This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

The campaign was crap though, a lot like halo 4 and felt short and did not have much of a overall plot. Expand

Minus one for solo campaign. Co-op is great. The multiplayer is the greatest Halo multiplayer yet. And I have been playing Halo games non-stop since Halo: CE on the original Xbox, been to conventions, collectible, novels, etc. The MP is so, so good. Did I mention how good Arena is?

Sad to see co-op split screen go. I thoroughly enjoyed playing Halo 1,2,3 legendary co-op with a friend. Campaign feels lackluster, story is weakening. Multiplayer seems sound and plays relatively smooth. Obviously this is what 343 focused on this version.

Yes I should have read the back of the game carefully first but who would've thought. I have read a lot of the complaints and I have to say most of them are right on the nose. Even though I could not play I watched my son because I was interested in the story line. I am so disappointed. I think the thing that upsets me the most though, and many people may not agree with this but, the fact that you cannot sit with a friend or three and play alongside each other crammed onto the couch, laughing, giggling and yelling in a frenzy of excitement and fun or the boys begging "mom" to play because I am a kick ass sniper. As a parent I try to limit the amount of electronic time my son has and when the boys come over they are allowed to play for a bit and then sent outside for some time with nature. But now in order for him to play his most favorite game and one of mine with his friends they have to own and xbox one and halo 5 and be in their own homes. None of them have an Xbox one, they all own PS4. Truthfully I bought the xbox one just for Halo 5. I feel like I have made a huge mistake. I am not sure who makes the decisions when you design these games but I do not agree that completely eliminating split screen play to get a better picture or whatever it was I read was the reason was worth it. Halo 4 was perfectly fine playing split screen. When you have a game series the next game is suppose to be amazing compared to the last. Unfortunately Halo 4 is better in leaps and bounds compared to Halo 5. Get it together Microsoft or I may just have to trade it all in. I hate to say that because I have been an avid supporter of Microsoft but when it comes down to it, as a parent we buy what makes our kids, and ourselves happy. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First, SPOILERS BELOW!!!

I'm sorry: every Halo until this one has been great - I was most nervous about Halo 4, as it was 343's first entry into the series...and they delivered! Well, mostly: the Prometheans were an interesting conceit, the Didact was...imposing although I would have liked more character development or menace, and the Campaign levels were solid. As a sidenote: I only play the Campaign, rarely mutliplayer (I don't have the time (or patience) to spend honing my MP skills...SP has been just GREAT until now.

    Then this mess.

    My issues:
-you're BARELY the Chief in the game: Bungie did the "Arbiter switch out" for Halo 2, but it felt balanced, and it contextually made sense with the story and the 3rd party (Flood) as a threat - Locke seems like a good character, but the "head-to-head" matchup promised by the marketing didn't come to fruition except for a painful-to-watch hand-to-hand CG fight
-The story - just...bad, man. There's some tacked-on "hunt" that made no sense: Chief is ignoring UNSC orders and going after Cortana with just his squad...even though he discovers she's an enemy now and could, you know, contact them...why not go back to Infinity and explain what he saw? He's pretty much a lawbringer after saving the galaxy...? No...this story is confusing as hell, the motivations of the characters are unclear, and it does nothing to build on the Haloverse
-The continuity - I had expected something related to the end of Halo 4; the only thread to it is the Prometheans are still enemies and are...helping the AIs to, uh, take over and police the galaxy in order to...er...stop war...? Or, er, defend against the Flood returning...? Or...?
-The marketing - in their first trailer, Chief is covered in some robe walking across the desert, a Guardian rises up and...none of that is in the game or predating the game or, well, anything...I was expecting something to have happened to Earth (remember the end of Halo 4 when the Didact dropped...something on the ground and the soldiers were warily approaching it...? Wha' hoppen?)
-the squad AI...the goddamned squad AI - I'd played the first level and though, "hunh...Republic Commando...?" then read online that the Producer produced RC back in the day and I was looking forward to it: RC was fun and I had hoped for a sequel...your squad had snappy banter, and each had a unique function. Most importantly, they LISTENED TO YOUR COMMANDS. These AI are f***ing RETARDED. They don't stay put, they run into a hail of plasma for no reason, they don't have any variety of capability, and they don't have much command variety. If there's a "worst thing" about this game, it's your squad AI...
-guns felt uniform - action didn't seem varied
-Boss battles were repetitive, ESPECIALLY the 3x Eternal Warden one on The Breaking - he wasn't menacing and seemed to have no purpose in the story except to sound English and have a stupid "Mario 64" bubble exposed on his back as a weak point
-levels were boring - it felt like being channeled from one multiplayer arena to the next - little variation between levels, very few surprises

The only plusses I saw were:
-Cortana as the villain - I was Ok with this: it was a nice plot twist to have her turn on humanity: shades of Dr. Halsey's arrogance mixed with an AI's immortality
-the AI threat revealed at the end - it's going to be interesting to see how this plays out in Halo 6: AIs in the Haloverse control slipspace jumps, complex installations, planetary defenses, almost everything...if they jump ship to become a totalitarian regime, how does the UNSC fight that while crippled by their betrayal?

If they can make a story out of that that makes sense, Halo 6 might be good...after 5, though, for the first time EVER, I'm going to wait for it to drop in price.

Ugh. So disappointed. This is one of my favorite series and this is just a big ole turd in what was supposed to be a promising new era...

Despite lobbying fanboys trying to resurrect a game that failed on too many levels, the overall experience of Halo wasn't there in Halo 5.

I'll try and be as thorough as I can when reviewing it, and will list 10 points that correlate with the 0 to 10 scoring systems on Metacritic. So here goes! 1 - No split screen. Sure, that doesn't really affect me too much anymore, but think

Sure, that doesn't really affect me too much anymore, but think back to when you were a kid. Going over to a friend's house or having them come over to yours and sitting back and playing some Halo together. Hell, some friends can't afford an Xbox so all the better they get to experience ALONGSIDE of you, which is no longer possible.

Well, guess you can always pack up your TV, Xbox One, controllers, and all necessary cables, head over to a friends, hook it up and play. Yay. -1

2 - The game is beautiful.

Mine you, it's not ground breaking or anything, but it's a definite improvement visually over it's predecessors. Despite graphics not making a game, there's definitely something to be said when reviewing it. +1

    3 - Microtransactions.

While it's not a huge thing in Halo 5, and things purchased with money can be obtained simply by playing as well, there's something to be said for providing an "easy route" for those who have money to burn vs those that don't. Gold Req packs do provide an advantage to players, and being able to purchase them with real money is doing what everyone hates... providing an advantage for cash players. -1

    4 - No map voting.

It doesn't matter whether you like playing Blood Gulch for the 5th time in a row or not, it's never a good idea to remove features. This goes hand-in-hand with the removal of splitscreen. Allowing playing to vote for maps was a way of ensuring that players aren't being stuck in less-than-desirable maps/gamemodes. With the added "You're banned for... (insert ludicrous reason for actually banning someone here)" players are locked into playing maps they do not enjoy, even thought nearly the entire lobby would rather be playing something else. -1

    5 - The Ban Hammer.

Have you ever been playing a game and decided "Well, I'm losing and there is no coming back from this. I'm no longer having fun. I'm going to play a different game mode"? Well, now you can do that and receive an automatic ban lasting for increasing increments of time depending on the frequency of quits. Sure, it's affects everyone when a teammate quits, but locking players into the "play or die" mentality is absolutely moronic. -1

    6 - Vehicles are useless.

This may just be a case of bad map rotation or a severe lack of large maps in the early game, but let's face it. Vehicles are almost useless in the current map rotations on MP. For a game that prides itself on vehicle variety, it certainly says something for not being able to use them effectively. Sure, some players might be more skillful and able to use said vehicles in tight spaces, but that's a small segment of the community. Making vehicles nearly useless for the larger portion of your fanbase is not a good idea... It's as if there was no QA for this title.... -1

7 - Campaign was okay, at best.

I kind of like the direction it was going, but there was no sense of any real urgency during the entire plot. Sure, the guardians are waking up and things are going to hell, but it's best if we just look for the Master Chief who, we all know, is off doing what he does best. Saving mankind. But let's waste time trying to stop him even though we all know that even if we could, we'd be dooming mankind. Genius writing. BTW, that was sarcasm. -1

    8 - The menus.

Face it, there's so many redundancies and useless submenus that it can be a little confusing. For the first 20 minutes of online after the campaign, I spent nearly all of it going through each individual menu to figure out where everything was essentially hidden. Simplify it, seriously. -1

    9 - Characters are bad.

The characters for this title just ooze political correctness. While anyone can appreciate having a diverse team of protagonist, that doesn't mean they prefer it over character fluidity. They all feel forced and there is near zero chemistry between any of them. I'd rather an all white, all black, all male, or all female team as opposed to what they offered. It's a game, leave the political agenda at the door. Not to mention some of the commentary from the female spartans mid game.... No one cares nor was it called for to comment on the gender equality of Sangheilis. Again, leave the PC drivel at the door. -1

    10 - Free map packs!

I can't stress how important this is. It speaks for itself and one can only hope they continue this trend. +1

There you have it. A comprehensive breakdown of Halo 5.

The poster child of “Souless Corporate Games”, Halo 5 is one of the saddest falls from grace I have ever had the misfortune to witness.
Technically functional but devoid of all personality, heart, and soul that made the original trilogy such a massive success. Halo 5 is what happens when a publisher prioritizes HOW and game plays over, and at the expense, of everything else in the title.

Visual wise it’s an absolute mess. It’s hard to tell enemy ranks apart, and sometimes even different enemy species apart. Most of the vehicles and armor look like they were designed for the 14 year old Mountain Dew guzzler demographic while completely smashing established lore and canon.
I guess the point I’m dancing around is that this just doesn’t FEEL like a Halo game; it’s lost everything that made it different and special, all of it replaced with a generic and predictable plot filled with bland and unlikable characters.
Had this game been made with something other than a Halo skin slapped over the top of it I would probably have enjoyed it a lot more, but as it stands it’s frankly an insult to the previous trilogy of games.
If they could somehow combine the story and lore of Halo 3 with the mechanics of Halo 5 it would be the best Halo game ever made, hands down.
Sadly, however, Microsoft and 343 made all of the wrong choices when it came to Halo 5.

And why am I only playing as the Chief for 2 levels? Wow that sucks. At least it's a long campaign... Oh wait, I finished it in less than 6 hours. /sigh

The multiplayer levels feel very poorly designed where jumping off accidentally happens a lot, and spawning at the edge of the level facing the outside boundaries don't help. And don't get me started on the broken spawning. Just hope that you don't spawn in the same location more than twice or you're going to give the enemy team an easy win.

The aiming as I said is terrible, the removed all the auto aim from the previous halo games and implemented their own bullet magnetism. So if you aim near then you're going to hit them anyway regardless if you're reticule isn't actually on your target.

Warzone feels like Pay to Win, I've opened over 20 packs and yet to see any heavy drops like scorpions or wraiths. All I've got are Mongoose and Ghosts. Where if you decide do drop your hard earnt money you're more likely to get these heavy armored vehicles.

But one you use them they're gone forever so the cycle continues! I guess they need to feed their children some way right?

After Halo 5 all I can say is give up 343, you had your chance at Halo and it's time to pass the torch to a better developer

343 is riding on the coat tails of this Halo franchise and they knew that no matter how crappy this game was people would buy it. This game feels cheap and uninspired. The voice acting sounds like they just read from a piece of paper, no emotion at all. The alien's and their weapons even look stupid, their limbs aren't even connected to their body.

No splitscreen, the game play feels like a cartoon, the cut scenes are made for little kids. Not for players who grew up with Halo. 343 has swindled all existing Halo fans into buying a game that is not Halo. It would be a good game if it was named something else and not associated with the Halo series.

Took 4 hrs to install on the sluggish Xbox One and 3,5 hrs to finish the single player campaign. The gameplay is good but if you prefer single player campaigns, forget about it. It's not worth the money. I'm getting tired of the terrible Xbox One platform and consider to throw the ugly piece of s.. out.

Halo 5 does nothing to shake that feeling from you as you play through the campaign. If anything it just drives the point home as you rapidly watch the story twist and morph into something not even reminiscent of bungies halo. Words cannot convey my dissapointment. Expand

This game doesn't deserve the hate it gets, the campaign is pretty good and the multiplayer is PERFECT.

There's no big fight between the 2 Spartans and it focuses on Locke who no one cares about. The campaign is shorter than destiny, a lot of elements and names for things seems copied from destiny and it's just not fun. It's 4 in better frames but not graphics. I think the PVP was mostly better and had less issues but for long time fans who like the story they will be very disappointed. The end itself is a mask in the face and for the amount well I'm very upset I dropped so much money on it... I wouldn't even buy this for 30 bucks if I was you. 343 showed promise with 4 but lost it completely with 5. I think Microsoft messed up a lot and missed out on any chance at "goty", I know that's hard with exclusives but in the past it anyone had a chance it would've been halo. I honestly see Microsoft giving up on console gaming in the next 3-5 years. They're not doing well and their biggest exclusive is ruined. Expand

The multiplayer is where this game falls right on its ass. The ground-pound is one of the most useless moves you can do. To anyone who has played any Halo game in their life, it's just a perfect chance for them to pelt you with bullets (combined with Radar and the dash move, a way to see the player and evade). The game focuses on power weapons, telling you when they spawn, and encourages good play with them. So to returning Halo veterans, all that skill with the Battle rifle and grenades is almost worthless. Power weapons require very little skill to use and usually amount to 45% of all kills in one match. Most other kills amount to spraying the assault rifle with a bunch of your team mates nearby. Power weapons were important in other Halo games, but they were balanced. Now you just camp in the area of the strongest weapon and constantly get more ammo for it. The multiplayer maps feel a little too small for 4 vs 4 and their layouts can range from simple design to maddening confusing. I completely dislike the zoom-in feature on most guns. In old Halo games it zoomed-in so you couldn't see your hud but got a better shot. The zoom-in feature in Halo 5 is useless on most guns as it lets you look down the sights. This would be helpful... in Call Of Duty, but it's worthless here. Your radical doesn't change in Halo, there's no point. The new req system is... lame. It's a direct clone of Counter - Strike: Global Offensive. This would still be fine if it wasn't used only in one game mode. If you're going to commit to a new system of unlocking, you should apply it to everything. Take a chance, believe in your new system! But they chose to take the safe route, only for those who want to try it. Then why even have it in the first place? So you can drain another $3 from impatient gamers? The multiplayer mode amounts to plenty of sticking together, bullet spraying and camping. No strats, just point, shoot and camp. Does that sound like fun? Overall, Halo 5 tries to change up it's multiplayer but fails to commit to it. Halo is desperately trying to lure Call Of Duty players back to Halo. And as someone who detests the CoD series since Black Ops 1, I can honestly say Halo 5 is almost as bad as CoD: Ghosts. Expand

Locke and Chief never had their long awaited showdown, instead Locke was trying to save chief for more than half the game. All in all, the campaign was nothing like what people thought it was going to be.

Now for the multiplayer. The multiplayer is spot on, with the new Smart Aim feature on weapons, which adds something new to the game. Arena is fun, and even more fun with friends, especially breakout, which is the new elimination mode, where you either wipe out the entire enemy team to win a round, or you take the flag and bring it to the other side of the map, similar to Capture the Flag. I found myself having a wonderful time in the multiplayer.

Now, warzone is the most hyped mode for what it promised, which was the cross between PvE and PvP on a huge map with you being able to purchase weapons, armor abilities, and huge vehicles ranging from the scorpion tank, the mantis or a banshee.

Though it is unfortunate that there is only one map for Warzone, that is expected since it's such a huge map. Even though there's only one, you still have loads of fun.

So from the disappointing campaign, to the spot on Arena mode, to the excellent Warzone mode, to the combat system and visuals, Halo 5: Guardians gets a 8/10 from me.

An epic experience. The campaign is very good, with an epic scale and emotional punch but it has flaws such as the heavy reliance on its own universe, still, there's a lot of fun to be had here and the multiplayer is truly brilliant, it revives the competition soul Halo once had. For any fan of the franchise it's a must own.

I've been a die hard halo fan since combat evolved which I bought my first Xbox for, 1-3 and Reach still represent the pinnacle of fps perfection to me. So I got halo 5 deluxe edition pre ordered, got the game and... I'm absolutely devastated at what 343 have made. It doesn't feel at all like Halo anymore, the graphics are blurry and jaggy, the draw range for resolution is appalling with heavy pixelation to boot. Level design is poor and cramped/linear, firefights are unintelligent and repetitive, team AI is ridiculously bad, some "missions" are basically extended interactive cut scenes, the story is dubious at best.. I've never gotten halfway through a Halo and literally lost all desire to continue before this, I had to force myself to continue. And then the multiplayer customisation is another huge step back from Reach, low res armour with very poor colour modifications and choices, basic emblem design.. Halo Reach looked better and played better than Halo 5. I don't think 343 are capable of carrying the Halo franchise. The multiplayer is also very bad, serious issues with aiming and weapon balance, really lazy map design, pay to win REQ or " Wreck" system. I'm not against innovation either but most of the changes have been poorly initialised (squad mechanics, pointless Spartan abilities, being broken out of iron sights when hit, missions that are basically interactive cut-scenes with no shooting!) they even went backwards imo by removing Armour abilities. 343i are not worthy of the mantle of responsibility they owe to Halo fans (pun intended). These aren't thoughtless complaints either, there are many issues with the campaign and design of 343i Halo titles and they aren't addressing them. Honestly do any of you think the very limited AI, personality bereft, bullet sponge, dull as dishwater prometheans or equally poor squad AI/dull as a stone characters (not including blue team members or Buck though their AI sucks bad) improves the Halo genus? Or the many contradicting nonsense plot devices? The story is just poor. Aside to the awful storyline let's take a closer look at the characters, compare Osiris to NOBLE team who were incredibly interesting, varied, and unique; Locke and his team excluding Buck are boring and clichéd, Commander Sarah Palmer is outright irritating. Spartan IV's? How the heck does Locke fight the Chief on an even keel?? How is Osiris shown to equal Blue team?? Spartan II's are superior in every way not to mention the experience gulf here. Someone put a nail in the coffin above by saying the campaign is designed for co-op. That is so wrong! They shouldn't ever take away from the solo experience, some people don't like playing online and besides that it should work just as well in solo as a point of good design. For me my adventures with the Master Chief are over. I couldn't be more disappointed. Expand

I have been a Halo fan since Halo 2 it was my first Halo game, but how does it stack up against Halo 5? Does Halo 5 feel like a regular Halo game or does it not? Is that good or bad?

Let's start with the good things about Halo 5 within the story mode. Firstly, the game has truly outstanding visuals and movie like cut scenes. If you need to watch how 343 made the game, you should check out their video series called 'The Sprint' where 343 shows off how the game was made from story mode, online, and the cut scenes. Secondly, the game is locked in at stable 60 fps and 1080p resolution, but it will downgrade if needed. The game will downgrade in resolution "when we want to get really crazy with vehicles, visual effects and combat we can trade some of the resolution in order to maintain the crucial 60fps" as stated by Chris Haluke from 343. Third, before you start a level you can choose which character you would like to be within the Spartan team of Blue Team or Fireteam Osiris that you are playing in that level. Its a neat feature and it allows everyone to play different characters for every mission you play... it gives a bit of variety. Fourth, the revives! AI and or your co-op buddies can now revive you when you go down. Basically another alternative to complete the level and not restart the checkpoint because one person died. Something that should stay in future titles.

Now the bad things within the Halo 5 story mode. First off, the campaign sucked... I mean to the point where it was only a 4 hour storyline (on Heroic difficulty) with 15 Missions (3 missions with Master Chief team, and 12 missions with Locke team) and the worst part is that the game ends with a horrible cliffhanger that leads to Halo 6. Second, in Halo 5 it makes Master Chief look like a traitor because he started to look for Cortana because he had a vision of her calling him. 343 makes him look like he is AWOL but, hes not a traitor towards the Spartans or anyone. And then, 343 makes this new character named 'Locke' look like a hero because he is trying to "save him/rescue him." Third, the boss battles are kinda lame to be completely honest. You fight Cortana's guardian named 'Warden Eternal' around 6 times throughout the game, which makes it very repetitive. It was shown in trailers that Master Chief and Locke are enemies, but not one non-cinematic battle between them happened. Only one battle happened and it was a cinematic between Master Chief and Locke... and Locke lost the fight.

Finally, let's talk multiplayer. Mostly the only game modes I'm interested in are Breakout (one life CTF game mode kinda like SnD from Call of Duty), SWAT, and Warzone (a huge 12 vs 12 game mode w/ AI and boss battles) to be completely honest. 343 has stated that all DLC for the game will be free and Forge will come out in December (in 2015) so that is a plus for everyone. The game does have microtransactions the items are called 'Requisitions' in which you can use most of these items in the new game mode Warzone. But mostly the reason why people buy the packs it because they include character gear in which you can customize your Spartan with a new helmet, body armor, etc. The packs range from $24.99 to $1.99 per pack/bundle and they are NOT mandatory to play Warzone. You can earn 'Requisitions' in game within game modes you play and finish. Lastly, finding players for games is fast (better than the release of Halo: MCC) and it was needed for both the game and 343.

In conclusion, the horrible storyline within Halo 5 brought down the score and that is why I gave it a 8/10. Its a 4 hour storyline with a horrible cliffhanger that leads to Halo 6, very little and not good boss battles, limited story missions with Master Chief (that is one of the reasons why people buy Halo) and the game is mostly focused on the new character (Locke) and his team. Halo 5 does feel like a regular Halo but more fast pace and more competitive in that sense. Sorry 343, but you can do better or even a better job at starting a story for Halo 6. It doesn't feel like a $60 dollar game.

And it's frustrating, it really is, because you know those 298 negative reviews virtually all came from people who had their opinions long before the game was released. You know how it is - pick up the game, play the first mission on Easy, get destroyed in a game of multiplayer, return the game in a fit of indignation and ruin the day of some poor Gamestop employee with their incessant blathering.

Well I'm here to tell you one thing, and one thing only - do not, under any circumstances, listen to them. If you're a Halo fan, if you want to give a fun new shooter a fair go, do not. I've been down that road.

Instead, read this, a review from someone who's loved Halo ever since CE dropped and understands what makes Halo what it is.

Halo is a fantastic step in the right direction, and I'm eager to see what they do next. Obviously, the point of greatest contention is the new Spartan abilities, first and foremost amongst them the new Smart Scope. If someone calls it ADS, immediately stop listening to them - it's not. Smart Scope is a system which allows you to zoom in to various degrees with basically every weapon to reduce spread and shoot with greater precision - if you do this whilst in the air, you will hang in the air for several seconds. This accommodates long range combat on the larger maps that 343i has gone with. There are two main catches - the first is that, in a departure to the typical ADS mechanic of your CODs and Battlefields, Smart Scope does not 'snap' to the target closest to your reticle. The second and most obvious catch is that if the player receives any damage in this state, they will be kicked out of ADS and dropped to the ground if they're hanging. This makes it absolutely impractical to use in CQB, unlike your run of the mill ADS.

I'd run you through the other abilities, but I've got a character limit xD

Be assured, however, that the abilities work very well together, particularly the new melee abilities, ground pound and charge. You feel much more like a super soldier when, once the ammunition runs dry, you can literally turn yourself into a weapon, smashing aside vehicles and knocking fools out from above. Sprinting has been balanced after Halo 4 to prevent escaping from combat - sprinting prevents your energy shields (effectively health) from regenerating. Fight is usually preferable to flight.

The other major point which these people make is the story - granted, it is a little convoluted. In fact, maybe knock a point off my score if you haven't played all the games and read the books. But I assure you, as a fan of the series, the story makes perfect sense and is wonderfully fan servicing. Blue Team in particular have been a long time coming. The constant twists and turns the story took were beautifully crafted, and I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. The people that complain about the ending and the length of the campaign just secretly want more, I assure you.

I could write more, but my score speaks for itself. If Halo 5 isn't one of the all time greatest Halo games, then I'll be damned. Thanks for reading.

Arena online play mixes in slayer, capture the flag, as well as strongholds and a new gametype breakout. Newcomers to the game will enjoy everything that it has to offer, and original halo guys and gals will appreciate feel of the classic weapons, which, if you are good with, you will likely opt for them over several of the power weapons. (I will say that I am not a fan of the plasma caster or Fuel Rod Canon)

Also, the new ranking system is similar to the old 1-50, ranking up and down solely through wins however, it has improved on the that as well adding in top levels of Onyx and Champion exclusively for the elite.

Overall, dont go through winter without dedicated much time to this awesome game!

    The Multiplayer
The multiplayer is pretty good but it feels pretty old and a bit uninspired also. I just feel like the Halo 5 multiplayer is not up to today's standards and that other games does multiplayer much better.

Bottom line is, I feel like this game was not worth the price I paid for it, I feel almost a bit cheated out of my money and lied to by the devs and publisher, what they promised was not what we got.
What is even worse is that, this is an Xbox One exclusive, it should be the best thing available on the Xbox One, but it just feels rushed and unfinished.
I love the Halo series, I really do, but this game just left a bad taste in my mouth.

BUT; 343i announced the omission of various modes of play as the compromises they had to make in order to make the game bigger and maintain a high frame rate. Well, the frame rate is high; I'll give it that. Graphics are not significantly better than the last gen. The campaign is weak with convoluted, unresolving story elements. Narrow paths winding to a boss battle - over and over again. AI is inconsistent. The best features of the game are online MP, and for someone who doesn't play that alone very often, it's not enough of a plus to justify the steps backward the developers have taken. With no local multiplayer, 80 or 90% of the game's long term value is gone for those who like to play that way. This is not progress. Expand

The game proudly shows its bright colors and new gameplay gimics, but it does every major fan of the Halo franchise a major disservice by creating the single most pathetic attempt at a Halo story to be seen by the series beloved fans. The potential story shown through trailers and teasers appears to show this amazing and intricate story experience, with depth and lore abounding- yet when you finish the campaign, you may feel like the series you have grown to love for its amazing and out-of-this-world story telling has decided to become a lump of coal among a group of diamonds. The story begins with what appears to be a halfway decent story, but as you progress through, it seems that the writers become more and more confused, throwing in random and meaningless story twists and events that in and of themselves make less and less sense. The game, going away from its roots of grandiose and colossal events and threat, and leaves it for a pathetic, all too similar story as Halo 4. The writers, instead of making an ending that at LEAST has closure and a meaningful or well delivered closing, leaves the campaign open ended and with the least closure possible.

If you are a fan of the story of Halo, forgo the campaign in this game. Do not BUY this game. Do not let companies take beloved and well written stories, and butcher them for the sake of online multiplayer. Halo fans deserve better than what this game delivers.

    Much better.

As a long time Halo and Xbox fan, this game is utterly disappointing. Sure it looks great, but the story is lame and playing online doesn't have that Halo feel anymore.. Not to mention there is a huge lack of maps and variety. This should not have the Halo name. II highly recommend you play it somewhere before buying.

I understand, this may be an issue for some however it was announced a while back that Halo 5 had no split screen, so reviewing a game negatively for something which was announced to be missing from the game is absurd.

It would be like me reviewing Forza 6 and complaining the game doesn't include guns.....they're not supposed to be in the game. Most of the franchises now focus on online multiplayer, gone are the days of split screen, this holds true with most games, not just Halo 5.

Other than that, the game has been enjoyable on 4 player co-op, still not had any connection issues... YET! Fingers crossed this continues after the shambles that was MCC.

Not finished the story yet so can't comment on this "terrible" ending i've been reading about. Online has been a lot of fun.

Warzone's are just crazy battles, headshot only Slayer's are really fun also, especially with the way the guns feel now.

All in all it's been an enjoyable experience so far. While I believe the negative reviews to be legit, they seem to be from people who have bought a game expecting something to be in it which wasn't .... it takes a 20 second google search to check before buying the game, this would be my advice.

I'm sure this won't be taken well.....

    CAMPAIGN
-The campaign is not as advertised. The whole epic Locke hunting Chief around the galaxy and having a stand-off campaign as shown in the commercials (even suggested on the cover art!!) simply isn't the storyline.
-In fact, there's barely a storyline to admire and of what there is, like with Halo 4, it requires a knowledge of the EU to understand the background/characters which is a bad decision imo (this hampered Halo 4 too).
-Playing as Locke for 80% of the time is also something I wasn't invested in. The Master Chief IS Halo. -Ultimately it's forgettable, the first Halo campaign imo to be so. I didn't like Halo 4's campaign but at least it was quite memorable. Makes me wonder what the hell 343 have been doing for 3 years.
-Level designs, like the story, are also pretty boring/repetitive, no major set pieces to enjoy like the double scarab takedown level in Halo 3 for example. Again this is was a similar problem in 4.
-Didn't care for the squads who were pretty unintelligent AI with 0 character investment.
-(I read about all of the above before playing so I was at least prepared for the disappointment and was conscious of it as a consolation).
-Also very short, 6 hours ish, for being 15 levels long.
-It does look great visually however, very slick. Prometheans are more enjoyable to face than in Halo 4. That's honestly all I can say is good about it.

    MULTIPLAYER
-Multiplayer is much better than in 4. The Spartan abilities are a welcome addition to the series (campaign too I should add), nice and fresh idea. Good way to solve the unbalanced armour abilities in Reach and 4. -343 have separated old from new too: Old style Halo is back - balanced, same loadout, weapons around the map type gameplay in Arena. And indeed it generally does feel like the old Halo days thank goodness with the new feature of Spartan abilities fitting in nicely.
-And then Halo 4 style unbalanced craziness in Warzone, taken to the next level with REQ packs, different gun sights as an example etc. This works in Warzone because the maps are huge, AI plays a part and it's 24 players hence the in-your-face, skill based competitiveness of Arena doesn't really come into it - it's more of a social experience so I think things being unbalanced actually helps the vastness of the maps become more hectic, more varied and hence more enjoyable on a casual level. Put simply, I like it.
-I'm pretty neutral on REQ packs
-Lobbies are horrible, no gamertags visible. I didn't think lobby design could get worse than 4 but 343 somehow managed to top it.
-Maps are visually very samey, hence boring and repetitive to look at. And a mere 3 Warzone maps. Some decent layouts however, particularly to suit the new abilities.
-Armour customisation aesthetically looks slightly better than in 4, again pretty bad though compared to Reach and 3's artistic approach.
    - Very few gametypes - why on earth so few I don't know.
    - Overall I like but don't love halo 5's multiplayer. I did not like 4's.

    SUMMARY
-Ultimately with 4 and now definitely 5, Halo has become an odd parody of its past self.
-Terribly disappointing campaign - I honestly have no interest in what's to come in Halo 6. None at all.
-Multiplayer is a decent outing which I will certainly play again and more than 4 but not religiously like I did with 3 and Reach (didn't have Live for 2), it's just not polished enough overall like the latter 2.
-I truly don't think I will buy Halo 6 until at least a year or so after it comes out when it's half price and then it will only be to see what has come of the franchise, not because I really want it as a fan anymore which really saddens me.

I never did a 4 review, would probably give that 5/10 for reference. The other main series games (CE, 2, 3, Reach either a 9 or more likely a 10). For this, I'd say 5/10 for campaign, 8/10 for multiplayer (7 overall is me being generous I'd say).

While I respect peoples opinion, that doesn't mean I don't recognize blind hate. Halo 5 may not be the best halo but it still manages to be a great one. Halo 5 has been re imagined from designs, visuals, and most notably the game play. Since Halo 3, I've always wanted spartans to play like their portrait in the cut scenes and novels instead of slow weak bullet magnets and now with sprint, thrusters, clamber, ground pounds, smart scope, and spartan charge, halo 5 is not only fast and intense but makes me not wanna go back to other halos. It's game play improves both campaign with larger/more packed levels and smarter/larger scale of enemies to multiplayer with balanced/flushed out maps and competitive/all-out war game modes. In fact its multiplayer is my favorite in the series with csr ranking system returning, arena with classic and new competitive modes and the all new warzone with large scale combat against spartans and ai. Both complement each other too. Halo 5's the first halo where I've really taken the competitive playing serious since many of my games have ended close and have made me already show many emotions (anger, happiness, frustration, relief, empowerment, weak, etc) and when I got tried of screaming and calling out from arena, I would switch to war zone where variety of unlockable weapons and vehicles joined with 24 players/ai made for chaotic and over the top explosive battles and craziness. And as before, if I started not taking it seriously over felt to loose I would jump back into arena for more focused and competitive games. Which ever you choose, you earn points towards req packs which give you random weapons, vehicles, armor, boosts, etc. that most you can use for war zone and some non game changing things like armor for arena. You can also purchase these but what makes this fare versus other micro-transactions is not only do you have the option to use in game money but to use a lot of these, you need to get kills/points to build a meter to use them so if your not good it doesn't matter how much you buy if you cant reach the level to use it. And it makes the progression more rewarding. As for campaign, the story follows both master chief/blue team and the new agent locke/fire team Osiris as chief and blue team have become AWOL and lockes team has been sent to bring him home until devastating events caused by forerunner beings called the guardians risked humanities destruction. For one I did enjoy playing the campaign as the levels are large with more routes/hidden passages, larger scale of enemies, incredible set pieces/visuals, many hidden collectibles/Easter eggs/special weapons, and 4 player coop online. Its a blast to play alone or with friends. The story however is a little mixed. The main plot and the so called "greatest hunt in gaming history" really doesn't live to the name with rushed events, lack of blue team, and a mix of both 3 missions just made to "take a break from the action" to a cliff hanger that make it story feel short and underwhelming. That said, its not just another mediocre shooter story as it has some good moments from the dialogue between character and Intel to jaw dropping moments like chief fighting locke or the first time you see a guardian rise. Recommend playing with friends on heroic or harder for a true lengthy experience. My main complaint though about this halo is its cut back of features for its launch. While some cuts like forge and big team battle are temporary, other things have been cut including split-screen, voting in matchmaking, customizing chest/shoulder/wrist/& leg pieces are now just one armor piece, file share, screenshots/video making in theater that still just goes for pvp and not campaign, and social playlists. Now while these do seem like little nitpicks as well as the fact 343 will be adding loads of content through its launch (as we speak shotty snipers has just been added with more reqs, patches, free maps, forge, and big team battles being planned to be added soon) I still can't help this has been one of the smallest launches content wise for a halo game in a while. That said, it still has plenty to keep you busy from its addicting multiplayer and game play, its great progression system, and a solid campaign. It might not be as beloved as say halo 1-3 but it is for sure NOT A BAD GAME and way better than halo 4 as well as my favorite multiplayer in the series. Expand

And the campaign is not at all without it's memorable moments, including the end of a particular story arc that has been a long time coming. The end while a massive cliffhanger, but despite what all of the angry trolls giving the game 0s and 1s will tell you, it's no worse than Halo 2, which this game has many similar problems to, particularly involving the advertising and story. And despite what aforementioned trolls keep bringing up about the time spent as both Master Chief and Agent Locke (Chief having 3 dedicated missions to Locke's 12) Chief's missions are about three times as long as those of Locke, and since 3 of Locke's missions essentially boil down to interactive custscenes that can be competed in under a minute, the playtime actually evens out.

On the other hand Multiplayer is better than ever. Halo's classic with a solid mix of both competitive and casual modes with more of each on the way (Shotty Snipers was last week's "weekend social playlist" and Big Team Battle is being added this week, along with another Weekend social playlist") The online netcode is stellar, and dedicated servers for all playlists and custom games is an absolute blessing on console. A few flaws with multiplayer do come to mind. Several playlists (particularly Free For All, SWAT and Warzone) have horrible spawns. And Warzone, while a great concept still needs some tweaking, since even the slightest bit of momentum from one team often turns the game horrifically one-sided, And warzone assault in it's current state is just bad. These maps were not designed for invasion scenarios. That being said the vast majority of multiplayer is still excellent and provide tons of replayablility.

Lastly a topic of note are the micro transactions, They are not invasive at all, You can earn even gold rec packs in only a few games making buying them with cash hardly worth it.

And an even greater sin- the game launched without Forge. I'm willing to forgive all that with the assumption that, sooner rather than later, these modes will be brought into the game. And in a way, that will give me more reason to return to the game and extend its life. As is, the game has an unprecedented lack of content on the multiplayer side (for a Halo game). I will come back and change this 9 into a 7 if these features don't eventually become available. Another caveat is that Halo 5 has no splitscreen, and while that deffinitely sours my experience (I'm one of those constant screen splitters)- I haven't let that affect my review.

So...! What can I say about Halo 5: Guardians? Well, it's certainly the most refreshing, new entry in the series since Halo 2. The gameplay is crisper, smoother than ever before. The new mechanics fit perfectly within the Halo sandbox- and I know that years from now when I return to the Master Chief Collection and try to Spartan Charge, it'll feel extremely outdated. The weapon sandbox is probably the best in the series, though it's a little disappointing that there are only two or three new weapons (though in their defense, most of the Forerunner weapons have been changed entirely and feel much more unique), and the vehicles are just as good as ever (though time will tell if they're any good in multiplayer- we'll have to wait for BTB since Warzone isn't the same on that front). The enemies are without a doubt the best in the series- somehow, 343i has managed to make the Prometheans exceed even the Covenant in the fun factor, challenge and uniqueness which is just fantastic. Aside from the overused Warden enemy. The Campaign features some amazing battles and scenes that take Halo 3's Scarab to a whole new level, and the level design in each mission is just amazing- full of choices and replayability. I haven't had this much fun with a Campaign since Halo 3. The multiplayer has to be the funnest, most competitive in the series as well and as soon as it gets more content it'll easily surpass every previous entry in the series.

Storywise, I came into this game expecting pure crap (which is what the reviews were saying) and was pleasantly surprised. Maybe that was because I already read the books and already know Blue Team and Halsey's backstory- but nothing about the story felt jarring until the ending. It's safe to say there's a whole big element in the story that 343i hid away in the promos that just doesn't make sense with what we saw before- one character here is so different, and you don't even get a hint at the explanation of why and what changed. It also feels a little like the new Spartan team Osyris was shoehorned, or that the original aim for the story missed its mark. The whole Master Chief vs Locke rivalry is almost nonexistent- so don't come with big expectations on that front... But as I said I was pleasantly surprised by many things. I loved how 343i handled Halsey, the Infinity crew and the Elites. I loved how 343i handled the short arcs on Meridian and Sanghelios- each feeling like a separate act in the game and above all I love where the story is headed- even if the way 343i took us there could have been better (especially pertaining to a certain character which I won't mention for spoiler reasons). One more thing about the story: the whole game is a first act of a larger storyline which will hopefully conclude in Halo 6. That means it ends in a massive cliffhanger. I personally don't mind cliffhangers, and sometimes even like them, but I know others will be angry at this.

Another thing I'd like to touch is thr graphics. They're by far the best in the series, and that's especially easy to see in the Sanghelios missions- which are downright beautiful. This is the first Halo game where I feel like I'm stepping into an actually alien world since CE- the environments are just weird and awesome and don't look at all like something you'll find on Earth, which in a way fulfills a promise Halo games have been failing at for years. The new art direction is great- from enemy designs to vehicle designs to armors you unlock in multiplayer. The game just looks much better than Halo 4, and it's a refreshing take on the Halo Universe in a good way. Some scenes and explosions will still look a bit underwhelming graphically, though.

    So to sum it up:
    Gameplay/Level Design- easy 10
    Graphics/Art Direction- 9
    Story- 7
Features- TBD, as is it's a 5 but we already know Forge is coming alongside at least some multiplayer game modes

    Cons:
    - Weak story
    - Campaign is surprisingly short
    - Locke is used too much, 85% of the campaign is Locke the other 15% is Chief
    - Other fire team members are not well fleshed out, can be forgettable
    - REQ packs and the microtransactions
    - Disappointing cliffhanger ending that isn't deserved
    - No Forge
    - No Firefight or Spartan Ops modes
    - No splitscreen
    - False build up of Locke vs Chief
    - Recycled boss battles

The game has some new interesting features however the campaign is a huge let down. REQ packs fell kind of forced for Warzone. This games is worth owning if you're a major fan of the series however it won't attract the casual fans or bring more people into the fanbase. Final Verdict 7/10

Now don't get me wrong the game is great but it is missing so much. Where is big team battle and infection? Griffball and the other really fun game modes? They said forge will be released in December because they want to put time into it. Why don't you release the game with everything in the package and not leave one of the most used modes in Halo history. The campaign is a let down as well. The story is mediocre and the only thing keeping me interested was the really well done cutscenes and some of the great moments that occasionally happen during the story. And the marketing did not show what the story actually is, it showed a exaggerated version of what the actual story is. The multiplayer in general is good. Breakout is a great addition to the classic Halo game modes and all of the normal Halo game modes are there apart from big team battle. Which has been replaced by Warzone, which for me alright. There are now AI on the battlefield and you have to capture bases and then destroy the enemy core. Now this is all well and good until you find out how to get weapons and vehicles. You have to open packs. And there are micro transactions now. Great one 343. And to get armor you have to get them from packs. No unlocks or anything. No rank system either. But there are some great editions to the gameplay of Halo 5. You can now stop in the air when you aim so it is easier to get enemies. And you can now aim down your sights. Overall Halo 5 is a fun game that has flaws and needs to improve. When they add forge and big team battle which they are apparently adding, then the game will get a higher score. And add infection and griffball while your at it. It's not what I was expecting but I still enjoyed it and there is room for improvement. 7.5/10 Expand

The story does that annoying thing of finishing on a cliffhanger like Halo 2 did. Maybe this is the fate of the middle game in each Halo trilogy?
But overall I enjoyed it. gameplay was smooth, nice new movement features, and nice visuals. The Warden Boss fight got a little repetitive but apart from that nothing jumps out as being a negative for me.

    Warzone is a great addition.

Much better after BTB has been added.

    Arena gamemodes are great overall

It is nothing like hunt the truth, it is nothing like the ad campaign, they never really wanted to hurt the chief there was no stress about locke and the chief really hashing it out. In the end they portrayed locke as if in equal standing to the chief and made one of my most favorite characters a villain who made positively no sense. The end of the game left me both mystified and tremendously frustrated as all it made me feel was that the whole campaign was the prolouge to halo 6. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have never in my entire life felt so let down and honestly heartbroken over a story, in any medium (books, movie, tv, games, etc.) as I felt after finishing the Halo 5 campaign. Let alone the idiotic decisions to force Locke down our throats, or the absolute laziness of having to fight the Warden again and again and again and again, the nonsensical writing and ending of this campaign has absolutely destroyed the Halo/Master Chief story. Master Chief is no longer cool, unique or special. He's just one of a million Spartans, another soldier same as all the others and Cortana (for no explainable or justifiable reason) has become a Genocidal maniac worse than any in the history of the planet... All of which happened while we had our back turned because we were humping a football with Locke. Even if the writers wanted to have Cortana go bad, the key of the story would have been Chief anguishing over it and wrestling with trying to cope with it as he was forced to fight her... their shared history and relationship being strained and affecting their decisions and actions. All elements that this story glosses over with barely a shrug in a single, stupid cut scene... just like the supposed argument with Locke. Seriously, this is the worst story line and story writing I have ever encountered. The only reason I will be looking to Halo 6 is to see how awful it is. Like the morbid curiosity of gawking at a terrible accident on the highway. BTW, I hear Nintendo is coming out with a great Mario game where you get to play as one of Mario's faceless classmates in plumbing school and Princess Peach turns out to be a Nazi! Yay!!! Expand

    - REQ system is fun, new and innovative to Halo.
    - Very replayable.
    - Music and sound is outstanding, a big step up.
    - Alien worlds that actually feel alien and immersive.
    - Many fun Easter eggs to be found.
    - Constant 60 fps with dynamic resolution.
    - Great ranking system.
    - New 4 player co-op campaign system.
    - Introduces fun new characters to the plot of Halo. (And reintroduces some old)
    - Talented voice work.
    - Forge (appears - not released until December) to be extremely innovative and fun.
    - An actual challenge on legendary (compared to Halo 3 or 4)
    - Enemies are fun to fight. (Yes even the Warden, who is extremely overused, although it makes sense story-wise.)
    - Creative weapon and vehicle variants.
    - New armour system which makes it so Spartans don't look stupid, overly bulky or out of place.

    The bad:

    - Weak characters. (Some are anyway)
    - Heavily reliant on lore. (Can be a good thing)
    - Repetitive boss fights.
    - Texturing issues.
    - Minor bugs.
    - Map rotation is kind of broken.
    - Radar is way too close-range.
    - Not enough Chief missions.
    - Shortest campaign yet. (Even though extremely replayable especially with a friend)
    - Confusing advertising may be misleading.
    - Theater downgrade.

All in all, this game is a masterpiece. Yes, things could have been better like the inclusion of splitscreen for example, but seeing a feature like that in a game as complex as this is hard to imagine. A great title and definitely one to continue playing until the next instalment in the franchise. Peace!

In particular, the Warzone & Breakout modes in multi-player are incredible. The map sizes are just right, the graphics are great, the frame-rate is stable, the length of each game is perfect and the action is exciting from start to finish. Currently there are only three Warzone maps (despite us being promised 6 - 8) BUT 343 have promised 15 'free' DLC over the coming months, where I'm sure we will see more. This DLC could bump the game from an 8/10 to a 9 out of 10.

It's a shame about the story - especially as we waited so long for it, but if (like me) you're Halo experiences and expectations are geared around multi-player then you will not be disappointed.

Locke is an unlikeable edge fest and his character reads like an antisocial tween's Deviantart power fantasy.

Warzone is nice. I'm not sold on the Requisition system but it's not overly intrusive and the whole thing brings back memories of chaotic Big Team Battle games on Halo 3. The scoring system is a little off, it's possible for a team to control all the bases for the entire game and still lose because the enemy was just farming AI kills, but for a bit of lighthearted fun there's nothing wrong with it.

Arena is not competitive Halo, the maps are not designed well - they're far too big for 4vs4 and I think they've been deliberately enlarged to compensate for the continued existence of sprint. It doesn't feel like an arena shooter and the playlist name just rubs it in your face.

The levels are varied and interesting and the same can be said about the weapons. The game is beautiful, too; I often found myself backing away from the action and just staring at the scenery. It was clear that a lot of work went into this game. The enemies are similar to those of the original 3 games, and the Forerunner enemies are unique and fun to fight. The story is interesting and engaging. You're going to hear a lot of people griping about the story in this game, but chances are, it's because they didn't do their research. It literally takes 10 minutes to learn all the backstory to this game with a few simple web searches.

I suck at multiplayer so I'm not going to be much of a help reviewing that. But from what I can tell, Warzone is basically the original Battlefront: you go around a big map killing enemies and capturing command posts until time runs out or you get enough kills or something. It seems fun if you're willing to put the time into it.

All in all, I can honestly say that this game deserves a 10/10. Other reviewers will be griping about how 343 Industries is ruining the Halo franchise by trying to make the world different from the original trilogy or whatever, but I really think they're doing a fine job. It's like they think that 343 is bad only because it's not Bungie. When people look back at the old games, they only remember the good things about them. Because why remember the bad, right? Well, because then it would be a fair comparison to 343's games, and we can't have a fair comparison. We're too salty about Halo changing development companies. Well, what I have to say to those people is this: Halo 5: Guardians is damn fun. Get over yourselves.

Halo 5: Guardians is okay. Its campaign is rubbish, but the multiplayer is solid thanks to the foundation it’s built upon. Warzone is a really enjoyable experience, and while combat is still mostly about tossing grenades and hitting the melee button, the whole Requisition gimmick adds some much-needed flavor to proceedings.

The latest Halo is a big deal only for hardcore Halo fans. For me the single player campaign was unbearably pompous and despite 1080p and 60 fps the visuals are not as breathtaking as they once were in Halo 4. The game builds a solid foundation for Halo 6, but it’s not one of those games you absolutely have to play. [13/2015, p.48]

With a more accessible and engaging story and solid new designs for the Prometheans, Halo 5 is a major improvement over Halo 4. Warzone is a great addition to the multiplayer, though the mode seems to have some game balance issues. [Nov 2015]
