Truly genius movie. There is nothing like it ever made. I recommend it if you are a fan of weird cinema and art in general. At first glance, disturbing, but in reality quite a poetic movie. All performances are amazing and the settings and cinematography is a masterclass. My only complain is that this movie was too short. It needed another hour or so. But I feel like Cronenberg and his editing staff did this on purpose to make us crave for more. At the end, you feel an incompleteness, a longing. Because the world of this film was so enthralling. 10 out of 10. Expand

Cronenberg is back, BABY! It's a film that will likely leave most people disgusted and/or bored, but it is a fascinating and original feast. I saw two groups walk out of the theater, which kinda makes me like this movie even more. If I had toCronenberg is back, BABY! I saw two groups walk out of the theater, which kinda makes me like this movie even more. If I had to critique it, I'd say it runs a bit too long, and could use mandatory subtitles. (It might have been the sound mix at the movie theater, but the dialogue was very hard to hear and the ambient noise was loud AF) I'm actually excited to watch it again. The practical special effects are super fun. The acting is great. Watch something different for once in your miserable lives. Expand

I was in shock after this ended. All I could do was sit there and watch the credits roll. When I finally walked out, the usher said “Wow, you survived,” because multiple people walked out early. “Survived” is a very appropriate word for this,I was in shock after this ended. I get the strong sensation that Cronenberg is disillusioned with modern film and wanted to make his own attempt at progressing the art medium forward. With all of the discussion of corpses, body parts, and conflating art with mutilation, the message comes across clearly. The “Crimes of the Future” the title refers to are committed by the people in Cronenberg’s dystopia who embrace the evolution of art and mutating human anatomy. Police, bureaucrats, and conservatives are the enemy here, they prevent change at all costs because of fear. Whereas the ones willing to test the limits of art, consumers, and the human body are the trailblazers. There is no clear good or evil, only a hopeful destination that lies ahead, as the abrupt ending suggests. Expand

First truly original film in what, a decade? Ignore the awful trailer, this is the real deal. A dream-like future world fully realized with its own internal logic, that also comments on our own. Beautiful, haunting and memorable.

This movie left me speechless. It was extremely gory and gruesome (which doesn't bother me) and the scenes were beautifully shot. It is unlike anything I've ever seen before. Why do you like movies? If you enjoy concepts, design, art, technology and all the implications that our current systems are colliding then this movie is for you! Once again Cronenberg does an amazing job of showing the underbelly (andWhy do you like movies? If you enjoy concepts, design, art, technology and all the implications that our current systems are colliding then this movie is for you! Once again Cronenberg does an amazing job of showing the underbelly (and insides of the underbelly) of our society and a potential dystopian future of our great-great-grandchildren. A-list acting as Mortensen, Stewart, and Seydoux shine. Sets, concepts, Production, Filming and Body Horror (not as much body horror as Fly, Videodrome) are Cronenberg in full swing.

If you judge a movie by whether it zips everything up in a nice body of flesh at by the end then I would just say be prepared to not receive this. However, if you can prime yourself for a mystery and true joy of a film to behold and spend the time to delve further yourself into the concepts and questions that this movie poses then you're in for a real treat.

In 'Crimes of the Future,' body horror legend David Cronenberg presents us with a futurist manifesto in which he devises an era free of pain and the "natural" order. His first new film in almost a decade lures us with the promise of a body horror nightmare; instead, what we get is a meditation on how the art of body modification could be the ultimate weapon against those who try to keep the status quo whatever the cost. There's no crime like the present, and this strange but original film reminds us of that. Expand

Back in black, Cronenberg returns to organic terror after many years; with elements that refer to Frankenstein and the mythical Golem. His followers will not be disappointed, although it is preferable to see it on an empty stomach.

TL;DR - I have been a fan of Cronenberg since I watched and experienced 'The Fly' 1986 as a kiddo nearly 15 years ago, and to this day consider it one of my favorite Romance/sci-fi stories of all time.

TL;DR - I have been a fan of Cronenberg since I watched and experienced 'The Fly' 1986 as a kiddo nearly 15 years ago, and to this day consider it one of my favorite Romance/sci-fi stories of all time.

All his movies that I watched always had more than just the body horror he is so famously known for, the same is present here but is missing the right blending technique of a good story that I feel he excelled at.

Crimes of the Future (COF) does have more than just the body horror but feels similar to when you try doing an activity after a long break, the muscle memory is there but you are still not quite there.

COF feels like David returning but not fully back yet, and just the hope of seeing him make something iconic once again before his inevitable retirement is what I hold onto, the man is 79 FFS.

COF is an experience not so much a movie, as it lacks a lot of the usual movie markers that our brain is so used to, this is also the reason that it does not quite reach the excellence of his previous works.

The Good

The score was my favorite part of the movie, you can definitely feel the scene even before the scene is complete if that makes any sense. Being Cronenberg the movie obviously has a lot of squirm-in-your-seat moments which explain the walkouts during the original premiere, but I still think just like his best work there is a reason for the unnerving and sometimes downright stomach-churning moments.

It was an absolute welcome to see Vigo play such an odd role, my favorite of his aside from the obvious being one of his shortest as Lucifer in The Prophecy. He plays the role of Saul Tenser a performance artist of the New Age where humans are on the verge of or rather in denial of human evolution.

Lea is absolutely captivating, being in a constant dream-like disconnected state of existence, due to the bodily changes humans are experiencing. She plays Caprice, the other half of the New Age Performance team of Saul Tenser Art Performance.

I love that there was no outer influence for the main theme of human evolution that is prevalent in the movie, I initially thought there was going to be some kind of extraterrestrial or unnatural force that has pushed the human evolution into the current state. However, I was glad to see that there is no real explanation as to why humanity is the way it is right now, it is considered natural.

A lot of other aspects of the themes in the show are unnaturally disturbing but not in the realm of unrealistic considering the setting, nothing seems forced or otherwise does not match with current human tendencies we see today, they are just messed up in the rules of the universe we are watching.

The movie is an experience and not a movie, if that makes sense. You don't generally watch Cronenberg to watch a movie, you watch it to see what David is trying to say through that experience, and to someone like me who knows this, I was able to experience it the way it is was meant to but I also understand why someone would either walk out or not enjoy it in the same way.

In many ways, the main character of Saul almost mirrors David's real-life experience with the Hollywood machine of being iconic, but then being given an opportunity of being greater but then having the experience flipped and is expected to conform to the unwritten rules. Confusion between your artistic voice and what the masses want from you and expect from you.

The Bad

As mentioned, this is not a movie, this is a Cronenberg piece, which mirrors the themes of the film as well where the Art Performances are done for a reason and not for mass consumption.

As a movie this has horrific pacing, stretching out scenes, re-iterating concepts, slow build-up style of shot composition, and mostly dim color palette, not really a visual film in short. Some of the nudity is weird and just there, just for the sake of it, but then again there is an in-story reason for it.

This also explains the buzz around the reception, where people who understand the lens that this has to be viewed in and people who just want to watch a movie, and I understand why someone would either walk out, hate or either be confused and bored of the film, rightly so.

The Conclusion

I enjoyed the work, a little less than I expected as I still hoped for a classic blend of movie and Cronenberg combo that I have enjoyed in the past, but this was not that.

I truly hold out hope for one last experience from David before he ultimately retires a true blend of David's voice and art which nicely fits in a regular movie-watching exprience without having to compromise on either side.

However, if this does not happen, he has done enough to ensure his legacy amongst the GOAT's in art and moviemaking.

Déjà c'est un film synthèse de toute l’œuvre de Cronenberg avec de multiples références de ses films antérieurs, donc il vaut mieux connaitre son univers pour bien entrer dedans (avec jeu de mots). Ce film est une violente critique du transhumanisme, mais Cronenberg ne donne pas de leçon, il va, comme à son habitude, au bout de la logique de ses personnages mutants qui font des spectacles de leur monstruosité, comme ceux des fêtes foraines des siècles passés. il se moque du milieu de l'art, de la course au sensationnel, toujours plus loin pour continuer à être sur le devant de la scène (référence à Stelarc pour ceux qui auront la ref). Mais dans ces temps futurs plus rien ne semble finalement choquer, même pas l'exploitation du corps d'un enfant mort. On pourrait écrire sur ce film pendant des heures, c'est ce qui fait la différence entre un chef d’œuvre et un film bas de gamme mais qui va intellectuellement être accessible tout de suite et donc plaire à un très large public. Là il faut prendre le temps de laisser décanter. Le. seul défaut de ce film est le choix de Léa Seydoux que je trouve inexpressive comme à son habitude. Expand
