The movie, led by Margot Robbie, falls significantly short in character and plot development, focusing instead on a series of forced humour and moral grandstanding. This supposed self-aware take on the iconic doll's narrative appears more smug than insightful. The large ensemble of characters ends up feeling frustratingly interchangeable, diluting any attempt to present unique personalities.

While the art direction and visual design stand out, they are largely overshadowed by the film's inability to fully capitalise on the quirky and interesting concept of 'Barbie Land'. Instead, the movie chooses to spend more time in real-world settings that unfortunately offer little contrast or comedic value.

At its core, "Barbie" feels like a film made for the social media age - visually appealing, yet ultimately empty in content and purpose. Its primary appeal, it would seem, lies more in the experience of the pre-release hype and the resulting social media buzz than the movie itself. A missed opportunity indeed.

From the marketing I expected the movie to be a fun, 'fast-food' style movie with sub-par plot exploring the world of barbie with dance routines, songs and lame jokes.

What I got was a man-hating movie. It bashes and blames men. It mocks men and masculinity. It would've been acceptable if at the end there is a redemption arc. Eg. showing that both genders have their own unique skills and that by working side by side the world can be a better place. NOPE. The Kens started as useless beings with no power, say, or achievements. They exist for barbies only whenever it is convenient for her. At the end they are back where they started.

The marketing team should win the oscar this year for their deceiving adverts. They managed to lure kids and young teens to 2 hours of brainwashing.

The effects were very pastiche, at least it was unique visually for a while. The acting was good in general. I give it 33%. It was a movie that try to elevate women by stepping over men, rather then transmit a positive message for both sex. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The barbie movie is honestly so fricking weird;
The trailer made itself look like it was going to be focused on barbie and the barbie world, and from word of mouth, I thought it would be the barbie version of the LEGO movie, but the ACTUAL movie couldn't be further from the truth; The movie wants to be about barbie and celebrate barbie, with a whole song and speal about how barbie can do anything and can be anything, but at the same time tells in detail how barbie is bad because it's made by the patrairchicals systems and she damages women's rights. The story's message feels conflcited with itself to the pint where the only good character is, ironically, ken (who is made into a "bad guy" because he finds out about patriarchy). It's so **** weird, and that's the only way I can describe it TBH

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Deceiptive marketing campaign. The trailer is selling us the idea of a stereotypical barbie and ken falling in love with each other, but the film is exactly the opposite of that. The movie is aiming at brainwashing little girls with feminist propaganda. Barbie find happiness by rejecting love, motherhood and by fighting the so-called patriarchy and having a labiaplasty. I knew going into this film that it was going to try to push a message. I believe this is where the film untimately fails. A good film can convey its message through creative story telling. Barbie instead decides to have the characters in the film directly tell you multiple times. Its almost like the writer of the film does not think people are intelligent enough to comprehend it otherwise. I award this film 3 points though because the sets and costumes are extremely well designed. In addition Ryan Gosling does an excellent job portraying Ken even with a terrible script. The music is also excellent. Expand

If you are a woke progressive or someone who won't take these themes the wrong way, you can enjoy this film. The cinematography is great and it's well cast.

But the plot is also divisive and can be more offensive than the recent Bud Light controversy if you don't like woke themes.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Beer. Horses. Cowboys. Trucks. The Godfather. Sports. Boxing. Fur coats. These are what make men who they are. #Patriarchy. This movie **** sucked. I know I'm not the target audience, but it'd be nice to feel welcome ya know. The message wasn't even subtle in the slightest. They might as well have just stared directly into the camera and say "Men bad, women good". And the world itself is broken af. So literally anyone could've just come into Barbie land THAT easily? Why was Will Ferrell in this movie? He could've been replaced with anybody and it wouldn't have made a difference. Is this movie a comedy? Didn't laugh a single time. Not even a chuckle. The only reason I don't give this like half a star is cause I didn't hate the ending. But I don't get the gynecologist line at the end. Is it a **** joke to make her feel more human or did she grow genitals cause she's been in the human world so long? Either way. This movie wasn't for me in literally any way. Awful movie, I can't wait for the hype to die down and people forget it exists. Expand

Yes it’s PG-13 but the marketing campaign for this mf was geared toward “EVERYONE” as they said. I’m not surprised. Of course these godless Hollywood elites would try to dismantle our society by deceitfully hiding and pushing their misandrist immoral/anti-American ideology propaganda through children’s films. Barbie has been hijacked but it happened years ago during the 2nd wave of feminism. Just ignore it, it's just another Ghostbusters 2016 and will be forgotten by September. Radical feminists desperately want people to get triggered by it, so imo best solution is just ignoring it. After all it's not well made movie anyway, so it simply doesn't matter. Of course it will affect Margot Robbie's and possibly other actors career. Pretty sure they lost a lot of fans, just by being part of this movie. But at the end of the day, it was their choice to be in this movie, so who cares. Literally same thing happened with Ghostbusters cast, they hardly got any roles after that movie. Ultimately, it's their choice and if they want to lose fans, good for them. Expand

The sets are well done.
Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling acting is outstanding.
The story depicts the distopia of a Feminist society.
1) In Barbieland men and women do not have genital. Women are indifferent to men. Men pander to women. Women control society. (Very Unnatural and clearly a Feminist dream).
2) In the real world men who do have genital are aggressively misogynistic.
3) Capitalism (that is freedom, liberty) is a metaphor for evil.
4) In Kendom, with men and women happy in traditional roles, the women are depicted as brainwashed.
5) Girls and women are discouraged from being mothers.
6) A real woman has a vagina, which is odd since real women for Feminists can have penises or vaginas.
The movie promotes unnatural social engineering in competition with the Soviet Union and National Socialism.
A very Postmodern Frankfurt School production.
Disgusting and dangerous.

I ended up having a really deep and excellent conversation with my wife about it afterwards. She's a feminist and made this really great point. She said, "This film is so keen to talk about women's oppression in the real world that it forgets that it's created a fictional oppressed people in the Barbie world". You can't make an oppressed group and then have them become the villains simply because it suites another part of your story".

Doing so made the film seem very mean spirited and, honestly, quite supremacist. It's treatment of patriarchy is also extremely simplistic which adds to that unpleasant affect. There's no way in hell I'd take my kids to see this. I think it's kinda harmful.

After that it devolved into a platform, and even that didn't work as the creators propably intended. Jokes rarely landed after the first 45min, never heard a theater so silent after a punchline of a joke.

Also the message in this film is that Barbie is a villain. That's not the Barbie I grew up with. Barbie would not oppress or "put anyone on their right place", or leave anyone to suffer just because her own goal isn't yet met. And we're meant to cheer at the end for that? I call BS.

That's not feminism, and that IS NOT BARBIE!

Edit afternote:
Apparently criticizing this movie makes one an incel. Or a man for that matter - which btw I'm not.
When they can't refute your criticism with proper arguments or facts, and simply resort to name-calling and outright dismissing your opinions based on your assumed demographic... that's very telling.

This year's or maybe all time? most controversial film is here. It is highest degree of modern third wave feminist fantasy, in other words, it has pretty much nothing to do with actual reality.

The way men are treated in this movie, is absolutely horrible and that's the only realistic part in this movie. Because men are treated horribly in real world as well. I have seen so many reviewers point out how this movie shows how badly women were treated and are treated right now. Yeah, i guess that's why men's suicide rate has been sky-high past 10 years. But i guess if you are rich or semi rich woman who lives in gate-protected LA neighborhoods, no wonder you don't know ANYTHING about real world.

This movie had most misleading marketing of all time. Yes, i mean it. Out of all movies ever made, this one takes the prize. They got so many young people hyped to watch fun-happy-go-lucky summer movie. Instead they got another feminist lecture and of course feminists in their 30s and 40s LOVE it.

It's sad reality that thanks to this marketing, it will have very strong opening weekend, easily over 100 million. One can just hope that after first weekend it drops off and most importantly, will be just forgotten.

It represented a fun flashback opportunity to expand our imaginations and remember the joy and laughter Barbie brought to us so many years ago. HOWEVER, I found it peculiar that the folks filing out of the nearby auditorium, donned in pink, were looking kind of sad or dejected. Whereas, those of us filing into the next theater to see the same movie were full of excitement and anticipation. Now I know the answer from a firsthand experience. It was underwhelming for the content, context and whimsy anticipated by my party of 3 and it left us disappointed to say the least. The best things about the movie were the set and special effects to create a Barbie like world. That was well done. The acting was also good enough (although I felt sorry for the actors having to bring their talent to such a poorly thought out storyline. The story was sub-par. A true missed opportunity to have audiences leave the theater full of joy and laughter, speaking of their experience; with memories and imaginations sparked again by Barbie. Instead, we left on a low note with all guests filing out in silence. Too bad! This movie made me want to warn as many people as I possible because there is already enough disappointment out in the world. Why pay $10+ to experience more disappointment in Barbie’s world. Yikes!! Don’t fall for all the hype. Save your money and time! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A movie based on the stereotypical ideology that men and women are on war since the dawn of time. You know, Marx said it's a class struggle, Hitler said, it's a race struggle, and Mattel says it's a sex struggle. So, contrary to the factual laws of evolution, Mattel suggests that there is no benefit on cooperation between the XY and XX members of our species. Therefore, if you want liberation you have to go to war. A fictitious one, of course. Because if you take a look outside, you can see men working 24/7 with the sole purpose to oppress women, right? So, the next time that the statistics show that 95% of the deads in workplaces are men, or men dying sooner than their retirement age, you can blame the patriarchy. Yes, because a society controlled by men that don't favor men is as twisted as a Mattel's universe. Surely, Mattel's marketing effort with this movie has a "lesson": Pretend to be a hero by playing to be a victim. Because it's much better to be perceived as good person than being a good person, at least in the real world. Expand

I expected the famous dolls Barbie and Ken to leave "Barbieland" and end up in the real world. There we would see comedy, where they try to adapt to the real world and see the differences between the worlds.
But that was not what we got to see. Or yes, we got to see the differences (very politically left). We were taught that in the real world men has the power, being masculine is something bad and you also heard the girl from the real world describe that "men hate women here". (In the real world)
As I understand it, the movie Barbie is aimed at children as it is PG-13 and it is about the toy Barbie that 5 year olds play with. Nevertheless, there is dirty humor and jokes with references about different people that only a 40-year-old could understand. In short, I think they miss their target audience with the humor in the film itself.
And there were various moments in the film where they did things without meaning to achieve a particular plot.
I think the positive thing about the film is how Barbieland itself looked like. Pink and happy.
Otherwise, the film is a huge disappointment for me.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I walked into this movie expecting to have a great cinematic experience. The leading cast was perfect and the propaganda and time spent to promote the movie was done perfectly. Done so perfectly that I couldn’t wait to see the film, but now I see why they spent so much time promoting it. The film itself is very boring. The comedy didn’t really hit. There was no memorable parts in the film. The acting was subpar even from actors such as Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie. All it was was promoting feminist ideals to the public and to put down men in society. Barbie is supposed to be a comedy, a film that will leave me crying from laughter in my seat. All it left me was disappointed that I watched this rather than Oppenheimer.

I give it a 2 because the “I’m Just Ken” song is amazing, let’s just be honest. Definitely gonna get best original song.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What a letdown and disappointment this movie turned out to be. I had made a promise to watch it with my wife, approaching it with an open mind and no prior knowledge of reviews or the plot. I wanted a fresh perspective, but unfortunately, my experience was disheartening, and I feel compelled to share it to help others avoid a similar fate.
The Barbie Movie attempts to challenge traditional values and women's roles in society, viewing our present world through the lens of oppressors and the oppressed. It starts with scenes of girls playing with old-fashioned dolls, mimicking motherly duties, and feeling down. Suddenly, a giant 20-foot Margot Robbie Barbie emerges, symbolizing a new era of feminism and expressive individualism. The film's central theme revolves around women seeking positions of power and influence, challenging corrupt and inept men.
The movie presents an idealistic world where all Barbies possess power and influence, while men are portrayed as mere admirers and worshippers of Barbies. This Barbie-centric world is set in contrast to our "current world" controlled by the "patriarchy." The intention of Barbie World is to promote a balance of power and influence, encouraging women to pursue careers like doctors, lawyers, and even president. While the message is empowering and uplifting, it simultaneously ridicules men, portraying them as baffling and incompetent buffoons, while undermining the significance of motherhood.Throughout the film, they awkwardly mention multiple times that the pregnant Barbie is a discontinued model, seemingly going against feminist ideals. In the end, Barbie decides to transcend her mere conceptual existence and takes action to become a human to influence the power structure in favor of women. The final scene shows Barbie at a gynecologist's appointment, where true freedom is depicted as the freedom to do with her body as she wishes. In summary, the movie conveys "the message" in a woke fashion, promoting the modern self while deconstructing the image of men and motherhood.

And sorry 'Mericans, you are good at Marketing, not Art. And this turd of a movie on the most plastic of all marketing is ironically a perfect example.
What is left if not beauty? A social commentary? A feminist manifesto?
It could be considered a pamphlet or a fable if the writing weren't so atrocious. How apt to end this pathetic American attempt at cinematic philosophizing with the great tautology: "Ken is me! Ken is me!" or the profound "I'm going to see my gynecologist". It's a litany of predictable "you go girl" clichés. Some people talk about mansplaining? What about womenagging? The few good funny moments were delivered by the Ken character. What is truly concerning is how many American critics value this drivel.

After seeing this I understand why Mattel was curating the publicity so much. This is deceptive marketing plan and simple.
This is not a good movie; it is mean spirited, down putting, and reductive. Which is sad, as the toy was always up
After seeing this I understand why Mattel was curating the publicity so much. This is deceptive marketing plan and simple.
This is not a good movie; it is mean spirited, down putting, and reductive. Which is sad, as the toy was always up lifting and inclusive.

The character they want you to see as the villain; if you flipped the gender, the character would be held up by some people as a held back hero. And the message at the end... yeah not a great message, and a hero that thinks this solution is good isnt a hero just another villain; an eye for an eye and the whole world goes blind.

I have never asked for my money back from a movie but I did this time. And the look in the eyes of the kid behind the counter I think I wont be the only one. Bc of the marketing it will do good this weekend but drop like lead brick.

With Ghostbusters 2016 and now this, anything with Kate Mckinnon is now a automatic no see movie for me.

It's a 2/10, this is a broken movie with incomprehensible pacing, music, scenes, that have literally nothing to do with the Barbie Franchise.

It's a 2/10, this is a broken movie with incomprehensible pacing, music, scenes, that have literally nothing to do with the Barbie Franchise.

This movie bombards you with scenes and dialogue that will make you confused that you'll want to keep watching. There is a way to make a Barbie movie and this is not it.

This movie takes scenes from good movies and thinks that it works with the plot it is trying to convey.

Did I mention the patriarchy?

AND SOME HOW, this movie makes over 1Billion dollars.

I have now lost faith in the human race when it comes to supporting content that is useful, joyful and inspirational.

The only thing that works in this movie is Ken because he actually has a plot that had enough to explain his actions. That's my review, literal WB was advertising their own content in the background which is insulting to the consumer. I will no longer Support WB from this point onwards. Congratulations WB, you played yourself.

I changed this to a 1/10, because of the woman complaining about complaining. This is not what you should be teaching children specifically young girls.

A must-not-see. There is only one reason Robbie, Gosling and Gerwig are involved in this. It starts with c and ends with ash

Don't watch this it reels you in with the hope of nostalgic fun but then spends the rest of the time trying to forcefeed political themes.
