I've gone over this again and again in my head, because I was really upset about the disconnect between my experience at this movie and seemingly every other review I've read about it. I was really hyped up for this flick, because I've gone over this again and again in my head, because I was really upset about the disconnect between my experience at this movie and seemingly every other review I've read about it. I was really hyped up for this flick, because it felt like it was being made by really creative, really intellectual people who were going to present an allegory in a really new and fresh way. All the promotional material was top-notch, and I spent hours at the website exploring and learning about the premise and the back-story, and just kind of absorbing the whole thing. I showed up at the theatre expecting to be genuinely challenged mentally and maybe even morally, and instead, it was just a popcorn flick. If my expectations hadn't been jacked up so high, I probably could've enjoyed the movie, but it just wasn't what I was hoping for. District 9 was our last chance to rescue 2009 from a summer that included Transformers 2, G.I. Joe, and literally the most boring Harry Potter movie I've ever sat through, which is saying something. Instead, the characters were one-dimensional; the plot ended with the premise, and the ending was a WTF? moment for the ages. The violence wound up being pretty good, but in my head, I was screaming at the good guys, "WHY AREN'T YOU KILLING THEM!?" and at the bad guys, "WHY AREN'T YOU RUNNING AWAY?!" The special effects and the general presentation were superbly done and visually stunning, but unfortunately, that's where the creativity stopped. Also, I think that if you lived through the 80's, you pretty much got the Apartheid metaphor directly from the trailers. You can almost go into the movie and take it as given. Instead, you sit there and get hammered over the head with it for an hour and a half. It just made me cringe after awhile. And at the same time, it's the elephant in the room. At a certain point, I was waiting for someone, anyone to stand up and say, "Hey! Remember that one time in South Africa when we used to pretend like blacks weren't real people? This is JUST LIKE THAT. 'Cept with aliens." I guess I just found the whole thing insulting, intellectually, which is the exact opposite of what I was expecting, which is why I was so disappointed. And I'm even more disappointed with moviegoers for not calling the moviemakers out on it. Instead, everybody's fawning all over it, hailing it as unique and original and smart, of all things. It just makes me sad. Expand

It's a standard anti-hero/redemption adventure story. (and occasionally funny if you have a certain sense of humor... I certainly laughed out loud) BUT, it is done extremely well. It is stylistically unique, and the sci-fi is solid. It far exceeds expectations of typical Holloywood sci-fi adventure and should rightfully take it's place in the top five or ten of all time. I'd guess that if one really doesn't like the film, one probably isn't a fan of the genre, is creeped out by icky visuals, or simply can't relate to the South African cast & location or the refugee/concentration camp setting. The main character, even with his actions late in the movie, really has no redeeming qualities. He acts selfish, he curses excessively and, in short, is just difficult to feel bad for. Except for the final ten minutes or so he treats the prawns awfully, even when he is becoming one of them. Other things, like how he is able to use a robotic weapon not only in general but totally accurately with only one alien hand is dubious. Conversely, the prawns are certainly easy to sympathize with and it is too bad Christopher wasn't given more of a central role. The inconsistency of the aliens' abilities, or lack thereof, was frustrating. The only character that was not a cardboard cut-out was the lead, and even he was border-line unsympathetic because he was such an obvious moron. The main mercenary was somehow unkillable, and therefore highly distracting as the film went to such pains to paint a "real" picture. And I agree that the film is not very original. Throughout D9 I could not stop thinking about how much better Cronenberg's The Fly and Spielberg's E.T. are, as narratives and cinema. Ultimately, this is another film, in an unfortunately growing number of films, that is not cinema, but rather feature length CGI exercise. The coolest thing about the movie was the spaceship looming over the city. Expand

Under apartheid, the native population of South Africa was guilty of only one thing, being black. On that basis alone, babies were born into a limited world without civil rights and shanty town life with their ill-fated parents. Having Under apartheid, the native population of South Africa was guilty of only one thing, being black. On that basis alone, babies were born into a limited world without civil rights and shanty town life with their ill-fated parents. Having committed no crime, such institutionalized disenfranchisement, without a doubt, was an injustice, which inspired Jerry Dammers of The Specials to give up ska and write the consciousness-raising anthem "Free Nelson Mandela". Do the oppressed aliens in "District 9" deserve their own anthem too? With a little more exposition, their sudden appearance in the Johannesburg sky would have made the allegory about racial segregation resonate with less opaqueness. The film never truly establishes the extra-terrestrials as affable inter-planetary travelers. When the moviegoer first meets them, they're not friendly, or hostile; they're sick. Instead of a cure for cancer, these aliens brought along an artillery of deadly weapons. (You know they're deadly when people cheer the blood.) The humans in Robert Wise's "The Day the Earth Stood Still" act with prejudice and can't see that Klaatu is making a peace offering. By contrast, the more we witness the awesome firepower that alien technology has to offer, the less these visitors seem like victims of pure, unadulterated hatred, so the allegorical evocations of apartheid fall apart, since their perceived innocence is up for interpretation. What if the aliens reached Earth, but called off the invasion due to illness. Due to sloppy writing, that scenario is a definite possibility. The government might have been right to incarcerate the aliens, but went too far when they tortured and conducted medical experiments on their bodies. "District 9" admirably blends spinach with your popcorn, but the Johannesberg setting is problematic. The spaceship should have hovered above Berlin, or Washington D.C. Expand

Simply incredible. Smart, tense, engaging, compelling, and believable. A plausible science fiction film, can you believe it? Lets you know right away that cinematic rules will be broken, but never resorts to simple squalor. See this film, right now.

There is nothing particularly wrong with it, but it fails to achieve what true Science Fiction aims to do; offer up a context for discussing a current issue with all the emotional baggage removed through fantastic characters and setting. While I get the aesthetic (which was well done, convincing and wonderfully cohesive), it still made me a little sick to my stomach. Some of the final plot "twists" if you can call them that, are a little obvious and seem out of place. However, the general concept of an alien refugee camp is genius, and in many respects the CG is some of the best I've ever seen simply because the focus remains the story and never the effect. Expand

Parable or not, it was only for my friends being with me that I did not walk out of it. I'm actually kind of glad I did not because it gained its two point rating at the end when something actually happened. Aliens getting stranded on earth is a pretty lame premise for a movie in the first place and, even though the special effects were great and the CGI truly impressive, it could not overcome that "Haven't we seen this all before?" feeling. And that feeling is hard to accept for over two and a half hours at a time. Expand

Furthermore, having Jackson's backing makes it that much better. But, I do have to feel like some of the overly-joyous press is a titch too strong. The film is at worst, a bit too long, and seems to struggle at keeping the story rolling at certain points.
