I enjoyed this very much but I wish the DLC wasn't as expensive and if there were way more maps and a Death Star map otherwise this would be a higher score.

Basically this is a game to completely avoid if you are a die hard Star Wars fan. If you are more of a casual shooter fan then there is some fun to be had here but be aware that it wears out it's welcome very fast. Not worth anywhere near the $60 price tag. This is a $30 game at best and EA is out of its mind to charge $50 for the Season pass.

My final thought is how much I wanted this to be the game that gives me an alternative to the washed up run of the mill COD series and gives me a new shooter to enjoy for months and months to come. It failed me miserably. Don't think I got 3 weeks out of it before I felt like "Is this it?"

Otherwise, this game is overpriced for its dearth of features. Unless you are a student or have enough free time to kill to master it and buy all of the equipment, like the 30% of reviewers who thinks this is a good game, you will find it extremely difficult and the gameplay repetitive. This way how we can pilot it is really unfair and this is the same with everything else like hearoes/vilains or with the Millenium Falcon!!! After a month of playing I have never been the one who pilot an AT-AT because always were other who are faster to find that. It's ok that the chances are the same for everyone but in this way it's not. EA just show much more better trailes what this game became. What a big hang-up... :(:(:(:(:(
Anyway this game can be 8/10 for me if they change this chance and if they will put 6-8 (3-4 in both sides) more heroes/villains in the next DLCs.

This is a tough game to review... It's so technically good that it hurts to score it so low. But I have to agree with the general consensus that SWBF is flawed, to say the least.

Let's start with the positive. The game looks AMAZING for one. The atmosphere feels right, just like star wars. The general feel of the game and the authenticity is spot on. It's almost worth it to buy it just to experience, by far, the most realistic virtual Star Wars world ever created - at least in terms of the atmosphere and graphics. The sound is also pretty spot on I have to say. And I have to give credit for how OPTIMIZED the game feels! Not only does the game look AMAZING, but it runs without a hitch! I am running it at completely maxed settings including AA at a resolution of 2560x1440 and it runs 99.9% of the time at a locked 60fps on my Radeon R9 390 - which is only a $300 single card solution. That is impressive.

The bad. There is no single player campaign.... Okay, so yeah it is Battlefront, it's msotly about the multiplayer. But Star Wars is a universe we all crave to dive into. Instead what we have here is what feels like a mix between Call of Duty and Battlefield in the Star Wars Universe. It;s unbalanced like crazy for one. I started playing after a lot of people already had a bunch of unlocks. I do perfectly fine when I am not getting one shot by bowcasters or whatever other weapons seem to deal WAY more damage than the first few blasters you unlock. I think 90% of the time I died was from the 1 or 2 enemy players who happens to have all the unlocks. It's pretty unfair when everyone on the map is flying around via a jet pack and you have a pistol and a grenade because you have to spend a dozen hours playing to unlock anything else useful. Even so, I managed a 1.06 K/D ratio after about 6 hours of gameplay despite being at an obvious disadvantage. That said, the gamepaly is just shallow after only that small amount of time. I feel like I'm playing an arcade game with bigger, beautiful maps. It's like a Vegas VR experience or something that's only meant for a short period of fun and to experience a realistic Star Wars atmosphere with battles going on above and walkers around you. There's just no depth to this game. If you start late, you'll get crushed by OP weapons. If you start early you'll get bored of the mechanics... And then there's the unlock system itself and cards and floating power ups on the battlefield. Ugh.

If Dice could team up with Bethesda, Square, or Bioware maybe? Maybe then they could develop a technically brilliant game, just like this one, but with a deep, interesting campaign and story and more interesting, balanced game mechanics. That's what this game should have been. A campaign that pulled us in and some innovative tie-in to multiplayer battles. Hell, even Titanfall was better than this and kept my interest longer. It's such a shame that possibly the best looking, best running game I can play on my PC is jsut boring and unbalanced after half a standard video game campaign worth of gameplay...

This would be effective except for the fact that at some point inside of 0.5 seconds of overheating you can quickly press X to instantly cool your weapon and begin firing again. Do not expect to ever be able to beat someone using this weapon unless you have several squad mates with you. The flight simulator has a similar problem. At some point during the match players can gain control of either the Millennium Falcon or Boba Fett's ship. These ships are near invincible. You can literally be blasting them for several minutes non-stop and they just will not die. Also they seem to be able to shoot missiles at you, even if you are directly behind them. Their dominance in game will determine what team wins the match regardless of other player's performance. Expand

One can argue that in today's gaming culture, the graphics of a particular game may not matter much. That gamers really care about content and reliability. Well, one thing we won't have to worry about in Star Wars Battlefront is the looks.

From the first battle, I was astounded at how well this game really does in the art department. Every battle field is gorgeous, with scenery that really tugs the eyes and says "look over here!" That being said, the rest of the game isn't so great. Where to start:

    1) The balance of this game is ridiculous. On some maps ( Jundaland ) the Rebels get a clear head start in conquering the first control point. When most of your side can reach it in 2 seconds, it's pretty lopsided. On others, the vehicles of the Empire will always turn the tide of a battle. Calling in multiple Tie Fighters and AT-ST, the Rebels soon find themselves overwhelmed.

    2) Weapon balance is incredibly outrageous. When I can be killed in two shots by a pistol wielding storm trooper from 200 yards away, we know we have a problem. The stats for the weapons (range, damage, cooling power, etc. ) are pretty much useless. I don't know how many times I have been sniped by a pistol, but apparently pistols are basically long range blasters in this game, so yay.

    3) I like the addition of the card system, giving you different hands and so, but it would make much more sense to have one primary weapon and a much less powerful and close range side arm. Instead, if you want a side arm, you have to buy the scout pistol card and take up on of your 3 cards spots. And..

    4) Those card spots are oh so important. Many of them remove the skill needed to shoot someone. A "homing shot?" Like, really? Not much skill in a homing missile that you can use every 10-15 seconds. Also, not that I am a Star Wars expert, but I'm pretty sure that most troops weren't shooting around the battle field in jump packs. Makes the Supremacy mode very annoying.

    5) The other game modes fail to inspire any real fun, and had me always going back to Supremacy and Walker Assault. The various power ups you can pick up help to give each battle a small difference in feel, but after being sliced by Vader, or sniped by Han Solo for the 1000th time, it becomes monotonousness. Almost an inevitability that I will die, again and again, which leads me to....

    6) WHY THE EVERY LIVING F**K WOULD YOU SPAWN ME THERE! Almost every match I am spawned in an incredibly stupid location. Just killed three rebels before you died and feeling good? Well here, how about you spawn in front of 8 rebels, see how you like that! I mean, I have spawned literally in front of the entire enemy army, in front of a blasting AT-ST, and oh RIGHT ON TOP OF A PROXIMITY MINE. My god, how stupid can these developers be?

I have put 25 hours into this game, which isn't a lot, but I feel it's enough to render a verdict on this game. I want to love it, I really want to love it, but I find myself struggling to even like it. Hopefully, the balancing issues come up and are fixed and in the future this game will get the credit it deserves.

    Maybe then..maybe.

The several game modes are almost all just slight variations of the same thing, with only Walker Assualt being anything close to entertaining. Even then though how many times can you do the same mission on the paltry selection of maps before it becomes a chore?

The leveling up system is shallow and only seems to reward time spent playing as opposed to actual skill. And many of the unlockable weapons or items are next to useless, such as the jet pack that allows you to travel all of about 10ft before running out.

As to the battles, you will find yourself subject to constant cheap deaths, such as being one hit killed by one of the way overpowered hero characters, blown up by almost unavoidable homing missles or unluckily spawning 5ft from a group of enemies.

It is hard to believe that the 10 year old Battlefront 2 has vastly superior gameplay to this mess.

Cheap, one hit kill weapons like the Pulse Cannon, Homing Shot, and Bowcaster are annoying, and the frustration is added onto when you are repeatedly killed by the (over powered) DL-44 blaster pistol that EVERYBODY uses, and the never ending grenade spam, since everyone can have an unlimited amount of grenades. The small amount of maps, weapons, and (quality) game modes will quickly bore you of the game, like it did to me and countless others.

There is no difference between a good and bad player, due to the cheap, easy to use weapons, the heroes are almost unstoppable, there is little to none squad and team play, since everyone tries to go Rambo. And no one cares about the useless emotes and diorrama mode.

"Star Wars: Battlefront", DICE's revival of Pandemic's online shooter, is similar to their own "Battlefield" franchise in terms of both structure and gameplay. The best thing I can say about it is how faithfully it re-creates the famed battles from the original "Star Wars" trilogy. The game's presentation captures both the look and feel of the classic movies with its stunning graphics, iconic sound effects and John Williams' legendary score. While "Battlefront" does not contain a campaign, it does include numerous maps and modes that can be enjoyed both online and off. However, compared to the "Battlefield" games, it is lacking in depth. There are numerous weapons, gadgets and abilities to unlock, but nowhere as much as you'd find in any other comparable shooter. However, if you're a fan of both "Battlefield" and "Star Wars", you'll certainly enjoy "Battlefront".

The game includes 14 maps, 10 multiplayer modes, 5 tutorial missions and two single player modes which can be played with a partner. But it must be said that not all are on equal footing when it comes to enjoyment. "Supremacy" and "Walker Assault" are 40 player matches and are the best modes the game has to offer. Aerial combat can be found in "Flight Squadron" and melee combat is exclusive to the two "Hero" modes which feature three heroes from the good side and bad. "Droid Run" and "Conquest" has you protecting an area of the map from the opposing team. And "Battles" is basically "Kill Confirmed" from "Call of Duty" (you must pick up icons left by dead adversaries to score). Lastly, "Survival" is a horde mode where you must survive 15 rounds of Imperial attacks. Additionally, the game includes mini-challenges that unlock artwork when completed and you can also purchase various skins as you earn currency.

DICE has made the announcement that free maps and modes will appear throughout the year, so even if you haven't bought the Season Pass, there are some add-ons to look forward to. In the end, "Star Wars: Battlefront" is a good addition to the "Star Wars" universe. It celebrates the original trilogy very much like "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" and is more enjoyable than the uneven "Force Unleashed" games. So if you're a fan of DICE, "Star Wars" and FPS game in general, then you'll certainly enjoy it. 7.8 out of 10

The visuals and sound (along with John Williams' score) really immerse you into the world of Star Wars. The X-Wing battle in the canyon on Tattooine is stunning, as well as the Hoth setting. I've seen it mentioned that the game sorely lacks prequel settings which is absolutely true. Yes, the films were terrible, but some of the visuals and worlds should be included here.

The game is not deep at all. There are training missions, some "vs." battles, and online play, but no real campaigns, and what there is is limited by a very small amount of character customization. Casual gamers like myself will enjoy it, but hard-core people will become bored quickly.

Overall, this is a fun foray into the Star Wars universe that should have been a little more broad. I'm curious what the expansion packs will add, but I don't think I'll be curious enough to buy them.

I thought the best part would be playing a hero.. Never been so wrong in my life.. The heroes animation just look strange and it only brings more type of game that completly sucks.

Despite the currently unfavorable reviews, this is truly not a terrible game. I think people should understand 2 things when buying this game, which in my opinion are the two big negatives that people are really upset about:

    1) This is not going to be the same experience you had with the previous battlefront games 10 years ago. Quit simply, this game currently does not play like the previous ones did. There is no classic 'conquest' mode to it-while 'supremacy' is similar, the way its set up causes the game to not flow like the old battlefront did at all. There is no strategy really in terms of attacking-no flanking, nothing like that. In supremacy (which seems to be the mode most people play) at any one time there is at most 2 bases in play-they will be bases that are right next to each other, so there is a constant 'front line' effect (where everybody is fighting in the same spot), which essentially rules out any real tactics that would be involved. I think most people who were very excited for this game to come out were people who previously played this game and wanted it to essentially be like the older games with larger maps, more maps, and better graphics. You won't get that, this will be an overall different FPS experience. The air combat seems to be pretty bad. I prefer to run around and shoot as opposed to flying an x-wing or whatever, however even I noticed that the flying is pretty bad. I would also say that currently the game modes that involve 'heroes' are not so fun. For Battlefront 2, the Mos Eisley hero fight was epic fun. It's not quite the same on this.

    2) EA, in classic style, is trying to get as much money out of this as they can. In doing so, the game that is currently on the market is incomplete. That is the main reason this game is getting bad reviews. In a year this game will be a 9/10. However, the game that is currently on the market only has maps on 4 planets; Hoth, Endor, Tatooine and Sullust (a world thats important in the expanded universe of star wars but never in the movies). There are only currently 6 heroes-Luke, Vader, Leia, Jango Fett, the Emporer and Han Solo. When you consider that the previous game (which came out 10 years ago) had more hero options-thats quite annoying. There seems to be a lack of game modes, but again, the lack of game modes, heroes, and maps will all be resolved when more expansions come out. However, you will end up paying anywhere from $50-$80 for these expansions, which is bad and we as a gaming community should not support these practices.

While I've ranted a bit about the negatives, it's time for some good things about this game. The graphics are stunning. Probably the best I've seen in a FPS ever. Also, the gameplay is incredibly smooth. I've experienced no lag, no servers crashing, nothing of the sort, even once. I personally find the controls intuitive and once you get the hang of the style of this game, I find myself generally being one of the top 3-4 players each match, having an absolute blast jumping around in my jet pack, using my ion shots to blow up turrets or piss of people who are in vehicles. The game can be great, mindless fun. While I've read some reviews that rip on the upgrades and customization-I think those are actually pretty good. You have a dozen guns to choose from, you can purchase like 100 different outfits your character (depending on level), and they added an option where you can essentially have a special ability (For me I shoot ion bullets) which adds another element to the game completely. The maps that are there are good, which gives me faith that newer ones that come out will be good as well. You can also run around and pick up upgrades, which adds another element. You never know if that grenade that landed next to you is just a thermal detonator or thermal imploder, or whether you are being locked by a homing shot or an infantry turret.

If you will only be satisfied with this new Battlefront if it plays like the previous ones, I would say do not purchase. It will not be with your time or disappointment that this is a different game. I would also say that if money is an issue for you at all that I would wait a year or so to purchase. All of the expansions will probably be on a single disc that will be only $60 by then. However, if you have an open mind (sounds kinda lame I know), and simply love fun, first person shooters I say this is a decent purchase. You absolutely will enjoy playing this game, the graphics are stunning, the gameplay is incredibly smooth, the soundtrack is great, you will feel like you are in the world of star wars. However, shame on EA (or maybe us) for obviously using the Battlefront franchise to take as much money from people as possible. I think if they waited a little bit and released a complete version of this game, the sheer volume of people purchasing it would have given them more profit than the current state of people purchasing it, and then paying for upgrades.

Gameplay is fast-paced and fun, with large and small scale battles feeling exciting and well-balanced. Technically, the game runs very smoothly, with none of the bugs or crashes that have plagued large game releases over the past few years.

For people looking for more than an easy Star Wars fix, you will want to rent this before buying. The gameplay is very fun, but not particularly deep. Customization is present, but not necessarily complex, and the small number of maps can be repetitive during long play sessions. My advice would be to play this game casually, rather than treat it in a hardcore manner like Fallout 4.

For those that are cowed by the low user score, there is a general feeling of anger among many in the gaming community that this game is not simply a reskin of the old school Battlefront games, combined with general resentment towards Electronic Arts, the publisher of this game. All of this petty whining has led to people who are reviewing this game negatively for personal reasons, rather than rating the game objectively.

For the first few levels you tend to not have a great time- this is a flaw for sure. I found the flying to be hard at first but once I did the tutorials a bit I got better at that too.

After logging some serious hours into this game I now LOVE this game. The game is incredibly immersive in the Star Wars universe. The game has no campaign, but it is a multiplayer game meant to have enormous battlefronts. WARNING do not play this game like a Call of Duty game or you will have a bad time. You have to be careful and find cover, and learn how to capture objectives efficiently.

The game is just plain fun. It does have more depth than meets the eye, but the different star cards basically determine your "class" or what you are best at. If you want to kill vehicles you need an Ion torpedo or Ion shot star card. If you want to kill infantry use pulse canon or homing shot. Play heroes Vs villains to learn the heroes better.

I'm only taking 2 points off for the beginning of the progression system as it is hard for first few levels and one for the DLC price- though I think I will buy it as I am having so much fun with this game, LEGITIMATE fun. Again my first impressions were off, but seriously give this game a chance. Its also really fun with more friends.

This is a not a bad game. It is visually fantastic and at times truly thrilling. Running across grass, or ducking for cover on the sand covered planes of Tatooine has never felt more real, thanks to unbelievable graphics and sound design. In those areas, Star Wars Battlefront excels better than most titles could ever dream of.

In those areas, Star Wars Battlefront excels better than most titles could ever dream of.

But the excellence of this title just about runs short there. If you remove the extremely impressive and polished coating around this game, you are left with a shallow, and at best average, shooter game. There are a handful of modes that are fun for a while, but most are uninspired and more of a drag to play than a thrill. The map choice is very limited at launch, and I felt I'd seen everything in just a few hours. There is no real campaign, not much genuine choice, and just very little to get stuck into here.

On top of this, the game has an absurd price tag. In the UK it's £40 at launch with very vague 'DLC packs' promised in the future for about the same price. Pay for everything, and you're close to £100 on a game that doesn't really beat its competition in any department other than sound and visuals. This is just ludicrous. Star Wars Battlefront feels empty, hollow and is a bit of a cash grab. It is smaller and less fulfilling than its predecessors and considering they are over a decade old now, DICE and EA have much more to do if they want the promised sequel to be worth anything near the prices they charge.

The gameplay is fun in some ways but leans heavily towards camping en mass and the vehicle control is standard.

It feels like there is a lot invested in making it look and feel likes star wars but no real investment in making an intricate, skill based modern day shooter. Playing as Fett or Vader may be cool although strangely enough Leia is the most OP of the heroes but it is short lived and cant be frustrating trying close combat as a jedi in a mass arena camping style shooter.

    I don't recommend this game.

CFO of EA explains away this dumbing-down by admitting they want '8-year olds' to be able to easily play, despite the teen ESRB rating the game holds. Limited weapon selection even when fully unlocked. No weapon mod system, and none feel particularly fun. Hit box issues and damage reduction at range make combat frustrating.

Outrageous spawning issues - expect to spawn directly on top of opponents or have them do the same to you. I got chain killed by Luke Skywalker three times within 20 seconds as I repeatedly spawned directly in front of the player controlling him.

I did not buy the season pass when offered. 50.00$ is pretty expensive when details on the 4 dlcs to come are sketchy at best.

Game quickly becomes tedious and repetitive. No wookies. No space battles.

The immense pool of resources available from a hugely popular universe, experienced development team, and existing shooters to draw inspiration from leave no excuse for Battlefront to be as substandard as it is.

Tangentially, an argument could be made that this was a lazy, shameless bid on EA's part for a guaranteed cash cow on the coat tails of a popular brand and the impending movie resurgence.

I will say categorically that no Star Wars game looks better than this one, there was tremendous effort put into making it look and sound absolutely incredible. Every twig on Endor, every sun reflection off of Vaders helmet, every stone in Tatooine… all of it looks almost photo-realistic.

But the reason it scores so low is honestly… and I hate to say this because I wanted to like it so much more than I do… it’s boring.

After a few hours of gameplay you’ll find there’s not much to keep your attention, the linear designs of the maps make combat extremely controlled and while it may not be entirely fair to compare it to Battlefield… the fact remains that I cannot put plastic explosives on a tree log, blow them up and have the tree log destroy a helicopter holding 6 people in it… The point being beyond killing members of the other side with a blaster… there’s no crazy possibilities open such as in battlefield.

Now that isn’t to say there’s no fun to be had here at all… I did have a lot of fun to begin with, however I would say if this game could hold your attention for more than 10 hours of gameplay you may want to get checked for brain damage.

Combat quickly descends into a monotonous process combined with such an unbelievable lack of content, the four planets at launch will become old real fast and the $69.99 CAD ask for the season pass is absolutely outrageous.

To its credit though the multiplayer does work incredibly well, I don’t recall having any framerate issues, lag or connectivity issues in matchmaking, however the actual multiplayer game modes were very uninspiring, walker assault and supremacy are the only modes that are really worth any attention and fighter squadron is worth a look for a short time, if only for the ability to fly an X wing or tie fighter around for the five minutes it’s fun.

As a quick side note the multiplayer custom avatars were equally uninspiring with very little choice.

In the end, like a parent with a kid who’s done something bad… I’m not mad. I’m just disappointed, this could have been so much better than it was, I’m not entirely sure what would fix it. But we know we have a problem and that’s the first step in getting better.

I have played Star Wars Battlefront for about 15 hours now. After spending my time with the game, I have established a final opinion on it. For this review, I will be splitting the content up into 5 different categories: Graphics, Sound, Controls, Lasting Appeal, and Server Reliability. Lets start with how this game is presented.

Star wars Battlefront is a breathtaking game since the second its booted up. Once spawned into a map, you will be treated to a superb array of detail and nods to the films and novels. Ewoks can be seen roaming around Endor, and Hoth contains some indoor pathways identical to the movies. And this is before it all gets destroyed. Once the battle starts, battlefront becomes one of the best looking games that I've seen. Ever. AtAt's lurk over the field and ships fly above. There is never a quiet moment in this game I have no complaints about the overall presentation of the game. I would rate it a 10 out of 10.

Next up there is sound. Most effect sound great, in fact, almost all of them do.There's nothing more satisfying then hearing a thermal imploder detonate 10 feet away. However, it's the soundtrack that really bothers me. It sounds good, but it honestly just becomes an annoyance after a while. I found myself playing with the soundtrack off, because it just doesn't match. I would give the sound a 10 out of 10, assuming the soundtrack is down or off.

The controls in this game are very good too. In this game there are "cards" with different weapons, perks, items, etc available for use. They are assigned to the left and right bumpers. The gameplay works, but it's not very innovative, and can get pretty boring after the first 10 hours. 6/10

Next there is lasting appeal. This is where Battlefront struggles. The gameplay had my jaw hanging from the first match, but the majority of it wars off. However, there's nothing more badass then throwing sabers at people with vader, or hulking on the field in a huge AtAt. 6/10

The servers didn't give me a huge problem, but they were a little annoying at times. he game would stop moving at points just because the server was "bad", when Gears of War worked just fine 10 minutes later. Also, you will frequently find yourself spawning into enemy fire. It's extremely annoying. 4/10

All in all, this is a good, but not great game. The game lacks content, but makes up for it in pure awesomeness with what it has.

Supremacy and Walker Assault are of course a couple of the funner modes, but I honestly like the Fighter Squadron mode the most so far. So far I am having fun, but I can see where some come from stating the lack of content considering the low map count for each mode. EA has stated a few days ago though they are now going to release new maps and starcards for free on top of the planned content and free DLC that comes out in 7 days. So I can see myself getting $60 worth out of the game easily over the next month or two. Beyond that though the season pass is questionable and we will have to see what they add(I refuse to buy that until some information is released on it). So for an early review of the game and getting a general feel of it and the content provided I would honestly rate it at a 7/10. However I will bump that up to a 9/10 considering all the people rating it 0/10 lol. The game is much better than that and the user-review hate is rampant here for some reason. Expand

I'm not going to lie. I've played this game a ton, but it feels like its missing something.

No its not the single player content, or campaign, but the fact you pay $60 for such a limited about of content. If you enjoy the large battle style battlefront, the game ships with only 4 playable maps. If you join in the rotation works out that you play the same side on each map each time

If you enjoy the large battle style battlefront, the game ships with only 4 playable maps. If you join in the rotation works out that you play the same side on each map each time unless you leave the play list and rejoin it with the hop you start on the other side. Since the playlist regularly rotates through the same maps in order they should have made sure to have an odd number of maps, and keep the # odd with DLC additions. Now granted the Battle of Jakku DLC (free) will hopefully fix this, but once again we are waiting almost a month after release for the 'actual' game to be out.

The positives are that the game is very polished. Aside from a few game crashes (maybe once every 5 - 6 hrs of gameplay), it runs smooth and as intended. It's probably one of the best DICE/EA releases in years when it comes the actual final release quality of the code.

I would recommend this though for major Star Wars fan, as this game is a really big fan service. The game is very true to the original films and feels so much like you are in these epic battles. If only it would have had a little more content I would have given it a 8/10.

The game is fun, plain and simple, but the game does suffer from a lack of content and a lack of polish. I imagine these will be remedied in future patches and DLC content (some of which will be free in the case of Battle of Jakku). I thoroughly enjoy every minute of this game but my bias will not keep me from voicing some very relevant issues I have with the game, as well as many others.

The game is a full RRP'd glorified demo, in every sense of the term: (as of writing) four(4) maps only; six(6) heroes; no space battles; restrictive map layouts; same-y weapons / weapon effects; boring, casualised gameplay (*lock-on aiming is not filterable in online play); silly token system to unlock the insultingly meagre content (e.g., normie skins and generic weapons); no split-screen online play; shallow, cursory offline split-screen implementation... Whichever angle you come at E.A.'s SW:Battlefront, you cannot help but see its shortcomings. This game IS NOT worth its RRP -- at launch, it had "season pass" (i.e., stripped content) DLC worth as much as the base game itself! This game is barely a demo. It's... shameful.
This game should be boycotted; not only for the sake of the integrity of the license, but also for the sake of the future of the video gaming pastime. For if games like this become staple for the industry, the pastime is surely dead. 4/10 -- poor / pirate it.

Dice (the creators of Battlefield) have done a phenomenal job at recreating this universe; primed with stunning moments that instill not only a grand sense of nostalgia for Star Wars fans, but also a genuine sense of fun. However, this experience may be far shorter lived than one would hope for a multiplayer-only shooter. Thanks to the noticeable lack of diverse content coupled with the developer’s apprehension to push the franchise into new and challenging territories.

And what a unique experience it is. Playing Battlefront is a lot of fun. Whether you’re the rebel alliance, or the empire, the gameplay is well balanced and runs seamlessly. Its great level design helps make the maps you play on, feel more like actual places than maps—quite an accomplishment for any multiplayer game.

The main game play focuses on your blaster of choice and power up cards you unlock. There are only a few blasters in the game, with no level of individual customization (an odd fact coming from the “unlock heavy” Battlefield 4 developers). The strategy of firefights depends heavily on the power cards. You can have up to three equipped. These cards give you items such as special weapons, grenades, and jet packs. They recharge over time after each use, allowing you to use them frequently, yet ensuring that they aren’t spammed. The more powerful weapons, like orbital strikes, rocket launchers, and vehicle pickups, are one-time use spawn tokens spread across each map. While some cards are certainly prioritized over others, such as the jet pack with its ability to get to vantage points and in and out of conflicts quickly, all the cards can be useful if used appropriately.

On top of normal infantry game play, there are special hero characters from the films you can play as by picking up a unique token. Each hero has unique powers and buffered health bars, and therefore offers great opportunities for strategic pushes, and fun to be had. You can cut down rebels on Hoth as Darth Vader with the Imperial March theme playing, you can shoot the emperor in the face as Han Solo, and you can cut a TIE fighter out of the sky as Luke Skywalker (good luck). It is in these moments that Battlefront really shines.

Unfortunately these moments are mostly restricted two the two largest game modes, Supremacy and Walker Assault. Both offer 20 verses 20 battles with vehicles, huge maps, and hero characters. Supremacy focuses on the acquisition of sequential capture points. While Walker Assault pits rebels vs empire. Where the rebels try and stop the goliath imperial AT-AT walkers from reaching an end point by holding two capture points, which call in bombers, which in turn allow the rebels to do damage and try to destroy the walkers. The empires task is to stop this at all costs. Each of these modes offers a foundation for glorious blaster chaos and epic moments to take place. The other game modes are not as fulfilling by comparison.

There is also a co-op option. Locally or online, you and a partner can beat missions, battle against each other and the AI, or complete survival horde type missions. Each of the co-op options suffer from a lack of depth and replay ability. The missions serve as simple glorified tutorials. The battles are noticeably limited. You can’t play on the same team as your partner and there are no options or objectives beyond kill the AI or your buddy. Survival missions are very run-of-the-mill—survive. Once completing any of these, there is no incentive to do it again. There is a feeling of emptiness in these modes.

It is actually a common feeling surrounding the entire game. The problem with the game is what it lacks, not what it has. The developers did everything they should have, not what they could have. The Star Wars universe, visuals, sounds, and game play is great. There is a large scale game mode that compliments the universe and game play. And there is a co-op mode. But the holes around this core are numerous. There are not nearly enough customization options with game play and features. There are only six hero characters where there is certainly a desire and room for more. There is a lack of a more extensive unlock system that provides players incentive to work towards something. Very few worlds are also explored, though they are done expertly. Co-op is far too limited. You can’t customize battles or even play on the same side outside of online.

What the game lacks is certainly a lot. But what we do get, is certainly highly polished, and can be largely fun. It is a game that has achieved a unique experience, but it plays it safe by taking far too few risks in diving deeper in its available content. Whether the content right now is capable of keeping players online, and whether future content will fulfill some of the absent possibilities will certainly be a testament in due time, but one that I have acquired a new hope for.

As far as shooters go, this is nothing special or innovative. DICE even left out a few essential that feel necessary in modern shooters, namely vaulting over low walls/climbing up on ledges, and for some reason you come to a complete halt when trying to melee. That being said, its freaking star wars! I've logged ~12 hours on the game and i still get giddy fighting on a battlefield with AT-ATs rampantly firing everywhere as TIE Fighters and X-Wings dog fight in the sky. While most of the game types are pretty standard for typical shooters, being able to play them while in the Star Wars universe is still awesome. The maps are gorgeous, and while some of the larger game types like Walker Assault and Supremacy are limited to only 4 maps at the moment, the Jakku DLC will add more content in the coming weeks, as well as future free and paid DLC. While it kinda sucks that right now, Battlefront IS a little light, i think that over time, it will become one of the most content heavy games out there. Expand

So playing the game on the Xbox One it isn't going to have the same look as a high-end PC that runs the game on Ultra however it was breath taking. The Snow on Hoth to the Luscious forest of Endor to the bright Lava on Sullust it is truly remarkable and looks amazing for a console game. The worlds are highly detailed.
The shooting in this game has an arcady style to it and that isn't a bad thing. The game has a real Star Wars feel that fans of the franchise will love. With hero that you can play as if you pick up there tokens. However I think there should be more than 6 hero's, they should of had some prequel maps with have the likes of Padmé, Anakin, Obi Won, Darth Maul, Count Dooku and General Grievous. On the topic of adding in why the hell is there only 4 maps? The reason they have done this is to expand it in as DLC. I hate that and it is early EA's decision not DICEs. That is outrageous because in countries like Australia we have to pay $100 for a new game which I would not recommend buying this game to it at least drops price to around $50-60. It had so much potential but EA tried to milk the brand of it's name.

Those wanting a game reminiscent of the older Battlefront titles are going to be disappointed. Same for those looking for a content rich experience. However people just looking for some Star Wars fun can find an enjoyable experience here. They just have to be willing to put up with some less than satisfactory aspects.

There's no single-player campaign. There is single-player, offline content, but it all just boils down to bot matches and tutorials. There are some bonus objectives to tackle in these modes, but the only one really worth spending any time with is the survival mode. Unfortunately it too has some issues. For one there are only four maps. It also limits the mode to only two players. It's decent, but the AI isn't the greatest and honestly it lacks the punch survival modes have in other games.

But by far the most disappointing part of the meager single-player offerings are that they show potential for what could have been an at least decent campaign. DICE nailed the universe. This game really does feel like Star Wars. Thee graphics and sound are both stellar. Combine those elements with some sharper AI, a solid plot, and decent structure and there could have been a campaign worth talking about. Sadly there isn't.

With the offline content being so lackluster this is definitely a multiplayer focused game. Thankfully it mostly succeeds there. However the more picky out there will still find plenty of gripes. It isn't exactly bursting at the seams with content. More maps at launch would have been appreciated as would have some more modes. I personally view what's here as at the very least a decent amount of content. The real sting about this though comes from the $50 season pass. It's like EA wants us to pay almost double for a more complete experience. Kind of a low move.

Another potential issue comes from the gameplay itself. Star Wars is a huge property. One that has attracted fans from every walk of life. In order to make a game that is accessible to as many of these fans as possible, it has been dumbed down in some ways from your average shooter. Skill still trumps all, but no matter what your gaming experience you can still feel at least a little proud of yourself when matches end. It's not too bad. The only real issue I have with it is the lack of voice chat. Without it there really isn't any strategizing going on outside of party chat with your friends. Some modes could benefit from it.

Yet for all of Battlefront's issues I still find myself having fun with it. That's because it feels like Star Wars. Blasting my way through familiar locations, getting hero power ups, and playing fun modes like Walker Assault make it an enjoyable enough an experience to recommend for most Star Wars fans. Even with most of the modes just being standard to the average FPS, the Star Wars skin keeps me entertained. Perhaps it's better off as a rental at first, but I think Star Wars fans just looking for some multiplayer fun are going to find something to enjoy here regardless of faults.

    I give the game a 7.5/10

While I appreciate the 3 maps per game mode I feel like instead of mining for more money out of people you could have just released a quality game with more content/maps. Dice and EA at it again. The game looks, and feels wonderful. That said, there next to nothing that goes along with the $60 price tag.

Beautiful graphics don't make up for a very shallow shooter. The appeal of the graphics quickly wears off and you're left with a very sub-par shooter with minimal enjoyment.

And that's just the beginning of the stupidity. limited to 1 gun (no sidearm) and 2 special weapons that take 20 seconds to reload makes me hesitant to shoot at an AT-ST because after I shoot its going to kill me. The rebels have no ground vehicles.

    No single player campaign.

    No space battles.

3 armour skins for imperials with a bunch more that are just stormtroopers not wearing helmets, uhh what? (I know I mentioned that already but its really fuc*ing stupid)

1 ground vehicle for imperial (2 in walker assult)

You don't get in a vehicle you "call it in" so you just disappear off the map. It doesn't feel like piloting a vehicle off a staging ground it feels like they were trying too hard to not make it battlefield so they made some stupid **** I tried to think of a better word than **** but it just feels ****ty. If my guy calls in air support what the fuc* happened to him?

Every game mode feels like watered down walker assault. Just play walker assault, its the only worthwhile game mode. The fighter squadron is ok, if you played BF2 its the space assault without carriers so it kinda lame.

I saw someone in a message board say that said "Dude, what do you expect, they only had two years to make it and amazing visually". Let me answer that, I expect you to delay the game until its actually ready. If you know its going to take you more than two years to make a gam, then set the release date for three or four.

In conclusion, your game is bad and you should feel bad.

Talk about paid critic reviews. What an empty shallow game. And have fun with your coaster when EA takes the servers down. Totally lacking in content for future DLC milking. Massively overpriced empty garbage.

The instantaneous feel of being "in the movies" quickly fades into the gray notion of "playing around on the set", with badly choreographed, single-move swordfights. And Palpatine sucks as a playable character. And Leia sucks as a playable character. And there's no depth... and, and, and. Save your money. This will soon go down in price.

This game is so bare bones it's insulting. It's worth 30 bucks, not 60. Save your money and do not buy this game. It's just a multiplayer with terrible mechanics. There's no even playing field at all. Frustrating as hell. You're better off buying a different shooter.

The gameplay is extremely repetitive and has zero depth. After playing for a couple hours I had experienced everything. Not only that, but I was tired of experiencing the same things over and over again. The lack of a fantastic online experience mixed with no campaign or story mode to mix things up makes this game one of the shallowest that I have ever purchased. The skill level required to accomplish anything is set for 8 year olds. The tutorials are a joke, because nothing new is in this game that has not been in a thousand games before.

To go with the crappy game play is a host of bugs. Most notably is the constant server interruptions. During 3/5 games it will start to lag. EA was nice enough to include a warning that states that their own game is unplayable because their servers are messing up. Why not work on improving your servers instead of creating a message to describe why your game sucks?

People who are mad about the amount of content are blowing things way out of proportion. There a lot of different game modes and even though there are only 4 planets to play on there are 12 multiplayer maps. To put this into perspective, Halo 3 only had 11 maps at launch before DLC. Also I have seen some of the reviews say that there is no way to play single player. This is completely false. In mission mode you can play by yourself, or with a friend in co-op or online co-op. Its not a full campaign, sure, so I won't give it credit for being one, but to say it doesn't exist is just wrong.

I have also seen the complaint that the game doesn't feature different classes of soldier. This is true for the most part. You are either a rebel or a storm trooper. However, you can unlock specialty traits later as you progress to help specialize your character for a specific style of gameplay, but it is not a separate class.

The game runs smoothly, the sounds are amazing, and it looks beautiful. And on top of that the game makes you feel like you are in Star Wars, especially in the Fighter Squadron mode, or any time you pick up a hero token.

I'd like more single player stuff, and having different classes would have been cool, but overall the game is good. People have a lot of hatred for EA and DICE in their minds and it is clouding their judgment. People are acting like they were lied to, even though EA and DICE said for months leading up to release that this game was going to be multiplayer focused, but still people act like they were duped into buying this game. They need to take a step back and realize that this game is exactly what they said the game was going to be. This game is fun and worth the price.

    My problems with this game;

-The SW universe is a big one, EA/DICE managed to ignore 99% of it and only include a fraction of the OT locations (Hoth, Tatooine etc). -No classes. -No classes. I don't know what it is about EA/DICE, it could be sheer laziness or perhaps a pursuit of making everyone even on the battlefield that they neglect classes making for very dull game play. One of the great things of SWBF I&II is that each class had its own pros/cons meaning you had to work together as a TEAM in order to succeed. Now they have been replaced with cards which are abysmal.

No AI - really was the biggest failure of this game. EA's ego is that great they decided to remove bots and turn battlefront into another run of the mill competitive shooter. Bot support was the CORNERSTONE which made the original titles great. If you didn't play online, you could just create a game with bots and have a blast.

Audio - The sounds of the blasters and vehicles may be good but there's one thing I can’t stand. And that’s the 'Murica' dialogue EA infuses into every shooter it makes. They really do like to glorify war and SWBF is no different. You can't go 2 seconds without hearing someone shouting 'IM PINNED DOWN OVER HERE!' or 'MAN DOWN!'/'SUPPRESSING FIRE!’ It’s all just too serious and doesn't fit in with the star wars universe.

Vehicles - You can no longer just hope into a vehicle, they are power ups. Mind boggling how this ever made it past the drawing board.

Heroes - Not as many heroes as its predecessors.

No prequel content - Even if you hated the prequels you can't argue they gave us more vehicles/soldiers/planets to play with. EA cutting them from this game (probably to release as DLC) was woefully wrong to do so.

I could go on past the 5000 character max with everything that is wrong with this game. But I'm sure you've all been saturated with the pretty visuals / expensive DLC etc people have been noting about. At the end of the day, Battlefront I & II which came out over a decade ago are still more enjoyable than this piece of crap. I've said it before and ill say it again, EA obtaining the IP to SWBF was THE worst thing that could have happened to this series. No more than ever I really do feel for the free radical staff that had their product cancelled during development. It would have been far superior to this.

I find the sound scape is especially vibrant and like to just stop for a moment every once in a while to look at the environment including epic space battles going on above me.

I also haven't had a decent star fighter fix since rebel assault on the N64 either, so that's a big bonus.

I am subtracting one star for the blatant holding back of content for the season pass as it should just be included for the price!

For the people that wanted Star Wars COD etc, this may be slightly disappointing, but for me it's just what I needed.

The issue is that this game plays it safe and doesn't offer anything new in its core shooting gameplay. It ignores progress made in the genre and that's most upsetting. Casual players will have a blast but it really isn't for the rest of us in my opinion.

Multiplayer shooter designed primarily for Star Wars fans. Simpler than its genre competitors it is, but it’s open to players of all kinds - at the same time it is not for everyone because of that “anyone can play” approach. [Issue #259]

As close as you'll get to getting your childhood back. Dig through the incredible production values and you'll find a serviceable shooter, but one with a potentially terminal lack of content. [Jan 2016, p.73]
