Having an absolute blast with this game. It's amazing to play a 3D sonic game with the quality of the Dreamcast titles, and possibly better. Technically it runs well on SRS X, I am sure Sega will apply a little more polish in future updates, but I am super happy with this game. Good work Sega.

Sonic Frontiers is a different game, with its technical deficiencies, but with a fresh proposal to the franchise and that at first may feel strange, but nevertheless, it is a game that catches you and sows what could be the future of the franchise.

I am blown away, I expected the open world parts and combat to be the most jank part of Sonic Frontiers but it controls remarkably well. This is gonna be a really fun era for the hedgehog if they fully utilize this control set in later games. The mood, writing, and soundtrack are phenomenal I have been smiling non stop since I started playing.

The music in this game is incredible and it's the best music in the entire franchise!

The Super Sonic fights against the Titans were amazing and some of the best fights in a video game!

Most of them were actually brand new rather than old level design. The story is definitely one of the more mature Sonic stories and I even got teary eye at a few cutscenes. I’m probably just sensitive LOL. The Super Sonic fights althoufh sometimes janky. The music makes up for it. It sounds like devil may cry and metal gear solid music. The game might have some pop in issues, cutscene lip syncing issues, a “not so good” final boss and a few other nitpicks. But I still believe this may be the BEST 3D Sonic Game. I went into this game highly optimistic, unlike most I really loved alot of the pre-release content and was actively excited to play the game. (I'm not justifying the awful marketing at the beginning, I just liked what I saw)

I'm so happy to say the game exceeded my expectations. The Gameplay has finally found itself as the founding father of a formula I expect Sonic Team to use for years to come. Sonic is fast, extremely fast, but he controls fantastically. The controls are responsive, easy to use, everything blends together wonderfully and you can even set a slider to determine how you want Sonic to play. It's just a joy to play. The Gameplay loop sounds bland on paper: find token, talk to friends, defeat boss, enter portal, get keys, unlock chaos emeralds and you can guess what comes after that. Sonic Frontiers is just so much fun, that loop couldn't be more satisfying. I was genuinely struggling to put the game down, I myself put in 10 10 hours in the first day alone and I was only at the third island. For reference, it took me just over 3 hours to beat all of Sonic Forces. I hadn't even beaten the first island in that time. There's so much content here and it's all superb.

For those thinking this may be another Colours or Generations with good Gameplay but a weak cringy story, fear not. Ian Flynn absolutely understands what makes Sonic Sonic. His character hasn't been this good since Black Knight. Roger provides a new approach to Sonic here, but it absolutely suits the tone of the game in a way that gets better and better the longer it goes on. Everyone else in the game is also spot on, with a highlight coming from new-comer Sage who I can see becoming a fan-favourite for plenty of years to come. The story is engaging, full of engaging lore and references that will genuinely catch you off guard in the best way possible.

The game isn't perfect, plenty of pop-in and jank, but this isn't a review that is intended to focus on it's negative areas. They are absolutely there and by all means, the execution of the ideas in the game could have certainly been better, but assessing the core ideas and philosophies established in this game makes one thing very clear: the effort and passion in Sonic Team has shined through here. If you're wondering if this marks a sign for good things to come in Sonic's 3D future, my answer is an absolute yes. I highly recommend it; it really is what we've been waiting for.

Sonic Frontiers feels like a desperate breath of fresh air into the series.

It is not perfect by any means - cyberspace levels are hit or miss and some are genuinely AWFUL to go through and S rank (3-7 lmao), pop in is an issue though it's not a big deal to me, and there are a few minor bugs that I have encountered only twice in my 15 hours of playtime so far. However, everything else outshines it. The story is great with the help of Ian Flynn, known for the Sonic IDW comics. The voice acting is okay for the most part, Amy's in particular is wonderful. Character interactions are great and feel so much better than what we got in the last decade.

Exploring the open world is genuinely great. I always find myself exploring to see what else there is to find instead of going to the main goal. Last night, I said I'd only play for another hour. Before I knew it, I had played for 8. (Also I do not understand the complaints about the world feeling "empty", I think stuff being spaced out is necessary given how fast Sonic goes.)

But more or less, this game leaves a wonderful foundation for follow-ups. I cannot wait to see what the Sonic series brings in the future.

P.S. The soundtrack is FIRE and they got Kellin Quinn from Sleeping with Sirens on it. 100/10 banger OST.

The storyline, dialog, and cinematics I have to admit very well done though.

To me, Sonic Adventure for the Dreamcast will always be top-tier. The gameplay in Frontiers is frustrating at times simply because of all the combinations of attacks and moves. The trainer is okay to learn the attacks but it just throws you in. I died many times battling the island bosses simply because there is no explanation on how to go about the quick-time reactions.

Another issue is the locked camera, there are times I needed to look at the stages to see if I missed a ring or item. I can't turn around the camera to look back. Plus, batting the bosses also proved difficult because of the camera getting either getting up close to Sonic or so far away you can't see where you are at.

The stages you go through are all the same type, just different arrangments, all based on stages that have been used in the past (Green Hill, Chemical Planet, Sky Sanctuary, City Escape) All 'nostalgic' levels, nothing original other than the music for those stages.

I loved previous Sonic titles because it was simple and enjoyable (for the most part). Frontiers could have worked if it was a new franchise maybe, but to take the Sonic franchise (to me) and make it seem more RPG-ish to nearly grind for items for Sonic to gain new abilities and attacks isn't what a Sonic game is about IMO.

I get that many others love the game. I believe that to be more among the lines of 'Honey Moon' phase, great at first but soon the facts start to settle in once all fan fair dies out, Frontiers will eventually show its flaws. Simply put, Sonic Frontiers is a very complex game for even a veteran Sonic gamer like myself and too complex for its own good.

The only saving grace in this game is the storyline (thanks in part to Ian Flynn), dialog, and cinematics as I said before.

Sonic Frontiers is a beautiful step forward for the blue blur and his friends. The combat is varied and satisfying, the story is mysterious and emotional, the voice acting is new while still feeling familiar, and the soundtrack is glorious, whether it's the soft violins of Kronos Island, the EDM music for Cyberspace, or the heavy metal for when you're up against the Titans! In Sonic Frontiers, it's up to you to save Sonic's friends and rescue them from cyberspace, all while trying to overpower the new threats that await. Unlike past Sonic games where you'd speed through levels, Frontiers takes a new approach: Open Zone, and it really pays off! As for the more linear reach the goal levels, they're a part of the new Cyberspace levels. While it's a little hard to get a hold of the, admittedly clunky controls, once you do you'll be S-ranking Cyberspace levels at the fastest speeds possible! Visually, the game looks fairly average, however you can still capture some gorgeous scenery and beautiful views from the Starfall Islands. There are a few gripes I have here and there with this game, but it doesn't knock any points, and they're more nitpicks than anything.

Overall, Sonic Frontiers is a wonderfully crafted game by SEGA and Sonic Team, and is the best 3D Sonic game since Sonic Generations! From its fun and unique combat, to the beautifully designed open zones, to its fast paced Cyberspace stages, to its incredible story, its music, and its beautiful visuals, Sonic Frontiers is worth your time and is a very thrilling game!

The game throws a constant dopamine rush that lasts from begging to end. The new open zone format fits the sonic play style perfectly and the traditional levels, even though less challenging than usual are fast and enjoyable experiences.

Sonic Frontiers arrives at the right formula for a Sonic game, no other game in the market offers the sheer speed and movement capabilities that Sonic Frontiers does. Collecting items and doing puzzles doesn't feel like a chore or a checklist, it serves instead as the perfect excuse to traverse the open zone world with Sonic. The combat also fits Sonic well and is integrated in a way that makes perfect sense for the play style of Sonic Frontiers. Sonic's new abilities are varied and fun, the downside is that combat is hardly a challenge, but it makes sense to not shift the main focus of a Sonic game to combat and combos.

Sonic Frontiers deserves to be played without preconceived ideas. It can offer fun in ways that no other game other than a Sonic game is capable of. It offers tremendous replayability. The music alongside the open zone exploration can be as relaxing as a good jazz playlist and the highs of the game keep asking to be experienced again

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I’ve been a sonic fan for as long as I can remember and can proudly say that this game has brought sonic back into the mainstream.
I haven’t completed the game as of now but have had over 10 hours on the game.
This game has wonderful story on par with SA2 and SA1’s story in terms of seriousness and quality. This game is the 1st sonic game in a long time to make me feel a strong emotion with the death of the two kocos and strong excitement in tense moments like the 1st super sonic fight. As well as story the gameplay holds up as well; the cyberspace is a bit disappointing but still very enjoyable and they don’t take up a lot of your time - unless you’re trying to S rank them all. The combat is amazing and some of the best combat I’ve seen sonic preform from the sonic boom to the wild rush, it’s all wonderful! The only complaint I really have is the size of the skill tree, but that’s it. This game swiftly placed itself as my fifth favourite sonic game and in my top ten games of all time!

And it is the first one that I’ve really enjoyed and looked forward to returning to since then, though Sonic Generations comes close. There are rough spots to be sure. Pop up can be a bit much at times and some of the battles frustrating due to camera issues, but overall the positives WAY outpace the negatives. There is an almost zen feeling to the “open world “ and the “cyber” levels add the needed excitement spike. Often repeated tip, but go to settings and switch to the Performance mode if your system allows. You’ll not really notice the resolution change, but the jump from 30fps to 60 is huge! This is a great mix of speed and exploration and something I am very excited to see the future of. If you enjoy the Sonic franchise, this is well worth a look! Expand

The rails are reminiscent of Sonic Adventure (and that FFX cinematic, only here you control them and don't just watch). Very well managed loading times. Giant and menacing enemies. We have surprise guests

    The bad:
It has an excess of Pop up and they do not implement fog to hide it. The novelty of the large area to explore ends soon. Enemies not very inspired (that if the generic robots have always been since the beginning of the saga). Sonic's bad reputation in 3D will drive many away. The fishing mini-game we already have many fishing mini-games.

    Lo Meh!:
It's a great nod to the movie Sonic 2

Can't help but feel like there's a lot of small inconveniences that bog down the final product of Sonic Frontiers. For game that has had the longest production time to date of any Sonic game, and the lates entry, it doesn't really look like it stands up graphically to newer games.

Can't help but feel like there's a lot of small inconveniences that bog down the final product of Sonic Frontiers. For game that has had the longest production time to date of any Sonic game, and the lates entry, it doesn't really look like it stands up graphically to newer games.

The models being used for Sonic and friends have also aged, since they've been exactly the same since Sonic Unleashed with nary a change. And the animation has hardly improved since the likes of Forces.

That said, I like the overall atmosphere and an honest attempt at a Triple A title from the Sonic franchise. It tries to change the gameplay up, and because of that it feels refreshing. Not to mention, there are finally decent call backs and nods to previous 3d Sonic games. Continuity in my Sonic game, finally?

I won't rag on the game for what it doesn't have. I still long for Spindash to make a return to a 3d title, and be as good as it was in Sonic Adventure 1. So I will only talk about what's on offer. There is something similar to the spindash in the game, call dropdash. More of a holdover from the recent 2d Sonic titles than anything though. Still, glad to see it in the game, even if it's a little hard to control in comparison to the spindash of the past.

Can't say I enjoy the combat that much, and there's a huge pause whenever Sonic collides with enemies. So I would describe the combat as incredibly stiff. Not to mention, when Sonic gets hit there are almost nary any recovery frames to escape from death. I prefer my combat games to have super smooth action, something akin to Devil May Cry, if at all possible. But Sonic's combat isn't really that varied or sophisticated for that. Not to mention, the camera goes all over the place whenever you do anything than mash X in combat, which can be disorienting.

I liked Big's fishing mini game, though I wish it were more involved and not as simple as it is. It's still a chill thing to dabble into though. And the catches can be hilarious.

Dislike being trapped in 2d sections in the overworld. It can really put a stop to whatever you're trying to do if you aren't engaging in it intentionally, and just trying to get somewhere else on the map. Speaking of, there is way too much rail grinding in my opinion. Would like more variety when it comes to traversal.

Multiple times I've clipped through walls that I'm running over, mainly when it comes to boss fights and trying to run up their arms.

Speaking of running, there's physics in Frontiers, but they're not really that good. No matter how fast Sonic goes, whenever he runs pass a steep decline you can assume that Sonic's feet will default to being magnetized to the ground. It can be incredibly jarring to run toward the edge of a cliff only to see him very suddenly drop straight down. You can mess with the speed of Sonic's on the ground and when boosting in the settings of the game. But I choose not to mess with those, since I believe that the original settings are usually what the creators intended the game to be. And I'd say I was correct too, because as I've seen with others gameplay, turning the boost all the way up makes the dropdash basically worthless in all aspects except for getting up normally unclimbable steep inclines. Not to mention, once you get back into Cyberspace levels, Sonic's speed settings and controls go back to default, which, as far as I'm concerned, shows that default is how Frontiers is intended to be played it.

The Pinball mini game on Chaos Island is a nightmare to deal with. Either the ball is too big, the board is too small, or both. Not to mention the physics for pinball just straight isn't there, and every time the ball comes into contact with anything their will be a lightshow that makes it extremely hard to keep track of where the ball even is.

Finally, there's really nothing to do once you've finished the game. There are no leaderboards for Cyberspace levels, or high scores, or even a reason to keep doing the Big's fishing mini game once you've leveled up your attributes to Max. So, once you've finished the game, that's it. There's nothing else to do except explore and look around, but there's really not much to look at other than the rail cluttered horizon.

All in all, I'd say Frontiers is a good direction. Feels more like a proof of concept than a fully realized game at times though. And Sonic Team... please bring back the spindash. I miss that so much. Or at least give the dropdash proper ball mechanics. Or better yet, both!

Maybe now Sonic Team will give some other Sonic characters their own gameplay or game?

Die Sprachausgabe ist ganz okay, das hereinploppen von Objekten ist unschön und die Texturen sind teilweise auch deutlich verwaschen. The first Island is an amazing way to introduce you to the mechanics and is capped of with some of the most hype boss fights I've played since MGR! The second Island is a nice change of pace with a fair rise in difficulty as you complete more of the same challenges to get enough of the MacGuffins needed to get to the end of the island.

The reason why this is only a 9 is because of the third island which while fun, was extremely tedious but still worth every moment. The 4th and 5th island seems to show a bit of time constraint because they look amd feel very similar to the first. So around the end the looks were very repetitive. Plus that pop in is uust god awful but still. All in all the best sonic game since Unleashed. ITS THAT GOOD

First Titan boss: a little underwhelming, just a button smash which I failed, I realized where I had gone wrong and will get back to it later, I guess. All you need is to smash the buttons and do a couple of combos, it seems a bit of a boring boss to be honest. I still have 3 islands to do but I have a good feeling my opinion won't change.

The gameplay, music, bosses and open world design are great, and the plot is the most interesting one since Sonic Unleashed, and also the estetic of the open zones remembered me playing Sonic Adventure and Unleashed.
It lacks on the final boss, which is dissapointing, and sometimes upgrading the habilities tends to be really easy when you find out that big the cat and the cyloop give you skill points. And sometimes the cyberspce phisics tends to be weird to control, but you can get used to.

Characters and the relationships between them are well-developed, especially in interactions where the plot progresses.

Overall, Sonic Frontiers is a great game and a celebratory milestone as Sonic has entered a new phase.

Sonic Frontiers is a really fun Game. It makes you feel like Sonic, IGN would say that. The Combat is fun, the Speed is very fast at the end of the game, Story is very good, and Open Zones are alright. The Pop In is a big problem, and some missions on the Open Zones are very borng. But Sonic Frontiers is a great step in the future of Sonics Gameplay!

THIS IS THE BEST SONIC GAME IN SONIC SERIES!! The open world design is far great! And bosses is pretty good! And cyberspace...is not that bad but it's fun as hell if you speedrun! And this is my top 5! 10/10.

Sonic Frontiers, while not perfect, manages to successfully transition the blue blur to an open ended experience while keeping it's identity intact. While visual variety could be a little higher, specially in the Cyberspace levels, the game offers decent enough variety and looks beautiful all the way trough (just be prepared to deal with a bit of pop in of some assets). The most importantSonic Frontiers, while not perfect, manages to successfully transition the blue blur to an open ended experience while keeping it's identity intact. While visual variety could be a little higher, specially in the Cyberspace levels, the game offers decent enough variety and looks beautiful all the way trough (just be prepared to deal with a bit of pop in of some assets). The most important part, the control of Sonic, is spot on, Sonic has never controlled better in high speed while still being very controllable in more slow, platform heavy scenarios. Traversing the Open Zone is a thrilling treat and despite the repetitious game loop trough the game it never manages to become tedious as you speed trough challenge after challenge. Combat is simple at the surface but has enough dept to keep it interesting and refreshing, it gives emphasis on Sonic's speed and the varied enemy selection, each needing different strategies to tackle, keeps it fresh all the way trough. Bosses are a highlight and will get you hearth pumping. Simply put, the game is very fun. In terms of music, this is an area where the game excels. From the calm open zone tracks, to the energetic cyberspace tracks and the outright phenomenal boss themes, this is easily one of the best OSTs a Sonic game has ever received. Story is more somber and mysterious this time around as Sonic and friends try to unravel the mysterious story of the starfall islands and the fate of it's residents, it's guaranteed to keep you interested at the very least. Best part, however, is how Sonic and friends are portrayed, their character interactions are bound to make long time fans have a dumb smile as they play out, paired with many references and call backs to the earlier sonic adventures makes this one sweet treat for long time fans specially. This game is a great foundation and a good sign for things to come in the future for our fast blue friend. Sonic is back! Expand

Clearly this is one of the best sonic games. The sonic team has finally found the formula for Sonic 3D.
It is not a 10 for technical problems (popping), this bothers a bit when playing. If they had solved this problem the game would be a 10.
The best of the game? in my opinion the experience when playing with SUPER SONIC.
I love you SEGA and Sonic TEAM

Some of the negative critic reviews are questionable after playing. The graphics are great and the gameplay loop is insanely addictive and rewarding. The story is grown up and interesting though it feels a bit disconnected as it can have long gaps between short story videos depending on how you’re playing.

I spent a lot of my time with Sonic Frontiers having a ton of fun, even if there were just as many moments where I was frustrated and ready to be done with it. This isn’t a great game, but it’s one that should satisfy Sonic fans desperate for an interesting game starring their favorite blue blur, and for the first time in a long time, it feels like the series may have a sense of direction. There’s still work to be done to make it more than that, but this is a big step in the right direction.

Big,fun, impressive at times, a little rough around the edges maybe, but Sonic: Frontiers is a step in the right direction for Sega and the beloved blue blur.

Sonic Frontiers is a fascinating move into open world for the Sonic franchise. It's frequently flawed, and doesn't always match the heights of Sonic's best games. But the fact that it occasionally does reach those highs, while offering a totally new experience, is pretty impressive, and leaves Sonic Team with a strong foundation to improve upon.
