This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First off the multiplayer:
-The gameplay is so fast it is pretty much on par with destiny speed and almost titanfall speed.
-The beeping noises that play every time you do pretty much anything are basically ear cancer.
-There is no split screen even for campaign (sorry, you dont get to play with your friends who come over or your siblings anymore)
-Once again you can't play as elites
-The smart scope is basically just ads in disguise
-The spartan abilities are literally carbon copies of mechanics from other games
-The maps are pretty much all garbage
-In warzone, you start off with power weapons from packs instead of actually finding them on the battlefield like normal halo games
-rocket launcher, battle rifle and sniper rifle skins are literally eye cancer
-The countdown to when power weapons are going to spawn is just a noob magnet and makes everyone wait at the spawn location
-the amount of hits you can take when your shields are down is about 1/3 of previous halo games

    Campaign
-Story is so flat and stale i wouldn't even call it 2D but 1.5D
-The entire plot is something out of a fanfiction website
-Cortana suddenly has a "I WANT TO BE AN OVERLORD" complex
-Cortana is physical being now which makes no sense
    -Cortana has clothing
-Cortana looks ugly and is not even hot anymore
-Cortana is the antagonist for some reason
-Locke is a try hard angsty person
-highest number of missions in a halo game, shortest campaign
    -WALK AND TALK MISSIONS
-it would have been cool is you could shoot allies in the walk and talk missions making them turn on you like in the command center in halo ce, but no, you are forced to keep your gun down. WTF
-Enjoyed how halo was unique in the way you are a bada$$ lone wolf fighting an entire army of aliens? well guess what? Now you get a fireteam like in call of duty, battlefield and every other generic shooter.
-instead of dying, you now get downed and have to get a teammate to pick you up, otherwise you have to wait a whole minute to respawn
-because the coop campaign is now online, you get inconsistencies with your teammates. what you see on your screen is not what is happening on your teammates screen. If you are teabagging an elite, you friend will see you teabagging the air instead.
-The music is out of place most of the time and is a failed attempt to remake the original soundtrack
-The arbiter appears for a few missions but now sounds like a crazy cultist revolutionist instead of the awesome bada$$ we all used to love
-There are no good memorable lines in the dialog. Remember quoting halo and sounding cool? well not anymore.
-The voice acting is awkward and lines are cheesy
-everything is really clunky like in halo 4
-all the battles feel the same with similar room geometry
-enemies kill you pretty much instantly with your shields down
-now you can get beaten to death by a grunt
-jackels sound like something an 80s cartoon bird character
-you cant stick hunters for some reason
-"boss fights" with warden eternal every hour or so
-the game assumes you know all of halo's expanded lore
-you cant pick up the skulls and hit people with them anymore. now if you pick them up, they just disappear
-Locke, not Master Chief, is the evident main character. Master Chief levels were just thrown in the game to try to satisfy people who wanted to play as their favourite green super soldier, but there are only 3 of them.

Dear 343, stop worrying about how to make a halo game and learn how to make a GAME. The only thing that matters is: is the game fun? The answer here is no. First up story: keep it simple and engage players with epic consequences. No one gives a f*** about Cortana! The story is messy, convoluted and boring, with cheesy forgettable characters. Second up gameplay: an improvement on halo 4 (yay) but ultimately still boring as well. All of your levels are just shooting galleries with no creativity. The promethian enemies are boring, which is not helped by the fact you have 3 types of guns for every tier which all do the same thing. Cut the number of guns and instead and make them more diverse to make battles more interesting. The second part to this is stop reusing old ideas! How many times do we need to blow up a reactor? Steal ideas (i.e. put your stamp on it) don't copy them. Multiple perspectives in halo 2 was fun because the covenant was an interesting enemy. Here no one cares about locke! We care about masterchief so let us play as him! Big mistake having no offline co-op as this made the game stand out. On top of that the music scores are pathetic! Take some money out of the graphics budget and pay a proper orchestra instead of this electronic crap with no character. Epic sound enhances the atmosphere of battles! So ultimately what happens when you have a weak story, boring missions, no offline co op and no atmosphere? A boring game that i can't even play with my friend! When it comes down to it, halo exists only to service its most die hard fans because there is nothing here for anyone else. Expand

I don't know who payed off the critics for their reviews. This Halo game was a complete disappointment. I waited hopefully for the next 343 installment of Halo after destiny was a complete turd. Well it wasn't. The story was boring. You fight one recycled boss over and over and over. The AI of your squad in single player are dumb as dirt. You don't actually die and have to wait to be revived by this retarded AI which may or may not reach you before your timer ends. In which case you have to sit there and wait 45 seconds to re spawn at the last checkpoint. Really pulls you out of the immersion of the game which really didn't pull me in anyway. The story was short, boring, acting was rubbish. Don't waste your money. Worst Halo ever. Now I can sell my XB one with a free conscience, and focus my gaming entirely on PC. Good riddance. Expand

The VERY low reviews I don't understand. I'd say this game is easily a 75-85 point game depending on where you fall. It does have some weirdness to it, but you have to stay with the Halo style gameplay to at least some extent. Though, the vehicles DO feel far too "floaty", worse than previous ones.

The multiplayer modes are fun and a blast to play, haven't had a single hiccup with online play. With a wide range of fun maps and game modes, one could easily spend a lot of time with Halo 5. 343i have done a fantastic job and I hope the next Halo game succeeds just as well as Halo 5.

It feels like Halo 5 is trying to be like Call of Duty and other high paced first person shooters of the modern era. From making enemies kill you in a few shots to cover based shooting it no longer feels like it belongs in the Halo franchise. AI teamates fail to preform even the most basic of functions oftentimes acting more like cannon fodder than actual allies. This becomes even more agitating during the Warden fights making you have to exploit the game (unless you play flawlessly) in order to get by him. There are also numerous scenes where music suddenly stops and dialogues overlap to the point where you can't make out what the characters are saying.

The multiplayer introduces micro transactions and a card based play system for warzone creating massively lopsided matches, multiple tanks can easily be spawned for the enemy team while you have little to no access to counters (plasma pistol needs to be requisitioned in and cost 2 req points which build up slowly). In addition to this the amount of HP you have is reduced so low that even the magnum will take out any player in a few shots (think of it like the DMR from Reach). Another annoying aspect to warzone is that req builds up based on kills (the rich get richer) almost always resulting in a no comeback game.

Cutscenes throughout are action packed and well placed, looking fantastic in 1080p 60fps.The characters should be familiar to people with knowledge of the extended universe, and introduces some really well thought out enemies. The Promethean Knights now take on a more Mgalekgolo (Hunter) type role, capable of absorbing a Scorpion shot, unless you hit their weak spots, giving variety to the gameplay. The host of enemies included vary the pace of combat, with subclasses of all enemies in the game. Squad commands allow you to mix up the way you fight ; Lone wolf, Team player, balanced etc, the revive system encouraging the use of these all new abilities.
Fluidity is maintained perfectly, due to the sacrifice of split screen, however it would have been nice to include split screen. Textures do seem to lag occasionally.

Multiplayer is a blast, Warzone and its REQ system allowing for a more open ended, casual style of play, whilst keeping shrewd decision making essential. Team play works brilliantly as the bosses demand focused fire and attention to beat, and the objectives requiring more thought to bring down. Yet again gameplay is fluid as ever! Occasionally the opening cutscenes for the match will glitch, showing an outside view of the map and the spawning rarely places you in the middle of gunfights, but this is very rare. Some may feel forced to use REQs. REQs deliver a variety of weapons, scopes, vehicles and power ups, adding another dimension of thought to gameplay, and the Spartan abilities fuse flawlessly with core Halo mechanics.

Arena is fast paced, balanced mode with the 1-50 ranking system making a triumphant re-emergence , making almost every game tense and satisfying, regardless of the outcome; victories are often hard fought and narrow, with a virtual playground of opportunities to outwit and defeat your foe. The new abilities work fantastically; thrusters make more escapes and gunfight victories possible, Ground Pound deals massive ranged melee damage and Spartan Charge stuns and damages your enemy. Map design is up to scratch and power weapons can be game changers in THE RIGHT HANDS; they aren't outrageously overpowered, but can subdue the opposition massively. I didn't really notice any problems at all.

The menu layout is simple and intuitive, but could use a more expansive roster in matchmaking.

Finally, the music is good, with some aspects of the original Halo style, however it is nothing to behold.

This game is fantastic, a must buy for everyone, especially die hard Halo fans; it feels like Halo should.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'll start with this: I'm a huge Halo fan. I've been playing since Halo: Combat Evolved back in 2001.
That being said, I'm going to break my review down into categories:

CAMPAIGN: I think this campaign deserves a commendation as the worst in the entire series - which is saying a lot 343, because Bungie sucks at story-telling - #Destiny. Halo 5's marketing campaign advertised this game with a pretense that Locke and Chief would be in a feud the entire game while Chief finds a way to save Cortana, leading up to some kind of final showdown...

    ...But that never actually happens.

Instead, Chief and Locke have only a brief 60-second fist fight, and Cortana becomes the main antagonist. I suppose we have to give 343 some effort on the plot twist. However, the story is a chaotic and confusing mess, leaving much to be desired and even more unexplained - unless maybe you are familiar with the novels. Locke is a monotone military dog, making him forgettable and unrelatable (I wish there was a bit more back story to him) and his "fireteam" doesn't add much to that equation. On top of this, we only get to play as Chief 3/15 missions, the fewest times in the series (referencing Halo 2, mostly). And where/when the hell did John 117 reunite with his long lost "Blue Team?" Are we just supposed to assume that while he was out saving the world/universe the past few years that they were simply on vacation? The story ignores this major question among many others.

The Halo series has very little to do now with the Halo rings, and more to do now with the Forerunners and their influence in the galaxy. I playfully suggest that the series should be renamed "Forerunner" - or something of that nature - before we hit a Halo 9, or some ridiculous number, and are continuously being let down because these games fail to live up to their predecessors. Many AAA titles are suffering that fate already. But at least this campaign ended with a cliffhanger, leaving 343 an opportunity to do better next time around. Also, come on, Halo is known for its stellar multiplayer, not its campaign. So let's move on.

    Final Score: 4/10

GRAPHICS: Players running in the distance (in multiplayer) look like 2-D characters from the SNES era. Backgrounds and environments just seem stale and not very immersive. Seems like 343 had to sacrifice a lot of detail to keep the game running at 60 frames-per-second. However, the CGI cutscenes are totally stunning. Nicely done.

    Final Score: 8/10

SOUNDS: I feel 343 tried too hard to make the game sound futuristic when they should have kept it simple and memorable. #classicbattlerifle

    Final Score: 7/10

MUSIC: Wait, there was music? Bring Back Martin O'Donnell!

    Final Score: 6/10

MULTIPLAYER: First of all, I view gameplay and multiplayer as two sides to the same coin. 343 had said numerous times that making this game a great multiplayer experience was the #1 goal when building the game, and that meant getting down to the mechanics and gameplay. They wanted to bring Halo back to its roots while still making it progressive in gameplay, and they did this without flaw. They did away (mostly) with armor abilites, which just brought unneeded variables and imbalance to the games. They did away with reticle bloom, which frustrated most players. Weapon swapping is now nearly instantaneous. They kept sprint, added ledge grabbing, and added thrusting for engaging/disengaging in combat - all of which add speed and flow to Halo's already iconic gameplay. 60 frames-per-second is where it's at for shooters now, and it makes Halo feel like a totally different experience as a shooter. There are more symmetrical maps, which is a necessity for balance and fair competitive play for the hardcore player. Not to mention: this is by far the best game in the series in terms of weapon balance. Literally any weapon is viable at most ranges and engagements. There is not really a clear superior weapon in the game, which is an incredibly hard thing to accomplish in a FPS. Shooters need less variables and more balance to be great. Not the opposite. Also, Warzone is just ridiculous, chaotic, wicked fun. A blast every time.

HOWEVER: I must say that the controls are clunky to me and a little sloppy for a Halo game. Perhaps because I've been playing too much Destiny? - which has stellar mechanics. Anyway, it takes some getting used to. A steady connection helps vastly, which is much easier now because of dedicated servers. Overall, the multiplayer is a huge improvement from Halo 4, and I would say that it is about on par with Halo 3 in terms of gameplay quality and multiplayer experience.

    Final Score: 9/10

How I rank the Halo titles (in terms in multiplayer):

    1. Halo 2 / H2A
    2. Halo 3 / Halo 5:Guardians
    3. Halo: CE(A)
    4. Halo: Reach
    5. Halo 4

    Not counting "Halo: ODST"

Overall, I give Halo 5: Guardians a 8/10. I put most of the weight from my rating into the multiplayer alone, making this game a definite buy for any Xbox One owner.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. "Oh John!" ....... "Cortana?" Some fighting. "Cortana, is that you?" ....... "John". And more fighting and battling. "Cortana, where are you?" ....... "Johhhhn!" And more fighting. Around this point in the game I couldn't help but laugh a little and wonder to myself just how much more convoluted and lacking creativity and inspiration could this series get in its story telling and lore. I mean is this it? The further adventures of an augmented modified hero and his love affair with a neurotic self-aware transcendant turned goddess computer program? 343 is, or has backed itself into a 'virtual' story telling corner. There are certainly interesting 'elements' in the story fabric, but it is not knitted together well. And while the fighting and production value ramp up the heat, the story does not or is it lore I would tell sitting around any campfire. Being an artist/painter I am amazed at what is being done graphically digitally in gaming and this developer has designed an attractive illusion. It was fun to look around in some of the environments, explore a little. Actually, one of the more touching moments in the game was during one of the none fighting missions later in this 'saga'. You are in an encampment with Dr. Halsey, the Arbiter, your team, and numerous elites, grunts, and a few humans gathering and sharing intel and plans for the next operation/mission. Just walking around and listening in as the grunts and elites banter was fun. The music is very good, so much so that at times I felt it overpowered everything else going on in the game. Beethoven experienced this when composing his overtures and oratorios. His musical efforts became stand alone pieces. I completed the campaign in roughly 10 hrs. in normal mode (a bit of looking around for skulls, data caches, and environmental vistas and detail), 1400 kills, and a few deaths caused by falling off some of those beautiful vistas, being pushed off in one instance by team members, and killed by enemies. At times I felt as though I was playing alone due to the 'behaviors' of my team members. Most notably during combat. Sometimes they would just stand around doing nothing behind an obstruction or even out in the open during the heat of action. And of course the enemies would zero in on me primarily. I can't really grade the multiplayer, although I tried to play it. Don't care for micro transactions utilized in competitive modes in any game where it gives advantages other than skill. I enjoy playing Halos' multiplayer modes when it is with known friends only (there continues to remain for me an absurdity in these times that people attempt to destroy each other in the virtual world globally in a game and they don't have any knowledge of who those others may be, and for what?). I played this game in two 5 hr. sessions. A kind of mini-marathon. I have no interest in playng it again. When the next installment arrives, I will probibly play it. But I will be reticent based on what I have experienced with this 'episode'. The story, like the production values, needs to evolve. The writers, like their 'Arbiter', need to have a little grit, courage, risk, and exercise some creativity and not pander to the previous successes, expectations, and influences. How about a story ''arrived at' rather than one 'expected'. There is plenty of nerdy goodness in this fifth episode but little Shakespeare. There could have been some real pathos, but it is only hinted at. Expand

A huge step up from Halo 4 in both campaign and multiplayer. Graphics look surprisingly good for a Xbox One game.

The campaign definitely has something for people who follow the lore.
Multiplayer is more balanced than before. Dedicated servers are freaking awesome

Worst Halo game for its time.

The aiming is buggy and sensitivity is like no FPS of recent years.

The colors are far too bright.

The armor is glossy and far from real.

The Ai is trash compared to lets say... Destiny.

The story blows compared to all other Halo games.

The only positive thing I'll say is that the PVP is somewhat balanced.

    'Next-Gen' at its finest.
Having played and completed every Halo up until now I can honestly say this one is right up there with the best. Not just Halo's, but games in general. Absolutely every element of this game is polished to perfection. The graphics, the audio, and even the loading times are simply fantastic.

I personally hadn't listened to any of the "Hunt the Truth" clips, nor did I play all of the Spartan Ops in Halo 4, though it didn't take me long to find my feet in the narrative. Admittedly, you spend more of the time playing as Locke than Chief, though this in no way detracts from what is a genuine Halo experience. Moreso than 4, I thought. Having a team of 4 at any given time does not feel cheap (despite this being a genuine concern for me after watching early gameplay footage) as there is many a time you will permanently die. It's a delicate balance, and 343 have gotten it just right.
The campaign could possibly have done to be a little longer (I clocked 8-9 hours on my Heroic difficulty playthrough), though every mission is jam-packed with content, and there is much replayability by way of collectables, and increased difficulty levels for you purists or achievement hunters out there. I for one am NOT looking forward to Legendary difficulty.. it's damn tough on Heroic!
    5 stars, yo!

While Halo 5’s campaign may suffer from being a lackluster bridge installment of the Reclaimer saga, the chaotic multiplayer and new Warzone gametype is enough to warrant a purchase if you’re a fan of the series or multiplayer in general. Otherwise, it’s much easier to recommend waiting for a sale or pick up a used copy, when the additional multiplayer content has been patched in.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Coming from Halo 4, this game is a definite step down. Whereas Halo 4 expanded the universe and developed Chief and Cortana on a much more intimate level, this game felt rushed. The split between Lock and Chief resulted in me not feeling attached to either character. By adding Chief's team, I feel like there was less focus on any character at all. The plot progression was minimal. Basically, Lock chases Chief, Chief runs away a few times, and Cortana's doing something completely out of character. Just when the story is about to get interesting, it ends. Overall, if you're looking for a quality game with a good story, look somewhere else.

Despite a completely disappointing campaign, the game-play was reasonably good. It didn't add anything new, but otherwise it was acceptable. I haven't played Multi-player, because I don't care enough about it to pay for a subscription each month.

Lets make the aiming wonky because real pros will learn how to use the wonky aiming, lets make the pistol as powerful as a dmr so i kill people in 4 shots with a start weapon, lets reduce the radar by half so i can sprint at you from behind and assassinate you without you realizing i'm there. launching the game with 3 whole maps was also stupid.

Most levels if not all seem "grindy" and just filler content to get you to the next cutscene! It almost has a feel of it's the same level just with a different surrounding and sometimes a different skin on the enemies. I would even choose the gameplay of Reach over this as it stands which is saying something!

Anyways here are my thoughts. This is Halo done right for the consumer. The multiplayer which is what will keep you coming back is great. Best the balance has ever been. Sure the lack of splitscreen is a bummer but it actually improves the quality of the games. Only 1 player of the 3 in a splitscreen would play relatively well as they had the bigger screen. This made games unbalanced and annoyed me when I'd get teamed with parties. Now it upsets me that I can't play with my wife for campaign but it's something I got over quickly as I noticed how great the game feels and looks having sacrificed the couch coop feature.

While I don't like the req system as well as I enjoyed halo:Reach's unlock system it definetely makes the game more enjoyable with the promise of free content, an issue that past halos suffered from with population splitting.

I love Angry Joe but he is misinformed with a lot of his issues with the game. This games great and only will get better. Shame that the company stuffed the story with weak characters at least the overall plot is great. One last tip, try to ignore Microsofts PR **** trailers, they lie to you.

Boring... It reminds me a lot of how 343 hyped Spartan Ops and it ended up falling flat... Yeah that's Warzone. I much rather have Big Team Battle. That was at least fun. Single player is cookie cutter storyline and you okay 80+% as Spartan Locke's team... AI is pretty dumb too.

    Detailed.
Multiplayer. I would have to say with any Halo game I spend most of my playtime on multiplayer. I am always happy to see not only competitive modes, but also fun modes like Griffball or infection. This game just has your standard multiplayer options with an additional mode new to the series called Breakout. It's kind of fun, you have a team of 5 each with one life. As for the other modes they all fall flat since it is just a few of 343 maps which each one lack creativity. They don't even bring back any of the fan favorite maps like what other Halo games have done. It makes even a fun mode like Breakout get old FAST since you're only playing on 3 very similar maps. They don't really even have any landmarks that help you identify position.

WarZone. A cool idea but really slow and really boring. You capture points, kill 'bosses' that are so far off the battle path it just seems like getting to them takes longer than actually killing them. My biggest complaint with this mode is that when you buy REQ pack 90% of the packs are items belonging to this mode. Granted, you can sell them to earn REQ points back but it's still annoying to get something worth 10,000Req to only get 3,000 back.

Typical 343 thinking lack of ammo means challenge basically forcing you into picking up weapons you really don't like because they put more than 3 minutes into coding them. Enemies however do die faster than they did in Halo 4 but the story is sooooooo boring.

Customization. About the same level as it was in Halo 3 except less customization on Emblems and includes micro transactions that give you random pieces you may not want and won't be able to sell...

For a Halo game this is disappointing. For a game in general it's OK

Most of the negative reviews havn't played the game. "Flow" is the word that comes to mind when playing Halo 5. Favoring curves over sharp lines, you are guided through each multiplayer map with a cat and mouse type feel. This calls for top notch teamwork to cut off your opponents. The maps are vivid but not hard on the eyes like Halo 4. One of the better Halo games. Buy it!

I'm gonna keep this short and simple
    Pros
    - gameplay
    - graphics
    - multiplayer
    - soundtrack

    Cons
    - story

The game lacks depth in story especially if you are new to this series. Though missions with chief felt like good old days but locke its just weird. This could have been a master piece if they told the story properly but nonetheless this will keep you busy till next halo comes out

I take back anything remotely pleasant I had to say. This game is totally broken for EU players, 6 months out. It's MCC all over again.

Don't buy anything with 343i on it. It's a shame that Creative Assembly (who've lately been recognised for Alien Isolation) are getting into bed with them.

I hate the direction where games are going about making everything about the multiplayer and totally neglecting the campaign. I played the campaign in Heroic, and it is quite challenging. The AI works really good and the enemies try to get cover, shoot and throw grenades to kill you and your team. With other 2 friends we had to try several times to successfully complete some levels. The history itself, with the two spartans groups, feels very solid and interesting, like if you were reading a Halo novel.

Arena mode is very fun. I have to say that it has no lag at all playing from Spain. It should receive more game modes as usual, but for now you have the very classic ones: slayer, team deathmatch, swat, capture the flag, free for all. It is important to mention that all DLC will come for free, so that is a good point for 343i

The new game mechanics and control feel also very fresh and well. You are able to control the Spartan like in the Cinematic intro of the game: jumping everywhere, punching the ground, breaking barriers using a spartan charge, jump and turn around while in the air thanks to the jetpack ... You can make very interesting moves, that make you play faster, avoid better the shoots.

Graphics are awesome too, some low detailed textures noticed, but in rare situations. The lighting is great, the scene density is high and the enemies are very detailed.

Sound is really really good. It has been an epic win over the Halo 4 OST, which was simply good.

I think I will play many many hours to this game, re-playing the campaign mode using skulls and maybe in legendary, and playing much more to the multiplayer mode.

How could you give a 0 to this game? The real issue I see with this game are the graphics, but that's the compromise for having a rock solid 60fps for campaign and multiplayer. The gameplay is the best of the entire saga, very very enjoyable. Campaign feels short but it is in average for the FPS genre. Soundtrack is perfect. It's an aberration that people gives it a 0, please grow up.

343 continues to expand upon the classic Halo formula in order to leave their mark on the series. While not quite the huge evolution for the series it was touted, there is enough new here to keep the Halo series relevant after all these years.

From a technical standpoint the game is very impressive. It's not the best looking game on Xbox One, but everything runs exactly like it should and the campaign still looks pretty darn great with plenty of detail in the world. The graphics do take a hit in the transition to multiplayer, but you'll be too busy playing to really care about the blander environments. I've encountered no connectivity issues and there is no lag to be seen. This is a buttery smooth FPS in every aspect.

The controls are just are tighter than ever. There's no more clicking a thumb-stick to bring up a score. Zoom in functions have been mapped to the left trigger, moving grenades to the right shoulder button. It takes a little bit of getting used to for the classic Halo fans, but it doesn't take long to click at all. When it does the gameplay has never felt more intuitive.

The campaign is much larger in level design in order to compensate for the expanded emphasis on four-player co-op. A feature only slightly tarnished due to the non-inclusion of split-screen. The design allows you to approach situations in any way you see fit. Plenty of secret passages and hidden power weapons can be found that allow you to get ahead of the enemies. For the first time in the series I was giving genuine thought to my position on the battlefield, and the benefits of taking the higher or lower ground. These are some of the best level layouts in the series in my opinion.

The increase in size also allows for bigger battles comprised of multiple enemy types appearing onscreen at once. The fights feel massive as you overtake enemies coming in from numerous locations at once. The "Promethean" finally feel distinct enough to feel legitimately different from the Covenant. Another cool thing about the campaign is that almost every weapon feels like a viable option on the battlefield. The series has always had some weapons that just felt useless. That is rarely the case here.

All of these elements come together to form a campaign with impressive scale that will provide moments of genuine and exciting cooperative and solo strategy. From a gameplay standpoint the game nails it and this might be my new favorite Halo campaign. It also marks the return to form for Halo storytelling. The 3rd and 4th Halo had stories that just made no sense and dove into complete and utter sci-fi nonsense that made no sense and wasn't really explained. Halo 5's story is much more comprehensible. It's the first time I've been able to understand and follow a story in the main series since Halo 2. It even has some of the emotional core that made up Halo 4. The only downside is the ending. There's not a real sense of conclusion to the events the story. Obviously I was expecting it to still keep things open for the sequel, but I wasn't expecting the game to just end abruptly like it did.

Multiplayer is just as addictive as ever. However some of the changes to the formula are kind of controversial and will rub some the wrong way. The new Warzone mode makes use of what the game calls "Requisition Packs." These packs give you cards that allow you to bring in things like more powerful weapons and vehicles in the middle of a match by the means of a recharging energy-like system. In order to get these packs you have to either collect in-game currency by playing matches or buy them with real money through microtransactions. The microtransactions are completely ignorable and don't make this a pay to win experience. However it is still irritating to see the game's biggest new mode tied to this system.

It does little to diminish the enjoyment the mode can bring though. Warzone's big battles feature multiple objectives that pop up over the course of the match. Capturing bases, defeating A.I. bosses, and of course killing enemies all give your team points. First team to reach the limit wins. However if your team manages to capture all of the bases and expose the enemies core in their home base, then you can destroy it and pull of an instant win. The great thing about this mode is that no matter how you choose to participate, be it stealing bases or just popping other players, you are contributing to the overall goal of your team.

"Arena" just offers a way for players to jump into some of the series' traditional modes. "Team Arena" allows players to jump into a playlist with constantly changing modes and maps.

With incredibly addicting multiplayer, a strong campaign, and excellent gameplay the series makes a strong first main entry on Xbox One. Some disappointments are noticeable and some changes lackluster, but this is still a must play for longtime fans and newcomers alike. Even in an overcrowded sea of FPS games Halo still manages to stand out.

Bad: Rare to non-existent UNSC weapons and ammo in story mode, the story is not complete in itself and has quite a bit of padding. Multiplayer suffers due to insane sniping ranges, unavoidable sniper alleys and no way to know there is a sniper at all. Way too easy to kill and be killed. PvE elements seem like an afterthought and aren't very persistent. Spawn-camping is very easy to set up and maintain. REQ system makes little sense and leaves you vulnerable.
Verdict: While I enjoyed myself a great deal, I prefer Destiny's crucible when it comes to multiplayer, which is pretty much the main reason anyone plays any halo game longer than a few weeks. Weak replay value except for completionists and hardcore fans of the series, and still no solo content outside of the campaign. While much better than 4 and the whole of the CoD franchise, it still loses to Reach and ODST within it's own.

The multiplayer is a mixed bag for me thus far. When I'm matched with players around my level, it's great. Sadly, much of the time I'm matched against players far better than myself (even after my first 10 placement matches), which makes for a frustrating experience. Facing off against platinum players with 200+ games under their belt when I've got 12 games under my belt and I'm a silver/borderline gold player is frustrating. Hopefully this will improve as I learn the maps and more players finish the campaign and begin entering multiplayer.

Warzone is fun, but the requisition packs are frustrating. A player that spends money on these packs can gain an advantage over one that doesn't. That should NEVER happen in any pvp game, and I frankly expected better from 343 after how much I enjoyed Halo 4 multiplayer. In addition, the requisition packs are a little confusing. Some seem to get used up after one use, while others stick around no matter how often they're used. There also isn't any way to tell if it's worth keeping duplicates of a card, or if it's better to sell them for REQ points. Does keeping multiple cards give me any benefit? Sadly, there is no way of knowing. It seems microtransactions are going to be a fact of life for gamers going forward, even when we're shelling out $60+ for a game. If Star Wars Battlefront or Call of Duty Black Ops III can offer better multiplayer without microtransactions, there won't be anything holding me to Halo 5 when they're released.

Halo's recent history is curious to me. The series' greatness is undoubtable, but with both 4 and 5 I start seeing stretch marks and cracks in strange places that have little to do with the Halo series.

Things start with the gameplay, which is by no stretch of the imagination bad. While out of place in the franchise, the smart link/iron sight aiming fits fairly well while the booster adds an extra level of useful speed to make fights more intense, but many of Halo's unique weapons have been cast aside and replaced with forgettable alternatives (I rather miss the Brute weapons and vehicles).

The plot's a bit of a disappointment as well, despite quite a lot of potential. It assumes you're up to date on the vast majority of Halo lore which isn't necessarily bad but doesn't help anything, it certainly raised more questions for me as I've only read a handful of the books (such as how Blue Team's there). On the whole though, plot and characters are handled badly, shying away from interesting moments that could use exploring. Blue Team aren't exactly complicated, but they're far less interesting here and even Buck and the Arbiter have stepped away from what made them awesome. I've no issue with playing as Locke (and I find the people who complain about it to be rather foolish), but he's not offering much of an alternative view point on the world, he's just another numpty blundering through the game's events.

Still, the game plays well and has good multiplayer. The lack of Forge at launch is annoying but I'm looking forwards to getting my hands on it. The aesthetic (ie look) of the game isn't quite as appealing as previous entries somehow and there's bizarre pop ins/textures changing at times to keep the game at a smooth frame rate, which is at least appreciated but doesn't help it's overall presentation.

Overall, it's a solid game that's well worth looking into. Just don't expect it to be the next coming or to remember much of it by January.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. All right lets start with the story, yes it is a bit short, but it is very well done, action everywhere and an incredible story, but there are some flaws as well with the story, you see I a huge lore geek and Halo is no exception, most of what happens in the campaign wasn't new to me at all. Most of what I thought would happen did indeed happen, with the exception of one thing.

This drives a wedge between people that know the lore and people that don't most people that don't claim to see an incoherent story, most people that do can fill in the gaps of the story because they no what happened outside of the games.

The balance between Blue Team and Team Osiris is a bit off, I figured that would annoy me, but it didn't, Team Osiris carries it's own weight pretty well and Spartan Locke is one of the best characters I have seen in Halo, mostly because he isn't some gruff super soldier, but because he is respectful, friendly, clear minded and a great natural leader. Nathan Fillion fills the role of Buck from ODST, and he delivers some of the best voice acting I have seen in ages.

But back to the missions itself, Like I said the balance between teams in terms of missions is off here, while Osiris has more missions most of them are a lot shorter and while Blue team has less missions, most of them are a lot longer.

The balance could have been better and with the way the story went, it sometimes feels as if Osiris was put in there as a plot device. The missions itself is what you expect from Halo, so no new things there with the exception of a mission or two which were incredible.

The Multiplayer has changed a lot, Halo 5 goes arena all the way, movement is key and with the new abilities I feel like a Spartan, the game is incredible fast paced and the controls are very smooth.

Warzone brings a mode I have been hoping for since I started playing the games, all out warfare with AI mixed in, there are some flaws in my opinion, for instance AI's aren't spawned at random but always arrive in the same order and after the warden eternal no more enemies spawn.

Random AI enemy spawns would make it better in my opinion and having some AI on the map at all time next to the marines would make it more warfare like. There is a lot of potential here, I can definitely see some more type of enemies and a map based around the flood with those things crawling everywhere could be an incredible experience.

My conclusion is simple, if you are a Halo fan and liked the previous games with a mix of new game play elements thrown in and like a new type of Halo multiplayer, get this game.

If you rather like the old games without any changes or any new stuff stay away, buy the Masterchief Collection.

Halo 5 feels like a fresh new entry in the series and takes what is good from the old games and places them in a new package, being a Spartan never felt this good.

    ▪ Important things have to be shown in cutscenes and not told from characters as exposition (flashbacks and flashforwards do exist you know! How the hell did Cortana turn evil?)
    ▪ In general: characters who have conflicts in the story have to get a juicy background to ensure fights deliver struggle.
    ▪ All the characters: not enough interaction through each other. The dialogue is pretty bad: most of it was just useless banter and rarely did any character say anything of actual importance that gave us an insight into their character. These characters are irrelevant to the story: Vale, Tanaka, Buck (although he adds fun lines), Fred, Linda, Kelly, the Arbiter (he's there to get Sanghelios free from the Covenant, but that doesn't have anything to do with the story ), the Covenant (what are they up to in the first mission? - they're on their last stronghold on Sunaion just to justify the Arbiter presence in the game), Prometheans and Warden (they're there just to be shot, they spawn a little time before a Guardian awakens and start killing people), Meridian people (I can't see why I should care about them), Lasky+Palmer are there just because the Infinity is the Osiris ship.
    ▪ Blue Team (Fred, Kelly and Linda): Characters have to be introduced IN THE GAME, I just played another Halo chronological marathon to try understand Halo 5 only with the information held in the games - because playing the games without reading the expanded material is what most of the fans do - but it is actually impossible. I know who they are and I love them because I read "Fall of Reach" but a fan who didn't read it doesn't know anything about their awesomeness and will never love them as me!
    ▪ Vale and Tanaka: you need to show more of them, why did they decide to become spartans? What are their motivations? We just know Vale knows a lot about Elites and Tanaka is a technician, nothing more.
    ▪ Jul'mdama: What was he doing in the 1st mission? What should players know about him if they didn'play Spartan Ops? what about the Janus Key?
    ▪ Locke: he's been introduced in "Nightfall" (I saw it), he had to be introduced in the game, and his fighting and stealth skills too! In Nightfall we can see he is an ONI agent who is sent in the most dangerous missions but in Halo 5 he looks empty, he rarely talks to the other characters (as almost every character) so you can't learn anything about him or his relationship with the other characters, and in every fight Osiris just runs into enemies! Is that really how a stealth ONI assassin would lead his Spartan team? How are we supposed to get connected with him that way? The only characters who work well if they almost never speak are the Rookie and Noble 6 because you don't see their face, so you "Imagine to be them", so whereas Locke is intended to be a character with huge background he's not a good character if his motivations and abilities are not shown in the game.
    ▪ Guardians: we know from Cortana's exposition that the Guardians are very powerful Forerunner constructs that were used by them to rule the galaxy, but we never see their power! The game is called "Halo 5: Guardians" and we see just one of them EMPing a planet at the end of the game, nothing more...
    ▪ The Warden Eternal: as the Guardians there is not enough shown of his story, we know from what he says that he's the protector of the Domain, and he serves Cortana because she's now in control of it. How did Cortana and the Warden meet? What is the Warden story during the Forerunner era? Did he know the Didact?

    ▪ The Arbiter: everything about him changed (in my language that is italian they also had to change his dubber because the previous one died... but the new one doesn't resemble him in any way… the only good thing is the armor because it hides his wrong jaws. Then is behaviour is also a lot more aggressive than Halo 2/3 and he screams a lot!
    ▪ Halsey: did she want revenge against UNSC and ONI or am I wrong?
    ▪ Lasky and Palmer: they are Captain and Commander, but they actually don't command anyone... and there is not much of them that helps the player caring about them
    ▪ Roland: he's actually in the story because of what?
    ▪ Exuberant: only good new character, she serves the "Guardians builders" (I don't know their name in english, in italian they are "i Costruttori") and her installation is Genesis, that is the planet where Guardians are built. It is enough for her because she isn't in conflict with anyone in the story.
    ▪ Buck: he's ok, but he has no influence in the story.
    ▪ Chief: after Halo 4 I though we would see more emotions from him... he turned from a static to a dynamic character in Halo 4, and in Halo 5 he just "goes awhole" and tries to take her home.
    ▪ Cortana: Died at the end of H4 and she just reappeared OP and wants to rule the universe. WTF happened?

This game is a masterpiece! As a Halo fan for years I absolutely think this game is a perfect installment in the evolution of the series. I waited a while to review this game because I wanted to see whether it holds its entertainment value and surprisingly it not only maintains it but increases it.

The campaign mode is fun and the story isn't as good as Halo 2 but just as good as Halo 3

I waited a while to review this game because I wanted to see whether it holds its entertainment value and surprisingly it not only maintains it but increases it.

The campaign mode is fun and the story isn't as good as Halo 2 but just as good as Halo 3 and superior to Halo 4. They are going in a different direction and it does take some getting use to for the different POV the story takes on. The story does maintain interest and has a descent ending. I give the story an 8/10.

The multiplayer is absolutely amazing and is the only thing that keeps me logging in a couple hours a day. They aren't having any of the matchmaking issues that the Master Chief collection had. The upgrade system is just perfect and easy to understand unlike the abomination they're running in Black Ops 3. I give the Multiplayer 10/10.

The only thing this game is missing is Forge mode which I expect for them to include in an upcoming update. That's the only reason this game doesn't get 10/10.

All things accounted for, this game gets a 9/10.

P.S. don't waste your money on Call of Duty BO3!

Not the best game in Halo Franchise. But the story is great for the second part of a trilogy and the multiplayer is fun as always. The new REQ System works perfectly and brings a lot of variety in the game.

My Boyfriend and I are BIG Halo fans and when we noticed that the story wasn't co-op for the same console we were very disappointed. Playing together was a tradition plus the NPC's that where on your team where horrible, you tell them to shoot a target and they end up just walking around while you get shot at.

The story line was WAY TO SHORT AND MISLEADING!! Please tell me how you can

The story line was WAY TO SHORT AND MISLEADING!! Please tell me how you can have a trailer about Locke and Chief going against each other, and yet its not even really like that. Threw me way off. The ending was horrible, (reminded me of the ending in mass effect 3 BUT mass effect 3 was wayyy better) We came up with a better story for the 5th Halo form our hypothesis based off the trailer.

Hey Microsoft if you are looking for some help on a better story/ending hit me up I got you.

This game is alright, and if you have an Xbox One it is worth grabbing. 343 is improving the game each month but it's still lacking in a lot of ways. Most maps are very similar, only after 3 patches/updates are there a good number of diverse maps, and while warzone is fun, but it quickly devolves into wanting to spend money on req packs to get the items you want to be able to spawn in. Most maps are very similar, only after 3 patches/updates are there a good number of diverse maps, and while warzone is fun, but it quickly devolves into wanting to spend money on req packs to get the items you want to be able to spawn in. I have 4 days of play time across arena and warzone. This game is fun but its rough around the edges. The number of gamemodes, particularly social playlists are lacking, still no oddball!

This game will most likely improve as time goes on, but it's a just above average Halo, nowhere near the level of Halo 2, 3 or Reach in my opinion. Hopefully 343 buckles down and continues to provide updates for this game because as it stands, it is a 60 dollar experience, but the req packs will leave you needing to spend a lot more if you aren't intending on playing tons to unlock them normally. However, it's a catch 22 because if you're playing a lot, particularly warzone, you will want more req packs.

The req pack system isn't awful, but it's clearly designed in a way to get you to spend a **** load of money to get the stuff you want, and as somebody who has been playing halo since the first one, it is an unwelcome change.

Final Thoughts: If you own an xbox one, grab it it is a solid game. If you bought an xbox one for it like I did, reconsider unless you know you have multiple friends who plan to do the same. Teammates will make or break your experience.

343i releases, yet again, a completely disappointing product, proving that they are not worth handling the Halo franchise. After three years of hype, Halo 5 has become nothing but a disappointment. Having been very excited for every new entry in the past, I now find myself wondering if I'll even buy Halo 6. This is the third disappointing product that the company has released, and unless things start to look better for Halo 6, the fall of the Halo franchise is clear. R.I.P. my beloved franchise.

The story was simply made for Hardcore halo fans and the entire game is extremely fun. If im having this much fun and forge isnt even out yet. I cant wait to see how much fun i have on Forge.

All the reviews about this game are very mixed. But the population and fan base to Halo is very different to other fan bases fro other FPS games. All i can say is that you will have allot of fun

Lets see here... It builds off the gameplay of Reach, instead of Halo 1-3, effectively making it a Call of Duty game, NOT a halo game. Love halo? Stick to the original trilogy and ODST. Anything from Reach and onwards should just be avoided at all costs. Make halo HALO again. Enough of this CoD nonsense.

Halo 5: Guardians is okay. Its campaign is rubbish, but the multiplayer is solid thanks to the foundation it’s built upon. Warzone is a really enjoyable experience, and while combat is still mostly about tossing grenades and hitting the melee button, the whole Requisition gimmick adds some much-needed flavor to proceedings.

The latest Halo is a big deal only for hardcore Halo fans. For me the single player campaign was unbearably pompous and despite 1080p and 60 fps the visuals are not as breathtaking as they once were in Halo 4. The game builds a solid foundation for Halo 6, but it’s not one of those games you absolutely have to play. [13/2015, p.48]

With a more accessible and engaging story and solid new designs for the Prometheans, Halo 5 is a major improvement over Halo 4. Warzone is a great addition to the multiplayer, though the mode seems to have some game balance issues. [Nov 2015]
