The technique is remarkable: the facial expressions, the rendering of the liquids, the environment, etc... The soundtrack is majestic and immersive. I was able to see the film in Dolby Atmos, and that adds more immersion. The scenario when it - without spoiler-, is however not revolutionary, but it works. He is fairly fair in the father-son emotion in particular. I had concerns about Disney, but the film seems to have been consciously directed by Cameron. Can't wait to see the next episodes of the saga. Expand

Besides that, I was really surprisingly amazed by this movie. It takes all the time it needs to show the beauty of the ocean and everything around it. Never seen a high-budget movie do that on this level. There were so many moments that were visually breathtaking and immersive. That was what I was hoping for and the movie really didn't disappoint.
You can clearly see that this movie is well-crafted by people that cared about making a good experience. I was really entertained, had fun, what else do you want ^^.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. this movie will define cinema for years and years to come. just like we study the works of kubrick and scorsese, film students will come to learn about the level of filmmaking consistenty shown by one James Cameron. simply put, the visuals in this movie were JAW DROPPING. my wife and I left the theater with the same feeling we had during the first avengers movie, one of pure joy. kudos to the people who worked on this movie for making something truly special. took one point off cause I don't like how negatively the military was portrayed. Um espetáculo visual! Faz sentido esperar tanto tempo pro CGI evoluir e conseguirem reproduzir mundos tão detalhados e cheios de vida. A historia é bem simples, mas a interação dos personagens com o ecossistema do planeta é muito bom.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Contradictory, sagging in the scenario plan of the film. The main question is: WHY DID EVERYONE FORGET ABOUT THE TREE OF SOULS?! After all, the whole point of the first film is that if it is demolished, the tribes will die.
Why don't they use what is shown in the first minutes after landing, burning the ground?
Whale hunting is introduced retroactively, although in the first part people came only for minerals. The son of the villain from the first part is presented, although he was not in the first part. Why does the main villain, who had his memory loaded BEFORE the birth of his son, begin to treat him in such a way that he releases the prisoner? A lot of deus ex machina.
After all, why do they even need to hunt for the main character if he withdrew himself by flying to the islands?
But yes, a beautiful picture. For the sake of which the film stretches for 3 hours, although the scenario load there is no more than 1.5-2 hours.

The second installment failed to surprise me, not even visually - and i was adamant beforehand that this vastly successful flick would succeed in doing just that, impartial of the consistency of its storyline and characters.
On the contrary, the sum of its parts achieved the opposite. The plot does not appear to make any sense and delivers very little of substance. On top of that, there is no real concluding consequences either, despite it trying so hard to summon emotional attachment to the characters. I am amazed by the lack of creativity, also - one of the strengths of the first movie. It was all same, same, but with fins and in a different shade of blue. Visuals and sound, while indisputably top-notch, could not convince me to overlook the lack of a meaningful plot, three-dimensional & relatable characters and the creative cultural & environmental exploration of 'The Way of Water'. In the end, i am left with huge disappointment. At least, i was not expecting that. I am giving it a 4 out of 10, because of its gorgeous, but expected visuals.

The same villain, bought back from the dead, the same plot, the same protagonist. A fish replaces the bird as the beast everyone is scared of. Bored senseless for 3.5 hours.

Just watch the first film with a glass of water in front of your eyes.

If you enjoyed the first movie you will inevitably enjoy this one too. Sure, the story isn’t revolutionary, but we’re not trying to reinvent the wheel in that regard. It’s the ground breaking technology and innovative ways of filmmaking that James Cameron is pursuing with this franchise. Something he’s clearly wanted to dissect and break down for a long time. Visual effects in other Hollywood films are unmatched to The Way of Water. This is why I pay money to go to the movie theatre. Expand

But it largely feels like a repeat in a new setting. If the audience is familiar with what is already established, then the movie should be shorter!

The special effects are spectacular, and I went to a 3D showing to be as immersed in them as I could. But there is so much focus on immersion that the plot is stretched thin. Was it really necessary to show the water and forest tribes make repeated attempts at bonding?

At least the action sequences are enjoyable. They are also extensive in length, but it felt like a pay-off for sitting through the lethargic second act. One of the deaths, though only shown briefly, was a dismemberment, which was unexpected in a PG-13 movie. "Avatar 2" is technically well-made, but my level of entertainment was inconsistent. James Cameron claims that this movie is just "setting the table" for the "Avatar" installments to come. If we get a more substantial plot next time, let's hope the runtime doesn't stretch even longer.

it's so absurd, the characters take lots of absurd desisions and they're completly ignore the human menace for half of the movie

and at the end they are like "oh no,running away of our problems is not the solution"

yeah if you attach a lot of importance to coherence and the scenario, avoid this, you will get bored and then get angry

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The watery plot at least makes the title fitting.

Earth baddies come back to Pandora to get Sully for treason, but also to terraform and colonize Pandora, so he tells his wife and kids "Let's run away because these angry earth dudes are after me personally, so our presence here is endangering the other tribesmen", and they do, leaving everyone behind to be slaughtered by an advancing army of aggressive aliens. Some Toruk-Makto, eh?

But instead of settling somewhere far away where they can't be found they join another tribe, apparently with the scope of endangering them instead, because that is exactly what ultimately happens. Bad humans catch up with Sully in his hew village and turn everyone's life to hell, but instead of feeling a bit annoyed with this family for bringing war with them, the locals are like "Yay! You are our brethren now! In fact, we are so pleased with y'all, why don't you stay with us forever! Here's our underwater Sacred Tree - go ponytail-copulate with it to complete the ritual!"

And they do.
The End.

As its predasessor it feel into a same narrative trap and prioritised world setting and already established conflict to drive the characters and audience. Unraveling family drama as a sub plot underlining the main story which evolves around running away and finding a new home within a different tribe. All while being blindly chased by a same villain that now lacks bigger motive than last time. Development and status behind the human race lacks deeper explanation. Music is solid but sometimes overwelming trying to revoke old descriptions by aspiring too much on making new ones. We never again get a sensible and spiritual approach as the night life scenes in the old movie. Although this time we saw more realistic and very immersive graphics in natural environments, they didnt surve the plot as well as last time. Dialogs are awful with the most used word of these evolved creatures being "bro". What to tell the studio and its director then is not the way to go. Expand

The biggest problem this film faced was the significant time jump between release dates, however, Cameron managed to maneuver around this, creating a captivating story that left plenty of room for further developments. Unlike the first film, this one focused heavily on emotions and familial relationships. It created the bond that so many of us long for when it comes to friends and family, and it made the events of the film a little more harrowing as they established very quickly that nobody is safe. Much like the first film, this one continued the storyline of environmentalism and colonization, effectively putting the audience in a place that has them rooting on the side of the Na’vi – and against their own people.

In order to tell this story in the manner that was intended, Cameron waited until he had the technology available to create an immersive world for his audience. Especially with the use of IMAX and 3D effects, the viewer can feel transported to Pandora for the full length of the film, and will grow to miss this universe when the credits roll and the screen fades to black. The CGI for this film was masterful in every way and it can be difficult to find a cast that possesses the talent to perform with the technology that will assist in building this world. That being said, casting director, Margery Simkin, could not have done a better job. While the entire cast provided wonderful performances, Zoe Saldana (Neytiri) stood out with her emotional performance as not only a warrior, but a mother and wife as well. It was refreshing to see that, although she has different priorities now, she still held on to her values and beliefs in the same manner as the first film.

The only thing that I felt this film lacked was a memorable soundtrack, as it seemed to blend in to the background of the film and was not as noticeable to me. However, this is not always a bad thing. It was still an important aspect in creating the desired atmosphere, and it did not overshadow the incredible action sequences that appeared throughout the entire film.

With perfect pacing on a three-hour story that left me wanting more, it comes as no surprise that this film is quickly approaching the coveted $2 billion box office mark that very few films have seen – one of those being its predecessor, and another being Titanic (1997), all with the same director. Whether you are a fan of the franchise, director, actors, or just mildly interested in the story, I recommend seeing this film in theaters as it is a heartwarming and thought-provoking experience that is sure to make you excited for the third film.

Not as good as the original but still worth seeing in theaters in full 3D (as of writing this) for the visual spectacle alone and to escape into the environmentalist primitive utopia of Pandora. That's still fun and unique.

James Cameron is an old man that probably should have made this movie 12 years ago when he had more spark left and the spectacle of Avatar was more fresh. Often directors this past their prime can't really make anything worthwhile. So it's a minor miracle it's still as well done as it is.

It drags on, especially in the middle. It felt, to me, at times it almost wanted to be a streaming television miniseries so they could dwell on the new introduced tribes and environments. But, it had to be a 3D movie so we get a bit of a Frankenstein. It's still so spectacular in the presentation of its fantasy world that the slog is not too distracting. The story is still simple and "iconic" with very obvious themes of good vs evil. But that also still mostly works as the first. The action scenes are pumping and brutal in the final stage of the movie and where it shines as a film experience. The emotional heart tugging moments simple though they are still hit home, at least to me. All in all still worthwhile unless you absolutely HATE 3 hour environmental fests that are clearly overly in love with alien cat indians.

If the storyline is too basic, may as well critique the other 90% of new movies. Either stop acting like sheep or assert your faceted opinions consistently.
Overall, must see. I look forward to the next films delving deeper into a more overarching story.
I would rate it a 9/10 because of some minor plot holes, but 7.4 is low, 67 for critics is laughable. The disproportionate group of haters have all congregated here to generate a score that isn't representative of the general population.

Same villain, with a revival twist, same agenda, same narrative etc… with an ending fight sequence like the first one that just doesnt do well and very unexplained. Like you gathered a whole army and tribe to fight for you and species to help fight the evil humans yet they are present for only the first 2 minutes and ohh ofcourse how “unexpected” one of the main characters which we barely connected to throughout the movie dies all of the sudden and we are supposed to care right at the very end. Not to mention that the ending is terrible as well. So overall narrative is terrible in this movie. But other than narrative, animation and character development is pure! Tho I expected animations to be better cuz some parts seem rushed and outdated like vfx and all animation scenes have a ton of stuttering that truly breaks the immersion, so its time to switch animation engine especially with the promisingly beautiful and rich UE5 that can truly change movies imo as we have seen so far from indie and major creators. But the movie is still truly fun to watch especially in a good theater, and Audio direction and sound design is next level! Overall, if you have a good home theater I highly recommend you wait to watch it on disney plus or rent it. For the fans that have finished school and life lessons and waited from childhood to see this sequel, you would be disappointed. Expand

Avatar: the way of water
This sequel continues in the same traditions as the first movie. It's a visually stunning piece of art with a message that's not properly explored.

With otherworldly visuals, Avatar 2 takes audiences into never explored lands in Pandora. The runtime of the movie is long, not unbearably long though as the visual treat is mesmerising enough to ground a viewer; it's ironic that with the lengthy runtime, avatar 2 still feels rushed. The story is thin and the dialogue is poor (the constant use of 'Bro' from the young actors was cringe worthy, and gives off a poor image of what old people think young people sound like); Avatar 2 is heavily centred on family, but even this isn't portrayed properly. Various subplots are raised and tossed carelessly, while the main plot is also rushed through just to get to the big finish. The characters aren't well fleshed or developed properly; some characters are borderline unnecessary.

The action scenes are grand and well choreographed, and the final act is heavily influenced by Titanic (a movie also made by James Cameron).

In all, Avatar 2 is a visual spectacle with a relatively thin plot that lacks poignancy.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is the type of movies that made you think about what should be a movie for you.
Are you a viewer who is looking for sense, a scenario that justifies the price and time ? Do you search beauty and reflection through various plots and so try to have empathy for characters ?
Or are you rather a spectator that needs to see beauty through (special) effects, choregraphies, lighting and scenes ? Because if you belong to the second category, 'Avatar: The Way of Water' will be amazing for you. If you manage to remain seated through its huge 192-minute running time.
For this occasion they force us to watch it in 3D, thing I never did since Avatar the first came out. Back then it was awful and suffering from major headaches after that was common. Here it seems soften, more nuanced. To the point where you wonder if it really is in 3D since most of the scenes are shot from far enough. You won't have to squint to see what's going on under your nose.

Shall we start with the feature ? The lighting is correct, although it is often directed at us, making some scenes uncomfortable to watch. The colours are terrific, too bad the characters spend half of the movie in the water, which makes blue on blue... Soundtrack is okay even if quite generic. Face animation and capture are tremendous and allow an impressive palette of emotions. The pace is quite bad : there is a war going on and they find time to fool around with beasts, doesn't matter how important they are. As in the first movie, the universe is terrific, colourful, amazing and full oddities. Characters are inequal : some are truly boring (as the leading of Jake Sully), some get a noticeable and enjoyable evolution. I can't deny some major lack of explanations about them from time to time but I hope things will be solved and revealed in the next movies. Can't deny the effort on technic here. But it can't be everything.

The main dark point is the scenario : it is inconsistent, predictable, easy, mediocre, full of deus ex machina's and uninteresting sub-plots. Are really political decisions based on the behaviours of some disruptive kids ? Is sacrifice a dumb and easy thing to be made ? How many General Frances Ardmore are there ? So many questions to remain unanswered. Well they highlight the fact that Cameron knew that taking advantage of the hype was all about it. And sadly it worked.

The storyline of this second version of Avatar was basically almost exactly the same as the first movie 13 years ago. It even seemed that it didn't know which direction it wanted to go and just mashed up different events and ideas randomly together into a 3 hour movie, which eventually left you with an unsatisfying feeling. The 3D effect is however yet again top notch, you feel as if the characters were real and alive on screen, however I am afraid that the 3D gimmick has worn out over time, that 3D alone wont contribute significantly enough anymore to make a film watchable. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What can i say? It's all about the CGI. 13 years in the making and still they can't come up with an original story. Just the same "skypeople's vs. avatars" war story. A one hour story told by a 3 hour movie. Only the nature scenes were worth watching, that's it. Enough said. If you need to go sci fi and upload the original bad guy's memory into an Avatar for a revenge movie, your writers are really lazy. Next movie they'll probably use him again, because his "son" saved him..really? Expand

It really did make me feel like a kid again, with a story that has both stakes and the visuals to back it up. My 90 year old grandparents, who never go to see movies, went and saw this and loved it, and this movie is almost 200 minutes long. The world building is also really well done, an underrated ability is to be able to completely flesh out an entire universe, make it feel big, real and lived in, with no written source material to lean back on. This franchise feels on par with Harry Potter, Marvel, The Lord of the Rings, and it is something that I am truly grateful of, especially with the state of cinema post pandemic. 13 years? The writers must have spent all their time shoving bananas in each others **** as opposed to actually writing a decent script that didn't have some sort of contrivance or invented conflict every twenty minutes. Listen, why are all13 years? The writers must have spent all their time shoving bananas in each others **** as opposed to actually writing a decent script that didn't have some sort of contrivance or invented conflict every twenty minutes. Listen, why are all you important plot characters in a sequence that will incite an action scene or create some sort of drama or invite some kind of conflict every chance you get? Why won't you just listen to the other main characters? Oh right, because this is a self-indulgent pet project born out of James Cameron's enormous ego and insipid usage of the exact same plot mechanics in every film he's ever made. The narrative being a completely unintelligible mess is I suppose also the best Cameron can do with all the money and computer graphics in the world. So much for that then.

What troubles me about Avatar 2, is that this is where large productions are going. These goofy stupid cartoon characters jumping around with explosions with no real emotional core or elements that make them relatable in any way. Its the equivalent of Wily coyote catching the roadrunnner, but all of a sudden the roadrunner pulls out a photo of his roadrunner wife, his roadrunner kids, his roadrunner investment portfolio, retirement plan and his 401k. As if we as the audience are supposed to suddenly sympathize with this caricature of a bird that happens to run too fast for its intended predator- which is the whole joke by the way. Here, the joke is the scenes where the writers have written themselves into a corner and have no idea how to create real, moving, raw emotion with their dumb looking 12 feet tall blue cat people that chatter, hoot, holler and screech like a pack of very social Bonobo monkeys. They also stick their tongues out, which I found hilariously insulting to actual indigenous people. It was like watching Disney's Pocahontas, in fact the Water chief guy kind of looked like Pocahontas's DAD to be honest. I certainly laughed and threw my arms up a lot while watching this. Its whiny, its preachy, its all recycled crap from the first movie. Everyone strangely disappears during the final fight for some reason, then all of the characters that we have had barely any time to actually get to know have a big group hug and solve all their problems. Wow. Amazing. No kissing? No embracing? No romance? Just the equivalent of pre-teens giving one another googily eyes from across the room? Are you kidding me with this Barny the magic dinosaur garbage they are presenting as some sort of action packed romp that will change your life baloney? This should've been called, Avatar 2, The way we got their wallets again.

The acting is difficult to judge since you got CGI for a face. All the performances looked fines to me. The movies becomes very long around the end, because it's one action sequence after another, you get very little pauses. The action are really good however. They just put too much of them in successions. The music was fair. Sounds effects are incredible, just like for the first. I give the movie 75%. Great movie but too long with problems of balance. The CGI work was gorgeous and allowed for a beautiful exploration of an alien world. Many of the new characters are intriguing and help the audience see a different perspective than what we have seen previously. The story overall feels a bit too similar which feels disappointing given the amount of time they took to release this film. Some of the choices with the main story and character actions are confusing or goofy. This took me out of the experience as many times throughout the film others would laugh at what should be serious scenes. That being said I looked past most of the few criticisms I have because many of them can be explained or improved with further development of the story. Avatar makes for a visual feast birthed in the nostalgic 3d era. Its visuals are amazing to dive in to and your mind swims through the underwater world created by Mr. Cameron. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As the first work was insanely good, I think that the second work, this work, had a little bad story.

It's bad that I can't empathize with family stories at all. Maybe I'll come to understand when I have a child and become a parent, but for me now, is it possible for me to be such a strong motivation for my child or family ties? I can only question.

The images were very beautiful, the 3D did not feel out of place at all, and above all, the HFR (high frame rate) images were too amazing.
Involuntarily, I took off my 3D glasses and rubbed my eyes.
"Wow! This is amazing! It moves too smoothly..."

Please watch it at an HFR compatible movie theater (IMAX, Dolby Cinema, etc.).

Being aI mean, it's hard to rate this movie because I have mixed feelings about it. It's beautiful and gorgeous when it comes to the mocap and graphics, but fails when it comes to the story and characters that are presented in this movie. Being a huge Avatar fan with my family, we had a lot of expectations for those 13 years, and after seeing the movie, we were all a bit happy and disappointed (again, mixed feelings).

The story feels a bit generic and recycled. It's the same old "humans bad and greedy while poor aliens are innocent and nice", and it seems like James Cameron sorta lost his touch. There are also many plot holes and errors in the story that make you wonder if some of it was even proof read by someone.

Graphically wise, this is by far the best looking movie that I have ever seen so far in my life! The way how the models were textured and simulated with the wild life (cgi) blows your mind away wondering how they even pulled it off.

At the end of the day, Avatar 2 is more of a "eye candy" graphical showcase than a good story. While Avatar 1 presented many cool ideas and concepts about Pandora, Avatar 2 just feels like it recycled all its creatures and natives into a "but what if they were underwater?". Do I recommend this movie? Sure, I guess. Def a good movie to go watching with friends or family and have a fun time, but as an Avatar fan, I think I am starting to lose hope for this movie series, and that worries me...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Y’all are out of your damned minds. The most intense and beautiful movie experience of my life. The story is deeply moving and profound, it’s incredible BRO! I know it’s cool to hate on Avatar, and if you don’t get it I understand, it’s actually a little highbrow now. The movie is amazing; I’ve seen it twice in 3D and it’s honestly the most jaw-dropping and incredible spectacle I’ve seen with my eyes. I could go on but I don’t feel like it; the people who know already know, the people who don’t are missing out on a CORE MEMORY. It’s funny, I used to think Infinity War/Endgame was the cream of the crop. Those are just silly **** movies, yet people will say they are better. I love them but they’re fools, the lot. This is the most awesome movie I’ve ever seen and I will be seeing it at least once more, thank you very much. I see you James Cameron. I’ll be here for your journey. Expand

An absolute masterpiece and unbelievable achievement, both visually and story-wise. A must see in the theatre. I did not notice the length of the film. I never rate movies or tv with a 10 but this movie clearly deserves a 10.

I think that's the target demographic. I found it a OK popcorn flick with an expanded cast, with a lot of the focus on the children of the protagonist of the previous film. True to its name the plot is very water focused. But can basically be distilled down to "Whaling bad." Characters and plot elements are simplistic, and the CG and invented alien biome is largely expected to cover for that. Similarly a cast of A list talent largely vanishes into the blue creatures that inhabit this world. Edie Falco does a stand out job in a minor role. Other than that it feels like a midquel. Doesn't start much, doesn't resolve much. Its long enough and slow enough younger kids do (and did in my theater) get bored. Since it was the big theater film of a weak xmas season, it made lots of money. If you're reading this because you're considering viewing it before the inevitable sequel, I can save you 3 hrs and suggest you'll be fine with a one page summary. Expand

I watched it in high frame rate 3D, and thought it was fantastic. I don't know that I want any other movie presented this way, but I think it was a perfect choice here. I felt that the original "Avatar" did a better job of establishing an emotional connection between the characters, but this one gives the audience so many awe inspiring scenes where you can soak up the beauty of the world. Cameron shows he is still in a class all to himself, and I can't wait for more. Expand
