The story line felt shorter than most other titles but there were significantly more cut scenes and dialog. The story line was in depth and better explained as you went along each mission unlike in some previous titles. The campaign felt as if it had plenty replay ability in which every play through afterwords would unlock new mysteries or places I had not previously noticed or explored. I did not find that the story line felt hopeless or as if humanity were on the edge of annihilation like previous titles. This was a disappointment to me because I felt the hopelessness and the will to fight to the end nomatter what the cost gave halo a unique twist on the series. I was disappointed with how blue teams relationships and story line was handled because it felt very lackluster if not non-existent. Chief also lacked a bunch of screen time in favor of Locke who is kind of an unlikable character. The multiplayer is fun but is unbalanced at times , especially in war zone. The Campaign and multiplayer are two of the last decent ones in the Xbox FPS universe and I look forward to the next title. All in all , it is a great game that some will love and others may not care much for. It is not a halo game like in the past and is something new, so make sure when you play that you don't treat it like a previous title. Expand

its just not Halo anymore. 343 have ruined this once great game.
    The guns feel wrong.
    The AI terrible
    Story is stupid.
Campaign is short and lacks the epic feel of the others.
    Multiplayer modes are dull(even warzone)
Thanks 343 for taking my favourite game and doing a massive turd on it.

Multiplayer is also awful, all games are rated and your rating goes up based on games won, so if you play with good friends and later play on your own you're massively out of your depth. 4v4 means that games are very skewed and if someone leaves you're **** No idea why 343i chose to do 4v4 instead of the traditional 6v6. Maps are tiny and all the same, in fact its easy on spawn to be confused about where you are. Power weapons pretty much give the other team free kills until the next power weapon.

Warzone is the only half decent thing about this game, that and the music, so 1pt for those.

It is garbage. The best it can do is some multi player, but the rest is not worth the money. If it was free to play, that is another thing, however it is not. The full price you expect a lot more campaign, split screen, and a great story line. Well, the campaign is painful. It is plain garbage, the rest I could not give a **** about.

Best Halo in years. It runs better than any MP game I have ever played. All the idiots giving this game a zero just show themselves to be utter morons. While I don't think its a 10 I would give it a 9,5, I will give it a 10 to offset all the Sony Fantards who are giving it zero.

Halo really managed to surprise once again bringing a wonderful plot to participate in allowing go to paths that I even imagined, risking his old and established characters and taking them to shady paths all this for us, as something that is reduntante but with an excellent multiplayer, which is quite fast, and aided by 60 FPS.

I've even spawned right in the reticle of an opposing team member with a sniper rifle, I kid you not. The developers decided that the default weapon would be the assault rifle (which you can't change), a pretty useless gun. Plus, I don't understand how a grenade can go off right under the feet of someone that's one shot and it not kill them. Of course I've been killed by rockets that hit the wall 15 yards away but I can't kill someone with a railgun that hit them in the feet. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have only played through 10 of 15 missions so far but I am mystified by the reactions I am seeing here.
    SPOILER ALERT:
The story is both easy to follow and has depth and mystery for those who take the time to think about it. Master Chief has gone rogue because he is receiving mysterious transmissions from someone claiming to be Cortana. He investigates even though it means going AWOL. His loyal team of spartans support his decision with no proof at all--demonstrating their absolute loyalty to his cause. Spartan Lock and his blue team are sent to track them down and bring them in. Master Chief's efforts to find Cortana takes him on a trip across the galaxy to different planetary outposts and even into the middle of a covenant civil war with the elites (why no brutes?). The mysterious giant guardians, Cortana's true intentions, Locke's unquestioning obedience to orders, the return of the Arbiter--there's a ton of story here. It may not all have the nuance that we would want but it smacks of Halo and takes us places we have never been in the games before. The Elite homeworld is truly a sight to behold.
Point being, 343 Industries did let us down with Master Chief Collection and I haven't even really scratched the surface on Halo 5 multiplayer yet, but if you are on the fence, don't let these critics sway you against buying the game. The campaign so far has been compelling and a blast to play. Fits nice and easy into the Halo series while being a 2015 game in terms of graphics and gameplay.

I'm also not crazy about some of the Arena maps, and they have some spawning issues. I'm going to go in more detail in a bit.

The game, itself, looks amazing and has some of the best gameplay mechanics that you'll experience in any 1st person shooter. When in the campaign, everything looks so real. Some of the levels look absolutely gorgeous. The cutscenes will absolutely blow you away. I'm not finished with the campaign, so I can't comment on the total quality of the story; but half way through I find myself pushing through to find out what happens next.

About the issues I had with partner AI and why the campaign needs some rebalancing. You'll feel the re-balancing issue more so on Legendary difficulties. Partner AI rarely ever follow the orders given to them, and they take their merry time getting into position. They also don't have a way to give a command to a specific AI partner. This gets you killed quite often in Legendary mode. You can spend 5 minutes trying to get them to man turrets, or attempt to split the group in half so you can operate 2 warthogs. Sometimes all 3 will go to the same warthog, and sometimes one comes with you and only one will go to the directed warthog. You will feel this on the "Glass" mission, especially when trying to push through to get the skull on the map (it's the only skull that requires the mission be played on "Legendary" difficulty). The lack of coordination makes it even more difficult than it needs to be to try and beat harder difficulties. Moving on to balancing, Legendary difficulty is "stupid" hard. You could unload a couple clips into a regular enemy before they finally fall; not to mention that all enemies seem to aggro to the user character and tend to lay off AI controlled players. They also are ridiculously accurate, and deal a ton of damage. It's so bad, that in areas that require the use of a vehicle you're better off having AI work a turret. If you man the turret, you'll be dead within a few seconds of running into hostiles. You'll be lucky to kill anything. If using the machine gun turret, you have to lay down and hit for a a continuous 5 seconds to take out enemies right above the grunt level. Being they're lax in targeting AI partners, they'll focus on you as the driver and usually hit the vehicle which will shield while you whip around (AI drivers typically drive like they are trying to parallel park every 50 ft). Because of this, co-op may actually be harder on Legendary than single player in some parts. I actually had a Scorpion get blown up 100 ft from the garage I pulled it out of by a knight, a regular mob, and a couple slow shooting anti-vehicle turrets. The turrets and knight took multiple shells to knock out; when I finally got to a checkpoint, I was stuck in the scorpion and was continuously getting it blown up within 5 secs of checkpoint reloading. Barely enough time to abandon ship, and my partner operating the turret usually dies because they don't abandon the vehicle before it explodes. I was dying within a few seconds because they could are ridiculously accurate. If you're flying around and they have a 1/4" of room to hit you on the fly, you best believe they'll get you. There is hardly any type of cover, to make it remotely fair. It's beyond Dark Souls difficulty, and feels cheap at times. They either need to spread the aggro more evenly and make the partner AI as smart as enemy AI, or decrease enemy health/weapon dam/accuracy.

As for multiplayer, Warzone is awesome. However, there are spawning issues in Arena, and some in Warzone. You often spawn in and immediately get head shot before you can even move. Sometimes you spawn two feet from where you were killed so whomever killed you gets an easy double kill. They need to address that, because that will cause some people to rage quit. It felt like "Battlefront Beta Light" with the spawning. I also am not crazy about some of the maps in Arena, some just look like modern art and are ugly as sin. They're easy to get lost in or turned around in, and with that ugly architecture in some levels it just makes your head hurt. Most of these issues can get fixed in updates, so I'm not going to destroy this game over some pet peeves. If you loved Halo before, you'll love this one. It is improved upon; but it does require some fine tuning.

Halos multiplayer hasnt change very much so if you're into that type of game play then you're good. If you wanted another epic story or even a mediocre story then this does not deliver. If youre new to the franchise this may appeal to you. If you're a die hard halo fan who has read the books and also knows a lot about marathon youre going to be let down.

Listen Im not trying to bash on a series i love ok. But I didn't feel any excitement playing this game. Maybe its because im 30 and lack the amount of testosterone i had 10 years ago. But i still play racing games and i still get an insane rush when im winning. The spark is still there not the guilty one. From the first cut scene with Spartans falling from the sky to masterchiefs intro i felt really ashamed and embarrassed. Only because Ive read the books and my image of what Spartans are does not compare to these. Of course the books are going to be different since theyre written by different writers.

That lack of continuity in halo can cause a lot of confusion for me. also it causes me to actually hate the new since it breaks so many lines. Im just gonna make a list W/E.
1.Story is boring and lacks continuity 2. Missing spartan threes. No Spartans from the ghost of onyx series. Fyi these Spartans were with linda kelly and fred after halo 3 events. 3. Spartans falling from sky would kill them or injure them. 26 Spartans jumped from a pelican in reach. It wasnt pretty. 4. Halo 1-3 hinted that humans were the forerunners. Now they have removed that and made these forerunner enemies. I just dont get it why would the forerunners only call humans re-claimers. they didnt make the tech the forerunners did right? seriously wtf halo Four. 5. Same boring multiplayer 6. cant join random people for coop campaign only friends...seriously.

Halo, if you ever read this, know that I loved you.

I loved Frank O'Connor and his work at Official Xbox Magazine while you were still a baby. He was so funny. He was larger than life and a really cool dude. The best day of the month was the day a magazine arrived on the doorstep of our home in the woods of Alabama. Even a quarter page snippet about what was coming in Halo 2 would have me excited for weeks. Each new gun they announced had me dreaming. I cut out screenshots of Elites and Master Chief and taped them inside my high school locker. I didn't care that they had been super enlarged beyond their native resolution so they could cover a magazine page, and now they looked all pixely. I didn't even know what resolution was back then.

I loved your forefather, Bungie, and his beautiful works of art. I still remember the day that I played Halo for the very first time. I went over to my Aunt's house, and my cousin showed me his new Xbox. He started a new Halo co-op campaign, and we played for hours. Halo was the sole reason I ended my near 10 year gaming relationship with Nintendo and bought an Xbox instead of a Gamecube. We started a weekly LAN party at my house, and we played Halo splitscreen multiplayer every Thursday night. I still remember Tower of Power on Ascension. We had custom names for all our custom game modes. We made SWAT before SWAT was a thing. We called it Realistic. My dad loved the Scorpion tanks on Blood Gulch. He couldn't run and look around as fast as my brother and I, but if he got in a tank, he was happy. Mom would even play sometimes too. Her name was "EvilMomlady", lovingly given in honor of Calvin and Hobbes' Mom.

Back when I was a cool kid creating all my usernames on the Internets, I chose usernames that declared my love and dedication to halo. Its kinda embarrassing now, and I've tried to change most of them to be more "professional". Earlier this year, a software client wanted to use Skype for a group meeting. When we had setup the chat room, apparently my old Skype handle came through instead of my current Microsoft account name, and the client asked, who is "dude4halo"? I had to sheepishly own that one.

I bought every single Halo soundtrack that Marty O'Donnell made. They were incredible. They showed me how awesome orchestral and classical music can be. Another cousin and I would listen to them every time we rode in his car. He built a subwoofer in his trunk, and when we listened to Covenant Dance we almost peed our pants. The music was peaceful and beautiful, stirring and exciting.

I read every Halo book for a long time. They were my favorite science fiction for years. Eric Nylund's storytelling was amazing.

Starting with Halo 2, we began a tradition of picking up each new Halo game at midnight as soon as it was released. Our goal was to get as many people together as we could to huddle around and play the co-op on Legendary. We tried to beat the game before sunrise. We've continued the tradition to this day.
But now, I'm afraid that this good thing must come to an end. It appears that so many things are changing. The split-screen, the music, the main character, the big team battles loaded with vehicles, the forge... So many of the things I loved about Halo are now just... dust and echoes. There is certainly a chance for a reclaimer, but now, I feel that I must look elsewhere. Farewell Halo. I hope we meet again someday. Maybe we can relive the glorious times of our past.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game was honestly beautiful and had great game play mechanics but is undersold by being over hyped. The game has nothing to do with the trailers so if you are buying based on that then don't buy it. The game has no boss battle and ends with a cliff hanger that makes the game feel like it's been cut short.... The multiplayer is okay but is ruined by a lack of game modes for it. Overall the game doesn't live up to what i thought it was... don't buy this game unless you actually need it.... Expand

So far I am not at all happy with this release.

1 had to reinstall 3 times to get the damn thing to correctly install 2 NO split screen, it should have been an option, and at the very least they could have added support for offline co op split screen 3 micro transactions. 4 boring campaign that lacks any choice motivation and comes across as being led around by the nose.

4 boring campaign that lacks any choice motivation and comes across as being led around by the nose. Players have no input other than following along a predetermined path , predetermined actions and events. one might as well sit back and just watch the AIs play the game. As a gamer of over 30 years I can tell you the best days of FPS have long since past. These days it is pay to win, pay to advance, pay for a hat. Where once FPS required thought and planning, now it is run and gun drop and pop you back. No costs for death, No thought required..

The best part of Halo was sitting down with my peers and playing together. By removing split screens, 343 has hollowed out the game. No more can my friends arrive at a house settle in for the day and leave when our fingers are worn and our heads are aching.
No longer can I enjoy running missions with my son, instead he has to watch me play or I watch him. we had so looked forward to running Halo 5 together, he is old enough to no longer need to be carried and we had planned to put the game on hard and battle our way through together.

All of that has been cut to cater to the whims of online multiplayer, 343i has disgarded the very people who supported Halo through thick and thin. We were patient when 343i dropped the ball ref MCC. We forgave them and looked forward instead of placing blame.

yet 343 has abandoned the split screen crowd , not even provided a campaign split screen .

this is likely the last 343i game I buy. The game designers have decided to focus on twitch players in the 10-30 group and is completely ignoring the players who helped Microsoft Bungie 343i build the brand of XBOX and HALO.

thanks guys way to be loyal to those who were loyal.

    5 online only.

7 super fast re-spawns means no real death penalty. Resulting in sloppy play styles and suicide runs....

it really is a shame the way these large release high profile games are all adding RNG , PTW. Halo COD Destiny all feel like games designed around Tryhard kids and are deliberately designed to get players addicted to the RNG...

If I feel different a few days from now I will change the score , but for now I am not at all happy how 343i is just following the pack instead of leading the way.

It brings nothing new to the table to the 1st person shooter genre

This game is Halo 4, watered down with slightly better visuals. Short and forgettable campaign. No split-screen. The mechanics just feel all wrong. Looks like the magic departed with Bungie.

My friend played the Halo 5 beta and him along with everybody who played the beta said that everything was basically perfect. From the beta until release 343 has taken it upon themselves to screw up the auto-aiming and aim acceleration, the graphics (which look horrible), and the maps (which are all basically bad and unmemorable). I couldn't believe when some of the maps loaded and the lines were jagged and the textures look unrendered. The Spartan armors are not shiny or aesthetic at all and look matte, the textures of each character look Xbox 360 era. Although there is a good variety of maps, each is divided into its own playlist so really you will be playing the same 3-4 maps over and over again. And let us not forget wonderful new micro-transactions!

Forge: Nonexistent so the 343 can release its own DLC maps to preserve the longevity of the game rather than letting the community creating its own maps.

Storyline: Campaign is incredibly short and dull. Played it solo normal in 5-6 hours and have no desire to play it again. The ads and opening cinematic are more epic than the entire campaign. If you haven't read the books or looked at any of the lore, Master Chief's Blue Team is unfamiliar and the player doesn't really seem to care about the members except for Chief. Locke and his team is boring so all the protagonists seem to be uninteresting. Also you ending up fighting the same boss throughout the game about 6 times. Literally any other Halo had a much more compelling story compared to this.

Menu: Looks horrible and hard to navigate. Halo has always excelled with party systems and pre-game lobbies, this game throws it out the window and makes these two components horrible to look at. There is a separate screen to see who is in your party and when you back out of a multiplayer playlist it kicks you back to the main menu. Sometimes you and your friends' Spartans won't load when you are viewing them when you want toview or customize.

Hopefully through updates and DLC this will be a decent Halo game but as of right now, at launch, it is one of the worst. On a brighter note, Warzone and Warzone Assault are two very fun gametypes.

A revolutionary Halo game that takes the game play forward, graphics next gen and a stella story that the fans have been begging for. Master Chief is back and more powerful then ever. Multiplayer runs smooth, connection is fast and the maps for the most part and intriguing. The Holiday title of the year is here.

To make it brief, Halo 5 has perhaps the weakest story/campaign in the mainline series (that being Halo: CE, 2, 3 and 4), as well as being a very short ride (in my experience). The multiplayer, however, is perhaps the best Halo multiplayer in quite some time with Warzone.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Halo 5 is not a good game. It's not terrible and doesn't deserve a score of zero but it certainly isn't worth 9 or 10.
Yes it looks reasonably pretty and it runs at 60 fps. Personally the 60fps bit is nonsense to my mind. I would rather play an 8-bit game that looks awful but is fun to play than this, which simply isn't enjoyable. After the 3rd hour it actually became a chore and that has never happened in any other Halo game.

The campaign story was basically written by taking the script for I, Robot and changing the names of the characters. The plot is exactly the same, AI protects people by removing their freedoms. A tired and well trodden trope of Sci-fi story telling.

The new spartans (apart from Buck) are a dull and uninteresting lot and the scripting for them is woeful.
For example, the blue team call 117 "chief", this is very confusing since he calls all of them by their names, including Fred-104 who is apparently a lieutenant and should by rights be called Sir. This is simply ludicrous when you consider that they were all tortured together since they were 6. I doubt ranks mean much to them when they are alone and yet not one of them ever calls him John.

The uproar after Halo 2 where Bungie were berated for forcing you to play half the game as the arbiter has apparently been forgotten within Redmond. In this game you play 3/4 of it as some dull random bloke who has all the charisma of a dose of clap.

However that is saved by the fact the actual play time of the game is 4-5 hours with 1.5 hours removed for cut scenes. It means that the pain of playing this game is lessened because it is insultingly short.
It took the same amount of time to install the game and the 9Gb update as it did to complete.
After Halo 4 I recall some random 343 mouth saying they wanted 5 to provide a longer campaign experience after the feedback they received about 4 being short. They obviously forgot that too in the quest for cash. This is shorter than 4.
The reclaimer trilogy is no longer a trilogy apparently so 6 will obviously be the second half of this game story spun off to make more money.

Which brings me on to this. I don't do mutli-player at all but the cynic in me does not believe the removal of split screen is due to the 60fps nonsense touted around in interviews. The introduction of the squad based model and removal of split screen smells like an underhanded way to increase xbox live sign ups for 4 player campaigns.
The only thing 343 care about now is multi-player because xbox live sign ups are where the money is. The campaign is now a side line that they have to throw together to keep the people who play it happy. The story line, script and production values of the single player campaign reflect that lack of interest by 343.

Essentially what they have done here is taken the point of Halo, thrown it out and made a short, unimaginative, dreary CoD squad shooter clone.
If I wanted to play a boring squad shooter I would play CoD, and cut out the middle man.

The only reason I'm not angry about this game being a complete let down is because it came free with the xbone I bought to play Fallout 4 next week. If I had actually spent my money on it I would be livid about how disappointing it was.

This is not Halo and is not deserving of the title. I feel embarrassed for the people who worked on this that actually care about Halo and the universe around it. The executive decisions that led to this pathetic excuse for a game being released has done them and all the gamers that love Halo a disservice.
343, get your heads out of your collective holes and face the fact that this is a sub-par campaign and no matter how many 9/10 reviews you buy in the game "press" it will not change the fact that gamers can tell good from bad.
Halo 6 had better be a good, long stunner of a campaign because you have a LOT of ground to make up if you hope there is chance anyone will care about, or buy, 7.

The campaign is lackluster and ending is terrible. Game with this budget should have hired a better writer.

This doesn't effect Arena mode, but it ruins Warzone by turning it into a pay to win scheme, as nothing is stopping people who choose to fork over cash from spamming the most powerful weapons and vehicles. The squad is absolutely useless. It would probably be easier for me to fight things on my own, had enemies not known where I was despite being behind walls. It's basically impossible to flank a hunter now. Speaking of flanking, every difficult enemy in the game has to be shot in the back and the squad does little to aid this. Why are you running around with your pistol out when you have a bigger gun on your back??
Yes, the game is gorgeous, but much of the environments were pretty repetitive. And you can't even retrace your steps! There was a warning to go back to the battlefield if I went too far.
I grew up on Halo and love playing with my friend in coop, but this series has just morphed into the inevitable pandering to the multiplayer experience of people who play CoD and Battlefield. I get it, Halo 2 redefined multiplayer online and everyone fell into step. But this game also redefined first person stories on the console. Gone are your companions Cortana and Gunny with wit to add to the dialogue, and now we're left with one dimensional squad characters who are more useless than the marines you fought with against the Flood. I fear I have to turn to RPGs in order to get an actual single player story these days.
The sick part about this is they left the story wide open for a sequel. Let's reinvent multiplayer again in a new game and go through the same bugs. I would take the scourge of story-DLC over having to pay $60 for another half thought out campaign.

I think people defending this game's problems and giving it 10 out of 10 scores are doing so in light of the xbox vs ps4 debate and not because of the game itself. Plain and simple; Halo 5 is a great game on the whole with a disappointing story and the same great multiplayer we have come to expect from the franchise. It does not have the same addictive "it" factor that halo 2, 3 and even reach had, but it is still one of the best on the market atm.

Graphics are okay, quite a bit of low texture resolution that becomes noticeable on my 60 inch flat screen. But I much prefer the consistent 60 fps compromise. Sound design and music are fantastic. The gameplay is top notch as usual but is more akin to halo 4 than the original trilogy for better or worse.

The sad truth though is that halo is no longer the perennial shooter of our generation now that bungie has passed the torch. Story DOES matter in a halo game. It might have never been the best or deepest, but it was always gripping and made the player feel like a real super soldier and the only one capable of saving the galaxy and human race from overwhelming odds against the covenant, flood and halo rings. The direction of this new trilogy and galactic threat just does not grip me the same way.

Once upon a time a new halo game meant a slam dunk 9.3-9.8 and a new king to crown on the fps market. Frankly an 8.5 on metacritic is a slap to the face of the original trilogy and 343 needs to step it up for halo 6. I am a huge fan and I don't mean to sound overly critical as I enjoy the game enough to keep playing but I also know how much better this franchise can be.

And the stupid said "We repeat the Warden 5x Eternal" and how is not enough, let's close the game with his presence again. The game became boring, annoying repetitive with this opponent.
2 - Whose idea was it to by Cortana against humans? It will be ridiculous if you evoke the Mendicant Bias or Flood to justify the support of cortana human again.
3 - Cade chief? Where you stuck the Chief? Not evoke the Halo Reach to explain that Halo survive without the Chief because that work was exceptional to explain the gaps, with a colossal story to be explored, you decided to opt for a story where the Chief is not the protagonist, Chief was turned into a mere representative of his own existence, and not the face itself.
4 Again, where is the Chief?
5 - Please kill the Spartan Lock character in some comic book launched between any before the release of Halo 6, or cause him to die in some Roard Star, send it to look for a Criptum any forgotten. Nothing against the actor, all against Spartan Lock.
6 - I have to say, the musical work is flawless, perfect.

Xbox, or Microsoft I should say further proves that they could care less about the recreational gamer. In their eyes, it's buy a console or GTFO. This in turn creates a more anti social society in which we can't even go to our friends house and play a damn game. So for story mode, HALO 5 gets a big fat goose egg zero out of 10. The multiplayer is okay but it feels chunky and slow and the aiming system is now call of duty so what's the point of having 2 different games?? Just merge the damn things at this point. There is replay value though so multiplayer gets 5 out of 10. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm just gonna say it Halo 5 sucks, and these are the reasons why it is such a waste of digital space.

Halo 5: Guardians campaign is a confusing disarray of levels, characters, and story plots that don't add up. Halo 5, which takes equal parts of the Halo novels, lame live-action mini-series, and characters, by Halo standards, don't really have an impact or you would care for. The story centers around Spartan Jameson Locke, of which he is the main character of the live action series Halo: Nightfall, and Fireteam Osiris, which is composed of Spartans Holly Tanaka, Olympia Vale, and Edward Buck, which you might recognize from previous Halo games Halo 3: ODST and Halo: Reach. The premise of the story is to track down the location of the Master Chief, after Master Chief receives a vision that Cortana is still alive and on a distant planet called Meridan. After Master Chief arrives on Meridan with his team of Spartans called Blue Team, Spartan Locke shortly arrives and tracks them down, and after a heated argument about what both of their objectives entail, they engage in a fisticuff, and Master Chief escapes. After this, the game continues to get really confusing for most intents and purposes, as Locke, has to fight an Elite civil war upon their home planet, Sanghelios, and Master Chief learns that Cortana is alive and has essentially become the forerunner equivalent to Gravemind, the Flood hive mind from previous games. But if you think that's the worst, here are more plot points that they left out entirely, as well as keen observations.
!. Halo 5, like Halo 4, does not take place around or even remotely close to a Halo ring.
    2. The Flood, again like 4, do not make an appearance.
    3. In the Campaign, they say that Master Chief isn't the last Spartan 2 anymore.
    4. There are 12 levels with Spartan Locke, and only 3 levels with Master Chief. I thought Master Chief was the star of the show...
    5. Spartan Locke looks way too close to ODST character Romeo
    6. Holly Tanaka does not look remotely close to a Japanese person.
    7. Your A.I. buddies, are almost dumber than marines in previous Halo games.
    8. Vehicles, which is one of the reasons Halo is enjoyable, get so shafted.
    9. You get nothing for beating the game, no armor, no option to play as the other characters, absolutely nothing.
    10. And this might be the last point, they're 2/3 levels dedicated to storytelling.
And the sad thing about this story is that, it vaguely reminds of Metal Gear Solid: Peacewalker, because the fact that Snake believes that the Boss is still alive, is almost word for word the same as Master Chief looking for Cortana. Halo doesn't need convoluted plot twists and turns, it just needs good game play, great voice acting, and copious amounts of vehicles. The only good thing I can say about the game is, well, which they kinda stole this from Star Wars: Republic Commando, but if you're playing solo, you can assign your A.I. buddies to attack certain targets, pick up weapons, and drive vehicles.

So far, you just heard me jaw about the hideous campaign, but surely since this is Halo, you'd expect a decent online multi-player right?

    Wrong.

Halo multiplayer is divided into two playlists, Arena and Warzone. Arena has the core game types you'd expect like Slayer and Free-for-Fall, but oddly, no Oddball, or Team Objectives like neutral bomb. and Warzone, which combines equal parts disappointment, Territories, and Invasion from Halo:Reach. Warzone also has the privilege of being the worst Halo mode ever invented beside modes made just for the Action Sack playlist. How the game works is capture territories, and continually move on to the next one, like Invasion. There is also A. I. on the map to kill for points, but that's more of a problem than an innovative feature, because matches are lost and won killing those things instead of capturing said territories. After capturing all territories on the map, you have to destroy the other team's power core, which boil down to my next point that the power core is impossible to reach and you're gonna die multiple times trying to reach it, because the maps are designed so poorly that all objectives/territories are only accessible by a bottleneck corridor, and that people abuse the requisition system, which gives people vehicles, power weapons, and power-ups like active camo. And that's not even the end of all of the gripes I have for game, which I'm almost surprised I forgot this, the game handles like crap, remakes of maps are really bad like Headlong, and Midship, and the fact that the SMG which has been absent since Halo:Reach overpowers the Assault Rifle and horribly imbalances gameplay, is astonishing. From reading this review, you might think this guy is an **** and doesn't know what's he talking about. No, the game is that bad, like I'd rather play Halo Spartan Assault, or Halo Wars, instead of this heap of garbage. I fear for Halo 6.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A truly disappointing game fashioned by 343 Industries who have officially sold out and lost their connection to their player base and their grasp of the Halo mythos and what made it so successful. Case in point: No split screen co-op, the brazen implementation of micro-transactions, and most of all a convoluted train wreck of a plot that tarnishes the unique story telling of the previous entries.

For all its criticisms, I enjoyed Halo 4 and held a great deal of faith in 343 in crafting the next installment of the Halo saga. While the multiplayer is commendable, the writing and mechanics of the game-play are not. Squad based combat is underdeveloped, the AI is incompetent and the campaign can only truly be enjoyed cooperatively online. This is a hindrance to many fans who are drawn to Halo's storytelling instead of its multiplayer. I also can't help but feel as if this is some ploy in order to sell more Xbox Live gold memberships.

The game borrows too much from the side material, and meekly introduces so much in its short campaign that it accomplishes very little. The campaign in its entirety feels like it was just setup for Halo 6.

Look at everything 343 discarded for "higher frame rates", because the graphics certainly don't reach 1080p. Forge, split screen co-op, a satisfying campaign, popular MP game types from previous halo entries. And in return the only worthwhile addition we get is Warzone. Oh, and they put guns on the mongoose.

Locke is a bland protagonist, and instead of Master Chief coming to terms with his humanity as we were led to believe at the end of Halo 4, nothing is explored, he just keeps on being the archetypical silent hero. As for that meaningful death, you know, Cortana's, well you can forget that too because an hour into the game we find out she's alive. No build up, no mystery or anything leading up to this revelation. And apparently everyone else knew this before Chief did. Every other spartan besides Buck has no personality or charm. Cortana and Halsey suddenly have these radical changes in character. Cortana wants to be the tyrannical overlord of the universe and Halsey finally expresses concern for her "children" soldiers. Its not like they've been embroiled in decades of perilous warfare in space all this time. And where's the Didact? The Librarian? The former died in the comics and the latter is on vacation.

    Final Thoughts:

Jun should've been on fire team Osiris.

Any single member of Blue Team could've probably wiped out fire team Osiris by themselves.

No climactic battle between Chief and Locke like in the trailers.

Cliffhanger ending to a deeply mediocre story.

    Why isn't dual wielding back?

    Why is Cortana wearing clothes?

Hey, what's the domain and the mantle of responsibility? I shouldn't have to read the books to know what's going on in the story. Guardians should've been able to stand on its own.

Don't allow yourself to be entranced by the pretty visuals and production quality. This entire game is style over substance. 343 was either too ambitious, or simply became to preoccupied with profits to make an enjoyable Halo title. I dare say the story has now become unsalvagable. In Halo 6 bring back split screen, the flood, the brute chieftains who charge you with gravity hammers, get creative and find ways to develop all of these characters, reintroduce dual wielding, maybe reunite the Chief with the Arbiter (long shot?), and get rid of the filthy micro-transactions and then I might consider checking it out.

To everyone showering the game with praise and generous, undeserved scores you are pretty much telling 343 that its okay to churn out mediocre content. Objectively, this game is bad in many aspects. And seriously, if you collect all the skulls and mission intel you get ...nothing. Remember in Halo 3 when you got the vaunted Hayabusa armor for finding all the skulls and you could tell how good a player was by how cool looking and rare their armor was? When gaming was more of a meritocracy where skill was more important than deep pockets. Yeah, I miss those days too. Por que 343? Por Que?

Oh, and remember that OP suit of power armor from Halo Legends? Do something with that.

For a good squad based shooter with a more compelling story look to the retro title Star Wars: Republic Commando. Take notes 343.

Quite the opposite. 343 gave us a pain free launch. I’ve seen a lot of talk that Destiny is the best shooter out right now, but it has devolved into a blatant cash grab. And the multiplayer is a laggy mess. No thanks. COD is stale, and it’s arcady, campy gameplay appeals to the bottom denominator. For gamers sick of the COD, Destiny, and Battlefield bandwagon, Halo 5 is a solid alternative.

There’s a caveat. People not versed in Halo lore will be lost playing the campaign. But I didn’t buy Halo 5 to play the campaign because it’s overrated. I purchased H5 for the multiplayer.

Will Halo fans like the campaign? Maybe. Reactions will be mixed for sure. Halo fans have been completely inconsolable since 343 took over the franchise. So I’m sure many fans will launch into “worse Halo ever” rants. The campaign is OK, but it verges on uninspiring. With the exception of franchises like Fallout, Bioshock, and Half-Life, shooters are poor mediums to tell stories. If I rated H5 on just story, my final score would be much lower. That said, it’s still better than the trash Activision throws at us.

The campaign features co-op, so friends can enjoy it together. Be warned Halo fanboys(and girls), there is no split screen. 343 announced that Halo 5 would not feature it months before launch. So this isn’t news. I’m surprised how many gamers purchased H5 not knowing this. The lack of split screen isn’t a deal breaker since a proportionally small number of people use it.

H5’s graphics are unimpressive. It suffers from screen tearing and aliasing. Shadows are jagged. Textures are low quality. Pop in’s plague environs. Visually, H5 isn’t an improvement over Halo 4 except for one big difference: Halo 5 hits 60 frames per second. All 360 versions of Halo were 30fps. Competitive games perform better at higher frames, and 343 desperately wants Halo to reemerge as the de facto gold standard for competitive console gaming. There’s no doubt that visual sacrifices were necessary to maintain that level of performance. Still, Halo 5 doesn’t look all that great. The “dynamic” adjustments 343 talks about come with big sacrifices in graphic fidelity that are evident to anyone who plays it. The lack of split screen is another sacrifice.

Despite the above, H5 runs silky smooth. From a performance perspective, H5 is the best multiplayer experience on nextgen. Hit detection is accurate and consistent. Framerates hold steady, even in larger game modes. The move to full-time dedicated servers was the right choice, and ALL developers should be making that move. But servers are only as good as the netcode, and H5 delivers there too. In comparison to all the other major fps titles on nextgen, none rival H5 in performance or hit detection.

How about multiplayer? Well, it’s good. Darn good. For players wanting a casual shooter, don’t play here. H5 is brutal and the skill gap is much wider than COD. The gripes I’ve read about gun balance, spawns, etc. are over exaggerated. Those players want to complain because they couldn’t score 30 kills a game on day one. So they blame the game, not their lack of skill and patience.

H5’s multiplayer is divided into 2 modes: Arena and Warzone. Arena is reminiscent of older Halo’s. All play is ranked play. All players start with the same weapons and abilities. Power weapons spawn at set points on the map. Controlling these points can turn the tide of every match. There’s no voting. Penalties are imposed for quitting early among other things.

Breakout is the best game mode. It combines some round-based, tactical play with player elimination. So if a player dies in a round, he can’t respawn until the next round. Old school gamers will like this mode because it relies on precision, tactics, and teamwork. COD run and gun tryhards will hate it. In fact, the ones I’ve talked to do. That’s OK, Halo 5 is for the adults.

The much hyped Warzone is OK, but AI enemies are sparse and nothing more than bullet sponges. Titanfall is still king of this style game mode. I prefer Warzone Assault which dumps the enemy AI, so it’s more like Big Team Slayer.

The REQ system allows players to purchase/earn powerups for the Warzone mode only. Perks are easy enough to earn without spending real money. Perks can’t be used in Arena.

Of course the biggest perk is free DLC!! A grossly underrated novelty by Halo fans. Since launch, 343 has already released new maps and game mode.

My verdict on H5? It’s the best game multiplayer game on Xbox One because it focuses on things that matter: Connectivity, performance, and balance. Butthurt Halo fans need to shut up. H5 may not be the prettiest car on the strip, but its mp performance is second to none. 343 showed us it’s willing to learn and delivered the most balanced, competitive multiplayer on consoles I’ve seen in years

Halo 5 marks the first instalment of the popular franchise on the xbox one. The series which has captivated players with its continuing story and its competitive multiplayer doesn't stop short this time, but it may not be so great for all player styles.

The story tells a new, different story but with the same game play, many of our favorite past enemies, and a few new ones. Game play on single player has the player controlling a single character with a back up team of 3, allowing for simple seamless exchange into the multiplayer campaign where you can team up with up to 3 buddies for a 4 way co-op play. Without ruining the story, some serious Halo fans may be unhappy with the way it plays out. But never the less, the story is great, fun, and has all you would normally expect from a Halo game.

The online multiplayer, one of the more popular modes among most players, and the main selling point of the series features our standard modes along with a few new ones. The lobby menus are bland, lacking even in design and information. The rotation of maps is random, and can make for the same map being played twice, three even four times in a row. The maps them self, although nice in design, feel small and cluttered, allowing for easy spawn killing, and overtaking of an opposing team, specially in the SWAT game mode. Some of the weapons seem mildly over powered. Some games you will notice most players running around wielding their secondary weapon over the assault riffle, and even some power weapons. But in the end, as usual, your success will come down to how familiar you are with the area, your ability to move, and how accurate you are with whatever gun you use.

Add those 2 features in, with the expected forge mode, spartan customization, game customization, req packs and theatre, and this game should satisfy any Halo fan.

With Halo 5, I decided to give halo another opportunity. The game is very well built, it's extremely smooth and there's no lag in multiplayer modes. Warzone maps are huge and beautiful.

However, it's still not my type of game. There's something about the aiming system that makes me miss Titanfall (zooming has no apparent effect), takes too much time to recover the shields when you survive a shootout (and there's no place to hide), Arena maps are too small and uninteresting.

Contrary to many reviews I read online, the story is ok but the campaign mode is repetitive, always against the same type of enemies, in similar scenarios.

So, why a 8 ? Because if I ignore my personal preferences and biases, I have to acknowledge that Halo 5 is a great shooter, extremely smooth. Warzone is hugely entertaining if you adapt to the aiming system and enjoy an on-line experience without any strategy or stealth options.

In terms of plot it's one of the weakest in Halo history. Narrative is disjointed, main characters don't have any serious exposition and this whole "greatest hunt" scenario is flat and without any tension.

However, shooting it's still fun (especially in co-op mode), Promethean weaponry is awesome and multiplayer will keep Your for hours (warzone is great new addition). Just don't keep your story expectations too high this time.

Great game. Definitely a departure from the standard halo formula for single player. A squad based shooter makes more sense with the overall Halo lore but it doesn't fit with all the other core games to this point so I think it will upset a good deal of fanboys.

Overall the campaign felt short, but I believe that a lot of this was dude to the squad revive system keeping you from having to reload checkpoints often. Story didn't end on a cliffhanger like halo 2 but definitely didn't finish the plot arc, but that is to be expected in a trilogy.
    Graphics, great.
    Sound, amazing.
    Gameplay, fairly good.
    Story, good.

But the multiplayer is where Halo 5 really shines. After playing the Beta I expected a COD clone with halo skins but they really made some changes. No loadouts in arena play. More weapons on the field. The sprint melee is a great addition along with the clambering and boost. Lots of options give huge amounts of depth to multiplayer play and allow for many different play styles.

The biggest downsides for me are, No firefight, sub par graphics on the multiplayer maps and the lack of maps though the current maps are fun to play.

On the bright side, the soundtrack is brilliant, as you'd expect from any Halo game.
There were parts of the campaign that were great, but overall, I would give it a 7/10.
Multiplayer: This is what saves the game. In Arena, the game is very competitive and mobile, which makes it very intense in every match. My only complaint is the lack of BR/DMR starts, but the Magnum is very effective and like the previous games, there are plenty of BR/DMR spawns on very quick spawn timers, which keeps me content. Another great thing about this MP is that nearly every weapon is actually effective. The new armor abilities also change up the combat in a very interesting way. The gametypes include classics like Slayer (deathmatch) and capture the flag) while also including new gametypes like breakout and strongholds. The multiplayer also includes Warzone, a 12v12 multiplayer gametype that features AI enemies and bosses.

343 totally missed the boat on this game. A compelling and intriguing story has always been a cornerstone for Halo games but, this is severely lacking in said department. Add unimpressive textures to the mix, poor resolution and the lack of split screen (why?!) and here you have the, possibly, the worst halo in the franchise.

It's literally a money grab and they have turned on their loyal customers. I will no longer be supporting xbox. I've switched to PC. If I'm going to give money to Microsoft I'll at least support the products that should stay on the market.

This game is an incomplete mess. At launch this game is missing a ton of gametypes as well as missing split screen, lan, and forge mode. The graphics are sub-par with flickering shadows, a resolution that is constantly wavering between 720p and 1080p, and a framerate that is only locked at 60fps when you are in close range, enemies that are mid to long range will stutter around at 30fps

The single player campaign is an awful nonsensical story that's completely forgettable. That's all that could be said about that portion but it's so much worse: Boring AI squadmates and shifting perspectives to uninteresting personalities are really what kill it. Halo 2 did this well and made it work because the Arbiter was an interesting character. The sangheli were an interesting race. And the Covenant is an interesting faction. Locke offers absolutely NONE of that so why force him down our throats? Start a spin off with Locke if you want to tell his story so bad. People play the SP campaign of Halo to play as Master Chief and have him interact with crazy alien objects in exotic locales. Unfortunately that's only a small portion of the campaign here.

The multiplayer has several exploits that make it frustrating. Some items and weapons are way overpowered. Requisition/lootboxes add a pay to win aspect that just makes it no fun especially since they keep adding more and more common/uncommon items making it even harder to unlock the rarer ones. So people can just pay hand over fist and keep unlocking overpowered weapons and items. Even the way the permanent unlocks work makes you suffer. I had to unlock like 100 different assault rifles and battle rifles that barely vary at all before I unlocked something I was excited to use. And the UI for scrolling through these items? AWFUL. There's 100 items but only five at a time fit on the screen. Are you kidding me? Christ.

Gears of Duty: Halo Edition 5 simply isn't a Halo game. I've just come off beating the Master Chief Collection, even grinding through 4 again. While some design elements saw improvements, namely the fore-runner guns which now feel appropriate to what they were supposed to be, almost everything else is significantly worse. Having also just finished Advanced Warfare, the similarities to the COD franchise and everywhere.

There was also one, particular thing, which stood out like a giant middle finger to the entire Halo community. As one Reddit user, amusso18 put it, "they [343] spent their time giving you the best parts of the game in UNPLAYABLE CUTSCENES". During the opening scene I thought, "Ok, maybe its a tease for what you get to do, I can let one slide". But when the second scene ran, showing your team killing a bunch of elites and then a boss elite - something EVERY other game let the player do countless times - I had enough.

If this were some COD nod to Halo that would be different, if it was an entirely different game or even an experimental game based in the Halo world like ODST, I may have been more sympathetic. 343 simply took all the things that made Halo what it was and killed them.

Some people say "Just go play CE forever then", but that's just it. Halo 1-3 all showed progress and innovation. Halo ODST and Reach did the same and took the series further than it had ever been, all while keeping the core of Halo in-tact.

Halo 4 was frustrating to play and marred by adjustments that made no sense. Where did chiefs headlamp go? Its the same suit at the end of 3, why do I have to suffer an insanely dark game because 343 didn't feel like mapping the up arrow to a flashlight? Really? Why do the guns almost all have reduced ammo counts? Why does chief feel like he is way more vulnerable than before; I haven't A-B'd it but I'm certain his shield is far weaker in 4. Why are grenades basically useless now? One of the funnest parts of 3 was sticking everything and getting good at it, in 4 its almost impossible. Why do banshee pilots fly like they can read the players mind, I've never seen such insane piloting, not even by human players. The whole thing just feels like its trying to punish the player. Also, I really didn't care for Cortana's drama. The COD influence of her barking orders the entire campaign, I suppose, were a glimpse into 5's direction.

Regarding multiplayer, why did they nerf the rail gun!? Why did they keep changing things on the whims of butt-hurt players? Its so frustrating to buy a game, like the game, and have it be completely different a few months in! I completely gave up Halo 4's multiplayer because they changed it at the core level so often. Halo 5, I hesitate to even try it.

The game is OK, but its not Halo. Don't call it Halo 343 if your going to make something completely different.

The story is too quick, and not gripping until the last missions, and it honestly felt rushed. Some missions are so short and if i remember correctly, there was even a mission where the player walked to a point, experienced a cut scene and that was it. Not to mention, only 2-3 missions involve blue team, and their 'close bonds' aren't necessarily seen at all. It seemed more like endless 'we believe in you Chief' type of stuff, like that 10 year old cousin who follows everything you do and say. It is enjoyable, but some missions do feel repetitive. It does tutor you with the new moves and having other team mates around you can be helpful and a bit of fun. The look, feel and framerate are as good as any other AAA titles to this day, if not better. Everything looks stunning and soundtracks are nods to older titles.

The multiplayer is COMPLETE PERFECTION. It is smooth, the game modes are good but lacking and this is where 343i clearly put their effort in. Not to mention free DLC will be added for a long period past launch. The requisition system is satisfying, however often feels like it is done just to make money as they can be purchased with real money, not in game currency. However, all money made is being added to the 1 million dollar prize pool for the Halo Championships in early 2016. Warzone is fun and the new mode called breakout is a sick mode that keeps my heart racing.

The interface of the whole game is great, it is easy to find what you are looking for and takes only 5 minutes to have it down-packed. Overall, it is definitely worth buying. :)

No splitscreen is a massive drawback. Multiplayer having MICROTRANSACTIONS is taking the rating down a fair few notches - I already paid for your game, don't make me pay for it again. Halo 5: Guardians is okay. Its campaign is rubbish, but the multiplayer is solid thanks to the foundation it’s built upon. Warzone is a really enjoyable experience, and while combat is still mostly about tossing grenades and hitting the melee button, the whole Requisition gimmick adds some much-needed flavor to proceedings.

The latest Halo is a big deal only for hardcore Halo fans. For me the single player campaign was unbearably pompous and despite 1080p and 60 fps the visuals are not as breathtaking as they once were in Halo 4. The game builds a solid foundation for Halo 6, but it’s not one of those games you absolutely have to play. [13/2015, p.48]
