Before there were massive crossovers, intergalactic threats, and now parallel universes. A time when it was just a single hero in a relatively grounded conflict that didn't leave earth or enter another plane of existence. Heck, the title character doesn't even have powers which gives the action a Jason Bourne or Mission Impossible vibe. It's also unconcerned with throwing a constant barrage of humor at the audience making this the most tonally serious superhero movie we've received since the last time a Zack Snyder work was released in theaters.

Set not long after the events of Civil War, the plot sees Natasha Romanoff taking on a secret shadow organization with ties to her past. Not since Ant-Man and the Wasp has a Marvel flick been so self-contained and detached from moving the overall cinematic world it takes place in forward at all. As a result, it is totally skippable as you won't be missing anything in the grander story of the MCU should you choose not to watch it. Black Widow does still have value though in that it takes a hero who for years has sat alongside Hawkeye as the lamest, most out of place feeling member of The Avengers and actually provides a reason to give a crap about her. The emotional journey the former KGB agent goes on and the unique bond she shares with her supporting cast/family finally grants her a moment in the spotlight when in the past she's been little more than someone who was just sort of there and didn't really contribute much.

Not every issue with the heroine has been fixed however. I've always felt Kevin Fiege and crew have played it a little loose with the character's abilities to make up for the lack of girl power present in the "Earth's Mightiest Heroes." I understand she's a highly trained and physically fit individual, but there's nothing here that says she's expressly any more resistant to damage than you or I so seeing her walk away from moments that should have killed or at the very least seriously injured a non-superhuman with hardly a scratch is egregiously unbelievable. That combined with the fact that some of the narrative's big reveals are incredibly predictable are what keep this from achieving perfection.

Still, in an era when this franchise is focused on adapting the weirdest, wildest, and most grandiose chapters of its comic counterparts, it's nice to get something that hearkens back to the scale and scope of the first Iron Man while sporting an espionage thriller style that calls to mind The Winter Soldier. It's also the only time a director not named James Gunn has been able to make their distinctive presence felt in a MCU project. I would love to see Cate Shortland helm another entry maybe centered around Yelena Belova or, if my dreams come true, Red Guardian. So despite admittedly being a couple of films and a few miniseries behind, this is what currently has my vote as the best post-Endgame content to come out thus far.

Great fights, choreography, fun characters and well-written interactions. Really good movie. The weaker parts were the treatment of the villains and the very last act. But overall, very enjoyable - go see it in theaters!

The end result: an incredible spy thriller that should have been released many, many years ago. If it was released then, probably Scarlett Johansson would have second thoughts about leaving one of her signature roles. However, we literally have a new Widow to contend with: Florence Pugh. Wow...again, another great find by Feige and Co. Pugh has always been a great actress but sorry to say, I felt that she fit more like a glove in this universe in comparison to Johansson herself. I always felt that they always tried to fit Natasha to Scarlett's and not the other way around. Pugh on the other hand is literally born to play Yelena. Great action sequences as usual, and after three great Disney+ series, I thought that the cinematic experience for the MCU is a goner. Not anymore. When the pandemic is truly over, people will return to the cinemas to see these flicks again. Expand

Florence Pugh and David Harbour are the instant standouts as soon as they are on screen, and everytime they're absent, the movie leaves you longing for them. Some of the scenes do tip over into Fast & Furious levels of ridiculousness yet it only adds to the movie's scale. Taskmaster is relegated to a mute robot of a villain but still effective how they use him. A fantastic and dynamic family based action flick from Marvel. Easily in the top 10 of the MCU. Expand

Black Widow was a pleasant surprise for me. As a non-Marvel fan, this story was easy to follow in which the early life and origin of Black Widow are explored. The extensive action scenes and strong CGI make this film feel like a real blockbuster.

Black Widow did NOT disappoint!!

Ever since I heard the possibility of Natasha's own solo movie, I was thrilled. And knowing the release date just added to the anticipation. I know a lot of us were worried that this movie wouldn't live up to our lofty expectations, but it absolutely exceeded them!

Black Widow was amusing, intense, and entertaining. It possesses its own gritty distinctiveness while appearing to blend in well with the rest of the MCU. Scarlett Johansson then delivered an outstanding performance. It truly saddens me that this will be her final appearance on the big screen as Natasha Romanoff.  As for Florence Pugh, as Yelena, it was just chef's kiss. She gave her all to this charming character. I gonna love seeing Yelena more in the MCU. Not to mention Rachel Weisz and David Harbour. They were also fantastic on-screen, contributing to the family-like dynamic with Scarlett and Florence.

Overall, this is a film that everyone should see. It features an excellent soundtrack, CGI, and combat sequences. For the first time, I feel like I'm finally seeing a non-objectified portrayal of Natasha.

This movie should have come out numerous years ago, but at least it's out now. Fight choreography was immaculate, and the story was overall pretty solid. Florence Pugh and David Harbour were of course stand-outs, but Scarlett Johansson had several moments to shine. Those that love a good thriller should enjoy Black Widow, even though it puts in a lot of work to set up potential future MCU projects. Unlike several other MCU movies, Black Widow does a great job balancing believable humor with the more grounded and serious plot moments. The movie truly does "complete" Natasha's storyline in the MCU. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I think it’s a neat movie to tie in between civil war and infinity war and a nice tease for Hawkeye’s Disney+ series at the end credit scene. And the action scenes and acrobatics are kind of mesmerizing one of my favorite parts being the fight on the falling debris, it’s just really cool seeing people skydiving and then duking it out on falling platforms. Though it did feel aleski was just mostly comic relief and not much else, but that aside the girl gets a dog at the end like she wanted so 9/10 Expand

This movie felt like a “Captain America: Winter Soldier feel to it! Great action, good humor and more. Florence Pugh, Scarlett Johansson, David Harbour, and Rachel Weiz were great in the movie portraying their characters. They did what they need to do for me to like the characters in this movie. I’m not too familiar with the villain, Taskmaster but I will say this, I like how they did with it in the movie with a twist of their own idea because we know that, they will never follow the MCU comics but will use that as an inspiration and idea to create their own style they like to use for the villain for the story in the movie to make sense and complete. I know many fans are disappointed about it but the realization is that, they will never follow the comics and put it in the movie because of one thing I know is, many of the fans in the world maybe already read the comics for Black Widow and others marvel characters so they wouldn’t want to make a movie that the people already know the stories about from beginning to end. They try to make their version of the villain the best it can be in all their movies. I ABSOLUTELY HATE when a Marvel movies comes out, and there’s a lot of negative review for a Marvel Studios movies right away on release day…Whether it’s for Black Widow or others, because MCU comics fans expect the Marvel Studios to follow the comics for their movie for them. The team work very hard and it would be a waste of hard work if you are really not proud of them to try to make a great movie that took probably 2 years to make. But for me, since I don’t read the comics. I didn’t really care! I just go to the theater and enjoy it!! No negative reviews will stop my experience!!!! I give it 9/10 A+ Expand

+ Lorne Balfe's Soundtrack
+ The action sequences
+ Scarlett and Pugh's Acting
+ The dark tone it has lying underneath
+ Red Guardian was fun and Melina was okay
+ Good villains (not great; Taskmaster was badass and Dreykov felt like a real threat)
+ (Female) Empowerement done right Cons:
- The pacing
- The post-credit scene (while the goodbye was great, Valentina and the Hawkeye set up was a bit disappoiting considering it's the first post credit scene we get in theaters after Far From Home).
- The nods to the Avengers could be trimmed down
- Lots of characters added nothing to the plot (Ross and Mason added nothing to the overall story)
- Lots of questions to answers that could have easily been answered
- Didn't work as a Swan Song
- Taskmaster was severely underused Overall: Good and entertaining movie that kinda bugs me as the first movie in the MCU's Phase 4. Felt a bit like Iron Man 3 whereas the plot overall didn't affect the Infinity Saga and I believe this one's plot won't affect much of the MCU's new saga. But super enjoyable and fun.

Just don’t pay for it. Wait for it to be available at no extra cost in October with the subscription to Disney+. My god I’m lucky if $30 is the total cost for going to a movie theater and heaven forbid I take someone with me and get snacks. To my knowledge after you “unlock” the movie you now also have it as long as you have the service. Plus you can pause or rewind for any reason at any time. Try doing that a a theater. Now that that’s out of the way I enjoyed this movie, but with everything that “technically” should have come out after it was intended to release: Wanda Vision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, this fell a little short with pacing and story development for me. I loved her back story. I loved the “family” aspect of this, but it does feel a little late to the party with so much rich connected content coming out episodically on Disney+. There were some weird plot points that took me out of deeply enjoying this, but the acting and the actors themselves are just great. Without a doubt Red Guardian is now my favorite character in the entire MCU. David Harbour was perfect. Rachel Weisz is excellent and the rest of the cast shines including Johansson who’s portrayal of Black Widow has been somewhat dull until now. I’m not saying that’s isn’t because they didn’t give her a lot to work with in previous films, but I actually felt like there was a well rounded character being developed on screen. If you’ve seen the rest in the franchise I don’t hesitate to recommend you checking it out at your convenience. Anyone who isn’t interested in the massively expanding MCU should wait. Expand

After being delayed thrice due to COVID-19 pandemic which forced theatres around the world to close for a while, the twenty-fourth instalment in Marvel Cinematic Universe finally arrived in the big screen while the movie is also available in Disney+ for a premium fee at the same time.

Due to her betrayal in Captain America: Civil War, Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow (Johansson) became a fugitive and is currently on the run from US Secretary of State, Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross. Elsewhere, another Black Widow, Yelena Belova (Pugh), is on the mission to assassinate a rogue and former Black Widow, whom she manage to free Yelena from mind control using an antidote vial which contain synthetic gas at the cost of her own life. Freed from mind control, Yelena sends the antidote vials to Natasha at her safehouse in Norway hoping she would help.

With the vials under the possession of Natasha, she is attack by a mysterious assassin called Taskmaster (played by Olga Kurylenko), who is coming for the vials. She fights off Taskmaster and escape with the vials. She reunite with Yelena in a safehouse in Budapest, Hungary where she learn that the Red Room led by General Dreykov (played by Ray Winstone) is still active. Working together, Natasha and Yelena break their adoptive father, Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian (Harbour), out of prison in order find out Dreykov’s location so they can put an end to the Red Room once and for all.

After going through 2020 without any MCU movies, it is really good to be back watching Marvel movie once again. This movie is not exactly an origin story of Black Widow like 2008’s Iron Man but the writing in this movie did a good job in expanding Black Widow’s past after many hints in the previous movies. For example, we finally get to know what happened in Budapest after it was first mentioned in 2012’s The Avengers and the origins of the Red Room after being mentioned in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. In addition, the movie ties up all loose end on Black Widow and connects very well to 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War.

The fighting scenes are very well executed which kind of reminds me of 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier and other action thriller movies such as The Bourne series. The performance of the cast have done very well in their acting. Scarlett Johansson and Florence Pugh have done a great job in their acting. David Harbour deserved a praise too as he not only played the role of Red Guardian well, he also have done a great job in providing comic relief moments in the movie. Ray Winstone and Olga Kurylenko also done a decent performance but I felt their characters are not well developed. I felt Ray’s character is more of a generic Russian villain you watched in other Hollywood movies while Olga did not have much screentime as Taskmaster, who is a well known villain in the comics. Taskmaster shows up in the first and third act but disappeared during the middle of the second act. Other than that, the character is more depicted as a generic henchman.

Nevertheless, Black Widow is still a good movie despite the flaws. If you have missed watching Marvel movies, this is first Marvel movie you definitely want to watch in 2021. Not only that, this movie may be Scarlett Johansson’s final role as Black Widow (her character died in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame) which is another reason why you should watch this movie. Don’t forget to stay back for post credits scene as this scene sets up a future movie or TV series.

I enjoyed a down to earth story (compared to the usual saving the world plot). I was pleasantly surprised by a darker tone introduced with an opening scene/credits that set up the movie. There are some minor issues that I have with the film, like russian accent (me being fluent in russian) or me having to read english subtitles to understand what they said in Russian (like always in Hollywood movies) but most importantly this movie came too late. It should have been released at least after the first avengers. Expand

Everything you could have expected & wanted from a solo Black Widow movie. Main problem is how out of place this movie feels. It should have been released on 2017.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Great set-up and awesomely fast-paced entertaining Movie!
The pre-infinity war era and not the origin but the plot around red-room was awesome, the whole family dynamic and the relationship overall was sweet specially the reunion was amazing and the ending moments of them together was sweet, the budapest storyline was needed to be seen but it was dissapointment not to be shown although the action scenes and fights were awesome, the whole red room set-up at last was surprising and the task-master was good although she was little underused i wanted more of action and suspense but ok! Natasha's friend and tricks were brilliant, the ending was thrilling the natasha's twist and the fight in air although it was little but entertaining, the ross cameo and Natasha breaking the red-room and making way for yalena's part in future with her story connecting to infinty war at last with jet scene it was satisfying and above that the post-credits was shockingly awesome,Overall the family dyanmics were emotionally sweet and the action was mind-blowing although decent plot and the whole run time was amazingly handled with plot, refernces, humour and family stuff making it awesomely fast-paced and entertaining movie!

Black Widow is a film in which awesome action sometimes gets in the way of the plot, but considering the fact that it also has great acting and humor, it deserves a heavy recommendation.

Taking place between Civil War & Infinity War, the Widow finds herself in p[lunged into her sister’s business, played by recent Oscar nominee Florence Pugh, another former member of the Black Widows (an elite, clandestine killsquad consisting of women who have been betrayed by life in some form or another) who has been freed by a vial of red mist which breaks the choke-hold their controller, played by Ray Winstone, has on them so when Pugh gains a packet of these vials, she mails it to ScarJo’s current safehouse which activates the Taskmaster, a fighter who can mimic another’s moves (seen at first cramming her moves via TV) which Scarjo escapes w/the goods reuniting w/her long lost sister (not her actual sister or family for that matter as evidenced by the opening prologue) who both resolve to take out Winstone (w/added help from their pseudo ma & pa, played by Rachel Weisz & David Harbour) as they track down his elusive lair. A solid actioner (some have opined it feels like Captain America: The Winter Soldier lite) which feels more of an obligation than something organic still manages to entertain beside itself since the only MCU product that’s been seen has been the Disney + offerings so anything on the big black screen would be viewed almost as a rite of release than anything else. Pugh & Harvour manage to steal almost every scene they’re in while Scarjo’s cutaways have a ‘this is my family’ shrug to them but being this is essentially a sacrificial lamb for the Mouse House to see how their big performers will do in our current Covid nation, we could do worse (live-action Mulan, anyone?). William Hurt returns again playing ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross & Olga Kurylenko (from Quantum of Solace & the misbegotten big screen Max Payne) plays the Taskmaster. Expand

As a long timeI walked into this film not knowing anything about black widow or the avengers entirely, for I’ve never been a marvel fan; However this film was quite thrilling and I even saw it a second time around so here’s my verdict. As a long time cinema reviewer, action has never been my demographic but I decided to give this film a shot because I was a fan of a particular actor in the cast and I’m very glad I did. Black Widow was the perfect balance of action and comedy which many action films fail to produce leaving the audience feeling worn out. The cinematography was very captivating. Florence Pugh particularly was a highlight. She really nailed all her comedic moments while balancing out the characters journey and state. The audience I was with opening night really digged it too. The storyline it’s self was quite interesting and did what so far to many movies failed to do this year, be unpredictable. The score set such an atmosphere and I enjoyed the costuming, especially Yelena’s vest. This was the first 4DX movie I’ve seen yet and I really think it’s going to be the future of cinema. Expand
