Easily one of the worse Marvel movies ever made. 100% copy of the winter soldier. Russians taking over minds. The only difference is this is with women. there are not enough communists in this movie!!! I only watched it because there were communists in the trailer and you know what? there was only like 5 minutes of pure communists. and guess what?? they were being killed!! that is sothere are not enough communists in this movie!!! Excellent movie. The whole "free will over control" narrative was well written and produced. Scarlett did an amazing job in her last role as Black Widow. But, Pugh stole the show. Scarlett did an amazing job in her last role as Black Widow. But, Pugh stole the show. Pugh was absolutely brilliant in her role. Rachel Weisz was excellent as well. Loved the dinner table scene! David Harbour was very funny and enjoyable. William Hurt continues to not disappoint as the infamous Thunderbolt Ross. The post-credits, through it was originally suppose to occur before "Falcon & Winter Solider" still worked very well and it doesn't confuse the audience (at least those who already watched F&WS). Scarlett did an amazing job in her tenue with the MCU. She will be missed, but Pugh showed that she's more than ready to take up the mantle in future MCU projects. Criticisms: 1. I think Taskmaster could had been utilized better. The concept behind Taskmaster's presence in the film was fine, but I think the film should had given a few minutes to Taskmaster's character development. 2. Some things within the film felt rushed, but that's ok since those who are well up to date with the MCU knows about Johansson's character and can let the rush slide. 3. While this film was well worth the wait and the delays, the Black Widow stand alone film in my opinion should had came much sooner, and should had been part of the Infinity Saga (Phase 3 to be precise) timeline instead of having it be the Phase 4 opener. The actions scenes were excellent. And the overall narrative of the film is very relatable from a philosophical, psychological, and institutional lens. Anyone who has held the gender biased assumption that a majority female cast and a female lead couldn't deliver an exciting and great action film should be quiet. Black Widow proves beyond anymore ridiculous doubt among with "Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel" that a female lead in an action flick most definitely can deliver. Along with the fact that this film had an over 90% female cast. Too bad we endured a pandemic. Because this film would had easily earned a billion in the box office. But, no doubt Black Widow will earn way more past it's 200 million budget. So, Disney should be able to rest easy in this investment. Finally, it's clear so far in Phase 4 that Marvel isn't losing any steps. "WandaVision", "Falcon & Winter Solider", "Loki", and now this film has all delivered magnificently. The quality of Marvel Studios films continues to surpass expectations of excellent story telling, and making the films very, very relatable to the public. It makes any fan anxiously anticipating "Shang-Chi", "Eternals", "Spiderman- No Way Home", The Dr. Strange, Thor, Antman, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Black Panther sequels. Along with the Disney+ shows: "She-Hulk, Ms. Marvel, "Secret Invasion", "Ironheart", "Armor Wars", and "Hawkeye", and "What If?". And oh course- hopefully the next Fantastic Four will finally get it right since Disney acquired it when it bought Fox. Great film and it looks Marvel is getting better and better!… Expand

Takes me back to the early days of the MCU. Before there were massive crossovers, intergalactic threats, and now parallel universes. A time when it was just a single hero in a relatively grounded conflict that didn't leave earth or enterTakes me back to the early days of the MCU. A time when it was just a single hero in a relatively grounded conflict that didn't leave earth or enter another plane of existence. Heck, the title character doesn't even have powers which gives the action a Jason Bourne or Mission Impossible vibe. It's also unconcerned with throwing a constant barrage of humor at the audience making this the most tonally serious superhero movie we've received since the last time a Zack Snyder work was released in theaters.

Set not long after the events of Civil War, the plot sees Natasha Romanoff taking on a secret shadow organization with ties to her past. Not since Ant-Man and the Wasp has a Marvel flick been so self-contained and detached from moving the overall cinematic world it takes place in forward at all. As a result, it is totally skippable as you won't be missing anything in the grander story of the MCU should you choose not to watch it. Black Widow does still have value though in that it takes a hero who for years has sat alongside Hawkeye as the lamest, most out of place feeling member of The Avengers and actually provides a reason to give a crap about her. The emotional journey the former KGB agent goes on and the unique bond she shares with her supporting cast/family finally grants her a moment in the spotlight when in the past she's been little more than someone who was just sort of there and didn't really contribute much.

Not every issue with the heroine has been fixed however. I've always felt Kevin Fiege and crew have played it a little loose with the character's abilities to make up for the lack of girl power present in the "Earth's Mightiest Heroes." I understand she's a highly trained and physically fit individual, but there's nothing here that says she's expressly any more resistant to damage than you or I so seeing her walk away from moments that should have killed or at the very least seriously injured a non-superhuman with hardly a scratch is egregiously unbelievable. That combined with the fact that some of the narrative's big reveals are incredibly predictable are what keep this from achieving perfection.

Still, in an era when this franchise is focused on adapting the weirdest, wildest, and most grandiose chapters of its comic counterparts, it's nice to get something that hearkens back to the scale and scope of the first Iron Man while sporting an espionage thriller style that calls to mind The Winter Soldier. It's also the only time a director not named James Gunn has been able to make their distinctive presence felt in a MCU project. I would love to see Cate Shortland helm another entry maybe centered around Yelena Belova or, if my dreams come true, Red Guardian. So despite admittedly being a couple of films and a few miniseries behind, this is what currently has my vote as the best post-Endgame content to come out thus far.… Expand

There’s some fun in between the family drama and the family comedy stuff. David Harbour (Stranger Things) does steal the show despite the film not going for that. Florence Pugh also is a scene stealer from Scarlett Johansson.

Though Pugh and Johansson don’t get much to always do. Other than talk about daddy issues or how crappy their childhoods were.
While Taskmaster is wasted and should have been a main villain in a Captain America film or even on Falcon and Winter Soldier. They just shouldn’t have used that name at all in this movie.
This film was supposed to set the return of the Marvel universe last year. It was delayed due to Covid. Shows like Wandavision, Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Loki are better. They also make us more excited for what’s next than this movie does.… Expand

the opening scene of this movie is kind of cringey, they should have gotten a famous singer to make a theme song and had a james bond style title scene, that would have been so cool.

it kind of sucks that this is the movie they made for her, it feel like they just wanted to introduce new characters into the franchise and they used her film to do so. the action scenes and performances are great but black widow deserves better than this.

overall still a pretty good action film. not the beacon of of light for female led films in the MCU but nonetheless still a good addition to the franchise.

p.s. taskmaster was a really big let down and ray winston was comically bad. i think he was supposed to be a " men with power " are evil type of character but the message was way to heavy handed.… Expand

but even then
taskmaster was boring
i didn't have any attention watching i litteraly didn't recognize the father and mother
until they said somthing like the familie is back together or somthing

and the villain can't be hit because she smells him? wtf doesn't even do anything for a character who made black widow he has to be powerful but does abosolute sh#t… Expand

Despite sometimes giving into tired tropes Black Widow manages to be an enjoyable spy and family story largely disconnected from the rest of the MCU.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie was terrible. I knew the moment it was announced that taskmaster would be the antagonist that they wouldn’t do him justice. Taskmaster should be a badass! Not… this. this is sad, black widow didn’t even do anything in this movie! every time her and taskmaster met, something completely out of both of their control happens to thwart taskmaster, the plot armor on black widow here through the entire movie is thick as a brick wall. no, thicker, because taskmaster in this movie breaks through many walls, but the average strength, not computer brained human scarlet johansson can still match her in hand to hand combat. if you’re looking for a fun marvel movie, this isn’t it. if you’re looking for a good taskmaster, this also isn’t it. if you want a satisfying black widow story, try again! what you get from this movie is a mediocre action movie, with callbacks to the universe it takes place in; like if at the end of a bad diehard remake superman came up and said “good job bruce willis!”
please don’t waste your time or money, just rewatch ragnarok or guardians for the fiftieth time.… Expand

In the aftermath of the events of Captain America: Civil War, we catch our favorite femme fatale on the run and facing enemies old and new with both the US government and the Russian Red Room on her tail.

Florence Pugh is introduced as the heir-apparent to the seemingly irreplaceable Natasha Romanoff, but carries herself with grace, poise and immense likeability. Her chemistry with Johansson is electric and makes you buy into the sisters' journey and shared pain easily.

David Harbour is incredible as the 'Red Guardian'', the weathered the former Russian counterpart to Captain America. Rachel Weisz and him are spot on as the parental figures, essaying the pain and suffering they have undergone with authenticity and realism. Ray Winstone is his icy, brutish best as the main antagonist.

The key standout element of the film was the excellently choreographed hand-to-hand combat sequences, really raising the level of Marvel movies to Bourne-esque realms.

Watch out for not one but two surprise guest appearances that not only tie into the upcoming MCU films but also continue the intricate world-building happening through the Disney+ series' Loki, TFATWS and Wanda Vision.

Black Widow is a Natasha Romanoff show through and through, a fitting tribute to a founding Avenger and a role that has been portrayed with such perfection by Scarlett Johansson for over a decade now.

Highly recommended! Marvel's first movie of 2021 is a surefire blockbuster!… Expand

Cate Shortland has gave us one of the most impacting MCU films. Her vision about Natasha and all of her background is one of the best things that we´ve seen in this huge franchise. The handful of times "Black Widow" tried to be funny, it worked. A couple of the action sequences weren't bad. Most of the time, though, it was just insufferable. I give it a D, just don’t bother.
