If the first feature film was compared to Pocahontas (and I was criticizing that comment) Avatar 2 seems to have stolen the plot from Peppa Pig, borrowing villains from Small Soldier. We are light years away from a masterpiece, and as soon as the social enthusiasm wanes, we will lucidly begin to agree with the press that demolished this film. Because a movie cannot be just Disneyland+3D. Avatar 2 is a good playground, with decent direction and music that didn't do enough. The cinematography is excellent and some images, especially the symbolic ones (few) save this film from a 0. Expand

The special effects are impressive, but they can't save this mess of a movie. It's like James Cameron took all the good ideas from the first film and left the bad ones in, resulting in a cinematic experience that is both boring and frustrating. In short, it's like taking a sip of water and realizing it's just more of the same old, recycled swill. Expand

The effect I received for 95 percent of the film's running time was much like that of a TV department in an electronics store: lots of visual quality, lots of fish, lots of water, but no credible story to hold up the images, no characters to really empathize with except for Jake's two sons who occasionally, with their “bro", managed to squeak out some feeling in me that could break the apathy of a film with an 80s script that was caricatured and almost identical to that of the previous film. The story is didactic, explicit, always guiding you as if you were a 5-year-old child who constantly has to be told what is happening and what emotion he should feel. The problem is that if you are a bit of an adult with a handful of good films behind you, you understand that this story, once you understand it, falls apart. Good 3D, nice photography and direction, but is not enough to consider this a memorable movie or a masterpiece. From the soundtrack, I expected a few more winks. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. That movie was bad.

I felt like I was watching a discovery documentary. Beautiful scenes with no content. If it were a serious movie, those 3 hours would be summed up in 30 minutes and the rest of the movie would be what Avatar 3 will probably be.

Spoilers below:

Jake is an **** the entire movie. Everyone dying around him and he doesn't care, he just wants to stay hidden.

The humans' motivation is that Jake is the leader of the resistance. He destroys production routes, attacks strategic bases, etc. But 10 minutes into the movie, he stops with all that and GONES. Soon, humans have their routes re-established and theoretically can do whatever they want without resistance. So why waste resources going after the guy they KNOW went into hiding?

The final fight scene is ridiculous. Out of nowhere ALL the navi disappear and it's just Jake's family fighting. It has no explanation. One hour they're there, then it's as if everyone turned around and only the 5 of the family stayed there fighting.

I also thought it was lazy to invent a clone of the villain from the first film instead of creating a new villain.

And speaking of a villain, what a ridiculous way for Jake to defeat him. Navi don't breathe underwater.

The whole fight is underwater and jake takes him down with a rear naked choke? Well, but the guy was no longer breathing, what difference would the lion choke make lol

Anyway. It doesn't make sense only after 3 hours does jake decide to counterattack

The guy can’t create a decent plot to save his life. The real heroes of the movie are the actors and cgi team who worked countless hours to deliver James Cameron’s half baked version of the cats musical in the FernGully Rain forest. Cameron constantly borrows and stitches together ideas that have already been done, and done much better I might add in their originals counterparts. Cameron is becoming more and more like George Lucas…where no one is speaking up to tell him he is past his prime. Sure make an almost 3.5 hour movie about nothing. Totally the people will love being bored out of their minds. And he wants to make more of this overhyped boring, half baked, and borrowed idea of a world? Please just don’t… Expand

The visual effects are breathtaking. That's the good news. The bad news is that the movie is 3 boring hours long and plays out like watching a bloodthirsty video game. The white man is bad as he destroys the environment, innocent animals and children. Yes children. It reminds you of cowboys killing the red men Indians but in Avatar substitute blue for red. That pretty much sums it up but why not throw in some bad whale hunters without compassion who torture and kill a mother whale with her calf alongside. All for a test tube of magic elixir so why not make whales extinct. And what would a James Cameron movie be without the Titanic sinking as he even incorporates that into his farce. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What a mess! Confused plot, first they want to kill everyone then only Jake for revenge, a senseless film full of stupid moments, and all this with the triple duration of what it was supposed to last in fact. Here's why the movie makes absolutely no sense: In the first, humans lose to the Avatars using the most advanced weapons, giant robots and an army of marines. In this film the villain returns in the form of Avatar with some of his companions to hunt down Jake, with what logic?! Cameron's logic that he wants to make a cinema series at all costs? It's not a good reason, so the film was rejected a priori. 3 more things to note: There is no way the water tribe can be as civilized as the woodland ones who have had an education from humans, they should be savages but no. The water tribe disappears completely during the final battle leaving the protagonists alone, at random. And what's the point of the human boy saving him "father not father" after what he did to his family?! I put 3 and not 2 for the special effects which are excellent. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The film was too long with a poorly devised plot. Most disappointing was that the powerful character of Neytiri Sully from the first movie had no significant role in this one. Her character could have been dropped from the second script with no consequence. The Sully family was too entitled, just showing up in a distant land knowing the trouble they would bring to their hosts. The short-sighted plan to protect the forest natives ignored what we learned of the "sky people" in the first film.  The humans would have used a scorched earth method of clearing the forest anyway to bring the Sullys back.
The movie started with talk about some kind of bracelet with beads that represented life events.  Really? A charm bracelet from Pandora? That sure has a commercial tie-in. Later when the ship was sinking, Cameron used imagery straight out of Titanic. Characters were trapped underwater behind a locked mesh door. That nod was just a distraction.
The man who led the hunt against the whale-like creatures lost his arm in the fight.  The same creature that once lost a fin to him fought back and the hunter's arm was severed. That parallel would make a great five-paragraph paper in high school freshman English class. It was otherwise another example of drivel in the script. The teen angst that drives the movie gets tiring. Dumb teenage behavior brings near-death consequences, and the adults state their disappointment without significant recourse. Then the kids do it again. This behavior even leads to the teens being used as hostages after they go out where they've been told not to go. Again.
I didn't like any of the characters in this script except the daughter Kiri. The first movie had me rooting for their win over evil forces but in this second movie they seemed to be battling their own poor choices.
I wish James Cameron could return my three hours and ten minutes. I had better things to do with it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What can i say? It's all about the CGI. 13 years in the making and still they can't come up with an original story. Just the same "skypeople's vs. avatars" war story. A one hour story told by a 3 hour movie. Only the nature scenes were worth watching, that's it. Enough said. If you need to go sci fi and upload the original bad guy's memory into an Avatar for a revenge movie, your writers are really lazy. Next movie they'll probably use him again, because his "son" saved him..really? Expand

Too many logic errors, bonds, dialogues between the characters, main villian, the extreme dead seriousness that is tried to be given with CGI, etc. The whole scenario is disgraceful. The script itself stolen from pocahantes, dance with wolves, peppe pig.13 years later James hasn't brought anything new, its a joke.

The visuals are nice, but it's not enough to carry the story, which... well most of the time when you tell similar stories, it would take half the time, and there would be more... something afterwards. This is of course because they want to give a greater visual experience, but that's not why I'm seeing the movie. So for me, the yellow ratings from 4-6 implies that I would would watch it again, if it happened to say be on TV, but wouldn't seek it out. The plot though is so dull I would never be able to sit through it again. Even the visuals, while nice, are missing something. The way they're arranged they could be done in a way that enhanced the movie better and just highlighted the CGI better. Expand

The storyline of this second version of Avatar was basically almost exactly the same as the first movie 13 years ago. It even seemed that it didn't know which direction it wanted to go and just mashed up different events and ideas randomly together into a 3 hour movie, which eventually left you with an unsatisfying feeling. The 3D effect is however yet again top notch, you feel as if the characters were real and alive on screen, however I am afraid that the 3D gimmick has worn out over time, that 3D alone wont contribute significantly enough anymore to make a film watchable. Much has been written about the cringe nature of having Kate Winslet and Sam Worthington hoot, holler, and ululate alongside a race-blind cast of blue Na’vi. I don’t have much to add except for the exquisite weirdness of seeing Kate Winslet stick out her tongue in displeasure takes me back to the days of witnessing the discovery of a local football team’s pregame warm up dance by the rest of the country, and the way that fetishcization of Pacific Island culture for Western masculinist culture felt so uncomfortable, even while so many other aspects of Pacific Island masculinity were mocked and criticized as effeminate and/or obscene.

But that’s what we do, right? We pick and choose the things that we like and ignore the things that don’t fit into our preferred vision of what the world should look like. It’s why James Cameron can feel so bold about depicting pregnant Na’vi hunters while also prompting the question, why is everyone in Pandora so straight? There are so many aspects of representation and racial tropes that one could find themselves mired in while discussing this movie, that it seems more useful to just assume that we’ve all turned our brains off for three hours about the oddities of such a big budget franchise assuming no development around concepts of colonization, presenting no self-critique, and doubling down on a lot of the stereotypes that were maybe forgiven back in a time when not every video game had the same quality as Cameron’s SFX. Today there are fewer excuses.

Avatar: Way of the Water takes the original **** plot of Company-Wants-to-Extract-Nondescript-Natural-Resource-So-It-Invents-Cloning/Mind Control-Technology by adding (spoiler) the ostensibly brilliant complication of Humanity-Has-Ruined-Earth-and-Needs-A-New-Planet, but this movie is not actually about that, because if it were, it would have to pit the native Na’vi against the remaining survivors of climate catastrophe, a band of innocent women and children who have no where else to go, two equally sympathetic sets of stories which necessitate coexistence or genocide. That plot would require some delicacy. Instead, this movie is more about rehashing the literal final battle scene from the first movie, but spread over a couple hours, with the character development of several youngsters to set up future films. And weirdly, talking whales?

The uncanniness of experiencing full conversations in voice over, or, as is the case in WotW, subtitles–which is even more confusing because it’s unclear whether the subtitling is for the Na’vi sign language that the youngster is signing or the… whale…talking–was the first true WTF moment of this movie. The audience was palpably disturbed. Friends and I leaned out of our lounge chairs to confirm that we had all just shared the same moment. I whispered to Friend about how she was going to have to explain this deeply disturbing moment to her husband when he got back from the bathroom (the first bathroom break he had taken in a movie in the entirety of 2022). “I was on board for everything until this moment,” she said to me, or everyone in the theater, unclear, because at this moment it was obvious that everyone was reassessing their motives for having come to see the movie.

Paolini’s Eragon was supposed to be a morality tale in the hubris of allowing a spoiled child publish without edit his unadulterated thoughts and feelings through the prism of fantasy. But Cameron took both of these notes presumably and then doubled down hard on talking whales. The use of telepathy as communication between rider and beast was widely described as clumsy and stupid (and I have my own preferences for why it doesn’t work). The problem is that James Cameron didn’t invent the concept of talking whales. What’s worse is he didn’t invent the concept of hyper intelligent talking whales who’ve taken a vow of pacifism which leads to an outcast. For that, you’d have to go to the author Tamora Pierce.

Daja Kisubo (right) is marked as unlucky after a tragic event kills the rest of her people through no fault of her own and she fights the stigma of her misfortune throughout her story, and in yet ANOTHER Tamora Pierce book series whales are featured with the gift of speech and internal politics that prevent them from attacking ships, I am told by Tamora Pierce fan, Wife. So so much more to say but I'm hitting the character limit.

There are long periods of dull insignificance, without entertainment that made it insufferable for me. It's easily twice as long as the the substance of it can justify.

The odd contradiction here is the mixture of violence with new age wonder and beauty. People who enjoy action movies don't tend to be interested in connections with the universe and the long periods of moving wallpaper. And people who are enlightened don't generally want to watch people being shot at and blown up.

And on the action part, the degree to which people we're supposed to care about are continually in peril and miraculously survive is painful to watch. I just didn't care pretty from even early on when the pattern of plot armour became clear. And it is not believable for any battle to even be a contest. I don't know how any country on our planet was ever colonised frankly.

Finally, for me, the visual character design is a problem because for all of the technology thrown at this, the people do not seem 'real'. They're closer to smurfs than people and I have never shaken that feeling. The franchise is made from characters whose design will always appear fake no matter how well rendered.

I would never pay nor choose to watch an Avatar movie.

And thus was born Avatar: Way of the Water

The entire movie felt forced in most parts. Unnatural. Thrust from one sequence to the next without continuity or reason.

Don't get me wrong, there are a few good scenes and it's a visual feast. But then Jake and his family are completely abandoned at the end, and left to fight the general by themselves. WHAT?!? Mind-numbing amateur hour first-draft screenwriting.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Contradictory, sagging in the scenario plan of the film. The main question is: WHY DID EVERYONE FORGET ABOUT THE TREE OF SOULS?! After all, the whole point of the first film is that if it is demolished, the tribes will die.
Why don't they use what is shown in the first minutes after landing, burning the ground?
Whale hunting is introduced retroactively, although in the first part people came only for minerals. The son of the villain from the first part is presented, although he was not in the first part. Why does the main villain, who had his memory loaded BEFORE the birth of his son, begin to treat him in such a way that he releases the prisoner? A lot of deus ex machina.
After all, why do they even need to hunt for the main character if he withdrew himself by flying to the islands?
But yes, a beautiful picture. For the sake of which the film stretches for 3 hours, although the scenario load there is no more than 1.5-2 hours.

As its predasessor it feel into a same narrative trap and prioritised world setting and already established conflict to drive the characters and audience. Unraveling family drama as a sub plot underlining the main story which evolves around running away and finding a new home within a different tribe. All while being blindly chased by a same villain that now lacks bigger motive than last time. Development and status behind the human race lacks deeper explanation. Music is solid but sometimes overwelming trying to revoke old descriptions by aspiring too much on making new ones. We never again get a sensible and spiritual approach as the night life scenes in the old movie. Although this time we saw more realistic and very immersive graphics in natural environments, they didnt surve the plot as well as last time. Dialogs are awful with the most used word of these evolved creatures being "bro". What to tell the studio and its director then is not the way to go. Expand

Earth baddies come back to Pandora to get Sully for treason, but also to terraform and colonize Pandora, so he tells his wife and kids "Let's run away because these angry earth dudes are after me personally, so our presence here is endangering the other tribesmen", and they do, leaving everyone behind to be slaughtered by an advancing army of aggressive aliens. Some Toruk-Makto, eh?

But instead of settling somewhere far away where they can't be found they join another tribe, apparently with the scope of endangering them instead, because that is exactly what ultimately happens. Bad humans catch up with Sully in his hew village and turn everyone's life to hell, but instead of feeling a bit annoyed with this family for bringing war with them, the locals are like "Yay! You are our brethren now! In fact, we are so pleased with y'all, why don't you stay with us forever! Here's our underwater Sacred Tree - go ponytail-copulate with it to complete the ritual!"

And they do.
The End.

So Jake, now has a family, and they are basically more American then tribal, no respect, swear and everything...well don't Jake. And guess what..the humans are back, and the guys who you thought where dead in the last one..nah..they brought them all back. So Jake's family get challenged by a marine we thought was dead but is now a blue guy and his buddy's and they decide to go and hide with another tribe for some reason, so the war finds them (well done again Jake.. you really screwed everyone) and then cliche plot hole, cliche plot hole cliche plot hole happens, Jake blows up a ship then end. And this boring badly written nonsense lasts 3 hours. Only reason I can recommend is if you suffer from insomnia, you will fall asleep half way through.
