Blizzard knows what they want to make this game great, but have no idea how to do so. Their philosophy and actual implementation are worlds a parts.

Season 1 is terrible, you don't feel that you are significantly stronger than in the eternal realm. Will wait a few seasons and then see if they can turn it around.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game is incomplete in my opinion. The endgame is boring and has almost nothing to do. We don't have any ranking system. The game has too few classes and the developers aren't worried with the balance of them. The inventory interface is terrible, there are missing many slots compared the real need of players and we need some kind of character exclusive storage chest for each character. The first season released content is a joke. The PvP area of the game is dead and they didn't release any new skins for it on season one. In summary we can't accept to pay a expansive price in a game and they release this kind of content as if the game were a beta test... because that's what it seems. Expand

We will not be developing an endgame, we will just nerf the classes and reduce the experience gained. And we will also sell the battle pass without confirmation.
Oh yes, we will also change the balance in each patch.
It's not an AAA game, it's a beta test for 70 bucks.
All I can say is "Blizzard, play this **** yourself" :)

    Not so Good
    - Dungeons, cellars and areas feel repetitive
    - Vast numbers of sub-quests are utterly meaningless, with dialogue you don't want to read or hear
    - World scales to character, so progression doesn't mean much except new powers to play with
    - Combat is pretty spammy and repetitive, with no real skill curve
    - Boss fights are repetitive and unmemorable

This game and Elden Ring are separated by a couple of percent near the top of the rankings, but Elden Ring is a masterpiece. This is aesthetically pleasing but ultimately a tedious dopamine farm you'll want to move on from.

This game has already seen a dip in population. If they do nothing. It will become a dead game. They admit problems in their developer streams. Then don’t actually fix it and change the subject. The patch today was a steaming pile. I think most people would agree with that. Nerfs across the board never sit well with gamers, especially in ARPG's. But I don't think they understand how "on the fence" most people already were.

As more and more people reached the end game and realized how truly lacking in depth this game really is, the tone amongst Reddit, Twitter, Discord, and Forums started to shift. That was two weeks ago.

The fact is, people are getting bored. This is an ACTION RPG with slow-paced action. It's a LOOT hunter with boring loot. This is an MMO with no social aspects. A dungeon crawler that feels more like a game of fetching the stones and putting them on the pedestals.

The cracks are starting to show in the end game, and people feel like we're playing a paid Beta, you decide now is the time to drop a patch that **** on every build. What better way to push everyone over the edge than to nerf everything?

    Damage? NERF
    Defense? NERF
    Cooldown? NERF
    XP? NERF
    Power Leveling? NERF
    Helltide? NERF

Sure, some builds needed to be fixed, but you didn't have to completely gut entire classes while you were at it. But the nerfs are not even the point of this post. I don't even care about them. I'll adapt and overcome, I'm not afraid of a challenge. But this patch made me really think, why play season 1 at all? You didn't address a single one of the NUMEROUS valid complaints about this game.

6 new uniques? If you think adding 6 new unique items for every 3 month season is an acceptable pace to bring some depth to the sorely lacking itemization in this game, I might as well not play until season 30.

No leaderboards? No in-game trading with an option for self-found mode? No paragon board reset? No Occultist changes? (Cost or listing possible outcomes) No group finder? No stash tabs?

Nothing, in fact. Not a single thing to shine a bit of light on this **** sandwich. You made the game slower. Mobs take longer to kill, and yield less xp, and we're now gated to lower world tiers until the "recommended" (now mandatory) levels of 50 for WT3 and 70 for WT4.

So on Thursday, we're expected to start over, but this time it's all slower, less fun, time & experience gated. And all to get to the end and realize what an unfinished and lacking game this really is. Again. Still.

Maybe if you spend less time trying to "balance" a SINGLE PLAYER PVE GAME WHERE NOBODY CARES ABOUT BALANCE, and more time adding things that are actually fun and immersive, you might sell more battle passes and cosmetics.

    What an absolute joke.

This has been the worst gaming experience I have played in my 17 years of gaming. Unfinished game. Blizzard decided to nerf everything because players were completing the campaign and material too quickly. No effort to improve other classes or weak builds, just nerfing skills and items. You wake up and your character does 40% of the damage you used to, what a joke. I would steer away and look for games such as baldur's gate 3.

Post patch, this game basically sets you back a significant portion. I've played a lot of this game, after their nerf patch on everything I feel like instead of level 95 I went back to level 80. They've compensated for nothing and I currently don't have any desire to play season 1 after playing 4-5hrs a day since release.

Diablo IV started off well, but its shortcomings have become more apparent as the weeks go on. It was always half-baked and lacking features, but still somewhat enjoyable to play. The graphics are good, but the story is forgettable and was clearly shoehorned into being extended infinitely into their live-service "seasons".

The online-only requirement is a joke. Forget about testing

The graphics are good, but the story is forgettable and was clearly shoehorned into being extended infinitely into their live-service "seasons".

The online-only requirement is a joke. Forget about testing yourself in Hardcore, since any connection issue on either yours, Blizzard's, or Xbox's side will result in permadeath for your character.

I initially enjoyed the gameplay, acknowledging the obvious slower pace when compared to Diablo III. The resource generation is a fraction of what it was in the previous game, and it really shows with the skills used in meta builds.

The loot in this game is absolutely abysmal. Items regularly drop 10-15 levels below your current level. Killing level 67 enemies to get a level 45 item in return is not rewarding. Even if the loot is appropriately-scaled, there is no guarantee you will have good RNG with the item power, and it will still most likely be useless. I frequently fill up my inventory with rares and legendaries to just end up selling or salvaging it all.

Build viability is a major issue. Druid, Rogue, and Necromancer all have effective builds, but some are much more effective than others. Barbarian has a few decent builds, but nothing super optimal. Good luck if you want to play Sorcerer though. You've heard of glass cannon, well say hello to glass squirt gun.

On top of all the balancing issues, the UI is horrendous. Clearly little effort or funding was put into testing any of it.

All of the above issues were apparent before the recent 1.1 patch... so what did this patch change? Did Blizzard improve any of the UI issues? Did they buff less effective builds? Did they bring back any quality of life features from previous games? Did they make loot worth grinding for? No. Of course not. This patch entailed wide-spread nerfs to damage, survivability, loot drops, and XP gain. Not even the mistreated sorcerers could escape the Wrath of Blizzard's nerf hammer.

This game was slow to begin with, but now it is slower, more difficult, more tedious, less rewarding, and ultimately less fun. I will not be playing this game until the issues are fixed, and I encourage others to make the same decision.

This game has a lot of potential, but it seems like the devs are purposely doing everything they can to prevent anyone from having any fun. Blizzard, please step out of your own way and give us the game you promised.

The way the game has been handled by blizzard since the release has been messy at best. Continuous nerfs to various abilities and farming methods was very frustrating, though some things legitimately needed to be hotfixed, but the latest patch not fixing ANY of the numerous core issues plaguing the game and instead instating even more nerfs is extremely confusing.

Who ever is making decisions about patch priorities should be reassessed. We (mostly) tend to play video games to have fun and the long list of hotfixes and this recent patch have active removed this element from the game. Why would anyone play something that is no longer fun?

Server Lag is horrible. There is a known memory leak that still remains unfixed that causes frequent game crashes. The effectiveness of many builds were destroyed and there is no compensation for all the players that now have to reassess and rebuild their characters since the issue of respeccing/ cost is still unaddressed.

There is much more that can be discussed but it seems to fall on deaf ears with blizzard.

TLDR; I do not recommend this game in its current state. The ratio of enjoyment to frustration is too high.

Good to notice also that balance does not exist at all - there are no players between the development team, just spreadsheet monkeys.

After 80 hours, and after starting a second character, the motivation is gone, and I need new content and more flexible character building.

TL;DR I liked Diablo 3 and Path of Exile more.

    # Gameplay
Hitfeedback is not that satisfying. Ability variety is less than in previously mentioned games.
Levelling was exciting in Diablo 3, each level gave you something new to try. In Diablo 4, you unlock a section where you can try 4-5 Skills, where only one skill may be fun to use. Then you have to grind too long with levelling multiple levels, to unlock the next skill set to try new skills. The more you level, the longer it takes to unlock the next set.
You can't observe how your Experience bar goes up, it will be covered by an annoying status information. In Diablo 3, it was exciting to see that bar going up, depending on the amount of kills, and difficulty.
For looting, it is missing a feature from Diablo 3, which would indicate whether the loot would increase a stat or not. Now, you have to loot, go to menu, navigate to the item, then decide what to do with it.
Bosses are very bullet spongy, and become monotonous quickly, you will see when doing dungeons. I reduced the difficulty and renounced Experience boost, just to get over with this a bit faster. Sometimes it becomes a pure endurance minigame, seeing the health bar of the boss going down so slowly, while repeating the same pattern.
Bosses have too easy mechanics. Path of Exile bosses are designed better.
Elites of different races share combat patterns, and also behave very predictable after having fought a few of them. If I see one more jump-smash attack of an elite, I will scream.
When you have found your favourite skill set from the skill tree, that’s it. There is not much change for the skills on how they behave. The only thing that changes with those endgame boards, are a few more attribute points here, a few more % damage there. Not like in Path of Exile, where you can significantly modify the behaviour of skills, also in the endgame.
I also started a second character, and it's still the same feeling, just with other skills. In Path of Exile, you can have all those skills with just one character.
One ultimate skill from the bow class (arrow rain), is a standard skill in Path of Exile.
It’s laborious to change the world level. In Diablo 3 you could switch fluently between world levels, right from the pause/character menu.
On level 51, I was still waiting for the feeling which Diablo 3 and Path of Exile gave me.
It becomes extremely monotonous, when doing map completion, riding from A to B, just to experience the same again and again. Enemies become monotonous. Sometimes, the enemy just walks around you, sticking on you.
After unlocking the third, and last interesting endgame board, and unlocking the legendary nodes on all three, I thought “so.. that’s it”?
My next goal should be unlocking world level 4. But that means I have to grind until lv 70 with the same monotonous gameplay. No thanks.
I miss the sandboxiness of Path of Exile, where I can increase the attack speed almost on my wish, and I miss the combat feeling of both Path of Exile and Diablo 3.

    # World
Main story & atmosphere, good. Impressively good (italian) voice acting.
Shared world stuff just distracts, feels cheap like a Lost Ark clone.
When I was lv 45, the loot in the main story was for lv 35, even if mission level was scaled to my level.
World boss, almost no hit feedback, and also just a bullet sponge with repetitive and predictable behaviour.
Riding from A to B is a pure minimap minigame, typical open-world problem.
Secondary missions have very much spoken dialogues, also with many optional dialogues. I find, the game designer(s) should have put more resources into the gameplay. I only did secondary missions, for map completion, for unlocking endgame points. I skipped all secondary mission dialogues, and did not do one more secondary mission, after unlocking all map rewards. The stories of secondary missions were standard secondary stuff.

    # Technology
Xbox live gold subscription for Singleplayer play, is unbelievable.
Tips on loading screens go away too quickly.

-mounts seem horrifically useless and always just run into non visible blocks that just stop you or
    -random dismounts
-i honestly think all the math isn't adding up as well for resists and damages but i can't be certain because there isn't clear way to see what values you're pulling as you can't look at your stats while playing
-i'm getting just rubber banding issues at certain times and the constant hotfixes is causing disconnects
-there doesn't seem to be any focus on anything that helps players in the long run while the studio just seems to put their attention on blocking anything that helps players (make elites spread out, make elites spawn less, make players get less XP, make sure to not fix any of the other major issues)
-early game wasn't as expensive respecing but the more changes they keep making, the more folks are trying to find builds that will help and update gear that will help and it's all for naught because it'll get nerfed again or you're too broke to fully get to the point you're trying to reach
-accessibility options are very minimal and don't really assist in anything outside the same ol' standard template of "just give 'em basic stuff so we can say we tried".
-if you're gonna make this part Diablo Immortal, least put in the LFG for dungeons. That I dug and would help with folks who are on solo and just wanna clear an area faster. Currently no real way to find a group to do things like the old school battle net lobby and i think it's because the crossplay that lot of console players don't really chat from the console

This feels like Diablo Immortal slapped on Diablo 3 very poorly with a promise of D2 feeling captured but it's like a D2 Lite Spritzer. The team seemed to have forgotten all the things they endured to make D3 better and it had a rocky start. I can't even agree with some of these folks that say it's more Diablo 3 - It seems pre D3 to me in the sense of the AH fiasco all over again. I'm slightly hopeful that Blizz will release something that they will be more vocal, they'll be more active and share why some of the choices they made were implemented that worked well in the previous iterations and that like the rough start of D3, they're gonna do what they can to make it right.

It wouldn't be fair to just say the bad things about this game so:
-i liked the story, it's a bit slow paced and some moments are definitely "why?!?1" but it's good for what they're trying to do with this live service and chapters approach
-it does look pretty, those people saying it's a prettier D2/D3; that's not a negative and they should highlight that
-i had fun with the exploring and seeing items dropped very early so again, fun for the first few days; when was the last time you were excited for a yellow item to drop?
    -all the easter eggs
    -trash titles

I did see Devs released an update as i completed this and will definitely update this to better if they follow what they shared on the video
    https://youtu.be/3PO9OY7AIs4?t=1715
-this is more personal but 25-28 bucks for a costume seems absurd, kudos to those that don't care about that and that's not included in my negative outlook for this game but it def is only for looks - no pay to win junk in the store as some of these other folks wrote.

    Zero attachment with special loot.
Finding uniques was never so boring.
    No endgame.

As someone with +4500 houers in Diablo 2, D4 is destroyed by the gear-system and scaling. Absolute 0 depth in items which is one of the fundamental factors in the Diablo franchise. Diablo IV is the perfect evolution of the series. The many new features make for a truly modern title, giving us an experience capable of keeping us glued to the controller for many hours, without neglecting the historical and most beloved features of the series. If we add to this a technical aspect of the highest quality, a very accessible multiplayer structure, and a huge end-game, we obtain a majestic title that stands as the best exponent of the action-RPG genre and is capable of bringing us plenty of emotions.

Diablo IV is a social phenomenon and once again sets a new standard for the genre. It's a dark, spooky, action-packed experience. Combat is frantic, fluid and fun, while micro-management of resources and inventory feels better than ever before.

Diablo IV is the culmination of everything Blizzard has set up before to make one ultimate experience. The world is stunning, drowned in a beautiful soundtrack that makes even the smallest moments feel epic. With a deep character system, satisfying combat and an endgame that feels like only the start of your adventure, it's hard not to recommend. Dig in, experiment with classes, fight some demons and loot some dungeons. You won’t regret it.
