The villain is unfortunately not convincing and some choreography accelerate especially in the market. The Power woman is too pronounced and lacks power when you see how Godzilla deals with the subject of the woman is a shame to see this Aladdin in pain.

The part I was not looking forward to: Genie was surprisingly the best part of the film. I mean, I was not looking forward to Jafar either but that proved to be spot on gut feeling. The main actor and actress are kind of bland and their acting does give off great chemistry like the original characters had. Will Smith steals the show very often and with what else is on display, you will be glad that he did. The musical numbers are fantastic and incredibly energetic. I personally left the film a little sour due to some questionable changes and character motivations. Another Disney classic hit my the mediocre Live Action bug that Disney has become obsessed with. Aladdin (2019): While the first half is just a shot-for-shot recreation of the original, and it fails to create any sort of chemistry between the two leads, it still is mildly entertaining, and the cinematography is surprisingly great. But,Aladdin (2019): While the first half is just a shot-for-shot recreation of the original, and it fails to create any sort of chemistry between the two leads, it still is mildly entertaining, and the cinematography is surprisingly great. But, the second half is where this movie takes a full dive into stupidity: it becomes a cliched mess, the pacing becomes extremely inconsistent, the cinematography becomes bland, the dance choreography is generic, and it "overstays it's welcome" pretty hard. However, there were some surprises: Will Smith, Naomi Scott, and Marwan Kenzari who play the Genie, Jasmin, and Jafar respectively, actually bring great performances. Expand

Exageradamente musical.

Expand

I'll do tons of comparisons to the animated movie because it deserves to be compared, this isn't an adaptation, this movie is really trying to be the same movie as the animated one. It seemed that Disney didn't care in getting talented people to make this movie as good or better than the original, the direction is bland with no style, the cinematography is mediocre, this movie looked like an ad for some Aladdin Disneyland ride. Some CGI looked bad and hilarious, cheesy slow-motion in 2019, new characters and songs added were unnecessary, many of the characters lost their charisma and don't feel the same anymore compared to the animated version, the acting was cartoonish and the genie and Abu looked hilariously awful. Speaking about Abu, there's one reason why Disney's take on Aladdin SHOULD be ANIMATED: The animal characters of the original have no charisma or emotion in this movie because they CAN'T EMOTE! They're realistic animals! However I do liked some stuff. The acting is cartoonish and cheesy, making it bad for me but Will Smith as the Genie was actually good and pretty funny, mainly because his character is meant to be cartoonish, I thought Will Smith would play Will Smith but his performance was actually good #ForgiveMeWill. Some new comedy scenes were really funny and the best of the movie. That's about it for the good stuff.

Disney, please stop remaking your animated movies in live-action, I would've loved to see this movie remade but CGI ANIMATED! It would be cool to see classic Disney movies remade in 3D animation with the technology you now have! Making them live-action just takes away a lot of the "Magic" these movies had, like a vibrant color palette, exagerated movements and expressions, geniunely breathtaking visual effects, etc...

Erm ye were to start the main actor seemed a little wooden in the roll of Aladdin, will smith did an ok job as the genie, but no one can fill the shoes of the original voice actor of the cartoon sorry.
overall fun for the kids but average at best.

Está más o menos, la verdad no sé por qué Disney sigue y sigue haciendo Live Action de películas viejitas, deberían empezar a hacer algo nuevo, así como PIXAR ya la última secuela que va a hacer es Toy Story 4.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you have never seen Aladdin and like CGI more then animation go right ahead.
If you think that it will improve on the old 1992 movie then I would say that you should not watch it.
SPOILERS:
- jasmine has been made more scared. Not sure why they did this but in the old movie she wasn't scared to jump to other roofs and now she is.
- Iago's personality is gone. Did you like that he got angry and his revenge on the sultan at the end? NO MORE. now he is just a bird that knows that Aladdin the diamond in the rough how? I don't know.
- carpet knows about the lamp.(didn't need to be added) Aladin also cleans the lamp like he knows something will come out of it(maybe that is just me).
- Aladdin first wish doesn't count(the rules are you rub the lamp you say I wish and that's that) now because Aladdin didn't rub the lamp a sec before he said I wish they didn't count it while to spawn the genie he had to rub the lamp so that would mean that part 1 is already complete. When he can't wish because he is underwater he gets to sign a paper that declares that he made a wish not sure why they think it was necessary.
- Aladdin is really awkward when he has to introduce himself to the sultan/Jasmin. Not sure why they did that. he even said that he was really good at pretending("If you don't have anything you have to pretend like you own everything") - The genie even when Jafar is the master just teleports the carpet if he can do that why not teleport the lamp to Aladdin's hand??
- When Jafar's staff gets broken the second time with help from the sultan the spell that Jafar cast on Iago disappears. Not sure why this happens because Aladdin didn't transform back in a prince at the same time while that was also Jafar's magic doing.
- While flying against Iago Aladdin gets hold of the lamp. Not sure why he didn't wish for Jafar's wishes to be undone but that would have made the movie shorter.
- Jafar's last wish: "For my final wish I wish to become the most powerful being in the universe more powerful than you"(you references to the genie) but he just ends up like the genie. not sure what made him more powerful.
- When Aladdin wishes the genie free he becomes a human. Why did this need changing? Why not just leave him as a ghost? Now it seems more like he was under a spell just like Jafar is now.
-I didn't really talk a lot about the extra sub-characters: Dolia(maiden of the princes) and Haki(the commander) they were both ok but were not really necessary. I would rather have seen a fight between Aladdin and Jafar like in the old movie but not it was pretty short in that part (Iago and Aladdin were fighting for some time for the lamp).
- Last but least I wanted to overlook it but some else also talked about it: Jasmin becomes the sultan. felt more cramped in and just there to please the feminists. It's not a worse ending than the original but it also doesn't really make it better. Now instead of Aladdin becoming sultan while he is not a real prince, Jasmin will become the sultan.
What I liked:
- The music, it was the original but then was changed to be more modern(beatbox was added etc.) and there were even some original songs added.
What I think they should have changed:
- when Aladdin almost gets out of the cave of wonders Jafar could just help him to get outside the cave. Then would Jafar have the lamp and could just give Aladdin some money for his troubles. If you ask why would Jafar not just let him dye in the cave? Because Aladdin isn't a thread to Jafar at first. He is just a thief that wants some money. Jafar had nothing to fear.
Something to think about:
At the start, he tells Aladdin that gold and power are not good whiches maybe that was something that the genie experienced for himself? (he also throws away Jafar's lamp just like in the old movie to the gave of wonders and says that a couple of thousand years will cool him off).

I was expecting to hate Will Smith's Genie but, surprisingly, he was one of the few high points of the film. He made Genie his own and didn't just try to clone Robin Williams and the role was all the better for it. Everything else, though.. just awful. Adding Jasmine's new, feminist pandering "I don't need no man, I'm a strong woman!", musical numbers ("Speechless" parts 1 and 2) not only felt out of place but also were cringe af. Nothing felt menacing about Jafar -- he felt like a SyFy b-rated TV movie villain. The visual effects were pretty damn good, at least. But I give the final word to my 8 year old who, as we were walking out of the theater, turned and said "That stunk, can I watch the cartoon when I get home?" Expand

It’s like an addition, Beauty and the Beast was fine but it was still just a shot for shot remake, Dumbo was not fine and it was somehow worse than a shot for shot remake and now the Disney remake parade continues with yet another classic Aladdin. Remaking a movie into live action almost shot for shot, what is the point? I mean I know its Disney and it’s for kids and all that jazz but honestly is it too much to ask for something a little less PG. What has it added? Nothing, sure it looks pretty, the costumes and the set pieces are fantastic but it’s not better, it’s nowhere near better. Re-release the original animation for the kiddies and remake something a little different for everyone else and not just a bunch of fluff. Aladdin 2019 is painful, specifically the singing, the singing is a cringe inducing auto-tuned, failed attempt to recreate something magical.

I’m just going to go ahead and presume you’ve all seen the original animated version, it’s the same story again only more dragged out. The lovable street rat Aladdin (Mena Massoud) finds a magic lamp containing a Genie (Will Smith) and cue wishes, songs and a magic carpet. Also featuring Jasmine (Naomi Scott) who not only has more lines but her own song too yey! And Jafar (Marwan Kenzari) who I’m sorry is so bland he manages to be upstaged by a CGI carpet. Aladdin should not have been remade, the result is bland and unnecessary. That isn’t just because of Robin Williams although that is a major part of it. Williams as the Genie is a universally loved performance, it’s iconic and it’s hilarious so Will Smith had some big shoes to fill. Is he terrible? No, he’s honestly the best thing about this remake. He put his own stamp on it and does his very best to add comedy as much as he can. It doesn’t always work but he’s trying his best. He certainly looks like he’s having a good time and I can’t really say that about anyone else.

There’s only one way to stop this laziness of Disney remaking their entire back catalogue because it must be too much trouble to pick up a book and make something original for a change. I’ve said this before but I’ll say it again if we stop seeing them they’ll stop making them yet Dumbo is still in the box office top ten and why should Aladdin be any different? I know a losing battle when I see one. Aladdin is going to dominate for the next few weeks because a film aimed at children and suitable for all ages will always make its money back and then some. Recommended for the die-hard Disney fans or anyone wanting to entertain their kids for a couple of hours for everyone else Aladdin is a definite skippable movie.

Smith earns the respect with vivacious performance and is celebrated by an incredible fund, yet Ritchie's distraction could only last long enough for a three minute song.

Aladdin

Ritchie is not using the best of it. What was highlighted in the 90s animated version, that is definitely celebrated with Disney funding the makers with a room full of money and vfx artists coloring and glittering the screen with crowd pleasing fireworks and commercial artwork. What is ignored is the goofiness of the Sultan- the father of Jasmine played by Naomi Scott- and the devilishness of the antagonist. But what aches you the most, is our host, the titled character, whose innocence should have been empathetic, yet in here, the incompetence is pitifully.. well, pitied.

Along with dull writing- except for the obvious one-liners from Genie played by Will Smith that will still chuckle you- the detailing in the physical sequence that went by in the original version is majorly in scarce here. Now, the plus points. First of all, it is and will be eventually a Guy Ritchie film. Ergo, it has got style like no other Disney live version had. From daring to add a musical number in a chase scene to a brilliantly choreographed songs; dance is a major part of it and Mena Massoud is good at it along with Smith tapping to few beats.

New songs are added up and the old ones are updated with couple of new verses, which to me was like eating glass. And yes, I should not compare it to Robin Williams, but in my defense, they sang those songs and brought it that close, and no it is not an improvement. Smith's version is surely charming but is also anchored by a dull script. Aladdin is another passion project for Smith coming alive and he will rejoice it, the unsung ones will be the supporting actors along with the banner that chips up for a pretentious gold digging act as it fails to experiment with the art in the museum, once again.

First Will Smith I am calling him Will Smith because that's what he is. He is as charismatic as usual but he is not playing a character he is playing himself. Aladdin is blend and lacks the personality of his cartoon counterpart, not a lot to say about this one. Jafar is miscast. He is not menacing or sleazy he is just there because someone had to be. Iago is waster. And Jasmine is no longer looking for true love she wants to be in charge. The song numbers are ok for what this movie is. In general the movie is a major let down. Aladdin is not the hero of his own story he is a side character. The movie is about Jasmine and her "rise to power". I say that because her motivations are changed to apparently reflect current year (2019). If they wanted to make a movie about her that's fine but why not go with a new take on it instead of changing the story. It worked for Maleficent why not do a movie called Jasmine and just run with it.
TLTR: If you are nostalgic for Aladdin just revisit the 1992 Disney classic.

'Aladdin', on the other hand, was the least interesting of the remakes so far, to me. There wasn't really anything new to this and that was one of the biggest drawbacks. Will Smith's Genie was okay but better than I thought he would be. Mena Massoud was decent, Naomi Scott was fine and Marwan Kenzari's Jafar reminded me of an angry 15-year-old. The beginning part of the film was okay but still fell flat in most areas. And the middle and end was either pretty quickly paced, or just paced so inconsistently. Some of Genie's jokes kept me somewhat entertained throughout the nearly two-hour runtime. I think the biggest complaint from me was the actual editing and how the setting looked. Not the practical set, because that was one of the best-looking sets I've seen, but the way they implanted the overly colored screen effect. If it was daytime, Agrabah and the desert just had this distracting shade of yellow and orange. If it was night, then Agrabah, the Cave of Wonders, and the desert had this annoying dark blue shade. Some CGI effects were okay, but it really all came down to the look and colors of the film. Costume design was fine, the production design was great, but I have no idea why Disney would spend all this money on amazing production design for a C- film. Overall, this film was exactly how I thought it would turn out for me. Expand

Another year, another Disney remake.

They aren’t always bad, but they aren’t always good either. I haven’t seen them all, but I’d say The Jungle Book is probably the gold standard here, recreating and re-imagining the 78-minute animated flick into a thoroughly enjoyable and inventive adventure. Cinderella (yes, that existed) was definitely a by-the-numbers remake, though Lily James’ charming performance elevated it to a must-see. And the rest fall in line. Beauty and the Beast added nothing (though it had some magic) and I haven’t seen the Tim Burton remakes Alice in Wonderland and Dumbo (sorry, kinda).

Now we have Aladdin, directed by Guy Ritchie, surely a strange choice to direct a remake whose original is bursting with color, music, and light-heartedness. Ritchie’s best known movies are the heist movie Snatch, the Robert Downey Jr. led Sherlock Holmes and its inferior sequel, and the famous box-office bomb King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. None of them have any color, and though I am a fan of Downy as Sherlock, none of them are especially good. So how does Aladdin fair?

Not well, unfortunately. It’s more or less the same as the 1992 version without what made it so good. The original was a tight-paced 91-minute movie with Robin Williams at the height of his comedic powers and great visual effects for its time. But here the movie is stretched to a poorly-paced 128 minutes, without Robin Williams, and the visual effects aren’t up to snuff. We’ve come so far with the computer graphic imaging technology that gives reason for these remakes (showcased perfectly in The Jungle Book), but it’s evidently too much to hope for in Aladdin. The CGI of Genie looks weird, the magic carpet ride during “A Whole New World” (that song still slaps) looks like someone did it on photoshop, and the look of Rajah does not compare to Shere Khan.

Will Smith tried really hard to be the OG Genie, while adding a little Fresh Prince flair, but it was too much of an imitation: Robin Williams is untouchable here, and it didn’t work for me. Mena Massoud’s Aladdin was plainly fine, but it’s Naomi Scott’s performance as Jasmine that was a standout. She was the most natural and organic, giving her own performance as opposed to going through the motions of 1992’s version. Her new song was laaaame, though. (Here’s a better showcase of her talents from back her in Disney Channel days). The movie did have good choreography, and at least there is a lot of color, so props to Ritchie for going against type. After that though, the desert well runs dry.

I know I’m being harsh, but Aladdin is my favorite Disney movie, and I’ve seen it eleventy-six times. But some movies perhaps shouldn’t be remade, especially if they work better animated. Disney has obviously tapped into the zeitgeist of nostalgia and is printing money now. But it’s because we love these old movies, not because they are releasing something special now. Indeed, 2019’s Aladdin is void of magic, originality, and a good reason to exist. 2/5

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Good cityscapes and extra design, costume design was excellent, but the dialogue, songs and casting are all terrible. Aladdin lacks the charm of his cartoon counterpart and the sultan is nothing like his adorable, bouncy, happy cartoon counterpart. Even jafar comes off weak rather than diabolically charming. Iago is pointless and abu is actually ugly and offputting compared to cute.

The only decent thing about this movie was the graphics and cinematography.

I wouldn't see it for money. Maybe if i were bored waiting in a doctor's office.

Also, they took liberties with the story. In the cartoon, Jasmine just wants to be free and travel the world. Here she wants to be sultan. Thanks SJW forced narrative.

Will Smith helps but only a little.. His performance is still super cringy.

In every possible way the cartoon is superior.

It remains one of the stand-out turns in a career that had more true magic than anything the genie in this tragic and pointless waste of effort can even pretend to muster. At times, it seems that the only point for this film is to "update" the storytelling for our postmodernist times, which while meaning well, does more harm than good. Hollywood needs to accept that while some of its classic films may not match up to our culture's current counterbalancing efforts in terms of social justice and cultural sensitivity, their value as art often outweighs what are seen as anachronistic flaws. Sometimes, it's better to leave well enough alone. Expand

Aladdin has one of the best stories so how could they mess this up... Well to start off, the actors, all of them, including Will Smith, absolutely suck. It was a very cringe-y movie. Guy Ritchie was a terrible choice for director. It had this weird fast forwarding and slow motion mixed into it. Oh and to make it worse Disney has to roll out the feminism agenda by making the women smart and wise and the prince courting Jasmine, an absolute moron. I figured they’d go the cocky arrogant route but no let’s make him stupid. Oh and they made him white with some terrible German accent because Allah forbid they make someone of color look dumb. This next bit is a tiny spoiler but not really. Jasmine wants to be Sultan. Ok cool. Women in Saudi Arabia just got the right to drive a car. That’s pushing it a little. Overall the original is much more charming and told the story better in less time. Expand

Movie was atrocious in terms of comedy or tension and had uneven production value.

I haven't laughed once (maybe smiled a few times thanks to Iago, Abu and Carpet) neither cared for any of the characters.

Will Smith jumping around as a disappointing Genie in a very questionable CGI blue form so jarring to the eye mumbling cringey nonsense for 5 year olds
The "Friend like me" scene felt like it was missing the grandeur and excitement of the original. Aladdin and Jasmine bursting into song seemed kinda forced but at least the songs themselves were nice renditions of the originals.

Jaffar's pathetic voice and actions made me roll my eyes several time.

Hakim and Sultan were quite boring (they looked like they came out of a cheesy Turkish soap opera) serving as dull pawns in Jaffar's mind games.

It tells a lot on the level of your writing, when your best characters are the non-human ones.

Finale was anti climatic and even more cringey.

To be honest, I watched this movie because my family wanted me to join them, but I should've trusted my gut about this and just waited to Lion King (I trust Favreau a lot more than Ritchie).

Let’s just say with out Will Smith and the dance scenes, I would have given this movie a 1. Over all disappointed, Disney could have done so much better with their budget

What killed it for me was the acting, fell super flat. Let’s talk about the cast:
1.Worst was Jafar= buzz kill, poor acting and dint look the part. Awful over all, his voice and facial gestures were not mean at all, actors voice is rather soft.
2. Sultan= Hollywood has to stop casting Persians as Arabs, their accent is different. Sultan is played by a Persian actor with Persian accent, but Sultan is not from Persia! Why not hire English actors that can do the Arab English accent. 3. Dalia, wasn’t funny, didn’t believe her acting. Was just an unnecessary filler. 4. Aladdin= looked identical to the cartoon for me, but acting was bad. Flat. Just not believable. They needed to work on his acting skills

And the ending was poor and they got lazy, what happened to Jafar turning into a Cobra??? With all that budget why did they cut out this important scene? Disney shoved the Female power thing down our throats again at end...so unnecessary.

I gave it a 3 since Will Smith was the highlight of the movie. If you are a child or teenager, you may enjoy the movie.

They should have left this class alone, Hollywood instantly is trying to re do classics and make it social correct to match the current state of politics, it doesn’t work. Unnecessary and forced. I’m sick of it

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Not a good live action movie step ahead lyrics didnt match the scene like how the cartoon version did. he was literally walking around singing instead of running for his life. Jafar ruin the movie. no slave jasmine but we get a SFW jasmine song and she becomes sultan.... movie is called Aladdin not "Jasmine" cgi for carpet looks pretty bad i was hoping to see carpet mess with abu and thats how they meet but instead carpet ask for help and Aladdin was like "its a magic carpet." or something like that and they help carpet we don't get snake jafar instead a giant bird.. this movie doesn't improve the original. some of dialogue looked looked lifeless like they reading a script next to the camera man. will smith saved this movie for me. the actor that plays aladdin was ok his looks made him look like Aladdin same with the actress that plays jasmine. there is no slave jasmine scene or jester sultan getting crackers shoved in his mouth. instead sultan is almost made to snap his own neck which was kinda weird since this was supposed to be a children friendly movie but sultan looks possess and turning his head like it was about to snap and die. that went dark. should had slave jasmine instead but that would ruin her SJW song.. lol movie is not good. and they had a amazing Hitch scene with genie and aladdin which imo best part of the movie. As happy as it would make me to join the bandwagon of contrarian **** for this one, I’m mostly fine with thinking about this movie as one of the purer but boring incarnations of Disney’s plan to soak nostalgic 90s children.

The update trips over itself to give Jasmine, Genie, and Jasmine’s handmaid Dalia, played by the wonderfully straight-faced Nasim Pedrad, fuller internal lives and agency. Some of that is welcome, like the side story between Dalia and Genie, which works a lot better than it ever could have with the otherwise superior Robin Williams at the helm. Will Smith can pull off the flirty, dashing, smoothness necessary to woo in a way that would not have played as convincingly with Robin’s more brittle, nervous energy. Aladdin and Jasmine are aged up: the actors are 26 and 27 rather than the teenagers of the animated version of the story, which solves some borderline behavior on Jafar’s part. But other things, like Jasmine’s song, feel empty of feeling and out of place with the rest of the film, probably because they were not meant for the film, but rather for play on the radio and Disney channel. There’s nothing wrong with including new music. (Wife has a note about the impressive quality of Mena Massoud and Naomi Scott’s singing and how the movie would’ve been much improved if the producers had allowed Will Smith to lip sync some of his more vocally challenging songs, rather than the Lin-Manuel Miranda-type sing-talking that he does.)

Jasmine herself is spared the indignities of inconsistently effective hypnotism, which apparently necessitates a chase scene by a parrot-dragon instead. In the end, she’s still placed in suspended animation for the big confrontation scene which makes me wonder what Anita Sarkeesian would say about the effectiveness of this update: Feminist Frequency’s Damsel in Distress series.

Wife describes this film as “completely unnecessary,” made the same attempts to update and address feminist critique to the story as they did in Beauty and the Beast, such as explaining the mother’s disappearance, since so many people have made fun of Disney for the “missing mother” problem. Wife likes, for instance, the way that Jasmine is included in the opening song, “One Jump Ahead,” rather than it only featuring Aladdin. But she says the new Jasmine song was not a worthy addition to Menken’s soundtrack. The dancing was one of the few aspects of the film that distinguished it from the original (something I agree with–dancing and singing are not points of spectacle in an animated feature, but live-action can hang its hat on the actor’s physicality).

One of Wife’s points of mild annoyance is Genie’s inconsistent power levels. Sometimes it seems like he has a lot of leeway, like when he magics an entire entourage of performers to accompany Prince Ali to Agrabah, yet he’s unable to make Aladdin a prince from a real place, or to make a fake place real for the purposes of a wish. This is especially important when Jafar makes his wish to be sultan, but Genie isn’t able (or maybe willing?) to make the court and court guards obey him. The wish is almost too-quickly overcome by a simple monologue by Jasmine, simperingly (my word) extolling the virtues of her father’s beneficent hereditary monarchy over the evils of another hereditary monarchy. Overall, she says, it was just OK, an entertaining way to spend two hours, but it doesn’t have the charm and fuzzies of the original, which is a shame.

Lindsay Ellis has an amazing video essay on the impact of Robin Williams on celebrity-driven animated movies in the 90s through the present day.

In the original opera Jafar turned into a giant snake, trapped Jasmine in a hourglass to suffocate her and blew fire, laughing in pure evil...almost invincible.
In the live action he beat the staff...and teleport things...so freakin pathetic.

They bank too heavily on nostalgia which I don’t like. I feel that this movie should not have been made. I feel the same way about any Live Action remake that has been released or is coming out. Here are some positives. Most of the cast does a good job. Will Smith isn’t trying to beat out Robin Williams as the Genie but still does a great job. The soundtrack is decent. It’s still incredibly catchy but not as catchy as the original. The only song I feel that is better in this movie is Arabian Nights. All the other songs are good but not as outstanding as the original. Unfortunately, the negatives outweigh the positives. The pacing of this film is way off. It feels rushed at certain points and the end of the film starts to drag and it takes too long. It also doesn’t help that this film is 38 minutes longer than the original. Marwan Kenzari is a decent actor but he didn’t do a good job in this film. In my opinion, he didn’t know what to do with the character. Jafar never felt like a major threat during the film which is a problem because he is the main villain. There were some changes that were made to the story but I felt they really didn’t work for me. Jasmine’s added character arc was a big meh for me. It felt a little out of place within the narrative. The new songs they added were meh for me. They aren’t as memorable as the other songs in the film. The effects on the Genie are still as bad as they were in the trailer which was very distracting. The film is very brightly lit which makes it feel like a Disney Channel Original Film. There are also some slow motion scenes that come out of nowhere and make no sense at all. Overall, Aladdin may have a half decent score but fails to capture the magic of the original film. I give Aladdin a 2/10. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Generaly I like the story of Alladin and is amazing in the book, but aparently I sow only the Disney version wich is not the real story. First : the movie is 40% a musical wich is a minus from the start, then the story is wrong in all aspects. The real story hapens in China not Arabia, Jafar is an african powerfull wizard has nothing in common with the Sultan,in the real story is a great magician who finds out about the lamp from his magic stuff, and he finds Alladin and tricks him, the real story is more amasing than this "good" story,Jafar colects magic relics it does not want to became Sultan, Alladin actualy has a diferent story with Jasmin. The book is more acurate, the actors are playing amazing the roles on screen, Will Smith is amazing. But no fault of the actors if the writers wants to change 90% of the real story of Alladin, plus Alladin story is one of the amazing stories of 1001 nights, I will chose the story of tricky Dalila anytime over Alladins.Another issue with the so called story of the movie is the conception that the gin can only grants you three wishes, in the book the one who owns the lamp is the master of the gin wich can grant him what ever wish he wants and as many wishes he wants, the logic in the movie fades, what you gona do with a lamp with a powerfull gin who can only grants you three wishes, whould you give away your lamp to another for another three wishes?Realy illogical that the master of the lamp only have a limited amount of wishes!Another problem in the movie who changed completely the story of Alladin is that the chance to release the gin, again the ilogical used here is that the gin can be released and transform in human. The story with the gin is that God created the angels the gin and the human, this are three species diferent, the gin is said to be created from fire,so logical a species can not become another species and why would you will give up your powers to became less powerfull? In the real book, the gin is bound by king Solomon to the lamp, can not be release, probabily the only think that gin can't do in the story is to unbound itself even if the master will grant him that wish, the gin is bound with powerfull SIGILS,no one can broke them but king Solomon. The gin in the story is neutral who is controll him but the only one who can enter in the cave as a prophecy says is only Alladin, the lamp is writen to be his until he touches it,after that Alladin can give the lamp or lose it the lamp will work the same with the new master, but only Alladin can aquire it at first. Made up beings are : the monkey, the parot of Giafar and the tiger from the palace. Why would you made up this animals? No ideea.Probably to continue the old cartoons about Alladin.I wonder if this people who takes the story and recreate them they even bother anymore to read the original story. And many more details not in the movie but in the book, the book is worth reading if you like storys. This wouldn't be an issue, but of course this is a musical, so the lack of musicality kills it.

All of the actors look like they're just dialing in their performances.

At least this disaster of a movie got me to rewatch the original Aladdin, which was a really pleasant surprise by contrast, with emotive songs and great performances by the cartoon characters animators.

My conclusion is that Disney has no real quality control going on for it's projects, which is a shame given how much money went into the live action version.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A terrible script rewrite by someone that clearly did not understand nor respect the original. It's hard to list all the ways this movie failed. Whether it be how they completely rewrote a story that originally focused on love transcending status and wealth to to one that instead focuses more on female pursuit of power. Or how poorly the more cartoony characters like genie, Iago and Abu transitioned to live action. Or how they tried to randomly hip-hopify middle eastern culture. Or how abysmal their casting was for the villain. Or how they pointlessly created a tangential romance for the genie that contributes nothing to the story's themes, and comes at the cost of some of the best scenes like that of the merchant. Or how they would not even invest enough to recreate any of the scenes that would actually require a budget (like the giant cobra). I could go on and on but needless to say as a remake it's a disaster. If all you want is a distraction for your kids for 2 hours, it may do the trick but if you are expecting anything more, you're in for a colossal disappointment. Expand

If the average person of today got a magic lamp, odds are the fulfillments for each of their three wishes would be seen in the fantasy, Aladdin.

Wish #1: Rule by a king…

…beneath the Magic Kingdom. That’s right, a mouse king ruler who cares more about entertainment than moral direction of those beneath himself. What’s the problem with having such a king? He makes the public believe an attractive person without artistic talent has such a thing. Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine succumbs to that very curse as she gives some incredibly painful acting. Her forgetful new song, “Speechless,” adds nothing of narrative importance, proving a big fat fail in this cinematic product’s attempt at further expanding Cinderella’s castle into homes worldwide. The magic winds up absent all throughout, it’s not found in the single-shot-take that opens the feature by sweeping through a street, palace, and cave, and it’s especially not found in the “A Whole New World” number where Aladdin and Jasmine just sit and sing and go nowhere. There’s no magic because there’s no heat in any human conflict to suggest anyone there is even awake and alert.

Ironically most of the energy comes from cases of Will Smith’s rapping that is weirdly out of place even by Genie standards. This whole movie in fact feels like a package of 90’s nostalgia with all the original songs having the rock band remix treatment as if listening to Disney Mania 5. That package includes watching the actors standing awkwardly in moments that ironically are when Will Smith is his funniest… because everyone else is comparatively worse. The Lion King remake will most likely resort to similar artistic exterior to overshadow the interior. It’s honestly insulting to know that this film’s focus on looking pretty goes against the theme of Beauty and the Beast: beauty is found within. If somebody in the production crew lived by that, then this music video for nostalgic millennials would have remembered the satirical tongue-in-cheek humor the original animated feature wasn’t afraid to exploit.

Wish #2: No racism.

Even good desires, particularly money, can turn evil when it’s wanted for the wrong reasons. In this case, trying to fight hatred between two ethnicities could lead to forced political correctness that results in accidental racism. In this location of purely Arab people, one Caucasian is cast to play a Scottish man speaking with a horrible, HORRIBLE accent—the opposite of progressive. The whole cast in fact seems aware about their amplified stereotypes, Will Smith in particular clearly seems aware of the contradictory dialogue. One minute, he tells Aladdin to be genuine, then the very next, he encourages the opposite by making him dance against his will.

The treatment of gender is fatally flawed too, even a female-directed motion picture starring an almost completely male cast, The Hurt Locker, empowers women better than this does. Jasmine is way less brave than her animated counterpart; she won’t even jump across rooftops without a street rat’s help. It’s invigorating how these cultural stereotypes do more harm than good at Hollywood diversity, and director Guy Ritchie deserves a lot of the blame. He decides to exploit impressive screen spectacle with the Cave of Wonders and the “Friend Like Me” musical number, but because no tonal consistency is established, the cast never does anything besides let their hands dangle.

Wish #3: Inaccessibility to weapons.

You may think, “What family entertainment goes against its own violence prevention initiative?” Simple. Mena Massoud as Aladdin hurts your eyes to watch his survival of each laborious production day; he hurts your ears to hear him talk-sing while reading off a cue-card. Your tongue will hurt from tasting the bad dance choreography; your brain will hurt from the stupid adaptation mistakes (the “Prince Ali” number lyrics mention “White” Persian monkeys, yet the monkeys seen are NOT white). Afterward, you come home aching over the whole face, pain that will transfer into your soul.

The torture then continues when a dull end credits dance number finalizes that nobody there had fun at any point of production. Guy Ritchie’s vomit-colored peaceful efforts drops a bomb with a big “US” written on the side for Saudi Arabia. Then, when the bomb explodes on land, it makes their cities look just as ugly as Aladdin makes it all look. While that country is not a terrorist nation like the news think, it’s also not a mouse-guarded honeypot lamp free for kids to go rub.

Feels rushed. Does not take the time to set a story or build up any kind of mystique or feeling towards the storyline of Aladdin.

Instead it feels like a poorly written sitcom mixed with overproduced scenes with way too much focus on the cinemography and special effects instead of on making the original any kind of justice. Spare yourself the time and money and watch this at home for free in a couple of years when you are hungover with nothing to do, maybe then will it be somewhat worth the watch - if even then

Everything it does well was done better in the original and everything that the original did well is done much worse here! Now, when you think of the original Aladdin, what comes to mind? Probably the incredibly rich and colourful and energetic animation with great comedic timing and Robin Williams’ incredible performance as the Genie. Well, obviously this new movie isn’t animated so you don’t have any of that and Robin Williams is dead so you don’t have that either. Instead of the beautifully-crafted hand-drawn animation, you get very flat-looking and washed-out environments and some very crappy CGI. Instead of Robin Williams improvising most of his lines and talented Disney animators giving life to his words, you get Will Smith being slightly charming and slightly comedic, which is pretty much every Will Smith performance for the past 20+ years! Also, instead of Looney Tunes-style visual gags and slapstick, you get cringe humour. Not cringy humour, cringe humour, which is an actual style of comedy most often found in sitcoms like The Office. Cringe humour can be great if done well, but it can fail spectacularly if not done well. This was not done well. It wasn’t very funny. It was just awkward. What is even the point of watching this if the best parts of the original movie that arguably are the reason it is so beloved do not translate at all? Okay, so the comedy doesn’t work, but how are the other actors? Well, the rest of the performances were honestly pretty bad, especially the guy playing Jafar. He is not threatening in the slightest! He just sounds monotone and bored. He just wasn’t the right actor for the role. His facial features are too soft and his voice is too high-pitched. Not great villain material if not written correctly. The guy playing Aladdin just felt awkward, which kind of works sometimes for when he’s turned into a prince, but his performance still feels awkward even in the scenes where he’s supposed to be in his home element. He’s supposed to be kind of a Han Solo type, he’s a thief but he has a heart of gold, but in this he feels more like Scott Pilgrim. The girl playing Jasmine was probably the best actor in the movie, either her or Alan Tudyk as Iago, but in practically every scene she’s in without Aladdin she’s accompanied by her sidekick character. Not the tiger, a new character, her handmaiden. She was also very awkward and not very funny. I really don’t understand the point of this character being in the movie at all. Okay, so the performances leave a lot to be desired, but how is the music? Also terrible! The new orchestrations of the old songs are made more modern and hip for the kids (With some rapping and beatboxing. No, really.) and the only person who can sing in the whole darn cast is the girl who plays Jasmine! Speaking of Jasmine, she also has a new song of her own which she sings really well, but the lyrics are not very good and it seems very out of place with the rest of the songs. It doesn’t sound like Aladdin, it sounds more like The Greatest Showman. Probably because it was written by the same people who did The Greatest Showman. Now, I haven’t seen that movie, but I am not a fan of the songs from that film. They sound way too poppy and not enough like musical theatre for my liking and the lyrics I think are just awful, but at least all the songs were like that in The Greatest Showman. In Aladdin, it just does not fit at all. The effects during the song were cool though, or at least they would be if I didn’t see literally the exact same thing before in Into the Woods and Avengers: Infinity War. That’s most of this movie’s problems summed up. No matter what it does, there is always another movie that does it better. Overall, this movie is an embarrassment. It’s a complete and utter waste of time. It’s pointless! Just stay home and watch the original! It’s shorter (Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, the remake is over 2 hours long! The original is under 90 minutes! It’s full of padding. It even ends with a big dance party scene like a DreamWorks movie. And it shows Aladdin and Jasmine getting married! What the heck?? They aren’t supposed get married until the third movie, after a direct-to-VHS sequel and a TV series!) and it is better in every way! It’s colourful, energetic, hilarious and a ton of fun! This is boring, tired, unfunny and frustrating. Do not watch this movie! Stop supporting this lazy crap! The only reason I did was because this movie has already made over a billion dollars and there is nothing I can do to affect its financial performance at this point, and that's really sad that a movie this bad is so successful. This movie would be so beautiful if it wasn't feminist propaganda. The songs are wonderful, Will Smith as a gyn plays really good.

But if you can get passed that then you might enjoy this. There are good things to this movie like for example the songs are pretty good (not better then the original movie but still) the comedy well not being as good as the original is still great but I love how the added and changed things so it's not all the same but not so different so you could make this remake about anything eles.

Não sei como conseguiu ser pior que o original de 1992... acho q o politicamente correto consegue fazer essas coisas. Jafar bonitão é a parte mais nonsense do filme.

As a movie: Terrible cast, terrible acting, characters felt out of place, mediocre singing, and bad timing. Definitely a "B" movie.

As a remake: Some ties to the original but too many changes. Felt like a different story.

Disney should be ashamed.

Of course this movie had to end with the princess taking over the kingdom. Can't have a man ruling things now can we? ...and Disney pushed this at every turn.

This movie made me mad. From the awful CGI, to the terrible auto-tuned songs, to the bland and life-less re-hashing of the original, this movie is pointless! The fact that this made so much money is shameful!
