This film is a delight to the eyes and ears. Incredibly stylish, beautiful, sexy. Emma Stone plays amazingly as always, and her every new image is imprinted in her head. The only thing that upset me was that little time was spent on some minor characters, like Artie. Charismatic dude, and the time on the screen is a couple of minutes.
I don’t think you should have expected any deep story from Disney, they haven’t done anything like that for a long time. If you understand this, you will love this movie. Sex, style, rock and roll that's what this movie is about.

The movie has fantastic editing and dialogue. The main antagonist was menacing and well written. Two issues I had with the movie was the frequent use of licensed songs and the CGI. Most of the music in the scenes felt out of place and the CGI was not Aladdin levels of bad, more 2007 era movies. Most of the movie used practical effects so that felt nice. Watch this movie for the characters and enjoy. Expand

Good cast. Good acting. Good script. Not perfect but one of Disney’s best live action films. Emma stone was amazing in the film. So I’ll say it’s an 8/10 and one thumbs up.

Better than I thought it would be. Arguably Disney's best prequel/live action re-make. An entertaining ride, led by Stone that is also enhanced by it's design and soundtrack.

The movie is not at Disney's level at all. You can't compare it to Disney movies (there are no official songs for the movie except for one. That's weird???)

The graphics are not Disney's level. The costumes are not Disney's level.

But the movie is very fun. Keeps you entertained all the time
In fact, I do not know why the rating is low? Is Emma Stone the main actress?
She portrayed the role in a different way, but very beautiful. (I wish the actress was from UK so that the accent would be appropriate)

The movie is Great and a must watch.

After being dragged to the theater though, I can say with certainty it is the most entertaining and fun movie I’ve seen in a long while. Some people are mad, that Disney would try to justify a villain as horrible as cruella, but I can assure you it doesn’t. It ends up just being an amazingly well acted and entertaining film, with a soundtrack comparable to that of the gaurdians of the galaxy movies. Definitely worth a watch. Expand

This isThis origin story of the 101 Dalmatians villain stars Emma Stone as the aspiring designer who finds herself in 70s London. It’s not long before her life is changed when she discovers an esteemed, arrogant fashion icon (Emma Thompson). This is Emma vs. Emma and the elder wins. While Stone does a good job, it’s Thompson who’s so beautifully wicked, haughty and dismissive of everyone but herself. The other primary aspect of this version is the world of fashion. The wildly inventive, over-the-top beauty of the clothes provides constant visual stimulus. As the funniest thing in the movie, Paul Walter Hauser once again demonstrates his incredible range. Overall, this is more unruly, punk, grown up and even gay-friendly than most Disney releases. Even at 2+ hours, the pacing never lags and the story manages to keep interest, although some of the songs in the raucous soundtrack seemed out of place. Much of the film’s success is due to the continually-attractive visuals and Thompson’s deliciously nasty performance. NOTE: Stay thru the early credits for one last moment. Expand

Manages to work despite it making Cruella likable and gives her a good reason not to like Dalmatians. Since the heist scenes, performances and music choices are all perfect. The direction is fine as well.
Except Cruella in this doesn’t want to kill animals and wear them. So what is the point of her name even being Cruella Devil ?
It’s like what Disney did to Maleficent who was a nice fairy until her wings were cut off. There was no sign of the evil villain from Sleeping Beauty. Here, there’s no sign of the evil villain from One Hundred and One Dalmatians either.
Since spoiler, she even eventually owns Dalmatians. The film does give her a good reason not to like them but this version of Cruella acts like she would never kill a dog. Despite that this is a fun and entertaining movie that really had no point in being made. Since like Maleficent it makes an evil villain good. It’s like if Disney makes a prequel movie about Palpatine from Star Wars except he is never actually evil or the bad guy.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In Cruella there are memorable scenes where Cruella puts on a show for the public to take the attention from The Baroness and draw the press and public to her .

The blend of the soundtrack along with the beautiful clothing made this movie really shine . It is very clear they put in a lot of effort in clothing Cruella herself and even the other characters such as The Baroness .

Emma Stone did a wonderful job portraying Estella and Cruella . She came off as awkward and meek as Estella . She was cruel , brash and rash as Cruella .

Emma Thompson easily takes the cake for best acting as the villan in this film .

She consistently was able to pull off her nasty and rude attitude as The Baroness .

Emma Thompson was neither underwhelming or overwhelming in her portrayal for The Baroness .

She felt threatening and didn't feel as corny as most villans .

The actors portraying Horace and Jaspar brought out the more grounded moments . But the story only shows them to be thieves and nothing much else is shown about them .

However the transition from Estella to becoming Cruella was somewhat disappointing .

It was so sudden , the development was too quick for it to be enjoyed .

Estella in her anger of discovering the Baroness killed her not original "mom," becomes Cruella by changing her looks and the way she acts too fast . The build up was somewhat lacking .

It felt rushed and it betrayed the character development for Cruella .

The thievery was fun to watch . There are multiple scenes where the gang of thieves including Estella/Cruella , Horace and Jasper utilize their skills for stealing . Pets are also adorably used as well in the act . The movie really shines in the last half of the film . The plot starts to thicken and as the intensity it builds up to the final moment of reveal on who is the worst person out of Estella/Cruella and her mother in the showdown between them .

Though , they did apparently alter the original Cruella's attitude . Originally Cruella was known to make coats out of Dalmatians but in this film she doesn't . So there are changes to Cruella herself and that could possibly disappoint future audiences .

If your willing to take the time and just enjoy the film , this film is a great film in its own ways .

And as usual in this argument I backed it up saying it was fun for what it was and let’s face it I’m a sucker for style over substance when it comes to these big budget Disney films. Now after seeing Cruella, I can see his viewpoint now 100 percent.
I get this is a reimagining, but this is not Cruella. It may say Cruella but it’s not. She might have the black and white hair and drive the De Vil Car and have the two henchman, but never did I feel like it was the same iconic classic Disney villain who cemented Glen Close as an icon or the original Disney animated flick where she literally wanted a coat out of puppies. However, for what we got I still enjoyed immensely even dare say love at times?
I feel like somebody really wanted to make their own fashion movie set in this era of the 70s at the height of the music scene of that time and being that Disney had the money for funding they had it rewritten so that the heroine was Cruella. Emma stone as always shines giving life into the persona of Estella/Cruella that breathes new life into this character ; simply put you root for her to succeed in this busy thriving fashion industry. Emma Thompson as the Baroness steals the film playing a wicked delicious evil boss lady that would make anybody wanna run at just the sight of her heels. Major props for Artie their first openly gay character who actually contributes to the plot and even helps out Cruella in her outfits. Speaking of outfits, the costumes look incredible major props to the costume designer because she went all out, especially the garbage truck dress had me my jaw dropped. Also, kudos to the director Craig Gillespie who made some fabulous choices with the camera movement. London has never looked better and for a film set in the punk rock of the 70’s it looked stunning no pun intended.
So, Cruella you’re a mixed one darling , on one hand you did everything right but then I don’t like you at the same time. Also, Disney that end credits scene just no ! the whole dog matchmaking thing just leaves a sour taste.

It will only bring you even the slightest ability to enjoy the story of revenge and the birth of one of the most famous Disney villains "Cruella de Vil" led by Oscar winner Emma Stone. The costumes of the Two-time Oscar winner Jenny Beavan (perhaps on her way to third) starring in the movie next to Stone, The Devil Wears Prada oozes most of the scenes and a more frail and shallow portrait of Miranda Presley, delivered by Oscar winner Emma Thompson with the kind of finesse usual from her role-playing, with Beautiful music from twice Oscar-nominated composer Nicholas Brittel.
Some events move without logic and some without purpose, but who cares? In the presence of the dominant Emma Stone, Stone is perfect for the lead role.
A mix between Joker and The Devil Wears Prada, with a main character more receptive than the first movie and less valuable than the second movie.

CraigHaving not bought a ticket to a non-MCU Disney film since my childhood, I was incredibly impressed by Cruella. Emma Stone provides one of the greatest performances of her career, supported strongly by a powerful supporting cast. Craig Gillespie directs a film that kept my attention all throughout, with beautiful cinematography and a loud, dynamic soundtrack. Putting its predecessors in the Dalmations franchise to shame - Cruella is a fantastic film for those who are a fan of Stone or Disney lore. The film does stray away from many conventional Disney tropes, however, and I could see that upsetting some critics. Cruella wears some of its cinematic influences on its sleeve (I'm looking at you, Joker (2019)...), but it presents an almost poetic story amidst a beautiful backdrop; giving viewers one of the greater film experiences of the year. I actually enjoyed watching it, but it feels like a tremendous missed opportunity. The cast is perfect. This may be the role Emma Stone was born to play. The wardrobes are gorgeous. It feels like they filmed a run of the mill Disney live action adaptation, but discovered it was so boring that they shelled out for the most expensive licensed soundtrack ever and tried to shoehorn the movie into basically being a 2 hour long music video, which conceptually would have been terrific, but because the movie wasn't shot to the beat of the music, nothing goes together quite right.
Good on them for coming up with a story that didn't feel too pandering. Props to the CGI team. The computer generated animals and sets did not take me out of the moment. This could have been a movie that I re-watch over and over, but instead, all it achieves is a barely passing grade. I give it a C, if you've already seen the best, but you insist on watching a movie, try this one out.

Cruella is NOT a prequel or a prelude to 101 Dalmatians. It is 100% a reboot/reimagining/retelling of the origins of the series as a whole starting with the origins of the character Cruella. But certain implications at the end of the movie make people believe this is setting up things that will happen in 101 Dalmations, but that's not the case. For one, that could never happen because this movie takes place in 1970, at the done of punk rock, where as the original 101 Dalmatians is set in 1958. Secondly, the origins of the dogs implies (Spoiler alert) that Cruella is the whole reason that Anita and Roger get their pups and they eventually meet each other.

Overall, it's a decent film, but I'd fail to call it of average quality, more so below that metric. The pop score got annoying and at times even took me out of the time period of 1970's with songs like "Should I stay or should I go?" The costume designs are fantastic, but is probably the best thing about this movie. The comedy can land at times, but more so after the second half of the film starts I was just kind of bored. The length of this film is over 2 hours... I should not have to say this, but I do. It is very slow. Their are things you could've cut out in this movie or redone to speed it up and the movie would not suffer for it.

It's a little mediocre honestly, but there are enough elements of this film that make it worth one watch if you're really feeling up to it.

I didn't necessarily love it - part of it seemed much too mature for kids, while other parts seemed much too childish or slow for adults. They probably could've released it sooner than they did just on streaming and seen similar success. The costumes are fabulous though and you cannot go wrong with this cast (the Emmas are riveting as always). It is a little too long, and the soundtrack is aggressive at times, but overall, there are worse films and ways to spend time. The costume designer also deserves all $200 million of this budget just for themselves! Just wow. Expand

I agree with the mixed rating.

For starter the movie is a little misleading: It is just a Revenge-Heist story set in the fashion world.
There are very few insight on Cruella persona and her background is just hinted. Also connections to 101 Dalmatian cartoon are few & streched out.

We have good actors but inserted in a confused script... the story revolves around silly plot devices (I can't elaborate to avoid spoilers), inconsistency, predictable sequences and unnecessary cgi

Main problem is charaterization of lead character.
She seems written with the intention of coax the viever into liking her (young girl, Harley-qeenesque look, break of the third wall, cool rebellous nature, sad story) but in the end manage to be annoying instead. Here we have anoter "villain" ...Cruella....that shamefully isn't a real bad guy (with her motivation) but a rebel that is forced to behave in a mischievous way because the world is unfair. And that is extremely irritating.
A fictional Character can be interesting even if it is a villain you know...without the need of water it down to please the gods of political correctness

Disney has done it again.
In its constant eagerness to remake its animated characters in live-action, now it was Cruella de Vil's turn, and she received the same treatment Maleficent received.
The villain turned anti-hero.

Yet once again the same question arises: Why?
And sure, the complete and total answer would be money, but Disney seems more focused on giving cool characters to the new generations, while omitting their past in the animated classics.

And I guess it's fair, not much of the public has seen or will see those films, even kids, therefore a story like this, designed to be visually impressive, becomes quite attractive for the general audiences.

And Cruella is all about making a visual impact, and I know how to appreciate good work in terms of costumes, sets, music and production, but I also pay a lot attention to the script, and Cruella is more about style than substance, and that creates a gap that nothing else in it can fill, and it's hugely unsatisfying.

Emma Stone and Emma Thompson are the attractive force in acting terms, battling to see who's the biggest **** but the appeal becomes tedious after a while, much like the montage in which Cruella crashes several events of the Baroness played by Thompson.

We understand it, she's kinda punk, aggressive and audacious, they didn't have to sell it in such a persistent and repetitive way, especially considering that these scenes are only made to show off the costume work, not because it adds anything to the story.
The rest of the cast is criminally wasted, especially Mark Strong who's only there for one important scene.

Cruella is more of an audiovisual show, than a true tale.
Yes, there's an origin story there, of course, but this ultimately says nothing at all.

Do you want to meet the real Cruella de Vil, the actual villain? Watch 101 Dalmatians.

Disney Live Action remakes have never been my thing as you all know but there was something just very entertaining about this one. Whether it was ironic or unironic enjoyment, I enjoyed it just the same. The film does have a lot that is good about it particularly Emma Stone’s performance. While it’s far from her best, she still did a good job. The film rides on her performance and she did a great job capturing the essence of Cruella. However, there is an issue with sympathy. Most of us know that Cruella goes on to try and skin dogs and the film does try and make us empathize with here. While it isn’t a big issue, it’s a little awkward at points. If this was a new character, then this issue wouldn’t be there. Paul Walter Hauser brought a nice sense of levity to the film and his comedic timing and the jokes I made I found to be pretty hilarious compared to everyone else. Most of the other humor feel really flat for me. All of the other performances are fine. Emma Thompson’s performance felt pretty flat in a lot of areas especially where she is supposed to react. The script has a ton of issues with plot holes especially toward the end along with some pretty awkward dialogue. There were some laugh out loud moments in the film that I don’t think intended to be like that at all. I noticed that there were a lot of similarities to Joker (2019) in here which took me off guard in relation to mental illness and even down to a song choice from the trailer of Joker. At that point, it felt very on the nose about its other source of inspiration. The soundtrack was good but there were points where I wished that they hadn’t used music and the cinematography was pretty nice at points but bland overall. Some of the CGI was really bad at times but fine for the most part and I really enjoyed the costume design. The costume design is the one aspect this film can pride itself in. This films begs the question, “Was it necessary”. The answer? Not really but it was fun anyway. If you want a good Emma Stone performance or enjoy these remakes then you’ll probably like this but if you don’t like these remakes then pass on this. Expand

(Mauro Lanari)
"For some time now the new heroes are actually the villains of the past who make their psychoanalytic motivations felt on the big screen. Let's think of Joker, Venom, Maleficent". Cruella De Vil is a girl with a double personality, a character worthy of Stevenson or De Palma called to guarantee us that the genealogy of evil and of its culture implies an inner dissociation or an unresolved ambivalence. Objections that belittle the alleged subversive significance of this Disney product:
1a) the hypothesis is desirable but not yet demonstrated by anyone in the history of the cosmos, the film does not apply it to the antagonist Baroness von Hellman and in any case traumas cannot be reduced and traced to a "Freud For Dummies";
1b) once the spin-off sequel saga is over, will they start another one about the Baroness's bipolarity against a one-dimensional villain in a "regressus ad infinitum"?
2) considering disruptive also some musicians included in the soundtrack (Bee Gees, ELO, etc.) or it is an excess of zeal or pure bad faith;
3) moreover, we start very badly if we adopt the Dalmatian dichotomy of black and white as a symbolism of good and evil. Not so much out of respect for political correctness and Black Lives Matter, but because already in 1773 Goethe wrote "Wo viel Licht ist, ist starker Schatten" ("There is strong shadow where there is much light").

"Cruella" bounces back and forth between goofy heist moments and "serious" moments so frequently and jarringly that ultimately all of the moments come across as comedic. Is this movie for kids? The creators of the movie don't even know. CGI is inexplicably used for some dogs in the movie (but not others?). I will admit that the costumes were well done. If only more focus was given to the script. Most charcters are archetypes defined by one personality trait, character motivations are weak at best, the dialogue is by-the-numbers, and the only surprising moments in the story either undermine the rest of the story or just feel completely unbelievable. There is a plot twist I will not spoil that is eye-rolling to say the least. All these faults would be more tolerable if the movie was not so darn long. The story of this movie did not need 2 hours to tell. And the majority of those 2 hours is saturated with unnecessary voice over (often explaining what is already obvious visually) and pop music. I liked the soundtrack but the movie relied on it too heavily and did not usually integrate it with the visuals effectively. I can't really recommend this movie to anybody. Emma Stone tried her best to salvage this disaster but was cringe-worthy to be honest. Expand

The 'big surprise' is something you will already have figured out much earlier in the film.
It takes swipes at the evil male patriarchy while ignoring that the whole movie is about an evil white matriarchy.
Some expected race swapping of characters. Trite music selections from the period.
Oh, and Pongo and Perdita are now brother and sister.
Nothing like a little incest fun from Disney.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Very underwhelming feature. If the plot manages to gather many interesting pieces of stories and clues for its future development it all still remains stereotypical, effortless and terribly reductive.

Disney here missed a huge opportunity to create a passionate and exciting background for one of his most misunderstood and unidimensional villains. In the end the unidimensional taste remains powerful. Despite many major (and quite unpredictable) turns of events the movies loses itself in its own narrative and we end up with a black and white Harley Quinn-esque character. The other charcters are just bland: from the naughty (step)mother archetype to the underling who changes sides when the wind starts to change and passing by the traditional tasteless friends of trouble combined with some sparks of magic and misunderstandings.

The pace is jerky, the soundtrack consisting in reprises of major rock hits is terrific, the atmosphere is a success and the stagings are original. The problems come from all what remains: acting, writing, ending, scenario especially.

Too much hype for nothing. I've been hyped for this since it was announced and I'm very disappointed. Better save your time and money.

The movie tries too hard (clearly with awards in mind), the plot is awful and boring. Sadly the movie is supposed to be about Cruella but could be about any other character who wants to be a fashion designer with no cares for the law, the writers apparently don't know much about the title character. I think the good reviews are not objective thanks to the good cast.

The only good thing worth noting apart from the good cast is the stunning costume design.

I have to add I wouldn't recommend this movie for kids because in the end it sends kids the wrong message.

Cruella is someone who tries to SKIN DOGS for christ sake WHY are we trying to make a sympathetic anti hero out of this character!?

Another trash fire of writing hiding under a crap ton of money thrown at the screen. People that don't think about what they watch will probably love it for the visuals. Everyone else well.... maybe you can laugh at it if you ignore the stupidity.

so many unanswered questions, biggest one was what was the reason she skins puppies? Even if the reason was the dogs, it seems so forced and petty, and this movie is a joker wannabe movie that this became a typical hero movie. Complete trash. I have no idea what Disney tried to achieve with this one. The only people who might like it are the ones who never watched the movie it's derived from.
