Ori and the blind forest is a beautiful game, with a simple but amazing story, and it takes a lot of mechanics of other good games like guacameele and rayman, makin the gameplay one of the best platformers in this new generation.

    AN EXERCISE IN PERFECTION

Admittedly, Xbox One hasn’t had a lot going for it so far — with the exception of Sunset Overdrive, the Microsoft exclusive titles have either come hand in hand with scandal or have been subpar. What’s worse, it is well noted how nearly every multi-platform game runs better on PC and PlayStation 4. With all of that said, no one game has single-handedly turned around my opinion of a console and its future than Ori and the Blind Forest.

If you are going in blind (excuse the pun), Ori and the Blind Forest is a “metroidvania,” puzzle platformer with some light action and RPG elements. You play as Ori, a Forest Spirit, who was separated from the Spirit Tree early on. After being raised by the motherly Naru, the forest began slowly withering away. Before long, Naru succumbs to sickness and hunger and Ori is an orphan once again. With the help of an accompanying forest spirit (Sein), Ori is tasked to return the Three Elements of Light (Water, Winds, and Warmth) to bring
    balance back to the forest.

Moon Studios without a doubt knows how to tug on the heart strings — if you aren’t welling up in the first 15 minutes, I honestly doubt your humanity. Thanks in part to the beautifully orchestrated score and fantastic art style, Ori and the Blind Forest brings to mind a Pixar movie. Throughout the seven hour playthrough, I got chills from the beautifully narrated story about family and sacrifice. Sure, the story has its platformer tropes (collect three orbs to unlock three temples to save the world), it is presented in a fresh and interesting way that felt like a perfection of a genre instead of a copy.

While I can talk at ends about the storyline, it would be for naught without matching gameplay and level design. Impressively, both of these elements are just as masterfully executed. Like any other metroidvania title, the protagonist starts off weak and with a limited area to explore. Each power up you grab opens the path to a larger selection of collectables and more difficult sections of the map until the world is at your fingertips.

While this recipe is tried and true, Ori and the Blind Forest brings substantial improvements to the formula. Nearly all of the powerups add to the platforming elements, making it a joy and a breeze to get across the map. For instance, the Bash ability gained halfway through the game lets you slingshot off enemies and their projectiles. Even better, slingshotting these projectiles can help open paths or take down those same enemies.

Upgrades are given liberally through an XP system found in scattered collectables or earned by killing enemies. Up until the last second I was earning upgrades and feeling noticeably stronger.

While all the platforming and gameplay feels great, prepare to die. Alot. In my seven hour playthrough I died exactly 223 times (according to the leaderboards), and that is on the low end of the spectrum (other reviewers racking up in excess of 500 deaths). While the game has an achievement for beating the game in under three hours and one for a zero death playthrough, I doubt very many will be able to accomplish that.

Thankfully, the game implements a smart quick save/checkpoint mechanic. As long as you aren’t around enemies and have enough energy, Ori will be able to create a Spirit Flame, instantly logging the progress and allowing for upgrades. While this doesn’t make the game easier, it makes the difficult sections easier to swallow.

There are minor blips on the radar that draw away from perfection, specifically a few framerate problems, the inability to re-enter locations for 100% completion, and bizarre difficulty spikes. However, the game is so polished and these issues are so sporadic, they were never able to ruin my enjoyment of the game.

I am always hard pressed to believe the “hype” about games, however Ori and the Blind Forest is one of the best games to come out this generation, let alone on any Xbox platform. The game finds a perfect balance that both newcomers and long time gamers will enjoy, making it easily recommendable to everyone. While the game borrows from a tried and true formula, every mechanic feels fresh and polished largely thanks to the orchestrated music and stunning world. Ori is a gem that should be on everyone’s short list of “must play” games, especially at its $20 price tag.

The soundtrack and art style are both phenomenal. You could be forgiven for thinking they were all produced by a single person, such is the unity in vision between the multitude of individuals and the two studios involved. Packed with this is a simple, yet impactful story that tries and unexpectedly succeeds at tugging at the heartstrings.

The game can be finished within anywhere from 6-12 hours depending on skill level and is a wholly satisfying, contained experience that you can walk away from at the end feeling like you got your money's worth.

Finished the game in 6:57. A completely insignificant completion time from someone who was moderately invested in learning the mechanics.

The environment surrounding you reacts to your every move, and the background parallax effect is breathtaking. Even just moving and jumping around is pure joy, thanks to the smooth and responsive character animations. The music is absolutely wonderful and fits the mood of the game at all times. The sound design is also impeccable; I got chills every time I learned a new ability. The story is simple yet incredibly well executed and very touching. It really pulls you in and motivates you to save the forest.

Ori and the Blind Forest is a metroidvania platformer, so you progressively unlock new abilities that allow you to go to places you couldn't reach or access before. Backtracking never felt tedious to me in this game, because it's mostly up to you as a player. You don't have to go back and collect all the secrets and uncover the whole map, but doing so is extremely satisfying.

What I especially adore about the game's flow is the absence of hand-holding. This is a game that respects your intelligence as a player and your ability to figure things out on your own. The game may guide you subtly, but it never explicitly tells you what you need to do. Instead, it uses clever level design to introduce new gameplay mechanics to you. It all feels very instinctive and natural.

There's a simple but very welcome level-up system, with 3 perk trees that gradually improve your character's current abilities in a different way or add convenient info to your map. You get XP orbs every time you kill an enemy, and some bigger XP orbs are hidden in secret locations, so this gives you another incentive to kill enemies and explore the map. Plus, it improves the sense of progression and gives you that nice RPG feel of choosing what perk tree you level up first.

Heck, even the saving system is cool and exciting. The game doesn't save automatically for you; you have to do it manually by lighting a kindle. This can cause some really intense moments, and it punishes players for being too reckless. The difficulty curve is also perfect; the whole game offers a solid challenge, but if you remember to save often, it's still quite forgiving.

By the way, this game has no loadings, so the fun never stops and the sense of immersion is never interrupted.

I believe this is gaming at its finest. Truly a masterpiece in game design, and my personal favorite game of the year so far.

Not a perfect 10, because the game definitely rides some of the typical platforming tropes, such as unlockable areas via abilities and the like. It's more of a refinement of an existing genre that a unique experience. I'll say they pulled it off among the best in the genre though.

Overall, I cannot recall being this invested in a game as much as I am this one, because - I actually have an emotional attachment to Ori - and the forest he used to call home. That story element drives you to further enjoying the game - even if the gameplay doesn't completely separate itself from others. Moon knew this and executed on your emotions, generating a mystical and somber environment to engage the player with.

The game eases the player into the ever-increasing skillset, but before long, you will have to be creative, reactionary, and patient to master this challenging game. This difficulty, while harsh, rarely seems unfair, and creates a very rewarding experience once mastered. You create your own checkpoints, so the game is great to play at your own pace. Also, when respawning after a death, there is no loading time, so dying doesn't feel frustrating or tedious. Taking the best of Rayman Origins/Legends and Metroidvania style games, you have to revive the forest after Kuro's blind hatred led her to destroy it. The story's simple yet moving, especially with the perfect soundtrack that lives up to even classic sound tracks.

The game play feels a bit like recent Rayman games mixed with the exploration and power up finding game play of classic Metroid, taking Ori from a flimsy little wisp of a creature to one that can blast through rock, jump off projectiles (sending them back at enemies) and so on, though you always remain somewhat flimsy and easily killed, making the game quite difficult in places.

You can create a save point almost anywhere in the game, but you can't get complacent for even a moment, or risk getting sent back to your last save.

There are some niggling gripes I have with the game. There's no way to teleport around the map so if you're looking for the last few power ups, you have to manually walk there (though the map's not so big it's unreasonable, just a bit annoying with your flimsiness), you can't return to dungeons after finishing them (so anything you left in there is lost forever once you've done the climactic escape each dungeon has) and you can't return to the world once you've finished to explore more, your save effectively being locked completely.

Even so, for £15 you can't go wrong at all with this little gem and I'd recommend it to anyone.

I mean modern game that might be considered of the same genre with similar art design/storytelling, but nails gameplay and exploration way better, Hollow knight. So I would say ori is mediocre with some good presentation but lacking in more engaging gameplay and exploration for this type of game Expand

Ori and The Blind Forest is without a doubt in my mind one of the most strikingly beautiful games I've ever played. Its visuals are vibrant and rich, its music soothing and ethereal, and its gameplay is interesting and a bit challenging.

Normally I don't like to play difficult games or games that cause me to want to go crazy, but this game is absolutely worth the challenge. Every time I fail to make a jump or get taken out by an enemy, I don't blame the game;I blame myself and aim to perform better the next time, feeling relief when I finally get enough precision to complete the task at hand.

Its light RPG elements are a welcome familiarity in this very alien forest, and it helps that the game promotes exploration, making me want to look around for ways to make Ori better at combat and traversal of the land. It helps make it feel as if Ori is learning from experiences in the forest and backtracking to put the abilities to use doesn't feel jarring.

The story is presented in an interesting manner and I definitely feel it, running through several different emotions(so I won't spoil what they are). The story is quite the fascinating one, and definitely a great backdrop for the title.

All in all, I can't think of anything that would take away from this game. It is a MUST PURCHASE. Absolutely worth the value, has speed running and take your time potential, and is definitely my favorite game in 2015 thus far.

Everyone should give this a chance if they can handle the difficulty. Definite 10/10 for the content and value.

For a game that is bueatifully made with greate gameplay, it suffers from glitches that will erase your last save. I was hours into the game and the next time I loaded it, it was from a save I made days before hand. Once I can play without risk of my time being wasted again, I will update. Until then I suggest you either play this game when you have all day to play and beat it or waitFor a game that is bueatifully made with greate gameplay, it suffers from glitches that will erase your last save. One of the best Xbox one games. Amazing graphics, soundtrack and an emotional story. The puzzles are very interesting and well balanced. I hope more Ori in the future.

    Cons:
    Enemies are too similar
    Some clipping issues at times
    Handful of tough achievements/trophies

As this game is a few years old, it’s well worth picking up as it is generally always on sale for a good price. Definitely value for money.

Above all else, Ori and the Blind Forest is a beautiful game, with occasional moments that elevate it beyond most games out at this time. The visuals are beautiful and make the Metroidvania style world very gripping to explore. Not to mention, they also perfectly complement the surreal moments in the story and more outlandish things in the game itself. Nothing to me is more jarring than a gritty and realistic game attempting to sell a completely unrealistic mechanic or story moment. The only game I can think of which successfully uses a realistic artstyle while also managing to ground the ridiculous things in its world feel grounded and real is Horizon: Zero Dawn, however that is one game in thousands which does it correctly. Similarly, the soundtrack in this game can bring even the dullest moments to life. The strongest moments in this game, come at the beginning and at the end, but in the middle is really where the game started to fumble for me. In the very beginning it's simple and uncluttered, and allows the thematic beauty, quality platforming, and exploration to shine through. The Ginso Tree is a perfect example of this. The player starts the level with extremely simple mechanics and controls, but the 'bash' ability completely changes the dynamic of the level, and introduces an incredible new aspect to the combat and to the platforming. By the end of the game, on the other hand, the controls are more complex, but they are easier to handle because the player has been using them all game, and this allows for more complicated level layout and design that doesn't feel as chaotic as certain parts in the middle of the game. After the player learns a few new abilities, Ori begins to lose that simple and pure aspect that it used so well early on. The new moves learned throughout the game lose the impact that learning the earlier moves had because they are so plentiful, and there is barely enough time to learn Ori's current set of abilities. Each button does something unique as opposed to a more simple Metroidvania like Hollow Knight, with one button to attack and another to jump, and it forces the player to earn new moves slowly, instead of constantly throwing them at the player one after another like they mean nothing. Despite the hiccups caused by the cluttered controls and over-saturation of mechanics, by the end of the game, Ori and the Blind Forest regains its focused, tight feeling, and in the absence of trying to remember all of the controls, I once again found myself absorbed into the world and engrossed into the experience of this game. All in all Ori and the Blind Forest, despite feeling a bit messy at times, delivers an experience that I look forward to playing again. After playing this I am beyond excited for Will of the Wisps, and I’m going to give Ori and the Blind Forest a 7 out of 10. Expand

The game itself is a platform without more, quite fast, with the typical story of light VS darkness.

Graphically it is beautiful, very colorful, with great contrasts in the same plane, but what gives a feeling of playing something that does not have all 2D platform games is the soundtrack, the perfect companion for the story, a soundtrack where Melodic wins the story itself that

819 Deaths and 9.5 Hours. Yeesh! Despite being very highly recommended. I really had to force myself through this game.

The story centers around a small rabbit-looking creature who has to do something about a darkness in a forest. Honestly, it was a really artsy story that didn't make much sense to me. It's the type of story that you have to research on the internet to understand.

The animation was pretty standout, particularly the big owl that tries to eat you all the time. They clearly put a lot of work in to it, but it's tough to get around the frustrations of the gameplay.

Ori was an immensely difficult game for me to finish. It reminded me quite a bit of Limbo or Unravel as far as the gameplay was concerned. You move from screen to screen figuring out where the game wants you to go by dying over and over trying to do the wrong thing. Some sections are timed and seem impossible at first, but after many (many) attempts you eventually get through and soon there will be another section that seems even more frustrating than the last one.

There are a few actions that cause checkpoints, but for the most part you have to create your own respawn points. Which sounds great-until you stumble into another impossible section, die, and have to trudge all the way back only to find you don't have enough energy to make a new save point.

The controls also seemed very inconsistent for me. One attempt you could jump to a certain ledge, only for the next attempt to make the jump or glide a little too short. Or the irritating auto target would leave you floating in the air like Wile E Coyote instead of latching on to an enemy. The game is against you at every step of the way.

All of this to say-This type of game wasn't for me. People love games that punish them (I.e Dark Souls) and this brings that style to the platforming genre. The only reason for the long winded explanation is to save people like me from the frustration of playing this game. If you're looking for a challenge to overcome and a story that is more artistic than traditionally entertaining and easy to follow, this would be the game for you.

Ori and the Blind Forest is still enjoyable, obviously…it's just that those strengths are so strong that it's hard to imagine what would've been needed for that one ever-so-slightly-weaker element to match up with them. Nonetheless, it's still one heck of an accomplishment, and it's well worth your investment.
