Red Dead Redemption 2 might be first game I came across this generation where I can honestly give it a 10 and not come up with any reasons why it shouldn't be a 10. Know what I mean? For example when God of War released I gave it a 10 but there was a voice in the back of my head that would come up with reasons it doesn't deserve a 10, but it absolutely did. Know what I mean? For example when God of War released I gave it a 10 but there was a voice in the back of my head that would come up with reasons it doesn't deserve a 10, but it absolutely did. I did not get that at all with Red Dead. The giant and gorgeous open world is breath taking. That may sound cliche' but I honestly have NO IDEA how Rockstar made everything look SO damn good. The lighting, the shadows, the way the sun pierces the clouds, to the thunderstorms coming from a distance that you can literally see rolling over the hills. It should be illegal how good this game works, and that's an understatement. Some may feel like the world is a bit empty but it really needs to be in some cases. It makes you feel like you are roughing it out in the wilderness, with no one around for miles. Combat is super fun, and of course dead eye is back with a vengeance. This sounds super crazy I know but please before you completely disregard my review hear me out. RDR 2 reminds me so much of Metal Gear Solid 5 TPP, but with a much more coherent story. What I mean by that is like in MGS5 you have a base, or in RDR's case a camp which you can donate money to to upgrade it by adding additional supplies, lodging, ammunition, etc. Before each mission start you choose a load out by standing next to your horse and opening saddle bags to show your inventory. Since you can't carry everything on Arthur (the protagonist) you leave most of it for your horse to carry. A small piece of advice: Upgrade the camp as soon as possible so you can unlock fast travel. If you don't you will have a lot of long horse rides which honestly didn't bother me at all but I kept getting side tracked for hours, so if you are like me you probably want a good way to get about without being sucked into whatever instance out in the wilderness. The attention to detail here would give The Witcher 3 a run for it's money, its insane. You'll be able to figure that out for yourself just by looking up at the sky lol. Combat is super fun and can sometimes be incredibly intense, if not a little sluggish. You know, the normal GTA type character movement. The only gripe I could possibly come up with is the UI. The weapon/item wheel can be a bit confusing, especially while on the horse, but it just takes a bit getting used to. It's not completely un-wielding. Anyway, I don't want to give too much away so I will stop now. What I will say is that I can absolutely guarantee that if you see someone give this game a 1, they are completely and utterly garbage, and have no business writing reviews. I can understand people that just didn't like the game, but to give it a 1? I know no one takes those people seriously (at least anyone even slightly intelligent) but it's just sad to see. SSSSSOOOOOOO much work went into making this game and even though I don't always agree with the direction Rockstar goes sometimes, they always find a way to go above and beyond for every release. Red Dead Redemption 2 truly exceeded even the highest exspectations and proved that Rockstargames still holds the title of being #1 at creating immersive and innovative open-world games. Red Dead Redemption 2 is an experience like no other. This is the game of the generation.

Writing this review pretty much to try and balance out at least 1 of the fake reviews or PC users that are raging because it isn't out on PC.

Not fair whatsoever to this fantastic game or the devs.

Terrible game, controls are awful, boring gameplay, I don't normally write reviews but I feel very angry with all the hype used to get people to buy this game.. Am shocked by the total lack of integrity show by so called professional reviewers. Looking forward to cyberpunk 2077, I suspect it will be 10 times better, Rockstar are all mouth and no trousers, as usual..

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Good:
    1. It looks nice I suppose though its not better than any other AAA open world game I've played in recent years
    2. Collecting Bounties are fun but they are just a fetch quest.
    3. The cores system combined with the food is nice however it quickly became apparent that it was better to manage it through tonics and just eat to keep at the right weight.
    The Bad
    1. The story. i'm almost done with chapter 2, so far i dislike the people the game has me interact with and i'm already hoping the gang fails. I dread going to that stupid camp full of horrible people asking you to do there work for them
    2. The combat. Boring cover based shooter but without proper aiming, think a less imaginative gears of war one
    3. The World. Empty and not in a good way. In a why does every town feel like there's no one there way. There's just a few people to sell you stuff and normally one person just saying or shouting the same few sentences over and over again and as there is only life in the towns you hear it a lot
    4. Riding my horse around to get to somewhere has quickly become the most boring thing i have done in a game. I'm not a fan of holding A for 20 mins for 5 mins of game play the another 20 mins of holding A to get back to civilisation and any thing to do, its just boring
    5. No reward for exploration, I've spent about five hours riding around exploring the world and my main memory of it was just sitting there holding A for hours with nothing much to do there are some people in the world that wanted help but that quickly became repetitive and boring again.
    6. I don't like playing the bad guy, i thought you where actually going to be seeking redemption like in Red Dead Redemption 1" this leads to many thing that I see as options being completely ignored because i have no interest in them, also my character isn't very nice. I find it hard to play a game where I dislike the person I play as.
    7. Nothing ever really gets explained properly. For instance in Chapter two there as a quest to get a legendary bear. you can chose to go after it or leave it( The games way of telling you that pictures of animals on the map are locations where you can find legendary ones). I want after it killed it then chucked it on my horse and spent 20 mins holding A to get back to town to sell it for some major money to find that no one wanted it. OK I thought to camp it must be a crafting thing. Lets hold A and go there. Nope no one hear wants it, by this point i'm starting to think it just a game object and doesn't have a use so i look online find there's a trapper that can be found in 3 different locations. the next 3 hours is spent holding A looking for him. That's just not fun game-play for me

    Other Issues

There where a few glitches but I expect that. Mirrors went crazy at one point. Game objects kept going black at certain angles.

You can climb up but as far as I can tell you cant climb down leading to some annoying deaths

I think you're meant to bond with your horse but they have stats so there treated like changeable parts and as soon as I find a better one I swap. Give me a horse close to the beginning that has the potential to be one of the best horses in the game if i stick with it then I might care but until I find one that's maxed out whats the point i'm going to sell it as soon as i find a better one

You may find different but i just find it a bit boring. It has the sense of a tech demo to it, arr look how big and beautiful our world is with it's "immersive" animations and story telling.

    Hopes

Online. its all its got left, I hope it plays like a full on MMO with character creation, fast travel, ability to join the law or a gang, you're own camp with people you recruit rather than that horrible dutch guy and his mates. I was looking for a full on single player game that I could spend hours doing stuff in. I got a sparsely populated horse riding simulator with an arcade combat system and I'm now hoping for a full online game because unfortunately there attempts at a single player experience haven't really worked. At least not for me. It feels like an really badly written 80 hour cowboy movie where all the extra time is spent just watching one silent person sit on a horse and ride around

The searching and looting is long drawn out and clearing up the loot after a big showdown (Black Belle for example) takes way too long. Walking around inside buildings looking for things to loot and open up - again, takes too long. I get that the developers wanted things to move at a slower pace compared to their mainstay GTA, but this is way too slow...….. Getting from A to B is also laborious with POIs and quest markers miles apart. I've played around 8 hours and feel like I've achieved almost nothing.....Yes, I have likely only scratched the surface of the game but 8 hours into a storyline? I should be well embedded in it by now. Expand

It is the feeling of realism that makes RDR2 such a great game.

RDR2 goal is to show you the hard life of an outlaw in these days. It does this with the story missions but the real strengh of RDR2 is how it does this with the world Rockstar created. And what a world this is.

    Masterpiece!!

Coming off 120 hours of AC Odyssey (where I had to stop because I was doing really menial tasks, even though I enjoyed it), I am shocked at slow and dull this is. This is not open world. It's so structured and the tasks so boring, the character controls so poorly designed. Looks great, but this is not a video game in any sense. It's almost a game of QTE pretending to be a video game.

My disappointment in Red Dead Redemption 2 stems from the assumption that the sheer extravagance of its excesses bears some sort of inherent artistic value. You're just left with a labyrinthine chore of an open world that repeatedly undermines its own intent.

RDR2's gorgeous expanse is irredeemably cheapened by a mistaken belief that "more" equates to "depth." All of the detail is wonderful and beautiful to experience and look at, but once the novelty wears off, a creeping, empty joylessness settles in instead. Throwing in pointless **** is not what makes a virtual world feel like a lived-in experience. RDR2's selective realism shatters all illusion that its obsequious fetish for detail contributes to immersion in its story.

I also love how intricate the features are such as being careful when running downhill as a single trip and fall could seriously injure you or kill you and the game has you nurturing your bond with your horse as you carefully explore the huge landscape trying not to accidentally injure or kill it all the while keeping yourself, your camp and your horse clean, well fed and staying in good health.

It's all wonderfuly oldschool where it demands patience from you so you can really appreciate this wonderfully realized world, it's slow paced but held together with deep and well done mechanics where every action feels meaningful and weighty. The attention to detail in absolutely everything will astound you and the atmosphere in this game will stay with you forever.

My only negative so far is that we had to wait for so long for this kind of gaming experience, RDR2 is a whole new type of open world game which only very few devs can deliver. It will be very interesting to see how Cyberpunk 2077 holds up after experiencing RDR2.

Just imagine all the best westerns you've ever seen such as Once Upon a Time in the West, Tombstone, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Unforgiven, Appaloosa, Open Range, The Hateful Eight, Blackthorn, 3:10 to Yuma, True Grit, A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More etc and you've summed up what you're getting with RDR2.

I don't understand these low ratings these days, the internet became very toxic. A lot of reviews are put down here on purpose to lower the user score. That is really sad. The game is not overrated, because.... let's be serious... it doesn't get any better than this. The graphics, the music, the characters, all the things you can do... it's almost unlimited in possibilities! THIS is what gaming is about. Rockstar raised the bar... it's simpel as that.
