To say that I’m a big fan of the Metal Gear Solid series would be a massive understatement and without a doubt I’ve had many hours of fun with this series. When Metal Gear Survive was first announced I had mixed feelings, but ultimately I was willing to give it a try and in a way I’m glad I did. Don’t get me wrong Metal Gear Survive is far from perfect, but I think they’ve actually done a pretty decent job and I did enjoy it quite a bit. There are both single player and multiplayer offerings present in the game and they’ve done well on both, but I must admit that there is a lot more fun to be had playing it in multiplayer. There are a number of different mechanics in play at the same time and most of them hold up really well, and I was especially impressed with the survival mechanics. Without a doubt the survival mechanics have a realistic side to them and they will challenge you greatly carrying with it a very rewarding time when doing well. It can however be a little too difficult at times especially in the early stages and this will be off-putting for some. The game can also be bogged down in complicated elements and a little bit more in the way of simplicity would have kept the frustration levels down a bit more. There is a story present in the game and I’m glad to say that it is as wacky as ever. Wacky story’s are one of the things that Metal Gear Solid is famous for and I must admit that the story kept me invested throughout, which is great. My biggest problem with this game is that it lacked on the action side of things sometimes and I was crying out for a little bit more every now and then because it can be a little boring at times. The presentation side of the game is something that ticked a lot of boxes for me. I’ve always liked the look and sound of Metal Gear Solid games and it’s also present here so that in a way made me enjoy the game more. At the end of the day I can understand why quite a lot of people were very wary when it came to Metal Gear Survive because I was also very wary because I didn’t want them to place the series in a downward spiral. Thankfully it hasn’t harmed the series in any way in my opinion and whilst Metal Gear Survive may not be perfect it provided me with quite a few enjoyable moments and in a way it surprised me quite a bit, and for that reason it does enough to get a recommendation from me. The idea of a survival zombie game in a delapitated alternate world mixed with Metal Gear Solid artstyle and gameplay was not appealing to me from the reveal trailer but after I saw a video of gameplay I was intrigued. Now after a few hours I am really enjoying this game. The gameplay and progression has a welcoming pace. I bought it thinking it’s a “game-as-service” type game where you log in and do a match or two online but was surprised by the campaign content. It’s nothing extravagant and is like a B horror film in some ways which is good because it knows it’s a spin off and doesn’t damage the Metal Gear brand. I like how you can mold this character that comes to life in the cinematics and story. Your ‘avatar’ grows as you play, learning skills and being able to play different classes. In campaign, the survival part is realistic where you have to hunt for food and gather water, otherwise you can start losing health and stamina and eventually die. It has a Breath or the Wild feel in those mechanics. You gather parts all over and build up your base as you see fit to defend yourself from different types of infected mutants. There are daily, weekly and monthly challenges that net you different resources for unlocking content so you can log in daily for a short time and still progress. I’m playing on the Xbox One X and the HDR and enhancements look great on the screen, I hope MGS5 Phantom Pain gets similar enhancements in a patch. If you see it for what it is, I think you will enjoy what the developers have created here. This is not meant to be an important entry in the Metal Gear series, but instead a way to have fun with the world and mechanics in a different way and in that it succeeds. It’s also priced fairly for what it is. The only gripe I have so far is if you want to create a new avatar, you have to either delete your first one, log in as a different account, or buy a character slot for coins which I think (not sure) are only available via real money. I will update the review after I spend more time with it and get to play the online. Expand

Pretty good game, unnecessary complex on some systems, like Healing (Remember Solid 3 healing system by the way), but when mastered, turn into a incredible fun game.

Survive is Death Stranding, only blinds won't see it. Hating Survive = Hating Death Stranding

The game is great: packed with content, fun and challenging. Forget about biased reviews and fanboys. A battle royale mode would be amazing. Stop the hate and try to be objective.

Wow! Despite the controversy, I had very high expectations for this game. I'm a HUGE fan of Metal Gear V and the team who worked on Survive is made up of mostly the same people (minus Kojima of course). My expectations have been surpassed. There have been so many tense moments that have kept me immersed and entertained. Some might be frustrated by the constant need for food and water. It is far more forgiving than say "Don't Starve" or "The Long Dark", but scavenging and hunting for food and water are a key part of the gameplay so if that is not your thing, you might want to stear clear of Survive. Another source of tension is the "dust" which covers most of the games open world. You have limited oxygen which adds yet another challenge. Not to mention the possiblity of getting lost in the dust, or overrun by Wanderers. The games systems are plentiful and intricate and produce a great experience.

The story is actually pretty darn good. In edition to a few good cutscense, "codec style" conversations as well as audio logs you find that can be listened to as you play (simular to MGSV). It's simple and leaves you alone for long periods of time in favor of focusing on gameplay, but the plot is well thought out. It has many referances to the Divine Comedy which is fun as well as some real-world conspiricies like the Philadelphia Experiment. My main complaint is the A.I. Virgel being deadpan and slow-talking.

The co-op tower-defense mode is a complete change of pace. It is an absolute blast with friends! I'm uncertain of the replayability of it, but my friends and I played upwards of 14 hours in the beta on just 2 maps! The full game has quite a bit more so I'm willing to bet theres quite a bit of fun to still be had.

Now the downside...The menus and controls. They aren't "terrible", but they take a LOT of getting used to. Particularly if you're on keyboard/mouse like myself. Do yourself a favor and use a controller. I've already adjusted and the percision of the mouse has its advantages, but Survive was obviously designed with controllers in mind.

Overall, great game and amazing value at 40 bucks on release!

I'm honestly baffled as to why there are so many bad reviews. I've played the Metal Gear franchise since Metal Gear Solid and I loved every minute of Survive. Is it the best game ever? No. But this game is very enjoyable; it has solid gameplay and the mechanics are pretty cool too.

Once you get to a point in the game, food and drink are no longer an issue since you can have your own farms and water purifiers. I find myself having to eat so much food now before it spoils. The game is somewhat difficult overall but nothing too strenuous. There's one, maybe two missions that I had to redo two or three times but other than that it is pretty straightforward.

If you're a fan of crafting/survival games, you should definitely check it out.

A game that doesn't always balance the line between reward and challenge. [May 2018, p.78]

Accept the game for what it is – a grind to level up and improve your character and base – and there is fun to be had here. Come expecting a Metal Gear game though and you may be disappointed.

If you can wipe away all the preconceptions surrounding Konami, Hideo Kojima, and the Metal Gear franchise, you’ll find a competent game in Metal Gear Survive. The story is mediocre and the game has obviously cut corners to make the budget despite being full of microtransactions. However, it’s also fun as both a survival game and a horde defense game at times.
