When Metal Gear Survive was first announced I had mixed feelings, but ultimately I was willing to give it a try and in a way I’m glad I did. Don’t get me wrong Metal Gear Survive is far from perfect, but I think they’ve actually done a pretty decent job and I did enjoy it quite a bit. There are both single player and multiplayer offerings present in the game and they’ve done well on both, but I must admit that there is a lot more fun to be had playing it in multiplayer. There are a number of different mechanics in play at the same time and most of them hold up really well, and I was especially impressed with the survival mechanics. Without a doubt the survival mechanics have a realistic side to them and they will challenge you greatly carrying with it a very rewarding time when doing well. It can however be a little too difficult at times especially in the early stages and this will be off-putting for some. The game can also be bogged down in complicated elements and a little bit more in the way of simplicity would have kept the frustration levels down a bit more. There is a story present in the game and I’m glad to say that it is as wacky as ever. Wacky story’s are one of the things that Metal Gear Solid is famous for and I must admit that the story kept me invested throughout, which is great. My biggest problem with this game is that it lacked on the action side of things sometimes and I was crying out for a little bit more every now and then because it can be a little boring at times. The presentation side of the game is something that ticked a lot of boxes for me. I’ve always liked the look and sound of Metal Gear Solid games and it’s also present here so that in a way made me enjoy the game more. At the end of the day I can understand why quite a lot of people were very wary when it came to Metal Gear Survive because I was also very wary because I didn’t want them to place the series in a downward spiral. Thankfully it hasn’t harmed the series in any way in my opinion and whilst Metal Gear Survive may not be perfect it provided me with quite a few enjoyable moments and in a way it surprised me quite a bit, and for that reason it does enough to get a recommendation from me. A complete bastardization of one of gaming's most historic and beloved IPs. Metal Gear Survive shows you where Konami are at with Hideo Kojima no longer with them. The game is nothing more than an insipid, grindy, zombie survival game, also known as the "White Noise" of video game creativity.

After they ask for money for the game, which is for the most part, done not well. They still ask for money for a slot of game saving. For additional party in game and etc. They specifically do so that there is more routine. And the usual things, without donate, took a long time. Even in a single.

They even stretched out the cutscenes. It looks like this: the main character is attacked by a monster. The hero stands and watches as the monster approaches, how he waves, how he attacks. Seconds are 10-15. I remind you, the main character is standing still. And so 10 times for the one cutscene.

If you're feeling down on life I highly recommend inflicting further pain on yourself by playing Metal Gear Survive. It'll help put your life problems into perspective and you'll want to get back to reality as fast as you can. I just watched Jim Sterling's youtube video about this game. "It is sh*t". Yep, I should have just copy and pasted those 3 words into this review.

Cluttered with bug's, frustrating UI, and filled to the brim with assets "borrowed" from MGSV, Konami acts far to proud in presenting what is not only a sh*t game to begin with but an absolute piss poor excuse to profit of a series that should have died with dignity. This game is god awful. This isn't Metal Gear any more than Fortnight's original game mode is. It's just a bunch of reused assets from MGSV in a tower defence mode. What's worse is the fact that they somehow managed to make the Fox Engine feel clunky, not to mention the horrid UI. Do yourself a favor and save your money. This one's not even worth a sale, and the coop doesn't save it.

Now after a few hours I am really enjoying this game. The gameplay and progression has a welcoming pace. I bought it thinking it’s a “game-as-service” type game where you log in and do a match or two online but was surprised by the campaign content. It’s nothing extravagant and is like a B horror film in some ways which is good because it knows it’s a spin off and doesn’t damage the Metal Gear brand. I like how you can mold this character that comes to life in the cinematics and story. Your ‘avatar’ grows as you play, learning skills and being able to play different classes. In campaign, the survival part is realistic where you have to hunt for food and gather water, otherwise you can start losing health and stamina and eventually die. It has a Breath or the Wild feel in those mechanics. You gather parts all over and build up your base as you see fit to defend yourself from different types of infected mutants. There are daily, weekly and monthly challenges that net you different resources for unlocking content so you can log in daily for a short time and still progress. I’m playing on the Xbox One X and the HDR and enhancements look great on the screen, I hope MGS5 Phantom Pain gets similar enhancements in a patch. If you see it for what it is, I think you will enjoy what the developers have created here. This is not meant to be an important entry in the Metal Gear series, but instead a way to have fun with the world and mechanics in a different way and in that it succeeds. It’s also priced fairly for what it is. The only gripe I have so far is if you want to create a new avatar, you have to either delete your first one, log in as a different account, or buy a character slot for coins which I think (not sure) are only available via real money. I will update the review after I spend more time with it and get to play the online. Expand

Wow! Despite the controversy, I had very high expectations for this game. I'm a HUGE fan of Metal Gear V and the team who worked on Survive is made up of mostly the same people (minus Kojima of course). My expectations have been surpassed. There have been so many tense moments that have kept me immersed and entertained. Some might be frustrated by the constant need for food and water. It is far more forgiving than say "Don't Starve" or "The Long Dark", but scavenging and hunting for food and water are a key part of the gameplay so if that is not your thing, you might want to stear clear of Survive. Another source of tension is the "dust" which covers most of the games open world. You have limited oxygen which adds yet another challenge. Not to mention the possiblity of getting lost in the dust, or overrun by Wanderers. The games systems are plentiful and intricate and produce a great experience.

The story is actually pretty darn good. In edition to a few good cutscense, "codec style" conversations as well as audio logs you find that can be listened to as you play (simular to MGSV). It's simple and leaves you alone for long periods of time in favor of focusing on gameplay, but the plot is well thought out. It has many referances to the Divine Comedy which is fun as well as some real-world conspiricies like the Philadelphia Experiment. My main complaint is the A.I. Virgel being deadpan and slow-talking.

The co-op tower-defense mode is a complete change of pace. It is an absolute blast with friends! I'm uncertain of the replayability of it, but my friends and I played upwards of 14 hours in the beta on just 2 maps! The full game has quite a bit more so I'm willing to bet theres quite a bit of fun to still be had.

Now the downside...The menus and controls. They aren't "terrible", but they take a LOT of getting used to. Particularly if you're on keyboard/mouse like myself. Do yourself a favor and use a controller. I've already adjusted and the percision of the mouse has its advantages, but Survive was obviously designed with controllers in mind.

Overall, great game and amazing value at 40 bucks on release!

Once you get to a point in the game, food and drink are no longer an issue since you can have your own farms and water purifiers. I find myself having to eat so much food now before it spoils. The game is somewhat difficult overall but nothing too strenuous. There's one, maybe two missions that I had to redo two or three times but other than that it is pretty straightforward.

Technically, the game is not very good : one example is that, while in MGS V the Fox engine is used for all the conversations, in Survive, there are textual conversations, the animation is not as good as in MGS V. The mist is a bad way to make the visible distance low. The IA is bad (but I think it is done for unbalancing the numbers of zombis). The scenario is only a game context.
    The missions are not good...
    But...
The missions are not really bad also.
The mist make me stressing, so, I like to visit it to find all elements I need. I like to see my base camp evolving.
Also, the way we play is as good as in MGS V. It is like we have average quality MGS V additional missions.
For now, I can say I like to play to this game, even if lot of things are perfectibles.
As I can say it is not a good game, I can also say it is not a game I hate.

At the end, I can say it is not a bad game but a bad Metal Gear game. As I said at the start, I had to consider it is not a part of the Metal Gear licence to appreciate Survive ! This is the only way to see it is not a so bad game. A Metal Gear game is a game with a great scenario. In Survive, this is a poor one. A Metal Gear game is a technological demo. Survive is not in this case. No, Survive is not Metal Gear.
Survive is a "financial" game, i.e. a game done for making greater income on the MGS V budget. Even for this, I am not sure it will be a success for Konami.
On this context, even if Hideo has exploded the budget, they must have to find a way to give/sell/loan to Kojima Productions the licence. I think this can be a better solution than selling "bad" Metal Gear labelled game.

You'll constantly be logging into menu screens to juggle all sorts of activities. Sadly, microtransactions also figure into the game. They basically took all the phantom pain content and reworked it into a day-z style survival game with elements of base defence. The game starts off badly with too much enjoyment taken away by the fact that you're constantly having to eat and drink all the time. Stamina also decreases ridiculously quickly. However after a few missions you get into the hang of the whole gathering cycle and it becomes a bit more fun. The story is pretty meh, which lets everything down. The characters are basically a bunch of NPCs that look after your base whilst you're out on missions. The enemies are pretty dumb, though half way through the game they suddenly throw a lot more difficult enemies at you. Overall it's an ok game if you like crafting and metal hear, but overall I just which they'd taken all the stuff was unfinished from phantom pain and completed it. I read there was another chapter and entire maps that got left out. They would have been better off finishing those. Expand

If you can wipe away all the preconceptions surrounding Konami, Hideo Kojima, and the Metal Gear franchise, you’ll find a competent game in Metal Gear Survive. The story is mediocre and the game has obviously cut corners to make the budget despite being full of microtransactions. However, it’s also fun as both a survival game and a horde defense game at times.
