AVATAR 2 is a visual spectacle. I trully recommend to experience this trip to Pandora on the biggest IMAX 3D cinema you can get. It's like an amusement park ride.

An enthralling visual spectacle that certainly impresses, but also fails to reward the viewer for the 3 hours invested due to its weak plot.

And yes, we can argue throughout that the story wasn't supposed to be the most important element of this film, but for a sequel coming 13 years later, it gives the feeling that Cameron was polishing the technology he wanted to present, rather than focusing on making his ''epic'' truly epic.

The rating I give it responds to the ambition and the enormous talent and effort that is seen in every frame.
The level of CGI seen here makes a mockery of any other film of the last decade and by far.
It really gives the feeling that you are there experiencing it, however, that also comes with the problem that James Cameron wants you to live his world, his imagination, with nothing else in between.

The second hour could easily pass as the video that exists in the Disney World attraction and that's the key problem with this sequel, that Cameron's ego was focused on pushing as much of the technical element as possible to the exclusion of everything else.

There is a death that should be crucial to the narrative and yet I felt nothing for the character, because basically I didn't even know him.
They are details, quite a few, to tell the truth, but nothing that ruins the experience.

But I do tell you, this movie is worth seeing by all means and I must emphasize that.
Avatar: The Way of Water is an audiovisual journey that deserves to be experienced in the big screen, but keep in mind at all times what kind of show you're watching. You're not watching arthouse cinema, don't embarrass yourself by comparing them.

IMAX 3D is a must.

Simply BEAUTIFUL.
Avatar 2 explore in a deeper way the characters and set a new beginning for the war of Pandora.
Jake's sons are well developed and interesting characters, the Metkayna tribe is beautiful and their Way of Water is fascinating with outstanding creatures and beautiful philosophy.
Yes, Quaritch return and break out from the stereotype of the "bad marine", even him is developed more and that's really good.
Avatar 2 is technically a masterpiece with a story more "of transition" but crucial for the develope of characters and always enjoyable, with even comedy scenes never cringy (not marvel style, for god sake...).

Cameron you're a genius, thanks!

Many banal tropes and dialogues — it didn’t add anything new to cinema nor to the greater collection of modern and historical stories. This will be a hit for the 12-year-olds and it can be a break from the monotony of your 9-5.

Regardless of how I feel about 48 FPS, one thing I can say for sure is that they should have just stuck to one frame rate for the whole film. But the movie constantly swaps around, seemingly at random. Different shots in the same scene will jarring my change frame rate, with no rhyme or reason, and it’s super distracting every time. The characters will just be walking and talking, and then a single shot will suddenly be in 48, and then it goes back to normal. In the same scene.

That aside, I don’t like the 48 fps at all. It really highlighted how everything in this film is just computer generated. Of course it’s going to look computer generated to some degree, the whole movie is CGI essentially, but in 48 fps it’s more apparent than ever. It looks like a really advanced looking video game engine tech demo a lot of the time, instead of a movie. I wish I could comment more on the quality of the movie itself— lots of scenes and shots are gorgeous, especially the underwater ones as you’d expect, but feeling like I was watching a game cutscene took me out of it so much. Pretty disappointing.

Now I’m sure everyone is wondering, was it worth the thirteen year wait? Not exactly but honestly there aren’t a lot of movies worth waiting thirteen years for a sequel.

Set thirteen years after Avatar, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) lives with his family in the forests of Pandora. Despite scaring away the sky people many years ago they’re now back again to wreck havoc on Pandora and exploit it’s natural resources. Jake and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) seek help from the Na’vi race to protect their home and family.

Avatar: The Way of Water feels like a collection of scenes from many of Cameron’s movies. There’s strong vibes of Aliens to Titanic and bit of Jaws thrown into the mix. Sure the story may not be the most original thing you’ve ever seen but there’s no denying these are some of the best visual effects you’ll see on the big screen. Say what you want about Cameron, but he doesn’t cheap out on the VFX unlike a few other movies that have neglected this area in recent years. Every single frame is packed full of amazing effects of the world of Pandora. The bar was raised with Avatar back in 2009 and now it’s been raised yet again. Not only that but it also further highlights the films with dodgy looking visual effects. Particularly some of the comic-book movies that also came out in 2022. There really is no comparison.

Avatar: The Way of Water isn’t without its issues, story-wise it’s almost a repeat of the first movie but with more water. It’s over 3 hours long and I understand the care and love that Cameron put into this but it’s very dragged out. I couldn’t help but feel that it would have benefitted from a cinematic cut and then a director’s cut for all the diehard Avatar fans. The first hour is all set up, the second feels like a nature show, all it was missing was some David Attenborough narration. The first two hours needed to be cut down but the last hour was epic for sure, even if it was Titanic meets Aliens. The repetition is frustrating and if Cameron thought people would be too dazzled by the visuals to notice, he was wrong. Also no spoilers but there was a decision made towards the end of the film that felt like it cheated the audience. There’s obviously lots of elements in The Way of Water to set it up for further sequels, but I’m nowhere near captivated enough to want three more of these movies. Yet despite how dragged out it was I was never actually bored though I did resist the urge to look at my watch a couple of times.

Because Avatar: The Way of Water felt like a combination of Cameron’s other movies I ended up leaving the cinema feeling like I’d love to re-watch Aliens again. But I’ll never say that about Avatar: The Way of Water. As for the box office which everyone seems obsessed with right now, it will make its money back of course. It’s so clearly made for cinemas and needs to be seen on the big screen. Although there are a couple of scenes that will make you dizzy it’s still exceptional to look at and a highly immersive experience. It’s probably going to make over a billion anyway but it will be lucky to get two billion and it’s certainly not going to be the first movie to break three billion mark if my screening was anything to go by. Avatar: Way of Water is quite possibly the most expensive film ever made I couldn’t help but feel like it might have been cheaper to make a Western, which let’s be honest that is what the Avatar movies are at their heart, Westerns.

A film centered around family with a very heavy message about caring for the planet and the environment. Unfortunately the type of people that message is aimed at probably won’t bother seeing Avatar: The Way of Water. Recommended for fans of the Avatar franchise. Also for anyone who hasn’t seen the first movie and/or can’t remember it, you can see the sequel without getting lost. So if you were planning on using that as an excuse to avoid being dragged to Avatar 2 this Christmas sorry that ain’t gonna cut it.

There is no plot, only one gear, and the old avatar first concept is used this time with water. Compared to this segment, the first part's speed was incredibly fast. Several times in between the movie, I slept off. It's been too long. According to James Cameron, despite the fact that we are still in 2009, the story and visual effects in movies have changed significantly over the past 13 years. The vfx were the only thing the movie had going for it. The crowd is only drawn in by the movie's buzz. I had hoped for more from James. I'm hoping the next instalment will have a good movie premise and be a shorter film. Super dull and sluggish with the same idea I don't suggest it. both time and money are saved. Expand

The acting is difficult to judge since you got CGI for a face. All the performances looked fines to me. The movies becomes very long around the end, because it's one action sequence after another, you get very little pauses. The action are really good however. They just put too much of them in successions. The music was fair. Sounds effects are incredible, just like for the first. I give the movie 75%. Great movie but too long with problems of balance.

Yes, the theme is fairly straightforward - one of protection and conservation of nature - but the story has evolved as this time it focuses on Jake and his role as a father and leader. It also introduces his kids and the rebellious nature of adolescents, and the consequences of such. These ideas are universal across all culture and are brilliantly displayed on the big screen. You don't need plot twists and incredibly complex characters to tell a compelling story.

Even though it's over 3 hours, there wasn't a boring moment in the film, and the pacing is appropriate. Being the second of a 5 film series, the ending is more of a pause than a conclusion but that's ok given the scope of the project.

Overall, It's an immensely enjoyable film that appeals to everyone, young and old, and is quite possibly worth multiple viewings in a cinema.

First of all, this movie is outstandingly beautiful, and there's a lot of good work put into it, a great experience to watch and have a lot of fun. But, in other ways this movie fails with repetitive situations, predictable moments, and messy scenes, especially in the beginning and the end. The development of being in the new water tribe is beautiful and pleasant to watch, where it's easy to feel the difficulties that it is to fit in the community, every character has their role in the movie and work well with each other, as well as their fights and bonds are understandable and relatable. Overall this movie works petty well and really opens Avatar's world to a new concept of magnitude and complexity, while bringing new, compelling and important characters to the drama, and also bringing beautiful scenes where we really feel connected to the movie and the universe Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As the first work was insanely good, I think that the second work, this work, had a little bad story.

It's bad that I can't empathize with family stories at all. Maybe I'll come to understand when I have a child and become a parent, but for me now, is it possible for me to be such a strong motivation for my child or family ties? I can only question.

The images were very beautiful, the 3D did not feel out of place at all, and above all, the HFR (high frame rate) images were too amazing.
Involuntarily, I took off my 3D glasses and rubbed my eyes.
"Wow! This is amazing! It moves too smoothly..."

Please watch it at an HFR compatible movie theater (IMAX, Dolby Cinema, etc.).

The effect I received for 95 percent of the film's running time was much like that of a TV department in an electronics store: lots of visual quality, lots of fish, lots of water, but no credible story to hold up the images, no characters to really empathize with except for Jake's two sons who occasionally, with their “bro", managed to squeak out some feeling in me that could break the apathy of a film with an 80s script that was caricatured and almost identical to that of the previous film. The story is didactic, explicit, always guiding you as if you were a 5-year-old child who constantly has to be told what is happening and what emotion he should feel. The problem is that if you are a bit of an adult with a handful of good films behind you, you understand that this story, once you understand it, falls apart. Good 3D, nice photography and direction, but is not enough to consider this a memorable movie or a masterpiece. From the soundtrack, I expected a few more winks. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. That movie was bad.

I felt like I was watching a discovery documentary. Beautiful scenes with no content. If it were a serious movie, those 3 hours would be summed up in 30 minutes and the rest of the movie would be what Avatar 3 will probably be.

Spoilers below:

Jake is an **** the entire movie. Everyone dying around him and he doesn't care, he just wants to stay hidden.

The humans' motivation is that Jake is the leader of the resistance. He destroys production routes, attacks strategic bases, etc. But 10 minutes into the movie, he stops with all that and GONES. Soon, humans have their routes re-established and theoretically can do whatever they want without resistance. So why waste resources going after the guy they KNOW went into hiding?

The final fight scene is ridiculous. Out of nowhere ALL the navi disappear and it's just Jake's family fighting. It has no explanation. One hour they're there, then it's as if everyone turned around and only the 5 of the family stayed there fighting.

I also thought it was lazy to invent a clone of the villain from the first film instead of creating a new villain.

And speaking of a villain, what a ridiculous way for Jake to defeat him. Navi don't breathe underwater.

The whole fight is underwater and jake takes him down with a rear naked choke? Well, but the guy was no longer breathing, what difference would the lion choke make lol

Anyway. It doesn't make sense only after 3 hours does jake decide to counterattack

The guy can’t create a decent plot to save his life. The real heroes of the movie are the actors and cgi team who worked countless hours to deliver James Cameron’s half baked version of the cats musical in the FernGully Rain forest. Cameron constantly borrows and stitches together ideas that have already been done, and done much better I might add in their originals counterparts. Cameron is becoming more and more like George Lucas…where no one is speaking up to tell him he is past his prime. Sure make an almost 3.5 hour movie about nothing. Totally the people will love being bored out of their minds. And he wants to make more of this overhyped boring, half baked, and borrowed idea of a world? Please just don’t… Expand

There’s not much else to the film – simple emotions played at high volume with very little nuance to the characters or situations. I appreciate that global audiences will see a blockbuster movie that makes such a stark political statement about our own mistreatment of underwater life, but I can’t really recommend the movie. I wish Cameron had all his technology taken away and just focussed on creating a good narrative that doesn’t overreach its grasp. Expand

The story is set 10 years after the original. The Sully family lives happily in their beautifully natural world, until the "sky people" (Earthlings) descend on Pandora to mine its resources. Meanwhile, a soldier from the last mission is after the family (in his new hybrid half-Na'vi form). This drives the family to seek refuge with their neighboring waterborne tribes. Since the first film was so visually dazzling, we're expecting more of that here. There is certainly lots of appealing imagery, but it's not as impactful. Even with the excellent motion capture, it's hard to relate to the blue creatures on an emotional level. Still, this tells a compelling story with a strong final battle and plenty of visual appeal. And, for the most part, it’s a visually stunning and modestly entertaining piece of cinema. But is it the masterpiece everyone has been anxiously waiting for? Hardly. While the film is long on style (it truly is gorgeous to look at), it comes up short on substance. The script is the main problem here, telling a tale that’s not overly engaging or insightful (certainly much less so than its more compelling predecessor) and full of story threads that either regurgitate material from the original or borrow from a variety of other sources, both narratively and visually. Then there’s the runtime, coming in at a whopping 3:13:00, far, far longer than it needs to be, especially in the overly protracted closing hour. The action sequences become a bit tiresome and gratuitous after a while, and other segments feel like a polished travelogue for the Pandora Chamber of Commerce. What’s more, there are storylines left unresolved, making this a picture that can’t fully live up to being a standalone entity (one of my moviemaking pet peeves). To its credit, though, the picture’s pacing is surprisingly tolerable for a film of this length, and it makes excellent use of its 3D technology (perhaps better than any other movie in which I’ve seen it employed in recent years). Still, for an offering that’s been 13 years in the making, I expected something a little fresher and more inventive than this. But, for those who can’t get enough of this franchise, this installment should satisfy nicely. And, if not, fans can look forward to three more sequels scheduled to be released over the next six years (though I’m not sure how many of them I’ll be seeing). Expand

Most fun I've had in the theater since the last Avatar movie. Look I loved Dune, loved Bladerunner 2049 but this is a different deal. It's at once lighter and more gut wrenching. Since everything is political these days, here's the deal... people on the right will **** about the woo woo earth Goddess religion, the "noble savage", "native people good/America/military/Corporations/white people bad" angle, and the "save the planet" stuff while people on the left will decry the patriarchal society, the testosterone filled, strong, positive male characters, the emphasis on children and family stuff. Meanwhile movie snobs will say the classic heroic plot is too cookie cutter and shallow. I say, check your politics at the door and show up for one of the most amazing action adventure stories ever brought to the screen. Gorgeous, funny, heart felt and unique. It was a wild experience as I have never seen such amazing CGI in a film. James Cameron, the director, then announced he was making 3-4 sequels to Avatar which was kind of baffling. 13 years later, we finally get a sequel. Was the sequel worth the wait?

Firstly, the visuals of this movie are somehow even more amazing than the first film. The forest of Pandora looks more stunning than it did 13 years ago; the advance in technology is very evident. The scenes in the water look gorgeous and so real that it's hard to believe it is CGI at times. One thing with the first movie was that it felt like live-action people were in a green screen room. Avatar: The Way of Water is mostly CGI with live-action blended in. We see live-action characters move in the same scene as CGI characters and interact with one another like living beings. It didn't give that green-screen feeling, which was awesome. I also love the world-building and design of the world. There are water-based Navi clans with looks and customs that are different from the forest Navi. You can see it in their skin colour and the design of their hands and tails. The sea creatures also have great designs with their own rules and how they operate. It was clear a lot of thought was put into everything. The original 2 main characters, Jake and Neytiri, return from the 1st film but they are not the main focus this time. The main characters are their kids with Sigourney Weaver returning but playing as one of those kid characters instead. I was a little worried as kid characters tend to be annoying but I think the writer did a good job of making the kids not completely annoying. Sigourney is surprisingly convincing as a young kid and I was interested to see more of her character in the future. I think James succeeds in making us care more about these new characters than he did in Avatar 1. Jake, despite not being at the forefront this time, has his character arc. He is no longer the fearless leader he was in the 1st film as he now has 4 kids to take care of. His priority is different and he struggles with that. Stephen Lang also returns as the antagonist, Colonel Miles, again despite dying in the 1st film. He was very one-dimensional in the 1st Avatar but here they do try to give him some more depth which I appreciate.

However, Neytiri is unfortunately very sideline in this sequel. She is barely relevant until the end of the movie and even then, she doesn't have any character arc. If anything, I feel like her character somehow feels worse here. One thing I struggled with in the 1st film was remembering names including that of the main characters. Unfortunately, I still have this issue in The Way of Water. This is thanks to the fact that a character's name only ever seems to be mentioned once and never again which makes it difficult to remember anyone. For example, Kate Winslet of Titanic fame is in this movie but I wouldn't be able to tell you what her character's name was for the life of me. In terms of the story, it's very simple and by the book. It is about the kids learning the customs of a clan and struggling to fit in which sounds awfully similar to the 1st film or a high school drama. The plot works fine but it is very bland and predictable. Every cliché and trope you see from a coming-of-age story is here. The movie is also really long with a run time of 192 minutes. I'm not sure the plot justified that run time as there were many moments where a lot doesn't happen and could've been cut to reduce the runtime. James Horner, the original composer of Avatar, passed away and was thus replaced by Simon Franglen. Simon does a serviceable job but the music score is just not very memorable compared to Jame's music score. The best soundtrack in The Way of Water is the ones that were reused. Overall, Avatar: The Way of Water is a proper cinematic experience. Yes, the movie's plot and characters aren't that memorable but the visuals are truly amazing. In an era where it feels like we get a lot of poorly made CGI, it is a breath of fresh air to have a movie that has beautiful-looking CGI for what feels like the entire movie! Watching in it cinema with IMAX 3D was a terrific experience and it is the best way to watch Avatar: The Way of Water. I'm thoroughly looking forward to the sequels!

The first part had a lot of flair for me in all respects. It was something completely new for me and nice to watch and that applies here as well of course. It definitely does, but it doesn't apply as much for me anymore, because the water world, while not bad, doesn't hold a candle to Pandora, which I certainly enjoyed more. I also liked more of the characters because the previous episode was mainly Jake and Neytiri and here they added the kids and they didn't really grab me, or at least not nearly as much as the previous aforementioned pair. Other than that, I enjoyed in the first one how she was Pandora at times and Jake as a person at times, which is no longer the case here. The action was cool, but again I have to mention the previous episode where in my opinion it was better. What didn't please me was the music, because unfortunately it was the same in places and that just reminded me of scenes from the first one, which I liked better. The same music is probably the worst thing about this movie for me because even though some parts were visually nice, they didn't impress me as much because of the music, which was the same. I'm constantly comparing the second movie to the first, but unfortunately I can't help it. The first one won me over, but the second one didn't. I'm not saying it was a bad movie. But unfortunately it appealed to me much, much less than its predecessor. However, it's still nice to look at visually and still offers some good action sequences. For me, a good movie to recommend and maybe even grab you if you love the underwater world and water in general. Personally though, I prefer 2009's Pandora, which charmed me and more importantly it was definitely easier to get the viewer's attention back then as it was something new and came with 3D for the first time. The second one had a harder time and wasn't as successful in my eyes as the first one. Expand

Incredible film. I caught myself smiling so many times saying to myself "God damn that's cool". Nobody makes movies like James Cameron. When she goes Beast Mode the whole audience cheered. And as many people mentioned this HAS to be seen in IMAX 3D. Expand

I enjoyed it just as much as the first one. If you hated that one, this one won’t change your mind.

James Cameron is masterful storyteller, subtly laying out all the seemingly disconnected puzzle pieces before placing them altogether. He stacks internal conflict on external conflict over and over again without it feeling contrived. As the tension builds, so does the desire for a payoff and he delivers. In particular, the reaction of one of the man angry parents.

His characters are always volitional, and if they turn passive, they take a back seat to the other characters driving the action.

All of Cameron’s storytelling prowess is on display here. Avatar 2 is not the greatest story ever told nor is the plot particularly innovative, but it is a well oiled machine built to deliver a moving and memorable outcome. I really enjoyed it and will definitely see it again.

Entertaining, but safe. Wish I wanted to rate it higher.

Saw this in 3D and can say that Cameron has again delivered on realism providing another great example of what 3D can be. That said, sometimes the spectacle of it all felt over the top and less immersive than it's predecessor. In a lot of ways the plot hit all the same notes as the 1st while adding some new elements that will surely be expanded upon in future installments. That said, I fail to see how these new elements alone are enough of a hook to keep fans returning to theaters for the large number of subsequent films planned. Only time will tell.

All in all, I was entertained, but still left wanting more.

Avatar 2 really overcame my expectations, 3+ hours long movie and it was never boring, really love what they did to the story line. The effects were awesome, now i get why it took so long to make.

The movie hits it’s stride when the setting changes to the islands. The water scenes are expertly shot and crafted. The plot could use another hour of movie time; to be honest.

The visual effects are breathtaking. That's the good news. The bad news is that the movie is 3 boring hours long and plays out like watching a bloodthirsty video game. The white man is bad as he destroys the environment, innocent animals and children. Yes children. It reminds you of cowboys killing the red men Indians but in Avatar substitute blue for red. That pretty much sums it up but why not throw in some bad whale hunters without compassion who torture and kill a mother whale with her calf alongside. All for a test tube of magic elixir so why not make whales extinct. And what would a James Cameron movie be without the Titanic sinking as he even incorporates that into his farce. I was waiting for Celine Dion to start singing the heart will go on. Expand

Pretty crap. Pretty boring. Pretty pointless. Cowboys and blue indians again, all woke and preachy for you. It's kind of disgusting watching something that is 60% CGI; creepy.

9 for the effects effort, but HFR is still horrible and is not helped by constant switching between that and normal FR. Negative points for story - the cast is let down massively by it, but I don't believe the foundations are good. Like the equivalent of lift music - sci-fi for people who don't like sci-fi. 'Look! Really tall blue human tribes and whales that talk and everything is connected and nice humans try to make it better but bad humans are selfish and want to smash everything, etc. etc. If you're between 8 and 16 you may absolutely love it though? Just watch Prey instead. Says everything Avatar tries to without even trying. Someone put Cameron out to pasture now. Cynical box office grab. Expand

Pregnant woman fighting... Yeah, giving immature girls ideas such as this, is totally not gonna end with some tragedy at some point. Hollywood is getting stupider from movie to movie.

I actually think the story is a little stronger then the first movie although it's pretty painfully obvious that James Cameron has dragged the setting to the area he's most comfortable in, underwater, and he's pulled out all the tools from his bag and liberally using aspects from The Abyss, Titanic, Aliens from the deep etc. Going to see it in 3d imax after xmas so it might just end up being mind-blowing like the first one was visually.
