First of all I have never played a monster hunter game, so I didn't know what to expect. So far I have put 15 hours into the game and it's brilliant! Don't go into this game comparing it to dark souls or the witcher, it's easily able to stand as a game on its own. Expand

What a great entry to the series. Finally one of my favorite series comes to my favorite console. Only a no heart, machismo ridden dudebro would pass this up because.. the cats are too cutesy? You can jump on the backs of dragons, stab them repeatedly and then carve up their carcasses for parts to TURN THEM INTO WEAPONS AND ARMOR. Sounds pretty manly. I think the average Xbox user really just can't get beyond Halo, Madden, Forza, Cod, etc. Shame, really. I'm sure the learning curve has a lot to do with it. The guys (I know their guys, come on) that said they returned it after an hour or two... you can't even scratch the surface or settle on a weapon you prefer (if it's your first MH title) in that time. Funny that the guys that hate this also seem to hate the Souls games. These games aren't that hard but it's ok to admit that's why you don't like them.

I had my doubts leading to release, hearing about how they gutted the series. Dumbed it down. As someone who's played and enjoyed on the PSP, 3DS and WiiU, I can tell you that isn't the case. Yeah, you have unlimited uses of your whetstone, fishing rod and net. But those are minor quality of life improvements that you will appreciate. And the scoutflies can lead you to things. But they won't lead you directly to that big monster the first time you need to kill it. Or directly to some other objective you have to find. You still have to pay attention.

The game looks and plays great. A welcome addition to my Xbox library. So happy Capcom decided to go multiplat with this.

Terrible game, requested a refund from Microsoft after playing it. Gameplay is boring, controls are strange, and the graphics are horrible, the overall contrast and washed out colours is ugly, and the weapon design is stupid. The game is so slow at the start with endless cinematics, and even though I love action RPGs this game is clumsy and unrewarding to play, the camera angle is often bizarre and shifts randomly. No idea why it is getting high scores, it does not deserve it.

Personally, I really, really hated it so scored 0, nothing really original and all the complexity ruins an action RPG. It's very simple a game is either an action RPG or an RPG if you mix the too, it tends to be a bad idea unless you really work to get the balance exactly right. DS1 managed it well, 2 and 3 were on the cusp of getting it wrong, Monster World messed it up completely. However, to be honest I have never liked Capcom games, I just hoped this would be something special. So disappointed!

Overly Childish, with terrible multiplayer and online features. If you are thinking a group "Dark Souls" or anything similar, think again.

    Avoid.

Hi there,, I just returned this game. I saw these awesome reviews and thought that I would also enjoy this masterwork. But after playing for 90min I realized my mistake. There is nothing wrong with this, but I was probably expecting something like the Witcher 3. And Monster Hunter : World is clearly not that. But in contrast, screen shots and descriptions show exciting monsters, and bold dark monster action. But what you really get are cute animations ... Expand

Not exactly a review, just a does of reality in case you are blown away by the stellar reviews.

This is XBox One X review. Playing on large 4K monitor.

The game starts with a fairly nice character creator, a little awkward and fiddly with a controller. Lots of options, the game was looking promising. You even had the opportunity to change the 'background' so you can see what your character looks like in different light sources.

    Then the game starts. Eugh.

    1) I don't think it's fair to criticize the logic of games when they are trying to tell a story, but I just found this quite annoying: You are on a ship, bound for the New World. You've obviously been sailing for a long long time (unless the New World is just down the road). And you are 10 minutes from docking at the island... So of COURSE, this is the time that the passengers all get together and introduce themselves, instead of getting ready to disembark.

    2) The first character you meet is supposed to be an "A-list hunter", but is, alas, voiced by a dude-bro. The voice in no way gives you the impression that he is a big bad monster hunter. He sounds like he should be eating pizza, and hanging out with Michelangelo and Raphael in a sewer.

    3) Everything goes to hell as we hit an 'object' and this is when my brand new xbox starts throwing up solid walls of color instead of sea-spray and smoke.

    4) Finally I see my mute character in some cut scenes... And he vaguely resembles the character I just made. A low-res version, bordering on The Old Republic art style. Also, he's a mouth breather with a botox face. Nothing moves in his face.

    5) After an escape from the volcano monster, I realize that I'm actually supposed to be climbing a vertical cliff, and not scrabbling along the ground. My legs are just randomly swimming in the air as I 'climb'

    6) Eventually we land on the island, and the super impressive graphics are really seen for the first time... If that first time were 2005. The graphics are strangely bland and washed out, except for the cutscenes, and nothing impressive (i.e. nothing like those screenshots with the perfectly detailed monster hides).

    7) Your companion has an annoying high pitched perky voice that grated after the first 30 seconds... Can't wait for the rest of the game.

    8) We find the main camp and meet the cliches. They only voice the first words of each sentence, the rest is text. Some just grunt (i.e. no translation needed).

    9) The inventory section where you choose you weapons from the chest is hideous, and I really hope they didn't pay a designer for this.

    10) Ah, the combat tutorial! Clearly this was added at the last minute. A cave with a couple of barrels to hit, and then the whole screen is covered in "Right Right Right HOLD for stunning attack" etc etc. All the moves are just there on the screen the whole time as you jump around the screen, almost unable to see yourself with all the icons and text.

    11) Let's go hunt a monster! Oh, they are all running away. I've found their nest, and I'm doing the combos, and my character is just blindly flailing around hitting everything around him.

I just gave up after a few hours and traded the game in.

Imagine the Witcher 3, but with swords the size of VW Beetle, and voiced by the people that make cartoons for 1 year old children "YELLOW, can you say YELLOW? Say YELLOW with me!", and not actually fun to play, and with a UI and inventory that makes Mass Effect Andromeda's look sophisticated.

Charming, beautifully odd, if a little taxing, this hunter will devour your nights.

The most engaging game in the franchise. If you’ve been sitting on the Monster Hunter fence for awhile, this is the best chance to experiment and give it a try.

Monster Hunter: World captures that feel of hunting, and despite its technical quirks and poor design decisions, if you've got a group of friends to play with it comes highly recommended. If you're running solo, you might be better waiting for a sale.
