Metal Gear Survive is an intense survival experience that takes the exceptional gameplay of MGSV to set itself apart with a very entertaining game. However, this happens when it doesn't look like a MOD from the original and abusive micropayments don't interest you.

Overall, Metal Gear Survive is a great game. No, really. I don’t blame anyone for taking issues with the company that produced it, but it’s clear that the developers really put in the time and effort to make something worthwhile. There are some obvious issues with the story and one blatant microtransaction cash grab, but Survive has a ton of genuinely enjoyable content for its budget price. If you’re looking for a Metal Gear fan service game with a tacked on survival mechanic, this isn’t for you. If you’re looking for a survival game with a Metal Gear paint job, it’s well worth looking into.

A solid survival experience, mostly shining in the single-player due to a content-lacking co-op mode. We would have liked better storytelling and a less repetitive and tedious first part of the game.

A game that doesn't always balance the line between reward and challenge. [May 2018, p.78]

Accept the game for what it is – a grind to level up and improve your character and base – and there is fun to be had here. Come expecting a Metal Gear game though and you may be disappointed.

Metal Gear Survive is an enticing, challenging, polished and occasionally frustrating spinoff that doesn't devalue the reputation of the franchise, and offers a unique standalone experience that fans of survival games should enjoy getting stuck into.

It's a dumb game full of irritating characters, but its gameplay is more absorbing than I ever thought it could be.

If it had not been called Metal Gear Survive, this survival game would have been received in another way. However, many of the questionable decisions such as micropayments or permanent connection tarnish a remarkable gameplay based on The Phantom Pain.

If you can wipe away all the preconceptions surrounding Konami, Hideo Kojima, and the Metal Gear franchise, you’ll find a competent game in Metal Gear Survive. The story is mediocre and the game has obviously cut corners to make the budget despite being full of microtransactions. However, it’s also fun as both a survival game and a horde defense game at times.

Metal Gear Survive is a mediocre survival game, and that’s it. All the great things about the Metal Gear franchise are gone and all you can find here is hour after hour after hour of repetitive survival gameplay. This is how you kill a franchise.

A Metal Gear game in name only, Survive is a decent – though often frustrating - survival game with a few unique tricks up its sleeve. While the Metal Gear name brings with it a certain weight of expectation, as long as you don't go in expecting Metal Gear Solid 6, you'll be fine.

Strip away the need for it to be a Metal Gear game, and Survive is a surprisingly solid survival adventure game. There are moments of pure excitement in the game when you are defending a single point from oncoming enemies using cobbled together equipment and limited resources.

It has all the trappings of a game that should probably be free-to-play, but Konami is asking $40 for it up front. That's a bad deal.

The game flatout fails to capture the Metal Gear spirit, and while it has some positive qualities, they aren’t enough to redeem it.

Survive doesn’t possess the impeccable design and confidence that made the best Metal Gear games so special. Perhaps Survive is aware that it lacks this loftiness and isn’t trying to honor the legacy of this 30-year-old series, but that doesn’t excuse faults like its overly oppressive mechanics or bland story. If this truly is the future of Metal Gear, maybe it doesn’t need to survive.

To say that I’m a big fan of the Metal Gear Solid series would be a massive understatement and without a doubt I’ve had many hours of fun withTo say that I’m a big fan of the Metal Gear Solid series would be a massive understatement and without a doubt I’ve had many hours of fun with this series. When Metal Gear Survive was first announced I had mixed feelings, but ultimately I was willing to give it a try and in a way I’m glad I did. Don’t get me wrong Metal Gear Survive is far from perfect, but I think they’ve actually done a pretty decent job and I did enjoy it quite a bit. There are both single player and multiplayer offerings present in the game and they’ve done well on both, but I must admit that there is a lot more fun to be had playing it in multiplayer. There are a number of different mechanics in play at the same time and most of them hold up really well, and I was especially impressed with the survival mechanics. Without a doubt the survival mechanics have a realistic side to them and they will challenge you greatly carrying with it a very rewarding time when doing well. It can however be a little too difficult at times especially in the early stages and this will be off-putting for some. The game can also be bogged down in complicated elements and a little bit more in the way of simplicity would have kept the frustration levels down a bit more. There is a story present in the game and I’m glad to say that it is as wacky as ever. Wacky story’s are one of the things that Metal Gear Solid is famous for and I must admit that the story kept me invested throughout, which is great. My biggest problem with this game is that it lacked on the action side of things sometimes and I was crying out for a little bit more every now and then because it can be a little boring at times. The presentation side of the game is something that ticked a lot of boxes for me. I’ve always liked the look and sound of Metal Gear Solid games and it’s also present here so that in a way made me enjoy the game more. At the end of the day I can understand why quite a lot of people were very wary when it came to Metal Gear Survive because I was also very wary because I didn’t want them to place the series in a downward spiral. Thankfully it hasn’t harmed the series in any way in my opinion and whilst Metal Gear Survive may not be perfect it provided me with quite a few enjoyable moments and in a way it surprised me quite a bit, and for that reason it does enough to get a recommendation from me. If I sold a pack of eggs and I wrote on this pack "milk", could I be considered fraudulent?
