It's realistic but to a fault. The game is just beyond boring. You're literally going to spend half your playtime riding around on a horse. The world looks nice, but when you're forced to admire it for 50 hours in order to get through the game, that's unacceptable. Combine that with the ridiculous online microtransactions, and this is one of the worst games I've ever played. Avoid!

Rockstar is very difficult to surprise the audience: the games of this company have a stable quality. And the quality is so high that every time you think unwittingly: they say, the next time the developers just somewhere so wrong. However, the company does not give up. Red Dead Redemption 2 was an exceptional Western, though not perfect.

A movie is more real than this game without sluggish and clunky interactions. I doubt there is any movie fan boy loving to see an actor repeatedly opening drawers thousands of times or walking 10 mins just to talk with somebody, but you have to do these stupid things on your own in this game! What's wrong with RockStar?

It's okay to dislike the game, but anyone who gives this below a 7 is just ignorant. I disliked Prey and Bloodborne for example, but still recognize them as being around an 8 or a 9. It's a fricking simulator. The honor/outlaw system is broke. A guy attacks you, you beat his ass and suddenly you're the bad guy. Riding your horse is annoying as hell. They either never stop moving when you wanna stop or they slow down when you wanna keep moving. The camp system is even more annoying. You gotta keep going back to your camp to get quests and to turn in supplies but you CAN'T FAST TRAVEL! FFS, I don't have time to spend 30 minutes running back and forth to do this stupid crap, just let me fast travel you crappy game! Your horse is never around when you need it, either. I spent 30 minutes trying to find my horse only to steal someone elses by accident, then I got a bounty and had to reload. Then later when I just finished a storyline quest that afterwards, even though there were NO WITNESSES I suddenly had a bounty. So, of course bounty hunters kept coming and my bounty kept getting higher & higher to the point where I had to just shut the damn game off to end this stupid charade where the asses just kept coming after me. It's annoying as hell when I am trying to do something but the game just keeps shoving **** in my face forcing me to do what it wants me to do instead of what I want to do.

This game has only enraged me in it's bad design and gameplay. Stupid hype, stupid fake reviews, I should have never bought this trash. It's not fun, it's annoying and just serves to make me angry.

Just finished the entire story after taking just over 50 hours. This is by far the best game I have played in years. I will start right now and say that anyone complaining about pacing/being bored, is conditioned for brainless, fast paced shooters or arcade style games. Yes, RDR2 is meticulous, slow-paced, and very drawn out. But that works to the game's benefit. Don't go into this gameJust finished the entire story after taking just over 50 hours. Sit down and expect to immerse yourself in a world that's not a battle royale or team deathmatch (although I'm sure they're coming). The detail in this game is beyond impressive, and the landscape itself is absolutely breathtaking. I will agree it takes a bit to get going, but it's mostly just the intro tutorial, which I'd still prefer over most any other tutorial I've played through. The story is amazing as well. Arthur is a very compelling character, who I would put on a pedestal in the gaming world next to characters such as Master Chief and Lara Croft. I loved playing as him, more than I enjoyed playing as John in the first RDR. Overall, I had a blast playing through this game. I can't wait for online to release. Congratulations Rockstar, you've done it again. Expand

Red Dead Redemption 2 is an exceptional example of modern video game design, but it is also far from the infallible masterpiece many claim it to be. Several nagging issues detract from what is otherwise a great game.

To start, I want to say that this game has a target audience. Rockstar has not tried to "cast the widest net" with RDR2. If you find much of your gaming time filled with fast-paced, hectic, reflex-based games like CoD, Battlefield, PUBG, Fortnite, Assassin's Creed, Fallout, Spider-Man, God of War, or Overwatch, then it is unlikely that you will find much enjoyment in RDR2. Likewise, if you think the game will be "GTA V, But Cowboys" then you are in for a quite disappointing revelation. The gameplay is slow, weighty, and methodical. It will take you a *minimum* of 10 minutes to cross from one side of the map to the other. There is no easily accessible fast-travel mechanic. If your preferred gameplay is "press A to attack, press B to block" simplicity and zero-gravity, weightless characters that walk faster than Usain Bolt sprints, you are better off spending your money elsewhere.

With that out of the way, I'll do my best to dig into what RDR2 is at its core. You can't merely categorize this game as a third-person shooter, an adventure, an RPG, or even simply an action game. It's not even necessarily a mix of those genres, but a unique beast. Personally, I consider the game to be a "Narrative Driven Sandbox" of sorts. The story is undoubtedly paramount and always present, but it isn't something that bars your path to content. While story progress does unlock new items and weapons, you can also find these same items in the world through side-quests and exploration. The majority of the map is entirely open for you to explore as soon as you finish the scripted intro sequence, minus a few areas (more on that later).

The gameplay itself is, for the most part, satisfying and enjoyable. Gunplay is heavy and punchy, with a focus on realism (Pull RT once to fire, Pull RT again to cock the hammer, repeat) that blends into the action fairly seamlessly. Arthur feels like he has some weight to him as he moves, like a human being walking across a room rather than a figure skater gliding on ice.

Visually, the game is stunning, even on my OG launch Xbox One. Every aspect from the wind blowing through the grass on the prairie to snow drifts being broken up as a horse passes through is well designed and executed. Facial animations are some of the best I've seen in recent years. And all of this graphical beauty has little effect on performance. Aside from a few cutscenes and more "urban" areas, my framerate held constant with only minor dips in the aforementioned circumstances.

Unfortunately, the game struggles in most other departments. For me, the pacing was the biggest issue. The game's opening is *agonizingly* slow paced. It feels like a chore to get through the first quarter of the game. From there, things pick up nicely, and the pace is almost on the verge of being "good" through the midgame. Unfortunately, as the game reaches its final few acts, the story's pace slows to a dragging crawl once again. By the last few missions, I found myself simply rushing through, asking myself "So, this is the last one right? It feels like the last one." only to be surprised (dismayed?) at the new yellow quest marker appearing on my map. The Epilogue was no better, equally slow and poorly paced. While the writing itself was quite good, it was irreparably hurt by the weak story direction and drag-on chapters.

The game's AI is also severely lackluster. While it is better than GTA V's to a degree, you will always have the upper hand in any conflict. Enemies rarely seek cover, rifle-wielding bandits/lawmen charge into close range instead of taking distance shots, and they will often shoot at your cover until their weapons run dry, giving you ample time to peek out and dispatch them at your leisure. Pedestrian AI is equally poor, mainly the AI responsible for wagons and horsemen. I can't count the times I've been thrown from my hose due to an NPC veering in front of me as I was about to pass by.

And lastly, the endgame is very disappointing as well. Without spoiling too much, after the story you are still permitted to roam the map and do side quests, with a few changes. I don't care for these changes, but that's just preference. The problem is that the previously inaccessible portion of the map is now "unlocked" to explore. Unfortunately, it's pretty much empty. There is quite literally nothing to do. Perhaps this will be fleshed out with Red Dead Online, but right now it's simply a waste of map and Hard Drive space.

And that's RDR2 for you. Despite these flaws, it is still worth a playthrough if it sounds like your cup of tea. A good game, and one I certainly recommend, but far from a perfect game and indeed no masterpiece. My rating would be 7.6/10 (rounded to 8 due to site limitations)
