But amidst the grand beauty of Brokeback Mountain, the two men fall in love with one another. But when the job is done, they're forced to walk their separate ways. Ennis' father taught him to condemn homosexuality when he was a child, and so he began to condemn his own feelings. Both men are forced to deny the only passion either of them will ever feel. They pretend so as to fit in with the others. And in doing so they hurt themselves and carry great pain with each passing moment. Both Ennis and Jack marry and have children. But every once in while, they'd get to meet up on Brokeback Mountain where they can finally stop pretending and expose there vulnerability. This is where their hearts truly lie. Brokeback Mountain is powerful, beautiful and poetic. It hits you right on your chest like a bullet when you least expect it and steals away your heart. The cinematography is gorgeous, the score is elegant and all performances, particularly Ledger's as the restrained and distant Ennis Del Mar, are marvellous. This is Ang Lee's masterpiece. Brokeback Mountain was the best film of 2005 and the greatest / most important love story of this century. Expand

It is such a beautiful and poignant film, that also benefits from being gorgeously shot and adeptly acted and directed. The film does move slowly of course, but I personally think that Brokeback Mountain was deliberately paced like that(I said very similar things about 2001 and The Godfather too, they are constantly criticised for being boring yet both had their reasons for being paced like that). The slow pacing allowed us to empathise with the characters more, and that paid off, because the characterisations are superb. As are the beautifully written and thought-provoking screenplay and gentle scoring. Ang Lee's direction is the best it's been here I feel, while the cinematography and scenery are simply breathtaking. The acting is excellent. Heath Ledger I think gives his best performance here(sorry Dark Knight fans, I loved him there, but he was beyond amazing here), while Jake Gyllanhaal is very believable, and Michelle Williams is heart-wrenching. Also Brokeback Mountain is quite emotionally affecting, it really makes you think and the sheer beauty of the visuals, acting and story are enough to make me cry, and I was in pieces after the ending. In conclusion, a mesmerising film. 10/10 Bethany Cox Expand

The cinematography is wonderful and the scenery of this film takes my breath away. This sin was not giving Brokeback Mountain Best Picture. This movie is hands down the best performance that Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhal have ever given. Wow. The script is one of the realest, heartfelt, moving movies I have ever had the pleasure of viewing. In a way, this movie made me a better person after viewing it. Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal performances were astounding, they gave such beautiful, emotionally powerful, and deep performances and their chemistry was extraordinary just so beautiful and natural; two of the best performances I have ever seen and some of the best chemistry I have seen between co-stars. Michelle Williams, Anne Hathaway, Linda Cardellini, and Anna Faris gave outstanding supporting performances. The writing was exceptional, the story and screenplay were just so beautifully heartbreaking. The character development of Ennis Del Mar, Jack Twist, and Alma Beers Del Mar was phenomenal. The cinematography was gorgeous. The costumes were stupendous especially ones wore by Jake Gyllenhaal, Heath Ledger, Michelle Williams, Anne Hathaway, Anna Faris, and David Harbour. The makeup and hairstyling was spectacular especially on Heath Ledger, Anne Hathaway, Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Williams, Anna Faris, Linda Cardellini, David Harbour, and Kate Mara. Expand

In the beginning feels a little bit boring, but later the story becomes a sad drama who ends at tragedy and makes you feel with a lump in throat with a amazing sadness.
the photography, script and performances are impeccable, I would dare to said that this is most popular gay movie in the history, and with a good reason, shape portrait incredibly realistic what it was being gay in the american west in the 60's and the impact it had on western society and hollywood was phenomenal.
It's a shame what Heath Ledger is dead.

I found this movie emotionally wrenching and very well made. However I think that it is an exaggeration to call this movie a masterpiece. In my mind it is a well-crafted assemblage of quality elements (cinematography, acting, screenplay) but I found this movie emotionally wrenching and very well made. However I think that it is an exaggeration to call this movie a masterpiece. In my mind it is a well-crafted assemblage of quality elements (cinematography, acting, screenplay) but somehow does not quite gel into a whole. I think this leads to a captivating movie experience for many as we can on our own "assemble" the satisfying movie experience that we each want to see in the movie. For me like a few other site users, there was not enough chemistry between Jack and Ennis, not just of the physical kind. I think that in particular Jack's character remained undeveloped...Jake Gyllenhall either was not given enough from the script or he didn't quite make the character seem plausible. This may seem to be a small detail but I kept on noticing that Jake's eyebrows looked plucked which I think of as anomalous given the time and place in which the story occurred. Nowadays it looks strange when a man plucks his eyebrows...it would have been 100x stranger in early 1960's Wyoming. Was that supposed to be a signal of gayness to other men? Why such an obvious one? This, to some minor, incongruity signals to me the more general problem of how to understand the main characters' and in particular Jack's motivation. He didn't seem to be a convincing character, more of a cypher. Expand

In addition to its many, many genuine excellences, Ang Lee's so-called "gay cowboy" movie is also notable for providing me with the most simultaneously entertaining and disturbing time I've had watching a movie preview trailer In addition to its many, many genuine excellences, Ang Lee's so-called "gay cowboy" movie is also notable for providing me with the most simultaneously entertaining and disturbing time I've had watching a movie preview trailer since junior high school. The preview came on just before Syriana (a movie which, blaming as it does all the world's evils on American oil cartels, you'd hardly label as one especially attractive to a "red-state" audience) and when it became apparent that Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger) and Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal) were going to share more than a can of beans, about twenty-five people in the audience, almost as one, simultaneously responded with a loud, high-pitched cry of "Eeeee-YEW!!!" Imagine that: a movie NOT dealing with horror or torture whose trailer reduces a group of seemingly intelligent, well-mannered adults to a bunch of 7-year-old girls reacting to a waterbug skittering across the basement floor at their Brownie meeting! Despite this and the recent news of a Utah multiplex suddenly yanking it despite the fact that it was making money there as everywhere (one word to their management staff: IDIOTS!) this film, despite its instant status as a Jay Leno punchline, is affecting and moving people all over the country who are willing to give it a chance, and it's doing so for several very simple, basic reasons: it's a beautifully written and directed, spectacularly shot, superbly acted piece of great storytelling that stays with you no matter what your political, religious or sexual persuasion. (Even conservative critic Michael Medved praised it, although part of this may stem from his awareness that his attempts to sabotage Million Dollar Baby last year by revealing its secrets in print and on TV might just have "tipped it" enough to win it several Oscars last year, and he's not making THAT mistake again.) Quentin Tarantino said at Cannes that he liked Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11 not because he agreed with its stance but because he found it supremely entertaining, and regardless of your views on homosexuality, Brokeback Mountain works as a classic, old fashioned star-crossed and circumstance-separated lovers' "weeper" in the tradition of Back Street, Waterloo Bridge and many other movies familiar to your grandparents and those who like to tape Turner Classic Movies at 3 in the morning. (A more recent film parallel? Well, perhaps 2004's The Notebook...up to a point.) Writers Annie Proulx, Diana Ossana and Larry McMurtry (whose Lonesome Dove is undoubtedly much loved by some of the very same people who want nothing to do with his latest effort) may have specific viewpoints, but they're not doctrinaire: I think it's extremely possible for Brokeback Mountain to speak as strongly to conservative Christians as it does to gay activists. Keep in mind that the tragedy of Ennis's and Jack's long-running, clandestine affair extends to their wives and loved ones, and that nobody in the movie is patronized or caricatured. (Jack's wife, played by Anne Hathaway as a different kind of "princess" than she did in a pair of Disney movies, comes closest, but this is negated in a poignant, self-aware monologue near the end; Michelle Williams and Linda Cardellini as women in Ennis's life are simply heartbreaking.) It can also be argued that ranch boss Joe Aguirre (Randy Quaid), who hired Ennis and Jack to protect grazing sheep from wolf attacks, fires them not only because of their affair, but because they weren't doing their job--and that if the two cowboys had actually followed their hearts once down from Brokeback, Ennis's terrific, immensely sympathetic daughter (Kate Mara) would never have existed. Brokeback Mountain works superbly not only as an offbeat love story but as a powerful meditation of how entire lives are permanently altered by one impulsive action. Robert Frost's famous poem "The Road Not Taken" comes to mind not just in light of what would've happened if Jack and Ennis had become full-time lovers, but alternately (and in light of the turns everybody's lives end up taking) what the results would've been if the two guys hadn't reacted to boredom, loneliness, horniness and That Indescribable Something Else...and each of them had stayed on his side of the tent. I left the theatre a bit underwhelmed despite the FANTASTIC cinematography and scenery (I grew up in the Rocky Mountain west, and it made me incredibly homesick). The reason I was underwhelmed was probably because the film is so understated: at times I found myself doubting what Jack and Ennis saw in each other, or if, indeed, any of the characters had much passion for anything at all. In hindsight, all the little things that have sat in my mind add up -- statements like "We've got no reins on this one" and "How do I quit you?" (paraphrasing); the quiet and wholly affecting despair of the wives, Ennis' in particular; etc. And in fact, part of the theme is precisely about living a life with the passion leached out of it -- which not only Jack and Ennis were forced to do, but their wives and even, apparently, Jack's parents; grinding poverty can be limiting just as homophobia can. For such a mild-seeming film (on the surface), it wrestles with the deepest emotions amazingly well -- despair and pain and passion and love and hope and fear. And, mostly, it's just about a society that warps everyone trapped in it, with characters that you sympathize with totally even as you want to scream at them and the situation they are stuck in. You can only watch, heart pounding, as the movie veers towards its inevitable conclusion. It's definitely a good movie on first viewing, but becomes truly great in the emotional resonances it sets up long after you left the theatre. Expand

For those who think the movie For those who think the movie is "slow" or "boring", I suggest that you stop hitting the next button on your iPod and try reading a book or doing something that may force you to actually use some patience. For those who think the movie wouldn't be praised "if the love story was about a man and a woman", you're completely missing the point. There are similarities, but major differences/consequences/reactions/problems between gay and straight relationships. For those who thought Jack & Ennis were "selfish" and that the film ignored how they hurt the women in their lives by ... did you even see the film? Did you not see Michelle Williams in tears, talking about how she knew Ennis never went fishing? Did you not see Linda Cardellini in tears, telling Ennis that "girls don't fall in love with fun"? The movie deals with the hurt the women end up with. Ennis and Jack's love can't be expressed because of the stigma of being gay where they are and the circumstances of their lives. A heartbreaking tale of love denied, made all the more poignant with Ledger's passing. Stick it with it past the deliberate opening 1/2 hour, and the final emotional impact packs a whallop.

Although I think this movie starts out slow, it captures the loneliness of two men caught in a world that will not accept their love. It leaves you feeling strangely haunted and sad at the end.

Another masterful work of his that comes to mind is "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon." There a yet unknown Ziyi Zhang was forced into a marriage because of her social status. Here Mr. Lee uses two gay cowboys in 1960s west to show the backdrops and tragedy that is forbidden love. It is based off of Annie Proulx's 1997 short story with the same title. Proulx's short story was quite a bit better. It allowed the reader to fully comprehend the pain and angst of these two men, something not even film geniuses, such as Larry McMurty, may have fully brought to the screen. The best example I can use to illustate this point is when the two men hit rock bottom. In her novella, a mere fifty-five pages, these men enjoy each others' company on a camping trip, wherein the film you only see the aftermath of this trip. Of course it is hard story to adapt to the screen, but an important one, and the performance Heath Ledger brings to his character, Ennis del Mar, is brilliantly subtle and highly nuanced. Jake Gyllenhaal, Anne Hathaway, Michelle Williams, and Linda Cardeliini all give beautiful performances that will make interested viewers ache. A beautiful film that is also an important one. I recommend it to all. A- Expand

Heath Ledger and Jake Gylenhaal, giving two of the year's best performances that are way beyond anything they have ever done, are both overwhelmng and heartbreaking as they try to come to terms with the hand that life has dealt them. Because in doing so, they cause havoc to those who love them as well as to themselves, they do not emerge as heroic figures, but all too human ones. The It would be impossible to go see this movie without knowing it is the "Gay Cowboy" movie, all the pre-release media blitz has made that obviously clear to everyone on the planet and beyond, that's o.k., it's good for business. The genius of this film, however, is that after 15 minutes it becomes a plain & simple love story about wanting and longing between two people who can't be together for their own reasons, be it denial or fear or even shame. Everything about this film is extraordinary! Rodrigo Prieto's camera work is epic, the simple guitar score is haunting and the acting, oh my the acting. Michelle Williams gives the same small, understated performance that won an Oscar for Beatrice Straight in Network, Jake Gyllenhaal, on the heels of Jarhead and Proof, shows enough talent here to make him not only an a-list actor but an Oscar nominee as well. But the true find of Brokeback Mountain is none other than teen heartthrob Heath Ledger, who gives a performance so achingly beautiful I really think he will give Philip Seymour Hoffman a run for this years Best Actor Oscar! He emerges from this film the way Johnny Depp did in Ed Wood. Its simply a miraculous piece of work. The only reason I did not give this film a 10 is the last 15 minutes of the film. When Jack gets the postcard returned to him, it might as well have been stamped "Wrap It Up" Other than that, it's as near a masterpiece as it can be and, to me, seems unbeatable for the Best Picture and Best Director Oscar come March. Bravo, Mr. Lee!! Expand

The slow unfolding of the film, i found, offers the viewer to really get lost within the storyline, and I was pleased that the near nonexistant sex scenes did not isolate the viewer to any serious degree. How anyone could have left the cinema untouched is simply beyond me. I saw it again the very next day to crosscheck my viewpoint. aside from very minor unexplained moments in the film, I would concider it near perfect. Expand

The movie is a sad one because the love of the main characters is forbidden and takes place outside their marriages. I would consider this a call to acceptance. If their relationship was accepted there would be no infidelity. As for the "hate crime scene" at the end... do you really think that life treats everyone fair.
I would call this movie a fair depiction of LIFE. Not every stroy end "happily ever after."

Not much action, but the acting was great. And then you wake up the next morning with the guitar of the soundtrack in your head as you shake off a night's sleep. And a pervasive sense of desolation pervades your day. And you keep seeing this shirt. And maybe, if it's been a rough day, you'll have a few moments where you need some alone time. This is a movie that burrows into the places where you keep your regrets, missed opportunities, losses... your woulda-coulda-shouldas and quietly expands the space to bursting. It stays with you and flavors your week. It breaks your heart. Ledger gives a performance I've rarely seen and didn't expect. The direction and cinematography are stunning. And the story, spare and minimalist, overwhelms, almost as much by what is left unsaid. Perfect movie? Nah. Iconic gay movie? Since seeing it I have looked into giving to the Matthew Shepard Foundation (the gay student who was killed in Laramie in 98). But it was not the film itself that moved me - it was the story. The exception to that for me was Heath Ledger's acting. He did more than what Ms Proulx's story could do - show on the big screen the face, body and emotions of a man showing all his colors: of rage, restraint, love and grief. Expand

Not brilliant but good. An honest film if a bit dragged out. Heath Ledger's speech sometimes very hard to understand.

Not what you'd expect from reading the reviews. Great cinematography, relationship based on sex, not necessarily love. Engaging film nonetheless.

Not a love story as advertised, drags a bit, relationship of gay men is sterotypical and no new insigts are available.

I didn't feel much chemistry, bonding, or even lust between the two cowboys. Perhaps that would have been too much for mainstream America. But I give it a 8 because it is groundbreaking and better movies about same sex love will come. To those who gave it a low score because it was "sick" and "disgusting" - don't you get it? You today are the Southern racists of yesterday. Wake up! Expand

Overall a good movie. For those with open minds, the movie offers a lot to think about. As I read the reviews below, I couldn't help but think the following.....for those saying if the movie wasn't about "gay" cowboys itOverall a good movie. For those with open minds, the movie offers a lot to think about. As I read the reviews below, I couldn't help but think the following.....for those saying if the movie wasn't about "gay" cowboys it wouldn't be acclaimed is like saying if Titanic wasn't about a ship sinking it wouldn't have been such a success. For the obvious Christians who slammed the movie because of its content (yes, I am a straight male Christian with a family), this movie offered great insight into those who are different than most of us and how those people are affected by the intolerence of the rest of us. Before you praise Christians so much remember...the guys at the end who murdered Jack probably called themselves Christians.

Good insightful movie. If you keep an open mind you'll learn. If you don't keep an open mind, don't bother seeing it and go see Hostel (you won't have a problem with that movie).

It wasn't until this movie was over and I realized Ang Lee directed the film that I understand just how much directing must have gone into the character development of this film. This film draws you into the lives of Ennis and Jack It wasn't until this movie was over and I realized Ang Lee directed the film that I understand just how much directing must have gone into the character development of this film. This film draws you into the lives of Ennis and Jack within minutes. Following the story through this film, it's easy to see why it has gotten so much hype. The topic is controversial - a love and bond that can't ever fully be enjoyed because of the stigma of gay love especially dating as far back as their relationship began (1963). My heart ached during this film because Lee forced me to empathize for characters I may not have normally been able to. Expand

I went into this movie not knowing anything about it, but came out feeling so emotionally moved. The scenery was remarkable. The actors portrayed their characters so well. It was not a "gay" movie at all, it was a masculine driven love story.
