Bad. By every metric and consideration this is bad. Perhaps the worst movie in this genre since Green Lantern.

But I feel it was very by the books, generic and extremely predictable. Most of the humor in this movie was off, just a few really worked for me and the audience it seems. Since there was very few people laughing in the theater I was in, and that is rare for these MCU movies. The dialogue in general was also not that good, they should have made a smarter script with more interesting dialogue. It lacked nuance and personality in my opinion.

The movie had some enjoyable action sequences, but most of it was nothing that blew me away really. I feel the action with Black Panther in Civil War was better, more focused and clear. Personally I think Okoye had the best action scenes in the movie, and if I am not wrong, she even had her own theme. Her action scenes was a high point in the movie for me.

And I have to say I don't get the praise for Killmonger. For a villain he had reasonable motives for once, but I felt his character lacked any real depth too. I really hate it when they have to give us a big list of exposition to give us an idea of how strong he is, instead of showing how strong he is throughout the movie. I really think they should not have had two villains in this movie and just focused on Killmonger. And character Ulysses Klaue was wasted in this movie. I don't know much of the comics for Black Panther, but I thought he was like his main nemesis.

That being said, I still enjoyed the movie. While the dialogue was so so, the actors did a good job. I loved the world building and most of the visuals in this movie was breathtaking. Besides some iffy CGI here and there. The music was excellent and some scenes in this movie was a perfect blend of scenery and music. There was a few moments where everything truly clicked and it was cinema perfection.

Overall I think the movie is a flawed diamond as it has moments of perfection, and for the most part it is truly gorgeous to look at. But it has some rough edges that really could use polish.

So I am not sure where I would rank this movie on the MCU scale. I think it lands somewhere in the middle as it is not among my favorites, not even close. But I am excited for the future of Black Panther as I do want more of Wakanda. I am excited for his part in Avengers Infinity War.

While not a white-majority superhero movie, Black Panther does not exactly exceed any other Avengers film, but simply a combination of repetitive actions that we've all seen before.

I thought way to much time was spent on the set up, and the set up was boring. So many actors in this movie that I usually like, but not in this movie. Chadwick Boseman was great in 42 and I own that movie on Blu-ray, Dania Girira is great in TWD and Angela Bassett is great in 911 and AHS. Also I didn't think that Martin Freeman felt right in his part, it seemed a little forced. So many Marvel movies are better than this, like Iron Man "2008," X Men "2000," X2 "2003," Deadpool, Doctor Strange, The Avengers "2012", Guardians of the Galaxy "2014" Captain America Winter Soldier and Civil War. All of these movies listed are better, in my opinion, but Black Panther is better than Thor "The Dark World" and X Men "the Last Stand" but it is nothing special and Definitely Not Worth A Score of 88, AT ALL... It's been years since I've been able to actually tell that an actor was on a set with a green screen behind them pretending to be somewhere else, especially in a big budget film. No real depth of characters. Rushed, hollow and very predictable plot. Decent soundtrack, but not enough to make up for the other flaws. All in all a poor representation of what could have been done with this set of characters. I came away feeling 'let down', especially given all the glowing reviews I'd heard. Not worth seeing, and doesn't need to be seen to advance any Marvel Universe plot lines. Expand

The movie has an AMAZING cast, which they totally send to waste with bad dialogue and quick deaths. It starts in an amazing way, fooling you in believing that you will see a quality movie; but it ends up being a Marvel movie, and one on the low level. It has a weak story and a villain that ends up not living up to the expectations. The actions scenes are okay, but not much; they use too much CGI on the fighting scenes and it leaves you disappointed on the quality of it. Everyone hope to see a strong statement on racism or even a good superhero introduction, but it shows us again that Disney does not knows what to do with its movies. Expand

Objectively, its a bad superhero movie, compared to others (even the bad ones). I loved Danai Gurira, shes a really bad ass actor and that role fit her very well. But the rest?
The logical ties in the universe make no sense at all, if you take all the other movies together. The acting could have been better (especially that of the main actor). The bad guys are all jokes or even worse versions of young Annakin Skywalkers in black. The story itself makes not much sense either, nor does the depiction or imagination of Wakanda. Its like an insecure 10 year old wrote it.
It honestly boggles my mind how this movie gets such high reviews. Just because its mainly black actors? I dont get it. If I was black I would see it as an insult, because the movie is that bad and cant compete with "white movies". It felt tedious to get through it.
Spawn, Blade or Hancock deserved that much hype much more than this movie, if you just look at the "black".
Seriously, normally I can see a pattern in seemingly senseless high ratings (or even low for that matter), but this time... If I would have to guess, the reasons for these high ratings are actual racism and virtue signalling only. But that cant be, can it?

Like my review's first few sentences, they just seem like they could be worded in a more coherent fashion. Fight scenes were definitely fun to watch although i did not enjoy some of the scenes filmed at night because the camera work was too shaky and it was hard to tell exactly what was taking place on the screen. Third act had some great camera work and great fight scenes however. The story was quite linear; you knew the entire time where story would lead, what the "twist" would be and how it would be resolved. All in all, it was another decent entry in MCU. One thing i always complained about when it comes to MCU movies is their color contrast or rather lack of it. This movie did have moment of vibrant colors mixed into its cinematography which made it more fun and appealing to watch. Comedy was present as it always is in MCU but this movie was able to go a good job keeping the tone serious since it was warranted considering the plot. There were a couple of points in the movie where it felt a bit slow and felt dragged on especially in the second act but picked up near the end which made up for it. It doesn't necessarily have to be seen in theaters but def is worth a watch if you are action movie genre fan and especially if you are a superhero/mcu fan. Expand

First, the bad news
After watching this movie twice one thing is really bugging me, the fight scenes. What a missed opportunity. Civil war set BP up as a martial arts bad ass with a fighting presence similar to Bruce Lee. The BP movie kinda strips that cool factor away with poorly shot fight scenes. In a way, it's like TDK cus the fight scenes were **** in that but the story was superb.

Now for the good news
Killmonger, killmonger, **** Loved Killmonger! Not only was he sympathetic, he was right about EVERYTHING. If BP and Kilmonger could work together somehow it would have been beautiful. 2 panthers! 1 like MLK and the other like Huey P Newton both complimenting and balancing each other. I liked all the characters and personalities in this film. I liked the different tribes and their colors and outfit. The art direction and costume designs were off the **** CHAIN! if they don't win an Oscar for that it will be a blatant snub. The Dora Milaje were amazing and hot and I never thought Michone from walking dead was hot, but "damn." Umbaku was fun and I liked his sense of honor. Everyone did a great job even Martin Freeman even tho he didn't really need to be there. Back to Killmonger. He delivers a line in this movie that made me tear up cus it was true and it was tragic and that's his whole character. I just can't say enuff good things about Micheal B Jordan in this movie. I loved the relationships between the characters they all felt real especially between BP and his sister Shuri. I'll be re-watching this film for the rest of my life.

...and now for the ugly news
Too much CG. Practical effects should have been utilized more and the cam shakes too much.

...and the weird
I got thru a review without spoiling anything :) also the stingers were not good or interesting

If you haven't already, go see this. If you've seen it already, go see it again. Marvel never lets me down and continues to surprise me.

...one more thing, "Killmonger" that is all.

As much as Chadwick Boseman is to be admired for his previous stellar efforts, he's in over his head here, coming across as one of the blandest action-adventure figures in some time. Of course, it probably doesn't help that he and the rest of the cast are working with a script full of cookie cutter predictability, an insufficient back story for the protagonist's alter ego, underwhelming special effects and excessive earnestness that borders on implausibility. For a movie that's been drawing raves, I expected a lot more than what it actually delivers. Expand

You won't see anything new in this movie that Marvel hasn't already done. Acting is poor, CGI is the worst in MCU. You could predict what will happen in the end after seeing the first 15 minutes of it.
Black Panther was much more epic in Civil War.

Following T'Chaka's death his son T'Challa returns to the advanced, but secretive, African nation of Wakanda to assume the throne. Unfortunately this transition is not going to be a peaceful one.

The Black Panther is a good film but, after seeing so many extremely positive reviews, I couldn’t help but come away a little disappointed. The significant use of African culture and traditions does make a pleasant change from the over familiar New York setting, perhaps doing more than anything else to set it apart from other Marvel movies. There is also no shortage of interesting characters, including one of the most interesting ‘bad guys’ in Micheal B Jordan’s Erik. Personally however I found the pacing to be a little uneven at times and there was more than one occasion where a felt a little disinterested in proceedings. Overall the action scenes were also somewhat lacking compared to the best the Marvel movies have offered in the past and it was actually a little difficult to see what was going on during some of the fights with so many quick camera cuts. A good movie but not as entertaining as the best Marvel has offered over the past decade or so.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Unfortunately I found this movie sub par in pretty much every respect. The story line was slow and dragged out. The action was really hit and miss, with laughable power differences between characters (an armoured rhino was considered the hidden "power" weapon of the movie). Additionaly they killed of the two most interesting characters of the black panther Universe in this film "Killemonger" and "Klaw", easily the two most charismatic and well acted roles in this movie. The storyline was oddly racist towards people not of African descent, I know I know its a ficitonal African country, but still, its an odd message to have as the major plot point of the film.

The only major posoitive that i found i had for this film were the visual effects, the "sand/Dust?" hologram tech was really well done.

Apart from this you can easily give this film a miss, as it contibutes next to nothing to the MCU, part from taking away two of its best characters. (Literaly nothing happens, the end of the film leaves the story in the same palce as the start of it)

A nearly all black cast superhero movie to push us yet further down that contentious road to equality. In addition a propensity of female names also headlining the behind the scenes tech credits, and it would appear that many will be signalling their approval and be very happy with the result. Add to this the appropriate accomplishments in Costume Design, Cinematography and (despite the odd wobble) Visual Effects and a positive euphoria must be sweeping all before it. Critically acclaimed, a box office behemoth and already garnering talk as the first superhero movie to be nominated for Best Picture at next year's Oscars. It almost seems too good to be true. Oh, did I not mention the script! How silly of me to omit all that mumbo jumbo of a storyline that seems to have nearly everyone in raptures. Forget 'Ladybird' and 'Call Me By Your Name' this seems to be the appreciated literature of today. In most movies, there is a point (or three) when I look at my clock, hoping things will end soon. There was no such boredom-point in Black Panther. The visuals were gorgeous, the action exciting, and the world intriguing.
When I say "the visuals were gorgeous," I mean jaw-dropping. It was a huge part of why the movie worked so well for me. The plot and characters were fine, but the look was what made me invest emotionally. Colorful, exuberant, textured, and sleek.
The only thing I felt was a real problem with the movie was the main villain. They tried so hard to make him hip and relatable that it frequently felt like he didn't belong in the movie. That may have been intentional, playing up the outsider vibe, but it broke the immersion for me. Also? There were times it felt like he was pandering, sort of a "We cool, and I'm'a spout lines that let you know we deserve awards." He almost brought my rating down to an eight. (But the movie did give me war-rhinos, and those are worth almost a whole point by themselves.)
Warning: the fight scenes, battle, and car chase and such are kickass, but you may grow bored if you aren't also interested in seeing another culture. Parts of the Thor movies take place in Asgard, but it's only a backdrop rather than something that matters... in contrast, Wakanda feels very present and relevant within Black Panther. Somehow, this movie made me feel like a participant in the ceremony and affairs of a mythical/sci-fi African kingdom. Weird, but awesome.

One on hand, the critics are raving for this movie, saying it is a "game-changer" and things of the sort, but on the other hand, we have regular people saying the movie is "decent". I, like the majority of those that have seen this film, would have to agree that it is simply...decent. I cannot disagree more with the critics when they say that this movie is "game-changing" and "revolutionary", because if you get past the nice visual effects, this film is rather dull, not to mention cliché.

Not even half an hour into this film, I found myself wanting it to end, or at least begin living up to the hype, but the unfortunate truth is that something of the sort never came around. The action was really the only thing keeping this movie afloat, that and the visual effects which seem to be the best part of this production. At times I was simply in awe of how beautiful some of the scenery was, only for that admiration to be decimated by your classic superhero-movie-moment, or, perhaps even worse, a very cheesy joke. In my opinion, the dialogue is so bad, it rivals the Star Wars prequels, and that is an accusation I would never take lightly.

So, if you're like me and have been a huge fan of the MCU, definitely see this film because you won't feel like you wasted time on this film. Keep in mind, however, no matter what the critics say, there is nothing that this film does that has not been done in nearly every single superhero film to date. Not revolutionary, simply entertaining.

I was honestly bored for the 1st half of the movie and stopped watching it, as it was almost too painful to watch. The only thing redeeming was Anthony Serkis. I watched the 2nd half a day later and it got more interesting. I am happy that some people love it. I would rank it above Fantastic Four and well below Dead Pool. As for the critics. What a joke. A score of 88? Seriously? This movie is plagued by all the things you rip other movies apart for. So you all are a bunch of hypocrites. Are you giving affirmative action bonus points to justify your score? I am all for Black Super Hero movies, but they should be good. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Typical reactionary BS from Marvel, thinly disguised as somehow progressive. Let's get this straight--in a film called Black Panther, our hero teams with a white CIA agent to kill the one radical/revolutionary figure (and the film's only African-American character, who's from Oakland no less--home of the Black Panthers). He defeats the latter's plans for militant resistance to the current oppressive racial system and instead basically opens a string of charter schools in Oakland. Uh huh. Expand

Fights are lame, way behind Winter Soldier and Civil War, it's very sentimental and naive. I liked Wakanda, costumes and cast, but the story is just... boring, a lot of talk but nothing going on generally.

But, even seeing this a week after it came out, I loved BP. The world-building was terrific and the cinematography absolutely beautiful. Unlike some recent superhero movies, I found the entire cast of characters compelling (Serkis was far better as Klaue (Klaw) in this than in his brief cameo in Age of Ultron). The action scenes were underplayed, if anything, but effective. There were a few bits of clunky dialog, but it really didn't matter. This was the freshest Marvel movie for me since the first Avengers. Expand

I honestly think it's one of the better Marvel films and is, for the most part, visually astounding. The writing is pretty standard for a Marvel film, it's formulaic but it gets the job done well enough to entertain the intended audience. This film wasn't so much created to be a statement or offer a different outlook on life or the world around us. This film isn't Logan, which took the concepts of death and depression and used them in various aspects of the narrative. Nor is it as fun and offensive as Deadpool. It's meant to make money while entertaining a broad audience, which it does. Some of the visuals in this film were taken straight out of the comics and look almost watercolor at times, which I thought was really interesting. There are many other aspects of the visuals that I thought were honestly astounding while there were a few (more specifically the rhinos) that looked like they were right out of an old PS3 video game.

The soundtrack is comprised of a mixture of rap, hip-hop, and traditional African music. I honestly really liked this soundtrack and it was honestly great to see something original rather than having them use licensed music.

Will I be buying this for myself when it comes out? Probably not, but I wouldn't be disappointed if I received it as a gift or a birthday present.

This movie has been getting a lot of hype, as well as a lot of hate, and going in, I was hesitant. Getting to excited about movies like this can lead to disappointment, which can really suck. This movie is not disappointing, this movie is exceptional. Ryan Coogler brings his all to this film, and it shows. Just like Creed, his love for long take fights shows through an incredible casino tracking shot. The best thing about this movie is the characters. We all have been hearing about how amazing Michael B. Jorden is in the movie, and I can say that they are right, damn right. He is by far the best MCU villain. Maybe if ten years from now, I was a child binge watching super-hero films, I might take it at face value. But, as an adult now, I can't let my finances support these political edge movies are requiring I.e. Wonderwoman - Feminist Movement, The Danish Girl - Trans movement.

For the record, I'm cool with women. I'm cool with blacks. I'm cool with trans LGBTQ+++. I just don't want to buy a ticket to prove I'm cool with people. Black Panther has become the ultimate blockbuster, almost reaching the Avengers Age of Ultron as the 3rd most successful comic book film of all time. Is it worth the hype? Yes and no. Coogler on one hand created a passionate super hero film with a great perspective on the African continent. On the other hand, it is a 'Marvel film' and its basic plot is derivative of another Marvel flick about 'kingdom and princes'( which title I will not spoil here). Its success rest though on Marvel / Disney's uncanny marketing ability. Who knows that the African American community in the US 'hungers' for a film representative of them and bet a $200 million budget for it? Well Disney did and they got a $1.3 billion plus movie. Their dominance at this point on the cinemagoing experience is so 'severe' that I found that the only 'worthy' tentpole films to watch first day on the cinema are released by them. Expand

I went into this movie with high expectations due it's critical acclaim...i was severely let down and i think it hurt my viewing of the movie.

I really don't understand what the critics were watching compared to what i watched. I can see this movie got only positive reviews? nothing neutral or negative? critics afraid to give the users their true review? even masterpieces like the Godfather and Lord of the rings have their naysayers!

This movie isn't as groundbreaking as the critics would have you believe. I don't understand the CGI...at times it looks pretty good then other times it looks like they ran out of budget? not consistent and really drags down the film as panther himself is mostly CGI (during action scenes).

I had Star wars phantom menace vibes during the Wakanda council meeting!

Overall the movie isn't bad but it isn't great either. The one great thing about this movie is killmonger. Michael B. Jordan is amazing bar his not so fantastic four reboot.

User scores should have more weight than critics as it seems not all critics are genuine (please see Ghostbusters 2016, Star Wars: The Last jedi 2017). That can be said about user scores as well BUT as you can see from the numbers, there are maybe a few dozen critics, so each score is weighted more and when you look at the users, those trying to sabotage or praise to high are often offset by the majority (1800+ user reviews for black panther).

The "What are those" joke sucks ass, the acting is acceptable, the action is acceptable but somewhat bland at points, Kilgrave is definitely better than most Marvel villains in movies (except for Vulture, Loki, and **** Hydra.) This movie certainly meanders at points, especially in the beginning, but at least it sets up scenes later in the second half. Daniel Kaluyaa is fine, his character is so ignorant it hurts, but his acting's fine. None of the characters really act like they're related to each other...

So why did I give this a 7... I don't know, it just doesn't suck ass if you don't think about it too much. Although this is definitely within the bottom half in terms of quality for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it's not the Incredible Hulk, it's not Thor 2, and it's certainly more memorable than Age of Ultron... personally, I do think the movie presents some interesting ideas at certain points in the plot, especially towards the end when I thought it was about to become something quite unique in the superhero genre... then rhinos show up and the same stupid **** happens yet again. (By the way, I actually give this more like a 6.5, it's just that I have to round up since it's a 6.5 and not a 6.49)

Is this movie flawed? Yes. Is this movie better than anything DC has done within the last four years? Also yes... Wonder Woman is just as overrated as this movie, I hate to break it to you, but try rewatching that action scene in the alley, and you'll realize how poorly coordinated that scene in Wonder Woman actually is (or just watch RalphtheMovieMaker's review on it, he'll sum it up in a way that my stupid mind can't explain.)

Lastly, CGI can f*** off thank you. The fight scenes of this movie were absolute trash. Is it too hard to have a real hand to hand combat sequence without lame CGI? It looks bad and it looks fake AF. 3/10 for me and a shame because after Infinity War, my hype for Marvel came back and I decided to start watching the movies I missed. Visually pleasing really well directed and shot action scenes, and amazing futuristic vibe to it. The actors did a decent job on their roles. Also the plot was pretty local and did not met the standards of today's marvel universe's huge roles but it did fill in one chapter which was needed for the future movie. The music in action scenes and tension ones was really great, also the plot had a taste of traditional African traditions which was breath of fresh air in the MCU. The humor was above average and it got a few really hilarious moments as well, due to it's humor. But the real show steal-er was the plot's simplicity yet interesting. This movie is never better than 'The Dark Knight' or 'Logan'. I really liked the villain, and the characters, but I was curious if they really needed to fight for death. I don't think fighting each other would be the best decision and I couldn't follow the movie very well. If I wrote this movie after watching the movie, I would probably give 8/10, but I'm very disappointed after buying Black Panther file. Expand

Black Panther is a great movie. Is it the best Marvel? No. But I do believe it's in the top 5. Erick Killmongerer is the best villain in the MCU so far. That might change with thanos though. 70/100

I don't understand what all the hype and super praises are about. It's an average Marvel movie and, quite honestly, to say this is the best marvel movie ever sounds like way too much.

The movie is ok and here's why I think so: 1 - this plot has been exploited time and again;

2 - the villain is uninteresting and his character development (if we can call it that) feels very rushed;

3 - the movie tries to be too much for its own good: a super hero movie, a political dilema, social justice and equality. I mean, nothing wrong with all those, but the mix just didn't blend well here. Sure the message is amazing, the feminine empowerement is fantastic and the cast overall is very strong. Too bad it's wrapped in a slow-paced, mostly predictable movie.

4 - the action scenes - the few ones as the movie focuses more in story telling and slow-paced drama - are lackluster. It's a super hero movie and as such I believe people expect to see action and cool fighting/action/adventure scenes. Black Panther's moments in Civil War are much more exciting than most of this movie. Also, he looks much more powerful, interesting and on purpose there than here.

The mid and post credit scenes are awesome. Marvel never lets us down in those.

6 sounds really fair here: 4 for the social message it conveys + 2 as a movie that doesn't fit it's category and that doesn't honor the universe it comes from.

It is a very mediocre film, awkard dialogue full with anti-white narratives, totally racist towards white people, i hated it, and i think the people that scored it high are bigots and politically-correct left-wing social justice warriors.

This might be invalid criticism and more subjective but I personally find this not and infinitely rewatchable Marvel movie. CGI is very overused, yet looks very fake.
Ironically Black panther doesn't commit anything heroic in the movie. He endangered civilians in car chasing scene. He attacked terrorists in the beginning of the movie - only because his girlfriend was there. Killmonger's motivation is stupid, he is easily one of the worst villains in MCU. Secondary villain was better than Killmonger. Wakanda's tradition is very dumb. Just random criminal comes to country, kills the king and takes the seat. And the wakandans just...accepted it. There is no any loyalty. The dudes from Border tribe are the worst traitors.

This one is no different as far as the plot goes and is predictable. I am giving it high marks for the look of the movie, however. Pretty people, pretty costumes and make-up, pretty places, good special effects. Fight scenes are just OK with the standard fast editing so you can't tell what's going on, and of course we have the ubiquitous boring car chase that I wish movies would stop doing. There is one flawed scene towards the beginning of the movie where the space ship flies into a bunch of trees and exposes the futuristic city. The city is completely lifeless! No cars, trains, people, other flying machines, etc. Weird. Did they run out of money for the effects? Overall a visual feast but not much else. Expand

A culturally relevant- and long overdo- blockbuster film featuring a superhero based on a highly underrepresented minority; bravo for that. Trouble is, Black Panther just isn’t a good movie.

I’m sure some of my disappointment stems from the fact that I haven’t had the crushing experience of consuming media my entire life wherein the protagonist doesn’t resemble me, then finally seeing a mega-budget Hollywood spectacle featuring a superhero who does (I’m white). I can intellectualize it- and think it must be a revelation- but I’m not able to truly feel the same weight of the film that an African-American might.

Unable to fully absorb the film’s weight, I’m left to judge the movie solely on its merits as entertainment. I’m sure the movie loses something when those two things are divorced from one another, but for better or worse, it’s the only perspective I’ve got.

Black Panther’s acting was hit or miss, the action sequences were shot in a way that made them nearly impossible to follow (even a massive suspension of disbelief isn’t enough to get over the total obliteration of physics), and while the storyline was fairly straightforward, it’s presented in a superficial and confusing way with zero emotional impact. Also, there’s a special material that’s central to the plot and it’s beyond ridiculous. The stuff can very literally just do and be anything and everything the script calls for, it’s a bridge way, way, way too far. On the plus side, the setting was unique and impressive and the women warriors were portrayed as fierce, highly intelligent and principled. And, of course, Andy Serkis was his usual scene stealing self.

It’s a Marvel movie- and a subpar one at that- only elevated by its cultural significance (which, however, shouldn’t be the least bit minimized).
