Marvel has made some of finest superhero movies of the 2010's, so it comes as a surprise that Black Widow feels so pointless and at times boring. A generic action film with little consequences to the MCU at large.

Meh, the best part of this movie was I didn't need to pay for it as it's on Disney+ was able to watch it while finishing some work. More of a marvel toss away, as I think they were just trying to run out Scarlett Johansson's contract.

Fans were really worried about how the Universe would continue after the 'Avengers Endgame'. So they have decided to back and start with Black Widow's(Scarlett Johansson) life. OK let's come to the movie. 'Black Widow' isn't great and can be considered as one of the weakest movie in the MCU(even 'Captain Marvel' was way better) but still it somehow manages to keep us engaged. The movie isn't bad but fails to come up to the expectations. It completely drags on and was not quite moving in a good pace. Even though the fights were good and the acting impressive it fails to engross us till the end. When coming to the acting Florence Pugh (as Yelena) was the one who actually steals the show and David Harbour (as Red Guardian) was good too and it also has a very weird Taskmaster(Olga Kurylenko) which everyone says was bad but I don't find it disappointing. And finally they also has given us an idea about the 'Red Room' that was always haunting the MCU fans for years. The movie also carries one of the worst CGI Marvel had ever used. It was so unoriginal and unimpressive. Newbie Director Cate Shortland tried to come up with something different but however it failed to make impression (On me actually, many are finding this movie to be a great one) but I should say she had given her best. 'Black Widow' didn't turn out to be a great treat as expected but in a gloomy 2021 I should say it is one of good movies released till now. So I recommend to give it a watch because it's worth your time and nobody would find this movie to be a bad one. Expand

There are some good elements and absolutely bad elements in this movie. Taskmaster - what a joke. Budapest - they've ruined the twist, AGAIN!
Action scenes - such a trash... Thank you for humor, tho. It was fine.

To be completely honest I was excited at first at the prospect of delving deeper into the origins of Black Widow. As a fan of the MCU, however, I was thoroughly unimpressed. The movie struggled for many reasons, not the least of which was the acting. Even Florence Pugh, who has proven to be a phenomenal young actress, was at least in this instance bad. I don't think any of the characters were able to keep their accents consistent throughout the course of the movie. On top of that this movie suffered from the same disease that any "prequel" has to manage. This disease being that there aren't really any stakes when it comes to the outcome of the main character. We essentially already know her future. We know that she isn't going to die and that no serious harm is going to become her seeing as she is doing just fine in the next film chronologically. I guess the only real question this film answers in regards to Black Widow is how did she dye her hair before Infinity War. Expand

I was excited to see this villian after hearing so much about it but they mismanaged the character. Marvel is also known for adding jokes in their movies but this movie had stupid jokes. You may not even think of laughing of their jokes. This movie just had action and nothing else.

Overall, this movie was normal marvel movie which you can give a try but don't expect too much.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie was not horrible but it left much to be desired. First the voice acting was all over the place. Two the main villain was only in the movie for 15 minutes. The secondary villain/ taskmaster was lame and didn't have a climactic moment. I also couldn't take any of the emotional scenes seriously they tried to set up drama and family ties too quickly and that made it feel forced. Again this was not a terrible movie but could have been so much better than it was. Expand

It's far too late to be an origin story for Natasha Romanoff. It doesn't really add anything meaningful to her character arc. If anything, this movie feels like an origin story for Yelena and the rest of the Widows as well as the introduction of Red Guardian and Melina to the wider MCU.

Coming after the end of phase 3, but set squarely in the timeline established by phase 3, and with only the end-credits scene set in phase 4, the movie feels out of place. A one off. A relic of the Infinity Saga.

The action was decent but way overused. It felt formulaic, as if they had to fit in action sequences in specific time frames to ensure the audience didn't get bored between bits of exposition. And the effects felt like they took a significant step backward from what we saw in the later phase 3 MCU films. Some of the high flying gymnastic style stunts performed by Natasha, Yelena, and Taskmaster were some of the most obvious bits of CGI I've seen since Phantom Menace (the fight sequence on the bridge early on, for example).

An out of place movie that really did nothing for the character of Natasha that tried to live solely on the strength of its action sequences. I doubt I'll bother watching it again. David Harbour stole the show though and I hope we get to see him as Red Guardian in later MCU entries. I'd love nothing more than to see him fighting side by side with Sam Wilson's Captain America.

I'll probably start with the good things about the movie.

It has some amazing picture and scene work. The beginning about the family in an oldschool fashion was so great and beautiful, it really touched me deep. I liked how they showed them as characters there, in the beginning.

The music and sound is just also superb.

Acting. I'd say that Ray Winstone and David Harbour just carried this movie. Johansson looked kinda disturbing here...maybe that's just her character, I don't know...

But there goes the bad part.

And it's literally almost everything.

The story itself is just so...stupid?? Like, there were so many widows all along and we never heard of it? Really? Or what about Red Guardian? Oh come on... The fights where every enemy is modestly standing in line and waiting for his turn to attack the main Hero...I thought Marvel were better than that!

The whole movie looked too exaggerated, where Marvel did all the best to make the scenes as IMPOSSIBLY EPIC as possible, and it didn't look good...

And of course, the last but not the least...
Women are righteous and almighty gods, while men are worthless weak and stupid junk...that's the message? This is getting out of hand, and is somehow looking like a propaganda now...more than a movie based on comics. This forced agenda is so irritating, and I'd really be happy if I could just enjoy a great Marvel action...rather than this politics...
What's funny, is that DC already got hurt because of such agenda in their "Birds of Prey", but Marvel somehow refused to learn on those lessons.

Eh....there were times when Marvel movies were just cool and epic movies, which we were looking forward to. And we watched them again and again. And still are.

But this movie...I don't think I'll ever have a wish to watch it again.

"Black Widow" is one of the most anticipated films of the studio among fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in recent times. The tape was pursued by a very difficult fate, whose release was postponed repeatedly due to the Coronavirus"Black Widow" is one of the most anticipated films of the studio among fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in recent times. The tape was pursued by a very difficult fate, whose release was postponed repeatedly due to the Coronavirus pandemic. And now, almost a year and a half after the publication of the first trailer, the solo picture about the Avenger Natasha Romanoff has finally reached cinemas. Regular viewers of the franchise have not seen a superhero movie on the big screen from Marvel Studios and producer Kevin Feige for two whole years since the summer premiere of "Far from Home". That's why everyone had huge hopes for "The Widow": firstly, this is a film that fans have been asking for for more than one year, and secondly, some people still managed to miss such entertainment on the big screen pretty much.

The story of the formation of the Black Widow as a superhero has always remained in the background, and therefore, within the film universe, viewers have very little information about what kind of person Natasha was, who went from a sex symbol of the Avengers to a full-fledged multi-faceted hero who sacrificed himself to save the Universe in the "Finale". And therefore, a separate film about a Widow does not need to show this very becoming of a hero – Natasha is already a hero. A hero about whom little is known. Her past literally consists of only bits of information, rather than a full-fledged prehistory. What was her childhood like? What is the red room and what happened in Budapest, which the heroine repeatedly recalled with a Hawk's eye? "Black Widow" is a movie about this, with its super task putting the disclosure of the human side of the character in the first place, opening the curtain of secrets.

However, "Black Widow" is written and staged so tasteless that it is simply boring to follow the story of Natasha. The main problem of the tape is that it almost does not reveal its central character in any way. The audience is introduced to Natasha's fake parents, with her sister Elena performed by the charming Florence Pugh, but they are all so cardboard and template dummies of the second plan with a weak disclosure that they, as full-fledged characters, do not cling in any way. The main charm of the characters is the actors who play them. That Rachel Weisz in the role of Natasha's spiritual mother, that David Harbour in the image of a super soldier a la the Soviet answer to Captain America are incomparable. It is impossible to tear your eyes away from them or from their acting. I really want to know their history, but the film, alas, does not even try to clearly reveal them, leaving the viewer with a heap of questions after viewing.

If we remove Weiss, Harbor and Pugh from the film and look at their characters exclusively from a scenario point of view, they will not be able to please with anything. "The Widow" exists exclusively within the framework of spy cliches, resembling a very unsuccessful parody of the best tapes about Jason Bourne, rather than an independent picture. At the same time, it would be fine if the tape about Natasha was just a template spy thriller, of which the audience already has a car and a small cart without it, so even within the framework of the cliche film "The Widow" does not work in any way. This is especially true for the main antagonist, who simply wants to capture and control the whole world in order to… To take over and control the whole world? This is the only exposure for the villain that the film gives. He just needs to be angry, because it's necessary.

"Black Widow" does not have enough fire in its eyes – this is too studio-like a film even for Marvel Studios, not trying to portray at least something spectacular. Perhaps the problem lies in the director Kate Shortland, who failed to cope with her tasks, as a result of which the tape can not be compared with the same "Other War" of the Russo brothers, but it is impossible to put these pictures in one row – they exist as if in two completely different film universes. There is no clear answer why this happened. As well as the answer to the question, why is this film needed at all? Does he give answers to fans ' questions? Yes, he does, but it would be better if he kept silent than gave such ridiculous answers. Fans have long wanted to find out what happened in Budapest and the answer to the manner: "nothing – they are clearly not satisfied. It was as if Marvel offered its audience one long-running joke without a punchline, instead of a picture about the Black Widow.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. |6.2| Black Widow is a very good character in the MCU and I think Scarlett Johansson does a great job portraying the character. Black Widow the movie does a great job of showing the past of Black Widow as it should. So what's bad about the movie? There are many things about the movie I didn't like. Taskmaster, settings of the movie, and most of all the plot/ ending of the movie. Taskmaster, a master assassin is not actually shown as an assassin. Taskmaster does no killing in the film unless you are talking about when they ram a tank into multiple cars. I'm sure some of the pedestrians died if it was real life. Taskmaster is shown as a feared person in the movie but there isn't anything for the viewer to fear about them. Sure they can mimic moves others do but that is all we saw they can do. I feel taskmaster was done dirty in this movie. The settings in this movie are relevant to the plot of the movie. There are six main locations in the movie, Ohio, Cuba, Budapest, Prison, Farm, and "Hover Craft". Ohio and Cuba being part of the past in the movie and the other four being the present. In every location, there is a fight scene and something about family. I felt like I was watching an F&F movie with Vin Diesel with the number of times they mentioned how everyone was a family. The ending of the movie is what got me, what made me dislike the movie. The movie is set after Captain America: Civil War. The ending sets up for Avengers: Infinity War. We are left with a cliffhanger to know what Black Widow does to get the team back together, which isn't explained in Infinity War. We are also left with wanting more Black Widow, but unfortunately, if you have already watched Endgame you know that she is dead. I think if this movie came out before the endgame and before infinity war, much of the audience would have liked it more. Instead, it opens a new plot to the sister and what she is going to do to Hawkeye. Expand

The villain never seems like a challenge. With the exception of the younger sister the supporting characters are unlikable. And the jokes repeatedly fall flat - and I do mean repeatedly there is one joke (about Black Widows posing) that is repeated *three* *times* throughout the movie.

Many wasted opportunities. Too many situations are resolved with big fight scenes rather than using Black Widows talents as a master spy. The Red Guardian has been turned into a buffoon and the butt of all their jokes. The ending resolved none of the moral questions in the film especially the dubious ethics of one of the lead characters is simply forgotten.

Ultimately a disappointing film given what might have been.

I would like to say right away that this film was supposed to be released in 2017, because after what happened in "Avengers: Endgame", the drama does not affect the viewer.

The film begins with a tense act 1 and it seems that the atmosphere will be in the same direction for all 2 hours, but something went wrong.

Natasha is on the run after the events of "Civil war" and is constantly in contact with some guy who throughout the film gets Romanoff everything she needs. Who is he? Where is he from? Where does it take everything? There will be no answer to all these questions. The character just exists to simply move the plot further.

One of the villains, nicknamed Taskmaster, is a walking disgrace. There was nothing left of the comic canon, where he had a phenomenal memory and could copy the enemy's fighting styles, which made him practically invincible. For all the time, he had 3-4 action scenes that are not even remembered. The twist with the disclosure of the identity is absolutely empty. It does not cause any emotions, except for hitting the palm of your hand on your face.

The main villain of the Drakov... This is one of the worst and most cliched villains of MCU. He doesn't have any motivation. He's angry because he's angry. Even 15 years ago, it would have been a shame to show such a level of a villain, since such films as "Spider-Man 1-2" and "Batman: The Begins"were already released.

Well, small moments:

You can forget about the situation in Budapest with Barton and put, of course, not in the same row, but next to the eye of Fury, Ralph Boner and Mandarin.

The graphics are also sagging in places. You can see how 3D models and scenes shot on a green background are drawn.

There are a few more bad moments, but they cannot be described without spoilers.

Of the advantages, only the intro at the beginning of the film, Elena Belova and the scene after the credits. The Red Guardian is a good character in itself, but it is not remembered in any way, except for the scene with pulling on the costume.

Black Widow finally has her own movie, and although it’s not the greatest superhero or even Marvel movie you’ll ever watch it’s about time we got a solo movie about Natasha Romanoff. It only took two Captain America movies, two Hulk movies,Black Widow finally has her own movie, and although it’s not the greatest superhero or even Marvel movie you’ll ever watch it’s about time we got a solo movie about Natasha Romanoff. It only took two Captain America movies, two Hulk movies, three Iron Man movies and three Thor movies, but hey, better late than never.

Set just after the events in Civil War and before Infinity War. Natasha must confront her dark past as a spy before she became an Avenger. I have to say I’ve never once questioned Black Widow’s abilities in any of the previous Marvel movies, she is highly skilled and a deadly weapon but still only human yet she fit in among the other avengers effortlessly. Yet in Black Widow she seems to be elevated to superhuman strengths. On more than one occasion I couldn’t help drown out that voice that said “they’d be dead after that”, “no way anyone is surviving that.” I tried to drown out that voice I really did but I just couldn’t. Many of the characters in Black Widow seem to be able to withstand just about anything, they’re bullet proof, knife proof, and explosion proof. I tried not to let it bother me but it kept taking me out of the movie. It’s difficult to maintain any kind of drama or suspense when all the characters can withstand anything and get right back up and carry on as if nothing happened. I don’t believe Black Widow needed to be this over the top, with a strong first half it became more over the top as it progressed and by the time you’re in the third act it really started to feel like a video game. I wish I wasn’t saying this, I wish I liked Black Widow as much as Captain Marvel but it’s just not quite there. Despite some of the issues I have with it there is still a lot to enjoy. The strongest thing about Black Widow is its characters, I always enjoy watching Scarlet Johansson as Black Widow and finally seeing her in a solo movie is something I’ve been looking forward to for a long time. I liked the addition of Florence Pugh and Rachel Weisz. Also adding David Harbour as the Red Guardian aka Russia’s equivalent to Captain America was just a bonus and he does manage to steal most of the comedic spotlight. Johansson and Pugh really make a great onscreen pair. They are clearly having a great time kicking ass and that is the best thing I can take from Black Widow.

I really wanted to love this movie, I tried harder than I would with most movies but it’s not at the standard it should have been. So yes I’m a little disappointed but Black Widow is definitely recommended for all the Marvel fans.

Black Widow is a good enough MCU film, but doesn't reach the heights it should. This is no spy thriller film, instead it's just an action-filled movie from start to finish like Fast & Furious. And just like that film series, Black WidowBlack Widow is a good enough MCU film, but doesn't reach the heights it should. This is no spy thriller film, instead it's just an action-filled movie from start to finish like Fast & Furious. And just like that film series, Black Widow introduces us to another, ehm, family.

Let's keep in mind that this film was designed more like to quickly make a female-led MCU film because the Black Widow character is dead and Scarlett Johansson wants out, than making a film that would really highlight Scarlett Johansson's character of Natasha Romanoff. As a result it doesn't work nearly as well as DC's Wonder Woman in that regard.

The action though is very good. Hard to complain.

The plot is about Soviet spies planted in the 1990s USA and what it means for kids to have a fake family and losing it by force. This idea makes for some great moments between Romanoff, Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) and the fake parents of Red Guardian (David Harbour) and Iron Maiden (Rachel Weisz) when they reunite.

But the most disappointing element of this film is the Taskmaster brute. It's just like Ben Kingsley's fake Mandarin in Iron Man 3, only 100X worse. If they had left this brute unnamed, or if it was a mindless robot, it would have been so much better and more fitting, because Taskmaster is speechless until the very end. But no, it's a random girl (not even a female version of Tony Masters) who got buffed, got a male suit and was renamed Taskmaster (and was revealed to have photographic memory thanks to an implant instead of an ability of her own). Why? I don't understand who makes these moronic decisions that deviate so much from the source material and for what purpose.

Overall, Black Widow is an enjoyable but forgettable MCU movie. It's a pity that Scarlett Johansson will never play the role of Black Widow again, but her character deserved a better swansong.

While the performances by ScarJo and, particularly, Florence Pugh give some reason for celebration, the treatment of TaskMaster (and the actor behind the mask) are a disgrace. Also, Marvel appears to find no better way to show strong women than to surround them with pathetically inadequate male figures, betraying the source material and, ultimately, the audience. Both the cast and Marvel fans deserved much better. The fact that we had to wait this long for this is just salt on an open wound. Expand

A prequel in which Marvel's action ridicules the self-styled psychological depth of the protagonist and her supporting actors. The miscasting is stellar: the beauties (Kurylenko) become horrendously disfigured, the fatties (Harbor) become the Russian counterpart of Captain America, and the widers than tall (Johansson, Weisz) become extraordinary superheroines. The childlike tricks are borrowed from the saga of "Mission: Impossible", while the substance is once again advertising for the political correctness ("Save the female Children"). And if the seriousness must arrive with "Smell Like Teen Spirit" chosen as opening song of the film or citing "The Shining" with the pun "Red Room" / "Murder", whose first comics' appearance occurs in "Black Widow" no. 3, January 2005, then the limit is abundantly exceeded.

All those claiming otherwise are proving that they either cannot pay attention which is incomprehensible considering a large amount of this movie is CGI, or they are outright exaggerating. In some people's twisted minds, agenda can replace entertainment instead of being used creatively to enhance it. This movie ruins the character of Taskmaster, and nerfs Red Guardian (super-soldier juice) to the point where all the unpowered little* girls are doing better than he does. Even Scarlett BW is nerfed a bit, so Pugh BW takes center stage as she is being handed the titular role. Of course there is no reason as to why a YOUNGER Scarlett BW is less impressive than her older self, except lazy writing and directing. She should be at the height of her training at this prequel point, but apparently like most of the D+ MCU shows, this is just a springboard to push the next thing they want us to buy. Again, that is not entertaining, just disappointing.

Overall this was a time-waster, nothing more. It loses two point for the bad CGI and lighting, as well as what they did to Taskmaster and Red Guardian.

More like Black Widow Presents: Florence Pugh’s character.

So, after a long break of Marvel movies, with 2020 having zero Marvel properties, due to the on-going pandemic. I believe the last time we had no Marvel movies was back in 2009, but without the modern plague. It was a nice break from things and smaller movies got more of the spotlight. But now after things have calmed down a bit, Marvel felt confident to finally release ‘Black Widow’, the long waited solo movie that fans wanted since her first appearance in ‘Iron Man 2’, the fan favourite, Natasha Romanoff. Now we finally got it, and the results are...very uneven.

This movie came out way too late. It should’ve been released immediately after ‘Winter Soldier’ or ‘Civil War’, either of the Captain America movies. The long wait for this movie is questionable at best, since we got two Ant-Man movies instead of something that people wanted.

Although, I’ve got to say, the opening credits with the cover song of ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’, originally sung by Kurt Cobain, playing over this chilling imagery of children being trafficked into trained assassins, which sets up a dark tone that I didn’t expect from Marvel, and it immediately got my attention. The opening credits was easily the best part of the movie, but unfortunately the rest of the movie didn’t match that tone, as it got too comical at some points and gradually fell off.

For over 11 years, we were blessed by Scarlett Johansson’s portrayal of the title character and it’s sad we have to say goodbye to her once again. Johansson herself fully commits to the role once again, even though I thought she was the least interesting part of the movie. She honestly felt like a side character than anything else, which sucks because this is supposed to be her movie.

With this movie being a prequel before the events of ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame’, you know Black Widow herself is most likely going to survive the movie, but that doesn’t mean she can’t get hurt, right? Well in this movie for whatever reason she’s completely invincible and barley gets a scratch on her. There’s a handful of moments where she falls from a great distance only to land safely to the ground, which was too unbelievable to not at least suffer a bruise or a cut or any type of injury. She’s not even superhuman or anything. I guess Marvel characters are like cats with nine lives.

One of the comedic reliefs of the movie is David Harbour, who’s entertaining as the Red Guardian. Rachel Weisz is also there and she’s fine. But still, I thought Harbour and Weisz Russian accents were all over the place at certain times. However, it’s nowhere near as bad as Ray Winstone’s, aka the most British man ever, who doesn’t even try at all. And I can’t shake off that Winstone kind of looks like Martin Scorsese (thanks a lot Red Letter Media).

On the other hand, the best character and actor in the entire movie belongs to Florence Pugh, pew pew pew. This shouldn’t be a shocker to anyone if you have been following her recent winning streak. While her Russian accent isn’t what I call great, but it sounded better on her since she already has a deep husky voice that suits the accent better.

Everything on a technical standpoint is always good in these movies, expect for the action scenes which I found to be disappointing, as there was nothing memorable or exciting about any of it.

The final act is where things completely went off the rails and the CGI fight scenes looked bad. The visual effects during the final battle looked like one of those "director's cut" where they never finished the scene for the theatrical release but wanted to include it on the disc for completeness.

Oh, about the shocking reveal of Taskmaster, I really didn’t care. I guess we must wait a few years for the real Taskmaster, like the Mandarin in ‘Iron Man 3’.
Also, I feel like this movie should’ve focused more on Natasha's "family" backstory, because I think that would have been more interesting, but even with the 2-hour runtime, it felt rushed somehow. Marvel has been doing this for years now, but here I found the humour incredibly distracting and took away a lot of the serious scenes that could have had potential of being hard hitting. I just wish they let some of the tension or seriousness be exactly that, instead of throwing in a cheap joke to deflate the weight of the scene.

Marvel Studios seriously needs to shake up the formula a bit, because I’m starting to lose the will to live with these movies. Please, no more “grounded, concrete looking, superhero movies”, cause it’s getting so boring.

I'm sorry for coming across as negative, but the more I write the more negative I become towards the movie, as I can’t hide my disappointment and frustration.

Overall rating: Natasha deserves better.

Just more stupid filler like those overrated Disney Plus shows (WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Loki). Plus, we already know Black Widow’s unfortunate fate after watching Endgame, so there was absolutely no point in watching this making it incredibly predictable which kills all the suspense as it obviously takes place in between the events of Civil War and Infinity War. Not to mention ruining the Red Guardian (and David Harbour was miscast as him) by turning him into an ugly, goofy, fat caricature with a big, ugly beard. But worst of all, this movie COMPLETELY RUINED Taskmaster! That’s its biggest offender! The Marvel Cinematic Universe ended with Endgame. Endgame was the end of the MCU. Now Disney is just milking it with these dumb unnecessary installments and unnecessary spin-offs like WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, Black Widow, and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Then they’re going to milk it even further with an unnecessary third Thor sequel (Thor: Love and Thunder) and an unnecessary Avengers spin-off Disney Plus show (Hawkeye). This movie is a complete waste of time just like WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. It sucks that there are so many mindless Disney shills supporting these lame fillers by wasting their money to watch them. Phase 4 is a dumpster fire. A Black Widow should have never been made. Seeing from the trailers, the action scenes from the Black Widow movie, we would have expected levels of action like Captain America: The Winter Soldier; the action scenes are fun but most of them feel rushed and ultimately too short. The story doesn't really give a lot of information about Natasha's backstory and zooms right through it with a grueling, long opening credits and you feel all of the sequences rushing to the finish point. Our heroes, David Harbour's Red Guardian and Rachel Weisz's Melina Vostokoff were great to see but they were underutilized at the end of the story. O. T. **** character seemed to be important at first, but yet you could remove his scenes from the movie and it wouldn't make a difference. The antangonists were god awful, two of the worst villains in the MCU to date. If you came to see the movie because of Taskmaster, please don't get too attached to this version of his; you will be disappointed. The other antagonist felt so mediocre and bland, you wonder if this is really a MCU movie. But all of this said, you can have fun watching this for the first time seeing the chemistry between Scarlett and Florence's characters and their journey, which is the highlight of the movie. But this movie is not worth a rewatch unless you enjoy and love the Black Widow character. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A pretty mediocre film with some good action and I did like the family reunion thing, that was funny. Regarding the end of credits scene though, you're really gonna tell me that anyone living within that universe would be ignorant and misinformed enough to blame Hawkeye for Black Widow's death? Surely what happened with the soul stone would be common knowledge in that universe? Expand

There are not as many action scenes (lot of michael-bay explosions) and a lot more dialogue than in "typical" Marvel movie. But then this is not really a typical movie, this is about a character that has already been killed off and I do not understand why this movie has not been released 2 or 3 years ago... For those who noticed, yes, there are so called "#metoo moments" in this movie which, I guess is fine for the context, there is not much politics here. Taskmaster is really good villain in general but there is not much about her (uh, spoiler?) in this movie. Jokes are OK, supporting cast is good too but not really enough to build them up. After credits scene is almost not worthy sitting and waiting, you can just read online exactly what happens, no "gasp" or "wow" moment there.
Really forgettable movie unfortunately.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I wish I had been able to sit further back in the theater because even reclined, the third row was too close to really appreciate the massive action scenes. I especially couldn't "get" the news montage after the opening. That's what happens when plans change and tickets are hard to come by.

I am not overly thrilled with this movie, there wasn't enough origin for an origin story. I do love Florence Pugh's Yelena and I thought the banter in the family, especially between the sisters was very real and often amusing. ScarJo played Black Widow very familiarly.

The overall storyline felt muddled to me with jumping around different times and unclear expository dialog. I'm not a crazy about action scenes that go on forever, and there were too many of those that were impressive stunt-wise but after a while no longer added to the story.

What I felt is missing: (lack-of-plot info that could be spoilers). Although much of Nat's childhood is explained, most of the following things are simply mentioned in passing. I wanted to learn more about her Red Room training life, how she was used as an assassin, why she decided to defect and how she ended up with S.H.I.E.L.D. and as the Avenger's tech expert, how she and Clint became friends (and what did happen in Budapest that they always argued about). I suppose all that plus the family story and the action plot would have made the movie untenable. I'm a solid but primarily movie-only Marvel fan; perhaps I need to get into the comics for the details I want. The portrayals of the Red Guardian and Taskmaster didn't bother me at all the way it seems to bother those with deeper knowledge/obsession.

Wow. What an overrated yo-yo of a movie. Where to start...

If you're a Nirvana fan, then you'll be pleased to hear one of the worst cover songs of all time ruin one of the very few coherent sequences early on in the film. Thank goodness for Disney+ and the mute button.

Performances are great (but so were the performances in X-Men Origins... hmmm....) This is fact & undeniable. Everyone is perfectly cast and really do have fantastic character moments which take place in fun and heartwarming scenes that a neatly speckled throught.

But there's the problem. They're just moments. Small ones.

The real bummer issues are the story and the action.

Action. Almost every part of this is overblown and ridiculous.
What are Romanov's abilities exactly? Surving obviously fatal falls (apparently the writers hadn't seen Endgame) and explosions are, now. The general over-the-top ridiculousness from action sequence to action sequence don't necessarily feel like they're possible in any reality, which really affects believability in a story that attempts to be grounded. Sure, it's Marvel and you expect a certain level of death defying stunts, but this turns it up to 11 too many times.

In particular there's one old beat up vehicle that can either heal itself or all vehicles of this type can take hundreds of high calibre rounds whilst not skipping a beat. The sequence itself is bloated and the events are so unbelievably silly that saying it's plain dumb is being kind.

I've always said that any good film, no matter it's genre, should have an element of mystery. Black Widow attempts this in two ways and fails spectacularly at both. "Oh my - who is Taskmaster?" There's so many choices, no, wait up, there's only one.

Anyone familiar with the "twist" of Agent 13's true nature in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier will have flashbacks on this subject. A very heavy handed approach that may induce a groan in any audience member who finshed grade school. Pass or fail.

The other is the ending. Well, if it worked in Captain America: Winter Soldier (the movie, not the series) then why not do it again huh. Like EXACTLY like CA:WS. The big "gotchya" moment on the bad-guy is telegraphed so blatantly in the scenes leading up to the point that it's embarrassing. The fact that this reveal happens moments apart from the Taskmaster reveal honestly felt like a slap in the face.

Sure, there are other films that talk down to the audience, but when a double mystery-reveal this dumb happens it's hard not to laugh at the poor story telling on show.

There are more WTF moments in this film, but they venture into spoiler territory. Here's some non-spoiler clues for those who have seen it...

Terrific disguise.
Smells can be moved away from.
"Don't do it!!!" - do what, we don't know what those things are that she's holding...
On the run, on the run, on the run? Nah eff it.

All in all, despite the terrific performances, this is an action/mystery flick. For morons. It has zero re-watchability and for the most part the key points feel like a dumb guys attempt at being smart. The direction is middling. But everything else is standard Marvel fair ie. A perfectly acceptable production.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Black Widow isn’t the worst standalone feature Marvel Studios has ever made, but it isn’t the best, either. The cast and chemistry is what works best about the film. David Harbour and Florence Pugh are the highlights of the movie for me as they inject some really nice humor and play off of Scarlett Johansson very well. The chemistry between Natasha and Yelena carries a lot of scenes in this movie that would’ve felt weird and awkward otherwise, and I can’t wait to see Florence be Yelena again in future installments. The family dynamic is where this movie shines and has its biggest emotional impacts. The action and fight sequences are good for the most part and meet the standards set by other MCU installments, but they aren’t anything special and remain fairly consistent with MCU formula. The story and script are decent, but there are other directions they could’ve been taken both in that might’ve worked better for the movie. I was hoping this movie would give General Ross a bit more screen time and focus more on him chasing Natasha, which would’ve worked in more with the ending of Civil War and Natasha’s story between Civil War and Infinity War. The Red Room feels a bit underexplored in this film and there are core themes that could’ve used more development to give the movie more emotional and real-world impact. The villain is also nothing special; while Taskmaster does have a twist that caught me off guard, overall Taskmaster is a bit of an underwhelming villain and doesn’t seem to pose too much of a threat to our heroes or raise the stakes very high. In addition to General Ross feeling underutilized, Clint Barton feels like a missed opportunity. I was hoping he’d have a bigger role in this film, and that simply doesn’t happen which is unfortunate because he and Natasha have a very close bond in the MCU. I’m also very curious to know what Natasha said to Ross that stopped her from being thrown in jail, as that feels like a plot hole to me that needed to be explained. While Black Widow does have some redeeming qualities, it’s a bit of a letdown considering how long we had to wait for it and doesn’t live up to the standards set by other MCU movies. Expand

What's it like?: This tells the story of Black Widow after the events of Captain America: Civil War (CA:CW). She is now wanted by Secretary Ross, and ended up meeting up with her original 'family'.

Mid- or post-credit scenes: One post-credit scene.

Positive: It's better than Captain Marvel...?

Negatives: 1. This film's storyline is mostly inconsequential to what happens after CA:CW.
2. The villains' HQ is ridiculous and unrealistic physics-wise.
3. The arch villain is of the MCU-cliched throw-away kind. How would the different age groups rate it?

Children:Poor; Teens:Poor; Young adults:Average; Medium-age adults:Average; Old adults:Poor.

Rating: 3/5 (no half scores). Skip it. Save your money and watch it on TV.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. 6.5 out of 10. The opening scenes through the opening credits were all fantastic. The entire movie was entertaining, albeit formulaic. The fight choreography was a return to form after the abysmal choreography in Falcon and Winter Soldier. David Harbour and Florence Pugh steal the show. Rachel Weisz didn't get enough screen time but she was effective in every scene she was in. Taskmaster was an intimidating villain. Taskmaster's reveal was incredibly predictable, but that's not necessarily a bad thing (I had an old Lit teacher who once said that truly unpredictable twists are a sign of bad/lazy writing). Only major cons were one bit about the third act and that Ray Winstone was a forgettable and unintimidating villain. I'm not one to complain about a climactic/fantastical third act. However, pulling a parachute whilst debris is falling all around you would have almost definitely led to Yelena's death. Either her parachute would have been compromised and she'd have fallen to her death or she'd have been crushed/cut apart by the falling debris. I thought that bit was fairly lazy writing.

Even after giving the movie a 6.5, I think this movie was solid but ultimately wasted potential. Rather than telling a story that links Civil War's Natasha with Infinity War/End Game's Natasha - bringing closure to her character and potentially improving upon the emotional connection the audience has with her character in those films - we got a movie that seemed to focus on setting up future stories with new characters. Now for the fan fiction re-writes that nobody really cares about... Although it may seem like a bigger waste to some people, I think Melina should have truly been revealed to be a villain and died in the final act, Alexei/Red Guardian should have sacrificed himself to save his "daughters" from Taskmaster, and Yelena should have been presumed dead (revealed to be alive in the end credits scene, which wouldn't have had to change) after she blew up Dreykov's aircraft. Yes, it would have been tragic. However, it would have amplified her sacrifice in End Game by emphasizing her determination to protect her "family" as well as ensuring her best friend was able to see his biological family again. Just my two cents...

Review in pills - Black Widow

PRO:
- one of the best incipits and first parts of the whole MCU;
- in-depth insight into the character of Natasha and the narrative strand connected to her: huge pity not to have developed it before (not necessarily with a film, but through a TV series) because the whole story of espionage and her pre-Avengers would have had a enormous potential (so much so that it can create a separate narrative arc connected, but not focused on superheroes);
- photography and visual look: good;
- movie that entertains: it does better than many other MCU movies;
- first small reference of a link with the series: post-credit scene that binds to Falcon & the Winter Soldier.

CONS:
- drop in the second and third part: apparently repetitive in the mechanics;
- CGI not always constant;
-black widow too over power: very often (maybe too much) it seems that Natasha does and survives almost as if she had taken the super soldier serum;
- role of Taskmaster: different from the original (ok no problem, common practice), but although there is, I did not find him/her so incisive in the story and in the character (especially after being presented as the villain of the film);
- Taskmaster stunt: in several scenes you would notice the change of physicality and person between the stunt (a man - Andrew "Andy" Lister) and the actress who would give the face and body in some scenes to the character (Olga Kurylenko).

VOTE:
6.5
Although appreciated more than many other MCU films due to constant postponements, the film seemed old compared to the phase and type of storytelling Marvel would be in (as the same would seem from the trailers for the Shang-Chi film (happy to wrong)) and this would inevitably lead to a low level of interest in the film.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Before I get any hate for this rating, just know that I still really enjoy the MCU even if every so often, one of their films/shows falls flat for me. There is a lot of fun to be had here. This is the only Marvel film that had some good jokes and made me chuckle which is incredibly rare for a Marvel film. Florence Pugh and David Harbour bring a lot of great comedic timing to their performances that definitely elevates them from boring sidekicks. Their characters are actually interesting and feel much more involved in the story. I hope we get to see those two in the future again. Although their Russian accents do need a little bit of work. Scarlett Johansson is good. Her performance is fine. She doesn’t do a bad job but there is a lot to be desired especially considering this is her final appearance in the MCU (film wise not timeline wise). Rachel Weisz was fine as well but her character felt very forgettable and bland which sucks because she just falls into the background whenever other characters show up on screen. The main villain is absolutely awful. It’s honestly a contender for worst MCU villain. His motivations are almost nonexistent and he exists only to yell and exposit. The characters build up that he’ll be hard to kill but he just kinda dies without the influence of the characters which really defeats the purpose of them mentioning how hard he is to kill. Taskmaster is an interesting side villain but ultimately contributes nothing to the plot except as closure for Black Widow’s forgettable side mission. The action scenes are kinda bland. If this was an earlier MCU film it would feel a lot better but because the MCU has bumped out some great action scenes, this just feels flat and boring. The visual effects are really spotty. Sometimes they look good and sometimes they look really really bad but the visual effects are usually pretty good. The story is very forgettable. It revolves around Black Widow taking down the Red Room again but the sequence of events is so bland and forgettable. I can’t remember some sequence of events relating to the story. It was nice to hear a little bit more about the Budapest adventure but it makes me wish we had got that movie instead of this. I placed this above Ant-Man but below Captain America 1 in my MCU Ranking. If you like the MCU then you’ll probably enjoy this but if you aren’t super invested in this universe then you can skip this. Expand

Stop watching after the second act and this is an OK film, as it spirals in the third. The worst part is the real villain gets away without consequences. Unsurprising, given that I subsequently found out that one of the writers is the writer of "Wandvision." If you haven't watched that series (don't), but the same thing happens. Well, in that series the real villain is lauded as a hero.

Florence Pugh is the highlight of the movie (well, it should, it's really her film). Johansson phones in her performance. I think the only reason I'm being so hard on this film is that I've wanted a Black Widow film for over a decade. This could have been a great Manchurian Candidate meets Borne Identity, but no.

If we take into account the eagerness that existed in a large part of the global audiences to see a new Marvel movie, I must say that Black Widow is very late to the party.

And the truth is that I'm not talking about the delays it suffered due to the pandemic, but because this is the first movie that openly does not contribute anything to the MCU.

I could make a similar case for Iron Man 3, but by now it's irrelevant.

Black Widow is Scarlett Johansson's swan song.
A belated farewell, and at the same time completely useless.

I say this more than anything because I personally believe the actress deserved a much more dignified farewell than the one she received in Avengers: Endgame.
Certainly going back to the past in this movie gives her character a marked undertone, but it's one that no longer works because her character is dead.

And even worse for Johansson, her last participation in the MCU becomes the launch of the young woman who comes to replace her, and take the mantle of her character.

Another point that I must emphasize, and that in my view Black Widow aggravates, is how the MCU is separating and becoming two very different entities.

In the comic book it works because you can tell different stories from different perspectives, but in the movies it will be very difficult to re-converge the lesser characters with the more powerful as the scale of events continues to increase.

Marvel is targeting the cosmic side of its universe, and as it does so, it's also opening the doors of the multiverse.
Just by seeing the events of WandaVision and Loki this is more than clear.
Much more powerful enemies and worlds are approaching, and frankly characters like the new Captain America, the Winter Soldier, U.S. Agent, and a new Black Widow simply aren't up to the task of competing on that scale.
Does anyone remember what Hawkeye was doing in the final battle of Avengers: Endgame? I mean, it's not that hard to see.

Black Widow has the well-known Marvel formula, and entertaining yourself with it for a while is not bad at all, but I can't deny that this time it feels wearisome because there is nothing at stake.
Whatever others say, this was just Florence Pugh's introduction.

Perhaps due to Scarlett Johansson's level of stardom, she got a movie for her character, but this could have been a Disney + show and there would've been no problem.

What is more jarring that this came out after Endgame which concluded her story. Nevertheless, it is here and I was still kind of hype for it despite it all. So is this another MCU hit or a miss?

Firstly, the supporting cast is all stellar. David Harbour as Red Guardian was hilarious and he was incredibly charming even if his character was kind of an ass. Rachel Weisz was also great as Melina, the fake mother of Natasha, as she gives a performance that conveys the conflict her character is going through yet also being quite lovable. Florence Pugh as Yelena, Natasha's sister, is the true stand out in this film. Her performance is so charismatic and charming while also being a proper badass. Her character has the most vulnerability compared to everyone else and Florence's shows this by really delivering on the emotional performance. She also has great chemistry with Scarlett Johansson so the interaction between Yelena and Natasha are some of the biggest highlights of Black Widow. Scarlett is also still phenomenal as Natasha and she still delivers here as well. We get to see more emotion from her character which allows Scarlett to do a lot more and shine in these scenes. The music score is composed by legendary composer Lorne Balfe and he continues to make another amazing score for Black Widow. Every action scene feels more hype whenever his score is being blasted and it's just awesome. The emotional scenes become more emotional and the tense scenes become more tense thanks to his score. I also really love the action scenes, for the most part. The hand-to-hand fights felt gritty and brutal which made it very entertaining to watch. There is also a pretty cool car chase and a fight where Black Widow has to fight countless other Red Room assassins which were very enjoyable as well. However, the story is quite a mixed bag for me thanks to how it is executed. The movie does a lot of telling of her past rather than showing which is kind of disappointing. I think seeing the red ledger stuff she did as a Red Room assassin would've given the ending more impact. Additionally, Black Widow explores the theme of family but handles it quite poorly. Natasha confronting her fake family is emotional stuff and the movie does show it but it would then deflect it with a silly joke which did get annoying. This is terrible when it came to the dad, Red Guardian. The movie treats him like a joke even though he did an incredibly terrible thing that caused his fake daughters to dislike him. There is a moment where he does start trying to repair his relationship with his daughters which was very sweet but the story doesn't stay long enough on this. He also doesn't get a moment to show how much he cares for his daughter which disappointed me. I did have my issue with how jokes are used in MCU movies but I think it is more annoying here than it is in previous MCU movies. The story is also very low stakes and because of Endgame, there doesn't feel like there is much danger to our main characters.

The action scenes near the end are quite disappointing as well. There is a fight between the Red Guardian and Taskmaster which sounds on paper cool as both have some kind of superpower. However, the editing had lots of cuts with also constantly cutting away to something else which made it jarring. Additionally, Red Guardian, despite having super strength, never gets to show this in the fight. There is also a final fight between Black Widow and Taskmaster at the end which is mostly a CGI fest but is also incredibly short as well. It was a disappointing final fight for sure. On that note, the villains in Black Widow are also very disappointing. Dreykov, the leader of the Red Room, doesn't even have much of a presence on the plot until 40 minutes in. Even when they start appearing, they still have no presence as the plot is more focused on getting the family together than villains doing something. Taskmaster may be the most disappointing villain in MCU history. They are such a deviation from the comic as Taskmaster never speaks ever. There is also a reveal about Taskmaster that is just lame. Overall, Black Widow is a movie I feel so incredibly conflicted about. The story and villains are quite poor but there are moments in it that are very good. The characters and performances by actors are all great but some characters don't get enough to shine. The action scenes are entertaining but it does stumble near the end. Black Widow is a movie with a lot of good that contains some bumps throughout. In the end, I am glad it finally came out and I enjoyed watching it even though it does feel a bit too late.

Jump forward to her adult iteration, as she fights to (wait for it) save the world. There are expected action beats throughout, most of them noisy, but lacking much new in approach or wow factor. What slows down the pace is the preponderance of family drama that attempts to add emotional resonance. Harbour, as the failed Red Guardian, provides a few lighter moments. While this movie checks off the usual boxes for the genre, it adds nothing original to the legacy. NOTE: Sit thru the credits for a surprise cameo and a hint at a future conflict. Expand

I'd throw a 6/10 on this one. If' im approaching this from a film standpoint and not just a 'sit back and eat popcorn' it's a 6. Popcorn? 8. No Marvel movie goes above 9 IMO, so keep this in mind. Overall the biggest complaint was just the feel, this REALLY felt like something made 5-6 years ago, pre Infinity War. It should have been made then and it would have hit even better. Expand

This movie should have been only 1hr and 30 minutes long as at times it drags along, that said it has good action sequences, barred from logic (common sense), it's a nice farewell to a marvel character

mediocrity at its best, not the worst standalone marvel film but far from the best. placed awkwardly at the beginning of the Phase four this overdue conclusion to Natasha Romanoff story had all the odds against itself. shortland directionmediocrity at its best, not the worst standalone marvel film but far from the best. placed awkwardly at the beginning of the Phase four this overdue conclusion to Natasha Romanoff story had all the odds against itself. shortland direction seems adequate but when the story is written this colorless what can any one do but grit their teeth and wait for it to be over?

the unpredictable delays caused by the pandemic made the release of black widow a cartoonish event with 'featuretts' that were meant to maintain the hype around the movie adversely revealed 85% of it without a actual release in sight but even when it dropped the disappointment seemed to echo alongside worry at this clumsy start.

on its positive side black widow nails it's balance of heartwarming family comedy and action. and almost it's casting(that task master reveal was a huge misstep imo ).david harbor is a phenomenal addition o the marvel universe ,a minefield of punch lines & physical comedy and likewise florence pugh as yelena is just stellar, the gift that keeps on giving. another obvious misstep is how empty and bland Natasha feels in her own movie, her trauma narrowly explored and always the most underwhelming performance in her scenes. the plot also felt very inconsequential and easily overcame, the stakes were either low or unrealistic(even for a marvel movie).

just like captain marvel before it this is another mishandled heroine fronted blockbuster that despite having significant award winning stars involved result in a very uneven story that you can barely invest yourself in

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Whilst I am glad the MCU has finally given its first female superhero her own solo film, Natasha Romanoff does not feel like the main character in her own story.

The film does a nice job delving into Natasha as a character, but only provides glimpses of her background - one that acts as social commentary for child trafficking, an aspect of the film brought up during the intro sequence but is otherwise largely ignored for the rest of the film. One of the bigger problems that seem consistent across all Marvel Studios productions, is how they add humor inappropriately during points of the film where it tries to deal with serious topics. In Black Widow, a saving grace is that the comedy was fairly enjoyable.

Black Widow also suffers from Marvel Studios' villain problem, where its primary antagonists are barely characters and more so plot points that exist for a conflict to occur. We learn very little about Natasha's rivals and they ultimately felt like unnecessary and uninteresting additions to the MCU.

The best aspect of the film to me was the cast. Scarlett Johansson reprises her role as Natasha Romanoff and does an excellent job in the role as usual. Joining her are Florence Pugh, Rachel Weisz, and David Harbour who make up the most enjoyable and heartfelt moments in the film.

Anyways this movie is just so average and was not worth the two-year wait. Expand

The handful of times "Black Widow" tried to be funny, it worked. A couple of the action sequences weren't bad. Most of the time, though, it was just insufferable. I give it a D, just don’t bother.

So many women in an action movie dont work. This is so simple. Especially when they are fighting without weapons it is ridiculous.
and there is another bad part in the movie: the action is so unrealistic, more than in many previous Marvel

and there is another bad part in the movie: the action is so unrealistic, more than in many previous Marvel movies. The story is not that bad, but a revenge movie in the core. The villain? Not so interesting, just like in many other Marvel movies.
Humour? I didnt see any humour.

Is there any good point in the movie? Florence Pugh is hot.

This is an average movie and easily one of the worst MCU films. The story feels very similar to many superhero films that we've seen and feels a little bit poorly paced. That said, it has great action sequences which everyone will enjoy.
