Brought to us from the father of body horror himself David Cronenberg, known for such grotesque films as 'The Fly', 'Videodrome', and the sexually explicit 'Crash', along with some of his more tame yet still very violent crime films 'A History of Violence' and 'Eastern Promises', this film has his signature style written all over it, from the moody and dark atmosphere and set pieces to the graphic imagery and body mutilation presented throughout. However, this sadly doesn't make up for a narratively vague presentation, along with subpar performances from all involved. The usually brilliant Mortensen is reduced to not much more beyond a raspy voice for the entirety of the film and wears a silly cloak while Kristen Stewart also appears throughout the film in a rather forced-feeling performance as well. Story-wise, the film seems to just wander around aimlessly and relies heavily on the body horror aspects in order to distract from this, but it simply doesn't work. Overall, besides the often impressive and graphic makeup and imagery throughout, the film is almost completely forgettable and devoid of a sensible story, along with subpar performances from an otherwise talented cast. Sad to say that this is one of Cronenberg's weakest films to date. Expand

It doesn't take much to tip a Cronenberg film into the ridiculous oft time a simple sentence can make an entire movie risible. ( Are you afraid to jump into the plasma pool?).
Henceforth this film is suffering the Christopher Nolan effect whereby the audience is too stupid to divine any meaning and multiple viewings are necessary to do so.
I love dead ringers and Eastern Promises... I'm puzzled as to why he's returned to this 'body-horror' stuff from some decades previous. This is weak and embarrassing in spite of the presence of several very good actors and partially owing to a terrible one.

Interesting premise. Other than that, its body mutilation porn, rationalized as a something more artistic, which incidentally is what everyone in the movie also does. If you’ve got some body mutilation challenges I would recommend talking with some good friends and a therapist first, but if you want to lean into that, this movie seems sadly designed for that.

At first glance, disturbing, but in reality quite a poetic movie. Certainly a return for Cronenberg to a more "original self". All performances are amazing and the settings and cinematography is a masterclass. My only complain is that this movie was too short. It needed another hour or so. But I feel like Cronenberg and his editing staff did this on purpose to make us crave for more. At the end, you feel an incompleteness, a longing. Because the world of this film was so enthralling. 10 out of 10. Expand

There are also a lot of the elements Cronenberg is known for, most notably the merging of biology and technology.

However, the film suffers from an unusual problem for directors: Cronenberg has far too many ideas. While other directors will suffer from too few, he has loads of them. He just seems to have a hard time discerning which ones are good or bad or just unnecessary. They all get thrown into the mix, and they are all given far less screen time than they need to develop. In the end, none of them do.

As a result, the audience is also fed a steady stream of characters whose motives are unclear. We meet one, find out a little bit about their background, then move on and don't revisit them until much later on. Characters with no known connection are later shown to have some sort of link, but that link is never made completely clear.

In short, it looks and feels like a Cronenberg film in just about every way you could imagine. However, the muddled plot and half-baked ideas left me much more confused at the end of this film than I was at the beginning.

I'll leave this one for Cronenberg completists only.

I saw two groups walk out of the theater, which kinda makes me like this movie even more. If I had to critique it, I'd say it runs a bit too long, and could use mandatory subtitles. (It might have been the sound mix at the movie theater, but the dialogue was very hard to hear and the ambient noise was loud AF) I'm actually excited to watch it again. The practical special effects are super fun. The acting is great. Watch something different for once in your miserable lives. Expand

All I could do was sit there and watch the credits roll. When I finally walked out, the usher said “Wow, you survived,” because multiple people walked out early. “Survived” is a very appropriate word for this, it’s not something you watch, but endure. I get the strong sensation that Cronenberg is disillusioned with modern film and wanted to make his own attempt at progressing the art medium forward. With all of the discussion of corpses, body parts, and conflating art with mutilation, the message comes across clearly. The “Crimes of the Future” the title refers to are committed by the people in Cronenberg’s dystopia who embrace the evolution of art and mutating human anatomy. Police, bureaucrats, and conservatives are the enemy here, they prevent change at all costs because of fear. Whereas the ones willing to test the limits of art, consumers, and the human body are the trailblazers. There is no clear good or evil, only a hopeful destination that lies ahead, as the abrupt ending suggests. Expand

Viggo Mortensen and Léa Seydoux play performance artists in a world where people can grow new unidentified organs. This introduces the theme around organic vs synthetic life forms. That's about all there is for a plot. There are a couple of other story dead-ends that just confuse matters. Basically, it's a lot of confusing mumbo jumbo in darkly lit, grungy environments. The actors are certainly committed, esp. Kristen Stewart's awkward manner. Add in the director's love for sinister pulsing organs and weird bone chairs and you have a surreal drama about human evolution that's slow and meaningless. Expand

If you enjoy concepts, design, art, technology and all the implications that our current systems are colliding then this movie is for you! Once again Cronenberg does an amazing job of showing the underbelly (and insides of the underbelly) of our society and a potential dystopian future of our great-great-grandchildren. A-list acting as Mortensen, Stewart, and Seydoux shine. Sets, concepts, Production, Filming and Body Horror (not as much body horror as Fly, Videodrome) are Cronenberg in full swing.

If you judge a movie by whether it zips everything up in a nice body of flesh at by the end then I would just say be prepared to not receive this. However, if you can prime yourself for a mystery and true joy of a film to behold and spend the time to delve further yourself into the concepts and questions that this movie poses then you're in for a real treat.

Since we can recall, the authorities in place have always tried to control the human body with whatever means they can. Why do those in charge are so afraid of the normal people taking control of their physical selves? In 'Crimes of the Future,' body horror legend David Cronenberg presents us with a futurist manifesto in which he devises an era free of pain and the "natural" order. His first new film in almost a decade lures us with the promise of a body horror nightmare; instead, what we get is a meditation on how the art of body modification could be the ultimate weapon against those who try to keep the status quo whatever the cost. There's no crime like the present, and this strange but original film reminds us of that. Expand

TL;DR - I have been a fan of Cronenberg since I watched and experienced 'The Fly' 1986 as a kiddo nearly 15 years ago, and to this day consider it one of my favorite Romance/sci-fi stories of all time.

All his movies that I watched always had more than just the body horror he is so famously known for, the same is present here but is missing the right blending technique of a good story that I feel he excelled at.

Crimes of the Future (COF) does have more than just the body horror but feels similar to when you try doing an activity after a long break, the muscle memory is there but you are still not quite there.

COF feels like David returning but not fully back yet, and just the hope of seeing him make something iconic once again before his inevitable retirement is what I hold onto, the man is 79 FFS.

COF is an experience not so much a movie, as it lacks a lot of the usual movie markers that our brain is so used to, this is also the reason that it does not quite reach the excellence of his previous works.

The Good

The score was my favorite part of the movie, you can definitely feel the scene even before the scene is complete if that makes any sense. Being Cronenberg the movie obviously has a lot of squirm-in-your-seat moments which explain the walkouts during the original premiere, but I still think just like his best work there is a reason for the unnerving and sometimes downright stomach-churning moments.

It was an absolute welcome to see Vigo play such an odd role, my favorite of his aside from the obvious being one of his shortest as Lucifer in The Prophecy. He plays the role of Saul Tenser a performance artist of the New Age where humans are on the verge of or rather in denial of human evolution.

Lea is absolutely captivating, being in a constant dream-like disconnected state of existence, due to the bodily changes humans are experiencing. She plays Caprice, the other half of the New Age Performance team of Saul Tenser Art Performance.

I love that there was no outer influence for the main theme of human evolution that is prevalent in the movie, I initially thought there was going to be some kind of extraterrestrial or unnatural force that has pushed the human evolution into the current state. However, I was glad to see that there is no real explanation as to why humanity is the way it is right now, it is considered natural.

A lot of other aspects of the themes in the show are unnaturally disturbing but not in the realm of unrealistic considering the setting, nothing seems forced or otherwise does not match with current human tendencies we see today, they are just messed up in the rules of the universe we are watching.

The movie is an experience and not a movie, if that makes sense. You don't generally watch Cronenberg to watch a movie, you watch it to see what David is trying to say through that experience, and to someone like me who knows this, I was able to experience it the way it is was meant to but I also understand why someone would either walk out or not enjoy it in the same way.

In many ways, the main character of Saul almost mirrors David's real-life experience with the Hollywood machine of being iconic, but then being given an opportunity of being greater but then having the experience flipped and is expected to conform to the unwritten rules. Confusion between your artistic voice and what the masses want from you and expect from you.

The Bad

As mentioned, this is not a movie, this is a Cronenberg piece, which mirrors the themes of the film as well where the Art Performances are done for a reason and not for mass consumption.

As a movie this has horrific pacing, stretching out scenes, re-iterating concepts, slow build-up style of shot composition, and mostly dim color palette, not really a visual film in short. Some of the nudity is weird and just there, just for the sake of it, but then again there is an in-story reason for it.

This also explains the buzz around the reception, where people who understand the lens that this has to be viewed in and people who just want to watch a movie, and I understand why someone would either walk out, hate or either be confused and bored of the film, rightly so.

The Conclusion

I enjoyed the work, a little less than I expected as I still hoped for a classic blend of movie and Cronenberg combo that I have enjoyed in the past, but this was not that.

I truly hold out hope for one last experience from David before he ultimately retires a true blend of David's voice and art which nicely fits in a regular movie-watching exprience without having to compromise on either side.

However, if this does not happen, he has done enough to ensure his legacy amongst the GOAT's in art and moviemaking.

Something is wrong with the mind-body relationship, but what? Would natural anatomy cage the psychic identity we self-attribute or is it the mental idea we have of ourselves that is already cramped in itself? By answering: "both hypotheses" one obtains perhaps the most exhaustive answer of Cronenberg's cinema. And then? Is it right or not to try to modify yourself by experimenting, cheer for the ultimate Metamorphosis and Hybrid? Brundlefly's man-machine fusion was a hubris that had to be aborted out of compassion, but this time ecological transhumanism (plasticophages adapted to environmental pollution) that passes through body art surgery or inner beauty in the literal sense gives the impression of being a desired and desirable revolution, a wished psychophysically political anarchy and as such prosecuted by a Foucaultian and Kafkaesque law, a contrast between cosmetics and aesthetics, between those who reject neoplasms by removing them and those who want to preserve them to achieve a definitive organic transformation, the "monstrum" as a prodigious wonder and not as a repulsive horror. It may be Giger, but it is no longer clear whether dystopia or utopia, degeneration or creativity, a tremendous or fascinating, disgusting or attractive, repellent or salvific goal. The algid detachment of the director, who defines himself more and more as afferent to conceptual art, whether Burroughs or Ballard, and a work more interested in the manifesto than in its manifestation, do not help the fruition. Last but not least, perhaps it would have been more appropriate to title the film "Crimes of the Past". During these past decades there have been the ORLAN performances, mass piercings and tattoos, the endless cinecomics saga on mutants, the virtualization of social relationships. If the Toronto filmmaker has noticed, what happens to them here?

So long as you're someone who enjoys weird movies with disturbing images and themes, I think you'll find something to enjoy here. Visually speaking I think this is Cronenberg's best looking film. Lots of really beautiful shots with interesting lighting and color palette. I watched it on 4k physical disc and while I don't think there is any HDR, the colors still looked great and the picture was very crisp and detailed. The set pieces and props (beds, operating table, surgical arms) are all very fleshy and bony, standard cronenberg. There's plenty of interesting and bizarre dialogue throughout the movie, but I'm sure plenty of people will find it rather slow. I found the story and theme of the movie (humans evolving past their modern biological form, developing new organs, and governments wanting to regulate/prevent it) to be rather interesting, however my biggest gripe with the film is there's not really any major climactic point in the movie, at least that's how it felt to me. The film just sort of ended when I wasn't expecting it to. I would have much preferred a more climactic moment near the end or an "oh s***" moment for some of the main characters, but we never really get it. When it comes to the main characters all the performances are good to great, with a standout being Kristen Stewart's role. Her portrayal of that character being a nerdy, awkward, *very* sexually frustrated office "bureaucrat" who constantly chokes up when speaking really stole the show for me. Kristen's character was easily one of my favorite parts of the movie. All in all I'd probably give it a 6.5. Expand

Expand

Cronenberg's biopunk aesthetic vision of the future is pretty cool, but the environmental themes of the movie are totally superficial and the horror aspects are not unique or unnerving enough to be interesting.

I'm torn on this one. I love the cast and I dig the premise but I felt the movie was just so boring and it ultimately made me uninterested in what was happening.
