The best parts are all intact: wonderful songs with a modern arrangement, Bollywoodesque dance numbers, kid friendly themes, and big heart. The disappointing bits will likely not ruin it for adults and certainly will not bother your kids. Marwin Kenzari as Jafar is by far the most glaring problem with this film. Haters will obsess with Will Smith; however, you'll find his interpretation of the genie to be refreshing and hilarious. "Friend Like Me" is just as catchy and the new "Speechless" is brave and inspiring. I cannot imagine a better Jasmine than Naomi Scott. She is truly the standout in this film. Mena Moussad...well, he gets the job done, and that's really what keeps this film from being great - too many "adequate" performances.

The premature criticism of the CGI genie probably took everyone's mind off the rest of the CGI creatures. Rajah is spectacular and believable, the carpet will make you laugh, and Abu...Abu! He's the cutest thing you always imagined. Iago's role is vastly reduced in this reimagining, and that is a crime. But if that's a crime so is the voice performance of typically spot-on Alan Tudyk. I mean, WTF? I almost thought that parrot was a trained macaw until his dialogue. Really sad.

I'm not really sure if these films are targeted as nostalgia candy for adults or if they're supposed to have the same kind of appeal to older kids that the animated films have to children, but even though you'll walk out of Aladdin singing songs and smiling you will probably still be wondering if there's really a point to it. There's obviously nothing wrong with the original, and there's really nothing you can add to it. Except more box office...

Comparing this movie to the original animated version, I found that this new version does some things better than the original movie (Defining Jasmine's character more for exemple) and the original does other things better (I mostly prefer the climax from the original movie although the remake one is still good).

But all in all, it's still Aladdin and therefore it's still a great movie! Also have to mention that I enjoyed Will Smith's Genie, it's a different take but it works! Go see it! It's worth it!

The first act is quite slow and boring, even improbable when they are chasing Aladdin at the beginning, you do not believe the world they want to put you through the eyes and he's juggling and absurd jumps (I give it a 6), but then when the Genius appears the movie rises. Will Smith is the best of the film, Mena Massoud (Aladdin) also does his performance very well, you believe in everything, Naomi Scott (Jasmine) does her part. Those last 2 acts are great (I give it a 9). The scenes don't happen in the same order as the animated one, besides there are 38 more minutes of songs and new scenes. You don't feel that Guy Ritchie is the director, it could have been any other. This story is Arabic but they changed it and it feels a bit Indian, more of Bollywood. The ending just surprised me, it's not the same one when Aladdin sets the Genie free. You have to go watch it Noowww. Expand

Will Smith delivered as genie and the rest of the main cast did a pretty good job acting their characters. different from the original, I reckon this movie is not for everyone because some aspects of this movie has subtle differences compared to the original which some people might find weird and uninteresting. The vocal performances were great, it gives a modern spin to the classic and still manage to provoke a sense of nostalgia. The visuals are charming, maybe a bit too colorful for my liking, but it still works. A flawed yet still very fun movie to watch Expand

Some characters were remade and became more interesting to look on them on the screen. Relations between characters are progressing during the whole film. And, nonetheless, OST is amazing. Someone can not like it, but, all in all, it is great. I could stay speaking about good sides of Aladdin for a real long time, but, long story short, just go to it and judje it by yourself. It would be a better thing to do, and you will not just waste your time by wathcing it, I hope you will get that amount of positive emotions as I did. Expand

The pacing is so quick at times that key lines such as 'Do you trust me', get lost in the mix. The new song 'Speechless', though a great message, gets lost as it is inferior in its modernity. You also don't realize how strong the relationship with animals is in the animated feature until they are pushed over as second tier characters. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I enjoyed this movie quite a bit. Yes, it cannot compare to the original animated movie with Robin Williams but Will Smith brought a whole new dimension to the Genie which I really liked. The story was a little stupid, with Jasmine actually becoming Sultan (I am all for feminism but this is just going too far) and Jafar was nerfed to make Jasmine look "stronger". If you ignore the token social justice tripe, the movie was enjoyable and brings back a lovely nostalgia of the amazing music brought to us by the 1992 animated marvel that we all fell in love with. They bank too heavily on nostalgia which I don’t like. I feel that this movie should not have been made. I feel the same way about any Live Action remake that has been released or is coming out. Here are some positives. Most of the cast does a good job. Will Smith isn’t trying to beat out Robin Williams as the Genie but still does a great job. The soundtrack is decent. It’s still incredibly catchy but not as catchy as the original. The only song I feel that is better in this movie is Arabian Nights. All the other songs are good but not as outstanding as the original. Unfortunately, the negatives outweigh the positives. The pacing of this film is way off. It feels rushed at certain points and the end of the film starts to drag and it takes too long. It also doesn’t help that this film is 38 minutes longer than the original. Marwan Kenzari is a decent actor but he didn’t do a good job in this film. In my opinion, he didn’t know what to do with the character. Jafar never felt like a major threat during the film which is a problem because he is the main villain. There were some changes that were made to the story but I felt they really didn’t work for me. Jasmine’s added character arc was a big meh for me. It felt a little out of place within the narrative. The new songs they added were meh for me. They aren’t as memorable as the other songs in the film. The effects on the Genie are still as bad as they were in the trailer which was very distracting. The film is very brightly lit which makes it feel like a Disney Channel Original Film. There are also some slow motion scenes that come out of nowhere and make no sense at all. Overall, Aladdin may have a half decent score but fails to capture the magic of the original film. I give Aladdin a 2/10. Expand

This wouldn't be an issue, but of course this is a musical, so the lack of musicality kills it.

All of the actors look like they're just dialing in their performances.

At least this disaster of a movie got me to rewatch the original Aladdin, which was a really pleasant surprise by contrast, with emotive songs and great performances by the cartoon characters animators.

My conclusion is that Disney has no real quality control going on for it's projects, which is a shame given how much money went into the live action version.

Let’s just say with out Will Smith and the dance scenes, I would have given this movie a 1. Over all disappointed, Disney could have done so much better with their budget

What killed it for me was the acting, fell super flat. Let’s talk about the cast:
1.Worst was Jafar= buzz kill, poor acting and dint look the part. Awful over all, his voice and facial gestures were not mean at all, actors voice is rather soft.
2. Sultan= Hollywood has to stop casting Persians as Arabs, their accent is different. Sultan is played by a Persian actor with Persian accent, but Sultan is not from Persia! Why not hire English actors that can do the Arab English accent. 3. Dalia, wasn’t funny, didn’t believe her acting. Was just an unnecessary filler. 4. Aladdin= looked identical to the cartoon for me, but acting was bad. Flat. Just not believable. They needed to work on his acting skills

And the ending was poor and they got lazy, what happened to Jafar turning into a Cobra??? With all that budget why did they cut out this important scene? Disney shoved the Female power thing down our throats again at end...so unnecessary.

I gave it a 3 since Will Smith was the highlight of the movie. If you are a child or teenager, you may enjoy the movie.

They should have left this class alone, Hollywood instantly is trying to re do classics and make it social correct to match the current state of politics, it doesn’t work. Unnecessary and forced. I’m sick of it

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Movie Was pretty good. Most of the actors were fine and despite what i had feared Will Smith is an amazing genie and probably the best actor in the entire movie. it recreates jokes and creates new ones giving you a joy an old Disney was. while most of the new songs were a hit and miss it was a blast listening to recreations of the original songs. My only 2 complaints are 1). actor casted as Jafar. Not saying he's a bad actor but i believe he would would fit as any other character but personally he didn't feel like a Jafar. Jafar in the original is man known for his hypnotic charm as he lures you in, he was a man you wouldn't trust but at the same time you want to hear him out. The actor whole personality as Jafar was trying to be evil and massively lacked that hypnotic charm which makes a Jafar Character not Jafar at all. i'm sure the actor will star in a big role and be famous for that but any character would've been better than casting him has the serpent sorcerer we love. my second complaint is all the cultures they tried to serve on one main dish. This is Arabia not Punjabi, Desi, Persian, Egyptian, ect ect. It felt like they were trying to cater to a bunch of different cultures which ruined the cultural fun and made everything, including the dancing, feel very very stereotypical. i think the movie would've been more fun culturally if it focused on Arabian culture, some of Egyptian culture, And Some of India culture (i say this as Jasmines mother is an Indian Kingdom if you were to Google it) and would be a fun things people would learn about the culture as a whole. The cultural thing i point out however is because i am Islamic and i say this as it would be awesome for people to see true Arabian culture rather than the stereotypical culture most of the world sees in the south Asian, north east Africa it thinks of. Overall i did enjoy Aladdin other than the culture. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Good cityscapes and extra design, costume design was excellent, but the dialogue, songs and casting are all terrible. Aladdin lacks the charm of his cartoon counterpart and the sultan is nothing like his adorable, bouncy, happy cartoon counterpart. Even jafar comes off weak rather than diabolically charming. Iago is pointless and abu is actually ugly and offputting compared to cute.

The only decent thing about this movie was the graphics and cinematography.

I wouldn't see it for money. Maybe if i were bored waiting in a doctor's office.

Also, they took liberties with the story. In the cartoon, Jasmine just wants to be free and travel the world. Here she wants to be sultan. Thanks SJW forced narrative.

Will Smith helps but only a little.. His performance is still super cringy.

In every possible way the cartoon is superior.

Once again Disney proves that there is no point in remaking their classic movies. They always turn out worse! and this is no exception. The few changes that are made to make this version stand out against the original mostly all fall flat.

This movie made me mad. From the awful CGI, to the terrible auto-tuned songs, to the bland and life-less re-hashing of the original, this movie is pointless! The fact that this made so much money is shameful!

Some things are best left animated.

It lacks the energy and magic from the 1992 movie, which is strange to me because with Guy Ritchie directing I expected some chaos - just watch 'King Arthur: Legend of the Sword' or any other movie he directed. Also, Jafar sucks in this movie and it isn't Marwan Kenzari, just painfully miscast. The visual effects...yeah, lets not go there.

However, it is entertaining enough to sit through. Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine really makes the role her own, especially during the musical segments. Mena Massoud is fine as Aladdin, but at times I felt like he tried to duplicate the animated version a little bit too much.

Will Smith as the Genie is easily the best part of the movie. Despite not having a solid singing voice, but Smith's charm shines through and most importantly made the character his own. It's funny that the biggest complaint that everyone had turned out to be the best part of the movie, all because of an unfinished effect.

The difference between this and, say, this year's "Dumbo" for example, is the sheer amount of iconography to transcribe from animation to live-action in either film. But that's about it. Like "Dumbo," the new elements introduced here are either horrifically ideated or just flat-out dull. Yes, Will Smith is trying. Yes, the visuals are palatable. There's just simply not much else here. Expand

If the average person of today got a magic lamp, odds are the fulfillments for each of their three wishes would be seen in the fantasy, Aladdin.

Wish #1: Rule by a king…

…beneath the Magic Kingdom. That’s right, a mouse king ruler who cares more about entertainment than moral direction of those beneath himself. What’s the problem with having such a king? He makes the public believe an attractive person without artistic talent has such a thing. Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine succumbs to that very curse as she gives some incredibly painful acting. Her forgetful new song, “Speechless,” adds nothing of narrative importance, proving a big fat fail in this cinematic product’s attempt at further expanding Cinderella’s castle into homes worldwide. The magic winds up absent all throughout, it’s not found in the single-shot-take that opens the feature by sweeping through a street, palace, and cave, and it’s especially not found in the “A Whole New World” number where Aladdin and Jasmine just sit and sing and go nowhere. There’s no magic because there’s no heat in any human conflict to suggest anyone there is even awake and alert.

Ironically most of the energy comes from cases of Will Smith’s rapping that is weirdly out of place even by Genie standards. This whole movie in fact feels like a package of 90’s nostalgia with all the original songs having the rock band remix treatment as if listening to Disney Mania 5. That package includes watching the actors standing awkwardly in moments that ironically are when Will Smith is his funniest… because everyone else is comparatively worse. The Lion King remake will most likely resort to similar artistic exterior to overshadow the interior. It’s honestly insulting to know that this film’s focus on looking pretty goes against the theme of Beauty and the Beast: beauty is found within. If somebody in the production crew lived by that, then this music video for nostalgic millennials would have remembered the satirical tongue-in-cheek humor the original animated feature wasn’t afraid to exploit.

Wish #2: No racism.

Even good desires, particularly money, can turn evil when it’s wanted for the wrong reasons. In this case, trying to fight hatred between two ethnicities could lead to forced political correctness that results in accidental racism. In this location of purely Arab people, one Caucasian is cast to play a Scottish man speaking with a horrible, HORRIBLE accent—the opposite of progressive. The whole cast in fact seems aware about their amplified stereotypes, Will Smith in particular clearly seems aware of the contradictory dialogue. One minute, he tells Aladdin to be genuine, then the very next, he encourages the opposite by making him dance against his will.

The treatment of gender is fatally flawed too, even a female-directed motion picture starring an almost completely male cast, The Hurt Locker, empowers women better than this does. Jasmine is way less brave than her animated counterpart; she won’t even jump across rooftops without a street rat’s help. It’s invigorating how these cultural stereotypes do more harm than good at Hollywood diversity, and director Guy Ritchie deserves a lot of the blame. He decides to exploit impressive screen spectacle with the Cave of Wonders and the “Friend Like Me” musical number, but because no tonal consistency is established, the cast never does anything besides let their hands dangle.

Wish #3: Inaccessibility to weapons.

You may think, “What family entertainment goes against its own violence prevention initiative?” Simple. Mena Massoud as Aladdin hurts your eyes to watch his survival of each laborious production day; he hurts your ears to hear him talk-sing while reading off a cue-card. Your tongue will hurt from tasting the bad dance choreography; your brain will hurt from the stupid adaptation mistakes (the “Prince Ali” number lyrics mention “White” Persian monkeys, yet the monkeys seen are NOT white). Afterward, you come home aching over the whole face, pain that will transfer into your soul.

The torture then continues when a dull end credits dance number finalizes that nobody there had fun at any point of production. Guy Ritchie’s vomit-colored peaceful efforts drops a bomb with a big “US” written on the side for Saudi Arabia. Then, when the bomb explodes on land, it makes their cities look just as ugly as Aladdin makes it all look. While that country is not a terrorist nation like the news think, it’s also not a mouse-guarded honeypot lamp free for kids to go rub.

Everything it does well was done better in the original and everything that the original did well is done much worse here! Now, when you think of the original Aladdin, what comes to mind? Probably the incredibly rich and colourful and energetic animation with great comedic timing and Robin Williams’ incredible performance as the Genie. Well, obviously this new movie isn’t animated so you don’t have any of that and Robin Williams is dead so you don’t have that either. Instead of the beautifully-crafted hand-drawn animation, you get very flat-looking and washed-out environments and some very crappy CGI. Instead of Robin Williams improvising most of his lines and talented Disney animators giving life to his words, you get Will Smith being slightly charming and slightly comedic, which is pretty much every Will Smith performance for the past 20+ years! Also, instead of Looney Tunes-style visual gags and slapstick, you get cringe humour. Not cringy humour, cringe humour, which is an actual style of comedy most often found in sitcoms like The Office. Cringe humour can be great if done well, but it can fail spectacularly if not done well. This was not done well. It wasn’t very funny. It was just awkward. What is even the point of watching this if the best parts of the original movie that arguably are the reason it is so beloved do not translate at all? Okay, so the comedy doesn’t work, but how are the other actors? Well, the rest of the performances were honestly pretty bad, especially the guy playing Jafar. He is not threatening in the slightest! He just sounds monotone and bored. He just wasn’t the right actor for the role. His facial features are too soft and his voice is too high-pitched. Not great villain material if not written correctly. The guy playing Aladdin just felt awkward, which kind of works sometimes for when he’s turned into a prince, but his performance still feels awkward even in the scenes where he’s supposed to be in his home element. He’s supposed to be kind of a Han Solo type, he’s a thief but he has a heart of gold, but in this he feels more like Scott Pilgrim. The girl playing Jasmine was probably the best actor in the movie, either her or Alan Tudyk as Iago, but in practically every scene she’s in without Aladdin she’s accompanied by her sidekick character. Not the tiger, a new character, her handmaiden. She was also very awkward and not very funny. I really don’t understand the point of this character being in the movie at all. Okay, so the performances leave a lot to be desired, but how is the music? Also terrible! The new orchestrations of the old songs are made more modern and hip for the kids (With some rapping and beatboxing. No, really.) and the only person who can sing in the whole darn cast is the girl who plays Jasmine! Speaking of Jasmine, she also has a new song of her own which she sings really well, but the lyrics are not very good and it seems very out of place with the rest of the songs. It doesn’t sound like Aladdin, it sounds more like The Greatest Showman. Probably because it was written by the same people who did The Greatest Showman. Now, I haven’t seen that movie, but I am not a fan of the songs from that film. They sound way too poppy and not enough like musical theatre for my liking and the lyrics I think are just awful, but at least all the songs were like that in The Greatest Showman. In Aladdin, it just does not fit at all. The effects during the song were cool though, or at least they would be if I didn’t see literally the exact same thing before in Into the Woods and Avengers: Infinity War. That’s most of this movie’s problems summed up. No matter what it does, there is always another movie that does it better. Overall, this movie is an embarrassment. It’s a complete and utter waste of time. It’s pointless! Just stay home and watch the original! It’s shorter (Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, the remake is over 2 hours long! The original is under 90 minutes! It’s full of padding. It even ends with a big dance party scene like a DreamWorks movie. And it shows Aladdin and Jasmine getting married! What the heck?? They aren’t supposed get married until the third movie, after a direct-to-VHS sequel and a TV series!) and it is better in every way! It’s colourful, energetic, hilarious and a ton of fun! This is boring, tired, unfunny and frustrating. Do not watch this movie! Stop supporting this lazy crap! The only reason I did was because this movie has already made over a billion dollars and there is nothing I can do to affect its financial performance at this point, and that's really sad that a movie this bad is so successful. As happy as it would make me to join the bandwagon of contrarian **** for this one, I’m mostly fine with thinking about this movie as one of the purer but boring incarnations of Disney’s plan to soak nostalgic 90s children.

The update trips over itself to give Jasmine, Genie, and Jasmine’s handmaid Dalia, played by the wonderfully straight-faced Nasim Pedrad, fuller internal lives and agency. Some of that is welcome, like the side story between Dalia and Genie, which works a lot better than it ever could have with the otherwise superior Robin Williams at the helm. Will Smith can pull off the flirty, dashing, smoothness necessary to woo in a way that would not have played as convincingly with Robin’s more brittle, nervous energy. Aladdin and Jasmine are aged up: the actors are 26 and 27 rather than the teenagers of the animated version of the story, which solves some borderline behavior on Jafar’s part. But other things, like Jasmine’s song, feel empty of feeling and out of place with the rest of the film, probably because they were not meant for the film, but rather for play on the radio and Disney channel. There’s nothing wrong with including new music. (Wife has a note about the impressive quality of Mena Massoud and Naomi Scott’s singing and how the movie would’ve been much improved if the producers had allowed Will Smith to lip sync some of his more vocally challenging songs, rather than the Lin-Manuel Miranda-type sing-talking that he does.)

Jasmine herself is spared the indignities of inconsistently effective hypnotism, which apparently necessitates a chase scene by a parrot-dragon instead. In the end, she’s still placed in suspended animation for the big confrontation scene which makes me wonder what Anita Sarkeesian would say about the effectiveness of this update: Feminist Frequency’s Damsel in Distress series.

Wife describes this film as “completely unnecessary,” made the same attempts to update and address feminist critique to the story as they did in Beauty and the Beast, such as explaining the mother’s disappearance, since so many people have made fun of Disney for the “missing mother” problem. Wife likes, for instance, the way that Jasmine is included in the opening song, “One Jump Ahead,” rather than it only featuring Aladdin. But she says the new Jasmine song was not a worthy addition to Menken’s soundtrack. The dancing was one of the few aspects of the film that distinguished it from the original (something I agree with–dancing and singing are not points of spectacle in an animated feature, but live-action can hang its hat on the actor’s physicality).

One of Wife’s points of mild annoyance is Genie’s inconsistent power levels. Sometimes it seems like he has a lot of leeway, like when he magics an entire entourage of performers to accompany Prince Ali to Agrabah, yet he’s unable to make Aladdin a prince from a real place, or to make a fake place real for the purposes of a wish. This is especially important when Jafar makes his wish to be sultan, but Genie isn’t able (or maybe willing?) to make the court and court guards obey him. The wish is almost too-quickly overcome by a simple monologue by Jasmine, simperingly (my word) extolling the virtues of her father’s beneficent hereditary monarchy over the evils of another hereditary monarchy. Overall, she says, it was just OK, an entertaining way to spend two hours, but it doesn’t have the charm and fuzzies of the original, which is a shame.

Lindsay Ellis has an amazing video essay on the impact of Robin Williams on celebrity-driven animated movies in the 90s through the present day.

The musical numbers for the most part are good minus a few poor decisions for where to put them. Will Smith does great as a genie in his own right, and the actors for Aladdin and Jasmine were well chosen. I biggest gripe with the movie is Jafar. In the cartoon movie, Jafar is a vizier who is driven by not only his own selfish desire for power, but also by the infuriating awareness that he is under the command off an incompetent leader. I'm sure this at the very least was something that many could relate to, as Jafar was clearly capable of leading, and extremely effective in his ways, albeit they were evil. But in this new movie, the Sultan is not an incompetent buffoon, and Jafar is not an older magistrate who exudes an aura of danger, knowledge, and evil. The sultan is quite capable, and Jafar is more akin to a young statesman who desperately wishes to rise above his station. In the end this does not feel like Jafar because what he is stated to be, and what he is shown and written as do not match.

The movie is ok, but don't get your hopes up too much.

First Will Smith I am calling him Will Smith because that's what he is. He is as charismatic as usual but he is not playing a character he is playing himself. Aladdin is blend and lacks the personality of his cartoon counterpart, not a lot to say about this one. Jafar is miscast. He is not menacing or sleazy he is just there because someone had to be. Iago is waster. And Jasmine is no longer looking for true love she wants to be in charge. The song numbers are ok for what this movie is. In general the movie is a major let down. Aladdin is not the hero of his own story he is a side character. The movie is about Jasmine and her "rise to power". I say that because her motivations are changed to apparently reflect current year (2019). If they wanted to make a movie about her that's fine but why not go with a new take on it instead of changing the story. It worked for Maleficent why not do a movie called Jasmine and just run with it.
TLTR: If you are nostalgic for Aladdin just revisit the 1992 Disney classic.

Another year, another Disney remake.

They aren’t always bad, but they aren’t always good either. I haven’t seen them all, but I’d say The Jungle Book is probably the gold standard here, recreating and re-imagining the 78-minute animated flick into a thoroughly enjoyable and inventive adventure. Cinderella (yes, that existed) was definitely a by-the-numbers remake, though Lily James’ charming performance elevated it to a must-see. And the rest fall in line. Beauty and the Beast added nothing (though it had some magic) and I haven’t seen the Tim Burton remakes Alice in Wonderland and Dumbo (sorry, kinda).

Now we have Aladdin, directed by Guy Ritchie, surely a strange choice to direct a remake whose original is bursting with color, music, and light-heartedness. Ritchie’s best known movies are the heist movie Snatch, the Robert Downey Jr. led Sherlock Holmes and its inferior sequel, and the famous box-office bomb King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. None of them have any color, and though I am a fan of Downy as Sherlock, none of them are especially good. So how does Aladdin fair?

Not well, unfortunately. It’s more or less the same as the 1992 version without what made it so good. The original was a tight-paced 91-minute movie with Robin Williams at the height of his comedic powers and great visual effects for its time. But here the movie is stretched to a poorly-paced 128 minutes, without Robin Williams, and the visual effects aren’t up to snuff. We’ve come so far with the computer graphic imaging technology that gives reason for these remakes (showcased perfectly in The Jungle Book), but it’s evidently too much to hope for in Aladdin. The CGI of Genie looks weird, the magic carpet ride during “A Whole New World” (that song still slaps) looks like someone did it on photoshop, and the look of Rajah does not compare to Shere Khan.

Will Smith tried really hard to be the OG Genie, while adding a little Fresh Prince flair, but it was too much of an imitation: Robin Williams is untouchable here, and it didn’t work for me. Mena Massoud’s Aladdin was plainly fine, but it’s Naomi Scott’s performance as Jasmine that was a standout. She was the most natural and organic, giving her own performance as opposed to going through the motions of 1992’s version. Her new song was laaaame, though. (Here’s a better showcase of her talents from back her in Disney Channel days). The movie did have good choreography, and at least there is a lot of color, so props to Ritchie for going against type. After that though, the desert well runs dry.

I know I’m being harsh, but Aladdin is my favorite Disney movie, and I’ve seen it eleventy-six times. But some movies perhaps shouldn’t be remade, especially if they work better animated. Disney has obviously tapped into the zeitgeist of nostalgia and is printing money now. But it’s because we love these old movies, not because they are releasing something special now. Indeed, 2019’s Aladdin is void of magic, originality, and a good reason to exist. 2/5

There’s an upcoming Disney live-action movie as well and that would be The Lion King (2019). Most live-action Disney movies can never get better than the animated one and Aladdin’s one of them. First, the acting is kinda weak and bland. We had Mena Massoud as Aladdin. I know he tried really hard to be like Aladdin in the 1992 animated version. There’s also Will Smith as the Genie which was criticized online to be too blue but I didn’t think like that. In my opinion, he was pretty okay and funny as well, even though he couldn’t smash the role like Robin Williams. However, Naomi Scott stole the show as Princess Jasmine. She smashed it for a bit and I was kinda impressed as I said the performances were weak. Though the WORST in here was Jafar played by Marwan Kenzari. His voice was young and friendly, he wasn’t that evil but to be quite idotic and crazy and I had no favour for his roles. Yes, the movie was really entertaining with awesome magical special effects, Will Smith’s humor and more but each of those had problems as well as the musical. They didn’t lack any, but they made the musical more boring, more forgettable and less exciting. The music got lower and the creators got lazier and lazier. They also made the final battle worse. It didn’t take long and it was totally bright. Brightness here and there. Comparing to the animated version, it was totally dark and that’s how the final battle should be. Instead in this live-action, it didn’t take that long and people in Agrabah were like “look at my tricks here, see what I can do!”. They didn’t even pay attention that Jafar’s the ruler, not the Sultan. When Jafar turned into a Genie, he looked like a moron more than a powerful being. His face and hair, it was horrible. They also had new stuffs added to the movie. They were weird and annoying, also new characters as well like Dalia played by Nasim Pedrad. I didn’t see that character in animated Aladdin. She was okay to be added to make the movie funnier but the other new things are unnecessary. It made the movie boring and also took a bit long time and it was 128 minutes comparing to the 92 minutes of the animated Aladdin and it was almost perfect and almost the best Disney animated movie ever made. Personally the movie was kinda disappointing and didn’t live up to the hype. I could barely praise many parts of Aladdin. I bet Disney fans and other types of audiences would like it but Aladdin surely deserved to be mixed from me. It’s just a bland live-action like others. This is definitely not a whole new world! Of course this movie had to end with the princess taking over the kingdom. Can't have a man ruling things now can we? ...and Disney pushed this at every turn.

Liked it better than the Beauty and the Beast remake. Course I think this remake had the liberty of the source material being a more lighthearted comedy, giving this adaptation's writers more breathing room.

This movie follows the basic plot points of the original, but it does a decent job of coming up with with some fairly good original jokes and other content. Jasmine (the Power Rangers movie's Naomi Scott) and Jafar (Marwen Kenzari) get more backstory and motivation, and the Genie (Will Smith) and Aladdin (Mena Massoud) have more time to naturally build their friendship.

The first ten minutes or so are a little top heavy. The events up to and involving Aladdin meeting Jasmine seem to be really fast forwarded, and it seems odd. This movie is 38 minutes longer than the original. Why the need for condensation? The One Jump Ahead music sequence definitely looks like they sped up the footage. The rest of the films mostly moves smoothly with a couple quick edits that seem odd. It definitely feels like Nasim Pedrad's character, a handmaiden named Dalia, and Billy Magnusson's Prince Anders had more stuff that was cut.

Will Smith is his old charming self. (It's been a while since we've see him go full Smith.) Massoud is a very likable Aladdin. Scott is a good Jasmine ,but some of her female empowerment lines don't work. I don't blame her, she just has some forced dialogue. (To clarify, I'm saying it doesn't work because of the script's execution and not the actual message.) Dalia, created mostly for someone else for Jasmine and the Genie to talk with, is a funny, slightly-off kilter character. Iago's character (Alan Tudyk) feels the most changed from the original. Here he sounds more like a parrot and talks in short beats. I didn't dislike it. You're never going to match Gilbert Godfried if you try to copy him.

Jafar is definitely the weak point of the movie. Yes, I did give props to his backstory but that is about it. The original was one of Disney's greatest villains, A wonderful combination of cunning, droll humor, and malevolence. This guy is either dull or sounds like he's a child throwing a brief temper tantrum that's just for show. Kenzari doesn't sound intimidating at all. (BTW: Having seen director Guy Ritchie's two Sherlock Holmes movies, what is with him and low-energy villains?) He's also there as the main figure representing society's attempts to silence Jasmine's strong female voice, and he just sounds so unnatural at these moments.

The movie looks great; very colorful and lavish. The musical numbers were well shot. Friend Like Me may be one of the most ambitious live action musical segments in a while. Yes, many fans of the original may be frustrated that the musical numbers or action scenes just don't match the strength of the original. (Their isn't even any giant snake Jafar, although I still felt the final act's action piece worked.) That's true, but by itself I say this is a likable mvoie.

They keep all the original songs except Jafar's Prince Ali reprise, which is so short anyway that I'll allow it. Friend Like Me and Prince Ali get a hip-hop revision to them, which actually works better than I expected. Not so much with Will Smith and DJ Kaled's rap version of Friend Like Me during the credits. Did not care for. Did Emma Watson's weak singing voice in Beauty and the Beast bother you? Prepare to be more disappointed. Both Smith and Massoud have weak voices. Whereas B&B had three new songs, we only get one here: Speechless, a song for Jasmine and done by original composer Alan Menken with Greatest Showman's Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. I really liked this one. Unlike her co-stars Naomi Scott's got pipes!

Overall, if you haven't been fond of the recent Disney remakes, this probably won't change your mind. But, I think the others will have a nice time.

It remains one of the stand-out turns in a career that had more true magic than anything the genie in this tragic and pointless waste of effort can even pretend to muster. At times, it seems that the only point for this film is to "update" the storytelling for our postmodernist times, which while meaning well, does more harm than good. Hollywood needs to accept that while some of its classic films may not match up to our culture's current counterbalancing efforts in terms of social justice and cultural sensitivity, their value as art often outweighs what are seen as anachronistic flaws. Sometimes, it's better to leave well enough alone. Expand

At least we will have Jafar turn into a massive Cobra at the end of the film to use Disney's CGI to great effect right?... Nah. That's replaced by that big parrot I mentioned earlier.

I'll do tons of comparisons to the animated movie because it deserves to be compared, this isn't an adaptation, this movie is really trying to be the same movie as the animated one. It seemed that Disney didn't care in getting talented people to make this movie as good or better than the original, the direction is bland with no style, the cinematography is mediocre, this movie looked like an ad for some Aladdin Disneyland ride. Some CGI looked bad and hilarious, cheesy slow-motion in 2019, new characters and songs added were unnecessary, many of the characters lost their charisma and don't feel the same anymore compared to the animated version, the acting was cartoonish and the genie and Abu looked hilariously awful. Speaking about Abu, there's one reason why Disney's take on Aladdin SHOULD be ANIMATED: The animal characters of the original have no charisma or emotion in this movie because they CAN'T EMOTE! They're realistic animals! However I do liked some stuff. The acting is cartoonish and cheesy, making it bad for me but Will Smith as the Genie was actually good and pretty funny, mainly because his character is meant to be cartoonish, I thought Will Smith would play Will Smith but his performance was actually good #ForgiveMeWill. Some new comedy scenes were really funny and the best of the movie. That's about it for the good stuff.

Disney, please stop remaking your animated movies in live-action, I would've loved to see this movie remade but CGI ANIMATED! It would be cool to see classic Disney movies remade in 3D animation with the technology you now have! Making them live-action just takes away a lot of the "Magic" these movies had, like a vibrant color palette, exagerated movements and expressions, geniunely breathtaking visual effects, etc...

Aladdin has one of the best stories so how could they mess this up... Well to start off, the actors, all of them, including Will Smith, absolutely suck. It was a very cringe-y movie. Guy Ritchie was a terrible choice for director. It had this weird fast forwarding and slow motion mixed into it. Oh and to make it worse Disney has to roll out the feminism agenda by making the women smart and wise and the prince courting Jasmine, an absolute moron. I figured they’d go the cocky arrogant route but no let’s make him stupid. Oh and they made him white with some terrible German accent because Allah forbid they make someone of color look dumb. This next bit is a tiny spoiler but not really. Jasmine wants to be Sultan. Ok cool. Women in Saudi Arabia just got the right to drive a car. That’s pushing it a little. Overall the original is much more charming and told the story better in less time. Expand

The only good one is what they did with Jasmine. Naomi Scott was incredible as Jasmine and played her to absolute perfection to her abilities. But the thing I want to talk about is what they did with her character. Instead of keeping her the same as her animated counterpart they changed her so she better fit a strong female that should be seen more in film. She also had the best song in the entire film and I hope it gets nominated for best original song for the Oscars. The set design in this film was outstanding and just looked spectacular on the big screen. All of the sets looked like it was taken right out of the animated film and just increased. The costume design was also really good. Even though we already knew who the common people were and the royalty it still showed the status difference. Although I did hate how they made Aladdin have clean clothes. Now, the original songs are classics and everybody knows them and I hate how they changed some of the lyrics mainly with “One Jump Ahead” and “Prince Ali”. I do understand why they changed them to help fit the story but with “Prince Ali” one of the lyrics was changed and it pissed me off. I talked about how Naomi Scott is great as Jasmine but for the rest of the actors, it wasn’t the same. Now, I’m not going to hate on Will Smith as the Genie because he did accept a tough challenge of taking over for the legendary Robin Williams and he did make it his own but my main probably was with Mena Massoud and Marwan Kenzari, who plays Jafar. Mena Massoud was a decent Aladdin what he lacked was the singing ability but I will give him credit for putting himself out there. But, Marwan Kenzari just didn’t do it for me as Jafar. He pretty much was a boring villain who was two-dimensional. There were two big scene changes that just bugged me all because it affected the story and those were the opening scene and the ending. The opening made no sense because it was out of order and the ending just was a completely different ending that sucked. This film does keep the original message of always be yourself but it messes it up with one thing. Also, the CGI in this film is just bad. Nothing CGI really looked realistic in any way. There were lots of scenes in this film that awkwardly ended and transitioned to the next with no proper connection. I’m not sure if it was just me but the humour in this film was kinda weak. The score by Alan Menken was good at least. In the end, Aladdin (2019) doesn’t have the same magic as the original animated one and shouldn’t have been touched at all. It’s a good kids film but for people who grew up with the original, it’s not that good. Expand

What i like was the fantastic look of the Movie, i really enjoyed the Musical parts and the Main cast was really solid. Will smith as Genie did a good job without trying to recreate the Legendary Robin Williams Voice acting. But the Casting choice for Jafar was god Awful. Also The Movie was a little to long. In the First and Second ACTS i was on board but the 3rd ACT kind of lost me.
And being a Movie directed by Guy Ritchie i kind of missed his Style. There isn't anything what makes you realize "Yep, this man directed this Movie". I personally find this was a missed chance to let this Movie stand on his own two feets. A solid Movie but i wouldn't watch it a thousand times like the Original.

Face it, they are never going to be as good as their original animated counterpart. But by bringing their A game, Disney is the only studio that can deliver this sort of film. Sure, some of the special effects feel a bit wonky, but the return of Alan Menken, along with the writing team behind The Greatest Showman, delivers new materials that are great. The cast is perfect: but the stand out is Naomi Scott as Jasmine, what a star making turn. As per usual, it is a 'remake' so scenes are lifted directly from their animated counterpart, some with limited success. But for the most part, the film works very well. Expand

It’s like an addition, Beauty and the Beast was fine but it was still just a shot for shot remake, Dumbo was not fine and it was somehow worse than a shot for shot remake and now the Disney remake parade continues with yet another classic Aladdin. Remaking a movie into live action almost shot for shot, what is the point? I mean I know its Disney and it’s for kids and all that jazz but honestly is it too much to ask for something a little less PG. What has it added? Nothing, sure it looks pretty, the costumes and the set pieces are fantastic but it’s not better, it’s nowhere near better. Re-release the original animation for the kiddies and remake something a little different for everyone else and not just a bunch of fluff. Aladdin 2019 is painful, specifically the singing, the singing is a cringe inducing auto-tuned, failed attempt to recreate something magical.

I’m just going to go ahead and presume you’ve all seen the original animated version, it’s the same story again only more dragged out. The lovable street rat Aladdin (Mena Massoud) finds a magic lamp containing a Genie (Will Smith) and cue wishes, songs and a magic carpet. Also featuring Jasmine (Naomi Scott) who not only has more lines but her own song too yey! And Jafar (Marwan Kenzari) who I’m sorry is so bland he manages to be upstaged by a CGI carpet. Aladdin should not have been remade, the result is bland and unnecessary. That isn’t just because of Robin Williams although that is a major part of it. Williams as the Genie is a universally loved performance, it’s iconic and it’s hilarious so Will Smith had some big shoes to fill. Is he terrible? No, he’s honestly the best thing about this remake. He put his own stamp on it and does his very best to add comedy as much as he can. It doesn’t always work but he’s trying his best. He certainly looks like he’s having a good time and I can’t really say that about anyone else.

There’s only one way to stop this laziness of Disney remaking their entire back catalogue because it must be too much trouble to pick up a book and make something original for a change. I’ve said this before but I’ll say it again if we stop seeing them they’ll stop making them yet Dumbo is still in the box office top ten and why should Aladdin be any different? I know a losing battle when I see one. Aladdin is going to dominate for the next few weeks because a film aimed at children and suitable for all ages will always make its money back and then some. Recommended for the die-hard Disney fans or anyone wanting to entertain their kids for a couple of hours for everyone else Aladdin is a definite skippable movie.
