It all looks lush and the gameplay is surprisingly enjoyable despite the frustration, but it's not one for the casual gamer.
  2. If you can adjust to the tricky controls and the shockingly hard difficulty setting, then you'll find a fun, original title that mixes current 3D game design with the style and atmosphere of a retro classic.
  3. I've never seen a shooter that I could really consider a linear game before, but rather than let you destroy monsters your way, GUNVALKYRIE has too many movement puzzles that can only be solved one way that the designers anticipated.
  4. It's a niche title that takes time, open arms, and very, very fast hands.
  5. While it all could have worked out nicely and been a solid action game, the game's touchy and occasionally awkward control pushes the game past the "nice, firm challenge" stage and up into the "frustrating trial-and-error" difficulty level.

No amount of graphical frosting can save GV from its terrible, overly complex controls...GV will frustrate the hell out of you. [Apr 2002, p.143]

Valkyrie's controls are so klunky...it feels worse than just awkward, it literally hurts to play Valkyrie for more than a couple hours at a time. [Spring 2002, p.82]
  8. It's just too unnecessarily frustrating. Gunvalkyrie simply should have had a little more polishing.

The most baffling part of the game's design [is] the horribly inept control scheme. Instead of fully taking advantage of the Xbox controller's functions, everything is crammed and clumped together.
  10. Gets high marks for its animé style, engaging boss encounters, and interesting control system. But similar games like "Jet Force Gemini" or "Body Harvest" offered more in the way of story and role-playing elements to help break up the monotony of blasting bugs and jumping platforms.
  11. This is about the hardest game I've ever played. Rarely do I get frustrated at a game, but I found myself constantly pausing this game and walking away to blow off steam.

The sad thing is, blasting these hostile extraterrestrial invaders is a thrill-less and somewhat aggravating endeavor...The world would definitely be a better place without it. [Mar 2002, p.85]

Interesting story and good graphics for its time. The only thing keeping it from a 10 is a lack of polish. Full Review »

Excelente, recomendo a todos! Full Review »

Gunvalkyrie is one of those game that are like a good B-movie. You don't expect much, but you get out of it with a satisfying feeling.

The game is an arcade style running-gunning with a bit of plateforming. You have multiple within the same area (but still different) where you gun down enemies, salavge equipment, or kill a boss. At the end you get score for your time, kills, and performance (this is what got me in this game). Then the score let you upgrade your weapons and armor. *Important: the game explains quickly how to move jump and shoot. What it doesn't tell you and that I believe most gamers never realise, is that you can play a whole mission without touching the more then 3 to 4 times.
The game is a well balance complex mechanic. And this is why I love this game. You can play it by using your normal control and fight with the game mechanic woundering why it is so hard to play OR you can figure out that if you spam your booster without ever depleting your fuel, you can stay in the air indefinitely. Making this game a whole new type of gameplay and a brand new game. The inverted controla makes way more sense when you are gliding like a plane and shooting down all your enemies.

For the speed runners and hardcore gamer, this game brings the challenge of spped , verticality, and instant reflexes. But this is only possible if you are really an hardcore gamer. Casual players will easily get bored after the first round if they are not enjoying beating their previous scores.
