Okay I never thought the movie was that bad in fact I actually liked it as I thought it was pretty good. Yes it has problems but still.

It’s perhaps one of the more serious and dialogue-heavy entries of the Marvel Cinematic Universe but Scarlett Johansson, Florence Pugh, David Harbour and Rachel Weisz bear a convincing enough dynamic and carry a straightforward spy narrative with decent emotional depth. Per the Marvel norm, the action delivers plentiful fast-paced thrills and the film isn’t short of comedic relief, often poking fun at old Marvel character tropes and allowing David Harbor to get absolutely lost in his role; he’s rather delightful and I hope to see more of him in later media. The villains are pretty forgettable, though, and I felt the relationship between the four main characters was a tad lacking. The first 15 minutes set an interesting and almost artful standard that hooked me immediately but it pretty much goes the formulaic comic book movie route after that point and it’s…good; I got to fully understand Natasha and receive some closure on her story, though I can’t help but note the missed opportunities. I think more flashbacks like the prologue would’ve helped cement an even stronger chemistry amongst the leads. We mostly just get a general idea of how they’re associated and then it’s your typical Marvel fare but it’s the performances overall that kept me invested. Black Widow may be far from top tier MCU but it’s a solid showcase that great acting can exist in superhero media, which is a notion that has long been doubted and dismissed. Expand

Well, I think it lived up to its hype and finally, Black Widow got a satisfactory movie and a kind of back story in an all 'family' way.

The story is about how Natasha running from the S.H.I.E.L.D after the Sokovian Accords deal, the fun fact is most of the movie takes place between the airport fight and escaping the raft scene in the Civil War. The movie doesn't linearly focus solely on the character Black Widow but also on the introduction of several characters and how it lays the foundation for the next phase. The family saga was very good at the beginning and they all had very good chemistry and the comedic relief was brilliant. The antagonist was like always the cliche MCU one where he has the picture of destroying the whole world and pocket it, the problem was the power of the antagonist was let down in a weird way. Had an okayish ending and a satisfactory post-credit scene.

I was really impressed with the directing, the acting was just superb(special mention to Pugh and Harbour), the comedy was spot on, and really great opening credits. The storyline was kinda flat and predictable but loved all the Easter Eggs and a good movie for all MCU fans.

Florence Pugh is great, I hope we see more of her. I thought they could have made more of the Taskmaster, a villain with lots of potential that never really got to develop. But definitely worth a watch. I was glad to be back in the cinemas again, so much more atmosphere than streaming at home. Expand

In fact, there's not much *in* the movie at all that anyone should be considered at fault for. The narrative is solidly constructed, with decently affecting emotionality and some engaging elements of moral intrigue layered throughout. The performances vary from generally convincing to downright scene-stealing, with Florence Pugh and David Harbour representing the film's two main standouts. Even the action and set pieces are enthrallingly well-put-together. So, tell me - where the hell was this movie five, even ten years ago? Why now? After what we already know happens to the central character in question, why have a solo outing *now*? Would have almost stung less if this movie were just downright bad. At least at that point the whole idea of a solo Black Widow movie would seem to have been a bust. But, no. This is actually solid in every department except the intangible ones. The meaning behind any of what you're seeing on screen is simply all over the place. It's a damn shame, but an entertaining one, to be sure. Expand

For a viewer, who takes the amalgamated approach of MCU phase movies and Disney plus streaming series, this movie should have benefitted from an ideal placement during the phase 3 progress. A Captain Marvel movie predated its release. The action, humor and drama are scintillating enough to bring viewers to the edge of their seats. The characters are neatly done and stays as the USP throughout. The experience would have been even greater, if the last act wasn't riddled with messy sequences. That dragged the experience down for my the movie, giving similar vibes like Iron Man 3 and Age of Ultron. A pass, otherwise. 6.75/10 Expand

The only scene that really irked me was the 'fight' between the sisters when they first met again after many years, as adults. WTF was that about? That made NO sense. All in all worth the price of entry though. Expand

As far as MCU entries go, I'm just gonna straight up say that this is pretty much middle of the road territory. The stakes never felt especially high and this felt more like just a fun filler entry. As far as performances go, Johansson delivers with great action and a headstrong performance, but for me it was Florence Pugh as her younger sister that stole the show. She had plenty of humorous comic relief moments and one-liners throughout and also got to shine in some great action sequences of her own. David Harbour and Rachel Weisz are also worth mentioning as their parents, who both deliver some great scenes and moments alongside each other. Overall though, the cast and action sequences make things enjoyable and worthwhile enough to make up for a generic and straightforward story, and there's certainly been weaker MCU entries. Stick around till the very end of the credits for that trademark MCU end-credits scene. Expand

With some fixes, improvements and the iron out of some weaknesses I can see this becoming a masterpiece. To clarify this: A lot of things work in the movie but there are also some inconsistencies, things that work only because of the actors good chemistry (instead of the script) and there are a few things that should be shown better or more in details to be more believable (I avoid spoilers here so sorry for this cryptic description). It sounds to negative as for itself it is a good final movie for Black Widow and Scarlett Johansson even if I wished more for her final movie appearance. With the lawsuit from her against Disney they will hardly ever give her another role. With this her best movie is Captain America Winter Soldier. There she had a big role, you learned a lot about her and the movie itself was one of the best in the MCU. But lets go back to this movie. The movie is set after the events of Captain America Civil War and the enactment of the Sokovia Accords but before Infinity War. Natasha Romanoff is on the run because of the climax of Civil War. She is hunted by Thaddeus Ross as he took this personal and is obsessed. However everyone who knows her skills, experience and determination will know that this will just be humiliating for him (I don't think he has a snowballs chance in hell except she decided to let him caught her willingly). Story: After a flashback to the past which is nicely done and shows a lot of the characters baggage, motivation and connections we switch to the present. Like I said Natasha is on the run and will lay low for a time. This is where her past caught up to her as a seemingly unimportant package at her hideout and a mysterious person that wants to get this start the events of the movie. This will be a roller coaster ride with her past, emotions and former patch work family. The story mostly works but they a few mistakes. They have a few weak moments in the script, do not follow the show don't tell rule in a key past event and there are also things in the script you should not think to much about. However it is solid, enjoyable and hits more than it misses. A bit more polish and I see this easily at a 9/10 or higher. A warning is fair that others see this much more critical as I did. The characters are the strength of the movie and a lot of my praise comes from them. Of cause there is Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow aka Fanny Longbottom ;-). As expected you get a strong performance and also see more of the person behind her facade or should I say Black Widow persona. This was before just teased or sparingly done. I want to praise Ever Anderson as young Natasha. Even with a smaller role she impressed me. Florence Pugh as Yelema Belova is the co star and really good. I want to see more of her and lets see if she becomes the new Black Widow after the events of Endgame. My favorite new character is David Harbour as Red Guardian. Such a great performance and such an enjoyable character. A bad ass and comic relive in a way that non harms the other. Rachel Weisz as Melina Vostokoff is mysterious and amazing. Those have such a good chemistry that it is convenient enough to overlook a few things. Now to the bad guys. Ray Winston is an antagonist I want to see more. His schemes, ideas and influence is frightening. The past were MCU movies had weak villains is far gone now. His chief henchman however which I can spoil is mixed. On paper I love the idea and it should work amazingly well. Sadly it does not work as expected. Again it is not garbage but also not awesome. I must warn you that this is another point other see far more negative. The other side roles are well done and I like the post credit scene and potential they created. Maybe continued in the Hawkeye series. As per MCU standards they have great special effects. I even would say this statement is a waste of space as no MCU movie failed in that regard except maybe a few smaller weaknesses in overall great performances. The fights are well choreographed but since I saw Shang Chi cant hold up against it and also Captain America Winter Soldier. The soundtrack is fine and uses some classics like “Cheap Thrills” and “Smells like Teen Spirits”. Lastly I say the humor works well. Overall this is a movie I hate to give a lower rating. What it does works and it is entertaining. However some weaknesses drag the rating down. I deeply enjoyed the characters and patch work family. Expand

Though Pugh and Johansson don’t get much to always do. Other than talk about daddy issues or how crappy their childhoods were.
While Taskmaster is wasted and should have been a main villain in a Captain America film or even on Falcon and Winter Soldier. They just shouldn’t have used that name at all in this movie.
This film was supposed to set the return of the Marvel universe last year. It was delayed due to Covid. Shows like Wandavision, Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Loki are better. They also make us more excited for what’s next than this movie does.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The first 2/3 were pretty good especially the beginning of the movie, but it started to fall apart as the 3rd part began. Some of the fight scenes were gritty and awesome while others had a ton of cuts and looked kinda sloppy. Yelena and red guardian were a little too funny for what seemed like a pretty serious movie. Some chi towards the end looked a little silly and there were a lot of skips and rushing to get through the plot I felt. Overall a fun movie but it kinda felt like a knock off winter soldier which is okay but it could've been a better send off for such a great character. Expand

I was entertained. I didn't feel like Natasha was a sidekick to her sister, in her own movie. Perhaps people are just unfamiliar with the concept of character development, now?

There were a few ridiculous things in this movie that I did not like, such as the revelation of who Taskmaster was (and the character design), plus the emasculation of Red Guardian, but overall, it was a highly entertaining flick, and you could connect with the two leads (ScarJo & Pugh).

It was fun and I enjoyed it. You ignore the bad and take it for what it is (a Superhero/action movie) and you'll enjoy it. It was certainly far better than Captain Marvel.

It does not deserve as much hate as it's gotten in some circles, and actually the user reviews appear to reflect that.

What we got is a middling Marvel effort with a rehashed spy thriller story and its affiliated action set-pieces and plot clichés. Granted, that very spy flavour that bleeds into each act more and more evidently endows us with a couple of slick action sequences that are pulled off with aplomb. It's just unfortunate all of them are devoid of the slightest tension. While on the subject, there's no real sense of danger I feel each time either Natasha or Yelena are supposedly at risk, and The Taskmaster completely fails to prove an imposing threat, that's not to mention it's a villain that's clearly merely skimmed over, with the result of falling victim to the plot's mishmash of clichés. The humour isn't the worst, largely due to Pugh and Harbour whose chemistry elevates each scene they share a great deal. The third act feels the most superhero-y, with a fair share of explosions and CGI-heavy scenes that almost feel incongruous with the relatively small-scope MCU installment Black Widow aims to be. However, It's also here when we get some emotionally-charged moments where Pugh — yup, once again — and Scarlett get there moments to shine, serving a fitting send-off for our titular superhero. Moreover, all of these shortcomings can be tolerated given the joy one gets out of this movie. I was surprised how much time flew by minutes before reaching its post-credit scene that got me really pumped up to see what's coming next. Expand

it kind of sucks that this is the movie they made for her, it feel like they just wanted to introduce new characters into the franchise and they used her film to do so. the action scenes and performances are great but black widow deserves better than this.

overall still a pretty good action film. not the beacon of of light for female led films in the MCU but nonetheless still a good addition to the franchise.

p.s. taskmaster was a really big let down and ray winston was comically bad. i think he was supposed to be a " men with power " are evil type of character but the message was way to heavy handed.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I really enjoyed seeing Natasha Romanoff again. The film just throws around with action, but also knows how to allow for quieter moments. So I felt this "family" constellation really strong. In particular, the father (David Harbor) was able to cause some laughs. The repeated references to the Avengers were very amusing. Florence Pugh also plays a good role here, and in general I really liked it as an actor.

All of this about Natasha's past was interesting and the station at the end was very impressive. In general, the film has quite a few changes of scenery and never gets boring. I have to say, however, that the action was way too exaggerated at times. "Way over the top". I also have to criticize the intro, it was just too long and a very annoying introduction to a film (I've hardly seen it like this before).

The film asks a few questions or doesn't really answer them. I wanted a bit more content.

The film reminded me of Mission: Impossible and I found it really good in its last offshoot. Black Widow 7/10 spiders.
I like e.g. better than the Captain Marvel movie.

That's exactly what we have before us this weekend folks. The long-awaited released of Marvel and pandemic delayed, Black Widow - of course, starring the beautiful, Scarlett Johansson (Yost?) as the beloved, turncoat super spy/assassin Natasha Romanoff a.k.a. Black Widow. This film follows Natasha after Civil War but prior to Infinity War. We all wondered what occurred with her in that time to be with Captain and Sam and now we know. She went on a blast-from-the-past trip to clear her ledger of red. Let's see if this film really was needed in the MCU universe.

I'll put it like this, Endgame gave Natasha one of the most heartfelt, poignant, sincere and redeeming ends a hero could ever ask for. This Black Widow film finds a way to undo that and just rehash the wounds of her impending doom. In reality, this movie deserved to be made prior to Infinity War and Marvel really screwed the pooch by letting this linger. The story itself could've been set in between any of the movies, particularly after Iron Man 2. In fact, this movie feels like a sequel rather than an "origin story", which in a way only enhances my feeling of what if they truly appreciated a strong female spy lead in the Marvel universe. With that said, the viewer feels like they've been thrown inside a moving bus and don't know where they are headed because it's so out of place in the MCU timeline, including the TV shows. Marvel really just missed out on capitalizing on what is otherwise a solid movie by having it released outside of the first 4 phases of the universe.

Nevertheless, Black Window on it's own is a very solid movie. The biggest knock of the movie has to be it's too long for a movie that really isn't going anywhere. We all know from Endgame that she's gone but is she gone forever? We hope not. Either way, there's a ton of dialogue and almost too little action when considering the more than two hour runtime. Nevertheless, the dialogue is clever, funny at times, and endearing as well. In fact, that sums up the movie from beginning to end. From the backstory we learn to the unrequited love at the end, Black Widow works. The cast is very strong, even Pugh with what seems like a terrible accent at times. I think viewers will want to see more of these characters and judging by the movie talks and the post credit scene, they will be obliged. On top of that, the viewer will be entertained by the typical action. We've all gotten used to the big explosions, the chases, and fight scenes. Black Widow certainly isn't lacking for any of these things particularly with the addition of Taskmaster, which I would've wanted more from.

Ultimately, Black Widow is a good story that is too late for the franchise. Even if this movie came out during the pandemic, the film was too late in the grand scheme of things. This ultimately hurts the movies rating overall. The film more rehashes old wounds than gives a beloved character a just due, like she received in Endgame. Everyone should definitely check this film out for the matinee price and you absolutely won't go wrong once the film hits Disney+ without the premium price. So grab your bowl of popcorn and watch Black Widow and family handle some business.

The action is over the top and bogged by cgi. All the villains are immediately forgettable. And the humor is a constant hit or miss. All said, this movie does have an emotional core with the family that sustains in scenes throughout. Dan Harmon and Florence Pugh act very well and bring a lot of charm in the movie. Would recommend but don't have high expectations for Marvel's long overdue solo film. Expand

I was worried that after the success of Avengers, Marvel would have a hard time picking up the thread and just not rise to that quality. Ono as of course it didn't even climb here and Black Widow is one of the "weaker" pieces, but in my opinion it has nothing to be ashamed of at all. Black Widow offered us a story before the events of Infinity War and it fits in beautifully, plus it brings us closer to the character himself and in my opinion it works a treat. I found the intro of the film almost masterful. Now I apologize for the slight exaggeration, but I just loved it madly. Throw in some classic action scenes, which Marvel has really honed over the years and just knows how to do. I liked the music a hell of a lot. There was still a quirk here and there, as is the Marvel way. I also have to give a shout out to Task Master, where there was a minor revelation that I wasn't expecting. Summa summarum for me this is a good film that once again got me into going to the cinema to see superhero movies and of course I recommend it to Marvel fans. Expand

The film is very grounded, it has moments of a good drama film, dialogues are good as well as characters and acting. I can't say this was something groundbreaking but this feels like a first iron man for me. The almost all-female cast feels natural and not cringey and very enjoyable, Take notes studios, Recommend watching this film.

A belated stand alone movie for one of the more intriguing Avengers. While not outstanding it is a solid enough entry into the MCU.
Could easily see a spin-off series for David Harbour and his Red Guardian character if Disney is true to form.

The most overdue MCU movie of all hit the screens today, with Scarlett Johansson finally getting her standalone film in the terrific 'Black Widow'.

In the aftermath of the events of Captain America: Civil War, we catch our favorite femme fatale on the run and facing enemies old and new with both the US government and the Russian Red Room on her tail.

Florence Pugh is introduced as the heir-apparent to the seemingly irreplaceable Natasha Romanoff, but carries herself with grace, poise and immense likeability. Her chemistry with Johansson is electric and makes you buy into the sisters' journey and shared pain easily.

David Harbour is incredible as the 'Red Guardian'', the weathered the former Russian counterpart to Captain America. Rachel Weisz and him are spot on as the parental figures, essaying the pain and suffering they have undergone with authenticity and realism. Ray Winstone is his icy, brutish best as the main antagonist.

The key standout element of the film was the excellently choreographed hand-to-hand combat sequences, really raising the level of Marvel movies to Bourne-esque realms.

Watch out for not one but two surprise guest appearances that not only tie into the upcoming MCU films but also continue the intricate world-building happening through the Disney+ series' Loki, TFATWS and Wanda Vision.

Black Widow is a Natasha Romanoff show through and through, a fitting tribute to a founding Avenger and a role that has been portrayed with such perfection by Scarlett Johansson for over a decade now.

Highly recommended! Marvel's first movie of 2021 is a surefire blockbuster!

it kind of sucks that this is the movie they made for her, it feel like they just wanted to introduce new characters into the franchise and they used her film to do so. the action scenes and performances are great but black widow deserves better than this.

overall still a pretty good action film. not the beacon of of light for female led films in the MCU but nonetheless still a good addition to the franchise.

p.s. taskmaster was a really big let down and ray winston was comically bad. i think he was supposed to be a " men with power " are evil type of character but the message was way to heavy handed.

I've seen Black Widow twice now and although I enjoy the film I'm struggling where to rank it within the MCU. The plot is part origin story and part backstory filling in a large gap between Civil War and Avengers Infinity War. Black Widow gets information to indicate that the Red Room (the program which turned her into a Russian assassin) is still operating, so she recruits her old "family" to assist her in taking it down. The film feels similar in tone to Captain American The Winder Soldier as it's more serious and slightly dark. There is barely a slow moment with back to back fight scenes and the occasional comedic relief but that is also its weakness, as their isn't much time to flesh out a truely meaningful story. The film starts really well but the main bad guy, Dreykov, is pretty generic and has some bad dialouge which is bordering on cheesy. The movies ending isn't as crazy as other MCU movie endings but it's still very over the top and I wasn't that big of a fan of it. The actual movie itself seems a bit late late to the party, we already know Black Widow is going to live so there was no sense of danger for her character and it didn't quite seem like a positive send off for her either... it felt very displaced. In saying all of that though, it's still an exciting film and it has some genuinely funny commentary throughout on the MCU and specifically Black Widows journey within it. The one thing I am dissapointed about is the portrayal of Taskmaster... an interesting character in the comics and premise alone but ruined in this movie in MY opinion.

My main gripe is that it has no rewatch ability. Some movies leave little bread crumbs as to who the final boss is, or where the evil layer is located, but this movie just dances around the unknowns until they eventually plop or down right in front of you. I would have rated this a 4 star, as it honestly wasn't bad(and especially not as bad as a lot of the 1 star reviews are saying it is), but they changed my favorite marvel villain (the task master) into a female who's abilities are only due to a chip in her head. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Scarlett Johansson returns as the kickass redhead, but not before we flashback to meet her family (David Harbour & Rachel Weisz as parents and Florence Pugh as her sister). Jump forward to her adult iteration, as she fights to (wait for it) save the world. There are expected action beats throughout, most of them noisy, but lacking much new in approach or wow factor. What slows down the pace is the preponderance of family drama that attempts to add emotional resonance. Harbour, as the failed Red Guardian, provides a few lighter moments. The short review: It has some fresh insights, is funny at places, but is inconsequential to the MCU. Better than Captain Marvel though!

Related media: I am reviewing this film after having seen all previous MCU films.

What's it like?: This tells the story of Black Widow after the events of Captain America: Civil War (CA:CW). She is now wanted by Secretary Ross, and ended up meeting up with her original 'family'.

Mid- or post-credit scenes: One post-credit scene.

Positive: It's better than Captain Marvel...?

Negatives: 1. This film's storyline is mostly inconsequential to what happens after CA:CW.
2. The villains' HQ is ridiculous and unrealistic physics-wise.
3. The arch villain is of the MCU-cliched throw-away kind. How would the different age groups rate it?

Children:Poor; Teens:Poor; Young adults:Average; Medium-age adults:Average; Old adults:Poor.

Rating: 3/5 (no half scores). Skip it. Save your money and watch it on TV.

If we take into account the eagerness that existed in a large part of the global audiences to see a new Marvel movie, I must say that Black Widow is very late to the party.

And the truth is that I'm not talking about the delays it suffered due to the pandemic, but because this is the first movie that openly does not contribute anything to the MCU.

I could make a similar case for Iron Man 3, but by now it's irrelevant.

Black Widow is Scarlett Johansson's swan song.
A belated farewell, and at the same time completely useless.

I say this more than anything because I personally believe the actress deserved a much more dignified farewell than the one she received in Avengers: Endgame.
Certainly going back to the past in this movie gives her character a marked undertone, but it's one that no longer works because her character is dead.

And even worse for Johansson, her last participation in the MCU becomes the launch of the young woman who comes to replace her, and take the mantle of her character.

Another point that I must emphasize, and that in my view Black Widow aggravates, is how the MCU is separating and becoming two very different entities.

In the comic book it works because you can tell different stories from different perspectives, but in the movies it will be very difficult to re-converge the lesser characters with the more powerful as the scale of events continues to increase.

Marvel is targeting the cosmic side of its universe, and as it does so, it's also opening the doors of the multiverse.
Just by seeing the events of WandaVision and Loki this is more than clear.
Much more powerful enemies and worlds are approaching, and frankly characters like the new Captain America, the Winter Soldier, U.S. Agent, and a new Black Widow simply aren't up to the task of competing on that scale.
Does anyone remember what Hawkeye was doing in the final battle of Avengers: Endgame? I mean, it's not that hard to see.

Black Widow has the well-known Marvel formula, and entertaining yourself with it for a while is not bad at all, but I can't deny that this time it feels wearisome because there is nothing at stake.
Whatever others say, this was just Florence Pugh's introduction.

Perhaps due to Scarlett Johansson's level of stardom, she got a movie for her character, but this could have been a Disney + show and there would've been no problem.

What is more jarring that this came out after Endgame which concluded her story. Nevertheless, it is here and I was still kind of hype for it despite it all. So is this another MCU hit or a miss?

Firstly, the supporting cast is all stellar. David Harbour as Red Guardian was hilarious and he was incredibly charming even if his character was kind of an ass. Rachel Weisz was also great as Melina, the fake mother of Natasha, as she gives a performance that conveys the conflict her character is going through yet also being quite lovable. Florence Pugh as Yelena, Natasha's sister, is the true stand out in this film. Her performance is so charismatic and charming while also being a proper badass. Her character has the most vulnerability compared to everyone else and Florence's shows this by really delivering on the emotional performance. She also has great chemistry with Scarlett Johansson so the interaction between Yelena and Natasha are some of the biggest highlights of Black Widow. Scarlett is also still phenomenal as Natasha and she still delivers here as well. We get to see more emotion from her character which allows Scarlett to do a lot more and shine in these scenes. The music score is composed by legendary composer Lorne Balfe and he continues to make another amazing score for Black Widow. Every action scene feels more hype whenever his score is being blasted and it's just awesome. The emotional scenes become more emotional and the tense scenes become more tense thanks to his score. I also really love the action scenes, for the most part. The hand-to-hand fights felt gritty and brutal which made it very entertaining to watch. There is also a pretty cool car chase and a fight where Black Widow has to fight countless other Red Room assassins which were very enjoyable as well. However, the story is quite a mixed bag for me thanks to how it is executed. The movie does a lot of telling of her past rather than showing which is kind of disappointing. I think seeing the red ledger stuff she did as a Red Room assassin would've given the ending more impact. Additionally, Black Widow explores the theme of family but handles it quite poorly. Natasha confronting her fake family is emotional stuff and the movie does show it but it would then deflect it with a silly joke which did get annoying. This is terrible when it came to the dad, Red Guardian. The movie treats him like a joke even though he did an incredibly terrible thing that caused his fake daughters to dislike him. There is a moment where he does start trying to repair his relationship with his daughters which was very sweet but the story doesn't stay long enough on this. He also doesn't get a moment to show how much he cares for his daughter which disappointed me. I did have my issue with how jokes are used in MCU movies but I think it is more annoying here than it is in previous MCU movies. The story is also very low stakes and because of Endgame, there doesn't feel like there is much danger to our main characters.

The action scenes near the end are quite disappointing as well. There is a fight between the Red Guardian and Taskmaster which sounds on paper cool as both have some kind of superpower. However, the editing had lots of cuts with also constantly cutting away to something else which made it jarring. Additionally, Red Guardian, despite having super strength, never gets to show this in the fight. There is also a final fight between Black Widow and Taskmaster at the end which is mostly a CGI fest but is also incredibly short as well. It was a disappointing final fight for sure. On that note, the villains in Black Widow are also very disappointing. Dreykov, the leader of the Red Room, doesn't even have much of a presence on the plot until 40 minutes in. Even when they start appearing, they still have no presence as the plot is more focused on getting the family together than villains doing something. Taskmaster may be the most disappointing villain in MCU history. They are such a deviation from the comic as Taskmaster never speaks ever. There is also a reveal about Taskmaster that is just lame. Overall, Black Widow is a movie I feel so incredibly conflicted about. The story and villains are quite poor but there are moments in it that are very good. The characters and performances by actors are all great but some characters don't get enough to shine. The action scenes are entertaining but it does stumble near the end. Black Widow is a movie with a lot of good that contains some bumps throughout. In the end, I am glad it finally came out and I enjoyed watching it even though it does feel a bit too late.

I wish MCU would let some heavy moments land instead of undercutting them with jokes. It'd give the world more weight.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. 6.5 out of 10. The opening scenes through the opening credits were all fantastic. The entire movie was entertaining, albeit formulaic. The fight choreography was a return to form after the abysmal choreography in Falcon and Winter Soldier. David Harbour and Florence Pugh steal the show. Rachel Weisz didn't get enough screen time but she was effective in every scene she was in. Taskmaster was an intimidating villain. Taskmaster's reveal was incredibly predictable, but that's not necessarily a bad thing (I had an old Lit teacher who once said that truly unpredictable twists are a sign of bad/lazy writing). Only major cons were one bit about the third act and that Ray Winstone was a forgettable and unintimidating villain. I'm not one to complain about a climactic/fantastical third act. However, pulling a parachute whilst debris is falling all around you would have almost definitely led to Yelena's death. Either her parachute would have been compromised and she'd have fallen to her death or she'd have been crushed/cut apart by the falling debris. I thought that bit was fairly lazy writing.

Even after giving the movie a 6.5, I think this movie was solid but ultimately wasted potential. Rather than telling a story that links Civil War's Natasha with Infinity War/End Game's Natasha - bringing closure to her character and potentially improving upon the emotional connection the audience has with her character in those films - we got a movie that seemed to focus on setting up future stories with new characters. Now for the fan fiction re-writes that nobody really cares about... Although it may seem like a bigger waste to some people, I think Melina should have truly been revealed to be a villain and died in the final act, Alexei/Red Guardian should have sacrificed himself to save his "daughters" from Taskmaster, and Yelena should have been presumed dead (revealed to be alive in the end credits scene, which wouldn't have had to change) after she blew up Dreykov's aircraft. Yes, it would have been tragic. However, it would have amplified her sacrifice in End Game by emphasizing her determination to protect her "family" as well as ensuring her best friend was able to see his biological family again. Just my two cents...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Whilst I am glad the MCU has finally given its first female superhero her own solo film, Natasha Romanoff does not feel like the main character in her own story.

The film does a nice job delving into Natasha as a character, but only provides glimpses of her background - one that acts as social commentary for child trafficking, an aspect of the film brought up during the intro sequence but is otherwise largely ignored for the rest of the film. One of the bigger problems that seem consistent across all Marvel Studios productions, is how they add humor inappropriately during points of the film where it tries to deal with serious topics. In Black Widow, a saving grace is that the comedy was fairly enjoyable.

Black Widow also suffers from Marvel Studios' villain problem, where its primary antagonists are barely characters and more so plot points that exist for a conflict to occur. We learn very little about Natasha's rivals and they ultimately felt like unnecessary and uninteresting additions to the MCU.

The best aspect of the film to me was the cast. Scarlett Johansson reprises her role as Natasha Romanoff and does an excellent job in the role as usual. Joining her are Florence Pugh, Rachel Weisz, and David Harbour who make up the most enjoyable and heartfelt moments in the film.

Competent, but ultimately shallow exploration of Marvel's "Black Widow" character in a typical blockbuster fashion. It's "fine" by all accounts, but doesn't really offer anything new, relevant or interesting for Marvel fans.
