If you read the short story, and TRULY appreciated it for what it was (far before seeing the film), you would dislike this movie a bit more...The acting is great of course, but the film moved too far from Proulx's original feel.

This movie is a wonderful movie, but I wonder why Del Mar has to be so angry with his wife. So what if she isn't his true love, it doesn't have to be so violent in cruel. IT isn't her fault she feel in love with a bisexual.

While the movie was beautiful and emotionally unerving I fgured out how they took a short story and made it into a full 3 hour film. The fist 20 minutes were so lsow i was about to leave but the movie did pick up the pace and moved me deeply.

It was subtle in places where it could have made a play for our emotions. It didn't dwell on the sex - in fact it would have been just fine without it - just focusing on the intense feelings that these two men develop for each other. Only in the movies does EVERYBODY have immediate sex, followed by a relationship. What it made me realize is that by the 60's we'd lost the capacity for intimate friendships (probably a couple hundred years ago). Would that the agendas could be forgotten, and this movie appreciated for the excellent story that it tells. Expand

Groundbreaking in its content, "Brokeback Mountain" takes another step in acceptance, without handing out pamphlets. Strong, if not brilliant performances all around. Heath Ledger - need I say more?

What you respond to is the fact that these romantic leads had the guts to do the movie, but there's no real spark. Between the two, Gyllenhaal aquits himself better. I never really bought Ledger's Gary Cooper act, or the fact that he never aged. He didn't look much older than his supposed 19-year-old daughter. Within these limits, still a compelling story. Expand

The What a concept, bashing pictures without seeing them, and doing so with a political agenda! Anyway, occasionally, this picture is too restrained - a bit too slow and subdued - but regardless it's done tastefully and thoughtfully. The acting is pretty strong, easily the best performance in Ledger's career. It's definitely a character-driven piece, not story-driven, which is actually pretty refreshing given Hollywood's lack of three-dimensional characters these days. Worth seeing, unless you're close-minded, in which case bring those signs, furrow those brows, get that rabid look primed up and start the line right next to Rusty! Expand

What this is is an incredibly well-made Titanic story with a interesting look into a self-loathing mind set. However, you shouldn't even listen to those who try to dismiss its premise of "gay love story" as a gimmick. Not because it rises above that, but because assuming that audiences would respond differently if it were about a man and a woman is an unfair comparison because the entire story revolves around the idea that it is a GAY romance. It's the equivalent of saying "Would you still like Guess Who's Coming to Dinner if everyone was white?" Expand

It works on a mild score like a musical theatre filled with drama, cheat and decisive that sets up these two flawed yet loved lead characters projected by the master Ang Lee.

Problems I had were the forced parallelism between the two leads, the obvious problem found in shooting the film over a span of something like 20 years (little to no ageing of found in the lead characters), and the poor musical score (country tinged, slow acoustic, used way too much.) At some points, the movie is fantastic (the scenes from the original Brokeback winter, and the final ten minutes or so) but, the movie never convinces the viewer of its greatness. I wouldn't say it was pacing, nor the subject matter, but somewhere, the movie went wrong. Expand

Ang Lee has done a fantastic job of "showing" as opposed to "preaching" morality about homosexuality. This is particularly vital as it allows us to simply become engrossed in this tragic but heart-moving love story. Where the film fails, I believe, is the choice of setting. The time and place chosen does not appeal to most people, and we would rather experience a remarkable love story without the added distraction of cowboys and rodeos. I'm sure many would say cowboys are needed in this movie, just as the ship sinking was needed in the "Titanic" . The point, however, is that the added cowboy element has little if no benefit to the story-line. On balance though, it is a satisfying watch with marvelous cinematography and music. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The relationship this has to truth, is possibly - that the author saw a man in a bar give another man a look she could only associate with passion (source quote).

Two sittings. First, I couldn’t watch it. I got a gist, but there were a lot of silly wigs and moustaches.

Second time... Day after watching. Yes. Alain de Boton joke- “If we move from anger, to sadness, then we will have made psychological progress.” From Why you will marry the wrong person talk. Meaning- this is the sort of thing psychotherapists say…
But so, reminds me, people know this, and they do it. Perhaps even, the scriptwriters did. Ennis starts, angry- ends sad. You will have a sense of achievement, if you do this.

Mistake at the end. I feel having ‘he was a friend of mine’ on the soundtrack- as the song you have in your head to go home to... is a mistake. Current understanding, 'he was a friend of mine'- the song- is not saying, he was my lover.

I thought it was alright. So it’s a passionate affair.

Painting by numbers? What do I mean. You have to meet someone, in 5 seconds flat. Jack’s parents, are protestant. The house is virtually empty except for a cross. Almost ludicrously so. Bosses are stubborn.

I think that the four main actors had a bit of a dare and giggle, that they would all be nude at some point. Drinking dare.

Apart from that, and a few other things, it was fine. Fairly compelling.

Thank you.

Does it use beautiful people to get your attention? Yes.

First, let me say that I really hate it when the hero gets killed by a deus ex machina.
In many ways like Million Dollar Baby, another Hollywood tear-jerker where way too attractive actors & actresses pose as real people in a naturalistic world full of artifice. I did feel a smidge sad when Heath found his shirt (though I saw it coming when the shirt went missing in reel 2), but mostly I felt that these two dudes were too mopey and existential to be real gay cowboys. I mean, unless I missed something, they're not supposed to be French, are they? They behaved like starry-eyed teenagers past the point (and age) of believability; as much as I could buy the first half hour of meet-cute and the last five minutes of human loss, the big fat middle was a dull TV message-movie. Did Matthew Shepherd really die for this? And brand me a stereo-typer, but (in my limited experience) of most of the gay couples I've met, at least one of the partners displays way more of a fey affect then either of these two stoic shepherds ever showed.

I'm a fan of Ang Lee's films, but Heath Ledger's performance almost ruined the movie for me. I thought his use of his face and mouth was exagerrated and distracting--he was hard to understand, and frankly, frustrating to watch. (I grew up with a grandad who was this "strong silent type," so maybe my expectations are unrealistic?! Grandad was a master...) However, Jake Gyllenhall's performance saved the movie, and the cinematography is beautiful. But, the intensity just isn't sustained, and the screenplay somehow doesn't bring to life the depth and breadth of all those years' hidden love. Something didn't work here, and I think it's in Annie Proulx's short story. The movie ultimately seems at its core like merely an overexpanded idea, relying on a foundation of supposed bleakness that's unexplored. It doesn't quite work, and it's a shame. I thought the Ice Storm understood and explored its era and culture much better, and I expected more from Mr. Lee. Expand

With some gorgeous shots of Wyoming in its back pocket, Ang Lee's romantic western is a moving portrayal of gay love in a time when it was unacceptable to the majority of society. Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal have undeniable chemistry and their love is believable. However, I have many problems with their romance, which prevents me from loving the film. Firstly, Lee decides to show them eating beans and then bang, all of a sudden, they are lovers. Though there is sexual tension between them beforehand, it seems odd that in a time when being gay is so taboo, two men would quickly rush into sex.

Secondly, the film skims through years and opts to ignore the negative side of this romance. Yes, these two love each other. However, what about their wives (Michelle Williams and Anne Hathaway)? What about their children? Not only are they both adulterers, but they ignore their spouses and children repeatedly in the film. I get that they are repressed homosexuals, which is obviously terrible, but it makes it hard for me to feel sympathy for two men who are so morally repugnant. The only mistake these women made was marrying a man who is gay, which apparently makes them deserving of being cheated on. There is no sympathy for the struggles of our gay lovers due to their lack of respect for the women in their lives and, heck, even their own kids. Ennis (Ledger) very clearly never sees his daughters. By the end, he only has a relationship with one (Kate Mara). How is this okay? Lee makes some effort to condemn the deception to Ennis' wife, but quickly reverts to trying to make us feel sympathy for him once more.

That said, their relationship is undeniably electric. Though I have problems with the rushing of it all, Lee does expertly counter this by showing Gyllenhaal's initial hesitation to rush things with Hathaway. Through this, we are able to see his true colors and sexual desires. It is also showcased in his interactions with Hathaway and Ledger. While with his wife, he clearly lacks passion and is on edge. With Ledger, he is loose, free, and head over heels. Lee develops this angle brilliantly.

Additionally, the ending sequence made me into a believer. The clothing, the photo, and the trauma Ennis faces at the end, really hit home. In order for non-gay viewers to truly overcome any prejudices, this scene is almost a much, because it shows how real their love is for them. They did not choose this life. Instead, it was who they are. This is ever present in this scene and is truly the dramatic and romantic triumph of this film. While the development of the romance felt off for me, the ending was easily the best part of this film.

Brokeback Mountain is beloved by many. For me, it is a good western and good romance, but simply never commits to actually developing the romance, instead opting to fast forward to the "good bits" with no build-up. Even worse, it never fully condemns the more reprehensible actions of Ennis and Jack. That said, the emotional power and force of this film is impossible to deny.

It's an okay drama that also shows the dangers and hostile perceptions gay men experience in society, worth watching once, but doesn't live up to the hype. 6/10 for a mediocre movie. Expand

Ang Lee is a good director and "Brokeback Mountain" is a good film too. Heath Ledger has a difficult role and he plays very well. Jake Gyllenhaal is good too but Ledger is better. Good film.

Can this really be veridical? - truthful? - accurate? Or does this extraordinary ranking merely reflect the PC sensibility - the Gay "cowboy" romance everybody MUST love - that afflicts the latte drinking New York Times reading chattering class? I'm betting the latter. That doesn't mean this isn't worth seeing. But I remember when films about "men who couldn't talk about their feelings" were literally a dima dozen, a few decadesa go. And whom am I to say that new generations shouldn't redicover a timeless theme in a new setting? Ang Lee is also one of our best directors. SO why not see it now? I will see it, but only long after the buzz is gone and the self-righteous moralizing of the Leftist zombies who monopolize reviewing - probably when I can see it for two bucks. Why? Many friends say the short story by Annie Proulx is considerably better. Even reviewer "Neepy" writes "it is too safe. I didn't feel much chemistry, bonding, or even lust between the two cowboys." Thoughts others have echoed - it simply isn't as good as it's made out to be. It simply isn't as good or believable as Ang Lee's "The Wedding Banquet," another gay themed film about tragic love. So why do reviewers love a film that indulges in all the negative stereotypes about westerners and Mexicans? Because gays are a priviledged "minority." This is the "Philadelphia" or "Angels in America" of our time. The lemmings are out this season, ruining a good film for those who aren't bird watchers. Too bad they don't simply leave their agenda driven baggage at home and simply let the art speak for itself. Expand

To me the story could have been more. There are some nice moments where we feel the characters pain having to deal with this uncontrollable feeling. They are very well directed. However there really was not that big of drama! I have an open mind and that is why i wanted to see this movie. but it really did not deliver to me. I dont know what it is. it just was not there. I guess it has to be moments where Hey they get spotted acting a little to friendly with each other but nothing happens... This is a sad story. Well worth at least one time glance but nothing more. Just Over rated! Now Ang Lee can get back to more important movies Like "Hulk II" Expand

Beautiful scenery and cinematography, reasonable depiction of herding sheep on summer range, good cast, and fair acting (nothing special, as others seem to think). BUT: The story is just not engaging. There's no chemistry between the lovers, no flirting nuances, no buildup. In fact, their initial lovemaking seems more like an impulsive act of rape. Like one of the other reviewers herein, I think I must have missed the "love" part (maybe I dozed off). And much of the rest of the story is either implausible or uninteresting. Will they finally get together and live happily ever after? We simply don't care. One of the "great films of all time"? No way. Even if you narrow the category to gay films, it's not even in the same league as "The Crying Game". I'm always perplexed when I'm in such disagreement with the reviewers, especially the "user comments" on this site, with which I normally agree. So I analyzed the data a little more carefully. For the weekend of Jan. 13-15, BBM (in its 6th week) grossed $5.8M, which is in ninth place. Seems odd that, by now, word of mouth for this monumental film would be doing at least as well as "Memoirs of a Geisha" or "Fun With Dick & Jane". I know, "there's no accounting for taste". I also looked at the Top 10 films of 2005 where, based on critics' reviews, BBM is #6. Excluding BBM, the average number of User Comments for the other top 9 films is 43. BBM, on the other hand, has over 460 User Comments. Seems odd that a film that is generating so much positive feedback from users would not be doing better at the box office. Or could it be that the ballot box is getting stuffed by folks with an agenda, trying to generate interest and help its chances for an Oscar. Just a thought. Expand

I found Brokeback Mountain trite and frustrating, often boring, using more gay stereotypes than I like to see: punitive fathers, wives who suffer in silence (until they blow), alcoholism, self-hatred and denial, violent death by homophobes (I know, I know, stereotypes are often rooted in reality!) and many cinematic stereotypes as well - long shots of snow-capped mountains, full moons, empty decaying towns blowing in the wind, etc. I was never quite convinced by the "love" between these two - (sexual attraction, yes, but I couldn't figure out what else) or the motivation for Jack and Ennis enduring 20 mostly miserable years during a period of great national change. On some levels I found this an anti-gay movie (emphasis on depression, punishment and deprivation) rather than a sensitive portrayal of a loving, though doomed, relationship. I did like the scenes of the sheep being moved. Expand

The only thing worthwhile about this film is the theme, and that is never enough to create a good story. For my part, I live in the desert, and am no stranger to its seduction. When I wake up in the morning, I see scenery just as beautiful if not more so than in the film, and this landscape is populated by plenty of people whose lives will never be celebrated in particular or archetype. The form of the story is excellent, but the story itself is painfully old fashioned and the obsessive focus on the lovers was truly tiring. Why was further attention not paid to the wives? The children? The community? The supposed murderers? Surely their characters are just as interesting as the two dimensional (though beautiful) Ennis and Jack. Just because it's about gay cowboys doesn't make it worth the filmstock it was printed on. It may have been remarkable, but it is not truly great. Expand

Gay love needs to be more tenderly presented by people you care for, and in this movie it seems more like lust among the shepherds. The real issues involving families with children by the gay lovers is only superficially explored and the script seems dry and lacking in passion. It`s not the actors fault but this message needs a real loving and profound script. It will win awards for its hype and daring to show homosexual intercourse for the mainstream first time, but it could have said much more and much more elegantly. I thought after watching it I could tell my heterosexual friends to watch so they could have a better understanding of the gay life, but the movie itself is not worth the recommendation. I'm not saying that in the end everything should have worked out and they lived out their lives together, but the ending was terrible, I was struggling to even bring a tear to my eye because it was obvious that Ennes didn't share Jack's feelings about love and happiness, granted it would be difficult in those times to live a happy life as a gay couple, but Ennes also displayed little emotion at the end of the movie, and I really can't say anything else besides this movie was dissapointing. I would recommend "Beautiful Thing" , it more closely reflects the challenges a gay person faces in these times and it has a happier ending. Expand

Although the press and the gay-friendly publicity tried to sell the idea that it was a true homosexual romance, I was not convinced. Watching the film, I found that the script suggests something different: two lonely men whose unfulfilled emotional needs lead to a homosexual affair, despite their marriages and individual commitments. There is no love in this. The film is essentially about doubts, unfulfilled emotions, moral and emotional conflicts, the breaking of taboos and the consequences that it has afterwards, in the life of the one who did it. In any case, it is undeniably one of the most remarkable films of Heath Ledger's career. The actor deserves applause for his work in this film, where he dominated and stole the limelight from his own colleague Jake Gyllenhaal. This actor, for his part, has always been much more obliterated and the way he interpreted was not so interesting or consistent. Ang Lee did a decent job, but he seemed to be particularly focused on giving the film a good scenery and cinematography, with great success in that. Even so, the result of his work was a lukewarm, slow-paced film, and that makes it annoying, cutting off the connection between the audience and what they're watching. Expand

The plot is thin and incredibly unexplained, and no I'm not talking about the ending because I GOT IT, but the fact that the men could have wives and children and still be in love with each other could have used much more explanation. I don't know why people don't question that. I understand how it is, but it saddens me, as a gay man, to have this garbage strewn onto the public without any explanation. The cinematography is good, the acting is good, the story is terrible, and it is very very very boring. I know slower moving movies that kept me more entertained that this garbage. I can't believe people think this is 'artful'. It wouldn't take very much for me to come up with a better screenplay involving the forbidden love of two men - making it more interesting, more developed, and could probably even add a twist ending to it. (thx matthew shephard rip off storyline) . there is nothing inspirational or motivating about this film. as a gay man this film leaves me with a huge feeling of disgust at the overused and offensive stereotypes (while the limp wrist lisping type is totally avoided, you still have closeted tragic love and a relationship based on carnal proximity and no spiritual or real communication oriented committments) this is a horrible film overall. 3 points just because it's gay themed and "hollywood" everything else that basically matters in this film is absent and it's found lacking. A disappointing movie. Sorry, but I just didn't see the chemistry between Heath and Jay. I found it hard to understand some of the dialogue and might have missed key points because of this. HORRIBLE! just because its about life as a homosexual cowboy in the 1960's-1980's is the only reason it won any awards. horrible is not a good enough word to describe this story. i have plenty of gay friends who agree with me. its HORRIBLE! just because its about life as a homosexual cowboy in the 1960's-1980's is the only reason it won any awards. horrible is not a good enough word to describe this story. i have plenty of gay friends who agree with me. its just a bad movie. period. thats it. im actually speechless cause i cant believe it won ANY awards at all! This movie is a tragedy (in the Romeo and Juliet sense) that could have had power, but failed because of it's completely non-believable depiction of how the relationship formed. If anyone thinks Ang Lee may be homosexual... I would have to say he can't be. Not if he directs a movie with such an unrealistic development of a gay relationship. Expand

Boring and overlong; does not engage the emotions. If it wasn't about gay men the critics would have slammed it.

Didn't anyone read the story? A wonderful, a perfect short story, so dense, you could almost smell, feel, hear every written word. Nothing of all that was to be seen or felt in this movie. It was so disappointing.

It was soo long and boring. I thought for sure it would have been a worthwhile movie with the awards it was winning but it was so long and drawn out. Hats off to Heath though, I guess you can say he was one hell of an actor.

I give it a two rating because some of the scenery was great. The acting was average, the characters forgettable. An overall terrible movie, with nothing to interest the viewer and the ending just cuts off unexpectedly with no resolution. I give it a two rating because some of the scenery was great. Starts out blah, remains blah and ends before you can say blah. A joke that it garnered so much acclaim, one of the worst movies I have seen in years. Expand

I give it a 2 for the photography and landscape for where it was filmed, other than that it in no way lived up to its expectations, the "oscar" abilty acting was no where near what one could deem "oscar" the accents made it unbearable, and not to mention there was no timeline for this movie, it just jumped around leaving the audience without a clue for how much time has elapsed. The characters did not evolve and niether did the movie. The homosexual love affair and predictable "hate-crime" ending was only a front to try and make this the most controversial movie of the century, which it definitly did not accomplish. Its acting and plot were glorified for greatness and instead the movie left its audience wondering what they had just paid money to watch. Expand
