This is one of the greatest games I have ever played. It is so fun and the fact that it's extremely open world is also amazing. The graphics are spectacular. Sometimes it can get annoying because you can't save in missions and some of those missions take so long. Sometimes the game is too 'hardcore' for me so I need a break but I truly believe its the best game ever created.

In Red Dead Redemption 2, you assume the role of the outlaw-gunslinger Arthur Morgan. Throughout the game you will have to make choices that determine the man Arthur is. The game is spread out through 6 chapters. The intro mission in Chapter 1 combines strong visuals, voice acting, phenomenal music, and gameplay elements that you will use throughout the game. Rockstar has set the bar for written narratives in not just video games, but in entertainment as a whole. Arthur is the trusted associate to the gang's leader Dutch Van Der Linde, whom we met in the first Red Dead Redemption game. You get to learn about all members in the gang, you talk to them, sit around campfires with them, and go out on missions with them. The game has some of the most memorable quotes from all of video games, and some amazing dialogue between Arthur and characters throughout the game. Rockstar has also set the bar for open world games. Many games have advertised their open world as a "fully breathing and living world", but they failed on that promise. Rockstar has completely nailed that aspect of delivering a true open world. You are able to interact with every single NPC in the game, with the option of "greet" or "antagonize". Every npc responds differently both initially, and after you interact with them. Rockstar has added such elements as, if you kill an npc their family members could come hunt you down, and if you kill someone an npc can respond to the blood on your clothes. You can go to the barber, go fishing, rob a man, save a man's life, go have a time at the saloon, and so much more. The game does have some gameplay issues though. Player movement can feel a little clunky at times, meaning you don't feel as comfortable moving around. The cover system can mess up at times, and really screw you over in a gunfight. The core system felt a little tedious at times, but never really never bothered me because provisions (which are needed to refill your 3 cores: health, stamina and dead eye) are really accessible. While riding your horse, to fall off and get yanked by trees, rocks, and other things in the environment. Many parts of the game would feel boring since you are just riding your horse around, but I really liked it when you were riding with fellow gang members because of the conversations you would have. Onto the positives about gameplay. Dead Eye returns from RDR, which is the ability to slow down time and mark enemies to fire all at once, and it is bad***. Gunfights are fun and some of the Arthur's sarcasm during the gunfights are hilarious. While riding your horse, you have the ability to press either square or x to jump on to someone else's horse. The way you can explore the environment, whom you come across, what you come across (such as a KKK meeting) is amazing. Rockstar has implemented thousands of secrets into the game, many will probably never be found until after RDR3 comes out. The elements of storytelling Rockstar implemented in the dialogue is astonishing, especially their use of foreshadowing and irony. Since this is a prequel to Red Dead Redemption, they set the bar for how a prequel should be done. Unlike the X Men movies or the Star Wars prequels, every single thing in Red Dead Redemption makes sense now. Rockstar connected these two perfectly. The way you play as Arthur Morgan, the you do everything with him, the way you decide who he is, the way you follow him through his journey, Roger Clark's performance as Arthur, easily makes him one of the greatest protagonists in all of gaming. Clark's acting in some of these cutscenes is amazing, and without going into spoilers, you won't forget this game. this review can't do justice to how amazing this game is, all I can say is, get the game (after watching or playing the first one), take your time, and you won't regret it. Despite some flaws in the gameplay, Red Dead Redemption 2 was an amazing ride from start to finish and one that I wish I could play for the first time again. Expand

There is nothing for me to hate about this game, it is dangerously immersive. The graphics are the best I have ever seen on the Xbox One X and they hold up to be way above average on the standard Xbox One. This game is like playing something from the future. It is based on hyper-realism, meaning that it will take you a while to ride to your destination if it is miles away, that's the point. The tiny details in the game all mount up to making the world around you feel alive. I'll list a few: Horses and NPCs don't respawn, there are no repeated character models. If one dies, it never comes back into the game. NPCs all have separate daily lives and friendship groups. (Youtube: Following NPCs around RDR2). Your horses balls shrink when its cold (yes there is a weather system with temperature that is location and time dependant). Bodies of animals and humans decompose over days. You need to eat, drink and wash. Your facial and head hair actually grows over time and you can keep it trimmed if you want to. If your hat gets shot off, there will be a bullet hole where it hit it for the rest of the game unless you buy a new one. You need to clean and maintain your guns to keep them shooting accurately. You have to feed and bond with your horse for it to fully trust and listen to you like in real life. New horses have to be broken in to be ridable like in real life. You carry guns realistically, not hiding them up inside your ass like in GTA. There is so much in this, it would be difficult to list them all. What i love even more, I have completed the game after about 120 hours and there is STILL loads of content that I didn't know about.

Conversations feel real, the story and voice acting is fantastic, the characters leave you feeling like they are actually in your life. There are moments where you forget you are playing a game. Honestly, If this was based around first-person then this would be dangerously immersive and I love that.

If you take gaming a bit too seriously like I do and want to get immersed inside a new world, then this is the best money you will ever spend.

I play games to get away from boring reality. This game has boring, time consuming chores, boring slow fishing, boring slow card games, real time theatre shows, slow laborious hunting, slow ass horse riding to get anywhere, slow animated cooking, slow animated cleaning, slow walking in camps. If I wanted to do any of that boring sh1t I would be actually doing it in real life, not playing video games.

I'm only half way through and I have gone from enjoyment at the beginning, to boredom, to actively being frustrated continually while playing the game.
Two guys picked a fight with me in a city, they opened fire with no provocation, I shot them, witnesses run screaming and 10 cops spawn in front of you down every street as you try and get away. finally escape with a $383 bounty now on your head, which takes approx 1000hrs to earn back looting people for .40cents at a time. finally pay off bounty, accidentally knock over random npc in the street and it all begins again.

Yeah the graphics are pretty, but the gameplay is the least fun and satisfaction i have had from a game in a long time.
I'm giving up on it for now. maybe they will patch it and make it a bit more enjoyable.
    Things it needs:
    Fast travel from anywhere.
No bounty, or way more loot so it is not so painful.
Better power curve- there is no progression after about 20%, you have everything decent.
Skippable cutscenes and animations. Faster animations.
More realistic police presence, the law is way too quick to the scene, coordinated, numerous and powerful.
No button press and hold delays, tap in rhythm to gallop everywhere etc, just more user friendly controls.
better inventory, everything is just so clunky and slow.
They seem to have made all the worst, most boring everyday stuff more realistic and slow, but made the law telepathic and able to appear in force anywhere on the map in moments. It takes you longer to wait for your horse to get to you and mount up, than a full posse of lawmen to track you down, even though you are ten a ten minute ride from any town, and start shooting, and when you shoot back, it costs you a fortune, and the cops are suddenly everywhere.
It's a frustrating game. You are apparently supposed to play like a good citizen, but the main story has you shooting up town after town, i just dont get the angle they are trying for. Confusing, aimless and frustrating.

Overall I want to say the gameplay is very clunky and litteraly unplayable. Is this game fun to play? yes if u like watching a movie and want to live inside a game and eat apples/feed ur horse and threathe it like an survival game.. Since this release of RDR2 I have no faith in rockstar games anymore, they will focus again on online, battle royale, and to make profit from it. My question is here: Do game companys care about gamers? No, only a few companys do but not the large ones anymore. They just want to see how much money u have in ur wallet, anyways the game red dead redemption 2 I was very hyped for is just a clunky, buggy open world game, without real living things and it is very very unoptimized, it feels like the game is released in beta/alpha state. The main character arthur morgan is okay, but very boring to play aswell, the huge problem with red dead 2 is that u cant play it as an ''GAME'', it is like an movie, because everytime when u want to start a mission u enter very long cutscenes, the only few things u do is shooting/ horse riding actually. Those meta scores of this game are way too overrated, im like serious 9,7 from 33 critics? did those reviewers got paid by rockstar? Gamers should rise up and stop those dumb ''casual'' game releases, what I want to say at last is : focus on this when u make an great game: Story > gameplay > open world > character design > mission design > and at the last GRAPHICS, GAMES are not about GRAPHICS, and YES im glad that God of War won the game of the year award, I would be ambarassed if god of war did not win the GOTY, because God of War is an REAL game, Not an MOVIE. In about 40 hours in to the game I woke up to a realization, that everything I've done so far wasn't very interesting. Rockstar tried to go with more realism with this one and implemented some survival elements but the problem is that if you don't sleep or eat or clean yourself it doesn't really matter. You can't die of hunger. I didn't eat anything during 67 hours of gameplay just to see if something happens. So the "survival" elements are there just to annoy you. If you shoot an opponent in the chest three times the bastard still keeps running around. In my books, that's not realism.

Gameplay is where rdr 2 doesn't shine. Arthur, your main character controls like a sack of snot. You move very slowly. You can't sprint in the main camp that works as a hub area that you can use to upgrade and restock your ammo and supplies, It's not tiny, the camp is actually quite a big area. This was a thing that almost made me quit. It's really that annoying so I tried to stay out of the camp as much as possible but you have to visit often to pick up missions. Shooting is allover the place. I can't hit anything. Had to turn on auto lock for aiming. Fast travel is very limited. You are forced to ride your horse almost everywhere. Horse controls aren't bad actually. It's fun to a certain point. After a while it just becomes a chore. Taking care of your horse is a big thing. You have to feed it and clean it so it stays healthy. Bounty system is a complete joke. Somebody attacks you out of nowhere and you can't defend yourself at all or you get a bounty. If you bump to somebody in a street, you get a bounty. If you kill somebody out in the wilderness there's always somebody to witness the crime. Doesn't matter if you shoot that one, another will pop out of nowhere so you have to kill that one too and it becomes an infinite loop. No matter what, you're going to get a bounty even in middle of nowhere.

    Very minor spoiler ahead!!!

Story and characters aren't very interesting. Basic western story that has been told many times before. I must admit tho. Certain saloon scene where Arthur is drunk as a skunk and constantly looses his friend Lenny, is the funniest thing I've seen in games for years. I was laughing so hard I almost shat my pants.

Graphics these days are a matter of taste. Everybody seems to like different things. This one looks very realistic. I can almost smell the horse sh't It's that good. The attention to details is uncanny. One thing that I don't like about this generation games is the color palette. Every game looks the same and colors are very dim or light or what ever. There seems to be very little of contrast and blacks are not blacks. Dark areas seem bright but they aren't?? Weird but I don't know how to quite describe it. Maybe it's a thing with hdr, I sure as hell don't know.

This game was in development for 8 years. It really shows in the detail and graphics department but what's usually missing in games today is also missing here which is good controls. Some game play aspects like aiming and the bounty system do need a lot of tweaking. I have no idea why people are calling this game groundbreaking and saying that it has changed gaming forever. Everything that's in this game has already been done better elsewhere. Don't get too hang up on my score. I actually don't know if I should give it 3 or 9. It's a weird mix of awesome in few things and a lot of.. meh.. in everywhere else. So if you like slow paced game play in a bad third person shooter where you have survival elements that don't matter and you hate fast travel and like western theme and wanna watch horses balls shrink in snow storm, then this game is right up your alley.

    Well fleshed out characters
An incredibly well-detailed world, very strong in this area
The animals in the game are superbly realised and make the world feel truly alive
Pretty good graphics for a console, doesn't seem too sluggish on XB1X in 4K HDR mode, but it's not as amazing as people are saying

    Cons:
Game is not really open world, story is on rails as are the side-quests. If you go off piste you fail quests, you cannot apply any creative thinking to the problems. So rather a dull experience.
Appalling control system; unintuitive, unresponsive, inconsistent use of controls, makes the game not worth playing for me. It's like playing something from 20 years ago on a PS2
Silly and laborious systems for inventory, weapons selection and item use, you end up fiddling about so much with the menus that your objective has run off by the time you're ready to do what you need to.
Endless cut scenes that take you out of the game and ruin the flow of play, you just think you are watching a bad 1970's cowboy film in Sunday afternoon
Constant talking from all around you that prevents you just getting on with things. I really could not care less if some dumb broad thinks I ought to take a bath or not. It's just tedious small-talk that does not move the game on. Seriously, whoever wrote the script for this really needs to understand those two key story-telling maxims, 'less is more' and 'show not tell'
Weak combat system that makes you avoid combat rather than actively embrace it
The game is a horse-riding simulator. It's so dull; ride, ride, ride, then spend 2 minutes doing some boring activity, then ride, ride, ride back, as there's no decent fast travel system. So you just ride over the same boring dirt tracks over and over and over and over. Yeah we get it, you're a cowboy, you ride a horse. Wow. Big deal.
Overly anal attention to detail about the most petty activities; picking weapons from a saddle bag, watching you skin the same animals hundreds of times over and over and over. You even have to make coffee to drink, seriously, this is the type of tedious activity I do at home before leaving for work, I don't want to spend my gaming time reliving the less exciting moments of my normal life. Playing this game is often like having a second job, but one that's actually less fun than my actual career.

Main issue is the control system, it's so bad, I can't believe they released the game like this. I use an XB1 controller a lot on the PC as it's the best controller going IMO, so I am used to gamepads, but I have not seen a gamepad control system implemented this badly in decades.

So a bit of a mixed bag, but if I'd paid for the game, I'd not be pleased. Can't see me moving to consoles for my gaming if this is the best that's on offer.

Games are meant to be given ratings based on how well they play and fortunately for RDR2/Rockstar, many players and reviewers have forgotten this. It's currently sitting with some of the best scores possible, while being fundamentally broken in many aspects...and that is almost hilarious.

The game is arguably gorgeous and there is plenty to do; large areas to explore, lots of people to interact with, a vast array of animals to hunt and resources to collect etc. Unfortunately the main controls and general gameplay are as archaic and badly executed as you could make them. General movement/horse controls and basic inventory/weapon selection makes you wonder if they have learned anything since RDR1, or just any other game in the industry.

Missions leave you stuck in the middle of nowhere without your horse or your equipment, which is probably a lesson in how important these elements are...but can be bypassed by a simple save and load to retrieve your horse. Getting on and off your horse seemingly resets Aurthur to whatever weapon it feels like. Walking around camps is a slow tedious chore. Poker games still last forever due to AI players being overly cautious, with very little payout for time wasted. Skinned animals drop into existence when an area is left and returned to. Dying just results in you being plonked somewhere nearby with a minor cash payment removed. it's all very shallow and either pointless, overlooked or poorly executed.

That's just a few examples, but it's a small sample of how a product can actually be a beautiful looking polished turd. It just gets some points for being that polished visually and for cinematic effect...the problem is the polish isn't where the game needs it. It's certainly no GOTY if you actually like good gameplay.

It's a too long and boring game with really bad mechanics and not too well created characters. The excellent things - graphics and details. This is my very first Rockstar game I've been playing in and the last one at the same time. I'm not convinced that they are good.

I had a ton of hope for this game but was overall disappointed. At 2-3 hours in I noticed that the game wasn't fun, and was borderline a chore to play. I was able to make my experience better by solely focusing on the main story, but even then the game's faults were at times glaringly obvious. It took me about 60 hours to complete the main story.

    Pros: Beautiful world Great main

    Pros:
    Beautiful world
    Great main story
    Good Immersion

    Cons:
You spend a ridiculous amount of time riding your horse from point A to point B.
The horse has no intelligence and will run headfirst into a tree or jump off a cliff to its death.
Game-play mechanics are clunky, especially in gunfights.
Animations for looting, skinning an animal etc take too long.
More often than not there is not enough time to loot enemies without failing your mission.
Weapon load-outs get reset every time you ride your horse.
Your active weapon gets reset every time you interact with an object.
Overly scripted and offers very little choice.
Situational restrictions on character actions break immersion.

Red Dead Redemption 2 serves as just what you would expect a sequel of the first game to be, but slightly worse.
Some of the things that are fantastic about this game are the graphics, sound design, music and world detail.
the things i think the original Red Dead Redemption did better are the cover system and the story, these may seem like minor things but honestly it isn't acceptable

some of the things that are just outright bad about red dead are the wanted system (it is inconsistent and often times makes absolutely no sense), the world sometimes seems to large and barren and the gunplay gets very boring very fast

One of the greatest, most emotional single player expereinces I've felt in a long time. A perfect blend between action and story. Only downside is the rough experience with online that I'm just going to ignore didn't even happen.

Easily without question in my top 5 best games ever played. A masterpiece. Almost all of the points made by bad or moderate user reviews are ridiculous and are either flat out wrong, are personal preference issues or are nitpicks.

I've had most of the rest of their games, and now fatefully RDR v1.2. The pent-up demand is what sold this game, NOT THE CONTROLS. The controls are horrendous. Simply horrendous. It's as if they did zero tuning/updating to the main core mechanics of movement/item pickup/weapon aiming or prior R* games and simply bolted on additional convoluted controls. Want to pick something up? Look around in a circle and walk back and forth and then maybe. Not always, for sure, but sometimes it is simply maddening. Even the controller scheme reference in the settings menu is irritating as it flashes between schemes/scenarios way too fast to make a mental snapshot.

Want to play poker, dominoes, or any other mini game? Be prepared to sit through repetitive time-consuming animations that suck the joy out of the process. I question if I expect too much detail in the scripted actions shown, and the answer is decidedly mixed. Some actions are highly detailed, others not so much - when it seems they could have been easily. The graphics of the physical world are great and plentiful, and with a variety unmatched by other open worlds. But - we play games for the fun and interaction. The controls spoil everything.

Want to start the next mission? Of course is in two towns over and requires riding there. Realism? Definitely. Belong in a game? No - it's just sooo boring and repetitive. Of course you can use Cinematic Mode, but you WILL be attacked along the way, and if your destination is a town, you can bet your horse will run into someone and get you a bounty needlessly, which in turn will lock down anything you wanted to do in that town until you pay off said bounty. That is if Cinematic Mode actually takes you to where you set your waypoint and not somewhere entirely different...

When following a NPC and avoiding detection/danger (which you will do A LOT), it is not always clear what the next action or location is to be as everything is scripted up to exactly where you have to walk to trigger the next process, which leads to replaying (at least there is finally a way to replay shorter sections/checkpoints of a mission or the ability to skip completely after three failures - a nice touch!). However, the score criteria on missions is unknown until you have completed the mission, giving you little chance to get a gold rating without playing through in its entirety at least twice.

And then there is saving your progress. Why is it saving is not allowed most of the time in this game? Some of these missions are so scripted (and boring!) that the inability to save is almost criminal. The Epilogue starts off being comprised of doing the most mundane and boring tasks that take forever and ever - and you can't quit because you can't save! It will finally autos save, but there is a caveat with that if you choose to load a prior point in the game and it prompts you to Autosave: if you allow the save it overwrites what you want to keep, and if you turn off the Autosave feature it will delete your last autosave anyway! Maddening!

Camera auto-leveling: Why, oh why, can't I dictate where my camera is pointing and when? Automatically resetting my view is a constant battle, and most FPS games moved past several years ago!

I realize this is a rambling review... There is just so many things wrong with this game that ruins what could have been a masterpiece - that I keep going back and adding sections to this diatribe. RDR2 Online is available to play (in beta) starting today. Don't care. There are other games to play that are actually fun.

One last parting thought: Ever wonder why some games are rated as excellent by the critics, but the user reviews are much more lackluster? Reeks of fanboy/financial incentives...?

    - too much horse. I got the white Arabian and it is fast. The problem with the horse is that aside from walking it is the only way to get to around (sure there is a train and stagecoach for city to city travel) but come on, do I really need to ride a horse for 5 IRL minutes so that I can go the next objective? Sure I get to see the "beautiful game", sure I can always stop and hunt or forage, sure there is always a chance at an ambush, race, or animal attack, but even with all of that. the travel feels daunting. I bet 20% of my game time has been riding a horse and doing nothing else.

    - slow and repetitive animations (walking in camp, picking up stuff or when stuff happens during missions). The game has no option to turn these off, so every time I pick up a plant I have to wait 1-2 seconds while the animation plays, same with every other action I do - and it adds up. If I forrage 1000 plants that is 16 minutes of IRL time watching the same animation at 1 second per animation, skin 100 animals that is 5 IRL minutes of watching the same animation (sure the animal in the scen and how the skinning is done varies but after the 20th time it all blurs into - I don't give a damn. Aside from the animations, the slow pace, in general, doesn't really trigger anything outside of frustration and boredom.

    - I feel like the game forces you to play the good guy - it rewards you by doing so (discounts in shops, no bounty hunters to harass you - which is a good thing as most of them are magical bounty hunters with teleporting abilities) and punishes you if you don't. The cost of being a criminal far exceeds the rewards.

These are a few of the constant annoyances. However, the main problem is, that it's not a real open world game. If you focus on the main story you will experience a linear and scripted game with almost no freedom. Every time you try something different the missions will fail - and if you have to repeat the mission many are scripted and you can't skip the slow-ass ride from point a to point b because the NPC has some important story to tell you about how their balls hurt when they were riding wagons in the winter (I don't care). If you don't do the missions or follow the story, well then you get what I got - 80 hours of slowly realizing how laborious the game is and how unfulfilling it is to continue playing.

In summary, RDR2 is an average game in an open world sandbox if you ignore the story and do whatever you want. However, doing whatever you want too early in the game limits you because you can't get some gear or rewards until you follow the storyline so then you end up with getting forced to follow the story just to get improvements you want. If you love the main story, the game provides maybe 15-20 hours of a very scripted and cinematic game with high production value. Both parts have average gameplay and problematic controls. The only highlights and reasons to play the game are its great graphics, atmosphere and story. Which for me was not enough to want to finish the game or keep playing, TBH even with my goal of not buying new games until I complete the ones I have, I will likely call RDR2 completed and not go back.

A good, but not excellent looking pseudo open world game, that has a poor game play and very bad control scheme. The degree of details is sometimes unbelievable. Also unbelievable is why the developers didn't put the effort in designing at least a playable control scheme.

I very often had the feeling that I am playing a re-skin of GTA V - this game is nearly 6 years old! There were games around 2000 that had better game play. The beautiful looking world does not respond or interact to players actions. Most of the time the player feels like the environment just there to look good. Weather does not have any effect on the players actions. Everyone who played games like Zelda BOTW knows what it means, if it is raining and you are trying to make fire. What about moving slower in snow? In RDR2 the weather does not have ANY effect on the environment.

Also the realism is a big problem in this game. Every review addresses the realism as the best part of this game and I think it is not. There are many situations were the realism is very close to reality, but the problem with too much realism is that you get very sensitive for things that do not act like in reality. There are several examples for this: riding on your horse for some time will make Arthur stow his guns in the saddle. Now if you jump of the horse you will instantly have your guns on the back again, but if you get into a gun fight while you are riding and you jump of the horse, you have to pick up all your weapons by your self!!! Another thing for example is that if you go to the receiver at emerald ranch to sell you plundered stuff in the night, he will stand in its shop but the interaction menu tells you you have to wait until tomorrow to be able to sell things... why is he even in his shop when he does not buy things from you????

I don't want to get too much into detail here since everything is already mentioned in the other reviews. In my opinion this game is no that innovative as it is presented by Rockstar and the bigger review websites. Most of the game is very retrogressive. For each mechanic in this game there are other games that do those mechanics way better! It is too slow, too time consuming and in no means rewarding for the spend time.

It doesn’t matter if you are gamer, a human being, or an alien from another planet; Red Dead Redemption 2 is a title that you just can’t miss. The bar set by RDR2 is so high that even Rockstar itself will probably have a hard time raising it. One of the best releases in the history of digital entertainment.

While it has some notable but minor flaws, it's hard to argue that Red Dead Redemption 2 is not a masterpiece. The end result of the meticulous detail, wonderful writing and stunning looks is an open world that sets a new bar for believability, and a time and place I can't stop thinking about or wanting to be a part of.
