In Torment: Tides of Numenera, players must decide for themselves the answer to the eternal question, what does one life matter? Numenera's Ninth World is a fantastic vision of a world in which massive civilizations continue to rise and fall with only cities, monuments, and artifacts left behind to serve as reminders of their past existence. These reminders have become part of the accumulated detritus of eons and now this assortment of ancient power, called the numenera, is there for the taking. One of these humans has discovered a way to harness the numenera to grow strong, to cheat death, to skip across the face of centuries in a succession of bodies. Torment is far more than just a phenomenal role-playing game. It’s a challenge to restore the depth and nuance for which the genre was once known.

There are many hours of gameplay to be had here and if you’re after an old fashioned, but fresh RPG, which takes its role playing roots seriously, then this is a must buy for you. If you love story and narrative, rather than action and shooting, then you should be grabbing it right now.

Despite a few issues with the gameplay, loading times, and some random crashes, Torment Tides of Numenera provides one of the deepest and most entertaining RPG experiences you will find on the Xbox One.

I absolutely adore the game, and I feel that modern roleplaying fans who also enjoy narrative-heavy games like Life is Strange will find a lot to love about Torment: Tides of Numenera. Modern RPGs from blockbuster-budget studios could learn a lot from InXile with regards to "choice and consequence," and the true value of a branching narrative. If you're looking for a story-focused game where your choices truly matter, set in a rich, nuanced world absolutely crammed with sci-fi obscurities, fantastical beasts, and mind-warping trans-dimensional phenomena, you will adore Torment: Tides of Numenera.

Torment is a game for anyone who's a fan of a good book, an epic tale, or that simply wants a fresh take on RPGs that consoles have never seen. It may not be a great novel, but it's certainly a very good one.

If you are one of those players that enjoy with classic RPG, Torment: Tides of Numenera may offer you what you are looking for thanks to its huge complexity and a fascinating story line that makes this a game to be kept in mind. It’s a shame that its disastrous performance stains the final result.

A fascinating break from the RPG norm let down by terrible performance problems. [April 2017, p.92]

I enjoy reading all the stories, asking twice for each line to know some more!
But its better to play on your native language- i usually enjoy and fully understand games on english, but this game i enjoy only in my native language (russian) - since you read a lot here and dont want to stop if new word met.
Great game, totally different from others, so its a big room of fresh air!

This is the best way to do it. I really like in RPGs like Dragon Age or Fallout or Skyrim when you get to take a break from combat action and contemplate tough choices that affect the world. Torment is JUST THOSE PARTS, and its really well done. If you like those parts too and you enjoy reading, this is a great time so far, I'm taking a long time with it because I'm reading way more than I have to because its a cool story. There can be some fighting if thats the story you want, but its not really the draw, no big explosive cutscenes, but very fun and artistic and deep world to play around in and explore and take a vacation in.

Edit: Nevermind, they ran out of money and rushed the ending of the game. Its the beginning of a really cool game though, shame, what a waste

For me I don't mind some dialogue, as I've played games like Pillars of Eternity (although I think that game has a bit too much dialogue sometimes), but this game completely has way too much dialogue. It's interesting as the game was built/used pillars of eternity engine/design, and that's clear, but Pillars of Eternity actually you know had combat, sadly which this game completely lacks. I don't recommend this game unless you really just want to read texts and maybe it's a good story, but most players won't see the story as they'll probably quit the game in the first few hours, like I did.

I even tend to like talky games, but every goddamn townsperson had to give me their whole damn life story before sending me on a generic fetch quest. That's partly on me for being a completionist, but better games tend to dole this stuff out at a more measured pace. Not to mention that all objectives are pretty vague and very little direction is given, such that you feel compelled to talk to everyone simply in an attempt to grasp some narrative throughline.

In the end it fell into a common CRPG trap: it forgot there was a game to play here.
