    Great game! The story was fun and the audio us great! The gameplay is kinda bland but still fun. The visuals are great for environment but not for characters as much.

    Great game with a good story that hooks you in and drags you right through to the harrowing end certainly has nods to Silent Hill. Graphically it may not stretch the series x and has some lets be honest graphical glitches, the two world premise certainly needs the machines horse power.

    I give this game a 10 because of plot, soundtrack, and, especially of it’s ending (I was really impressed) and the very main reason i rate this high is todays lack of single player games. And Medium is an atmospheric, nice game! Low budget production and Blooperteam inexperience explains cons like sometimes flawed game design (staged runs from the Beast) archaic gameplay elements (remindsI give this game a 10 because of plot, soundtrack, and, especially of it’s ending (I was really impressed) and the very main reason i rate this high is todays lack of single player games. And Medium is an atmospheric, nice game! Low budget production and Blooperteam inexperience explains cons like sometimes flawed game design (staged runs from the Beast) archaic gameplay elements (reminds of Syberia which was released about 20 years ago!). Otherwise there are numbers of cool/wow episodes, great acting, amazing picture quality (with so-so optimisation on XSX). I really liked split/screen mixing through the game, it feels perfectly balanced to me. In conclusion, Medium is an awesome game! I have high hopes for the developers team and their next release.… Expand

    This game has soo much potential that just wasn't tapped into. There's no action sequences which makes the game very full after a long period of time and the graphics are overall just meh. The story was a masterpiece on the other hand and carries the game big time. Gameplay 5 gets very boring over a long period of time.

    The gameplay has its ups (most puzzle or story scenes with the protagonist), and downs (some action scenes, some scenes with Thomas), but overall it's a well delivered story.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. One of the most BOOOOOOOORRRRIIINNGG game I have ever played. I usually don't play AA games, but I wanted to see what's the hype all about. OVERHYPED, OVERRATED GAME. Can't pan camera, meaning movement is difficult. I tried 4 times to run from maw after releasing Richard's soul and then I realized it's not my fault that I am failing, ITS THE NOOB DEVELOPERS. NO WONDER THEY CANT MAKE AAA GAMES. When running, Marianne tends to aimlessly run coz of that auto camera panning. The noob device can't seriously expect me to press a button for which I have to line up perfectly with the hole in the wall,then get confused about whether or not I should move the light or open the gate using bolt cutter that I have to equip and press LT and RT 4 times before the chain breaks and then push a button again to open the gets by when she is nit running anymore - all in a very limited amount of time?The mission is so UNBALANCED and BIASED that I didn't even feel like playing anymore.     Great original story. Character development was good. Atmosphere was great. The ending was meh. Only glaring issue is the lack of gameplay. A game can be an artful masterpiece without being a walking simulator.

    By far the best game ever released by Bloober team. Great and emotional story with opressing atmosphere. Good graphics, great voice acting and simple but clever puzzles. Overall a great experience and a must play for those who have game pass.

    I was waiting for this game. In these years of endless remakes, remasters and sequels I above all treasure fresh, new, weird and brave projects.
    But after release of the Medium I decided to check metacritic before throwing ma money in the screen, because, well, I have responsibilities and try to avoid impulsive purchases.
    People was writing that game was boring and meh overall. I started having second thoughts and didn't bought it. Then I got game pass as a women's day present and I got opportunity to check the game for free basically.
    And now I want to also buy it, so it will stay in my collection.
    It's beautiful, and perfect for people that enjoy similar stuff (well duh that's why genres exist)
    I'm giving this game 10, because it doesn't deserve the ~70% score it has now, and I want to push the rating a bit. Now, objectively it's probably 9, but still!)

    [STORY] is interesting and all tangled in a good way. I was rereading in-game notes of different characters to understand the chronology and events, and it was part of the fun.
    [DESIGN] I'm sorry, but I can't stand whining about graphics. I believe that design is far more important. And artists behind this piece did really good job!
    [GAMEPLAY] Split screen for different worlds? Fresh and new. Puzzles? It's like Syberia, but on easy setting. I have found it very comforting, because I was invested in the story and atmosphere. For me hard annoying puzzles tend to ruin all the fun, when I have a story to worry about. If you wanna play hard puzzles, please play Baba is You for example.
    [IS IT SCARY] This CANNOT be universal.
    I personally felt uneasy about the main monster, it has just hit the spot. But also I've heard about people getting pissed off because of the uhh.. scary disturbing events in story? I'm sorry again, but this is a horror! If you are relatively easy triggered, pretty please, just don't play/watch/read horrors, okay? And for the record, there's nothing, not a single line or word in dialogues or notes, that would say anything controversial OR like even pronouncing "bad" words/names of universally bad things. Dialogues made with attention to this, and leave a very precise feeling that yeah of course, BAD things are BAD. And once again, it's a horror, you can't be scared without some nerve-tickling hints and meanings.

    [TLDR]
    - Should you try it?
    Do you like "walking simulators" story driven games, like Dear Esther, Everybody Gone to the Rapture, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, What Remains of Edith Finch? Then YES, definitely.
    - Don't like those? Please just don't play the Medium then, you will end up giving it low rating, just because it's not your genre.
    - Unfamiliar with those games I mentioned?
    Well ask yourself if you are up to watching a movie (sometimes intense, again, it's a horror) and making choices along the way.

    Beautiful game with an amazing history! The gameplay is smooth and nostalgic, but the transition of the two worlds is a completely new gen experience! It is unbelievable the score and some reviews clearly to underscore the game.

Sadly the gameplay is the weak element with its clunky movement feel, basic puzzles and repeated use of stealth sections brought the pacing down at times.    … Expand

    Before I comment them, let me say that graphically, the game is very nice, specially the real world. The characters movement could be improved, but are ok. And the voices volume is not properly levelled, so some are too loud and other too low.

    Getting back to the poor design choices:

    The first one is the perspective used. Using fixed camera views, which do not allow the player to properly see the objects and details of the scenes that far is really annoying and has brought me the same clunky feeling of the first 3D games, like when playing the first Alone in the dark. I thought that 20 years of 3D video games had taught us some lessons, but they insist in making the same mistakes again.

    On the other hand, when you interact with an object, the game kind of opens a new space, zooming in the object but limiting the pan you can make. Sometimes interacting with a object requires opening two of those spaces. When done, you have to exit those spaces with a button press. All this makes exploring the areas very frustrating.

    Although the idea of having two worlds is very interesting, the design of the alternate reality does not make much sense. For instance, at some point in the game you find a corridor with a huge hole in the ground that does no let you pass. Switching to the alternate reality, you see that the hole is not that big in that reality and you can cross. Really? The alternate reality is supposed to be the spiritual world, but the physical objects should be the same (and generally are, and just have different appearance). That is not playing fair.

    The puzzles presented often do not make much sense, for example, you are in a room with the exit door closed, and for the door to open you have to reproduce a tape which has no relation to the door. It does not make any sense and reduces your decision making in the game to having to try everything to advance.

    Despite all this flaws, the game is fun and is half as scary as it could have been, something I also appreciate.    … Expand

    Es un juego que no desepciona la historia es profunda y te sientes atrapado de inicio a fin, la forma con la que juega con la narrativa es genial y la historia es muy interesante por lo que te sientes con la necesidad de terminarla, y te hace rejugarla sin importar cuantas veces la has terminado.

Seem to be put into game just to slow the progession or generate play time - I can’t emphasize this enough. Few good puzzles, most extremely simple or uninteresting which makes them feel lengthy. One example of a good puzzle is the room in the bunker where player needs to initiate an out of body experience as a decoy to clear the path and then quickly return to body. This could be used a lot more, especially with envirommental puzzle, imagine time sensitive dual reality Portal-like puzzle. Also there needs to be at least a basic form of combat, character advancement, etc. The story just plays itself out, player does not matter, has no choice, no influence and it looks as if the game does not even try to immerse the player. The story itself, i quite like it. Although there are too many names thrown around without faces to associate them with, so it can be confusing. Environmental storytelling is great. Graphically the game is fine-ish, but could use a bit of polish in certain areas and most certainly not what I expect from next gen AAA title. Many animations are jaggedy a.f. and glitchy, what I often notice in Unreal Engine games, however some cutscenes are great. Some camera angles and frequent switching of them when navigating environment is very annoying and makes it hard to realize where in a room you actually are. What I like about this game is its *great concept a its great potential*. I like what this game could be, not what it is. I often found myself thinking of new mechanics that could be introduced, it’s almost as if the game invites you to add something to its world, make your own little version of it in your head, which I find fascinating. While dual-reality gameplay is a great technical showcase, I actually think the quality of the content suffered because of it. By essentially making the environments twice and spending resources on it, I imagine a lot of content had to be cut. If this had another 2 years of development it would be a terrific game. Ultimately I will gladly give Bloober another chance, but they need to hold their ground and do not succumb to pressures from publisher. It was a mistake rushing this and advertising it as a AAA launch title, when clearly, it wasn’t even finished. If only it was less ambitious.… Expand

    It's short too... 6 hours and you will have it beat with no reply needed.

    I feel there's too many people with their xbox tinted specs on hoping for that blockbuster exclusive game we've all been waiting for but this ain't it. Give it a go if you must on game pass but don't buy it! You will be very disappointed.    … Expand

    here you play as a medium, you get a call, you go to this creepy hotel to investigate the call, and things don’t get normal from there… reviewing this game was a roller coaster of feelings, as the medim is a roller coaster of quality.. the cutscenes are great, the voice acting, the chracters, the story, all amazing, but the game itself feels really dated, tons of texture pop ins, the game will chug along at times, and overall marianne feels super awkward to control, the cameras, the movements, everything to remind you that despite the acting and cutscenes =, this is indeed not a AAA title, it feels big budget indie, which is fine especially in the hands of bloober team, they are great at creeping you out and building intriguing environments.
    As a medium you can go back and forth between your world and the spirit world, and you get to see both sides at a time, going back and forth to find items or interact with objecst to solve a puzzle or open up an area for the other, it really is a fun little back and forth puzzle game from time to time. However the execution isn’t quite the most enjoyable.. infact overall, The medium is probably one of the least enjoyable horror games ive played in a while, its slow and tedious, these sections while theyre a cool idea, never do anything fresh with it, youre basically doing the alive or dead version of everything you’ve done in horror games before but in accordion from.. Im over dead ends and fixing fuse boxes and finding valves… can horror games come up with literally anything else to do than find the things that’s missing….
    Im so over this type of gameplay, im over being in the same areas for 10-20 minutes just clicking on stuff until I find a missing lever, its boring, borderline painful after a while, and really makes your game feel like a chore.
    Please give me something new, the indie games industry pumps out 20 of these games every year.
    I don’t mind it every once in a while, but when that’s the main hook of your game, I cant.. And with the medium lasting about 6 and a half hours, it feels twice that long with how slow paced it is…
    But ultimately The Medium is saved by its cast of characters and story, I had to see where this was all going, even if it felt like it was going nowhere, enjoy this hotel for the rest of your life.

    Hearkens back to the 3rd person horror of the late 90s-early 2000s (like Silent Hill 1/2/3/4) but The Medium also manages to find it's own niche and is successful in doing so.

The camera angles are a work of art. It takes control away from the games and makes you vulnerable at times.     To start with The Medium has fantastic mechanics from the way the split the screen view to switch between worlds everything just works so well.
    The atmosphere really draws you in and at certain moments you really do feel the dread that's encroaching on you.

    The visuals & voice acting is beyond what i was expecting, finding out more of the story as you go along is such a treat.

    Um jogo que te prende e supera as suas expectativas inicias (negativas). Logo de inicio o jogo desperta uma certa estranheza por conta de sua mecânica na movimentação de seu personagem, o qual se assemelha muito as franquias de jogos antigos do mesmo gênero, inicialmente isso é um ponto negativo, porém, aos poucos você vai se envolvendo com a história do jogo, e isso acaba extinguindo essaUm jogo que te prende e supera as suas expectativas inicias (negativas). Logo de inicio o jogo desperta uma certa estranheza por conta de sua mecânica na movimentação de seu personagem, o qual se assemelha muito as franquias de jogos antigos do mesmo gênero, inicialmente isso é um ponto negativo, porém, aos poucos você vai se envolvendo com a história do jogo, e isso acaba extinguindo essa dificuldade de "aceitação" com a sua mecânica (isso também vai para a ideia de jogar entre dois mundos, eu terminei o jogo achando essa implementação de jogar entre os dois mundos como algo fantástico, algo que eu não achava inicialmente). Agora vamos para o ponto negativo: Falta otimização, durante o jogo você percebe erros de renderização, quedas de frames em alguns cenários, e as vezes aparece pequenas partículas coloridas durante o jogo (não com tanta frequência quanto os dois primeiros itens citados), no geral, um polimento faria bem para o The Medium. Esse jogo merece uma nota 85~87, não é excelente, porém não é horrível como alguns comentaram por aqui, apesar de seus pontos negativos, não merece nota negativa e muito menos nota zero.… Expand

    This game is hilarious. It’s a homage of the classic type of survival horror, but it’s kind more of a psychological thriller. This game is definitively *not* for all the players but the atmosphere, the picture, the soundtrack and even though the gameplay, it’s way too cool. I would give a solid 85-88 overall.

    The game has good story and interesting plot, the visuals in this game are great and the camera angles are amazing it gets you in the mood of the game also the sound track is solid, the bad side of the game is that its short i took me around 6 hours to finish the game and i wish we got more information about the "other side"

    Si eres un jugador al que le gusta tomarse con calma los videojuegos, tratar de disfrutarlos al máximo y te gusta el tipo de género del que trata The Medium, te recomiendo jugarlo, es una experiencia muy buena y con la cual se pasan horas bastante entretenidas, eso sí, el juego es corto pero con la suficiente capacidad de mantenerte enganchado al mismo hasta que sin darte cuenta te loSi eres un jugador al que le gusta tomarse con calma los videojuegos, tratar de disfrutarlos al máximo y te gusta el tipo de género del que trata The Medium, te recomiendo jugarlo, es una experiencia muy buena y con la cual se pasan horas bastante entretenidas, eso sí, el juego es corto pero con la suficiente capacidad de mantenerte enganchado al mismo hasta que sin darte cuenta te lo pasas.     Overall 7/10, but only due to this being on GamePass.
    Played on XSX.
    Ok adventure game. Not really scary, tho the story is interesting from start to end.
    Also this game is an Xbox Series exclusive, but comes from a small studio so do not expect next gen graphics. Looks ok, nothing spectacular. Puzzles are easy but still ok.

    Now, what I disliked:

    Grandisimo juego, te mantiene en tensión toda la partida y tiene una historia genial y muy bien hilada. Las mecanicas para los puzles con el doble mundo son muy originales, quizá se les podría haber sacado muchisimo más jugo del que tienen pero esperemos que si hay una segunda parte lo hagan.

    It took me 7 1/2 hours for medium and achieved 840 gamerscore. An entertaining horror story game that was told in a terrific way and that just lacked the threat of its horror element.

    story

    It was exciting, thrilling and well staged. The cut scenes, echoes, collectibles tell the intense ride of the medium Marianne. At no point did I feel any length in the game, on the contrary, you were actually always curious to see how it would go on. The story of Marianne and the uncovering of the past was a success from start to finish.

    While playing, you are constantly encouraged to make assumptions and interpret in order to recognize the picture that is emerging.
    Spoiler:
    The parentheses at the end are also very well interwoven for me. It all starts with a dead girl and that's how it ends? It remains to be seen whether Marianne killed herself or Lilly. I guess the former.

    Difficult topics are also addressed, where with some one can only guess what happened.

    Gameplay

    If you know the games from BlooperTeam, you know that it is probably a walking simulator. But the great thing about it all is the dual gameplay. That not only has to serve as a pure puzzle-solving aspect, but also shows a great staged world and is part of the protagonist. The creativity of the scenery really amazed me.
    Spoiler: memory

    The second memory from Thomas (Henry) was really cool, with the files etc., staged
    You could also interact differently in both worlds and the simultaneous rendering of the worlds was amazing.

    In terms of horror, the game could have gone better, it was way too easy to avoid the monster. You didn't even have to make an effort. The puzzles weren't really difficult either, but I don't think that's bad.

    Graphics / performance

    The Medium looks terrific in places, which is mainly due to the already mentioned very creative expression in its scenery. The two rendered worlds have very beautiful settings and yes, the demon world has a strange aesthetic in it too. Sometimes the game is staged in a pretty disgusting way (cutting skin).

    Much, Much praise for the game. But now I have to leave something out on the technology. I had to stop the game on my PC (this is not a bad PC) because it did not run smoothly at all. I've tried everything, but no chance to get the game to work properly. Unfortunately, I don't know why.

    Even on the Series X there were occasional FPS stutters, but it remained largely stable here. Despite all that, you always had such an uneven feeling when it came to the technology and that pulled me a bit out of the very dense atmosphere. I now have to look again in retrospect to see if there are better settings or something similar, but the problems were also reported in large numbers on Reddit and Co.

    Conclusion

    For me a terrific "horror" story, for me other story elements were much more intense than the horror aspect, which looks beautiful and is pleasantly entertaining. Unfortunately the technology weakens, therefore 9/10 skin flaps.    … Expand

    Amazing game, the story is really good, graphics are good, and music and sound are really impressive.
    It has some issues with optimization and some very weird character animations at times, but overall, it doesn't diminish the great experience of playing an "old school horror" type of game with new graphics and technology.
    Its free (included) with game pass subscription so it’s a huge plus.

    Despite clunky animations, repetitive gameplay and some technical issues with the Xbox Series X version, I completed The Medium twice. Its dual-reality design, art direction and brilliant soundtrack often made me stop to take in a view or relish the music. Its mature story and atmosphere reminiscent of Silent Hill helped a lot too. Without hiding where it comes from, it's an experience horror fans won't want to miss, no matter how short. The duality approach is interesting and has enormous potential. I hope that the Bloober Team will get to work on it again and develop it more in-depth.
