Negative points for story - the cast is let down massively by it, but I don't believe the foundations are good. Soft soft9 for the effects effort, but HFR is still horrible and is not helped by constant switching between that and normal FR. Negative points for story - the cast is let down massively by it, but I don't believe the foundations are good. Soft soft sci-fi (read - don't think about it). Like the equivalent of lift music - sci-fi for people who don't like sci-fi. 'Look! Really tall blue human tribes and whales that talk and everything is connected and nice humans try to make it better but bad humans are selfish and want to smash everything, etc. etc. If you're between 8 and 16 you may absolutely love it though? Just watch Prey instead. Says everything Avatar tries to without even trying. Someone put Cameron out to pasture now. Cynical box office grab. Expand

Many banal tropes and dialogues — it didn’t add anything new to cinema nor to the greater collection of modern and historical stories. This will be a hit for the 12-year-olds and it can be a break from the monotony of your 9-5.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Full disclosure: Avatar is one of my very favorite movies and I've seen it about 20 times and own not one, but two copies. Lol I've waited so long for this to come out but was disappointed in the one dimensional plot (revenge from the army guy against Jake Sully). Even the visuals, while very beautiful couldn't make up for it. The story also felt very lazy, like they just took the same formula and repeated it in a different area on Pandora (only with 1/4 of storyline). Hoping the next one is better!!! Expand

Regardless of how I feel about 48 FPS, one thing I can say for sure is that they should have just stuck to one frame rate for the whole film. But the movie constantly swaps around, seemingly at random. Different shots in the same scene will jarring my change frame rate, with no rhyme or reason, and it’s super distracting every time. The characters will just be walking and talking, and then a single shot will suddenly be in 48, and then it goes back to normal. In the same scene.

That aside, I don’t like the 48 fps at all. It really highlighted how everything in this film is just computer generated. Of course it’s going to look computer generated to some degree, the whole movie is CGI essentially, but in 48 fps it’s more apparent than ever. It looks like a really advanced looking video game engine tech demo a lot of the time, instead of a movie. I wish I could comment more on the quality of the movie itself— lots of scenes and shots are gorgeous, especially the underwater ones as you’d expect, but feeling like I was watching a game cutscene took me out of it so much. Pretty disappointing.

Visually speaking, it's the best out there. In terms of story telling, the movie takes a basic, overused story and puts it in a unique and interesting scenario. It is able to barely juggle all the characters, despite their basic dialogue. Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) steals the show with their emotional and fantastic performance. Honestly, the CGI and visuals are so impressive that one can think it was shot in the future. Dont get me wrong, the script is not perfect, the dialogue is sometimes sketchy, but the drama and intenseness picks up in the unforgettable final act which is stuffed with emotions, explosions and scenes which parallel with Titanic. The movie is an ode to nature, its an ode to cinematography, and its an ode to complex story telling, which sometimes feels perfect, and sometimes feels rushed or overhauled. Expand

Simply BEAUTIFUL.
Avatar 2 explore in a deeper way the characters and set a new beginning for the war of Pandora.
Jake's sons are well developed and interesting characters, the Metkayna tribe is beautiful and their Way of Water is fascinating with outstanding creatures and beautiful philosophy.
Yes, Quaritch return and break out from the stereotype of the "bad marine", even him is developed more and that's really good.
Avatar 2 is technically a masterpiece with a story more "of transition" but crucial for the develope of characters and always enjoyable, with even comedy scenes never cringy (not marvel style, for god sake...).

Cameron you're a genius, thanks!

I've waited for this moment for 13 years, and Avatar 2 didn't disappoint me. Every single scene was so magical, characters gradually brought me out of the real world, and I totally lived in Pandora. Though some people said the plot was incompleted and unconvinced, it is because there are 3 more movies to develop the plot. If they did everything in Avatar 2 then what else was left in the following ones? The unfinished problems will be solved in parts 3, 4, and 5, and that’s why the ending was the open one. Just live in the moment. No words can describe my emotions when I experienced Avatar - top 1 of the list of my favorite movies ever. Expand

Most fun I've had in the theater since the last Avatar movie. Look I loved Dune, loved Bladerunner 2049 but this is a different deal. It's at once lighter and more gut wrenching. Since everything is political these days, here's the deal... people on the right will **** about the woo woo earth Goddess religion, the "noble savage", "native people good/America/military/Corporations/white people bad" angle, and the "save the planet" stuff while people on the left will decry the patriarchal society, the testosterone filled, strong, positive male characters, the emphasis on children and family stuff. Meanwhile movie snobs will say the classic heroic plot is too cookie cutter and shallow. I say, check your politics at the door and show up for one of the most amazing action adventure stories ever brought to the screen. Gorgeous, funny, heart felt and unique. Absolute 10 out of 10 for me! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Not as epic as the first one. Movie is setup for future sequels since there’s no proper conclusion. New plot device in this movie is some goo from a fish. Human should have thought about cloning that fish instead. Too many kids with each their own problems. A little bit too much montages of swimming and bounding with fishes. Anyway, biggest disappointment for me is no proper conclusion of sky people and the main vilain. Expand

Expand

The movie is crafted for people who like movies and like seeing films in theaters. There's a lot to look at. Eventually it builds to a long third act, several action scenarios stacked up. I found it less New Age cringy than A1. It's more grounded in emotions and ethnography of the two Navi tribes. The themes of eco-connection, tolerance and community belonging remain timely. Fans of Horizon Forbidden West will see more spectacular woven architecture. Expand

It was an experience like no other, with well written likable characters. Ive been waiting since the first movie came out for a sequel and had high expectations for it, my standards were met and over-achieved! Fortunately, has topped the first movie of the franchise, becoming my new favorite movie of all times!
I see many people complain on how "boring the plot is" or "it's beautiful but the plot is predictable" They're not seeing the movie how James Cameron wants them to.
It is a film about indigenous and animals suffering because of human greed, it wants you to empathize and immerse yourself. Seeing how I've re-watched Avatar more times than I can count, I do have a sole understanding of the movie and its sequel. You have to see the film in Cameron's eyes, in fact, the characters eyes! A gorgeous movie with a beautiful story. Will watch again, many more times!

I can safely say that CGI has never looked this good in a movie before, especially when you consider the meandering quality of CGI in recent Disney produced films. This movie, without a doubt, does have incredible visuals; however…the rest of this long awaited Sci-Fi epic is fairly inconsistent. The film is over three hours long yet it still had some pretty noticeable pacing issues, with certain plot points needing more context and time to grow and others not making much sense at all. The Way of Water also has a pretty inconsistent plot that a lot of the time makes the film feel like its two entirely different movies, with neither being able fully tell a great story. I would recommend seeing The Way of Water despite my criticisms; if only for the revolutionary visuals, pretty decent performances, and a few really incredible scenes that both thematically and cinematically blew me away. I do look forward to future entries in this franchise and hope that more context and detail is added to the overall multi-film long story that Director James Cameron wants to tell. It will be interesting to see where these movies will go in the future, that's for sure. Expand

It was a huge spectacle with a new planet, Pandora; indigenous people, the Na’vi; motion capture performances and a lot of never-before-seen technology. The plot was pretty basic, but the impact of the all the technical impacts made it more than the sum of its parts. Here, we are all these years later and finally the long-awaited sequel has been released. James Cameron has submerged us in the waters of Pandora for the first of many sequels called Avatar: The Way of Water.

As a quick refresher, at the end of Avatar, Jake Sully, who was human in Avatar form, becomes part of the Na’vi. He’s fallen in love with Neytiri and her people. Years later, we find Jake Sully living a peaceful life with his family in the forests of Pandora, but the threat of the sky people’s return looms. Of course, that threat comes to destroy Jake’s family’s peace. Jake must work with Neytiri and the army of the Na’vi race to protect their home. Blue combat hijinks ensue.

Now, everything about this movie screams big screen viewing. We have James Cameron, a long delay since the first movie, awesome tech and CGI, big fight scenes etc. This highly imaginative movie just lacks imagination. Yes, that seems contradictory to state, but it’s the best way to describe what’s going on here. For such a long delay for this sequel to come, Cameron and crew failed to use those years to expand upon the Avatar universe and tell a more interesting story. While we’re dealing with slightly new creatures that live in the water rather than the forest, the plot is basically the same as the original. The real question is whether the new technology that’s been developed and utilized in making The Way of Water makes this movie worthwhile. I’m fairly ambivalent about it.

On one hand, the spectacle of the effects is truly stunning. The water is so blue and clear. The colors are dazzling. Your eyes can barely keep up because there is something new to see, it seems, in every frame. There are animals that we haven’t seen before that dominate the screen. Those animals have personalities of their own. The integration of real human performances with the motion capture performances is pretty seamless as well. There really isn’t anything wrong with the look of Avatar: The Way of Water. Also, when the action kicks into high gear 90 minutes into the movie, the tension and momentum take over and make the last 90 minutes sail by.

On the other hand, when a movie is 3 hours long, it would be great for it to be at least a little unpredictable. It feels like every beat of the story is either a carbon copy of what happened in the original or it is a predictable extension of what’s to come. Furthermore, the obvious environmental theme is not very subtle. It is good that the filmmakers have a point of view and that this crazy, action spectacle has something to say about our world, but does it have to be so obvious? Really, 3 hours to tell this story??? No, sir! Not necessary.

S2S: Official Rating Scale
Ultimately, the wait for Avatar: The Way of Water was worth it. The technology and effects that are used to bring this movie to life are truly spectacular. The story itself is not as imaginative as the tools used to tell it. Also, you have to sacrifice 3 hours of your day to this. The movie should be seen on the big screen – that’s pretty obvious – but an early matinee should suffice. Get a bowl of popcorn and you might need another snack to tide you over.

It was a wild experience as I have never seen such amazing CGI in a film. James Cameron, the director, then announced he was making 3-4 sequels to Avatar which was kind of baffling. 13 years later, we finally get a sequel. Was the sequel worth the wait?

Firstly, the visuals of this movie are somehow even more amazing than the first film. The forest of Pandora looks more stunning than it did 13 years ago; the advance in technology is very evident. The scenes in the water look gorgeous and so real that it's hard to believe it is CGI at times. One thing with the first movie was that it felt like live-action people were in a green screen room. Avatar: The Way of Water is mostly CGI with live-action blended in. We see live-action characters move in the same scene as CGI characters and interact with one another like living beings. It didn't give that green-screen feeling, which was awesome. I also love the world-building and design of the world. There are water-based Navi clans with looks and customs that are different from the forest Navi. You can see it in their skin colour and the design of their hands and tails. The sea creatures also have great designs with their own rules and how they operate. It was clear a lot of thought was put into everything. The original 2 main characters, Jake and Neytiri, return from the 1st film but they are not the main focus this time. The main characters are their kids with Sigourney Weaver returning but playing as one of those kid characters instead. I was a little worried as kid characters tend to be annoying but I think the writer did a good job of making the kids not completely annoying. Sigourney is surprisingly convincing as a young kid and I was interested to see more of her character in the future. I think James succeeds in making us care more about these new characters than he did in Avatar 1. Jake, despite not being at the forefront this time, has his character arc. He is no longer the fearless leader he was in the 1st film as he now has 4 kids to take care of. His priority is different and he struggles with that. Stephen Lang also returns as the antagonist, Colonel Miles, again despite dying in the 1st film. He was very one-dimensional in the 1st Avatar but here they do try to give him some more depth which I appreciate.

However, Neytiri is unfortunately very sideline in this sequel. She is barely relevant until the end of the movie and even then, she doesn't have any character arc. If anything, I feel like her character somehow feels worse here. One thing I struggled with in the 1st film was remembering names including that of the main characters. Unfortunately, I still have this issue in The Way of Water. This is thanks to the fact that a character's name only ever seems to be mentioned once and never again which makes it difficult to remember anyone. For example, Kate Winslet of Titanic fame is in this movie but I wouldn't be able to tell you what her character's name was for the life of me. In terms of the story, it's very simple and by the book. It is about the kids learning the customs of a clan and struggling to fit in which sounds awfully similar to the 1st film or a high school drama. The plot works fine but it is very bland and predictable. Every cliché and trope you see from a coming-of-age story is here. The movie is also really long with a run time of 192 minutes. I'm not sure the plot justified that run time as there were many moments where a lot doesn't happen and could've been cut to reduce the runtime. James Horner, the original composer of Avatar, passed away and was thus replaced by Simon Franglen. Simon does a serviceable job but the music score is just not very memorable compared to Jame's music score. The best soundtrack in The Way of Water is the ones that were reused. Overall, Avatar: The Way of Water is a proper cinematic experience. Yes, the movie's plot and characters aren't that memorable but the visuals are truly amazing. In an era where it feels like we get a lot of poorly made CGI, it is a breath of fresh air to have a movie that has beautiful-looking CGI for what feels like the entire movie! Watching in it cinema with IMAX 3D was a terrific experience and it is the best way to watch Avatar: The Way of Water. I'm thoroughly looking forward to the sequels!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What a mess! Confused plot, first they want to kill everyone then only Jake for revenge, a senseless film full of stupid moments, and all this with the triple duration of what it was supposed to last in fact. Here's why the movie makes absolutely no sense: In the first, humans lose to the Avatars using the most advanced weapons, giant robots and an army of marines. In this film the villain returns in the form of Avatar with some of his companions to hunt down Jake, with what logic?! Cameron's logic that he wants to make a cinema series at all costs? It's not a good reason, so the film was rejected a priori. 3 more things to note: There is no way the water tribe can be as civilized as the woodland ones who have had an education from humans, they should be savages but no. The water tribe disappears completely during the final battle leaving the protagonists alone, at random. And what's the point of the human boy saving him "father not father" after what he did to his family?! I put 3 and not 2 for the special effects which are excellent. Expand

Those who base their entire review on the plot are just delusional. You can't objectively watch this movie and say it isn't one of the most stunning visual and cinematographic experiences you ever had, if not the best one.

The level of detail Cameron put in this is actually unbelievable. If you put your attention on the world building, on the amount of credible alien-animal creatures he created, on the scenery he imagined, you will be stunned.

Talking about the plot, it may be simple (just as some of the highest rated movies ever), but it improved a lot from the first one. Besides, if you dig just a little bit deeper, you will notice a lot of symbolism, mythology and sub-plots which develop throughout the movie.

During its 3 hour running time, it touches themes such as the strength of family values, the fallacies of group ideologies and traditions, the psychological toll of being different and the ever changing human-nature relationship. It makes you fall in love with Pandora, and in return, to our Planet.

You can really tell Cameron and his team spent years not only researching ancient human tribes dynamics and mythology to make the movie ones realistic, but also creating new recording techniques that will improve the cinema industry from now on.

Everything you see seems real: there's no distinction between CGI and reality. I'd also like to highlight Zoe Saldana and Sigourney Weaver acting. Just amazing.

If you want to live an almost out of body experience and just be amazed for three hours, go watch it. You won't regret it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Visually Amazing but sadly Too Long

This time, I made an exception by havin an expectation bout this movie. Ofc, its coz this is directed by one of the greatest directors in Hollywood, James Cameron. Luckily, this movie reaches my expectation.

This movie is a sequel to the previous movie with a plot in Pandora Planet, full of alien races named Avatar. After the failure of the human race to take over the planet, some of them seek revenge for a rebellious human officer, Jake Sully who is actually siding with them rather than the human race. Then, this movie is about Jake Sully's famz survival from human revenge.

What I love about this movie are the visuals, audio, and magical world. Ofc, it happens because the previous movie also gives these to the audiences. So, it reaches the audience's expectations including mine. But, the best thing is visual. Feels very magical and mesmerizing. From the beginning, the movie also gives a blueish world all the time. To make it better, it gives us fictional ethnic culture including voices that are kinda like an animal wants to bite, lol. Besides that, the best plot happens when the ending is narrated through 3 different plots which each different struggles. I didn’t expect this and might be similar to the Titanic movie coz happened in the water too.

Sadly, this movie is too long. More than 3 hrs? Why? I keep wondering about this movie's duration. I didn’t think it deserve that long. Perhaps, 2-2.5 hrs still plausible. I drank coffee before watching but sadly I feel so sleepy when starting around 2 hrs, lol. Besides that, this movie so year-end vibes because bring family issues and their importance of them. Tbh, I get bored with this but no offense, it’s a purely subjective opinion.

The bottom line, this movie perfectly has amazing visuals! The ending was also great! The best starter pack are coffee, chips or snack or popcorn, Dolby atmos studio, and maybe IMAX? Perfectly fulfilled our year-end vibes, but sometimes is boring, lol. Great movie to watch! This is a James Cameron artwork! He was the director of Titanic in case u don’t know him, shame on you if u really don’t know HAHA.
7/10.

Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) is now a Na'vi and living on PandoraWell the long wait is finally over. 13 years after the 2009 global phenomenon took the world and box office by storm, James Cameron delivers with this long belated sequel. Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) is now a Na'vi and living on Pandora among the Omaticaya clan as their leader alongside Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) and their children. However, an old and familiar threat rises that threatens their home and family once again, forcing them to turn to another clan of water-dwelling Na'vi for help, and along the way, they learn to embrace the way of water (corny pun intended.) I had somewhat high hopes for this, seeing as it's been so long since the original film, and all this time I've been eagerly awaiting and anticipating to see what Cameron might do next with this spectacle of a world that he practically created from the ground up. Admittedly, I was also curious to see if he'd be able to craft a more decent story this time around too, seeing as the first film's writing/story wasn't exactly the strongest or most original material (a lot of it to this day still feels an awful lot like 'Dances With Wolves' in space.) The final results are almost exactly what I expected them to be however: a visually dazzling experience albeit with highly uninspired and derivative storytelling. The film's story not only very obviously borrows and follows several of the first film's plot points and tropes beat for beat (even down to the same musical score cues), but it also can't help but feel highly derivative of several other classic films and properties in several scenes and moments, ranging from everything from 'The Lion King ', 'Jaws', and even the just-released 'Black Panther: Wakanda Forever', which also felt like an 'Avatar' wannabe of a film in its own right, but I digress. I will say that the emphasis on the familial aspect in this film is genuinely touching, and you really do feel for Jake and his family often times throughout the film, and Worthington and Saldana both give solid and dedicated performances here. The previous film's villain Stephen Lang also returns in a rather unexpected way, and he also has his fair share of intense scenes and showdowns with the heroes. Seeing Sigourney Weaver here in a different role as a new Na'vi character was also somewhat unusual, but worked much better than I initially thought it would. Kate Winslet also delivers a commanding presence onscreen whenever we see her character. The action scenes throughout are also very well-crafted, particularly the final battle, which offers some genuinely tense moments throughout that I couldn't help but be reminded of another certain Cameron film that involved a famous sinking ship (*hint hint*) Last but far from least, the visuals and grand world of Pandora, both land and water, are the real star of the show of course. If not his scriptwriting abilities, never doubt Cameron's visual storytelling abilities, because the CGI and effects here do NOT disappoint! Seriously, see this bad boy in IMAX if you can! It's well worth the extra cost! Every tiny and obscure little detail onscreen is so unbelievably vibrant and fully realized! It truly has to be seen to be believed! Overall, another thinly-written and uninspired story that can't help but make the film feel a little too much like 'Avatar: Greatest Hits/Moments Playlist' at times certainly didn't spoil my mesmerization thanks entirely to the absolutely beautiful, grand, and lush visuals that Cameron never disappoints with. All things considered, it still was pretty fun returning to Pandora after such a long wait. Expand

The underwater sequences especially were detailed, I couldn't catch everything even after watching the movie twice. I saw it first in Reald 3D. I wasn't particularly impressed by the 3D with that format but wow I saw it in the laser ultra 3D with the high frame rate the second time and it was simply jawdropping. The images were so crisp, bright, and detailed and the 3D was so immmersive especially during the water sequences and the final battle, it was the best 3D experience I've ever had. The action sequences are truly fantastic and I haven't seen any sequences like this before. I was alittle bit bothered by the high frame rate which gave some of the earlier action sequences a really unnatural video game like feel, but I got used to it. I think the whale thing went on too long and that is when the film drags. 15 to 20 minutes I think could have been shaved off. The story is one we have seen many times before but I didn't really care because it's not the point of this movie or the previous one. I was honestly sad to leave Pandora when the film ended. I wanted the next chapter to start immediately. I cared for the characters more in this movie I genuinely felt emotional in some scenes. I am planning to see it the third time on IMAX 3D and I am definitely seeing it again on the laser ultra screen which just had stunning picture quality. Expand

Avatar: The Way of Water is just James Cameron's version of Studio Ghibli's Princess Mononoke minus the love and charm that makes Princess Mononoke great

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. That movie was bad.

I felt like I was watching a discovery documentary. Beautiful scenes with no content. If it were a serious movie, those 3 hours would be summed up in 30 minutes and the rest of the movie would be what Avatar 3 will probably be.

Spoilers below:

Jake is an **** the entire movie. Everyone dying around him and he doesn't care, he just wants to stay hidden.

The humans' motivation is that Jake is the leader of the resistance. He destroys production routes, attacks strategic bases, etc. But 10 minutes into the movie, he stops with all that and GONES. Soon, humans have their routes re-established and theoretically can do whatever they want without resistance. So why waste resources going after the guy they KNOW went into hiding?

The final fight scene is ridiculous. Out of nowhere ALL the navi disappear and it's just Jake's family fighting. It has no explanation. One hour they're there, then it's as if everyone turned around and only the 5 of the family stayed there fighting.

I also thought it was lazy to invent a clone of the villain from the first film instead of creating a new villain.

And speaking of a villain, what a ridiculous way for Jake to defeat him. Navi don't breathe underwater.

The whole fight is underwater and jake takes him down with a rear naked choke? Well, but the guy was no longer breathing, what difference would the lion choke make lol

Anyway. It doesn't make sense only after 3 hours does jake decide to counterattack

Um filme que emociona e fascina aqueles que são aficionados em filmes futuristas em mundos distante, um dos filmes que utilizam de forma genial a tecnologia 3D.

Watching "Avatar: The Way of Water," I was reminded of how impersonal the Hollywood machine has become over the last few decades and how often the blockbusters that truly make an impact on the form have displayed the personal touch of their creator. Think of how the biggest and best films of George Lucas and Steven Spielberg couldn't have been made by anyone else. "Avatar: The Way of Water" is a James Cameron blockbuster, through and through. Expand

Cameron drew me into a world that is full of rich and diverse life and vivid colors. People keep praising the visuals, and rightly so—but the sound design was fantastic as well. The world truly comes alive. I came into it speculative of the story quality and I did not leave disappointed. It carries on from the first movie’s narrative pretty well and sets up the upcoming future installments with a new generation of characters to lead the way. I actually really enjoy this world Cameron has made, and am eager to see what happens next. Expand
