The film is quite different from most MCU films and I appreciate the representation of the film, however it is very forgettable with little to no WOW factor.

Watched Black Panther yesterday. Good movie overall, but definitely overrated.

For once, the MCU entertainment formula didn't serve its purpose in a movie where the absence of formulaic comedy would have been gladly taken.

As opposed to Thor: Ragnarok, The Avengers or Iron Man, Black Panther had several opportunities to make the jump from 'everyday comic book movie' to Sci-Fi Must - as 'Star Wars' Must, the kind of must where you can picture yourself wandering in Wakanda, a fictive country with a universe bigger to discover than all of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole.

So what can we say about this movie? Well, obviously the missed opportunities to reach higher grounds. Which appears more and more frustrating as the movie goes on.

Is it true to the MCU? Yes, sure.

Too much? Yes, as the limit can be seen from the moment when the plot is given straight forward, just like every other MCU movie where this formulaic template follows. From then on, the magic you felt up to the second half of the movie is slowly fading away.

So much potential going to waste yet again, thanks to a cinematic universe.

If you are a Marvel fan, watch it.

If you're more into movies, don't.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First I gotta say is not as good as everyone says it is it is a good movie but it has problems. First Micheal B. Jordan great actor well cast as Killmonger but it didn't feel right as to this point Micheal B. Jordan had portrayed the protagonist. His character was well written and I felt as he should not have been killed off he should have been kept around for the sequel. A positive is its limited amount of action scenes the movie is mostly about Waknada and its politicians and it does knot have a lot of action scenes but when thy come there amazing this movie has great effects, great directing, great cinematography, I definitely recommend this movie but dont let the hype get to you Expand

And so Marvel finally make an excellent film. Essentially a Hip Hop Lion King.

Strong female characters, a complex baddie who actually might just be on the right side. Limited action (which always bores me), this is a sweeping romantic, epic.

The tragedy is Black Panther will become a minor character in Avengers 6 now.

Definitely the worst thing about this movie is its cg effects, they look very unfinished and fake. However even with the worst of marvel's effects, this movie was still really great. Expand

+Wakanda and the world building is really good
+The more political movie differentiates it from other MCU and superhero movies and it really works
+ The story is interesting and the character development for T.Challa really works
+The music for this movie is phenomenal
+ Killmonger is a really good MCU villain with an actual sympathetic backstory and believable motivation with a great performance by Michael B Jordan

- Killmonger does not have enough screen time and it takes half the movie for him to actually make a presence
- The action scenes apart from the casino/Korea are all bland and forgettable which is really bad especially for a superhero movie
- The CGI is really noticeable and is absolutely terrible in the final fight

Minor Nitpicks
.The first after credit scene really should've just been the ending though it is understandable to end where the film began
.Since this film is set right after Civil war, it is kind of weird how they brushed over T.Chaka's death

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Black Panther offers a fresh, new perspective from the washed down, mediocre genre Marvel is famous for. It is directed by Ryan Coogler, known for his previous movies Creed and Fruitvale Station. The movie follows the main protagonist T’Challa, played by Chadwick Boseman, who is both king and the legendary Black Panther, protector of the fictional African country of Wakand

The opening scenes feature much needed exposition, explaining how millions of years ago a meteorite made entirely of “Vibranium” struck Africa, giving the flora unique properties. One such fruit gives the user Black Panther’s superhuman abilities. As such, the Black Panther is tasked with protecting the nation of Wakanda safe from outside influence. This leads to conflict later on as the Black Panther of the modern world is tasked with either keeping traditions or embracing outside contact to the modern world. The second exposition sequence features a flashback of T’Challa’s uncle living in Oakland and getting mixed up in urban gangs. This scene sets up the hard hitting underlying theme of urban struggles minorities face. Next, the movie cuts to T’Challa being coronated king of Wakanda, setting up his struggle with his close advisors and even his own family members.

Black Panther broke many boundaries with its almost entirely black main cast. This is especially fitting as he was Marvel’s first black superhero, being first introduced in 1966. The acting, for the most part, was everything you would expect from a multi-billion dollar company. The acting by Andy Serkis as Ulysses Klaue, one of the main protagonists, and Forest Whitaker’s role as T’Challa’s mentor Zuri especially stood out to me. The acting had both Marvel’s light-heartedness and natural weight when it needed to. Coogler’s directing was the best thing to happen to Marvel’s ever expanding universe. If you have seen 2015’s Creed, you will understand Coogler’s unique directing style emphasizes the character’s motivation and sense of reality.
In Black Panther, there is almost a sense of two movies being put together into one. The first one being the classic Marvel movie, action-packed and thrilling to watch. And the second one having a genuinely distinct sense of authenticity in Coogler’s directing. If someone were to edit all the action out of the movie, you would not be able to tell it is a Marvel movie. It was honestly disarming to be able to feel real emotion coming from a Marvel movie. It has a more realistic, grittier tone than any other Marvel movie, it almost felt like a Dark Knight Movie, and I liked it.

The themes established early in the movie are clearly resolved by the end, which is rare for any superhero movie to get right. This is arguably Coogler’s biggest achievement with the film. In the end, after the main antagonist is defeated, T’Challa does the right thing. He opens up Wakanda to the world and establishes social outreach programs throughout the world. It offered a perfect ending to the film.

Marvel took a risk bringing on Coogler, and it paid off, big time. I don’t think any other director could have made a better adaptation of Black Panther. It is definitely a film to check out, or atleast watch on Netflix in a few months. I look forward to see what Coogler does in the future, hopefully Marvel brings him back to work on their other movies.

Sure the actors were ok. Sure the story was ok. And again, it served its purpose. It kept me entertained. But it wasn't precisely high art. It was just entertaining.

If You expect politics with this one, better know your real world politics first. Wakanda is pretty much as Nationalistic as South Africa was during Apartheid. So please. Try to leave the politics out of it and see it as entertainment.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have to say, while it is an entertaining movie, it is not the monstruous marvel most people are claming it out to be. I don't know if it was the fact that the Black Panther was teased and introduced in Civil War in a way that made me heighten my expectations, but I came out heavily disappointed.

The visuals are good, taking out some details here and there, but while I was expecting them to elaborate more on T'Challa's character, I found out it was just an empty shell when it came to character development and an engaging plot. I honestly expected a lot more than I've got, and there wasn't a single redeeming quality throughout the film that could save it. It seems that it was placed to glorify black actors that, while they have been underappreciated, it just was made in such a way that turned overall ridiculous, like a sort of 'empowerment' and 'coolness' that just wasn't there because the writers didn't bother with a well-developed script. They could have made a much more interesting story out of what they had to work with, and instead it just felt like a b-side to merely set some background for what's to come (infinity war).

T'Challa's character was bland and uninteresting, lacked a backbone and depth. A major disappointment, since he was depicted differently in CACW. Nakia was plain as well, which I found unfair for such a talented actress, and while they tried to make her more at some points, I felt like their efforts fell flat. Her kiss at the end with the king had as much chemistry as the one between Sharon and Steve in CACW. I wish they stopped pushing pointless 'romantic' relationships and focused more on the characters as complex people and their development.

Shuri was so-so. I feel like I would have liked her more if they'd worked more on her, but whatever. The villain's motivations where aimless and clichéd, and I feel like everyone is trying to make him more than what he really is. A resented child in a disfunctional home who thinks it's okay to bend everyone to their will because he says so. Boring.

The rest of the characters... don't even ask me. When you make the secondary characters be as uninteresting as they managed here, despite having good things to work with, you know you're doing a **** job.

(By the way, Okoye and W'Kabi's relationship? Pointless, unnecessary, they tried to add depth to their actions by taking this shortcut. No wonder it failed).

Overall, it was entertaining, the kind of entertaining you find a movie on a sunday when you're home bored and have nothing else to watch. Eat some popcorn, watch some mindless entertainment. I think actually some movies should be made for the sake of entertainment alone, but not all of them. And honestly? This sort of crossed the line.

Wakanda Forever!

Marvel’s Black Panther will forever hold a place in Academy Awards history as the very first superhero movie to be nominated for Best Picture. It is also only the second comic book movie to be nominated for Best Picture—the first was Skippy in 1931 (which was my favorite of the Best Picture nominees for that year). Black Panther is also notable for being a major studio movie that features a predominantly black cast and crew. It was the highest grossing film of 2018, received critical acclaim, and now has been nominated for 7 Academy Awards. Despite all of that, Black Panther is most notable of all for standing out amongst the din and spectacle other superhero movies and giving us memorable characters and a new and exciting country: Wakanda.

The fictional African nation of Wakanda is a feast for the eyes. The costumes for its people blend traditional African motifs with a sleek futuristic sensibility with creative and impressive results; it’s no surprise costume designer Ruth E. Carter has received an Oscar nomination for her work. Production designers Hannah Beachler and Jay Hart have received much deserved Oscar nominations for creating the look of Wakanda. The visuals of both interiors and exteriors are exciting and dazzling. The design for the snowy mountain homeland of Wakanda’s reclusive Jabari tribe alone deserves an Academy Award. Most of all the production design creates a high-tech futuristic place that feels like it could be a part of the real world.

Of course, Black Panther is woven into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The African superhero first appeared in Captain America: Civil War, where the king of Wakanda was killed by terrorists making his son, Prince T’Challa, unexpectedly king. T’Challa also became the Black Panther, protector of Wakanda, aided by a super suit and magical potion that gives him super strength. The brilliance of the screenplay by director Ryan Coogler and co-writer Joe Robert Cole is it does not require you to have seen other Marvel superhero movies to enjoy or understand the characters or plot. This might be the most accessible film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe aside from the first Iron Man back in 2008.

Chadwick Boseman plays T’Challa/Black Panther and he does a good job of playing not just a believable superhero but also a believable leader of a country. Though T’Challa is the main character, the stand out characters and performances are in the supporting cast. Michael B. Jordan as Killmonger is easily the most memorable and interesting villain of any Marvel movie. Killmonger is a living breathing person (not just a big CGI bully like Thanos) with understandable though not admirable motivations. T’Challa’s allies are the mostly female and all badass warriors and scientists of Wakanda. Letitia Wright plays Shuri, T’Challa’s younger sister. She is the Q to his James Bond, inventing cutting-edge, high-tech gadgets and since they’re siblings the characters have a lively back and forth banter. Lupita Nyong’o is T’Challa’s ex-girlfriend and Wakanda’s chief spy, Nakia. Danai Gurirais Okoye, Wakanda’s tough and unflappable general. Martin Freemanis good comic relief as a fish-out-water CIA agent awestruck by Wakanda.

I think part of the reason for Black Panther’s success with audiences and critics and the reason it doesn’t feel like just another superhero movie is its story follows the template of a James Bond movie rather than a superhero movie. There is even a memorable action scene set in a posh casino followed by a car chase. The rest of the action sequences are not as jarring or bombastic as those from The Avengersmovies. You can follow what is happening and where and who it is happening to; you can actually be engaged in the action. Moreover, there’s reason for the action. Killmonger’s sincere but villainous motivations and T’Challa’s dilemma in being both a protector and a leader add substance to superhero spectacle

When you see Black Panther, you are treated to an all star cast who brings their game that's better than A. Chadwick Boseman kills it at T'Challa, and is able to bring the emotional moments of the movie to the forefront. Michael B. Jordan should be praised for not only playing the second/third best Marvel villain, but for playing a complex character that brings the alagory of racism and hatred to life. I would say things about the rest of the cast, but you should honestly take my word for it as trying to say anything else would spoil the movie for you. The music from both Kendrick Lamar and composer Ludwig, fill the atmosphere and embrace African culture to the fullest extent possible, provide a soundtrack that is onpar with Guardians. The cinematography is amazing as a whole, but that is what you should expect from cinematographer Rachel Morrison. Everything in Wakanda feels authentic and embraces the vibrant culture of African people and does so in a way that is aethestically pleasing, and true to who the people are. It's unique and yet familiar. Plus, they don't hammer in a message so hard like how you'd expect a film like this to be. It takes its time with telling a story in a way that the message can unfold naturally to the viewer, rather than Whiplashing like J.K. Simmons. And all this is made possible thanks to writer/director Ryan Coogler, who has given the best stand alone Marvel movie since Guardians. Without him, this movie would not have worked the way it did. I love Black Panther, and I personally don't think you have to be black or white to love it too. Because if a movie can just stick with you after you left, and you'd be willing to watch it, then watch it again, then that's all that really matters. I love this movie and I hope you will too. Just that it wasn't worth all the hype. The only thing it has to be a unique MCU film would be that it had was the majority of people from black community as its cast members. I am not criticizing that, but that's NOT a legit reason to hype it up so much. .
.
Good : It was whatever the first Thor movie couldn't be. In other words, it was "Thor" (2011) on Wakanda and better. It has some fantasy elements regarding the "Black Panther formula" and at the same time, it is quite of a sci fi too, and on the sideline it's also a crime film. These themes hold together very cohesively and make the movie a solid piece of art, on the whole. For the first time in an MCU movie, a villain was good. Killmonger is probably my second favorite MCU villain till date, the first one being Thanos. That character was well written to say the least. We knew where he was coming from, his motives, what he is up to and why. He is the best part of this movie. Many of the heist and crime film vibes it had was very interesting in the scenario they set up for this movie. The character interactions and the dynamic between various characters were good. Some funny scenes and dialogues land properly (while some don't, it's an MCU movie, after all). While watching this film, you won't want to skip any part of it, even though, in the end, you might be saying, "is that it?! Dafuq?!!" But most importantly, it gives you a really good introduction to Black Panther. We can get behind this hero for good. The character arc they give to him is excellent. .
.
Mixed : A lot of it feels like parts of Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy. The "sci fi" part feels quite like the stuff going on between Batman and Fox. The establishment of the character of Killmonger was (in a subtext) similar to how we got introduced to The Joker in "The Dark Knight" or to Bane in "The Dark Knight Rises". Also, some scenes are quite similar to interrogation scenes of "The Dark Knight". I am not saying that it was a ripoff of Nolan's films. It might be the same in the source material they adapted, I don't know. But noticing those themes being dealt in a similar way, makes it kind of a mixed bag. The movie, also, apparently "kills" off a character, which doesn't feel so compelling because they were to be back in future films (which had already been announced or were seen in the trailer of Infinity War). Not saying that the way they killed off the character was bad. If we didn't know about him being back in Infinity War, it would've made a solid impact. But, we know about him being back. So, it wasn't much interesting. .
.
Bad : Many fights and scenes in the film are super clichéd. Not only that you can predict what will happen, you can even predict what kind of a dialogue will close that scene, and what will be the immediate consequence for the character who gave that piece of dialogue. The third act of the movie was just plain generic third act of a superhero movie with a lot of clichés and dumbed down "Captain America: Civil War" conditions with some of kind of "Lord of the Rings" vibe. .
.
Conclusion : "Black Panther", for me, was some kind of a mixed bag. It was surely overhyped, but wasn't so bad of an overhyped movie. On the whole, a solid entertainer. Not something like Infinity War or Iron Man or Avengers or Civil War that will be talked for a long time. .

Why is every critic review for this movie possitive like 40-60 I could understand opinions differ but there's loads of 100s which is the perfect score so people think this mediocre marvel flick (I love marvel a lot) with it's PS2 cutscene CGI poor attempts at humanising the villain who wants to ignite a race war If the villain was a white guy he'd be a Nazi you can't humanize a nazi basically this movie is hugely overrated and the most annoying thing is that nobody can see how mediocre this movie is which meant when I watched it I was expecting the best movie ever made. Anyway the plot is fine I suppose. The only character I liked throughout the film was T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman) he was likable for the most part. My problem is that there was no scene that really stuck with me like all the other films in the MCU and for that it was pretty boring. The acting is brilliant however. They made the scenes a lot more believable. I did like the idea of Wakanda being technologically superior surrounded by third world poverty and the moral dilemmas it could bring up (However unrealistic) It's a lot like the comics in some ways but despite everything good, the clear political agendas really take away from the experience. This film would have been AMAZING if only people like the film for the contents of the characters and not the race of the characters. Expand

Black Panther is a good but not great superhero film. Certainly it's not superb, as the SJW critics may have led you to believe.

It's amazing to view the fictional Wakanda country in film, a technologically advanced african state isolated from the outside world and posing as a 3rd world country. Black Panther's tech and gadgets rival those of Iron Man and Batman. And certainly it's refreshing to view elements of african culture.

Unfortunately Black Panther is a film more concerned about not sparking any kind of controversy and appealing to SJWs than telling a captivating story. Marvel movies have usually been average in the storyline department (except for a few great movies like Captain America: The Winter Soldier) but Black Panther suffers in this respect. It's not just the SJW undertone which I dislike. It's a story a bit too similar to Disney's The Lion King, and everything's predictable. The street car chase in South Korea is fantastic but battles are underwhelming, and the final one is a big mess. The Black Panther vs Killmonger fight is really bad. Other than Black Panther's throne there was not really anything bigger at stake, despite the efforts of the writers to add a sense of danger because Wakandan weaponry may spread out of the fictional country's borders.

Also the Black Panther movie is not really connected to the wider MCU, aside from the inclusion of Agent Ross from Civil War and the return of Ulysses Klaw from Avengers: Age of Ultron.

I like Chadwick Boseman posing as Black Panther, but the movie was a slight disappointment for me. I hope his next solo movie will be better. Now he's set to come back in Avengers: Infinity War.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am rating it a zero to help balance out the clear biased scores. The truth is there is nothing that stands out as terribly bad. A lot of people complain about the political agenda of the movie, however it seems to be something that is relevant to the black community which makes it a very logical topic to be the driving point. That said, there were quite a few things that seemed to break immersion for me. It seemed that the primary goal was to have as much african influence as possible so they would have advanced wakandan tribes with brutal mutalations like lip discs and scaring tatoos. This was out of place too in the way that they act like all of africa has a similar culture. Africa has 1.2 billion people and if feel it odd that they want to boil it down to such a degree. That said it did a great job in making me want to see more films exploring spacific African culture.
OK now the film, The effects were not ground breaking, it was visually pleasing. Acting was not too bad for what was given, however the characters were written very flat, The villian is upset for having been left behind but that is pretty much it, they did not do well to develop the main character, He was the same guy as when he started. It suggested that he is more willing to share their technology maybe but that doesn't seem so out of character for the guy when first introduced. There was no real apotheosis.
The plot was driven by the writers not the characters. Somehow an advanced civilzation is going to let an outsider with no interest in the good of Wakanda be the king of Wakanda. it was cringe worthy. The movie is full of serious cliches to the point that You can guess what happens next with 100% certainty. There was not anything technically wrong with it, It just leaves you yawning and bored half way through the film. Not worth the money

Somehow it's being talked about as 'important', but for all its well-intended and rather limited redress of colonialism, it's really more of the same in another form. For some reason, all the actors are forced to use an exaggerated 'nowhere we know in Africa' accent, that makes it about as progressive as an episode of 'Allo 'Allo. It's a curious Western fantasy of high-technology, magic weapons, and mag-lev trains, but also of people who are ruled just as much by violence, monarchy and tradition (while maintaining an abiding love of ceremony, mask-wearing, totemic animals, dancing, patterned fabrics and riding armour plated Rhinos). Therefore it's assumptions are largely shaped by the very colonialism it apparently sets out to critique. What it probably does reveal is a confusion around attitudes to Africa at the border of US identity politics. The resulting mess is interesting to think about, but as a film is over-long and crawls to a somewhat predictable end. However, by playing the game of positing a mythical technically superior African nation, it both reshapes Africa to be like the West, while revealing that it is the only standard it thinks anything is worth measuring something by. Even the idea of Africa bringing 'aid' to America was wasted in sincerity, rather than rye satire. Again this is because it honours the foreign saviour myth it really should have done a job of demystifying. Expand

It feels weird when battles go on and there's no blood on sight. The thing that makes this movie great it's the story, it came in a great time and the moment it had to. When you leave the theaters you feel for Killmonger, you get him the most, and other political messages hidden here and there between the dialogue are great too. For a characterI have to agree with the critics - Black Panther is definitely the best MCU movie so far. Truly well written characters, great camaraderie between them, and very heavy underlying themes, unlike your typical comic book movie. For a character that I was never familiar with via comics, Black Panther is an instant fan favourite, and that's not an easy task. It's so much easier to make Spider-Man or the Hulk or Wolverine likeable. To an extent, Iron Man had a similar task on it's hand as he wasn't really an A lister for casual, non comic fans and RDJ just blew our minds. Chadwick Boseman has that same effect minus the eccentricity. He's more Captain America than Iron Man clearly, principles, valor and all that. As a movie, I've never seen anything like it in the MCU, if not for the introduction of Black Panther in the hero heavy Civil War, it might be a rather difficult task reaching casual audiences - that was a masterstroke marketing wise. The connection to MCU (as well as being a run up to Infinity War) is a big advantage and will bring in the green, but not to take away from the fact that it's just a very good standalone movie and an excellent origin story. I wish the villain had more screen time but Michael B Jordan does well with the little time he has and isn't a typical one dimensional villain. I just wish that conflict between them was fleshed out more. Is this my #1 Marvel movie? That title still belongs to Iron Man, but while Iron Man was fun, Black Panther is just stellar. Since it's comic book movies you can see why my # 1 doesn't have to be the best one. Bottom line is, I can't wait to see Black Panther in Infinity War strutting it out with the rest of the Avengers. But what was most impressive cinematically was the magnificent art direction: the imaginary locations are spectacular, the sci fi elements are cool and the costumes are fantastic. The surprise was how much drama is involved. Sure, there are the requisite action scenes, but there's a lot of talk about pride, moral responsibility and other lofty subjects. The cast is loaded with top notch actors, who turn in serious, dedicated performances. Ryan Coogler is one of the most promising directors today and he's brought his socially conscious vision to bear, while still managing to entertain. Black Panther picks up right after the events of Captain America: Civil War following Chadwick Boseman (T’Challa/Black Panther) and the rise of a new king and the struggles that come from the responsibilities of it. Performance wise everyone did a flawless job, between the accents of the Wakanda people to the beautiful, Blade Runner like city designed to the artistic fight scenes and tightly written dialogue creates a movie worth watching. Every character, even Stan Lee with his famous cameo, just come off with such power and leaves the viewers with such impact and lots to think about from each line of dialogue delivered. Both Boseman and Jordan make the ranks of fans and critics favorite characters in the MCU to date along side with the array of supporting actors (Freeman, Gurira, Nyong’o, Whitaker, Kaluuya, and Serkis). Action wise this movie is visually stunning. With Coogler transferring his use of beautiful follow cams from Creed and using the same Cinematographers from Creed and Kingsman: The Secret Service and Kingsman: The Golden Circle to choreograph the fights and film them so flawlessly and beautifully makes Black Panther one of the best action movies of the year by far. Special Effects look beautiful with the Kinetic Suits and the Vibranium infused weapons used by the Wakanda warriors and Boseman. Each site of the city gets more and more beautiful with its subtle yet so appealing to the eyes. By far my favorite was the kinetic energy used when the Black Panther suit was charged up. Ryan Coogler gave it his all with Black Panther and didn’t hold back a single bit with is beautifully written film that was directed so perfectly. I was a fan when I saw his work with Jordan on Fruitvale Station back in 2014 and loved his work even more with yet again Jordan in Creed and how Coogler has cemented himself in with the MCU as being one of the best directors working to date. Just look at any of the positive reviews & see all the downvotes on every single one of them. Any other film does that have that issue, and that's because it was decided well before this movie came out by certain people that it was "racist towards white people," or "propaganda," just because of it being a primarily black cast.

In 2018, people literally cannot see past race. This movie was destined to be called "racist" regardless of what it did. The MCU has been around for 10 years, yet because one movie has a primarily all black cast it's "leftist propaganda?" Riiiighhttt...I'm not a leftists in any way, nor am I black (I'm white), but it was clear in the comments of every article leading up to this movie that people just can't be civil about stuff like this. They see faults in EVERYTHING, thinking it's all some elaborate conspiracy to remove white people from movies (or other idiotic similar ideas). As if the MCU isn't FILLED with white people, yet ONE movie that stars a black guy is to much? The character has been around for decades people... How is every other character ok, but having a movie staring a black one "pandering?" It's not. It's just your inability to move out of the political realm & think everything is some "war" on your stupid ideology. It's a friggin' movie...get a life & stop being triggered by anything that's not all-white. The best way to know they didn't watch the movie? Complaining about "oh the evil white people!" Yeah...that wasn't a theme whatsoever. The main villain is black, and he happens to be one of the BEST villains in the MCU. Including the non-movie side of the MCU, Loki, Kingpin, Kilgrave, Vulture, Ego (somewhat) & now Killmonger are some of the best baddies Marvel has put out there. The movie is set in Africa, and in a fictional country called Wakanda. Customs & traditions are based on African tribal culture mixed in with highly advanced technology hidden away from the world. Are there certain themes black people can relate with more-so than white people? Sure, that's to be expected. And what's wrong with that? There are endless movies with themes I relate with already and others couldn't, so why should I care if not 100% of the movie connects with me on some deep level? The overall message of doing the right thing, reaching out to help others, and uniting in the face of hardship & struggle instead of isolating yourself and only looking out for you alone is great.

And that's the exact thing we were taught in church, in school growing up and by our parents, yet suddenly now that we're adults we're supposed to be only concerned with ourselves? When others are hurt, hungry, helpless, bullied, sick, poor, etc. it's better to come together in times of crisis, lift each other up, and extend a helping hand...not cut yourself off & isolate yourself from your neighbors & hope the crisis doesn't affect you. Historically it ALWAYS backfires & makes things worse, and eventually you will suffer in some way from it. That's what this movies primary message is. That's what most every religious prophet in the judeo-christian religion teaches as well. And as I said, historically that's what we've learned too...World War 2 was only 75 years ago, and look what happened when everyone didn't want to intervene & stop the Nazi's rising to power. We tried to ignore them, appease them, and excuse the obvious red flags & warning signs. And people kept thinking "as long as it's not us, we shouldn't get involved!" Didn't work out so well...

And no, this movie didn't propose interfering in everyone else's lives. It literally said if you're able to HELP (key word) your neighbors & fellow man, you should do so if possible. The dialogue, the acting, the action, the pacing & the storytelling was all top notch for a comicbook movie. There were flaws like the CGI not being very good in several parts, or the short screen time of a certain character, but there weren't any movie-breaking issues. The movie wasn't as formulaic as many MCU movies, but it didn't break new ground in many areas either. Overall, it was a very well-told story that did justice to a great comic book character. I'd give it an 8.5 if possible, but if I had to pick between an 8 or a 9, I'd lean 9 since there weren't any glaring issues anywhere in the movie. Definitely recommend for REAL comic book fans & MCU fans.

If you're thin skinned & easily inflamed by trying to approach everything as if it were speaking to you on a political level, just stay home. You'll surely find something to get triggered about, just as anyone who looks hard enough can twist everything into whatever they want to think.

I certainly applaud Marvel for putting a black director in the helm of one of its franchises and for making a movie comprised almost in its entirety of black actors/actresses, but that should not obscure the fact that this a mediocre movie. Every aspect of this movie shows loving attention to detail from the sumptuous costuming to the high tech gadgetry. It works well as a stand-alone film because I have not seen the majority of the MCU films. Princess Shuri is Q to T'Challa's James Bond, and she has created a variety of super-spy gadgets to thrill and entertain. I highly recommend this film to you.

Good things: Black Panther gave the black children a superhero to relate to which is very sweet. That's it.
Bad things: The script felt very rushed, The acting was **** except for Michael B. Jordan, The humour was cringe worthy and even if this movie tried to send a message it was too obvious and right in your face. Every time Michael was on the screen he started shouting "I am gonna free every black person alive and I am gonna destroy the white people". Every goddamn time! I would have liked the movie much more if they kept the message more subtle. And the pacing of this movie was.......... it can't be described in words. It has some of the worst CGI I have ever seen. Every fight scene looks like a mario video game. I don't even know what to write. This movie was so bad that I was at the edge of my seat because I almost fell asleep.

Yes, it's well made with great visuals and good characters, but I feel that's it's still a little bit too run-of-the-mill with it's story telling. The plot and story feel incredibly cliche and predictable and I was a little bit disappointed with the lack of storytelling risks. Yes, the movie takes some risks not usually seen in Hollywood like having a superhero movie take place in Africa and exploring/incorporating traditionally african culture, but the unique aesthetics are effectively the only major risks. The villain was probably the best part. Much more flushed out and understandable than most other Marvel villains. Also, I LOVED that T'Challa wasn't your typical wise-cracking snobbish MCU hero like Iron man, Thor, StarLord, and Dr. Strange who constantly make quips and comedic one-liners. I like comedy, but at times it can get too annoying in MCU films. Made T'Challa much more tolerable and likeable.

So yes, this movie is entertaining and it does more things right than it does wrong, but it's just a bit too generic. 7/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's a really well made movie with some deep political messages- but the reason it is not a 10 is due to its tone. Part of me wanted it to stick to being a kids movie and another part wanted it to get darker and more gruesome. A lot of kids will not get the scenes that are inverted iconic moments from Roots or the references about "the sun never setting on the Wakandan Empire." Also, there a couple of CGI moments that don't look the best. But it is certainly one of the best marvel films that I've seen due to its acting, writing, the nuances, and how it is unapologetically political. I'm really glad this movie has all the success it has, while some of the critics heralding it as the second coming could check themselves a bit, one should not let that diminish the fact it is a great movie. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is one of my favorite Marvel and superhero movies and one of my favorite movies of all time. The writing and screenplay were stupendous. The acting from Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Letitia Wright, Danai Gurira, Lupita Nyong'o, Winston Duke, Martin Freeman, and Andy Serkis was outstanding. The costumes were phenomenal especially Chadwick Boseman's, Angela Bassett's, Letitia Wright's, Michael B. Jordan's, and Danai Gurria's. The sets were excellent especially Wakanda. The soundtrack was terrific especially the songs All the Stars and Pray for Me. The visual effects were great but sometimes they weren't to real looking. This is a A+ movie. Expand

The characters in the film are full of depth and their relationships with each other are developed and written really well. Each character is given time to shine in the film with heartfelt motivation and genuine depth. The script in the film is great as well, creating some excellent dialogues and remarkable scenes that are emotionally powerful. The production design is also great, with brilliant use of colour and impressive mix of tradition and technology in the settings of the film. Combining the amazing production design and the fantastic costume design, a highly realistic nation and culture of the fictional country Wakanda is created. The cinematography, acting and music are solid in the film. The film also successfully explores political, social and cultural themes with just the appropriate emphasis within the fantastic narrative. The action sequences are competent, but they are flawed with occasional over editing, and some CGI that look unfinished. Fortunately the action scenes contain great emotional weight from the characters. Another flaw of the film is its pacing, which makes the film feel like it’s split into two, and the pacing of the second half of the film sometimes feel too quick. The pacing issue also caused some cliched moments. Ultimately, Black Panther contains obvious but minor flaws, nevertheless the film is an immensely satisfying film that is certainly one of the best in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. 8.6/10 Expand

"Black Panther" is so ridiculously overrated by fans and critics alike it's incredible, although I can see why. The film makes such a great statement in the celebration of African culture, that it's not hard to see why critics like it so much. However this does not a good movie make, and the fact that a large number of fans would consider those who dislike the movie "racists" is absolutely outstanding to me. The first half of the movie is so unessacary and boring, that the majority of it could have been completely removed from the film without making any difference to the main plot whatsoever. In fact, the movie technically starts about halfway into the running time, as that's when the actual story kicks in. The special effects are very average and under-par, which was rather dissapointing for me considering this is a Disney movie, who recently released quite possibly one of the most stunningly beautiful movies ever- Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The green screen is painstakingly obvious at points that it made me forget what was actually going on, and it actually ruins one of the most emotional moments of the movie for me. A lot of the acting is rather poor, and even the main cast (except one who I'll mention later) are surprisingly average. However, the movie really picks up speed towards the second half of the movie, there are a lot less unessacary jokes and the story actually becomes rather interesting. I want to watch the movie again just to see the second half, as that is the most exciting part of the production. The finale is thrilling and although the choreography wasn't great it was still amazing to watch. The second half is also when the best part of the movie comes into play- Michael B.Jordan. He puts in a stellar performance, and I was so much more interested in his character than I was with almost everyone else. He is the most developed marvel villain in a long time. Other than that there weren't very many positives, and although this movie is a fantastic celebration of culture it has many issues unknown to blinded fans and critics. Expand

The plot is lost in this movie, as hollywood continues to think that we are looking to them for political opinions. We have no interest in their opinions, and wanted a movie about the Marvel universe. What we recieved was sloppy acting, contradictory plot points, and a good sountrack. This movie would be without controversy and just as important to the point that they wanted, had they not forgotten that this was entertainment first.

In short, this is the first Marvel movie that I do not think that I will watch twice, which is a shame, being how great the actor introduced him in Captain America.

T'Challa is the hero I've been hoping to see for a long time in these movies. He's strong, brave, complex without being dark or a jerk. The supporting cast is awesome, with his sister Shuri (who almost steals the show), his ex Nakia, CIA agent Everett K. Ross, and guard Okoye make up an awesome team. They are fun to watch and each gets real stand out moments. Okoye getting my personal favorite action moment of the whole movie. The action feels fresh and exciting. Focusing on smaller fights over grand confusing CGI spectacles. It all looks very cool. There's a car chase midway through the movie with Claw that is particularly awesome. The story feels much more adult than most superhero movies. Dealing with the complexities of how to be part of a world that may not like you but you have to do your best to make better anyway. The corruption of power and how the powerful manipulate the fears of others to gain more power. It also stands alone. You will not need to see the past 10 years worth of Marvel movies to understand anything (aside from one post credit thing). Okay, let's address it. There is a lot of alt-right hate out there against this movie. It's a movie about black people who are strong and independent. It shines a light on the damage caused by white colonialism. So, of course, they will hate it, say insane untrue things to try and stop people from liking it. And this is how they will be as long as they get their marching orders from Infowars, fox news, and Trump. Ignore them, decide for yourself. Remeber it's only a movie, so breathe and calm down. If superhero movies aren't your thing, this might not change your mind but if you've liked them but wanted something more mature then this is it! Expand

A few times the acting was absolutely terrible. I sat there and thought oh this is supposed to be a dramatic moment but the acting, mainly in part of the female actors were just flat.
Martin Freemans American accent attempt was rubbish!!!!
They rehashed scenes from Civil War but didn't do them as well as the CGI was terrible.
Was really disappointed as there was so much hype about it.
The Black Panther in Civil War was better.

Following Chadwick Boseman’s character T’Challa as he returns from the location of Civil War, we are introduced to the bustling world of Wakanda, which is undoubtably the most colorful place in the entire MCU. The immersion is incredible - a grand introduction via a flyover of the entire city, accompanied by a terrific score from Ludwig Goransson (those drums are amazing). The way Coogler goes about exploring the culture of this world is invigorating, and he devotes the entire first half to this. When it comes to the action, it is largely hit or miss. It is quite noticeable, at specific points, when a character changes from a stuntman to a CGI model, which can get quite distracting. The majority of the fights don’t provide enough of the satisfying elements of other Marvel outings, and, honestly, the direction of the action could be better (Nothing against Coogler). Also, the seemingly poignant messages expressed throughout the film’s runtime sometimes come across as hamfisted, which was kind of a set back. All in all though, Black Panther makes up for its somewhat disappointing action sequences with a charming story, incredible characters, the best Marvel score to date, and terrific performances. And, most importantly, it’s a lot of fun. Expand

Money talks, and right now the film's box office dominance is sending a powerful and culturally important message to Hollywood and beyond. Stories of all colors and stripes are waiting to be told, and cinema fans are pining for fresh takes and innovative ways to convey those tales.

However--one way or the other--box office results should never be mistaken for a barometer of a film's quality. 'Black Panther' brings the fictional nation of Wakanda to life while shining a bright light on a handful of social justice issues that desperately need to be addressed. I particularly like their bad-ass female version of the Praetorian guard. But in end, those highlights aren't enough to overcome the handful of illogical moments scattered throughout the plot, the hewing of action scenes towards a more juvenile audience, and the frequently lame dialogue in which Michael B. Jordan's character is easily the worst offender.

It is one of the best Marvel films and a fresh instalment into the cinematic universe. However, it still falls short in many aspects that the average blockbusters and Marvel properties always do... The writing is a bit better than usual, in that it has one character with purpose and a satisfying arc, and certain story elements carry more weight than usual. Still, the film falls into the usual trap of inconsistent characters, logic that the film explains but then contradicts all the time, and a predictable narrative with poor pacing, evolution and too much lazy exposition. The costumes and soundtrack were better than expected, but the visual effects are terrible considering the standard of recent films in the franchise. The direction overall was slightly more aware than average but felt bland at times with a lack of technique and intelligence. Most of the performances were competent and the score was surprisingly good. Overall, it is somewhat better filmmaking and writing than most Marvel films, but was elevated by the politics and social influence it had. Expand
