Soon she discovers a hidden door in the basement where she makes a horrifying discovery and becomes trapped. I didn't have many expectations for this one, what would this being the kind of film that I don't normally get too excited for, several positive reviews it received didn't quite sell me on this one, but I decided to check it out nevertheless. And while I will say that it does have a genuinely frightening atmosphere to it throughout most of the film, along with some tense moments (particularly in the first half), and the performances from Campbell, Skarsgard, and even Justin Long (who doesn't show up till about halfway through) are all sufficient enough, in the end, it's still mostly felt like just another creepy basement/tunnel thriller to me. There was nothing too extraordinary to set it apart from other similarly-themed films within the subgenre. Even falling back on an old trick or two (such as shrinking the aspect ratio for a brief period flashback sequence 3/4 of the way through the film) didn't do much to help make things feel any fresher or unique, instead just making the film's editing and pacing feel disjointed. The drawn-out final act also left me feeling a little underwhelmed when all was said and done. So overall, though it starts out tense, eerie and atmospheric, and offers some great scared as hell performances from its three main stars, it all quickly starts to feel more and more generic and all over the place by the second half and especially the last quarter or so of the film. The film started out pretty strong and held my interest for the first third with great performances and tense directing. After that it slowly fell apart and became more generic the longer it went. Kudos for the nice cinematography.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie upset me a lot, and it’s not because of the “woke” allegations people are claiming it to be. It’s because the movie falls flat with a great premise and unique shots of cinematography but all around worthless plot. From the get go this movie presents extremely good tension and suspense, however it subverts your expectations well, unnerving yourself due to your own expectations. It presents interesting premise which is the main antagonist being not some hugely scary monster from outer space or demonic possession but a creation of inbreeding and rape, solidifying at least some form of tangibility with our real world. However that’s where my praises fall flat, as to the characters that aren’t directly in peril or at least when they aren’t have no real reason to be there at all. For starters, our main character presents herself to be a pretty successful, likable and all around inoffensive marry sue, with a partial plot line of her applying to a position for a film that is set within the location our characters are at. And that’s it, that’s all we get from her, there’s no self growth, there’s no expansion on her plot there’s nothing for her except being a person to be chased by said monster. Our second protagonist is a playboy tv star that is nothing more than the typical frat douche, he has no real personality other than that. With his plot line that’s presented is that he raped a woman and is being held accountable. Due to his expenses being too much for him to handle he ends up in his own rental property (the location of this film and main area where the horror takes place) he ends up believing there’s squatters in his house and proceeds to go look for them and then ends up in the situation with the first main character (don’t want to go too far as to spoil the entire movie as there is some playability and a reason to sit down and pay attention) and then he serves no purpose as to be another person being chased.

Over all, with how beautiful the movies horror plays itself out, how the tension is created and the cinematography for these shots are played out, it’s a strong contender to be considered a modern classic, but the plot brings it down so far due to its lack of consistency, the plot that is presented by each character and their turmoils and even some extra elements for the backstory of the monster itself, really make it fall short of being a classic horror movie, which is a shame truly due to it just presenting so much and doing nothing with it

You got a woman pulling up to an air B&B that she rented over the internet and another guy is staying there. So immediate questions start going through your mind is he a lunatic or was the house double booked. I was generously curious how this was going to play out. It actually did a good job building up tension and had some good suspense.

Then the second half kicks in and the movie takes a 90 degree turn and goes off a cliff into being completely stupid. now we are into some crazy lady living under the house that for some reason is as strong as a Kodiak bear and can rip people apart. my brain started to melt on how stupid this was all getting. I don't think I even made it to the end and just turned it off because it was giving me a headache.

Instead, it is somewhat unsympathetic. The setting and people in the midst of poverty are, for the most part, seen as things to be frightened of. Is this what we need right now when the US is facing a poverty crisis? In the end, I felt like the film just vilified poverty, rather than starting a deeper discussion about why poverty happens in the first place. Wasted potential. Expand

Zach Cregger surprisingly found creative ways to turn a simple story into the real nightmare with beauty of cinematography and decorate the excitment with an unusual storytelling. Unfortunately, the last segment was a bit ruined by rush and comedic transition. But apart from that segment, this film is simply a good modern horror film of our generation.

It's absolutly not everyone's cup of tea due to its unlikable storytelling, so give it a try, it might be a new taste of your horror.

Well, that happens again and again in this truly dumb movie. Georgina Campbell plays a woman in Detroit for a job interview, when she finds out that her AirB&B property is double booked (not the first movie with that scenario). That only begins a series of idiot moves on her part and the other 2 leads (Bill Skarsgård & Justin Long). Every encounter, whether with other normal humans or the titular characters, doesn't make sense. To make matters worse, there's never one moment of tension. This film is truly a head-scratcher: How did anyone greenlight such and obviously stupid enterprise? Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is poor. I love horror movies, but Barbarian uses the tireddd cliche where the monster is a naked old woman. I was with this movie 100% until that unveiling. The run down neighborhood in Detroit and the mystery of the house were so interesting, the characters had a good thing going, great momentum and tension were built, I love being scared. I’m not scared of a naked lady. I don’t know WHY directors and writers think they’re scary; they’re not. Naked elderly people as monsters are just awkward and embarrassing for the entire production. Maybe producers think their naked bodies are shocking or something? Maybe they think it pushes the envelope? Just give me a break, PLEASE. Avoid this cumbersome movie. Expand

If one grew up appreciating the authors of the past millennium, those who with the code of horror cinema spoke to us loud and clear about important things (existential, anthropic and social phenomenological analysis), he cannot and does not want to degrade himself by accepting films that instead stop at lowest level of social justice warriors, at the political correctness for civil rights, at the most boorish and irrelevant jumpscares race or, as in this case, at a very pale denunciation of the Reagan era (Reagan?!).

It had such a good chance of being a proper horror from the build up in the beginning between characters, but swiftly flooded away into horror tropes that have no place in anything attempting to break ground into new frontiers. All this movie did was take the safe route of dark roomed “who’s theres?” Coupled with the safety of day. Back and forth back and forth. The good news is you get to see the famed horror movie nipple, but the bad news is it’s attached to a C-grade hills have eyes character who is shoving it in Justin longs mouth. As if to add cinematic irony to the seasoned horror movie snob, it wraps up with Justin long getting his eyes crushed in and head split in half which is what I felt like I went through giving this movie every chance to turn around until I, too, died of head splitting boredom and unsatisfactory time wasting. The best part about this movie was when the credits start rolling and you can check your ID and remember you had nothing to do with the creating of this film. Expand

With horror becoming one of the more common genres for artists to really flex their voices within, Cregger's joined in and proved he's yet another one to be reckoned with. This is a biting, hilarious and frightening film on an atmospheric, thematic and subtextual level. You have to love a movie that's willing to take as many swings as this one does. And as horror movies go, it begins on a dark and stormy night. But there's a line early on that informs the rest of the movie. When a young woman finds out that the Airbnb she rented has been double booked, occupied by a young man, and reluctantly stays, she is asked would you have done the same if the roles (genders) were reversed. That question lies beneath the surface in her interactions with the occupant, the police and others. To say more would spoil the film. I did find it ironic that the last name of the lead actress shares the same last name of a particular actor who has Detroit roots and had to battle evil. Just sayin. Expand

Although it didn't quiteIf you arrive at a strange house and Bill Skarsgård opens the door just run the other way and keep on running. It really has been a great year for horror movies, and Barbarian has certainly received a lot of hype. Although it didn't quite live up to expectations if you're looking to be scared then Barbarian will do the job.

Tess (Georgina Campbell) arrives late at night in the lashing rain to her Airbnb only to find the place is already being rented to someone else. Handsome stranger Keith (Bill Skarsgård) agrees to let Tess stay as it's late in a dodgy neighbourhood and because he's such a gent. Tess continues to ignore the parade of red flags and spends the night in the Airbnb and sure wouldn't you know it, the place ain't quite what it seems.

Here's a horror movie that keeps you on your toes. There's a lot going on here but despite a very promising first act, it does lose its way only to descend into another generic horror movie ending. Tess bless her but she fell into so many of the horror movie tropes I lost count. If you're the type to internally scream every time the main character does something stupid well then you are going to be doing that for a good portion of Barbarian. You may have to restrain yourself from shouting at poor Tess to "run woman run."

Barbarian is a film that lives up to its title with the men portrayed in this ranging from borderline creepy to absolutely monstrous. It definitely had the right idea to try something new and a lot of it works, I can't go into too much detail as there's already lots of spoilers online. It's dark and twisted but doesn't reveal everything all at once, it tunnels deeper and deeper into more disturbing themes and images and by the third act you're guaranteed to be well and truly grossed out by that point. You'll also get your money's worth because it will scare you without being packed full of cheap jump scares. It's genuinely frightening particularly everything going on in the first act.

It's not the most horrific scary movie I've seen this year, that is well and truly going to Men, there's images in that movie that I'll never be able to unsee. Yet Barbarian is still an original horror that has done amazingly well at the box office. It's important to have more original scary movies like this, Smile, and The Black Phone and less of tired out horror franchises, yes I'm looking at you Michael Myers. Okay sure Barbarian didn't quite live up to my personal expectations but a lot of horror fans out there love it. The only way you'll know for sure is to see it for yourself, highly recommended for all the horror fans.

Absolutely brilliant horror. I cannot express how much I loved watching this. I was actually terrified and on the edge of my seat. I can't stop thinking about it. Ba-ba.

Legit one of the best movies I have ever seen. VERY IMPORTANT that you watch this 100% blind without knowing anything for the optimal experience. You'll understand while watching :)

Over rated but enjoyable horror flick has a pretty good atmosphere, wrapped around a 'mystery box' plot that is predictable to say the least. Worth a watch.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I think this movie is a 9/10 just for delivering the single greatest jump scare of all time. The ending is a bit lackluster, but everything leading up to it is at least pretty good. Humor is used effectively, characters are interesting, and the plot and mystery of it all end up being solid. A must see for any horror fan. Expand

I really enjoyed the movie but I think that it was far from perfect. I don't want to spoil it but I wish that they dived deeper into the origins of the house (aka previous owner). I feel like that alone could've added a lot more value to the movie.

Expand

O filme me deixou curioso, tenso e ansioso a maior parte do tempo. Quando a ameaça se revela é uma das melhores partes. A quebra que acontece no meio pode incomodar, mas a execução de quase tudo nesse filme é bom e funciona.

I don't get it. Why does every silly little horror movie have to be THE artistic revelation of the year so that you film snobs can (openly) enjoy it? Just accept that you CAN enjoy arthouse cinema AND trashy horror films as well, like I do.

I love the time transitions. It felt like watching a movie within a movie. There is only one thing left on my mind. Who is renting the house?

There is no sex in the movie, but there is nudity. But not conspicuous nudity.

I definitely recommend the movie. I'm sure this movie would be very enjoyable to watch in the cinema.

Went into it completely blind and recommended all my friends do the same. Three acts. First act was grounded, well-acted, and filled with a "something's not right" feeling... then it takes a sudden (and unexpected even with the "something's not right" feeling) turn and we start act two which was genuinely hilarious... then act 3 is absolutely bonkers fun. I started appreciating horror movies early in high school and have always said that the best horror movies typically have scares AND laughs. This movie succeeds in that regard.

Justin Long is the scream king. Long live the king!

If you want to watch this movie or recommend it to someone just go watch it without reading or watching anything related to it, you will enjoy it much more just like i did.

I've seen reviews here trashing the movie but in my opinion most of them are taking this movie too seriously, its a horror movie its natural to have things over the top and maybe exaggerate a little bit.

Anyway, its a fun movie go watch it

Anyone who has watched Tusk will basically know what to expect from Justin Long's character. It had good pacing for most of the movie, even during the mid movie switch-up. As others have noted, the characters' intelligence does seem to fluctuate wildly, and some of the obstacles to them feel a bit contrived and unimaginative, but the horror itself is good when it works and the film does build tension well. The ending and characters did leave me wanting more, but it does give you something to mull over in a way that most feel-good algorithm-designed movies don't. I don't really take issue with the ending of the film in the same way others do, but I'm definitely annoyed by how hamfisted it was towards to end. They definitely could've done more with both the protagonist's and Justin Long's characters. It works when the clumsy writing doesn't get in the way. A little more subtle showing and less telling would've helped a lot. Expand

O filme estava me ganhando no primeiro ato, com suspense e tensão na medida certo, aquele medo do desconhecido, os diálogos tensos e pausados. Que ambientação!!
Aí vem o segundo ato, o grotesco, a apelação.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was really into it. At the beginning. Everything was suspicious and very well directed. At the end of the movie my stomache hurt. Not cause of the gore or the movie itself. It was all fine. But the plot was changed so many times or lets say everytime i tried to figure it out the movie would just have a turn, which is so unpredictable and quite genius. The movie made me feel really weird and thats what good horror is. I was quite surprised and it was very well written. But at the end my head and stomach felt like pudding. If that makes any sense. Weird movie, weird plot, weird direction but for sure entertaining twists. Some horror movie leaves a weird taste and thats unusual. And for a horror movie, i like it. Expand
