Simplistic fighting that one has to actively make more difficult for him or herself is never a welcome addition to any game, and while the storyline of Samurai Warriors is well-executed in the game, and while the depth of the game is ever-present, it's not enough to save the title from monotony and boredom for most gamers.

Only negative I have with this is the fact that most of the game can be beaten by repeatedly tapping the "X" button; varying control scheme would have been nice.
  3. This isn't a game that's going to reel in the longtime Dynasty Warriors naysayer; this is a game that is designed to appeal to an already loyal fan base, and it serves its purpose perfectly.
  4. For what it is, it's the best in it's field, however this will divide gamers between those who love the frantic action, and those who just see the repetitive slice and dice – me? well I like it like my Japanese food – now and again and in small portions.
  5. It gets seven because it's a great example of technical gameplay and a completive attitude to giving gamers value for money, but if we see the same thing again we won't be able to be so kind.

This is a game best enjoyed over time. I guarantee you'll get bored at some point if you try to cram it in over a day or two. Take it one level, one mode, and one character at a time and you'll be bound to reap the rewards that Samurai Warriors has to offer.
  7. Whilst enjoyable the game play does get repetitive after extensive play but still remains fun if you're wishing to cause mass killings with ease.
  8. The new abilities, such as deflecting arrows, are a welcome addition, but what the series could really use is a combat system that involved more than pressing two buttons in random combinations, a system that has worked well for the previous games in the series but has finally become stale.

It seems strange that Koei would incorporate these RPG-like features into the game in such a halfhearted fashion and the overall effect is sort of like giving the samurai warrior a sort of cool angular armor but no pants. [Aug 2004, p.94]
  10. Players that are new to the KOEI party will undoubtedly feel overwhelmed in the first mission, stunned in the second mission, and then ultimately bored by the time that missions five and six rear their blood-stained heads.
  11. The game might make a good rental if you're looking for some hardcore hack and slash action, but is scarcely worth buying.

This is a series that sells well. Koei has taken that into account and seems to be deliberately treading water. What was pretty cool in "Dynasty Warriors 2" seems much less so several games later.

Central gameplay is little more than repetitive button-mashing that grows old quickly. [Aug 2004, p.58]
