Simply put, UFC is the most realistic fighting game ever. [Apr 2002, p.68]
  2. A great playing and pretty game to look at. Yet, this game could have been so much more with the addition of a career mode.
  3. An excellent, original fighting game that's especially fun for two players.
  4. Bloodier dustups there are, and faster moving ones too, yet for those who like their streetfighting with style, UFC Tapout hits harder than a bare-knuckle jab to the kidney.
  5. The fighters are scary-real looking, and they animate without hiccups and with perfect transitions. Facial expressions are also top notch.

Getting a quick tapout or countering a move and shoving your opponent's face in the ground got a yelp of joy out of me many times.
  7. Those looking for a deeper fighting engine will be happy, as will those who didn't want their strategic fighter over-done.

While Tapout didn't bandage the wounds of its predecessor, it's much better than a punch in the groin. [Mar 2002, p.84]
  9. Boxing and wrestling games seem rather sedate compared to the brutish force of this game. But if you can get past the graphical violence, and enjoy the challenge of a controlled street fight that looks amazing, then you will probably enjoy this brawl.
  10. Limited single-player depth, as well as a few other minor issues, keeps UFC from being truly great.

Despite these imperfections, though, UFC: Tapout still reigns victorious.
  12. The submissions and grapples system is the best out there.
  13. Within two hours we beat every Championship mode, and made it through ten of the arcade matches, where we were quickly squashed by the cheap AI. It's a shame, because we were having so much playing up until that point.

It takes far too long to get good.

I can't tell how totally creeped out I am by a select screen covered with near naked men so real looking you can see their pit hair, who all look like they're a Skoal can away from a Springer episode. [Apr 2002, p.63]

It's more fun for folks who just want to remember two or three key moves and make those last through a night of clunky combat with a few buddies. [Apr 2002, p.144]

During the heat of combat, the game controls like a fighter until you get taken into a grappling situation, and resultant shift in style isn't so smooth. [Spring 2002, p.90]
  18. Crave substituted in for graphics at the expense of engaging game play, realistic audio, and any other creative ingenuity that could have been used in creating this game.

It's a great title for hardcore UFC fans who are looking for authenticity and stripped bare chuddies minimalism, but for gamers who have been spoiled by a sea of options, moves, and thrills this is far too... skinny.
  20. On one hand, it’s got quite a good structure and the technical style is impressive, but on the other it’s just not fun to play.
