Disney should take the risk of giving creative freedom to its directors, Cruella needed a creative touch intended for adults and not only for children.

The movie is shallow and relies entirely on the visual. It's “The Devil Wears Prada” for kids.

Emma Stone and Emma Thompson are the best part of the movie, but 'The Devil Wears Prada' vibes make their interaction a little derivative. Can Disney not make a film thinking of converting it into a franchise? Expand

Disney has done it again.
In its constant eagerness to remake its animated characters in live-action, now it was Cruella de Vil's turn, and she received the same treatment Maleficent received.
The villain turned anti-hero.

Yet once again the same question arises: Why?
And sure, the complete and total answer would be money, but Disney seems more focused on giving cool characters to the new generations, while omitting their past in the animated classics.

And I guess it's fair, not much of the public has seen or will see those films, even kids, therefore a story like this, designed to be visually impressive, becomes quite attractive for the general audiences.

And Cruella is all about making a visual impact, and I know how to appreciate good work in terms of costumes, sets, music and production, but I also pay a lot attention to the script, and Cruella is more about style than substance, and that creates a gap that nothing else in it can fill, and it's hugely unsatisfying.

Emma Stone and Emma Thompson are the attractive force in acting terms, battling to see who's the biggest **** but the appeal becomes tedious after a while, much like the montage in which Cruella crashes several events of the Baroness played by Thompson.

We understand it, she's kinda punk, aggressive and audacious, they didn't have to sell it in such a persistent and repetitive way, especially considering that these scenes are only made to show off the costume work, not because it adds anything to the story.
The rest of the cast is criminally wasted, especially Mark Strong who's only there for one important scene.

Cruella is more of an audiovisual show, than a true tale.
Yes, there's an origin story there, of course, but this ultimately says nothing at all.

Do you want to meet the real Cruella de Vil, the actual villain? Watch 101 Dalmatians.

Not worth making a new franchise. Please don’t ruin this character anymore Expand

Cruella is NOT a prequel or a prelude to 101 Dalmatians. It is 100% a reboot/reimagining/retelling of the origins of the series as a whole starting with the origins of the character Cruella. But certain implications at the end of the movie make people believe this is setting up things that will happen in 101 Dalmations, but that's not the case. For one, that could never happen because this movie takes place in 1970, at the done of punk rock, where as the original 101 Dalmatians is set in 1958. Secondly, the origins of the dogs implies (Spoiler alert) that Cruella is the whole reason that Anita and Roger get their pups and they eventually meet each other.

Overall, it's a decent film, but I'd fail to call it of average quality, more so below that metric. The pop score got annoying and at times even took me out of the time period of 1970's with songs like "Should I stay or should I go?" The costume designs are fantastic, but is probably the best thing about this movie. The comedy can land at times, but more so after the second half of the film starts I was just kind of bored. The length of this film is over 2 hours... I should not have to say this, but I do. It is very slow. Their are things you could've cut out in this movie or redone to speed it up and the movie would not suffer for it.

It's a little mediocre honestly, but there are enough elements of this film that make it worth one watch if you're really feeling up to it.

I didn't necessarily love it - part of it seemed much too mature for kids, while other parts seemed much too childish or slow for adults. They probably could've released it sooner than they did just on streaming and seen similar success. The costumes are fabulous though and you cannot go wrong with this cast (the Emmas are riveting as always). It is a little too long, and the soundtrack is aggressive at times, but overall, there are worse films and ways to spend time. The costume designer also deserves all $200 million of this budget just for themselves! Just wow. Expand

I actually enjoyed watching it, but it feels like a tremendous missed opportunity. The cast is perfect. This may be the role Emma Stone was born to play. The wardrobes are gorgeous. It feels like they filmed a run of the mill Disney live action adaptation, but discovered it was so boring that they shelled out for the most expensive licensed soundtrack ever and tried to shoehorn the movie into basically being a 2 hour long music video, which conceptually would have been terrific, but because the movie wasn't shot to the beat of the music, nothing goes together quite right.
Good on them for coming up with a story that didn't feel too pandering. Props to the CGI team. The computer generated animals and sets did not take me out of the moment. This could have been a movie that I re-watch over and over, but instead, all it achieves is a barely passing grade. I give it a C, if you've already seen the best, but you insist on watching a movie, try this one out.

A personal drama within the background of the fashion industry is what I am here for. Nonetheless, it was an enjoyable film that added to the layers of Cruella's character. Expand

I agree with the mixed rating.

For starter the movie is a little misleading: It is just a Revenge-Heist story set in the fashion world.
There are very few insight on Cruella persona and her background is just hinted. Also connections to 101 Dalmatian cartoon are few & streched out.

We have good actors but inserted in a confused script... the story revolves around silly plot devices (I can't elaborate to avoid spoilers), inconsistency, predictable sequences and unnecessary cgi

Main problem is charaterization of lead character.
She seems written with the intention of coax the viever into liking her (young girl, Harley-qeenesque look, break of the third wall, cool rebellous nature, sad story) but in the end manage to be annoying instead. Here we have anoter "villain" ...Cruella....that shamefully isn't a real bad guy (with her motivation) but a rebel that is forced to behave in a mischievous way because the world is unfair. And that is extremely irritating.
A fictional Character can be interesting even if it is a villain you know...without the need of water it down to please the gods of political correctness

Disney Live Action remakes have never been my thing as you all know but there was something just very entertaining about this one. Whether it was ironic or unironic enjoyment, I enjoyed it just the same. The film does have a lot that is good about it particularly Emma Stone’s performance. While it’s far from her best, she still did a good job. The film rides on her performance and she did a great job capturing the essence of Cruella. However, there is an issue with sympathy. Most of us know that Cruella goes on to try and skin dogs and the film does try and make us empathize with here. While it isn’t a big issue, it’s a little awkward at points. If this was a new character, then this issue wouldn’t be there. Paul Walter Hauser brought a nice sense of levity to the film and his comedic timing and the jokes I made I found to be pretty hilarious compared to everyone else. Most of the other humor feel really flat for me. All of the other performances are fine. Emma Thompson’s performance felt pretty flat in a lot of areas especially where she is supposed to react. The script has a ton of issues with plot holes especially toward the end along with some pretty awkward dialogue. There were some laugh out loud moments in the film that I don’t think intended to be like that at all. I noticed that there were a lot of similarities to Joker (2019) in here which took me off guard in relation to mental illness and even down to a song choice from the trailer of Joker. At that point, it felt very on the nose about its other source of inspiration. The soundtrack was good but there were points where I wished that they hadn’t used music and the cinematography was pretty nice at points but bland overall. Some of the CGI was really bad at times but fine for the most part and I really enjoyed the costume design. The costume design is the one aspect this film can pride itself in. This films begs the question, “Was it necessary”. The answer? Not really but it was fun anyway. If you want a good Emma Stone performance or enjoy these remakes then you’ll probably like this but if you don’t like these remakes then pass on this. Expand

(Mauro Lanari)
"For some time now the new heroes are actually the villains of the past who make their psychoanalytic motivations felt on the big screen. Let's think of Joker, Venom, Maleficent". Cruella De Vil is a girl with a double personality, a character worthy of Stevenson or De Palma called to guarantee us that the genealogy of evil and of its culture implies an inner dissociation or an unresolved ambivalence. Objections that belittle the alleged subversive significance of this Disney product:
1a) the hypothesis is desirable but not yet demonstrated by anyone in the history of the cosmos, the film does not apply it to the antagonist Baroness von Hellman and in any case traumas cannot be reduced and traced to a "Freud For Dummies";
1b) once the spin-off sequel saga is over, will they start another one about the Baroness's bipolarity against a one-dimensional villain in a "regressus ad infinitum"?
2) considering disruptive also some musicians included in the soundtrack (Bee Gees, ELO, etc.) or it is an excess of zeal or pure bad faith;
3) moreover, we start very badly if we adopt the Dalmatian dichotomy of black and white as a symbolism of good and evil. Not so much out of respect for political correctness and Black Lives Matter, but because already in 1773 Goethe wrote "Wo viel Licht ist, ist starker Schatten" ("There is strong shadow where there is much light").
