The film spends scant time exploring the implications of these darker themes, and doesn’t attempt to understand the root of Dreykov’s god complex. Instead, it’s more comfortable in comedy mode

Marvel has made some of finest superhero movies of the 2010's, so it comes as a surprise that Black Widow feels so pointless and at times boring. A generic action film with little consequences to the MCU at large.

This movie gets the lowest possible rating for its propagandistic depiction of Russia and its citizens.

Non-US affiliated male Russians are portrayed as incompetent or cunning, calculating, cruel, corrupt, lacking sophistication etc., whereas their female counterparts are portrayed as victims (e.g. the scenes after Natasha and her sister are taken from their 'parents' being filmed in such a way as to evoke documentary footage of human trafficking and prostitution rings; the Widows being deprived of their reproductive organs by their male superiors.) And Russian prison wardens and inmates apparently do not merit rescue by our heroes after being buried underneath an avalanche.

The film-makers want it both ways - we are to believe that Russia is a backward nation with second-rate technology (note the cumbersome Russian helicopter contrasted with the sleek American Quinjet), but also one that is extremely capable at causing international strife - due to the indoctrination of its citizens, the deprivation of their individuality and free will. A 'good' Russian is thus one that hopes to escape to Ohio ('The Land of the Free') or join an American superhero taskforce.

To have all the Russian characters portrayed by Western actors is but another glaring example of the movie's dishonesty, but also helps us identify it as that which it ultimately is - propagandistic filmmaking. Black Widow exemplifies the considerable sway of the US military-entertainment complex, its ability to impose its geopolitical agenda on the MCU; but the obvious propaganda leaves the movie bereft of any artistic merit it may have otherwise possessed.

I can but humbly suggest that viewers seek out Andrey Zvyagintsev's masterful 'Loveless' for its critical, unflinching portrayal of modern-day Russia.

I'd like to add that 'feminism' and 'SJWs' aren't to blame for the movie's Russophobia. That so many users here believe this to be the case is quite worrisome, and imo proof of the efficacy of our politics of division. We should all wish (for the world) to be free of scapegoatism, oppression and double-standards.

As far as MCU entries go, I'm just gonna straight up say that this is pretty much middle of the road territory. The stakes never felt especially high and this felt more like just a fun filler entry. As far as performances go, Johansson delivers with great action and a headstrong performance, but for me it was Florence Pugh as her younger sister that stole the show. She had plenty of humorous comic relief moments and one-liners throughout and also got to shine in some great action sequences of her own. David Harbour and Rachel Weisz are also worth mentioning as their parents, who both deliver some great scenes and moments alongside each other. Overall though, the cast and action sequences make things enjoyable and worthwhile enough to make up for a generic and straightforward story, and there's certainly been weaker MCU entries. Stick around till the very end of the credits for that trademark MCU end-credits scene. Expand

Especially the little sister was really good. The villain part of the story was .. eh. Been there, done that. But there were more than a few laughs and the action is well choreographed. The only scene that really irked me was the 'fight' between the sisters when they first met again after many years, as adults. WTF was that about? That made NO sense. Black Widow did NOT disappoint!!

Ever since I heard the possibility of Natasha's own solo movie, I was thrilled. And knowing the release date just added to the anticipation. I know a lot of us were worried that this movie wouldn't live up to our lofty expectations, but it absolutely exceeded them!

Black Widow was amusing, intense, and entertaining. It possesses its own gritty distinctiveness while appearing to blend in well with the rest of the MCU. Scarlett Johansson then delivered an outstanding performance. It truly saddens me that this will be her final appearance on the big screen as Natasha Romanoff.  As for Florence Pugh, as Yelena, it was just chef's kiss. She gave her all to this charming character. I gonna love seeing Yelena more in the MCU. Not to mention Rachel Weisz and David Harbour. They were also fantastic on-screen, contributing to the family-like dynamic with Scarlett and Florence.

Overall, this is a film that everyone should see. It features an excellent soundtrack, CGI, and combat sequences. For the first time, I feel like I'm finally seeing a non-objectified portrayal of Natasha.

In fact, there's not much *in* the movie at all that anyone should be considered at fault for. The narrative is solidly constructed, with decently affecting emotionality and some engaging elements of moral intrigue layered throughout. The performances vary from generally convincing to downright scene-stealing, with Florence Pugh and David Harbour representing the film's two main standouts. Even the action and set pieces are enthrallingly well-put-together. So, tell me - where the hell was this movie five, even ten years ago? Why now? After what we already know happens to the central character in question, why have a solo outing *now*? Would have almost stung less if this movie were just downright bad. At least at that point the whole idea of a solo Black Widow movie would seem to have been a bust. But, no. This is actually solid in every department except the intangible ones. The meaning behind any of what you're seeing on screen is simply all over the place. It's a damn shame, but an entertaining one, to be sure. Expand

For a viewer, who takes the amalgamated approach of MCU phase movies and Disney plus streaming series, this movie should have benefitted from an ideal placement during the phase 3 progress. A Captain Marvel movie predated its release. The action, humor and drama are scintillating enough to bring viewers to the edge of their seats. The characters are neatly done and stays as the USP throughout. The experience would have been even greater, if the last act wasn't riddled with messy sequences. That dragged the experience down for my the movie, giving similar vibes like Iron Man 3 and Age of Ultron. A pass, otherwise. 6.75/10 Expand

The end result: an incredible spy thriller that should have been released many, many years ago. If it was released then, probably Scarlett Johansson would have second thoughts about leaving one of her signature roles. However, we literally have a new Widow to contend with: Florence Pugh. Wow...again, another great find by Feige and Co. Pugh has always been a great actress but sorry to say, I felt that she fit more like a glove in this universe in comparison to Johansson herself. I always felt that they always tried to fit Natasha to Scarlett's and not the other way around. Pugh on the other hand is literally born to play Yelena. Great action sequences as usual, and after three great Disney+ series, I thought that the cinematic experience for the MCU is a goner. Not anymore. When the pandemic is truly over, people will return to the cinemas to see these flicks again. Expand

Some of the fight scenes were gritty and awesome while others had a ton of cuts and looked kinda sloppy. Yelena and red guardian were a little too funny for what seemed like a pretty serious movie. Some chi towards the end looked a little silly and there were a lot of skips and rushing to get through the plot I felt. Overall a fun movie but it kinda felt like a knock off winter soldier which is okay but it could've been a better send off for such a great character. Expand

Black Widow was a pleasant surprise for me. As a non-Marvel fan, this story was easy to follow in which the early life and origin of Black Widow are explored. The extensive action scenes and strong CGI make this film feel like a real blockbuster.

Let me start off by saying that I didn't even like the Black Widow as a character before watching this movie.
It is out of the box and doesn't follow Marvel's usual formula. Even the opening is the best in any Marvel film so far aswell. This movie is intense. The metaphor for human traffic is constant and plot twists happen frequently. Some of these are predictable but most aren't. Can also add that Black Widow brutally murders Birds of Prey as a feminist masterpiece and as such doesn't need to advertise itself as because it's MUCH more than that at the same time.

Can only critic the action as it's sometimes, (~60%) over the top and unrealistic but that's Marvel aswell.

I was worried that after the success of Avengers, Marvel would have a hard time picking up the thread and just not rise to that quality. Ono as of course it didn't even climb here and Black Widow is one of the "weaker" pieces, but in my opinion it has nothing to be ashamed of at all. Black Widow offered us a story before the events of Infinity War and it fits in beautifully, plus it brings us closer to the character himself and in my opinion it works a treat. I found the intro of the film almost masterful. Now I apologize for the slight exaggeration, but I just loved it madly. Throw in some classic action scenes, which Marvel has really honed over the years and just knows how to do. I liked the music a hell of a lot. There was still a quirk here and there, as is the Marvel way. I also have to give a shout out to Task Master, where there was a minor revelation that I wasn't expecting. Summa summarum for me this is a good film that once again got me into going to the cinema to see superhero movies and of course I recommend it to Marvel fans. Expand

This movie felt like a “Captain America: Winter Soldier feel to it! Great action, good humor and more. Florence Pugh, Scarlett Johansson, David Harbour, and Rachel Weiz were great in the movie portraying their characters. They did what they need to do for me to like the characters in this movie. I’m not too familiar with the villain, Taskmaster but I will say this, I like how they did with it in the movie with a twist of their own idea because we know that, they will never follow the MCU comics but will use that as an inspiration and idea to create their own style they like to use for the villain for the story in the movie to make sense and complete. I know many fans are disappointed about it but the realization is that, they will never follow the comics and put it in the movie because of one thing I know is, many of the fans in the world maybe already read the comics for Black Widow and others marvel characters so they wouldn’t want to make a movie that the people already know the stories about from beginning to end. They try to make their version of the villain the best it can be in all their movies. I ABSOLUTELY HATE when a Marvel movies comes out, and there’s a lot of negative review for a Marvel Studios movies right away on release day…Whether it’s for Black Widow or others, because MCU comics fans expect the Marvel Studios to follow the comics for their movie for them. The team work very hard and it would be a waste of hard work if you are really not proud of them to try to make a great movie that took probably 2 years to make. But for me, since I don’t read the comics. I didn’t really care! I just go to the theater and enjoy it!! No negative reviews will stop my experience!!!! I give it 9/10 A+ Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pros:
+ Lorne Balfe's Soundtrack
+ The action sequences
+ Scarlett and Pugh's Acting
+ The dark tone it has lying underneath
+ Red Guardian was fun and Melina was okay
+ Good villains (not great; Taskmaster was badass and Dreykov felt like a real threat)
+ (Female) Empowerement done right Cons:
- The pacing
- The post-credit scene (while the goodbye was great, Valentina and the Hawkeye set up was a bit disappoiting considering it's the first post credit scene we get in theaters after Far From Home).
- The nods to the Avengers could be trimmed down
- Lots of characters added nothing to the plot (Ross and Mason added nothing to the overall story)
- Lots of questions to answers that could have easily been answered
- Didn't work as a Swan Song
- Taskmaster was severely underused Overall: Good and entertaining movie that kinda bugs me as the first movie in the MCU's Phase 4. Felt a bit like Iron Man 3 whereas the plot overall didn't affect the Infinity Saga and I believe this one's plot won't affect much of the MCU's new saga. But super enjoyable and fun.

The film is very grounded, it has moments of a good drama film, dialogues are good as well as characters and acting. I was entertained. I didn't feel like Natasha was a sidekick to her sister, in her own movie. Perhaps people are just unfamiliar with the concept of character development, now?

There were a few ridiculous things in this movie that I did not like, such as the revelation of who Taskmaster was (and the character design), plus the emasculation of Red Guardian, but overall, it was a highly entertaining flick, and you could connect with the two leads (ScarJo & Pugh).

It was fun and I enjoyed it. You ignore the bad and take it for what it is (a Superhero/action movie) and you'll enjoy it. It was certainly far better than Captain Marvel.

It does not deserve as much hate as it's gotten in some circles, and actually the user reviews appear to reflect that.

There was no sex scenes, no love story subplot, no fan service, no sexual violence trauma 'backstory' not even innuendos) and the female characters were actually well written, with actual problems to solve and were not 'helped' by a man who solved them for them and their driving motivation is not the approval of a man. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie was absolutely fantastic! I don’t understand why a lot of people are turning it down so much. Sure we got Scarlett Johanssons standalone film after her character had died, but it’s a prequel movie that delves deep into her past. And sure I can agree that may be some of the humor was overplayed but that won’t stop me from giving it a 10. The thing that’s so great about this movie is the characters that are introduced, such as Florence pughs Yelena. She completely carries the movie it is an absolute amazing addition to the MCU. I cannot wait to see what she does in the Hawkeye series! David and Rachel are amazing too and hope they will return as well. The other thing that’s great is that they touch on so many issues with men overpowering women and making them feel like objects. The movie is literally about chemically altering girls around the world and using them for Dreykovs own purposes. At the end of the film, all the windows are free and have the chance to make their own choices. Another great thing was the taskmaster twist. It was a twist that I did not see coming at all. Having it be Dreykovs daughter was the perfect way for Natasha‘s past to really come back and haunt her so that she could challenge it and make up for her mistakes. And for anyone who is deeply upset by this, the MCU is not an actual comic book roller coaster, they are adaptations from the comics and grow into their own organic substance. But there are even reports that the taskmaster will return it in more common accurate forms so that will be fun to see! Scarlett Johansson really pushes herself in this movie. She gives the audience one last blockbuster film with her as the fantastic black widow. Of course we all knew that she was going to die in avengers endgame, but in the third act when the red room falls from the sky, it takes me out of the knowledge I already know and puts me on the edge of my seat wondering if she or the other characters would survive. And for anyone who said that the third act it’s just a CGI mess and that it’s rushed, they are absolutely insane and should get checked out by a mental health doctor. The twists were fantastic and the action was fantastic and everything else about it was fantastic! So think about judging a movie by its flaws before realizing the greater goodness that surrounds the whole production. Expand

What we got is a middling Marvel effort with a rehashed spy thriller story and its affiliated action set-pieces and plot clichés. Granted, that very spy flavour that bleeds into each act more and more evidently endows us with a couple of slick action sequences that are pulled off with aplomb. It's just unfortunate all of them are devoid of the slightest tension. While on the subject, there's no real sense of danger I feel each time either Natasha or Yelena are supposedly at risk, and The Taskmaster completely fails to prove an imposing threat, that's not to mention it's a villain that's clearly merely skimmed over, with the result of falling victim to the plot's mishmash of clichés. The humour isn't the worst, largely due to Pugh and Harbour whose chemistry elevates each scene they share a great deal. The third act feels the most superhero-y, with a fair share of explosions and CGI-heavy scenes that almost feel incongruous with the relatively small-scope MCU installment Black Widow aims to be. However, It's also here when we get some emotionally-charged moments where Pugh — yup, once again — and Scarlett get there moments to shine, serving a fitting send-off for our titular superhero. Moreover, all of these shortcomings can be tolerated given the joy one gets out of this movie. I was surprised how much time flew by minutes before reaching its post-credit scene that got me really pumped up to see what's coming next. Expand

Yelena was a hoot through the whole thing, and the "parents that are still *way* too into each other" family dynamic they had going was pretty convincingly well written. There are lots of neat costuming details (differing amounts of braids vrs "ties" to the family) and the action was well paced. It put some much needed perspective on Black Widow's character, and having her as an overprotective, overburdened, eldest sibling makes alot of her other appearances across the MCU make more sense (as opposed to the generic female death machine she seemed like before). That's exactly what we have before us this weekend folks. The long-awaited released of Marvel and pandemic delayed, Black Widow - of course, starring the beautiful, Scarlett Johansson (Yost?) as the beloved, turncoat super spy/assassin Natasha Romanoff a.k.a. Black Widow. This film follows Natasha after Civil War but prior to Infinity War. We all wondered what occurred with her in that time to be with Captain and Sam and now we know. She went on a blast-from-the-past trip to clear her ledger of red. Let's see if this film really was needed in the MCU universe.

I'll put it like this, Endgame gave Natasha one of the most heartfelt, poignant, sincere and redeeming ends a hero could ever ask for. This Black Widow film finds a way to undo that and just rehash the wounds of her impending doom. In reality, this movie deserved to be made prior to Infinity War and Marvel really screwed the pooch by letting this linger. The story itself could've been set in between any of the movies, particularly after Iron Man 2. In fact, this movie feels like a sequel rather than an "origin story", which in a way only enhances my feeling of what if they truly appreciated a strong female spy lead in the Marvel universe. With that said, the viewer feels like they've been thrown inside a moving bus and don't know where they are headed because it's so out of place in the MCU timeline, including the TV shows. Marvel really just missed out on capitalizing on what is otherwise a solid movie by having it released outside of the first 4 phases of the universe.

Nevertheless, Black Window on it's own is a very solid movie. The biggest knock of the movie has to be it's too long for a movie that really isn't going anywhere. We all know from Endgame that she's gone but is she gone forever? We hope not. Either way, there's a ton of dialogue and almost too little action when considering the more than two hour runtime. Nevertheless, the dialogue is clever, funny at times, and endearing as well. In fact, that sums up the movie from beginning to end. From the backstory we learn to the unrequited love at the end, Black Widow works. The cast is very strong, even Pugh with what seems like a terrible accent at times. I think viewers will want to see more of these characters and judging by the movie talks and the post credit scene, they will be obliged. On top of that, the viewer will be entertained by the typical action. We've all gotten used to the big explosions, the chases, and fight scenes. Black Widow certainly isn't lacking for any of these things particularly with the addition of Taskmaster, which I would've wanted more from.

Ultimately, Black Widow is a good story that is too late for the franchise. Even if this movie came out during the pandemic, the film was too late in the grand scheme of things. This ultimately hurts the movies rating overall. The film more rehashes old wounds than gives a beloved character a just due, like she received in Endgame. Everyone should definitely check this film out for the matinee price and you absolutely won't go wrong once the film hits Disney+ without the premium price. So grab your bowl of popcorn and watch Black Widow and family handle some business.

This movie should have come out numerous years ago, but at least it's out now. Fight choreography was immaculate, and the story was overall pretty solid. Florence Pugh and David Harbour were of course stand-outs, but Scarlett Johansson had several moments to shine. Those that love a good thriller should enjoy Black Widow, even though it puts in a lot of work to set up potential future MCU projects. Unlike several other MCU movies, Black Widow does a great job balancing believable humor with the more grounded and serious plot moments. The movie truly does "complete" Natasha's storyline in the MCU. Expand

Este filme, pudo haber tenido mas potencial, pero quede satisfecho por el final y la escena postcredito, lo que hace expandir el universo de Marvel
