It's a strange thing to play this game. List the features of the game: open universe, space battles, terrestrial combat, diverse factions interacting, loads of different weapons, deep character customisation; it should be a great game.

But. At no point in the game am I actually having fun in the moment. For the first dozen hours, I am instead merely anticipating enjoyment, but it never comes. This is because the developers were so focussed on the big things I listed above that they forgot to make any of the constituent elements of those things interesting or fun.

The space fights devolve into trivial encounters in which one holds a button while following another ship, or they consist of a series of jousts. The ground combat is seriously like something out of the 90s, the AI is basic AF and the layout of the missions means that an interesting stealth approach is generally unfeasible.

The missions are structured in a way that leaves one simply fast travelling and waiting in loading screens, or even worse, following a cookie cutter npc as they walk incredibly slowly towards another npc. When the NPCs speak, it is with half arsed vocal performances delivering lines so boring that one learns mash the skip button within 5 minutes of playing.

Anyone who's played Star Citizen knows that one of the best things about that game is how seamless the transition between atmosphere and space is, the knowledge that you could actually fly 2km down to the surface and land your ship enriches the (broken) experience so much. The fact that Bethesda did not allow us to fly in atmosphere and land our ships and all that is baffling to me. They go to all this effort to make different planets and outer space, but don't actually link them in an interesting way. Because of this, each planet, and space itself, feels siloed when it should all feel connected and open.

Genuinely, honestly, the highlight of this game is the lockpicking. Finally someone has found a nice middle ground in difficulty for this age-old game mechanic.

Between the interest in this, Star Citizen and No Man's Sky, we know the market for a great space opera game is out there. No one seems quite able to pull it off.

One of the best games of all time. BGS took their already excellent formula and improved upon multiple aspects of it, and had a very smooth launch to boot. Inflated my score a bit to counteract all the butthurt Sony Ponies review bombing. Haven’t finished the game yet but I’d say this game is at least a 9-9.5 out of 10. Maybe higher but at least a 9.

The open world is filled with ugly looking ressources and wildlife, which can be hunted/gathered and scanned, anyone could build a better world with a map builder on any game, i even remember doing a better job at farcry2 or 3 (dont remember anymore), where the maps actually looked pretty.
So in all that boring nothingness, you get a few outposts/settlements/buildings, where you can loot and explore, guess what, opening the door will require to wait a few seconds for you to enter, its probably just a small loading screen. after entering it, you will get a whole lot of items you can loot, there comes the other thing which made me hate the gameplay, 135kg where i can store stuff, and its already full after like 5mins of exploring a building. so you either have to overload your companion or run back to your ship and store it there and come back later. but dont worry, thats not the only quality of life feature which is missing, the game also doesnt have a map (i mean a technology advanced enough for space travel but not maps), it also doesnt have a minimap.
the fasttravel system is complicated, you have to look at the location with your scanner and use fasttravel.

    - no normal fasttravel
    - no map
    - no minimap
    - super bland coloring / watching the game is enough to bore the sht out of you
    - boring introduction
    - boring and ugly world
    - the moment you start enjoying the exploration , your bag gets full

i for my part didnt enjoy it, i bought the preorder pack for over 100bucks, got a refund, played it on the gamepass and still didnt enjoy it and quit early on.
never gonna trust any of the gameplay reviews again
looks like bethesda is hoping that the modders fix their game, or they wanna implement features like maps, higher storage capacity with a paid dlc

Pretty boring so far (4 hours.) I'll change my review if that changes. This game needs a big dose of medicine from Dr. Nomansky.

This is MOST DEFINITELY a Gamepass Game. At least you'll be able to play Civ 6 & Monster Train & GREAT RPGs like Pillars of Eternity 2 & Dragon Age & New Vegas & Oblivion if you don't like this. Or No Man's Sky! Those are some good consolation prizes. And

Also note: this game may get a lot better over the years as fans fix it. It's not like BETHESDA will. They are the anti No Man's Sky shop. Todd Howard is too busy "working" on Starfield 3076.

There's so much in the game, so many possibilities, so much hidden history, so much going on. The factions are very well built.

I don't think it's a 10 game, but I gave it a 10 to contrast with the bias of bad ratings. I would give it an 8. I had a lot of fun, I think the stealth mechanics could have been a little better developed, as well as facial features in intense dialogues, small problems.
Exploration would be more fun if it weren't so randomized every time you land in some corner of a planet. They wanted to give the feeling of infinite possibilities but created an immense lack of interest in random exploration. That's the only point that made me take 2 points out of the game.

It Is the Game Engine That Is the First Building Block That Is the Determination Of How Great A Game Will Be Produced In A Great Game To Be Developed By the Game Engine!!! The Story I Have Gathered ONLY LASTS ON AVERAGE 20 HOURS, IM SORRY BUT AFTER 7 YEARS OF PRODUCTION AND YOU CAN ONLY MANAGE TO MAKE A STORY LAST FOR 20 HOURS IS EMBARRASSING WHOLLFULLY MISMANAGEMENT!!!! The Story Should Have Lasted At Least 100 Hours!!! I Never Understood In Game Development How You Can Create A Location and Yet That Location Would Not Be Part Of the Story,??? The Locations In A Game World Has To Be Made For the Story In Of Itself Not For the Sake Of Just To Be Made!!!! Why In the World Did Starfield Get Produced With 1000 Planets When Those 1000 Planets Do Not Have Any Purpose To Explore Them For There Is No Quests On Them To Do, I Would Have Rather Had Lets Say 200 Planets Handcrafted To Make As Part Of A Cohesive Story Not 1000 Planets With Nothing To Do On Them!!!! There was not much immersion in the game for me due to the main story and lame space travel, and the AI killed the remaining bit. First, the visuals really are XboxOne era, and level desing on the various habitats is painfully bland and uninspiring. And the planets are very barren and monotonous affairs indeed.
Combat, enemy AI and various other elements feel like a step backwards from Fallout 4.
But for me, the worst part are the stories.
Now in previous Bethesda games, the unique and original stories were what made me love them. Such fascinating stuff. But in Starfield, the stories feel very bland in comparison, and in many places, feel like they were ripped from Mass Effect and other scifi sources. So, not very original or unique.
Any good stuff? Well, character creator is very good, and there are plenty of interesting skills to choose from. Unfortunately not all of those skills have that much use in the game proper! So, this means that you are given a promise of a deep RPG with all those skills, but then you will actually be playing a very shallow looter-shooter.
Bugs? Sure. Lots of them. But what game does not have them at launch. But I can already see, even when patched up, the game will not be nearly as good as other Bethesda games. 6/10, and that because I like Bethesda.

I did not get spoiled by anything, did not read any hype review, I just wanted to play a good new Bethesda game - since they are so proud of the fact it's the first truly new IP in 25 years, I hoped they'd really deliver on it... since I started playing their games with Morrowind, I had some hopes they'd make it. Sadly they did not.

Sadly they did not.

    TL;DR:
They did a Fallout 76 on their "Space Skyrim" - OR: The Space Skyrim that never was. If you are a fan of Sci-Fi and "Open World" - which works in the strongest sense of the word in this game since the vastness the game simulates is humongous... however it feels almost like an empty shell when you get to explore. Much like No Man's Sky, it only gives the impression of being big and exciting, with great variations. The systems are a chore - even worse than Oblivions "use a Skill 100 times to advance in level" system, this game makes you work for even being able to Sneak, Lockpick and steer bigger space ships. It would all be acceptable if the grind wasn't that downright dull, if the Characters you meet in your first stretch of the journey weren't that kind of empty and one-dimensional-feeling and the Ship / Space mechanics weren't that "Elite Dangerous" kind of level.

This way, you get the worst out of 3 genres and all mashed into one humongous - albeit good-looking on Xbox X, game - on PC better prepare to have a huge graphics card budet that'd buy you two Xbox Series X likely and a year of Game Pass. Maybe that's what Microsoft/Beth wanted? Sell those Xboxes... it might work initially but boy, when the people get to playing this they just might be regretting that decision.

Bethesda seem to really love their "random number generator" engine - it drove many of their Elder Scrolls and the new Fallouts to new heights - but back then these games had a Soul infused in form of a major storyline, exciting characters to meet all across the Wastes or the vast action-filled mysterious world of Tamriel.

If they have the "whole of eternity" to work with, it seems the previous ingenuity of Bethesda seems to get dulled and stretched too far. This game has an inkling of the brilliance that was the first 5 hours of most any Elder Scrolls Game or Fallouts 3, New Vegas and 4 - but once the vacuum of Space sucks at your brain when you realize the first 5 hours of this Megahyped Game do not reach the old heights but are a downright borefest it's a bit sad.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

The frame rates are incredibly bad and this to me is simply unacceptable. The limitations of the engine are obvious and ruining the experience of what could have been a wonderful game.

The models of the in-game characters look like they came from a game made in the 2010s.

The worst part still remains the frame-rate issues especially during space battles where you would need to manoeuvre around obstacles and target enemy spaceships. Spinning the camera with these frame-rates simply disconnects you from the entire experience.

Oh, yeah, get ready for massive amounts of loading times…

That’s all I can say about this game - avoid it, unless you would like a comix-like experience on what could have been the RPG of this gen consoles.

Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have spent 19 hours playing this game on my Series S. I have not engaged with the shipbuilding or base building mechanic. I spent most of my time completing the main quest and think I have reached the final mission.

I will try to judge the game based on what it is, rather than what I wanted it to be.

**Spoilers ahead** Here are my thoughts:

    Story/main quest:
The game starts off as poorly as everyone says. You touch a spooky piece of metal and, immediately, someone shows up and gives you a ship. The robot on board is supposed to keep you from stealing the ship or heading off course. You fight a bunch of 'space pirates' and then you blast off. This introduction didn't bother me too much because it gets you into the game very quickly. It still isn't very good, though.

You join a group called Constellation which is seeking out these strange metal objects and associated 'xenostructures'. Most of the main missions follow one of two formulas after this:

1: Talk to guy on space station (which means watching the docking sequence and walking through the station) -> Fast travel to planet -> Look around until your scanner starts flickering -> Walk towards the 'interference (many times I did not need to use the scanner because the temple was clearly visible from my ship) -> Find a temple and enter it (they all look the same/similar) -> Float around the interior, floating into clusters of light until you power up the structure in the middle of the room -> absorb power- > Go back to your ship.

This essentially grants you the shouts from Skyrim and each temple follows this formula. That's it. No challenge or puzzle. Literally just walking from your ship to a temple (following your scanner if you can't see it already) and floating into clusters of light. It's repetitive and not engaging.

2: Go to a base somewhere, fight pirates, robots, or another human faction and find the 'Artefact'. There are variations of this, with later versions having a light puzzle element, but all are fundamentally the same. This quest design makes up a majority of the main quest and is, quite frankly, insipid.

The story itself did become more interesting abut halfway through when the 'Starborn' reveal themselves. The spooky pieces of metal that you have been collecting turn out to be a way to access 'Unity', something that grants people incredible power and the ability to hop between dimensions. The more times a 'Starborn' completes this journey, by collecting the artefacts, the more powerful they become.

Overall, the main quest and search for powers has been uninteresting and very repetitive. People say the side quests are better. But shouldn't the main quest be one of the most compelling parts of the game? It doesn't make me want to continue with the game.

    General gameplay:
The gameplay is very repetitive. I spent most of my time either running between objectives, talking to npcs, fast traveling, or shooting.

The shooting is ok. most enemies are bullet sponges and don't have any unique powers. The harder enemies usually just have more shields or health, higher numbers. Most of the time, I would unload a clip into an enemy and just run up to them and punch them to finish them off. It was actually quicker to do that most of the time.

That brings me onto the enemy AI. It is terrible, absolutely awful. One mission made me kill a bunch of space pirates, each with their own marker, and one of them ran in the opposite direction. They weren't fleeing; the AI is just broken. Similarly, the enemies never tried to flank me or do any interesting manoeuvres.

Ship combat is equally as bad and seems to just rely on your numbers being higher than the enemy's, which is not inherently bad. But there is no skill involved. A boss in Elden Ring can be defeated if you are at a low level if you have skill. Levelling makes the fight easier. This is not how it works in Starfield.

    Bugs and performance:
A few times characters would not appear during dialogue or would be facing the wrong way. The game crashed once when the menu failed to load, and I had to reload when my character got stuck talking to the floor and couldn't move (dialogue was triggered with a character below me). Sometimes my weapons became unresponsive. Switching to a different one fixed that. Also, sometimes the reticle flashes red like there is an enemy when there is nothing.

Overall, the game is perfectly mediocre. There are no high highs or low lows that make the game feel uneven and boring at times. The game is relatively consistent, probably because the loop for every main mission is almost exactly the same. I wouldn't say anything in this is ambitious or even new. It's full of mechanics and systems that we have seen before and seen done better.

I would also like to say that people should not be relying on mods to make this game better. It's literally a company benefitting from unpaid labour to make their own product better.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game isn’t bad, it sure starts off slow, like boringly slow to the point where i was considering closing the game. But then it picked up and writhing like a mission it went from being too boring and bleak to be actually really fun. I have to admit, starfield fails to keep me at the edge of my seat but at the times where i am, it’s actually amazing. The first mission for the UC (space police) literally threw me into a horror film that I genuinely loved. Having that said the game play is good. It’s not amazing but it’s something i like playing. On the other hand. Starfield does have a few faults. For example the lack of vehicles to move is atrocious. I could literally be walking for a full 5 minutes to reach an area just to decide i want to go back. I don't understand why this wasn't added in, it defiantly should be in a later patch or dlc. As for the guns and ammo drops it’s kind of annoying but still ok. Overall this a good game and i definitely recommend it for players with game pass. While others that don’t have game pass, i recommend waiting. Because the game at times make me feel it’s worth it, and times i feel like it’s not. That’s why in my opinion id give it a 7-8 because although it’s good it doesn’t compete with other first party games from other studios or companies. Because at the end of the day you have to weigh the different options out it’s not the same but it is good. I’m still not done with the game. Once I’m done with the game ill be sure to add another post game review. Expand

It's just going to take time to get there. For instance, the game is optimised to run smoothly on a RTX4080 and that's from the horse's mouth. That card accounts for like 0.53% of users on steam. So, for the vast majority of players the game looks and feels terrible to play.

There is this huge gap between those that have the hardware to run the game and those that don't and as a game development company. Bethesda should be aware of this. The completely out of touch comment of, this is a next gen title when for most people the game looks and feels like a PS3 title. Is sadly going to mean lower scores on meta critic.

If reviewers were honest about the game, they would review the game on a 3060. Which is the top ish part of the bell curve for gpu performance on steam. If your game does not look and feel fantastic to play on a 3060. Ur going to have a bad day in the user review section of Metacritic.

The game is hindered by too many loading screens which breaks the flow of freedom, which is integral to a Bethesda game. I cannot help but feel it would have benefitted from being less ambitious. Nobody needs a "1000" planets, they could have populated far few and the experience would be better. With the way the game is designed there is alot of stopping and starting due to this. Most planets will appear the same and lack diversity, no cultural significance is gained from venturing to different solar systems, the universe is universal. What you experience is quite bland and the environments appear sterile without any significant character. The game looks great and is optimised well for the xbox series x where I've only had a couple of crashes in my 30 hour play through. The bland fallout in space, fast travel simulator isn't what I was expecting.

-The character creator is the best ive ever seen
-Shipbuilding and Base Building is fun and allows For a different experience to be had when wanting to take a break from the action..
    - The Main Story and the Larger Side Stories are some of the best and most well written Bethesda quests in their history….

Cons: - NPCs can feel a bit bland at times
-Graphically this game isnt bad but they are sometimes some very washed out texture or just bad pop ins.
    -Facial animations sometimes looks bad.
    - This game is very very heavy. This can be a pro or a con, but this game can feel very overwhelming at times, and at one specific point if you dont prepare yourself U can feel as if everything you have done was wasted.

OVERALL: The pros heavily outweigh the cons, This game is an easy 8.5/10, If you love RPGs, or BGS games, then the amount of choices, customizations, open endedness of the world makes it all worth investing time into this game…IJust take your time with it, its not a slow burn, but because of the size and scope you can easily become overwhelmed. But overall this game is an Easy GOTY nominee.

the main quest line has to be the most uninspiring dull, tedious and horrendously written story i've played yet.. its mostly go here, talk to them, go there, load load load, use menu to travel, load, shoot, talk, sneak, shoot, talk, load, fetch. most of the main story line is talking to people, and then delving into copy and pasted caves and dungeons etc to get the artificats. now.. there are a few great quests thrown in the main story, but by the time it picks up, its over.. theres no expert delivery, leaving you feel impacted by its story, world, characters or events.. theres minimal impact. the dialogue gets so tediously boring, you end up skipping alot of the filler content.. and the main story for 90% of it bored the living life out of me, with how tediously boring it was, paired with the insanely uninspiring and tediously annoying "exploration" system they have.. so even if one quest immersed you into its world, you're then taken straight back out of it, when your only means to travel is through menus and load screens. it doesnt exactly sound like unparrelled freedom and exploration, and is an insane set back in many ways in comparison to their other games. WOW is over 20 years old and you can seemlessly travel its map. this has no excuse. i had hoped the story would pick up and deliver a blow that made the tedious journey worth my time, but by the time i started to feel the build up, it was over with an anti climatic ending.. and a over hyped new game plus that had plenty of promise and potential to its jaw dropping plot twists, but ultimately fell flat as it leads nowhere at all to make any significant difference to your story, other than a few dialogue changes, but plopping you back into its dull world, and terrible story.. at first you have a chance to skip the story in NG+, and at first the new lines of dialogue is fresh.. but it leads nowhere. will i be able to find my old companions in this new world? nah. its a novelty.

the combat is nothing to shout home about, though its not the worst. its very much fallout 4 on steroids, a lil bit smoother than FO4, and a lil more fluent. the choice of weapons have an abundance of choices to choose from, to suit your gameplay style. although their melee system is horribly bad and out dated, with no improvements from their previous games at all.

the sidequest is where this game shines, and unfortunately so, as if your side content over shadows your main.. something is wrong.. however, the side content very much out shined the main story, and engages you in quests that very much feel quality wise, 10 folds better than the 7th grade written main plots. i will keep this part short, as i dont want to spoil anything. but get arrested, that quest is one of theee best, regardless on where you choose to branch.

summary: this game couldve been a genre defining GOTY exclusive, but has ultimately been laid flat, with the countless words being sprung out of petes mouth, that ultimately mis communicated somewhere along the way of what to expect with this game. is this game bad? no.. depends. if youre looking for an immersive flight exploration game, AVOID THIS. if you're looking for fallout in space without much ship exploration manually done.. and you can bare loading screen after loading screen, then this is for you. ive played over 50 hours to form this opinion, and it just aint what we were told it would be. too much promises, and very little delivery, its a beautiful game, and one of the smoother BGS's experiences to date, however with a uninspiring main story, and tedious exploration system that makes starfield fall flat on its face. once youve finished the game once, after 50 hours i feel very little urge to jump back on, instead im going back to star citizen and elite dangerous.. i hope with updates, mods, and the expansion, alot of these issues are resolved. but rn, id say wait for a sale.

That doesn’t work when you have a controller in your hands for a interactive experience. The beginning of this game isn’t compelling. It’s going to take a few hours of play to get things really going. This also is not No Man’s Sky. This needs to be stressed because exploration is not what this game is about. There’s a lot of walking and no vehicles to get around when you go off the beaten path. This is a Bethesda game. So you’re getting a decent story here. The dialogue isn’t the best. Conversations are meh. That’s not saying anything bad about the voice actors. But I’ve been playing Baldur’s Gate 3, and going through Cyberpunk 2077 again. The difference I feel is that out of these three, two of these games were trying to prove something. One of them rested on their laurels because they’re Bethesda and they got it like that. It’s a story you will like. It has characters you will like. But you’ve experienced better. Graphics and visuals are nice. Not next gen nice though. Maybe it’s because I’m streaming on Xcloud on my MacBook Pro, but walking and running feels like my character is out training, and my companion is behind them adding resistance with a resistance band. Maybe it’s a streaming and bandwidth thing. Visually this game looks like it could have come out 7 to 10 years ago. Again maybe that’s because I’m streaming. If I’m being honest, if someone said this was a Fallout 4 DLC expansion, set even further in the future, I would believe it. This doesn’t look that much better than Fallout 4. Characters look stiff in the traditional Bethesda way. Which is fine, but I thought Bethesda would approach the way they presented they stories in a new way. At least some different camera angels when you’re in conversation. They’re just stiff. It kills the immersion for me 100 times more than any frame rate issues. Being a pirate is so much fun. I’ve killed so many people, pillaged the hell out of them and stolen their ships. If you want to have fun, be bad. Ship building and customizing them is also fun. This is what I have the least to say about because it’s where I’m enjoying my experience with this game the most. That does bring me to flying the ship. Maybe I’m crazy, but the ship is where it feels like they were trying to make a space sim RPG. Because the way you can adjust various power levels is unique. It just doesn’t really fit with the rest of the game for me. It’s like that’s where the innovation ran into a bottleneck. I also have to mention loading screens. The loading screens. OMG the loading screens. Walk into a building. Loading screen. Walk into a cave. Loading screen. Walk up the ramp of your ship. Loading screen. The game is not seamless. The loading screens are an annoyance. It feels like someone said, “Look, we aren’t Star Citizen that’s in open beta for 10 years. This game has to come out and this is the time limit you have.” And with that this doesn’t feel like something that has been in development for 20 years. This could have come out when Fallout 4 did, because there’s nothing that makes this better or worse than any Mass Effect or Star Wars the Old Republic. Wait. Mass Effect has ground transportation so you’re not walking endlessly. Which is why I consider this just a good basic RPG. One that is especially great for gamers who are new to the genre, or you want a good casual RPG experience. I really wish I could give this more than a 7. Even though I’m having a good enough time, I’m also soldiering through it. I also can’t call this a next gen game. I want to be a Bethesda cheerleader. I really wanted to love this game. I wanted this to be the game that makes me want to buy an Xbox, instead of being content streaming this and churning my Game Pass subscription. I do have to say this should definitely be streamed first and consider that a demo before you pay full price. Expand

Even though this is the case, if you like No Mans Sky, you will love Starfield, but if you don't like No Mans Sky, you will not like Starfield. Whatever it is, I either recommend this game or not.

    Cons:
    1) Low, medium, high, ultra settings all look very similar.
    2) Excessive amount of loadings.
    3) Feel like a 10 years old game.

    Pros:
    1) It's free with Game Pass.

I'm not here to talk thrash about the game, it has his own good moments, but with the actual standards of videogame industry, after all these years, claiming Goty etc, game came out with no settings, not even brightness control, 30 fps unstable, graphic is simply broken in some part, the city have tree without the slightest animation, npc with eye popping, global inexistent lighting. But the thing that is the most annoying is that space travel or the joy of moving in space is nonexistent, was better on mass effect or even in freelancer, and they claim 30 fps is because the in game graphic.is awesome, ok graphic is not everything. In fact the game lack in so mant different ways that I would rate it a 7 BUT, then why sometimes it's good and sometimes is bad? There are litterally part of the game that lack love and cure from the developers, we are in the age of incredible visuals like Horizon, we have tears of the kingdom running on a switch, bg3 state of the art... and they come out after years and years with a game that looks so old,bad optimized and lacking of content.
    I mean real content
Is that the killer app after all this year? Simply unacceptable

A video game with facial animations from two generations ago. It makes it not immersive at all.

It's a big game, but starts way too slowly, and may never get interesting.

It is true that you'll find a good number of barren wastelands with little to do other than extracting some resources and take off to more interesting places, but again it really depends on how you want to play. There's so much to do, so many systems and abilities to explore, missions to complete, spaceships to loot, and species to catalogue, that I honestly don't think there's anybody who thinks that exploring every square meter of this universe is the better way to enjoy Starfield.

While it has weak spots and doesn’t push many boundaries, Starfield is still an excellent RPG experience. Bethesda has once again mastered the things it built its reputation on – world building, quest design, and deep customization. However, it’s found new things to excel at too, with exciting combat and a novel implementation of New Game Plus.
