My wife and I were able to see Brokeback when it first opened in NYC. It is a haunting love story that says a lot more than the relationship of two loner type men. It gets to the heart of so many of our simmering up tight relationships in the USA.

But I hear a lot of people saying it is universal, that it can be compared to Romeo and Juliet. I believe that to be very untrue. Romeo and Juliet never hated the fact that they were together. But Heath's character did. [***Spoilers***] In the movie his father showed him a dead rancher that had been killed because he lived on the ranch with another guy. This made Heath's character scared to give into his feelings. I thought that it stayed very true to the feelings and the hardships that gay couples have to face. Exquisitely crafted film; its crux is poignantly encapsuled in the last frame with the closet on the left and the window showing the wide open spaces of West on the right - the difference between self-suppresion and living life to the fullest.

The homophobic should not watch this movie-->unless they want to begin developing their compassion toward minorities of all shape, size, orientation or color. If yes, then this movie could be a place for the homophobe to start expanding their hearts and minds to real troubles others experience. As for myself, I might stop crying in a couple of months. Masterfully done, lee, portrays a part of our US history and culture many would soon like to forget. This story, although set in a mid to late century midwest as a 'cowboy movie', we can pull from it the parallels to many other closeted walks of life. The movie deals with the overwelming presure that this society puts on gay men to stay in the closet and not be true to themselves or the people in their lives. This movie could not have been done any better. Although it is a shame that two people who love eachother could not have shared more of their lives together without fear. Expand

Sure enough - the slow pace might seem boring to those less observant, but this is not an action movie. It is a fine and true ringing story of two young men who find themselves in a situation that is not easy for them to handle. Love between two men is still "forbidden" in many peoples minds. Jack is aware (of course) of what people would think of him but that doesn´t stop him from trying to find his true love. I think that Jack in many ways has an innocence to him - he has still not seen the evil things people can do to those who are different. Ennis on the other hand is very afraid to be different - to be gay. The reason that Ennis is so afraid is because his father showed him at an early age what can happen to gay people. The acting in this movie is so wonderful - Heath´s and Jake´s in particular, and everything about the story and the setting is beautiful as well. This movie only contains a very short sex scene, with no nudity. It is a far cry from anything pornograpic. Yes, this film contains some adultery (like many, many, other films) but it`s not portrayed as something noble or good in any way. Alma´s heartbreak is one of the strongest scenes in this film! However both Ennis and Jack are good fathers who care for their children - the love Ennis has for his daughters is really beautiful to see. The lenght of this review perhaps suggests that I´m absorbed by this film - and that´s definately true!! I really have come to love this film, because it took my heart totally of guard! :-) An interesting thing: You never see the face of Ennis´s father in the flashback - he is very much an threatening person in young Ennis´s life. On the contrary Jacks mother is shown as a loving woman and a loving christian - notice the cross on the wall behind her as she speaks to Ennis. Perhaps a little hint to the religious right - Chistianity is about love - not hate! Expand

Gyllenhall and Ledger give the best performances I've seen coming out of Hollywood in a long long time (as do the women - go girls!) And I don't say that as someone trying to push a "homosexual agenda" (whatever that is?). I'm straight and happily married. All that pain and missed oportunity began there - that was the chance for the future wives to never have been brought into the picture and all thier pains and anguishes. Drama and a bit of humor at times (the harmonica jokes), etc. Tragic. People with souls will like this movie. People with hearts will like this movie. As a straight male and a devout Christian, I can honestly say that my wife and I loved this movie and plan to go with friends to see it again this weekend. I agree with whoever wrote "This movie was beyond brilliant." Love is a force of nature and of God. Those who disparrage any of God's children are in urgent need of His grace and have some soul searching to do themselves to determine why their concerns lie so much outside of themselves. We should all remember that "God looked at everything he had made, and he found it very good." Expand

It's been two weeks since I saw it and I'm still deeply affected by it. For those of you who dismiss this movie because "if it were a man and woman, this movie would not have received so much hype"; I'd like to point out that, if this movie were about a man and a woman, then there wouldn't be any point. The reason that Ennis and Jack are such tragic figures and the love between them is so unique is because the society wouldn't allow their relationship to flourish. The loss and sadness are attributed to the intolerence and hatred that were imposed on gay people even in today's society. Expand

I find it irksome that the comment "if it had been a man and a woman it would have been boring/common/trite/etc." seems to be used by most of those who rate this movie low. WAKE UP, sluggards--that is the point. What is portrayed in this I find it irksome that the comment "if it had been a man and a woman it would have been boring/common/trite/etc." seems to be used by most of those who rate this movie low. WAKE UP, sluggards--that is the point. What is portrayed in this movie is a tragedy because, if it had been a man and woman, it wouldn't have been an issue. Can't you even sense a prejudiced, homophobic comment when you utter it? I heard Gael Garcia Bernal say, when asked about whether playing a gay character was hard, say something like "I never understand that question. Gay characters have sex. I have sex too. Gay characters love. I love too. Why is it that no one asks me if it would be hard to play a murderer, a rapist, a torturer?" Ennis and Jack should have been able to have a relationship without fearing reprisal, rejection, self-loathing, and intolerance. It doesn't take reading too many of these comments here to understand that 1963 and 2006 aren't all that different after all. Expand

This is a rare quality film. Jake Gyllenhaal is a brilliant optimistic isolated heart broken Jack twist, Heath ledger is a stunning portrait of turmoil and self hatred, Michelle Williams and Anne Hathaway show a range beyond any of their previous work portraying 2 different versions of a wife who cannot connect with the man whom she loves. The energy behind everything that goes unsaid is really the underlying constant in our own hearts. Sexuality is this films novelty but by no means it's limit. The story is presented as it lay. No cause, no reason, no blame, no answers... just like real life. The images are beautiful, the plot atypical, and the effort by all involved incredible. For all who make comments about its characters without having seen the film, you are a bigot. You are no different from someone who discriminates against race, class, sexuality, disability, gender, height, weight, number of hairs on your head, or level of education. Somehow this enables NO ONE to cast the first stone. Expand

It's a controversial subject but one that's told brilliantly through Ang Lee. It doesn't preach about its subject but lets it be told through the characters and the people who love them but are devasted by their relationship.
