarded for the mind-numbing adrenaline fest of another cliche action movie.

But judging by these reviews and the film's $35 million weekend start, I'm in the minority.
