So it’s ironic that, given the opportunity to do whatever they wanted with this last generation cult classic revived, developer Kaiko and publisher THQ Nordic did so little to improve the experience for the remaster. Honestly, it’s a struggle to even note much of an update to the graphics. Character models are a little bit smoother. Parts of the varied fantasy world look a little bit brighter, but overall it doesn’t appear that textures have seen much of an improvement. No one watching this game in motion is going to mistake it for a new release. What has been updated in this remaster? Well, one welcome change is the removal of level locking. You’re now free to explore the world with enemies scaling to your level, so you’ll no longer wander into the wrong part of the map only to be promptly killed in one or two hits because you’re under leveled. Kaiko has also added a Very Hard difficulty for those looking for an extra challenge. The two massive add-ons, The Legend of Dead Kel and Teeth of Naros, are also included. That’s really about it for the improvements however. In terms of new features, Re-Reckoning is one of the more disappointing re-releases in recent years. The Xbox version isn’t very well optimized, either. The frame rate would regularly dip in the game’s many large, outdoor areas, and I ran into crashes every few hours. At least you can save anywhere. Curiously, the one addition that could have made this remaster more worthwhile, a new five-hour add-on called Fatesworn, won’t be released until next year and you'll get all of it for much less than picking this up today in its current state. Most people are probably more familiar with the controversy surrounding Amalur’s development than the game itself if not look it up it's worth. read. Despite its rocky history and the questionable improvements, there is still an enjoyable action RPG here, even if nearly a decade later, Kingdoms of Amalur is definitely showing its age. Combat is still Amalur’s strong suit in the end. It has a sufficient heaviness to it that a lot of RPGs lack, though it never quite feels as good as some of todays massive studio offerings. That said, there are plenty of ways to customize your character to suit your combat style and needs. There are three basic classes: Might, Finesse, and Sorcery, but you’re free to mix and match classes and skill trees as you please. With a little planning, it’s completely viable to have a character that wields a giant warhammer with one button and magic staff with another. Regardless of what you end up equipping, each fight is about increasing your Fate meter and ultimately unleashing a powerful, gory Reckoning attack, which can eliminate an entire group of enemies and give you a huge boots in experience points if you pull it off just right. But the camera, which was heavily criticized in the original release, is still troublesome during combat, often picking odd angles behind scenery, zooming out randomly, and regularly getting stuck underground. Quests are another issue. Sure, there are lots of them, but they rarely involve more than killing a group of monsters, collecting a few specific trinkets, or going from point A to point B. Even the main quest doesn’t offer much variety outside of its boss fights. Amalur’s story about the nature of fate is serviceable and the voice acting does hold up pretty well, but it’s largely an excuse to set up more combat encounters. And while the levels are large and varied, they’re ultimately just big zones with branching paths and don’t make up a truly open world. It’s a little difficult going back to a game like this after playing so many of the years gone by greats to hit the Xbox console. Perhaps the most frustrating thing about Re-Reckoning is the lack updates to the UI, which feels especially cumbersome by todays standards. In the end of all the dated complaints a solid game experience is still to be had here for your Xbox One. Especially if you missed the opportunity to play it until now on your Xbox console. Expand

Not much to say here.Should have been called Kingdoms Of Amalur the re-releasing. If you own the original don't bother getting this. The original game is great, so this review applies only to this cash grab version.

This re release was made for consoles the PC game all ways looked good because games scale with PC hardware, so you wont see much difference. On PS3 and 360 this game was 720p at 30FPS, you can now play it at true 4K 60 fps on the 1X and 1440p 60FPS on PS4 pro and 1080P 60 FPS on base consoles, this is a massive upgrade, IF you cant understand those number than you wont understand just how amazing they are.
Yes the art and assets are the same, thankfully because the character models in the original game are more attractive than the character models in modern games made today, thanks to political pandering. Yes the animation looks dated but this isnt a full priced release and re animating 1000s of characters would have made the project way to costly to risk.
Its meant as a performance upgrade so modern console gamers can experience this amazing game. After the cry baby reception that the game has received for not completely over hauling everything, and them not spending 500 m on this risky project dont expect many more of histories hidden gems to be brought to the new platforms. Its just to much of a risk with today's entitled modern You Tuber community and their hungry for out rage audience.

If you enjoyed the original then you know what to expect otherwise this is a very lazy port. Options still have the 360 controller layout so you can tell no love went into this. Also, none of the achievements work, unlike the PS4 version. Recommend waiting for a sale THQ Nordic should put in a little more effort but we know they won't.

One of the better remasters of an already very good game. The original was great (played on PC and 360) and this doesn't change much other than a few tweaks. So everything about the original still applies here. Didn't really notice any graphical upgrades but the game was cartoony anyway so it wouldn't matter.

The game has the same bugs as before though. When you pause the game it seems to apply a dark filter on the graphics. If you keep doing that enough then it becomes permanent such that the whole game is too dark (but not the menus). It did this in the original as well. That problem still exists but restarting solves it. There are also more graphical issues than I remember. Watching certain characters run through a cavern and they will fly through some chambers. During combat I had enemies get knocked through scenery into inaccessible areas like rocks or mountains. In some cases it was easier to just move on but in a couple of quests where you have to kill them then it became annoying. I had only 1 CTD the entire time which is better than many modern games I'm playing.

I'm hoping the success of this remaster is enough to encourage a new game in the series that sticks with the things that made this one good. Not sure how I feel about the next DLC coming out as I've already maxed out everything so there is little to add but we'll see.

I played on Hard difficulty, something I never do, to get an achievement and I have to say it was easier than a lot of games. Dodging is the key to combat and only a few enemies required a little work. The bosses were rather easy even on Hard. After I got the achievement I switched to Easy so I could run through the rest of the game and it was a cake walk. So this isn't a game for those who like difficulty, it is just a fun, easy game to get lost in.

The only reason I didn't give it a 10 is because the Day 1 patch came out on Day 2 so I lost 3 1/2 hours of game play playing on Day 1 ( I deleted my saves because they are not compatible with new patch). Re-Reckoning, ideally, should be seen as an opportunity for people who have never enjoyed this masterpiece of a game to do so with modern graphical updates and minor adjustments. However, it should be understood that unlike its predecessor, Re-Reckoning is a much less mechanically stable game, which makes it hard to recommend over the original game.

Even after the associated Xbox One patch, players will encounter a multitude of strange, yet mostly non-intrusive graphical hiccups (such as certain treasure chests not having lids), as well as moderately longer load times than the original game. However, several unfortunate individuals will also experience crashes to the main menu, while others still will encounter the now-infamous "disappearing enemies" glitch, which causes the associated save file to become corrupted. While potential workarounds have been suggested, a bug this game-breaking and egregious should not exist in any video game of Amalur's ilk.

Other unfortunate errors exist in the game that make this "remaster" hard to recommend - while the graphics have been improved and the framerate increased to 60 FPS, the graphical updates do not necessarily bring Reckoning into 2020 successfully. Furthermore, framerate drops occur often, and sometimes persist until the game is reloaded. The latter problem is a carry-over from the original, and players will find that there are many problems found in the first game that have been brought into Re-Reckoning. And the idea that there are new bugs to deal with, in addition to there being many (if not all) bugs that made their way into Re-Reckoning, makes this version of Kingdoms of Amalur less than an obvious recommendation over the original. And frankly, the idea of a remaster being inferior to its respective original game is preposterous.

While definitions of what constitutes a port, remaster and remake are inherently subjective, I am apt to calling this game a port that features some minor mathematical adjustments and graphical updates. And while the price point of $40 US does not make Re-Reckoning a write-off, it makes choosing between the original and its lacking successor a challenge. While further patches and updates may be applied in time to bring Re-Reckoning up to snuff, it is hard to recommend this version of Kingdoms of Amalur to anyone who values performance and graphics equally. The original was a magnificent experience, but this supposed remaster, regrettably, does not do it justice.

Poor remaster of a decent game, that wasn't needed.

Serves no purpose being here, other than being yet again a product of the industry this day and age, where unnecessary remasters are produced for easy profits for the least needed creativity and resources. They do it, because a portion of people allow them to do it.

That it was rushed for easy, fast money shows, because, while some bugs of the old version were fixed, in this one, new ones have arisen. That's how "remaster" practices of games that don't need them often go these days. Rush them out as fast as possible, make the money. New problems? We'll see if we can patch em out later, IF we feel like it.

Only buy it at the most now, if a hardcore fan that wants to play through the same thing again, with minor improvements, fixes, and some new problems.
The changes aren't big enough to warrant a full price buy for newcomers. Certainly not with the new problems. Best wait for a sale at the very least, and the specifics of what this oncoming dlc will be. Because right now, only the title and "somewhere in 2021" of this dlc has been announced, they're hoping enough to get more people to throw money at them. AND naturally this day and age, a good enough "reason" to create an even more expensive edition. Because the standard full priced version of an old game isn't enough to give people this dlc, no, no, give more money and you'll get it with this 2nd edition. Just sad to see how easily publishers can play with a lot of people. Very sad.

I had read comments saying there was a lot of issues with it at launch so delayed my review a bit before playing it. I jumped into it about 2 weeks after release. I kind of worried about that knowing this game can take up to 100 hours to complete., but I was having some back issues so had plenty of down time so decided to go at it non-stop. I had no issues with it getting the late start so they must have ironed them out quickly. I only played about 50 to 60 hours, because i wanted to get this in quick. I had played the original and DLCs so i figured that be enough time to give a honest impression. I can honestly say I enjoyed it as much as the original, and i can really see why or why not you’d make this upgrade. It looks a little better, nothing drastic I don’t think. They cleaned up the first one they didn’t completely redo like some remasters. They left everything you loved about the original, keeping the original source as close to the one you know and love. So if your a huge fan and wanted a upgrade I can see spending the 39.99 easy. Like I said 100 hours so you are gonna be getting your value back no question. The way this game is set up you can play it over and over as well. There is just so much content, and gameplay variations that make this game one of those you can buy if you don’t buy a lot of games or only get for gifts, and play it all year. If you are new to it it can seem a little dated especially if you have been playing Witcher or something like that. To explain it really has a first fable type vibe to it. So if you enjoy RPGs of that period of time I can see you loving this.

Your character customization from the start really just shows how in depth this game is going to be. There are so many options of appearance but also skills. You can literally play this in so many different ways, and it never feel the same. Like you can upgrade different character types, and have different moves and magics. Same goes with the weapons for these classes. You can have a ton of different weapons from light and heavy swords to Staffs, bows, daggers, and so much more. You can even mix these type of classes up and try different ones. You get a primary and secondary weapon spot so can try two different ones at once. You decide you don’t like your choices you can change the styles and weapons at any time. So your choices in this game seem limitless. The same goes for story choices, there are so many different ways to go along your journey. Join certain factions, help different people, just do the main missions it’s up to you. The options and game’s map is enormous. You will be entertained for hours and hours. I probably spent hours just managing my inventory, deciding what to use and sell. If I didn’t get games like I do and wanted something that made me feel like I got my money’s worth I’d with out a doubt would grab this.

Let’s talk about how it looks and sounds for a bit. I think it’s a improvement over the original’s look, but I don’t think it’s a huge improvement. It’s not a difference that is mind blowing, but it’s enough to feel like you are playing it on a new console. If you enjoyed how the original looks I think it really keeps that original detail and design. I love all the different monster and enemy types, they all vary so much. It will make you approach with caution to learn their different attacks, or element damage they can do to you. Like some can give you diseases or curses, or have fire or electricity. You have to pay attention, and sometimes use different weapons or armors in areas. There are different skill levels though if you struggle, you can play it on easier levels. So it is for all skill of players in my opinion. I loved the sounds and music as well very melancholy and fitting of the time period. Like I said it really has that original Fable feel and setting. If you loved it or Oblivion I can see you really enjoying this as well.

I can’t wait to finish up this review and go play it some more. I’ll have to reinstall it though, because I had to delete it to actually make myself go and do this review. I just couldn’t stop playing it. It is one of those worlds you just get lost in. Such amazing enemies, NPCs, and stories that just keep you glued to the television. The world is just so easy to travel, and fun to explore. Loaded with so many secrets and loot to find. I found myself just wanting to check around every corner for a chest to lock pick, or cave to explore. It’s really an addictive experience., and I’m so glad I got to step back into this lovely game. Playing it over refreshed me on so many classic moments, and new ones since I didn’t have the DLCs on the original. I heard they may even do some new DLC, I can only hope. So if you love RPGs like I do. I highly recommend you checking this one out. Especially if you never experienced it last Gen.

But in my 5 or 6 hours playing this "remaster" I've experienced more serious bugs than I did in the dozens of hours I spent in the original. So far I've been regularly caught in unending load screens, twice lost the ability to save or load until restarting my console, and even had my character model completely disappear and had to reload a previous save to fix the issue. I'm pretty sure I've spent more time replaying areas I'd already done than I did just playing straight through.

Some of the visuals and framerate are improved. Certain environments are a night and day difference, while others I can tell the difference only if I really look, though again since I can't just play the damn thing I've only gotten so far. Faces are still ugly and character models are boxy, though less than before, to be fair. Unfortunately, regular stuttering is still there, animations are unchanged, and with the bugs? I think I'd rather just play the original.

I wanted to enjoy it even more than the first, but at $40 when most of the work is already done, it's a lazy remaster. I bought a hard copy, so I may just resell it soon and get most of my money back. May delete all my saves and reinstall to try again, but there's no reason why they should have bothered releasing this if they were going to put so little love into it.

Edited!: I've been able to play more and found far fewer bugs. Mostly visual in nature now. Not sure why there was such a rocky start, and I hope it doesn't happen again later.

Visuals are very much improved now that I've gotten into more areas. I suspect as I was stuck in largely underground areas a lot of my previous time with it I wasn't seeing it's best. Stuttering still happens but still not as bad as the original. Other complaints haven't changed, and I'm bracing myself for massive bugs again in the future. That said, I'll bump it up to a 4/10 for a remaster, and give it another point or two if things improve as I go. Otherwise, still lazy/broken.

With that said, it's still a middle of the pack RPG. It's nothing special.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is the story of marketable talent crafting a competent—if flawed—RPG in 2012; Re-Reckoning is that same story hastily repackaged in 2020 and resold at an overinflated price point.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning is a necessary remastering of one of the best RPGs of the last 15 years.

Kingdoms of Amalur Re-Reckoning brings you back to a magical world. The game has been polished to bring it to 2020. This succeeded for the better part of it. The game looks good overall but here and there the aging is still visible pretty clearly. For 40 euros you still get a hell of a RPG with more than 40 hours of story, all of the DLC and next to that a lot of side missions, tons of weapons and more. Also, there is a new DLC on it's way for the game slated in 2021. That makes this more than worth the buy.
